(00:00):
Oh yeah, I'm sorry about that. Here we go, Here we go.
It's Wednesday's up day. Rodney Peteand my man, Ryan Hollins is
again in today for Fred Rogan. He's a ten year NBA bet player at
UCLA is current allens for Houston Rockets. A man, Ryan Hollins, Ryan,
how you doing, brother, I'mdoing good. Many Hey, Rodney.
I appreciate you, man, Yeah, you do. I do.
(00:23):
You don't know why. I knowyou may remember this, but I know
early kind of in my broadcast career, I was transitioning and we did a
show together, and I think thiswas one of your first shows of leading.
So you were you were kind ofworking through it, all right,
I gotta do it normally, Fredholds it down. They bring in and
said, no, we're gonna throwyou two athletes together. I'm gonna throw
both of your end and Ridey gonnaleave. But you were you you You're
(00:46):
such a great mentor man like thatveteran presence from the locker room. I
remember you showing me a lot oflove. Man. It was early in
the broadcast career. I was arookie on the other side, man,
But I appreciate you, man.You and a not a lot of guys
do that, Rodney and bring itout. You stick out because some guys
are a little competitive, a littleyou know. But I appreciate you,
man, I appreciate that. Man. I appreciate you saying that. And
(01:08):
uh, you know, when somebodydoes that for you, then then all
you want to do is pay itforward. And you're right, You're right.
I mean, this business is verycompetitive, especially you know all you
know a lot of athletes, itcomes time to that time for you to
retire. What you're gonna do afteryou retire, and this is it feels
like this is a natural progression fora lot of guys. But but a
lot of guys they're not able todo it, or for whatever reason,
(01:32):
right don't they don't have the opportunity, or they thought it was easier,
which happens a lot. They thoughtit was easier than it actually is.
You gotta put the time, yougotta put the ever, you gotta put
the work in. But I appreciateyou saying that, man. And then
and look at you now, brother, you're doing your thing. Man down
there in Houston, You're you're doingdifferent things, man, and just expanding
your career. So I'm proud ofyou. No, man, I appreciate.
(01:53):
Look, I'm trying my best.I still I still have a ways
to go, but I'm trying mybest on this side. All right,
enough of the love fest. Man, We had a disaster yesterday with the
Dodgers. Man, it looked likethey were on the road for another win
in Cleveland. Then the seventh inninghappened and everything, the wheels came off
the wagon. Bobby Miller looked goodon the mound for six innings, started
(02:17):
to come, you know, unloosea little bit, come loose a little
bit. In the seventh inning, they pulled him out, put Caleb Ferguson
in, and then and the wheelsreally came off, and the Dodgers end
up losing eight to three. AndRyan, you know, We've been saying
this all season long, the fanshave, even Dave Roberts has, but
anybody that analyzes and watches the Dodgershave been saying this all season long.
(02:40):
Is the Dodgers are great offensively. They can score runs with the best of
them. They can they can hithome runs, they can hit doubles.
They got Mookie, they got FreddieFreeman, they got Will Smith, they
got JD J. T. Martinezand and everybody in that lineup can hit
the ball. Key kids coming inand he's on fire. Changed his disastrous
(03:00):
season coming from Boston. Now he'swith the Dodgers. He's hitting the ball,
they can score runs. But whatabout that bullpen? What about that
pitching staff? And it reared hishead yesterday in that seventh inning and Dodgers
end up losing. Man And wetalked about this a little bit yesterday about
a team being built for the regularseason versus the versus the playoffs. And
(03:20):
when you look at it, youhave to have horses on the mound,
Man, you gotta have It's likein any other sport. Your big guns
have to come out and show outwhat it means the most, and that's
in the playoffs. And right now, the inconsistency. Although the pitching staff
in the bullpen had been trending inAugust in the right direction, it's still
a point of concern. As youknow, you watch this team, Ryan,
(03:45):
and when you look at this teamand look at him scoring runs but
can't really hold up from a bullpenstandpoint like yesterday, does that concern you
as a Dodger guy or Dodger fanor should it. It does concern me,
Rodney. You know, at alllevels, when you win championships,
you gotta be able to play differentstyles. Obviously, you gotta be able
to score, you gotta be ableto hit. That bat has to be
(04:08):
working. But ultimately, at theend of the day, sometimes that pitching
is gonna win you a championship. You know that bullpen. Your depth is
absolutely key. So it does concernme. It almost reminds me a little
bit of and I know they didn'tget that hot during the regular season,
but the Lakers. The Lakers ranup and down with Golden State, right,
(04:30):
they ran up and down with GoldenState. They looked great. Anthony
Davis was dunking everything, Lebron wasflying around. They were able to score
the basketball. But when they raninto the Nuggets, and as we're talking
Dodgers, they had to do whatthey had to play a different style.
The Nuggets slow you down, theypost you up. You know, you
needed to defend. The Lakers wereable to score, but because of that,
(04:51):
it finally caught up with them. There was a big buzz around the
Lakers and the way they played ina R fifteen and Dienzelo Russell and I
cheat playing career basketball. So whenI when I look at the Dodgers,
I do have some of those sameconcerns. And you're saying, hey,
how do you address this right now? And keep in mind we're nitpicking it
(05:11):
seem that's has a second best record, okay, in all the baseball right
But Rodney, you know you've seena lot of sports. It is a
cause for concern. But my questionwould be to you, what do you
do at this point in a yearto address it? You know what,
how do you fix that problem?Yeah? I mean that's that's the big
question, right Even Dave Roberts saidthat, he said, look, I'm
not I'm not pushing the panic buttonright now. I've got to go with
(05:35):
what I've got. The trade deadlineis coming gone, you know. I
know a lot of folks were alittle upset about what the Dodgers didn't do
at the trade deadline, but itlooked like it was paying off. They
brought in Lance Land. It feelslike he resurrected his career because he's been
lights out since he's been a Dodger. But certain little things that I think
it's glaring that everybody knows is youknow what happens when you get to the
(05:57):
sixth inning, seventh inning? Canthat bullpen hold up? And right now,
I think he's right, you almostyou gotta go with what you have.
I mean, Sandy Kofax is notwalking through that door. You know,
he didn't find a fountain of youthand walk through that door to help
safety. So you're gonna have togo go with what you got. And
and you know, is that theperfect recipe to to go into the playoffs.
(06:20):
Probably not, But you gotta findYou gotta keep mixing and matching and
find guys that are comfortable in theseventh inning. Somebody's comfortable in the eighth
inning. Evan Phillips has shown thathe can be a pretty good closer.
But but there's not much you cando. Ryan, like you mentioned,
you brought up the analogy of theLakers. It's exactly right. You know,
(06:40):
they made some moves during the middleof the season that got them going
and got them all the way tothe Western Conference Final, but they ran
up in to a matchup that didn'tsuit their style of play. And when
you were in baseball and you getto the to the postseason. First of
all, starting pitching gonna be keybecause you're gonna need guys to get you
(07:00):
at least to the sixth inning. And then what did your bullpen? Do?
You know? You remember you goback to when the Dodgers wanted in
twenty twenty. That was the themeof the Dodgers from an offensive standpoint was
all we want to do is getto their bullpen. We get to their
bullpen, we feel like we're gonnawin. I don't know you remember,
but it was a key moment inthe World Series of that year when the
Tampa Bay Rays were just shutting theDodgers down. And what's the name of
(07:27):
the picture he was left hand wasBlake Snell. Blake Snell. Yeah,
that's right, Blake Snell was shuttingthe Dodgers down. And it was I
believe it was like the seventh inningand they came in and got him,
and he was pissed because he wasI think throwing a one inn or two
hitter, but he had shut himdown. He was pissed, did not
want to come out of the game. He had the Dodgers number, but
they felt like a third time aroundthe lineup. I don't know if we
(07:49):
want you to go, and heand you could see it all over his
face that he was pissed. Butthen they flashed a camera at the Dodgers
dugout and Bookie Betts was on deckand all Muki all you saw was Mokie
Best smiling and just jeezing because he'slike, okay, now we got him,
now we got him. Sure enoughthey went, Dodgers went on and
win that game, got to theirbullpen, and so that's what people look
(08:11):
at, and teams look at,Okay, you're gonna throw kersh'all out there,
and yes, Julio's found his formagain, but that's okay. We'll
get you to the seventh inning andthen we're gonna get to that bullpen.
So there's not much you can doother, like I said, than mixing
and matching. But is that gonnabe enough? You know? Can you
rely on your offensing? Can youroffense carry you all the way through it?
(08:35):
I'm not so sure. Ryan Hollins, Well, I'll say one thing,
as I try to answer as bestmy own question. If you create
a culture and you identify who youare, what do I mean by that?
If you're the Dodger. You say, say we don't have the greatest
pitching, we ain't gonna we ain'tgonna shut you out. In fact,
we can't. But you know what, let's get to a place where we
(08:56):
can allow our bats to win thegame if we can hold on. You
know, and Rodney, I don'tknow if you've been on a team like
that. When I played in Dallaswith Dirk, I knew I was a
defensive guy. Dirk wasn't. Dirkwas the complete opposite, but he could
score that thing, right. ButI knew if I could get a block
shot, or still, if Icould hedge, if I could kind of
(09:18):
guard his man and my man, okay for a possession, we were going
to score on the other end.We just that was the culture. We
knew if we got out and ran, you could make things happen. So
I think if you're the Dodgers, would all due respect, you got your
Dave Robert, Dave Roberts. Yougotta accept who you are. Right,
(09:39):
Let's say, who can just getme there? I'm not gonna I don't
need perfection out of y'all. Butwe can get there. We can win,
and when we're not gonna get upsetif we give up a few runs,
we gotta score. Just knowing youridentity as a ball club, that's
everything. Yeah, No, Imean it is at this point. We're
looking at the end of August, right, and except tem is coming up.
(10:00):
You got roughly a month a littleover a month before the playoffs start,
and so the time you know, for either you can't bring anybody else
in, but the time for tryingto experiment, I think that's over.
And I guess do you do youkeep trotting, you know, the same
guys out there, or do youtry in this last days, try trying
(10:22):
to you know, maybe bring somebodyup from Triple A or driving you know,
somebody, put him in a newrole and give him an opportunity to
do that, to see if youcan find, you know, a diamond
and the rougher signs, find aspark somewhere with one of these guys.
And I leaned towards the guys thathave been doing it all year, even
though they may have, you know, struggled and had some inconsistencies. I
(10:45):
think you got at this point justkind of go. You gotta keep trotting.
Ferguson out there, Alex Bessia whofell off this year as a left
hander. You got to trot himout there, because trying to mold a
new person that hasn't done it orhasn't done it a whole lot that's gonna
be difficult to do at this latepoint in the season. It's funny you
(11:05):
say that because you know it,Rodney, and I'm assuming because sometimes you
know, as players at the workplace, wherever you are, whenever there's a
change, it seemed like everybody kicksin the gear, everybody plays a little.
Hey, I don't know, Rodney, I wouldn't know if if this
happened to you, I had Idon't know if I've ever lost the game
(11:26):
after a trade, Like when atrade happens, everybody starts fall. The
next game everybody's or it may notbe that game, but the next game
you're gonna win. Always you needto like everybody bought because you look in
the locker and going you say so, so it's gone. Oh man,
you walk in and you see thatlocker cleaned out, and you see you
(11:48):
know, you see the line upon the board, it's a different name
there, or you're going through differentstuff. So right, am I wrong?
Sometimes you shake things up, butI think what you're saying is that
if you do it this time ofyear, you could lose that locker room.
You know, And if you're DaveRoberts, right, he's got to
know, are these the guys I'veroll with, how sensitive our day?
Is this a group that's gonna respondwhat do I need to do? So
(12:09):
that becomes that becomes problem can beproblematic in the wrong way. Also,
because if you take a guy outthat you are leaning on, you're going,
man, man, you don't wantto lose the locker room. No,
you can't lose the locker room atthis point. And that's what And
again I think that is one ofDave roberts greatest traits is that he believes
(12:30):
in his guys so much. AndI think he gets blamed for that a
lot because he does trust and believein his guys that he may leave him
in a little bit longer, ortrust him a little bit more than some
other to some other managers and believethat guys, Hey, this guy may
be struggling in July, but Ibelieve in him September he's gonna be able
to find it and get it goingagain. But heavily. There's no question
(12:52):
that this postseason they're gonna rely onthe offense more than anything else. But
what I what I do like isthat they do have such a comfortable lead
right now, Ryan Hollins, andthey believe it now. They dropped to
eleven and a half over the ArizonaDiamondbacks right now lead in the NL West.
So they have a comfortable lead thatit's not a pressure night in and
(13:16):
night out, day in and dayout to go have to win a high
leverage game because they need to winit. They got some they got some
breathing room. And I'm gonna askyou, do you feel more comfortable in
that position having some breathing room orwould you be would you rather be in
a situation where you gotta play, you gotta fight every night, so you
gotta be on top of your gameand you're playing some basically almost playoff games
(13:41):
through September to get you ready forthe playoffs, or would you like to
have the comfortable lead and just beable to cruise and mix and match guys.
It depends on a locker room. You know, if you've got a
veteran team, that means you canrest guys. You don't need to push
it out, you don't need torisk injury. Depends on what the locker
room is or if you have guysthat need that battle testing. You need
guys who need to go through thatfire. You know, a veteran group
(14:05):
can step out and and and andwith a big lead turn it on.
They know who they are, youknow righting. You know later in your
career, you know who you are. You know how you warm up,
you know how you mentally go andprepare for a championship run. And some
guys need to be battle testing.Sometimes it's not even about being veteran.
It's just it's just the new guyswho haven't been there before. Uh,
(14:26):
those are all factors. And it'sfunny. We did a show earlier in
the year and we were talking aboutUrias was struggling. He wasn't bringing it.
Now he's bawling. So so youknow, we're keep in mind now
we're nitpicking. We're nitpicking, butwe know that you want to bring a
real championship to LA. That's that'swhat these guys are playing for, not
(14:46):
just ain't playing for nothing else.So we're nitpicking right now. So to
answer these are rich people problems youlike, if you sitting out front,
I think it's a veteran group thatyou don't want to be panicking. Because
the thing about La. You knowthis, if you start stinking it up
in LA, there's a lot ofmedia, a lot of buzz, a
(15:07):
lot of pressure, and you wantthese guys coming in not too comfortable,
but comfortable. You don't want tobe playing from behind. But Rodney,
you're right. There is a valuein getting that camaraderie, getting hot at
the right time. And there aresome people questioning all the Dodgers peeking too
soon? Is this fool's gold?Yeah, and any any other city,
most other cities being having at elevenand a half game lead at the end
(15:30):
of August, they'd be jumping forjoy. If you're in Pittsburgh, you're
in Cincinnati right now, you'd begoing crazy because your team is up by
eleven and a half runs eleven anda half games on September. But not
not here in LA. You gottawin it, and people are already,
you know, positioning themselves. Okay, how are we gonna look at the
playoffs? This is for the regularseason. Is the regular season? We're
gonna get to the playoffs, andthat's what we're gonna be judged by it.
So that's how it works in La. Listen they Ryan Hollins is in
(15:54):
for Fred Rogan. Today we're gonnachop it up. There's some rain in
Cleveland, so we're gonna be withchingfor the full three hours a day.
And this look around the Wild nL West is brought to you by SoCal
Gas. Don't dance around safety contacteight one one two business days before digging
around your home. Go to SoCalgas dot com slash eight one one to
(16:15):
learn more. AM five seventy LASports Day two. We're ready to go,
man, three hours, let's go, baby. Oh yes, we
chopping it up on a hump day. It's Wednesday. The sun is shining.
It's beautiful out man. This isthis is La, right Man.
I didn't ask you how did yousurvive over the over the weekend with the
(16:36):
hurricane well quotes an air quote hurricanethat happened to La over the weekend.
Man, Look, I was fine, Rodney, and when all you know,
like you said, the air quotesas expected, man, just seemed
like a lot of rain, man. That's it, right, Yes,
I couldn't believe it when I sawpictures of folks out out at at Home
Depot and Costco buying up all kindsof water and buying narrators and like it
(17:00):
was the apocalypse, Like things gonnaend in the world. And you know,
ain't no word and way in theworld the hurricane is gonna hit La.
I mean it got down grade.I was just waiting for it to
get downgraded from hurricane to a tropicalstorm, which it did like the day
before. But man, it justdoesn't happen. I mean we and someone
(17:22):
was telling, yeah, it wasnever gonna happen because the cold water just
slows it down. I don't know, for whatever reason, it's a reason
why we don't get them. Soit was just it just shows you how
people will hear things and see thingsand start to panic. Man. I
was just I was just mesmerized atfolks out there. But it is what
it is, La. Folks don'tknow how to drive in the rain anyway,
man, So you know how ithappens out here. Hey, Hey,
(17:44):
Ryan, I was something cool happenedover the weekend, and and I
don't want to get your take onit because it's it's It's something that I
always appreciate and and really locked inmy playing career and now I enjoy all
types of sports. But Mookie Bettshad a great day when the Dodgers played
that doubleheader because they were getting readyfor all the rain that was coming on
(18:07):
Sunday, so they played a doubleheaderon Saturday, and it happened to be
Lebron James bobblehead night. And bythe way, Dave Vasse is gonna join
us in a few minutes. He'sgonna talk about, you know, what's
going on in Cleveland and there's arain delay and what that looks like.
So stay tuned for him. He'sgonna be here with a few with us
in a few minutes. But itwas Lebron's babblehead night, and Mookie had
(18:29):
a great day at a home runin the first home run in the second
game, and after the home runshe saluted Lebron who was up in a
box and after he crossed home playedand then Lebron tipped his cap or took
off his cap and saluted Mookie back. Mookie Betts back. I just thought
that was such a cool moment becauseI, you know, as I played
football but I appreciated the other sportsand what other guys were doing. And
(18:53):
I was a dual sport guy,So I played baseball in college and and
like to think that I could haveplayed in the MLB if i'd have chose
that route. But I always appreciatedthe other sports, and my first years
in Detroit, early years in Detroit, I got to know Isaiah Thomas and
Joe Dumars and John Sally and thatwhole Bad Boys team because it was right
(19:15):
there. I was there in ineighty nine ninety, so that was right
at the height of the Bad Boys, So I got a chance to hang
out with those guys and and reallyappreciate what they were doing. Man,
do you have have you always hadappreciation for other sports and for whether it
be football, whether it be baseballor other things, because I think most
athletes do. There's something I thinkDrake said it in his song we want
(19:41):
to be them and they want tobe us, Like you always it never
fails, Rodney. I'll be workingwith a with a football guy or a
baseball guy and it comes time totalk basketball, they get so excited.
And Rodney, whenever the football questionscome up, we get that US basketball
guys, for the most part, gets so excited, or the rappers you
(20:03):
see Drake in the lamp lines ofKentucky, or or or putting an open
gym in his house, or doingthis stuff because he secretly wants to be
an NBA player, And all theall the NBA guys, all the football
player what do we what do theydo? They wrap, they're going to
boom, they rap right. Oh, there's maybe a competitive nature to it
in excitement of man, I wantto be doing you know what this guy
(20:27):
does that that guy does. SoI think it's just it's just natural.
I think it's just part of thenatural evolution of sport. I don't know
if it's part of the competitive nature. I don't know if we it's from
singing in the shower, going thebackyard and shooting hoops and riding out like
that. But you just suddenly said, yeah, I could have went to
the majors for it. You knowthat it sounds like real light. You
(20:51):
know, they drafted me a littlebit out of college Oakland as that could
you know, sometimes laid back andpicture myself in a in an Oakland A
uniform. But I chose, Ichose to get under center, man and
do the quarterback thing and something specialabout doing that. But but yeah,
I did, man, I justuh, I just always felt that there
was appreciation across line. And you'reright about not even just a sports,
(21:14):
but it's the you know, whetherit be actors or entertainers like rappers,
like you said, fake, everybodywants to do it. Everybody feels like,
oh, you know, this isthis is my this is my other
side, this is my alter ego. I'm you know, I want to
go and be in movies or Ican, I can get on the mic,
you know, and then you startgetting into that realm and you understand
(21:34):
you gotta have the same passion. You gotta have the same talent as you
do to do sport if you're tryingto do something else. Man, you
know what I'm saying, it's thesame dedication. You know what I think
it is. We have been blessedenough to make money doing something we love.
Like Rodney, you would if younever made the NFL, right,
(21:56):
you didn't have the cannon for armed, the i Q all that to pick,
you would be at a park throwingfootball, you know what I'm saying.
Like I would be at a YM C A whooping. Okay,
all right, if I was fiveeleven, I'd be out there who so
we feel, I think in asense to answer the question, we'd be
doing something we love for free.So we see another. Oh, I
(22:18):
love to you know, play basketball. I love baseball. Yeah, I
could have done that, like youknow, and then then you got the
ego to confidence off. I couldwell, I put it toward absolutely,
let's bring this man on and coulddo all sports. He played them all.
He's in Cleveland and the rain DavidVassell, Dave, what is going
(22:38):
on in Cleveland? Are we gonnasee any kind of game today? Well,
we hope so Rodney. Right now, there's heavy rain coming down,
there's lightning, there's thunder here IProgressive Field, there's wind. So all
of the elements have certainly dropped herein downtown Cleveland. The Dodgers have canceled
(23:00):
batting practice and they are hopeful toget this game started on time, but
the forecast shows rain throughout the night. And look, this is not ideal
for the Dodgers because they have thegetaway day tomorrow to go from Cleveland to
Boston, and when they get toBoston on Friday rain is definitely in the
(23:21):
forecast out there as well. SoMajor League Baseball is hoping they get at
least five innings in tonight. Yeah, we hope so and Dave just kind
of going back to yesterday. Ithink what we've been concerned about, I
guess what we've been talking about allyear long kind of reared his head again
when it came to the bullpen.I thought Bobby Miller looked good for sixth
(23:45):
innings. I kind of held ittogether, and then the seventh inning kind
of rolls around. He gets takenout and Ferguson comes in and the wheels
come off the wagon man, andit's been a concern, and more specifically,
I think the left handers coming outof the bullpen has been something of
concern. So how did you feelabout yesterday? What was that? Do
(24:07):
you feel like that was a oneoff? Feel like like Ferguson had an
off night or are they gonna mixit up and bring in some new arms?
What are your thoughts on how theDodgers go forward? All right?
Well, Number one, yes,it was an off night by Kayleb Ferguson.
Number two, Bobby Miller, Ithought he pitched really well. Got
(24:30):
twenty swings and missus, that's themost he has had all year long,
and I thought it was refreshing thatthey allowed him to go out and start
the seventh inning. But when you'regoing batter to batter, what that means
is the first batter that gets onbase, that's when you pull the plug
on your starting pitcher. But DaveRoberts allowed them to keep going for another
(24:53):
batter, and now all of asudden, you have two on one out
for Caleb Ferguson, who usually comesin and starts a clean inning, and
he was not on his game. That was obvious. So I thought it
was a good move to send Millerback out there for the seventh inning.
But if you're going batter to batter, you take the picture out after he
(25:15):
allows one runner on base, whetherit's a home run or excuse me,
whether it's a face it or awalk. So you know, I had
no problem with that. And asfar as a left handed reliever goes,
yeah, that's been a weak pointfor the Dodgers. Dave the Dude does.
Does Dave Roberts communicate that to theBobby Miller going out for that seven
(25:37):
Hey, you're batter to batter ordoes he let Caleb Ferguson know, Hey,
you may not have a clean inningto start, and some guys feel
better about a clean inning as opposedto coming in the middle of the inning.
Right Well, Ferguson was expecting tocome into that seventh inning because he
was hot, he was warmed up. And the Dodgers do a great job
of not what they call driyant humpinga picture, meaning you're going to warm
(26:00):
them up, set them down, and bring them back up. And that's
something that's the Dodgers. That's abaseball term, Rodney, I feel like
I have full disclosure right here. That's what they call it. Where they
warm up the pictures, set themdown, and warm them back up.
That's not good for arm care forany reliever, and if you do that
too much, it could cause realdamage to pictures. So that's why the
(26:23):
Dodgers are one of those teams thatrelievers appreciate. If they're going to warm
you up, they're going to bringyou in. So Ferguson doesn't need to
be instructed anything. He knows thegroupings of hitters that he's expected to base
and for Bobby Miller, They're nottelling him you're better to batter. They're
just telling him, hey, you'regoing back out there. Dave. Is
(26:47):
there a fill with the Dodgers takingthat disappointing loss now a rain de lay?
Is there frustration that you see amongstthe guys like, dang, we
want to get back out there. Is it like a you know what,
let's get this mental rest, Let'slet's recompose ourselves and this could be a
good thing for the clubhouse. Iwouldn't say they're frustrated. They have a
twelve game lead, so at thispoint in time, it's about trying to
(27:10):
keep everybody healthy. That's part ofthe reason why they're playing. It's safe
with JD. Martinez, And youknow, baseball is a lot different than
basketball. It's an everyday grind. And the reason why the Dodgers have been
so good is because they're worried aboutjust today. They're not worried about yesterday.
And that's how they have fought througha lot of the adversity with injuries,
(27:33):
guys under performing at times to beable to have a twelve game lead
in the NL West. And youknow, Dave Robert said he's not pushing
the panic button, which I don'tthink he should. Like you just mentioned,
they got a twelve game lead. They're they're sitting comfortably and they did
just I mean, it's one game. Look, it's one game on the
road in Cleveland. They've been ona tear lately. It's safe to say
that they're they're not going to changeany type of strategy, right, They're
(27:56):
going to continue to drop the guysout there that been doing it the last
couple of months. Right, there'snot going to be any mix up,
shakeups or anything like that other well, other than guys being injured that have
to be out. Yeah, noshake up, Rodney. I like you
said, it was one game inCleveland. They've won virtually every series since
the All Star breaks, so theyobviously want to continue to play with urgency.
(28:21):
They're not a team. Talking toj D. Martinez and Jason Hayward
veterans on this team, nobody believesthere's going to be any sort of let
up on the year. So that'sa good mentality to have because there's still
a month plus to go into season, and if you start to exhale a
little too soon, that's when thingscan go sideways. All Right, We
(28:45):
got We got to bring this up. We can't leave it out. There
was there frustration or little rumblings aboutyour man, Noah Snyder guard getting the
big dub? Was he talking sometrash out there? What was going on?
Man? One man's trash is anotherman's treasure. Come on day?
Yeah, Well, he was feelinggood about himself that he was able to
escape with six innings. But ifyou watch that game last night, he
(29:08):
was very lucky that his left fielderand his right fielder made great plays or
it could have been a lot uglier. They were hitting the ball really hard
and he was definitely the beneficiary ofsome good defense behind him. Day.
What kind of role we're gonna seefrom are they going to use with Michael
(29:29):
Bush? I think he's going tobe the DH primarily some days like yesterday
against right handed pitching. But DaveRoberts said yesterday he told me that he's
planning on using mun Seat more atDH while J. D. Martinez is
on the injured list and we're goingto see more of Key Kate at third
(29:51):
base. So Michael Bush is goingto fit in wherever they need him.
But look, he's a guy thatis a rookie that is not going to
take at bats away from guys likeFreddie Freeman or Max Munsey or David Peralta
or Jason Hayward. So if theysee a matchup that they feel he can
help them, he will do it. And Rodney, you know, talking
(30:15):
to a couple of players, theyjust use the analogy that everybody's bought into
with the Dodgers is every day they'rea piece of the puzzle and one day
you may be a bigger piece thananother day, and everybody understands that.
So that's the analogy that was usedto describe how everybody has bought in to
(30:37):
trying to play their roles. Andsome days your role is going to be
bigger, some days you're going toplay a different role. And everybody's bought
in. And Michael Bush will aswell. I mean, I look at
this team and the way what youjust said about the culture and everybody buying
in. I've been on several, you know, several different teams in my
career and in the locker room whereeverybody didn't always buy in. I mean
(31:00):
you look up and you see thepadres and how they in fight on that
in that clubhouse, the Yankees areimploding. It's just amazing how when other
players come to this team they automaticallyfall in line to the culture of the
Dodgers. It's something that you don'tsee Dave, and I think maybe sometimes
we take that for granted. Isthat you know a factor of First of
(31:23):
all, I mean, Dave Robertsdoes a great job, but I think
from top to bottom is what theDodgers do to encourage that culture. Am
I right on that? Yeah? But you know, Ronnie, it's about
the veterans. If the veterans aregoing to accept these type of roles,
accomplish veterans like Hayward, Rojas,Peralta, especially Hayward, then everybody else
(31:45):
has to fall in line. IfHayward or Peralta or the veterans were upset
about it, they lead and guyswould follow down that path. So it
really starts at the top with guysthat have a resume, that have swallowed
their egos to be able to bepart of a bigger, bigger picture.
(32:06):
Yeah, no doubt. A daybefore we let you go, I saw
there was an outside chance maybe thatBlake Trinan could make a return this this
season. Is is that a possibility. Yeah, I guess you could call
it a possibility. It's an outsideshot. September. Possibly. I have
a touch base with Blake in awhile, but he was in Arizona on
(32:28):
the last road trip, and hedid look better than what Dave Roberts anticipated
as far as fastball velocity goes.So we'll see where it heads. But
we won't really know until these guysgo out on a minor league rehab assignment.
And time is running out on thatas well, because the minor league
seasons are only a couple of moreweeks. So when you hear about Bueller
(32:52):
and Trynan, I wouldn't get overexcited until you start hearing about them going
out on a minor league rehab assignmentor actually facing hitters in a simulated game
in Arizona. Yeah, I hearyou, all right, Dave. I
appreciate you coming on on short notice. Man, stay dry and go enjoy
some good dinner tonight in Cleveland.Hey, I got some good food there,
(33:15):
spots. Let stay dry anyway,Dave, thanks for coming on,
man, I appreciate it. Okay, thanks guys. Alright, guys,
you got it there, he goesDavid Basset, Hey, stay tuned.
On the other side, we gota lot more three hour shows raining in
Cleveland. We're gonna talk a littlebit about the future of our conference,
(33:38):
Ryan Hollands. The PAC twelve isbasically no more and that's a sad thing.

the Boys and Blue are on theroad, we give away two nights stay
at Fantasy Springs that includes dinner fortwo, a round of golf or bowling

six, nine, eight seven twofive seventy the caller number four, and
(35:07):
you will be on your way toFantasy Springs Resort. Let's go all right,
Ryan Hollins, you and I bothplayed in the Pac twelve. It
was Pack ten for me, Packten for you to back ten for YouTube.
(35:30):
You know you're younger than me,so I didn't know for sure.
And you know the the pack startedthe crumble obviously with usc UCLA decided to
go to the Big ten and thenlater Washington in Oregon. It's our Colorado,
Utah leave for the Big twelve. And now they're grooming Washington again,
(35:53):
Washington and Oregon. I'm sorry, they're grooming Washington Oregon for the Big ten.
Is when you look at this happeningright in front of our eyes,
Ryan, what are your thoughts andmemories of the Pac twelve or Pack ten
and how this happened because I neverthought in a million years that we'd be
looking up in a year or twoand there would be no Pac twelve conference.
(36:19):
You're right, and I think whathappened was UCLA and USC just didn't
get the help. And I'm speakingfrom a national perspective. When there's no
draw to go and see Oregon playconsistently, they're not coming getting better and
better as a university. You're notbuilding legacy with Arizona there. They are
(36:42):
a good school, they're respective, but we're talking national. The writing was
on the wall, and what happenedwas UCLA and USC got tired of carrying
the conference. Is it frustrating?Yeah, I feel like there's somewhat of
a let down, and you know, it's it's kind of like throwing in
the white towel. What ends uphappening? Rodney, And you know this,
You go through all your conference playand you're in a situation where your
(37:07):
preseason schedule has to be so strongthat you just give yourself a chance to
compete or else your conference play you'renot getting You know, you can be
a little over five hundred a conferenceand have a chance to play for a
bowl game or get a strong bidin the NCAA tournament. And when you're
looking forward, that's working backwards. So that is something that ended up being
(37:30):
tough. So am I frustrated?Yeah, does it feel like a you
know, a bit of a letdown. Of course it does. I'd i'd
be lying if it wasn't. Butall that being said, Rodney, I'm
extremely ecstatic for what this is gonnalook like. You're essentially gonna be getting
a bowl game in the middle ofconference. You know, you're gonna be
(37:51):
getting USC versus Michigan or Michigan Statein conference and this is gonna be musty
TV. And I tell how youfrom you know, college kind of struggling
to put butts in seats. Thisis gonna bring this back, bring it
back along with the nil money,And I think it's something I'm extremely excited
for. In recruiting wise, Imean maybe that that's still a draw.
(38:15):
I know, the money for thesekids for sure right now is the big
thing. But you know, havinga chance to be seen and go pro,
I think it's still gonna have avalue in recruiting or be able to
get some of these East Coast kids. Yeah, no, no doubt.
I mean it was the writing wason the wall, and it's unfortunate that
the powers that be in the Pactwelve Conference did not see it happening right
(38:37):
in front of their eyes. Youknow, the next thing, you know,
they look up and like you said, USC, UCLA are gone.
But just some mismanagement and it's unfortunatethat it came down to this. You
mentioned, you know, the gamesthat we're gonna see from a from a
football standpoint, you're gonna see youknow, USC versus Michigan's in regular season.
You know, UCLA is playing OhioState. I mean, it's it's
(38:59):
gonna be some great and it's notreally gonna affect the foot the student athlete
from a football perspective. But whenyou talk about you know, basketball,
Ryan and those conference games are gonnabe in the Midwest and towards the East
Coast, how much of effect isgonna have on the on the players from
a travel standpoint, because that's oneof the arguments people had for not doing
(39:20):
it. We were travel in thepreseason anyways, So so what you what
you do from a logistical standpoint isyou can stay home. You can play
against you know, the pepper Dinesand the North Ridges and the you know,
the San Diego States, because guesswhat you're gonna be doing on your
traveling during the conference time. Sowe're in conference time. You know this,
(39:44):
Rodney, you gotta go get outeast, you gotta go south.
You gotta go and play the competition. Why because if you get some of
those big wins, they roll overinto championship time when you're looking for seating
there. So I think this ishuge, and I think you're just gonna
just gonna kind of flip the schedulebecause Rodney, when we played, we
went to New York, we wentto all these you know, all these
(40:07):
different places to play earlier, andyou're just gonna stay home to start the
season. That's all you're seeing. No, let me say this, Your
season won't be decided in the preseasonan exhibition because you take one big loss,
you're ah, man and the season'sover. Man, you lost that
game. No, man, youyou can have a chance to have a
proper season. Yeah. No,I think so. I think that was
(40:28):
just a very weak argument for thosealways gonna affect the athletes because the travel's
gone, and no you travel anyway, So you got another thirty minutes on
the flats. You know what Imean. It's not gonna make a difference.
It's it's just just crazy. Butjust from a nostalgic standpoint, man,
I look up and go ah,man, even though you know to
powerhouses, but I look forward tothose USC Stanford games. You know,
(40:52):
those those Northern Cow trips and thingslike that, which are gonna be no
more. But anyway, it's justbig business and you gotta see what's happening.
And uh, you know the SoutheastConference, they see what was happening
in BacT twelve. Are you excited? Ohio State combs the plays. This
is a game where you like manyOh yeah, right, must see you
(41:13):
said it. It's must see TVin October. In October, you know
you have to wait. You don'thave to wait till the end of November
and December to to have a bigtime matchup game like you're just talking about.
So no, I'm very very excitedabout it. Hey, congratulations,
Block up Flores. You have oneFantasy Springs Resort casino. You're going to
(41:35):
enjoy it. You're gonna love it. Congratulations Block up Flores. All right,
listen, Hey, on the otherside, we're gonna talk to some
NBA. Get into the Lakers andthe Clippers, what they did in the
off seat, what they didn't doin the off season. Talk a little
bit what's happening around the NBA.Ryan Hollins and for Fred Rogan AM five
