Speaker 1 (00:00):
And an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talk.
All Right, the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft is happening
later this afternoon, and there's a reason why the Dodgers
will not have their third base coach, the best in baseball,
standing there today before the All Star break. That's because
(00:21):
he's a father today to Brady Ebel, who is expected
to be drafted very high in the amateur draft this
afternoon in Atlanta. And that is the one and only
Dino Ebel. Dino, thanks a lot for joining us, and
I know it's a proud day for you in many ways.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yes, thank you, David one for always having me on.
And yeah, it's a blessing for today for me to
be a part of Brady's journey and the hard work
he's put into, you know, to see where he gets drafted,
and hopefully it's where he wants to go and wants
to be whatever number they call upon him, and we'll
just move forward from then if that happens.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
You know, I don't know about you, but you've been
talking about Brady and just how you know where his
career was going in high school. Are are you having
a little shell shock that the draft is finally here, you.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Know, David, not really, I don't know. I'm relaxed, and
you know, I'm ready for the moment. I think of
all the hard work that you know, he's put into this.
I'm confident that one day you're going to see him
play at the major league level for a long time,
and him growing up in the game with him and
his brother, He's learned from the best he's been, you know,
with the big star names of the Angels and Dodgers.
(01:34):
And for me personally, I'm just maybe a little anxious,
but not nervous or I'm calm and uh, you know,
just looking forward to, you know, when his name is
being called.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
This has been a learning experience for both of you.
What have you thought about the draft process?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Well, Sevable, all the years I've been in the game,
I've always been on the field and still on the
field as a coach and developed the young players. And
I spent all the years in the minor league when
the guys that we drafted with, you know, the Angels
and Dodgers and the number one, two, three picks of
the organization all the way to the last pick. That
our job as coaches to develop and you know, get
(02:11):
them to the big league so they can help win
a World Series. And going through this process now on
the other side, you know, all the evaluations and all
the home and home interviews that scouts came to our
house over the winner and continue to do. So, it's
just amazing how much work behind the scenes takes place.
Now I'm finally seeing it on the other side, where
(02:32):
you know, as a coach, you get them when they
just show up at the park and you work them out. Now,
this process has been going on for over a year
and now it's real. It's time that all the hard
work that the scouts and scouting directors and all the
area scouts put all their homework together, and then they
go ahead and pick a guy they choose that's going
to someday represent them at the major league level. So yeah,
(02:54):
learning experience for me and Brady and Trey that's going
through this, my whole family. We're excited and the process
has been really really smooth.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, older kids always are the ones to kind of
lead the way for the younger siblings. So one day
Trey's going to go through this as well. I'm sure
that's going to make things easier for him.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Absolutely, and it's a learning experience for Trey. And uh,
you know, there was some home in you know, visits
from Aria scouts that even want to Tray involved in
it because they said they're going to be back next year.
And he's already got a seat wet. So yes, Troy's
excited for his brother and he's right now in Arizona
for the Perfect Game showcase. So yeah, it's gonna be Uh,
(03:36):
it's fun for Tray and you know, we'll just move
forward from there.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Dino Ebel is our guest. His son Brady is expected
to be a top pick. And you know, I'm just
curious about Brady's feelings. Do you know, a leading up
to this week, how has he felt? Have you sensed
any nerves or is he as calm as he always
has been.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
I think I think he's calm. He's got that natural,
that look that you don't know what he's thinking. He's
always I always tell him, you remind me of Mike Sooshia,
because you can be up ten or down ten and
Mike looks the same. And that's what Brady's done. He's
put a lot of work into this. He's been working
out all week, with his personal trainer, and then you know,
(04:15):
you see him on the field. He's hitting and taking
ground balls with us at the stadium. So yeah, he's prepared,
he's confident. He's in a good spot, David, as you
know that. You know he's got LSU and he's got
the draft. So I haven't since any nerves or any
shaking going on. Maybe this afternoon I'll see a little
bit of it, but I would say I'm grad he's
(04:36):
going to be Brady and have a nice calm.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Look, hey, Dino, over the years, you've told me that
Albert Poolholz has worked with Brady and Trey. Mark McGuire
told me he had the boys over his house. What's
it like for them to have not only major league players,
but guys that are Hall of Fame caliber taken interest
in them.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, very humbled and they're blessed and they know that,
and they they don't They take full, you know, advantage
of learning, listening and you know, keeping their mouths a
little bit quiet in the moments, and they ask good
questions and you got the best teaching the you know,
my sons and I just sit back, as you mentioned earlier,
as a dad, I just relax and you know, let
(05:17):
those guys take over. And I give the credit. And
you hear me say this all the time to the
players because they grew up in the game. They're around
the clubhouse, they're on the field. And when you got
superstars like Corey Seeger and Mookie Bess and Freddie Fraeman,
Albert Pools, Mike Trout talking to them about hitting, fielding,
what's dad going to do? So I just sit back
and watch and listen. And I learned too. So when
(05:40):
you got mcgil Rojas teaching Brady how to go this way,
that way, turning double play, I love it. That's that's
been their coaches. So that's how I go about it.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Hey, I saw Brady on MLB Network. They were interviewing
not just hand but the other guys on his team
that might be drafted today, and he said the biggest
advice he remembers from Mookie and Freddie was that they
told to enjoy high school, enjoy this process. Do you
feel like he's been able to enjoy all this?
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Absolutely? And he's taken that to his heart and he
had a you know, they had a through great junior
senior season for Brady, and they won the championship, as
you know, his junior year and this year they got
upset by a great team. But yeah, he just got
a smile on his face. He enjoyed the process going
into a senior year. He had his last season with
his brother Trey, who's entering his senior year now Corona.
(06:30):
So yeah, they they gave him great advice and I
saw that right away that he's enjoyed it and now
it's time to move on and start the journey.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Hey, the journey starts today as Brady Ebel will be
drafted out of Corona High School and he'll have his
dad and his mom right by his side. Do you know.
Thanks a lot for the time. Congratulations to you Brady
and certainly the entire Ebel family. You guys are the
reason why you have two really good young men that
(06:59):
are that have their feet connected to the ground. So
you guys should be very very proud as well. You
did a great job.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Well, thank you, David, and you know I appreciate that.
And it's it's a big day, so thank you for
having me on and we'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
I think Shannon's taking more of the credit.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
You can have all the credits. You could have all
the credit. There's no ego in my head. So if
mom wants to say I had the boys good, she
wants to say that she taught him how to hit.
Go for it. SHN. I'm all in.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Thanks, Dina. We'll see you when when the All Star
break is over at Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
All right, David, thank you
