(00:00):
Oh, yes, it is,Yes, it is Hey, Rodney Pete
here and we have an one hourshow today abbreviated show. The Dodgers are
in Cleveland playing the Guardians this afternoon, so one hour to get at you
today. We got a lot toget to and Fred is gone fishing,
so we had to bring in thebig guns for this hour show. He

(00:23):
played ten years in the NBA,he went to UCLA and I know,
listen, you know, I've hadmy friction and had my flat with some
bruins, but this guy, wealways get along. He's one of the
good bruins, as we like tosay over the chachren Land. My man
Ryan Hollins is with me today.Ryan, what's going on? Okay,
what's going on? Brother? Howyou been Man? I've been good,

(00:45):
Man, I've been good. It'sbeen too long, it's been too long.
Before we get started, we gota lot to chop up. Man.
We only got an hour today, and I wish we had more because
there's a lot to talk about himand a lot of things I want to
get your take on. But beforewe start, Man, you spent the
summer playing in the Big Three. Is that correct? Yeah? Man had

(01:06):
a blast. Man had a blast. Tell me about it, man,
tell me about it. How didit go? And you play? What
was the name of the team, the the BiVO Whack, Yeah, BiVO
whack. Uh. It was theHtown squad man. Me and my guy
Joe Green. Corey Brewer played withhim. Garland Green, his brother was
on the squad. And you know, for me, Rodney, I mean,

(01:26):
as long as my arms and legswork, man, I get out
and have some fun. Man,it's one day in week. But shout
out to Ice cute man, he'sdoing an excellent job. And uh,
you know it's a fun event.Man. I keep hearing just nothing but
positive things. So you get achance, you gotta come check it out.
Rodney. Oh I've checked. I'vechecked him out, man. And
you know one things I will say, and you know this, Ryan,

(01:46):
as as athletes, you never leaveyou never lose that competitiveness, that that
that those juices that flow when you'rein competition. And I've been to a
few of the games and and youknow it's time. Maybe ass and from
a fan standpoint that it might be, Oh they're just out there gooping around
and having fun. But when thatball is tipped, man, you guys

(02:07):
are getting into it, you're gettingafter it, you're playing hard, and
it's in it's competition. Man,did you find yourself once once to actually
started to go? Man, didyour juices start flowing? You feel like,
Man, I'm I'm in this now, let's go. You know what's
funny, It's it's almost like football, Rodney, where you're not as a
hooper, think about this. We'renot used to this. And when I

(02:28):
say used to this, when youwin or lose, there's a whole week
where you got to think about whathappened. You know, if you missed
the shot, you know you missedthe rebound, the team one, or
you have a whole week to feelgood. But as hoopers, we're not
used to that. Man. SoI think the biggest adjustment is you are
just sitting there thinking about how youcan get better. So I'll say,

(02:50):
for me, because I'm not ina competitive season where some of the guys
are, it takes me a littlewhile to kind of get those juices going.
But I'll say by week two orthree, like I really don't like
anybody, I'm throwing elbows. Itry to keep the elbows down. We
wanted to Week two one week three, I thowt the elbows, man,
and we're just we're just playing, you know. But it's all in the
spirit of competition. But I loveit. Man. It's nothing like getting

(03:14):
out and competing, you know it, don't It don't take much and then
you're in it. Absolutely. AndGary Bayton was your head coach that would
understand. Yeah, I mean hehad his fired up from the locker of
man dps only give us, giveus more trash talk more. He challenged
us more than you know the otherteam sometimes, man. But you gotta
love him, man. And Ithink just seeing Hall of famers, Man,

(03:36):
I remember getting picked up from theairport one time and we're you know,
I'm trying to like find my ride, Like, all right, we'll
just throw you in this car.I'm like, you know, I'm kind
of a little bit of bad move. Whatever, you gotta throw me in
the car. The car's not readyat get in the car. Man.
It's doctor Jay Man in all bluecrispy Philadelphia seventy six and suit. And
then we start talking basketball. Man. I'm going, Man, I'm sitting

(03:59):
here talking to Jake Man. Sothe Big Three give you some of those
really cool moments of just that basketballfraternity. Yeah, that's so interesting that
you say that, because I feelthe same way. Man. When you
you you're you know, when youplayed a professional sport, something that you
dreamed about for a long time.Obviously when you were growing up, or

(04:19):
and I was growing up, youhad guys that you looked up to,
and guys are like, man,I want to be there one day.
I can't wait my opportunity. Iwant to be in that position one day.
And then when you have and yougrew up and you have chances to
interact with some of the greats ofthe game that that played before you.
Man, it's an incredible feeling.I always found myself just just wanted to

(04:43):
bring out a pen and pad andjust soak up everything that they had to
say, man, because it wasit was amazing. I remember playing in
a golf tournament in New York thoseyears ago. It's maybe it been my
third year in the league, andI got invited to playing a golf tournament
in New York. And you knowthe golf tournament, everybody comes out and
especially depends on what kind of isbut you you see a lot of you

(05:04):
know, former players, and Igot to play and a force him with
with Joe Naman. And when whenI tell you, because I had always
been a fan of Joe Naman,I mean on and off the field,
how if you could compare him toa hot quarterback of our decades? Oh,
man, Joe Joe Namath a combination. He was Joe Burrow, Joe

(05:32):
Burrow with the little with the littleuh Aaron Rodgers into him. And and
because he was, because he wasnot only you know, people didn't talk
about him just on the field, they talked about him off the field as
well because of where he his lifestyleand everybody wanted to be Joe. And
it was in New York where heplayed, and he embraced every bit of

(05:55):
being a quarterback. That's what Iloved about him. He wasn't shy by
talking about how good it was tobe a quarterback in the NFL. And
so to be there for three anda half hours chopping it up with him
and having him tell story after storyafter story. Man, I wish I
could have bottled that time and keptit forever because it was such an amazing
experience that you know, very fewpeople get to have, and for me

(06:18):
it was it was amazing. SoI hear you man with doctor Jason in
the back seat and you're talking todoctor j about his his time and the
things that he did. That's edhad to be amazing. It was just
hearing his love of the game andtalking about where the game is now and
you know the guys that he likesand just like him, just candidly talking.
And I'm I'm like pinching myself, like, man, we we sit

(06:39):
here with with with the Jay andand Rodney, you notice more than I
do. You know, I hadto find out like in his time,
doctor Jay. You know, wealways had these goat debates, Doctor and
Jay was the goat and he wasman. He was the he was the
greatest player that had played in histime. He had that that respect.

(07:00):
I don't think a lot of peopleknow that or in this generation understand.
He was the the lebron He wasthe Michael absolutely. And you talk about
you know, you talked to thoseguys, you know, you talked to
Magic and Michael and even Bird andback and those guys, they they talk
about guys that they were, youknow, looking forward to playing against and
playing with. Doctor Jay's name isalways at the top of the list,

(07:23):
and those guys are like man,I just I idolized doctor Jay. Doctor
Jay was the man and and alot of a lot of a lot of
people, especially nowadays, they don'tget a chance to really reflect or understand
how big doctor Jay was at thattime. Like you said, he was
Lebron, he was Kobe, hewas all those guys mixed and rolled into
one and everybody. Everybody wanted tobe doctor Jack. I got, I

(07:46):
got a fun fact for you.I got a one. When you can,
you can keep. So. Iplayed my early years in Charlotte with
Juwan Howard. Shout out Juwan, who's doing an excellent job coaching his son.
Just gots drafted. Orlando Man couldbe beat for him. I always
call him old Man. And hehas one tattoo. Juan Howed me people
and he has one tattoo. Igo, what are you doing one tattoo?

(08:09):
What's wrong with you? Man?He said. Growing up in Chicago,
you know they kind of cornering youdown and say, hey, man,
you you know you gotta get atattoo. You don't have a choice,
they say, he said, Man, I gotta get to it.
If I gotta get a tattooed,I get a tattoo like and then he
didn't want to do it, butit was a rough neighborhood. So he
gets this tattoo, and a tattoosays doctor Jay. Is that right,

(08:33):
Juwan Howard, that's a doctor Jaketattoo. I don't know if he was
naming it doctor Juwan, but itwas after Doctor Jay was the man.
So people from back, Juwan Howardhas a Doctor Jay tattoo at the young
as he were forced to get atattoo or he's gonna get beat up.
They're gonna take care of him.Man, what am I gonna What am
I gonna do? What am Igonna put on? You got a Doctor
Jay tattoo, Juwan Howard? Man, Hey, that just goes to show

(08:56):
you the respect that people have fordoctor Jay. Man, if you gonna
get something that permanent on your body, you're not gonna get mom. You're
not gonna get your initials or yourbirthday. He ended up getting Doctor Jay
on as a tattoo. Man,that that says nothing but but respect.
My man, Ryan hillands joining metoday for Fred. We only on for
an hour today, so we maybe going all over the place with these
topics, man, because trying toget everything in into an hour is gonna

(09:20):
be difficult, so we may bouncearound. David Bassett is going to join
us a little bit later as well, so we'll get into the Dodgers and
uh, you know, kind oftalk about their run through September, the
rest of this month through September, and how they're gonna look into the playoffs
and talk about some injuries with him. But I want to stay basketball with
you right now. Ryan just cameout James Harden got fined one hundred thousand

(09:41):
dollars by the NBA for publicly talkingabout trade. Now, there's a lot
of language in there why he gotfine, what he got fined for,
but he got fined one hundred thousanddollars. Just I didn't want to get
your take on on that situation specificallywith James. You know, we all
know that he he was really adamantabout getting out of Philly getting and wanted

(10:03):
to be traded to the Clippers. That kind of blew up and now he
got fine. First of all, what's your take on the fine by the
NBA for him calling publicly calling DarylMorey a liar? Or is it fine
because he public could talk about wantand be traded. They had to,
they had to find James. Ithink it was more conversation conduct detrimental to

(10:28):
the team. I think what hesaid is, hey, I won't It's
kind of like putting a stranglehold onthe organization, saying that, you know,
I won't play or be a partof this organization, which actually in
fact goes against the code of conductfor players. It's in the rule book
as long as Gerald Morey's there. So that's that's where the fine ended up
coming from you. Kind of You'reyou're demanding that. He's like kind of
fired. You know, you can't. You can't do that. Hey,

(10:50):
I ain't working at five I Rodneyplate is over there. Ain't working at
five seventy. No more publicly maybebehind the scenes, you know, Ridy
you I'm sure you got stories youcan, but in you can't do that.
So James of putting his foot down. It ain't for everybody. Ryan
Hylands could never publicly say anything aboutDarni or another player while he was playing.
Okay, so this ain't for everybody. This ain't like a role player

(11:13):
type deal. This isn't James Hardendeal knowing, uh, that is James
Harden. And ultimately, I wantto see James Harden playing basketball and I
don't. I'm not a pump andI know like a lot of people are
ready to slam James Hardened. Hedidn't do this, and he had this,
and he had that, you know, like the dude is a megastar,
you know. And I think onething people have to understand these these
players now, they understand their role, they understand who they are. I

(11:37):
think it comes at a tough timebecause James is at that in between stage
and that's where people are getting criticalof him. Where is he the same
six point James Harden can't always backit up with his game all the time.
Right, he hadn't gotten that ring, he hadn't gotten that championship.
But he's as certified as they come. So that's where the question mark,
you know, should you be doingthis to saying this? But James Harden

(11:58):
feels like the respect of being tradedon time was not there. So he
feels like he's certified enough to gogo and speak out. And ultimately,
at the end of the day,if James Harden, and if you heard
me, say this about last timewe talked Rinning about Ben Simmons. If
James Harden is not playing basketball becauseof a negotiation or something, it's not
good for the game. This isn'tgood for the game. And I know,

(12:20):
unfortunately, you know, on theNFL side, these guys hold out
all the time. They hold outlike hot cakes, you know, money
time, hold out, hold out. You know, Lamar Jackson. We've
been hearing about Lamar Jackson last twothree years with this. So unfortunately,
this is something that knew that isnew coming into the NBA. It's been
I want to say, riding withinthe lines probably five or six years to
hold outs the trade demands. Butthese guys know their value and they don't

(12:41):
want to just go along with whateverthey're given. So I hope, I
hope it can be worked out.And I think at the end of the
day, for he and Derrel Moreyto get on the same page is always
best. And writing we've been therebefore. You know, your organization kind
of promises you something. A playerthey sign, draft goes another way,
and and the organization organization just changeslike that. So you gotta take a

(13:05):
lot of the things that your promisewere given ultimately with a grain of salt.
But you know, Ryan Hollands couldnever beat that unspoken Rodney, are
you are you with him? Areyou against it? Where you staying?
Man? Well cringing. Here's thething, you know, first off,
he opted in from from all accounts, he opted in because they did have

(13:26):
something verbally that he was going toget traded or they want to trade him.
Otherwise he probably wouldn't have bopped itin. So that part I think
may have been disingenuous by by DarrylMoray in the seventy six ers, and
it could have been a reality tolisten, we tried to trade you,
but we couldn't make a deal withthe Clippers, and James probably felt help
I felt hurt. But the thoughtof hey, listen, we talked about

(13:48):
this, I'm gonna opt in andthen you're gonna trade me, and it
sounds like that's what happened, andit didn't happen, and then James gott
got very upset about that. Butlike you said, to go publicly and
to call the the man a liarpublicly like he did, and then say
it repeatedly, it's not good forthe game and the speaking of the game.

(14:09):
Are you comfortable where where the NBAis? I mean, you talked
about the NFL, and yes, they're been holdouts for years and guys do
what they got to do to tryto get their money. But in the
NBA, guys demanding trades, Guysdemanding trade after they just got to a
place where the NBA is now?Is that good or bad? Or where

(14:30):
it's going? Man, how doyou feel about you know, players having
that kind of I letna say power, because the power is a different that's
wrong where because I believe players shouldhave the power of their own destiny.
But to publicly demand trades and toyou know, after you just get to
a place, are you comfortable withwhere the NBA is now? I want
you to remember what I'm gonna sayright now. This is a big business

(14:54):
talk. The most uncomfortable place Iam in the NBA is not about the
trades. It's not about guys wantingout. It's not about guys picking their
destinations to who they want to playwith. We've all gone to pick up
games and we get the three foldbest players. In fact, we get
that call to that buddy and bringthem in the most uncomfortable place I am
in the NBA right now. Rememberthis is who is the next face of

(15:18):
the league. Lebron James has donethis for over twenty years for you guys,
and played at a high, highlevel, and we knew he was
next since he was in high schooland he overtook every expectation that was on
him. The biggest fear I haveof the NBA right now is who's the
next step? We are playing RussianRoulette with who the next guy to take

(15:41):
that jump is? Is it Jah? Is a Zion? Is it Luca?
That's my fear. And to answerwhat you said about the trade demands,
I think that those things are gonnahappen. Riding is just a part
of the game because these guys knowwho they are, they know their value.
And I know it's easy to pointfingers because you public see publicly see

(16:02):
players, but you don't see thethings that happened or what the organization does
behind the scenes. So from mystandpoint, I don't like it, but
I understand it. And unfortunately theplayers can't hide. Our salaries are public.
When you get fine this public, all these things are known. But
as far as the business wise,I think it pells in comparisons and not

(16:23):
knowing who the next guy to takethat torches and everybody says, I like
the parody in the league. Andthere's no super team than this guy,
that guy. No super teams aregood for the league. Having the best
player, having a dominant guy isgood for the league. Rodney, You
know what when when Magic, whenBird won, it was good. Okay,
right when Magic won it went onhis run. It was good.

(16:44):
When Michael went on his run,it was great. And Lebron doing what
he does, the spectacling. Who'sthat next faces? Who do you think
it is? Who do you thinkit is? And who you think it
should be? Or it would begood if that person was ultimately the face
of the league. Job will bebest, Undoubtedly, job will be best.

(17:06):
Uh. He's electric, He's gotthe swagger even with all the stuff
off the court that's going on.Well, I would see, don't it's
gonna be hard man? Like hegonna like championships make you forget what happened
off the court, Like like hegotta go win some championship and all all
is forgiven? Right? But butwasn't the NBA ready to embrace him to

(17:26):
be that guy? Uh? Youknow, up until a couple of years
ago, and then we got intoyou know, the total of the guns
and all the things that he didoff the court. It felt like the
NBA was ready to embrace him asbeing that face and all these things happened
off the court. Now they're takinga step back and say, okay,
should he be? Should he be? I mean, it's hard when you

(17:49):
got that kind of controversy they're tryingto make you. That's why it was
frustrating to see him do it.You know, things happen repeatedly is you
knew he was the next guy upand when going to be the next guy
up and wanted to be he wasgonna be embraced by the league. And
now the league gotta step back andsay, okay, this is this is
a little too much to make thisguy the face of the league. And
I think it's gonna be a problemfor him. It is gonna be a

(18:11):
problem. Like I said, theonly waits for him to overshadow it.
He got to win two or threechampionships, not just him playing basketball staying
out of trouble. Don't get mewrong, It will slowly go away and
be like, oh, that usedto happen to be something you have to
go and look up. But you'retalking about like kind of forgotten there,
like, oh, man, let'smove forward. He got to win two
three championships like it was that bigof a h oopsie. No no.

(18:33):
And then, like I said, think about Lebron James as much as he
the most criticized player, they don'tget it. No trouble off the course,
that crazy crazy can't stand in theoh, people can't stand them just
seeing his face. And the mandoesn't get any trouble. Twenty years in
the league. You don't hear aboutscandals. You don't hear about anything unbelievable.

(18:56):
Hey, let me ask you thisthough. Ryan Hollis joined hes in
for Fred today. We're on foran hour, so we're just talking,
man, We're just talking like we'rethe barbershop. Who who do you do
you think that a foreign player canbe the face of the of the NBA,
Like, you know, the Jokerobviously went on a crazy run this
year. Big you know, bigtime, big time player, Luca,

(19:18):
Luca, you know, fabulous player. Uh even got the Greek freak who
you know wanted a few years agoand and really is a guy that that
kind of can get it behind. But he's not American bread, you know
what I mean? Can a foreignguy be that true face of the NBA.
It's gonna be tough because you're right, technically this should be right.

(19:44):
We're kind of looking it should beJoel or it should be a Yo kids,
or should be y honest out theCooper. I will say, yannest
is, it is the closest thing, but it just ain't the same.
And I think when when when wecrown this guy, it's got to come
with championship, you know. Andeven as we say this, like the
league tried to do it with KawhiLeonard, but Kawhi is like, I'll

(20:07):
do what I need to do.I chill, but I just want to
go hang with my family, beinga normal guy dog. I don't like
Lebron likes to come in. Look, Lebron don't feel right if the lights
saying no, Kawai, I don'tneed none of that. He probably went
and had an ate the same oldmeal Shire with his family after winning the
championship, and it was it wasno big deal, but the league was
like Kawai taking Ui was like no, right, right? I wanted no

(20:30):
parts of it. Janna Sanskoupo willbe the closest thing, but it will
be tough. If I could giveyou the reason of why it would be
hard for for him. Listen,my man Yoki said, I can't wait
to get back home and horse racing, right, do I hold on?
Righting? Do I have to goto the parade? Right? Yeah?

(20:56):
Yeah, not quite the face you'relooking for. Huh. They don't.
They don't value with the same, you know. And I think Jannis of
the foreign players will probably be theclosest, uh, the closest guy.
He dunks, he's got energy,he's got a championship to him. Uh,
you know, doesn't mind speaking hismind. He has an amazing story,

(21:17):
got no trouble, probably one ofthe best. He go look up
Yanni South of the Cool. Hereally wants to got one of the best
stories. Behind the scenes. Manguy takes care of his brothers. I
mean, he's he is the guy, you know. But I think it
is gonna be tough. But Ithink that that comes along with the championships,
that comes along with the team thatjust like even if Lebron didn't win
it, like he was there, dog like it was crazy. It was

(21:40):
like the way he was just hewas just slopping his way to the NBA
Finals. At a certain point,he was coming in fifty and six and
the acet and still going to thechampionship. Man went to the straight eighth
straight. You know that that wasabsolutely phenomenal. Stay staying with that,
uh Ryan? Or if you paidattention at all to Team USA and the

(22:00):
World Cup and what they're doing outthere, and do players care you know
about that? I know it's notthe Olympics, but do players current players
do you think care about playing onthese Team USA or the World Cup and
other things like that? Does itmatter? Because it doesn't feel like everybody's

(22:22):
kind of embraced this whole World Cupthing right now. It's just everybody's attention
span is not really on it.There's levels to this, Okay, So
you know the Paul Georges or Kawai'sor Lebron's or staffs are going you know,
we've been there, we've done that. We got to arrest this offseason.
We can't be going out and playing. You know, it's not that
time. Or maybe if the teamis built around us. You know,

(22:45):
I remember Team USA kind of didthat with an older Kobe Bryant and see
Kobe, Kobe don't get enough credit, you know it, right, And
you remember that Kobe went in andsaid, I'm gonna go play and commit,
but I'm also bringing Lebron and dWade and these boys, you know,
and and Chris Paul all with me. You know. So it took
that. But ultimately, at theend of the day, if you are
a guy on the CUSP or youngeror should be playing and you weren't picked

(23:08):
or you didn't make the team, you're salty, man. You frustrated,
you know. And I've done someTeam USA stuff Pan American Games Old Younger,
nineteen and under team and when youdo it, you're fighting to get
there. And wants you to tellyou're like, dang dog, this is
a two month commitment out the summer. You know. It's a grind for
these guys to play. But it'sfunny. I was asked this yesterday or

(23:30):
the other network and one of thethings that that for me, that that
stood out, I think Anthony Edwardsis making a big leap and he's a
guy that the entire world is lookingat right now. We talk about face
of the NBA. He's going, hey, dog, I got I got
that in factor. I don't cutyou threes. I'm box office. I

(23:51):
made no mistakes. If we takeoff, he's making some noise for himself.
Man, Yeah, it feels likehe is. He's he's he's taking
advantage of this whole situation. Andhe went off the last couple of games.
And he's a guy like you said, that has all the tools,
but he's looking at this says, hey, this is about to shoot my
brand through the roof, and I'mgonna take advantage of it. Ryan Hollins,

(24:11):
my man is joining me today onlyan hour show, a quick show.
When we come back live from Cleveland. Our man David Vasset is going
to join us talking about some Dodgersand can they stay on that roll?
So stay tune and AM five seventyLA Sports. That's right, we are
the home of the Dodgers. Myman David vasse is gonna join us shortly
and we will get into some dodgeto talk before they play the Cleveland Guardians

(24:36):
today, Ryan Hollins and for FredRogan, Only an hour show today.
You guys to talking a little bitof NBA, but staying on that real
quick, Ryan, before we getto day. Have you seen the latest
photos of Anthony Davis. Man,they got him in the gym, they
got him bulked up. Man,he's got guns. He's I don't wanna
say he's looking like he's ready forthe UFC. Man, but he looked

(24:59):
like he bulked up and got awhole bunch of muscle going on in that
body. Now I gotta see it. Man, I didn't get a chance
too. That's I saw Anthony Davis. It doesn't he was doing fight training,
you know, I know he sawthat video. He was he was
throwing punches and you know the toughthing, Rodney. I know you've never
done this, but anytime you seesomeone throw a punch, they always get

(25:21):
so critical. Many you get challengedto a fighting immediately or and it always
it makes me laugh too. Ifyou ever see Floyd Mayweather walking around and
right, I know you've seen this, yea, you got like forty bodyguards,
yes, with it, because everybody, everybody like I could beat you
up. You know, I wantto challenge. I want to challenge.

(25:41):
I think I can take him.I think because when you see Floyd walking
around, but he's a he's nota big guy's not gonna somebody's gonna overwhelm
you by just looking at him.But he certainly can't throw them hands.
And if you want to challenge him, man, you better be ready for
a dog fight. But no,he looks he looks really good, Ryan,
And I'm just thinking out the mindsetthat he has right now or maybe

(26:03):
going into this uh, going intothis season. He he the last run
where they made it, made itto the Western Conference finals, and I
think, you know, not alot of people believe the Lakers would make
it there, but they did. They showed up shot. I think they
finally came together as a team. They added the right pieces. A D
did work in the playoffs. Iknow everybody talked about the joker and in

(26:26):
his run, but A D hada I think he had a really good
playoff run as well. Do youthink it's time or he realizes, hey,
you know, as much as everybodybelieves Lebron's gonna play forever, I
gotta be ready to take this teamover, put this team on my back
now going forward. I would hopehe would have seen that, you know

(26:48):
already. But here's the thing witha D. It's all about health and
sometimes you know, I'm always verycareful to criticize guy who's not healthy.
You don't know what's going on withtheir body. And I know the frustration.
He just got the He's got anice little extension, he got the
back. Obviously, the Lakers areare ten tails down committed to Anthony Davis,

(27:12):
and Lebron has been giving that confidenceto him. And I know from
eight EASTI ie, i't know.He wants to be on the floor and
wants to be there playing. Sothe commitment for him is like we see
it, Rodney in the weight room. Why is the weight room important?
That's longevity. The older that youget, you start to realize that that
weight room keeps you on the court. And it's funny you say that.

(27:34):
I talked about him earlier, man, my old man, right, Juwan
Howard. I remember playing with Jawanand him saying that, you know,
the weight room is why he wasable to play. Absolutely it is.
And speaking a guy that lives inthe weight room. Let's bring him on
right now, our guy live fromCleveland. My man, David Basset,
what's up, David Basset, what'sgoing on? How did you know that

(27:59):
Rodney? They on the same flooras the gym in our team hotel.
They know I like to pump ironearly and often. Yes you do,
brother, Yes you do. Iknow. You know. It's still summertime,
so I know the guns are outman, all right, Dave,
JD Martinez goes on the IL.What can you tell us? Man?
How long? Well it's the rightmove because he's been dealing with this for

(28:26):
three weeks and the Dodgers now witha twelve game lead in the division.
No need to keep trying to pushit. Get this thing right. I
know j D doesn't want to sitout. He wants to keep trying to
trying to work through this, butthe Dodgers need him for October. JD
would like to be back for Septemberto keep adding to his great season.

(28:48):
So this is the right move totry to get this right. And Michael
Bush was called up. He'll joinus on the pregame show. He'll be
Tonight's DH for the Dodgers against withsinder garts Hey, Dave, Dodgers are
seventeen and one man. Some peoplesay they're picking too soon. When you
look at this team, is thissomething they can keep up? Are they

(29:11):
hot? They feeling good. Sois it too soon or is this just
hey right up their alley? Now? The reason why they've only lost two
games in August, Ryan, it'sbecause they're starting pitching. So that's the
biggest reason why their offense has beentop five all year long. It's been
the inconsistencies of their bullpen and theirstarting staffs, specifically with the starting staff

(29:37):
injuries that has contributed to the Dodgersnot really being able to put together long
winning streaks. But they've gotten healthy. Julio Areas is back on track.
Clayton Kershaw, who is starting tomorrow, is back healthy. So those are
the reasons why they've only lost twogames in August. And it's not peaking
too soon, it's actually getting healthy. That's the right time, no,

(30:00):
no doubt. And you mentioned thepitching, Dave, and we learned that
obviously Tony Gonslin is down. Nowwhen you look at the rotation, Dave,
how do you see it going.I know we got Clayton, we
got Julio's gotta be your horse. And I love the way Julio's looking in
the last couple of starts. Itfeels like he's back to the old Julio.

(30:22):
You got him and Clayton is it? Is it? Bobby Miller is
the next guy up in that thirdspot? And then how much are we
going to see of Ryan Peppio goingforward? They gonna try to get him
more work. Well, Bobby Millersolidified his spot in the rotation, and
even when they traded for Landfolin andcru Shot came back, Bobby Miller was

(30:44):
the last man standing from all thoserookies because he proved that he was the
best out of the three that earnedthat spot. But yeah, next guy
up to take the spot in therotation for Tony Gonslin seems to be Ryan
Pepio. He pitched great in hisseason debut five innings after Ferguson opened.
So it would make all the sensein the world that Pepio is here in

(31:07):
Cleveland with the Dodgers for him tocontinue to be on that five day routine.
You just talked about Lancelin. He'sbeen absolutely balanced since he's been wearing
the Dodge are Blue. What's thedifference, man? Is it it just
being in la Man, getting gettingused to the good weather man talk about
him and his improvement in his bigturnaround. Well, number one, I

(31:30):
think we started to come out alittle bit. How toxic of a culture
it was in Chicago with the WhiteSox. So I think just getting out
of there for Lancelynn and Joe Billyreally rejuvenated themselves in their season. It's
a lot different pitching for a teamthat you don't believe in, you believe
the way they're doing things, andthen you come to a team like the

(31:52):
Dodgers that have their site set onOctober. That makes a huge difference.
You know, you guys know thatbeing former athletes, the culture actually breathe,
you know, the vibe that you'repitching with or you're playing with.
And the Dodgers have always been atthe top of kind of encouraging pictures to

(32:15):
consolidate their repertoire, work with whatis best and not feel the niche to
throw everything that isn't as good asmaybe your two best or three best pitches.
And I feel like that's what they'vedone with lance Flynn told them to
scale back on the cutters and throwmore of those forcing fastballs. Yeah.
No, you're absolutely right about theculture, and I've been on both sides

(32:37):
of that in some places that mancouldn't wait to get out of that feel
like you were in jail and thenother places. Man, you just didn't
want to leave. And that helpsguys stay in the building study a little
bit longer because you want to bethere. But culture definitely definitely matters.
Dave we here especially lately and Ithink it was last years or someone that
keeps writing about the Dodgers and howthey're built for the regular season and not

(33:00):
built for the playoffs. When youhear that, does it eat? Does
it body concern you at all?And what could be done or what do
they need to do to feel comfortableor to go into the playoffs without that
belief that outsiders have, Oh,they're only built for the regular season,
they can't handle the postseason and we'regonna get we're gonna get disappointed again.

(33:21):
What does that even mean? Day, Oh, they're only built for the
regular season. Well, there issomething to that, and years passed you
to make that argument, even asrecently as last year, that they were
built more for the regular seasons thanthe postseasonsion. But if Julio Rias is
going to pitch the way he hasthe last five times out, especially the

(33:43):
last couple of times out, allof a sudden, now the Dodgers have
a ace a horse to help themget through October, and then everybody else
falls in line with guys like Kershaw, Lancelimb, Bobby Miller, and now
that the Dodgers have committed to havinga closer in Evan Phillips, the rest
of the bullpen also falls in place. Not to mention the addition of Ryan

(34:07):
Yarborough, It's been described to methat Yarborough could play a very key role
in the postseason, similar to theway Alex Wood did in the twenty twenty
runs. So I would argue rightnow the Dodgers are better built for October
than they were a year ago atthis time. Right on, Davey Dave,

(34:28):
what's tonate night? Dinner menu fortonight? Where are you going?
Where you headed? Oh, Rodney? You know I'm gonna save up my
calories for Boston. I'm not waitingthem a cleeve. Hi, I hear
you, I hear you. Man, pregame is at three days, right.
