(00:00):
Here we go, Fred Rogan,Rodney, Peter, the Big Friday Show
and AM five seventy LA Sports.Kind of a weird week for us.
A couple of one hour shows yesterdaydidn't get on. Well, we've got
three hours today and Rodney, wehave business to take care of. Rights
business. We've got some business.First of all, we are giving away
Fantasy Springs Resort, casino and spabIt's a two nights day. They love

(00:20):
the Boys in Blue and they lovefans of the Boys in Blue. And
if you're a fan of the Boysin Blue, they want you out there.
It's near Palm Springs. You canplay golf, go bowling, see
a show, layout by the pool. Dinner will be comped. It's two
nights. They want you to winit, and we are doing that between
now and three o'clock. Plus thisjust into us. We have not one,

(00:42):
not two, but three, threepairs of tickets for Tuesday's game Dodgers
and Diamondbacks at the stadium. Threepairs of tickets. Three pairs we got
three. Oh lord, we justgive us free. That's what we do.
We take care of our folks. You in the definition of taking care
of your people gets us that's right. Look and Rodney, that's what we
do. We take care of ourpeople. You know why we do that,

(01:03):
don't you? Because we're killing it. You damn right we are.
We are killing it, all right. So we'll give those tickets away one
set per hour. In the firsthour, we'll do it for the person
that plays Know your Squad. Ifyou win, Know your Squad, you
get the tickets. If you don'twin, Know your Squad, will open
them up for everybody else. Andthen in hour's two and three, everybody

(01:25):
gets a crack. Yeah, yeah, all right, one o'clock hour today,
Boy, this is a good show. Yeah yeah, Justin Turner will
join the show. What our favorite, our favorite care what uniform he's wearing.
He's still our guy, will foreverbe our guy, whether he's wearing
red socks uniform, a met uniform, or whatever uniform he could be wearing

(01:48):
a Canadian uniform. I don't care. He's our guy, Fred And you
know what's interesting about Justin And let'sreally be honest with each other. Yea,
his deal is up. He goesout. He looks around. He'd
like to stay with the Dodgers.Make no mistake, he wanted to stay
here. It didn't work out,and I'm wondering, and you know,
it's it's an imprecise science. Ifthey thought, Okay, how much gas

(02:15):
does he had left in the tank? You know, as the story went,
he wanted a two year deal. They talked to him about a one
year deal. How much gas doeshe have left? Well, I'll tell
you something. If you look theway he's playing in Boston this year.
I tank is full, Rodney,Oh, baby T is full. He's
having a great year. He's almosthitting three hundred, He's got twenty home

(02:36):
runs or something that I mean heis. He is doing what they said
he couldn't do anymore, basically, and uh, you gotta love it.
You gotta love it. And you'rerooting for guys like that. Like I
said, it didn't matter what uniformhe's in. You root for guys like
that. And he's one of oursand been such a mainstay with the Dodgers
for so long, one of theleaders in the clubhouse, one of the
leaders in the community. He andhis wife Courtney, is everything the love

(03:00):
about JT. So I'm looking forwardto talking to him. All right.
He'll be on at one o'clock today. David Vassell joined us later from Fenway
Park. He's out there and duringthe two o'clock hour. Ryan Abraham of
USC football dot Com Trojans do kickit off tomorrow at the Coliseum against San
Jose State. I was just talkingto Kevin. I said, what's the
line, like thirty? What isthe line in that game? USC is

(03:23):
a prohibitive favorite in the game,But yeah, I don't know what the
line is, do you? Iknow the over sixty six, over hundred
sixty six. Don't shot at theTrojans at half point there for at thirty
and a half of thirty and ahalf the line, Oh oh, I
might say they may cover that byhalftime for it. Come on, no,

(03:45):
no, no, no, yeah, I'm not. I'm not gonna
put it all out there like thatbecause you never know. San Jose State.
I think they got a new transferredin quarterback. I believe up there
there ain't no slouts. I knowpeople look at San Jose State and we
can score some points. And that'sthe big question about USC. Did they
get that defense turned around? Didthey get the defense turner? We know

(04:08):
we can score, we know wegot the Raining Heisman Trophy winner he's about
to put on the show and aboutto put on his final act in college
football. But what about that defense? Can we stop anybody? That is
going to be the key question, especially early on in the season, in
these first three to four games.Well, the thing is this, and
you look at those Mountain West teams. They don't play a lot of defense,

(04:30):
but you know, they're kind oflike the old Whack teams, the
Western Athletic Conference, the old ArizonaState teams. We're just gonna put it
up. Yeah, we're gonna putit up on the board. We're just
gonna go for it. We're gonnaoutscore you. That's what we're gonna do.
Yeah, We're not gonna really stopyou. But one thing we are
gonna do is we're gonna score alot of points. You have USC with
a rebuilt defense and a question mark. I think the over under sixty six.

(04:54):
I might take the over. Rodneygonna take the over? Huh,
well, you could fit well.USC might get sixty six on his own,
That's what I'm saying. Okay, let's safe bet I might take the
over in that game. Yeah, all right. Ryan Abraham will be on
here during the two o'clock hour, and we'll talk about that. So the
Dodgers finally got out of Cleveland. As for the series, in the first

(05:14):
game, Bobby Miller looked good.Caleb Ferguson came in, got hit a
little bit, and they lost thatone hit a lot of bit. Well,
okay, I was trying to bekind, be kind, and Bobby
did was great for six and theytrotted him back out there for that seventh
inning. That's when it started tounravel a little bit. But I was,
I was, I was encouraged.Man at him going, you know,

(05:34):
on the road, doing what he'sdoing with I get you know,
he got a groom him because heis he's that third guy. Fred.
Yeah, he's that third guy.So I gotta keep him going. But
I thought he looked It wasn't hisbest out, but I think I thought
he looked pretty good through six.It was just that seventh that kind of
got away from a little bit, kind of bait him. Okay. Now
we moved on next games and that'swhere the fun began. So you have

(05:58):
the Wednesday game. The Wednesday gamewith the rain and the confusion that started
with the ground screw there with therain and then, of course it extended
into yesterday, which was completely bizarre. So let's think about this, and
maybe I don't understand how baseball operates. And if I don't, I'm sure

(06:20):
you'll point it out, Rodney, because you're never shy about telling me I'm
wrong. Oh, Freddy to Freddyis tough love. No, I hear
you, I hear you. Youknow if I need it, I need
it, Okay. I was alwaysunder the impression that once the game began,
the umpires were in control of thegame. Now, that's what I

(06:41):
always believed. When the first pitchis thrown, the umpires are now in
control. They decide, if there'sa power outage, we're gonna stop.
They decide, if there's rain,we're gonna stop. They decide if they're
going to stop based on how muchrain there is. If it's a light
drizzle, we might play. Wemight go on. If it comes down

(07:05):
a little harder, we might callit. So I was always under the
impression that it was the umpires,Rodney, that made those decisions during the
game. To your knowledge, amI right or wrong? You're not wrong.
You're not wrong. But I alsothink that there are it's a collaborative

(07:28):
effort, for instance, if they'rethe umpires are not tracking things that may
happen in the near future in termsof a front coming in or rain coming
in, or thunderstorm or lightning thatmatter. And so I think there's always
especially nowadays, there's always somebody inNew York that is monitoring every single game.

(07:50):
So there may be a situation thatsomeone makes a call to the clubhouses
and say, hey, we gottapause this. We've got a major lightning
storm that's right around the corner, and to avoid that, we're gonna cease
play right now. See we seeif we can't avoid it, so stop
right now, all right. Soyeah, okay, but to my knowledge,

(08:13):
that was not the case in Cleveland. Yeah, I don't think it
was either. There was not amajor lightning storm around the corner. Yes,
I don't think so either. Okay. So in that situation, the
empires are in charge of the gamedirect If it starts to rain, they're
gonna call the game, or they'regonna pause the game, or they're gonna
say play through the drizzle. It'son the umpires to make a decision.
That's why it was so incredibly bizarreyesterday when all of a sudden, in

(08:37):
the ninth inning, the grounds crewassumed command of the game. The grounds
crew made the decision. What areyou talking about, Fred, You got
it to tell you telling me thatthe grounds crew made the decision on their
own to go put the tarp onthe field. Is that what you're telling
me? Yeah, that's what I'mtelling you. No way in hell.

(09:01):
Yeah, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there's like a stoppage,
and these guys looked like they're changingtires at the Indianapolis five hundred.
They are running that tarp out ofthe field. You know, Okay,
well, look, you gotta becareful. It wasn't raining. It wasn't
even raining. There wasn't a dropof rain. And they ran the tarp

(09:26):
out of the field, and theyyou, this is the ninth inning,
in the ninth inning of a game, the first game of a doubleheader that
had to be made up from yesterdaybecause of the rain. So they run
the tarp on the field. Youlook at Dave Roberts. You started laughing.
You just started laughing. And thenthey sat there and it didn't rain.

(09:46):
And they sat there and it didn'train. They could have finished the
game, and then if they weregetting ready for the second one and it
started put tarp on the field,it was getaway gay for both teams.
Everybody wanted to get the hell outof there. They rushed the tarp on

(10:09):
the field. The umpires, well, okay, I guess that's you know,
so he's saying the grounds crew didthat on their own. Friend,
I find that hard to believe.Well, then I'd like to know who
decided that, because the umpire suredidn't seem to know what was going on.
Dave Roberts started laughing. After thegame, the general manager of the
Guardians wanting to the Dodger Clubhouse andapologized, apologized. They got the call

(10:31):
from somebody to put that tarp onFred what is the head grounds keeper.
It wasn't Carl from from from Damn, from Bushwood, from Buchwood, that
society today, it might rain infive minutes. We got to get this
tart bond. Somebody told him todo that, And it was somebody high

(10:54):
up in the league office or oneof the umpire didn't tell the other ones.
I don't know, but they wouldnot just go out there and start
rolling that tarp out there. Thegrounds crew I'm saying, without being told
to do it, Rodney, nobodyknew what was going on. I think
the umpires were confused. Now Iunderstand, as you point out, if
somebody calls from the league office andsays, we have a meteorologist sitting right

(11:16):
here and there's going to be alightning storm in twelve seconds, hurry.
But I mean, what are thesegrounds crew guys doing. Is somebody got
a divining rod and they're standing inthe middle of the field and they're pointing
to stick at the sky and isa point at left. It starts to
shake and they go, oh,my god, rain is on the way.
What was this preventative? That wouldbe like going to the doctor.

(11:39):
You get a physical, you getan EKG, you get everything, and
the doctor says, Rodney, youlook great. I gotta tell you,
I'm really impressed with your heart. You're in great shape. Congratulations on how
you've taken care of yourself, andyou will thank you doctor. He goes,
but listen, I don't know downthe road you might need to bypass.

(12:00):
Why don't we just do it rightnow? But I don't need it
right now. You've just told meyeah, but you might you might so
we better take care of it rightnow. It's going to start raining.
Yeah, we're gonna take care ofit right now. But it's not raining.
It doesn't matter. It may,so we're gonna jump in here on

(12:22):
our own and just take matters intoour own hands. It was one of
the most bizarre things. It delayedthe first game. It upset everybody they
sat there, It delayed the startof the second game, and it just
made no sense. And I cannotfigure out how that could happen. Yeah,

(12:43):
somebody made that call to them.I don't know. I don't know
how it happens in ninth inning whenyou only needed but ten minutes to finish
that ninth inning, probably fifteen minutestops. And like you point out,
it wasn't raining at the time.So let the game be stopped. Buy
rain, not a preemptive strike tosay it may rain in five minutes.

(13:05):
Let's go get ahead of this thingand go stop to play. No,
go finish the game. You've beenyou know, it's you know, it's
a crapshoot. If you if youcan you finish, can you play through
it all? So while it's notraining, try to get in many anything
as you can in and they didn'tdo that. They did the opposite.
They stopped the game in the ninthinning. You might understand it if this

(13:28):
is in the second inning or something, or third inning, that we got
a long way to go, solet's just get this out there now and
wait out the storm. But inthe ninth when you could close out the
first game, go close it out. Even if it's raining in the ninth
you know, you've seen it before. Umpires in the ninth inning if it's
raining, they will try to pushthrough to get it get the game over

(13:50):
with, rather than, you know, rather than stop it. And they'll
make sure it's raining, it's downpouringbefore they actually stop the game if it's
in the ninth inn because the objectiveis to finish that game. So yeah,
it was very, very bizarre. But I just I can't just put
it on the grounds cruise saying thatthey just did that on their own.

(14:11):
All right, So as we beginto play tonight, the Dodgers find themselves
twelve up on Arizona, twelve anda half up on the Giants, eighteen
up on San Diego, thirty gamesup now on Colorado. Let's look around

(14:39):
away Fantasy Springs was Ort Casino inspots the two nights day. We'll do
that this afternoon. Three pairs ofDodger tickets for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks
side at the stadium, one perhour in this hour. If you win,
know your squad, you get them. If not, we open them
up this hour for everybody else. And when we come back. Rodney,
you're not a big I told youso, guy, you really aren't.

(15:01):
No, but you'll get a chanceto be one today. Okay, well,
yes, yes, you know what. I don't care how badly they
want us to do it, slit. We're not doing it now. I
don't care. Feel like I'm ina visa right now. Uh huh?

(15:22):
Are you sure you're positive? Becauseit's Friday. You know what happens on
Friday. Yeah, obviously we don'tcare. You know it. Rodney beat
Fred Rogan and it is a beautifulFriday. It is the day before college
football opens up. Man I'm firedup. I smell the grass like it's

(15:43):
fall already. Do Yeah, comeon, Fred, come on, come
on Rodney. Yeah, all right, No, your squad coming up bottom
of the hour about six seven minutesfrom now. And if you win the
squad as the Lakers, you aregoing to the game on Tuesday. If
you'll lose, we open those ticketsup for everybody. Okay, Joho Tani
the UCL he has done pitching. He can still hit, but you can

(16:07):
tell the wear and tear of along season is now actually taking its toll.
That's what really happened here. Imean, the guys phenomenal. He's
superb. He's doing things that seemimpossible. And bottom line here is that
it got him. It got him, It been him. He can't pitch

(16:27):
anymore this year. You don't knowhow effective he'll be as a pitcher going
forward either. I mean, thiswould indicate, because it's the second time
he has to have a procedure, you're not going to be able to pitch
him and hit him and do everythingyou were doing all the time. At
least that's what it tells me,right, I mean it tells me.
I mean, clear as day asphenomenal as it is that he's able to

(16:48):
pitch and hit and and be aseffective as he's been, especially this year.
I think he's done it more thisyear than he's done it anytime in
his career. It's not sustainable. It's just not sustainable. And we're seeing
that. I you know, Ifelt it was coming at the end of
the year that that arm would getfatigued. And remember, when you pitch,

(17:11):
it's not just the arm, right, You're using your whole entire body,
and it takes a toll on yourfull body. And and something was
bound to be bound to happen. If it wasn't his arm and his elbow,
it would have been something else, because he's putting a tremendous amount of
strain on his entire body. So, you know, we may I'm not

(17:32):
saying that this is gonna happen, but we may have seen, you know,
the last of him pitching and hitting, at least for a number of
games. I mean, I'm surehe can still do it, but I
guarantee there won't be the amount ofgames that he pitched this year. Yeah,
So what does that mean now goingforward? Oh, by the way,
the Angels took Mike Trott off theinjured list and then put him back

(17:53):
on the angled list. So it'sdone. They made their run, they
made their stand, they made theirplay, they went forth. Their season
is not mathematically over, but forall intents and purposes, it's done.
It didn't work, and now youhave to look at what they're gonna do
going forward. There's no Tony staythere because I don't know if somebody's gonna
pay the guys six hundred million dollarsif he can't do both. If he

(18:18):
can pitch occasionally and really hit, well, how much are real good hitter's
worth, because that's what it willturn into. What a little bonus if
he can still pitch. Yeah, but remember that that price point came Rodney
because he could do both right right, And he still may be able to
do both. I'm sure he could, But do you want him to?
That's what it comes down. Doyou do you want him to? And

(18:40):
then if he's a part time starter, like say he only started him twelve
games in the season instead of twentysomething games that he may have started,
I don't know what the answer tothat is, but he certainly can't go
at the rate that he's been goingbecause not only will it will shorten his
career on the mound, it couldshorten his career period if he keeps going
that way. I mean, therewas a train of thought that maybe you

(19:03):
make him a closer. He doesn'tpitch every game, He comes in,
works an inning and he's done.I don't know the strain that would put
on his arm. But maybe he'sjust a closer. You mean, yeah,
come in and close games out.Yeah, that'll be interesting because that
that is, you know, obviouslynot as much of a strain in terms

(19:26):
of pitching and pitching and numbers ofpitches. He's not gonna have the you
know, hundred pitches in a game. He may have fifteen or so twenty,
but still that coming in, beingcold, coming in and at the
end of the game. You know, how much can he do of that?
And if he's your closer I wantedyou want him to be your closer.
You want him to be available asmuch as he can. And how

(19:47):
often are you going to use himin the ninth inning to throw twenty pitches?
You know, I don't know,Well, not what happens, that's
the bottom line. Does this actuallywork in the Angels favor. Think about
this. He's a really good hitter. He's a great hitter, and certainly,
yes, he'll put people in theseats, and yes, you'll be
able to make sponsorship deals because ofhim if you're any club. But as

(20:11):
he's six hundred million dollars now,is he five hundred million dollars? Now?
If he's a good hitter, Ifhe's a good hitter, is he
worth more than Bryce Harper? Ishe worth more than Mookie Betts? Is
he leading the majors at home runs? Fred? He's better than a good
hitter by the way, all right? Is he worth more than Aaron Judge?
Is he worth more than Freddie Freeman? Is he worth more? Because

(20:33):
that's really what you have to lookat now. Now, if he can
pitch as well, we know he'sworth more because he can do two things.
So if that's the case, andhe leads the Majors and Homers,
and you know something, next yearsomebody else may lead the Majors and Homers.
He's a good hitter, he's avery good hitter. But if he
can't pitch, then what's he worth? A lot of money, but not

(20:56):
as much. So this is aproblem for him. Now and it might
work in the angels favor. Yeah, in words, in terms of them
keeping him around, I don't knowabout that. Freddy still at the end
of the day, wants to winand that was the that was the basis
coming out of his camp, thathe wants to be on a winner and

(21:18):
because he can't pitch or may notbe able to pitch as often as he
did this year, doesn't take awayfrom the fact that he bottom line,
he wants to be on a winningorganization. So I don't I don't think
it really fackers in for the Angels. This might be a benefit for them
for them to keep him because it'sabout winning. Still, Yeah, I

(21:41):
think it's really interesting now and itreally speaks too. And this was first
guest, not second guest. Thisis not being an armchair quarterback. And
Rodney even tossed it out earlier inthe year and he didn't wish it on
anybody. What if he gets hurt, then what happens? What if he
gets hurt? Rodney suggested that likethree months ago, what if he gets
hurt? And I suggested not toolong ago and a week ago that shut

(22:04):
him down, shut him down, shut him down for his own good.
Shut him down, you know, let him still hit and do all those
things, but shut him down onthe mound as soon as there were signs
if there was arm fatigue, shutit down. And if you're the new
team or you're a team trying togo after him, are you going after
him in the in the mind ofhim pitching as well, he said,

(22:29):
oh, we only need him fortwelve fifteen games, will really limit his
appearances on the mound. Does thatwork for you or you to say,
listen, we don't even want youto pitch anymore. We want you to
be strictly a everyday player. Andagain, like you said, that money
declines, because that was the sellingpoint from for him and for his camp

(22:51):
was that I can do both.I'm that unique player that's never really we've
never seen this before, so Ineed to be paid like a unique player.
Well, I would ask I wouldask you to consider this as well.
The Angels and its first guessing thisThis absolutely speaks to they should have

(23:11):
moved him. They should have gota bounty last year in return and started
to reconstruct this club. Uh,Mike Trout hurt again. They're you know,
so they're their best pitcher. Can'tpitch and their second best player can't
play. Yeah, And someone sayingthis other the other day said this to

(23:33):
me, is that Mike Trout isas the JJ Watt of baseball, meaning
that when he's on, when he'splaying, he's the best defensive player.
At least J. J. Wattwas in his prime and was unblockable and
the great, but he would occasionallyalmost every other year it felt like J.

(23:53):
J. Watt had a season injuryinjury, you know, and it
was on four It because he playedso hard, he played with such aggressions.
But it was just a matter oftime whether it be week eight,
week twelve that JG. Watt gota torn peck or dig Watt did something
and was out for the rest ofthe year. And it feels that similar

(24:14):
to Mike Trout that and I don'tknow this off top of my head that
he is played a complete season. We know he hasn't, don't. Yeah,
not in the last I think fiveyears or so. Something was strepped
up. So he's declining too,and still has a contract that runs through
twenty thirty. Right ouch, meight six six nine eight seven two five

(24:41):

Which of these other Laker legends hadtheir jersey retired by the organization last year?
Michael Cooper, Byron Scott, BobMcAdoo, George Miken or George Michael

(26:55):
He did. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was close. It was
closed, but Ronnie got it.Well, wasn't that close? Because I
could easily say Ronnie got it?Oh yeah, whatever, Okay. Pat
Riley owns the highest playoff winning percentageby a Laker head coach at six eighty

out of the next question if youdon't get this, you know that,
right, Yes, okay, he'scalled for a challenge. It is not
a Booths review. Sam has thrownthe challenge flag. There's a lot riding
on this because if Sam doesn't atit, he's eliminated. He cannot win

(28:03):
the Dodger tickets. But he's goingfor it, and I guess you have
to respect that, no matter howill advised. It may be here,
we go give he's stalling to giveyou time to withdraw that challenge? Is
what Fred is doing right now? What is west Head? And answers,

(28:23):
Yeah, we kind of want tohave the full name, but we would
west Head would work. Yeah, yeah, we would take it. I
probably wouldn't. I'm not I'm sayingthat. It was not a question of
you saying west Head, Yes,I will withdraw the flag. It's too
late for that. No, it'snot here. We go, ok.
Paul West had Frank Vogel or FrankOcean. No that we said West had

(28:52):
about a second and a half afterRodney said that, Sam, all right,
what's the score? Said it twice? So now did he withdraw his
challenge or he didn't withdraw it?No, that's the reason why we played
it. Okay, he used thischallenge. Now he's locked out. You're
locked out? What? Yeah, that's why we had to replay. Can

(29:14):
we play that withdrawal of the challenge? Can we play that? No?
We can't. We gotta keep moving. Sam. Well, now, well,
now Sam scrowed he can't win,Hey challenge? Didn't you tell him
not to challenge? Yeah, he'sdecided. That's a challenge. I tried
to stall to get a chance towithdraw it, and I've ever heard him
officially withdraw. I thought I didsay I will draw my challenge. He

(29:38):
did withdraw the challenge. Okay, let's go. Why the hell did I
even replay? Totally confused? Allright, what's the challenge ahead? If
he would through the challenge, thenhe's still alive. Continue playing, Okay,
get it together, Sam, jeez, what do you want? I'm
a little bit su populated. Yeah, what do you mean for Rodney?
I didn't Why because you didn't continuethe game or stop the game? You

(30:04):
let it fester? Well, no, I'm just turned it moving or go
to the challenge? All right? You let the greatness been. Let's keep
it moving so we can get toDave on time. I don't want all
right, here we go. KareemAbdul Jabbar is a franchise leader in career
block shots while we're in a Lakeruniform, who was second in team history
and career block shots while playing forthe Lakers. Well, Chamberlain, Kobe
Bryant, Shaquille O'Neil or Elmore SmithO'Neil, and Ronnie wins it. So

(30:33):
that's it, Ronnie, you win. Congratulations, the game is over.
Sorry Sam, Sam, that wasa tough one for you. Man.
Who's the answer on that one?It was Shaquille O'Neil. Sam's not paying
attention. You get it together,Sam, and I appreciate it, all
right. He's still not paying attention. All right, all right, good
bye, good bye Sam. Allright, good try, good try.

(30:53):
There goes Sam at Gary Hills. He gave it his best shot today but
came up short. So now wehave to give the tickets away. Rodney
eight six six nine eight seven twofive seventy. Okay, what caller number
number seven, number seven? Youwill win two tickets to see the Dodgers

(31:15):
and the Diamondbacks Tuesday at the stadium. Paul Now plus David Vasse joins us
from Fenway Park. Next, Let'sgo. Today's afternoon Delight is Little boot
Thing by Paul Russell. Once aftera snippet of the song went byro on
TikTok, the full track was officiallyreleased on streaming platforms over the weekend.

(31:37):
The song samples the Emotions hit singleThe Best of My Love, and in
a statement, Russell wrote, Ithink what makes the song special is the
fact that so many of us areready to just forget about whatever is happening
around us and enjoy the good thingsin life, not just thinking back to
good times in the past, butcreating new ones in the present day again.

whatever you want to do. FantasySprings Resort, Casino and Spa just
outside of Palm Springs. Okay,Rodney, we talked about USC earlier,
and of course there are thirty anda half point favorite. The overunder is

(33:52):
at sixty six. As you lookat the upcoming season, this will be
goodbye to the Pack twelve. It'sgoing to be one of the most anticipated
USC football seasons, I would sayin ten years. I mean, this
is a pretty big deal. Asthey get going against San Jose State,
and when you go in with thatkind of pressure, how does it affect

(34:15):
you? You know you, Ithink it can affect you in different ways,
But I think when you have itdepends on what type of team you
have and who are your leaders onyour team. Right last year, with
Lincoln Riley coming in, I youknow, I think people were excited.
They knew that the program was goingto go in the right direction because of

(34:37):
this track record and what he didat Oklahoma. And then and then we
find out we get Caleb Williams isgonna come here too. That got people
even more excited, but you stillnever knew. And as a season went,
they kept getting better and better andmore exciting and more exciting and ended
up doing what they did last yearand came coming a game away in the

(34:59):
in the Pack twelve championship game topossibly making the playoffs. This year is
different because they come in with atarget on their back. Everybody expects them
to be in the in the playoffhunt and play for a national title,
possibly got the Raining Heisman Trophy winner, all those things that come at you
this season like this. So Ithink the biggest thing they've got going for

(35:20):
him in terms of pressure is,yes, there there's pressure, but they've
got a guy running the show atquarterback that is as poised as I've seen
a college quarterback in recent memory. So with that and with Lincoln Riley as
the head coach, they'll be ableto handle all the shots that they're gonna
get taken. They're gonna gonna betaken at him, and be able to

(35:42):
handle it from from a veteran standpoint, because these guys are so mature,
especially on the offensive side of theball. So for argument's sake, let's
say they run the table. Wehaven't started yet, but we're gonna sit
here and say they run the table, all right, and they make some
noise in the playoff, the nationalplayoff, let's say that too. I
don't know if they win it ornot, but they make some noise.
Okay, it's pine the sky. We're forecasting here. We're way out ahead

(36:04):
of it. That's what happens. We know it's Caleb Williams last year at
USC. Could this be Lincoln Riley'slast year at USC as well. Could
the NFL come knocking, Oh,the NFL is gonna come knocking, for
sure. I think I don't knowif it's his last year, though,
I think what in the landscape ofcollege football, Uh, the USC moving

(36:29):
to the to the Big Ten.It's new challenges, obviously, But I
think Lincoln Riley came in knowing thatthat was gonna be a possibility, and
that's something I think he welcomed. So I don't see him leaving after two
years. You know, USC isone of those places that is uniquely situated
that it could be both right,it could be one of those places that

(36:51):
you could you could live and buildhere for years it come. You know,
he's got his you know, he'sgot his foothold on this city right
now. In the program they're gonnaat players year in and year out.
He's in one year built back thecredibility and the power of the program,
and it's a place where he couldhave the run of the city and the

(37:12):
west for years and years and yearsto come. You know, whereas in
you make that jump to the NFL, you better get done in two years
otherwise they're gonna run you out oftown. Matt Rule. You know,
great career at Baylor, you know, kept rising, his stock kept rising,
and only was there at Baylor fora few years. But then you

(37:34):
know, NFL kept calling, camecalling, went to Carolina. He's out.
He's out in two years, threeyears in Carolina. It's not easy.
We saw, you know, NathanielHackett from Denver one year he's out
as head coach. You know, you don't have that leeway in the NFL
as you do in college football, and a lot of times in the NFL,
you know you you don't. Youhave less control over players your season,

(38:04):
whereas in college you kind of moldand mold the players into your philosophy,
whereas in the pros you got tomold to the players around you.
So it's it's a difficult thing,you know. And I'm not him.
He's still a young guy, andI think a lot of guys feel like
that's the pinnacle is getting to theNFL. I'm not so sure it is
with him because USC is such acoveted job that he could have for the

(38:29):
next fifteen twenty years. Yeah,I mean, they certainly paid him,
like he's not going anywhere. Yeah, they took care of him with a
house, Like he's not going anywhere. And I guess you have to weigh
at some point in time what's reallyimportant to you. If he builds the
program as he seems to be,and let's say he does stick around and
goes to the Big ten and theyperform well there, don't forget next year,

(38:51):
I'll have a new quarterback. Butif they performed well there, he
basically owns the city. He's JohnMcKay He's Peak Carross, Slowdown, Slowdown.
He's not John McKay. Well,I'm saying he would. He would
own the city. That's what I'msaying. I'm not saying he's as successful
as John McKay. Well, whatI'm saying is he'd owned the city.
I mean he would be the guy. He would trump either NFL coach if

(39:16):
USC performs well in that regard, you know, and Sean McVay is a
pretty big deal, but I thinkLincoln Riley would be the guy if in
fact USC plays well. So there'sthings he's got away here, There's things
he's got to consider and just whathis priorities are. But again, first,
first things first, they'll start againstSan Jose State tomorrow. My advice,

(39:38):
take the over, Take the over, take the over. They gonna
score, and they're gonna score,They gonna you know, it's an interesting
game. And a lot of peoplesay, well are you over? He
was State cupcakes. This is gonnabe a statement game. It should be
a statement game for USC, youknow, and not how much for Caleb

(40:02):
Williams and the offense, but astatement game for the defense. We all
know that us he's gonna score, like we talked about, but can that
defense stop people? And because there'sa pressure on that defense because people look
at San Jose State, is thatinferior team, and man, they'd better
be able to dominate San Jose Statebecause they can't dominate San Jose State.

(40:23):
They're not gonna be able to dominateNotre Dame. And then all of a
sudden they go to the Big Ten. How are they going to hold up
defensively against those schools if they can'tdominate against Samon San Jose State. So
all those questions, all that pressureis on the defense. Tomorrow, this
afternoon, the Dodgers take on theBoston Red Sox. The first pitch at
four ten, listen to the gamein HD and the free iHeart Radio.

(40:44):
After keyword, say five seventy LASports and celebrate Hispanic heritage in Los Angeles.
