(00:00):
Let's get into basketball Assaultier Adam Austlin, host of a Clipper countdown the Halftime
Show in the postgame Joe Show, joins us Adam, how are you today
not dressed as appropriately as you?I'm in my shorts here, I got
some span dex on. I'm readyto go with the Jim Fred right after
this, so let's hurry up.I don't yeah, I don't know if
we need to know about the spandexOkaylaker coaching search JJ redd jj Reddick,

(00:25):
depending on who you talk to.Yeah, he's a viable candidate. No,
maybe other players in the locker roomwouldn't like it. Where is the
coaching search with JJ Reddick? Imean everything that I've read, I go
off of what Joban Booja says.He says he's still the front runner.
It's not by a lot at thispoint. And the Lakers still have a
lot of interviews to do, andthey got to do their due diligence,

(00:46):
and they'll talk with Sam Cassell andChris Quinn right behind Eric Spolstra his right
hand man. I'm sure they're gonnatalk with David Adelman, who's been right
next to Mike Malone. For awhile. My guy Mike and Nori I
talked about him two weeks ago withyou guys, now all of a sudden,
he's the hot name court side coachingthings up right now with Chris Finch

(01:06):
hurt for the Minnesota Timberwolves. ButI don't hate the JJ Reddick idea just
because a guy doesn't have coaching experience. They said the same thing about Steve
Kerr. I was all for itat the time. He had executive experience
with the Phoenix Suns, but hehad never been a head coach before.
And Mark Jackson obviously did good thingskind of setting the foundation with the Golden

(01:26):
State Warriors, but he took themto a different level with the offense that
he implemented there for the Splash Brothers. I do think young innovators, guys
who are gonna be thinking outside thebox a little bit, having that ingenuity.
I like seeing more mouldable, experimentaltype of coaches, even in a

(01:46):
team like the Lakers. I understandit, it's a championship or bus situation
there every season, but if Lebronwants him, and you know that means
Lebron's gonna end up being basically theassistant coach. They're gonna be talking just
like they do on the podcast allthe time about plays and game plans and
approaches. But maybe you surround himwith some more veteran guys. Maybe you

(02:07):
put assistant coaches next to JJ Reddickto butchress him, as a VTB would
say, to support him and justmake sure he's insulated with guys with much
more experience while he can be thatlittle mad scientist out there. And you
talk about guys respecting him, butlook, if Lebron James has his respect,
what more do you need? Wouldn'teverybody else fall in line if Lebron,

(02:28):
if this is his hand pick guy, aren't they gonna get behind JJ
Reddick as well? I wouldn't worrythat much about it, Fred, Yeah,
people make too much of it,don't they. Don't they ad him?
I mean, first of all, like you said, they're gonna surround
him, He's gonna get surrounded bysome veteran coaches. It's phil handy state,
Oh I think so? You know, so there's gonna be veteran coaches
around him. And this notion thateverybody wants to get up in arms about

(02:51):
Lebron and he's gonna be too closeto Lebron. Lebron's gonna have a say
in this, and then tell mewhat superstar doesn't. Yeah, I mean
that's the sense it's. And therewere superstars, and we started labeling superstars.
They all have a say and whatis happening on the field. We
can go back to Magic Johnson, right, you guy got rid of a
coach. I mean, come on. I mean even when back when I

(03:14):
played, there were plays. IfI didn't like it, we were running
them on Sunday. We would havemeetings about this, and so it's like,
okay, what do you think aboutthis? No, No, I
don't like it. I don't likethat guy catching it. I don't like
the way Steve Smith runs that route. Let's get him on something different.
That play would be out. Sothis notion and everybody's all up in arms
that, oh my, Lebron's gonnabe talking to JJ too much, and

(03:36):
it's gonna be coming from Lebron. It's the way it is and the way
it's been for a long time.Yeah. I mean, it's a superstar
driven league for a reason. Youhave to align yourself with those players.
You have to make sure you're puttingthem in the best position to succeed and
accentuating their talents. That's what you'regonna see with JJ Redick. If he's
the head coach next to Lebron James, he's gonna try to get the best

(03:57):
out of his best guys. Look, Darvin Ham, I don't want to
belabor it too much, but hecouldn't figure out the best five guys to
put on the floor. I don'tthink JJ Reddick's gonna have a problem figuring
that out. That was the biggestissue for the Lakers all of last season,
so many different lineup changes. Ifeel like he's got a pretty good
handle on who the best guys arebecause most of the fans watching knew at

(04:17):
that time that rwy Hotchimore should beplaying and Austin Reeves should obviously be starting
out there. You're not asking alot out of them. The talent is
there, whether or not they're gonnabe available enough. Because they're an older
squad, they have injury prone players. We understand that, but you can't
predict injuries. You don't know what'sgonna happen there. How about just put
yourself in the best position to succeedwhen you do have everybody available to you

(04:40):
out there on the court and theXES and O stuff. If you listen
to JJ Reddick old Man in thethree podcasts for years, he seems pretty
bright. He seems like he hasa very high basketball IQ acumen. This
guy, he's got a brilliant mindon him. So whether or not you
think that's good enough to overcome hislack of experience, well, there's two

(05:00):
different ways to look at it.He's young. I understand that part of
it. But to me, maybeI'm biased. I like the younger guys
who are very talented. I liketo put them in the hot seat because
look, it's gonna be a hotseat for anybody who's with the Los Angeles
Lakers, of course, because youhave Lebron James. But if he hand
picks the next head coach, ifit's that obvious, because he's signed off

(05:21):
on anyone, of course, hehad to sign off on Darbn Ham.
But this is his guy, thisis his friend. Well, you're a
little bit protected just by the factthat it's on Lebron if things don't go
well too and I've said this beforewith you guys, but for everyone talking
about whether or not this is agood enough job anymore being the Lakers head
coach, because you know it couldjust be a one year, two year

(05:42):
thing. Well that's also you're outwhen you're going for that next job.
Hey, everybody, it's it's arecycling center. With the Los Angeles Lakers.
It's a revolving door. Nobody makesit that long there. It's not
a reflection of me as a headcoach. It's the Los Angeles Lakers and
a franchise being dysfunctional with their headcoaching. SCE you right now, Adam.
You said that the talent is there, so you believe with the right

(06:05):
situation, with the right coach andthe dynamics of this team that they can
win or do they need to add, you know, a guy like a
Donovan Mitchell to this roster. Howclose are they really? I don't think
they're that far away. I thinkthey would have beaten the OKC Thunder in
the first round had that been theone to eight matchup, and they have

(06:26):
gotten the eighth seed like some peoplewanted them to tank and do I think
you're seeing it right now with OKseed down three games and two to the
Dallas Mavericks, where there is someinexperience they're affecting them. Is SGA just
not having a true second option thatyou can rely upon each and every night.
I think that was a good matchupfor the Lakers. I think they
would have taken them down. Look, if the Denver Nuggets go on to

(06:46):
win it all, meaning they haveto win Game seven on Sunday first against
Minnesota. If the Denver Nuggets winit all and go back to back,
well what's the shame in losing tothe back to back champions. That's the
position. The Lakers may have justbeen in the wrong place, wrong time
where they're taking on the best teamin the league. And yes it happened
because of a poor regular season. They should have never been in that position

(07:10):
to have to see them in thefirst round. But I think if you
get seventy games out of Lebron, out of Anthony Davis, you should be
a top five seed in the WesternConference if you optimize lineups and configure things
the right way, regardless of ifthey have that third star in Donovan Mitchell
or whoever they're able to bring inDamar Jurozan or somebody like that, because

(07:30):
they do have options, guys, they do have tradable pieces that you have
tradable contracts, and they have threefirst round picks that they can dangle,
So they're gonna make a move forsomebody because they're gonna lose D'Angelo Russell.
Most likely he's opting out. He'sgonna get paid somewhere else, and I
think he's probably overstayed his welcome inLos Angeles with the Lakers. In the
second time around, they're gonna haveto add somebody to help out. And

(07:55):
if look, if you can getone of these younger guys. This is
the same issue with the Clippers rightnow. You got to insulate older players
with youth and athleticism. If theycould somehow find a way to get Donovan
Mitchell, who does say he's happyin Cleveland right now, but you never
know that could change. JB.Bickerstaff might be available, by the way,
he's being evaluated a head coach therewho's done I think a pretty darn

(08:15):
good job, but they're looking intomaybe moving on from him. But if
you can get Donovan Mitchell or somebodythat's around twenty seven early prime years to
help out and just take some ofthe scoring burden off of Lebron James and
Anthony Davis. You're in business,You're looking good. So I don't think
there as far as some people haveseen them as, or just there's no

(08:37):
hope with Lebron James, which issomething I know you guys had Bill Plasky
coming up later. He said thatrecently. So there's two different sides of
this. But maybe it's PTSD becauseI've seen the Lakers land on their feet
so many times before when it seemedlike they were about to self destruct.
I mean, they were winning twentyfive games per season before Lebron James came
in and pretty much saved them fromall that dysfunction after Magic Johnson left and

(09:00):
they end up getting maybe the bestplayer ever out of it. Somehow,
it just seems like they always figuresomething out and maybe that next winfall for
them is finding the next brilliant headcoach and someone like JJ Reddick. Yeah,
I agree with Plaski, after all, I know you do. Fred,
I agree with it. Let metell you be careful what you wish
for. They were winning twenty fivegames per season the last five years before

(09:22):
Lebron James came in with Clutch sports. You guys remember doing two months of
radio talking about what a dumpster firethe Lakers organization wasn't after Magic Johnson said
I'm not gonna be here anymore.Fred don't remember. Yeah, I got
a long memory about how bad thingswere before Lebron James came in. So
I'm not saying it's been perfect. They won the Bubble Championship, and some

(09:45):
people diminished that like I just did. But I think overall they're in a
better place than they likely would havebeen given the trajectory they were on before
Lebron James came in. I'm notquestioning the Lebron business. I'm not.
I'm just saying, all right,if you're in business, how are you
going to construct the rest of theroster to give you the opportunity to win

(10:05):
it all? Adam, you haveLebron. Hey we're close. Well,
close doesn't matter, Close doesn't count. Well, you know, if they
hadn't played Denver, maybe they couldhave beat Okay, See, it doesn't
matter. You're either the best ofyou or not. You have Lebron James,
you have a d What can youdo to surround those guys with whatever
it takes for them to win. That's how I look at it. Well,

(10:26):
if they'd only played OKAC and they'dhave beat them, then then what
then they get beaten the next round. So you're saying there is shame in
being maybe the second best team inthe West. If wins it again and
the Lakers just lost to the defendingchamps once again, that should be looked
upon as a complete and utter failure. No, it should be looked upon

(10:46):
as you didn't have enough to beathim. And you have Lebron James and
every year he gets older. Nowphysically he's incredible, but he's going to
get older every year. You havehim. You've committed an awful lot of
money to him. That's where you'regoing here, that's where you're going.
You gotta win with him. Howdo you win with him? Well,
my answer to that, or myquestion is this, you got a better

(11:09):
alternative? I don't. What's yourwhat's your point? I don't. What's
your alternative that is better than LebronJames? I do so much smoke his
way. And I'm not saying Idon't want Lebron. I'm not saying that.
I'm saying because he's Lebron. Heeats up a lot of cap space.
He eats up a lot of money. Hey, superstar does okay you
Adam, every superstar does fine.Fine guys that you can surround him with

(11:33):
that get him, gets him towin it. How about it? How
about continue to develop some of thoseyoung guys that didn't take as much of
elite forward as we thought they weregoing to this season in Austin Reeves and
Chima. That's how you do it. You have to hit with some of
those young guys who are on cheaperdeals. That's what the Denver Nuggets have
been able to do. Peyton Watson, Watson with Christian Brown, they've been

(11:56):
contributors over the past couple of seasons. Now you have to find some guys
to help out your stars, youraging stars. In this case, it's
not ideal. You got like, you know, Aaron Gordon who takes a
little diminished role, like he's nothe's like you know, you know,
check his ego at the door andlook what he's doing for them. Fred.
You gotta find those guys. Andthat was a diamond in the rough

(12:18):
at the time. That's turning outto be one of the better trades since
I don't know, the Golden StateWarriors brought in Andrea Godala. He's a
perfect blue guy, and nobody thoughthe was gonna be this type of player
in his early days with the OrlandoMagic. You gotta have some vision,
you gotta see things nobody else does. Else any other team would have done
the same. Damn Thing's catch? What's up? Fred? What's that?

(12:43):
What's up? Fred? You ain'tsaying nothing now, mister big let me
say this. You don't have mein the grinder. And here's why,
because every damn person listening knows I'mright. That's that's why. Well that's
a real because they all know I'mright. They all know I'm right.
As the very convincing argument from FredRogan, YEA, I made my argument.

(13:05):
I don't have to re argue myargument argument exactly. Lebron James makes
too much money like every superstarred slot. Yeah, I'm not hearing any ideas
of how to get better for thisLakers team. I mean, you know,
at Adam, Adam, you're gonnado Bob Milwaukee. Fred, they
won a title and they can't getback there. You know what, huh

(13:28):
blow that up to get rid ofAnd it's all everybody but Denver sucks.
Everybody else sucks in the league. They're terrible. It's Denver, it's Minnesota,
and it's nobody maybe Boston. Well, let me say this, Denver
sucked last night, big time wildin Minnesota. Put it on them.
Good lord. Losing by forty five, that's humiliate, that's bad. Well

(13:50):
did you hear Jokic afterwards say itwas a great loss? I think he
meant epic loss is what he wastrying to go for there. But also,
don't most of us believe that they'restill gonna win in Game seven back
in Denver, even though they justlost by forty five. That's what's been
wild about this series. There's beenvery little carryover from game to game.
You see the first two games,Minnesota is that dominant, and then Denver

(14:11):
wins the next three against them. There's no rhyme or reason to it.
It's been a lot of blowouts inthese playoffs that we have seen where we
think two teams are evenly matched becausewell, they're headed to a game seven,
But some of the games have beenso lopsided. In mil Wonkee,
it's strange to watch. As goodas jokis wasn't that Game five dropping forty
on Rudy Gobert. He really struggledagainst Carl Anthony town Ol Boyd. Yeah

(14:33):
last night, and Adam, toyour point, there's no carryover. I
heard somebody making arguments about, ohuh, Minnesota would have been better off
if that game they won by twoand it was a close ballgame as opposed
to blowing them out. Because nowit's a wake up call to Denver because
they got blown out by forty somethingand now they go back to Game seven

(14:54):
at home with their eyes wide openas opposed to have been in a close
ballgame. No, sound like aFred argument, like you can pick and
choose how many points you want tobe defending champs by Come on, I'm
not gonna sitder Friday. Fred notdoing it, all right, Adam,
thank you, have a good weekend. Alright. I love you guys,
all right. Fred Ruggan Rodney Peteon five seventy l A Sports
