Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talker.
All Right, we're live at Dodger Stadium, and I'm here
with one of my favorite people. He was a starting
pitcher for the Dodgers. He has found his way in
the Twins bullpen, and that is the one and only
Brock Stewart. Great to have you back at Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's good to be back. I cannot believe I'm one
of your favorite people. I don't know what I did
to deserve that, but I'm honored.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Well, first and foremost, you may not be a starter,
you may be one of the best relievers in the
American League, but you still got that Jason Priestley, Brandon Walsh,
great hair going.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
It's always gonna be there, hopefully. I mean I got
the jeans both. I think both grandparents, both sets of grandparents,
you know, held their hair for a long time. So
uh yeah, I mean I guess I got that going
for me.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Is it great to see Dodger bench coach Danny Layman.
How many of the familiar faces do you still remember
from your days with the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, it's mostly staff. It's great to see Danny. It's
mostly staff. I think the only players are will Smith,
Munsey and like d May and.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Don't forget the big one. Yeah, who am I missing
the future Hall of Famer? Oh curse? Yeah yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You remember him, right, Yes, I remember him.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
He's still here. That's awesome to see him get three
thousand k's and still pitching. Well, I mean, that's really
cool to see. He's worked so hard and he's been,
you know, one of the best teammates I've had when
it comes to you know, just watching how he works
and kind of gaining some knowledge on and off the field.
He's the man, And yeah, thrilled to see him still
doing it.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
What do you remember the most about being a rookie
in the same clubhouse with Kershaw at the peak of
his powers.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, I just remember having my tail between my legs.
To be honest with you, I mean I didn't I
didn't know any of the guys, so I wasn't in
big league camp in twenty sixteen, and then I got
to the clubhouse and there's guys like Kersh, Adrian and Zalez,
Chase Utley. You know, A j ellis some old savvy veterans,
and I, you know, I'd never met any but so
I was scared for sure. But that's like what sticks
(02:03):
out most. But no, I just just the first class
treatment from everybody in the organization is what I This
is what really stuck out to me.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Brock Stewart now one of the best relievers in the
American League pitching for the Twins, not forgetting the little
people like Clayton Kershaw. As he returns to Los Angeles, Brock,
when you come back to LA and you're this guy,
one of the more successful relievers in the American League.
Who is Brox Stewart now compared to who he was
(02:30):
when he broke in with the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Oh man, I'd like to think. I think I'm the
same guy. Maybe opened up a little bit more, just
you know, more, you know, more footing in the big
leagues nowadays, so maybe more myself over here. But no,
I'd like to think I'm the same guy. I've always
tried to be respectable to my elders and treat everybody
with respect. So I hope that people think I'm the
(02:54):
same guy. I don't. I don't think I've changed too.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Much at all. But as a Pitcher, You found something
in a facility to make you the guy that you are?
What led you down that path?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Honestly, fate really. I this was COVID summer and I
had like a barbecue over at our house with some
friends all outside. We were sticking to the guidelines six
feet apart. It's okay, we got through that. We did.
We did. But yeah, a friend of a friend came
over and her boyfriend was named Ben Brewster, and Ben
(03:25):
Brewster is the co owner, co founder of Tred Athletics.
So we got to talking. I didn't know that going
in when he came over, but we got to talking,
and sure enough, he opened this place in Charlotte called
Tread Athletics and they're mostly online on Instagram, Twitter, et cetera.
But yeah, it's a baseball development specifically for pictures, you know,
get getting some vlo, getting stronger, faster, And yeah, I
(03:47):
got to working with them, and sure enough, it definitely
paid off.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
And you were injured going into it or were you
hurt coming out of it a little bit of both,
because that's the debate, right, You chase philosity and you're
putting yourself in a vulnerable situation.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, doubt. I mean, I think everybody gets that, but
in today's day in age, in baseball, you have to
throw hard if you want to have success, especially as
a right handed reliever. So yeah, I mean I didn't
feel I didn't have anything major going into it, but
you know, I got some VLO back pretty quickly in
a matter of like two months, and then sure enough
I blew out my elbow, so I had to recover
from that. But no, just really ever since I started
(04:25):
working with tread just got that routine, figured out what
I kind of need to do to feel strong, feel powerful,
and just throw hard again honestly off the mound. And
now that I have that in my back pocket, and
you know, the past three years, it's been pretty fun
seeing ninety six, ninety seven, ninety eight up there. So
just trying to take it one day at a time. Still,
I've been hurt a lot, so I take it, take
(04:47):
everything one day at a time.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Do you feel like you you appreciate things more now
because you've been at the bottom and now you're at
the top.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. I don't know about the bottom.
I mean I've obviously we're at the bottom.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Well, we're at a barbecue, trying to find some guy online.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, but I had already had a big league career.
I mean there's you know, there's people that never make
the big leagues. So I think the people that grind
and work really hard and never make the big leagues,
I think that's you know, that's tough.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
I didn't mean to offend you, no, no, no offense taking,
but yeah, man, I mean just I was we were
talking about the COVID summer the other day, and it
was twenty twenty, and everybody was talking about how weird
the season was, and I was like, well, guys, I
was on.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
My butt, sitting at home, not employed by anybody. So yeah,
I mean, those were tough times. I thought about hanging
them up, but I really didn't think about that too hard.
I always knew I wanted to come back and get
another shot, and thank goodness I did.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Hey, you never know, Key k Hernandez came back, a
few other Dodgers came full circle back to wearing this uniform.
You never know about Brock Stewart July thirty first, who's
only a few days away. We'll leave it right there, Brock.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Sounds good to appreciate you, man.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Oh man, great to see you out here. Great to
see the beard. It's looking great. The strength of Brocks
to word is real. Thanks a lot for the time.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Thank you, my man.
