And now your voice for Dodger Talkinglike that, David Vasse, we are
live at Dodgers Stadium after the Dodgerswin a thriller in eleven innings, beating
the Red Sox seven to six.Welcome the Dodger Talk. David Vasse here
with you until nine thirty, takingyour phone calls at eight sixty six nine
(00:24):
eight seven, two five seventy.I'm sure many of you are excited for
a couple of different reasons. A. The Dodgers one in eleven innings in
very exciting fashion. And b anytimein LA sports team beats Boston and beats
them that way, you gotta loveit. Come on, I mean,
(00:44):
I've lived here my entire life.I don't own one piece of green,
and there is no pink Boston hatin our house. I can guarantee you
that so very satisfying to be hereat Dodgers Stadium the last two nights to
watch the Dodgers break the hearts ofBeantown. Freddie Freeman with the go ahead
Grand Slam last night, and thentonight Keith a Hernandez, the former Red
(01:10):
Sox but belongs to the Dodgers, comes up big a game tying a home
run off former Dodger and all timesaves leader for the Dodger franchise Kennley Janssen,
and then comes up big to tiethe game with a base it in
the tenth inning. And Will Smith, who is not a man of many
(01:30):
words, but certainly is a manthat comes up big in clutch situations as
well, he did again in thebottom of the eleventh inning, and the
Dodgers beat Boston seven to six. Now, this was a seesaw game,
and I know the Dodgers won thisgame in eleven, but they had multiple
(01:53):
opportunities to win this game earlier inthe top in the bottom of the eighth
inning, Miguel ro Oha set theplate with the bases loaded and he's ahead
in the count two to Oh,you've got to be able to take that
pitch, And that wasn't excuse me, I'm kind of in the middle.
Swing tapper in front of the plate, check swing. That turned out to
(02:16):
be an inning ending double play. That was a golden opportunity the Dodgers were
not able to cash in on,and taking Justin Robleski out with one out
in the fifth inning was something thateverybody up in the press box was wondering,
and so much so I got atext that Adam Wainwright, who was
(02:38):
doing the game with Joe Davis onFox Today, said on the air when
they took Robleski out after four anda third scoreless innings, it felt like
quote Dave Roberts was managing with analgorithm. That are strong words from Adam
Wainwright, who is obviously one ofthe biggest competitors of his general and not
(03:00):
a guy that really was part ofthe analytic movement. I mean, I
feel like Adam Wainwright, the wayhe pitched spoke for itself and kind of
like Clayton Kershaw. He dictated whenhe was coming out of the game.
But that was interesting. And Iknow we're waiting to hear from Dave Roberts,
(03:21):
but he talked about taking Robleski outand we heard it during the Clubhouse
show. He just said that hedidn't think he could get through the next
four hitters, which means and everyteam has this now, the data,
the technology that shows when a pitcherstuff is starting to trend down. That's
when the sirens go off in anydugout, not just the Dodgers, the
(03:45):
Red Sox, any team that isup to speed with technology, and most
of them are these days. That'swhat they say, and that's what guys
like Adam Wainwright argue that managers andpitching coaches aren't why watching the game with
their eyes there beholden to the dataand the pregame script. I personally believe
(04:06):
Dave Roberts and the game planning fromthe research and development department for the Dodgers
had the plan of, look, you cannot let Robleski throw more than eighty
five pitches in this game tonight, which makes it very difficult for a manager
if you're trying to win that gameand you have a rookie making is what
(04:29):
third major league start, and you'retelling me he can only throw eighty five
pitches, Well, there's one ofthree things where you're going to pay the
tax. You're going to pay thetax, and maybe not winning the game,
especially after he put up a zero. Not sure if that was in
the script. Before the game numbertwo, a lot of people, including
myself, was wondering where was JoeKelly in the fifth inning? Why was
(04:53):
it Johann Ramirez again in the fifthinning. But the grouping of hitters,
the Dodgers look at but Johann Ramirez. I feel like Johann Ramirez is time
with the Dodgers. It's been alittle rocky here the last three outings.
But a bigger thing for the Dodgersis Evan Phillips. What is going on
(05:15):
with Evan Phillips because he has lookedvery human, not just going into the
break, not just tonight, butI feel like he's looked human since coming
off the il. Remember he misseda month with a hamstring issue, and
he has not looked like the EvanPhillips we have seen the last couple of
years. So that's concerning as well. But all in all, this was
(05:39):
about the Dodgers continuing to not giveup on this game, even after Tyler
O'Neil kind of gave them two gutpunches. Key a Hernandez, Andy Pajez,
ta Oscar Hernandez in the bottom ofthe tenth inning come up big,
and in the bottom of the ninthinning, Key a Hernandez with the game
tying home run off his former teammateKenley Janssen. So those are the cliff
(06:04):
notes to me, and I willsay this, what is Blake? What
is the game? Planning going onwith Blake trying and throwing cutters to left
handed hitters. Continuing to throw cuttersto left handed hitters. I mean he
got beat here by a known namefrom the Royals with a Grand Slam throwing
a cutter. He got beat inColorado by Jay Cave. Never heard of
(06:27):
him either before in Colorado Cutters. The way he got Yoshida out after Yoshida
came within inches of hitting another homerun off of Blake Tryning cutter was by
throwing him the sinker, throwing itdown, down, and in. If
you're gonna throw a cutter to aleft handed hitter, you better get it
in on their hands. And Ifeel like the game plan is out.
(06:49):
If you're a left handed hitter,Blake Tryning's throwing you a cutter, You're
not getting his money pitched the slider. The Dodgers have got to rethink all
of that. Ninety seven two fiveseventy is the phone number. Let's go
out to Brad and Mission Viejo. You're on Dodger Talk with David Vasse.
Oh hold on, Brad, letme switch my screener over. I was
(07:11):
doing off day shows during the AllStar break and as I was talking about
technology, technology got me. What'sup, Brad? You're on Dodger Talk.
Thanks for taking my call. Yeah, thanks for bringing up the pitching
change in the fifth inning. Myother question about the pitching is Banda when
he was pitching after he you know, got the out when he was pitching
(07:34):
to O'Neill. Do you think thatwas a good matchup when who was pitching
to O'Neill. Wasn't Banda pitching toO'Neill on the first home run he hit?
Yeah, but he has to facethree hitters there. So Dave Roberts
was thinking about the two lefties inDuran Endeavors and band has been pretty good
(07:55):
against righty's two, but bad pitchby Banda and O'Neill did not miss it.
Thanks for the phone call, Brad, appreciate it. Let's go out
to I Ray Craig out in LongBeach Sports Talk caller legend. I Ray,
what's up, Dave? Are youdoing? My friend? Hey?
Great to hear you. Good tobe heard, man, good to be
(08:18):
heard. Hey, listen, abig win today, great game. Boston
is one of the teams I reallycan't stand. And when I went to
Fenway and saw the Dodgers play theRed Sox back in a I don't know
was it twenty ye o six orsomething like that. They got beat three
out of four. So it's goodto see the Dodgers putting it to the
(08:39):
Red Sox right now. And I'lltell you what I'm with you, guys
taking that starting pitcher out of thegame. Man, that other cat came
in and just gave up ropes.I mean three catch out there. It
turned around. If it wasn't forout, man, it could have been
(09:00):
worse. He made a great catchout there, like Tarzan against the Morton
Salt sign in center field. Thatguy, if he played more regularly,
he'd be a gold Glove for sure. Man. That guy is just an
ace ace defender. But great gametoday. Man, it's always good to
talk to you, Dave. I'mglad to hear you on on the show.
(09:20):
And keep up the good work. Thanks, Craig, appreciate it.
Eight six six nine eight seven twofive seventy is the phone number. Dodgers
beat Boston tonight seven to six ineleven innings and going back to last night
when Freddie Freeman hit the go aheadGrand Slam after Alex kra walked Will Smith
in front of him. Freddie wasdoing his pregame workouts and Alex Cora was
(09:45):
out in front of the Red Soxdugout before today's game, and they obviously
know each other. Freddie and Alexhave a really good relationship. And Alex
shout it over to Freddie, youmade my twins I last night, and
Freddie responded with you would have mademe cry if I would have hit gotten
out. So that was a goodbanter, behind the scenes banter there between
(10:09):
Alex Cora and Freddie Freeman. Andwe will hear from Alex and Dave Roberts
later in the show because their formerteammate, Adrian Beltray is going to be
inducted into Cooperstown tomorrow morning. Soa very special day for Adrian Beltray.
This is where he got his startat nineteen years old, when then interim
(10:33):
GM Tommy Lesorda called up Adrian Beltrayfrom Double A San Antonio straight to the
big leagues to make his major leaguedebut in nineteen ninety eight. Obviously,
Beltray his final year with the Dodgersin two thousand and four, maybe his
greatest season, forty seven home runsthat year, by Adrian Beltray. So
(10:56):
we'll hear from Dave Roberts and AlexCora about their former teammate going into Cooperstown
tomorrow. Eight six six ninety seven, two five seventy is the phone number.
Speaking of Cooperstown, Clayton Kershaw oneday will be there as well.
And here he is, after havingmajor left shoulder surgery in December, is
(11:18):
going to make his season debut beforethe calendar turns to August. He had
said, July, July, July, and I was a little skeptical,
all right, Kersh, Yeah,July, Okay, probably August, maybe
September. This feels like it's addingto the legend of Clayton Kershaw, where
(11:41):
he is coming back at the timethe Dodgers need him the most. And
isn't that the theme the narrative ofhis Dodger career when the Dodgers need him
most, whether it's on short restin the postseason, whether it's him going
an extra inning, whether it's himmaking a start knowing the bullpen needs the
(12:03):
rest. They always seem to leanon him when they need him the most.
And it feels like this again isone of those occurrences with all the
pitching injuries, especially to their rotation. The Dodgers need Clayton Kershaw and he
will be there for them on Thursdayafternoon against of all teams, the San
(12:26):
Francisco Giants one ten Thursday getaway agame here at Dodgers Stadium. Tickets are
available at Dodgers dot com. Youcan be here to witness Kershaw's twenty twenty
four season debut. And Tyler Glassnowis coming back on Wednesday night. So
glass Now Kershaw to close out thehomestand let's go out to Angelo and Ota
(12:52):
Mesa. How you doing Angelo?Where's Ota Mesa? Have no idea?
That's that's right next to the Orderof Clan California and Mexico. It sounds
like it because your cell service stinks. But go ahead, okay, I'm
trying to put it on speaker. It might be better. Is that better?
(13:13):
No, go back to the oldway. Sounds like you're in an
area fifty two, fifty four andfifty six. Okay, yeah, thanks
for taking McCall. I'm with youwith that DV. I don't wear anything
green either, That's right. Itold my kids, even on Saint Patrick's
(13:33):
Day. I don't care if youget pinched a million times. No Green,
I'm with you, bro. Yeah, that just felt so good to
hear that on the radio, Bigio. Getting that button down. Yeah,
and being able to execute the smallball is very very essential and anytime in
baseball, but you have a slugginglineup, but being able to put down
(13:56):
the butt and execute little things isvery important. Hey, Angelo, isn't
that what's been missing? Even intoday's game? It felt like the Dodger
role players need to be more roleplayers. They're not Freddie Freeman, they're
not show hailed Tani, they're notMookie Betts, they're not Will Smith.
Be role players. Know who youare and play that role. I feel
(14:22):
like that's been missing lately from theDodgers. Know who you are. I'm
in agreement with you on that one. And uh to uh think about thinking
ahead on the trade deadline. Whynot try to get greedy with our major
league farm system, the Tampa BayRays and forage. Hey, the Arose
(14:46):
Arena is on the trade market. He is going to be traded, Angelo,
The Braves have interest, the Dodgershave interest. He definitely would be
a much needed presence, not onlywith what he could do on the field.
But his swag and his edge andhis cockiness. The Dodgers are too
(15:07):
nice of a team right now. That's how I felt at the end of
last year. They are too nice. They need some of Randio rose Arena
or Tommy fam or player X tobring a little bit more nastiness to this
team. Yes, yeah, becausewe're gonna take that to be anybody that
we meet up in the playoffs. No matter what team we meet up against,
(15:30):
they're gonna come after him. Soto be able to have guys that
have that strong confidence and swag isvery important, all right, Angelo,
thanks a lot for the phone call. Be safe out there on the state
border. Eight sixty six nine eightyseven two five seventy is the phone number.
And a guy that has that andwhen he's going right and when his
head is clear is Keith A Hernandeztoday celebrating ten years of service time in
(15:56):
Major League Baseball. That's a hugeaccomplishment and milestone for any player. And
you heard it after the game.He was in the right frame of mind
to deliver the way keyk Hernandez deliversusually in October, but October came early
today against his former team. Hereis Keik moments after the final out when
(16:18):
he scored the winning run. KeyK, what a game for you?
Late, Always ready, always clutch. Yeah, obviously not starting the game.
You gotta be ready for, uh, whenever your name gets called upun
and my case is whenever left hecomes in to face a couple of lefties.
Uh, it was really really hardto see that first of bat.
But then you know, the shadowswent away, and there's no secret with
(16:41):
what Kenley's gonna try and do toyou. And uh, you know he
gave he gave me a good firstpace of hit. I swung through it,
and then uh made a good baserespect too, and then I sha,
you know, stay on top ofthe ball and uh, you know,
put the ball in play, anduh I happened to catch the ball
out front. And then after that, uh, the third of bat,
it was you know a lot ofa lot of self talk, just to
(17:03):
stay stay in the at bat, stay confident, you know, uh,
telling myself there's no better, nobodybetter in that situation. And uh,
you know, I'm just happy thatI came through. I haven't been able
to come through for the team thatmuch, especially here at Dodger Stadium and
Uh, definitely a great one.It feels like you had a lot of
clarity. Your mind was pretty cleartoday. Yeah, you know, it's
a pretty special day obviously. It'sit's hard to feel like it's a special
(17:27):
game when you're playing regular season games. And uh, you know, my
my I got my whole family intown, my wife and and my my
parents and my sisters. Uh theywe had a great morning. Uh you
know, kind of appreciating what thisthis whole journey's been about. And I'm
just really thankful that that I'm backhere and that uh you know, it's
(17:48):
it's it's crazy how the world works. But uh, you know, to
be able to celebrate ten years ofservice time at Dodger Stadium playing against the
Red Sox, to the other teamthat I played the most time, uh
my career, it's a it's apretty special one. And to be able
to come through with the team twicelike that, it's a start to point
towards Hey, we know that.Keyk Hernandez really well, thanks for stopping
and congratulations, Thank you, Dave. Keyk Hernandez a big game for the
(18:11):
Dodgers, tying the game twice andthen scoring the winning run on a Will
Smith base it in the bottom ofthe eleventh inning to give the Dodgers the
seven to six victory in eleven inningseight six, six, nine, eight,
seven, two five seventy is thephone number. We're with you until
nine thirty tonight. Jose Moda isgoing to check in at the top of
(18:34):
the hour. Kershaw coming back onThursday? Did that surprise you? Did
that exceed your expectations? And areyou with me? When the Dodgers seem
to need Kershaw the most? Heseems to be here even when he's coming
off shoulder surgery which he had inDecember. Remarkable that he's been able to
(18:56):
really do this when not without havingany setback to this point in time.
And he pitched in Oklahoma City whatwas it the day before yesterday and only
four innings, so I mean herehe is ready to go on Thursday.
And Kershaw was saying after his startin Oklahoma City, he doesn't want to
(19:17):
put the bullpen in a bad spotonly being able to throw seventy five to
eighty pitches. Have you seen whatthe Dodgers are aligning their starters to do.
That's a normal start these days forthe Dodgers. They took Justin Robleski
out after eighty three pitches, notgiving up a run through four and a
third inning, so Kershaw will fitright in eight six, six, nine,
(19:38):
eight, seven, two five seventy. Let's go out to James in
North Hollywood. You're on Dodger Talk. Hi, James, Hey, David,
I want to agree with you aboutwhat you said about Adam Wright.
Adam Winwright's commentary about Robleski. Didhe say that he did? He sure
did. I was listening to thegame and he said, in fact,
(20:00):
he's not doing the eye test,he's doing the analytics thing. Now.
I get that the Dodgers can't standto lose another starter, but glass Naw's
come back, Kershaw's coming back.I have to believe that Yaomoto will be
back before the end of the season. And pulling him early today Robleski,
(20:21):
that is definitely cost the Dodgers. And you know, you got to be
mindful of bullpen management. It's niceto have Kelly back, but you know,
we need all of them back, and I think that when we go
into the postseason. The biggest knockagainst robertson past has been bullpen management.
He's gotten better at that in youknow, previous years. But I want
(20:42):
to ask you something that you justsaid about Kyk about what his mind is
clear? What do you mean bythat? As the Dodgers insider, what
are you speaking to there? BecauseI'm I'm I'm really serious. He gets
me. He gets frustrated very easilywhen he's not performing. He gets from
frustrated when he's not getting more opportunitiesto play. And the Dodgers gave him
(21:04):
a great opportunity to play every daywhen Munsey went down. They basically gave
him the opportunity to start at thirdbase, and he just wasn't able to
produce. And sometimes he gets inhis own way, and once he resets,
like it seems like he has duringthe All Star break, that's when
we get the key. K Hernandezyou saw today, Now I saw something
(21:26):
there, David. He said thathe's doing like he's working with like a
mind coach or something, and hedoes this thing where in between pitches sometimes
he'll stare. He'll hold his batout in front of him, stare at
it and take a deep breath. Now, I used to see our own
Jock Peterson do that and still dothat. I'm wondering if they're seeing the
(21:48):
same guy. Do we like thisguy? Do we think that that kind
of coaching is you get that deepinto it, James. That's their own
personal issues, and if it works, it works. If they want to
divulge that information on their own,I'll definitely share it with you. But
I would assume that the time thatJack Peterson reset his career in twenty seventeen
(22:08):
September of twenty seventeen and what KEYKis doing now may not be the same
guy because there's been a little bitthere's a different mental health coach on the
Dodgers from twenty seventeen to twenty twentyfour. Hey, you keep your head
clear too, James. Thanks alot for the phone call. Thank you,
David, appreciate it. All right. You can let me know who
(22:30):
your therapist is, and I'll letyou know who Keyk's is. Daniels Jewelers
is the official sponsor of the Triparound the Diamond. Stop by any Daniel's
location and say a home run foryour free team bracelet and fifty dollars gift
card toward any purchase of ninety ninedollars or more. Daniels Jewelers owned the
Dream. Yeah, we mentioned JoeKelly, the King of Rancho Kuckamonga,
(22:52):
actually made an appearance in a gamesince what single demio. He's only pitched
in sixteen games this year, fifteenbefore he went on the IL. So
it was good to see Joe getin the game in the sixth inning and
put up a zero there. Hebrings edge, as you know as well.
Key k Hernandez brings edge. ClaytonKershaw brings edge, and the Dodgers
(23:17):
maybe need to get a little nastyhere down the stretch. We're gonna take
a time out here on Dodger Talk. When we continue, Jose Moto will
check in. Also, we'll giveyou an update on Max Munsey as much
as he will divulge. And we'llhear from Alex Cora and Dave Roberts about
their former teammate Adrian Beltra going intothe Hall of Fame. Dodgers come from
(23:40):
behind multiple times tonight to beat theRed Sox seven to six in eleven innings
on a five to seventy LA Sports. Dodger Talk is available on AM five
seventy LA sports dot Com had onthe iHeartRadio app Back to more Talk with
Dodger insider David Basse too o pittswy base had Dodgers win, Dodgers win,
(24:08):
Dodgers win in eleven in eggs,Will Smith comes up with his sixth
career walk off him and the Dodgerswinted an extras seven to six. Will
Smith and the Dodgers had the whitethe red sox on the ropes as Greg
(24:30):
Weissert was in a no win situationright there with no margin for er.
Alex Korra brings in the five maninfield with one out in the bottom of
the eleventh inning and uh walk Shohotani in front of Will Smith. Smith
got a head in the count earlytwo oh, and Weisert needed to throw
(24:51):
a strike. He did and willSmith did not miss it to score Keithy
Hernandez from third base to give theDodgers the seven to six win in eleven
innings. We'll get to your phonecalls in a moment. We'll hear from
Will Smith, but first we wantto check in with the man that was
on the call with Tim never tonight, the one and only Jose Moda.
(25:12):
It's time to go around the hornwith Jose Mota. All right, Jose
Moto. What a wild game tonight, one of the most entertaining games of
the season. What stood out toyou the most about tonight's game the grit.
The Dodgers offense had not shown thistype of fight in a long time,
(25:34):
and perhaps we haven't seen a displaylike this on the offensive side since
maybe the Milwaukee series at best.So I was very happy to see guys
that got into a game. Alittle bit later, Kika does a fantastic
job against that bullpen, you know, and our starter, you know,
Jess Robleski has a lot of guts. Man, he loves that fastball.
(25:56):
He threw it very well all over. He was able to keep guys at
bay with his fastball and pitch backwards. But you know, quick, Hernandez,
I think we know very well,David is a key piece in this
whole operation. Okay, it's anoperation where Kik is a big part of
it. And hopefully we'll see nowwith a clearer mind a kick, hernand
is going to go out there andproduce. But certainly I'll say, grit
(26:18):
is what really comes out to mindfor me right now today, Key k
Hernandez, Let's face it, Joseis a big part of what the Dodgers
envisioned for the season. They tradedManuel Margo almost with two weeks to go
before opening Day, just so theycould sign Key k Hernandez. And this
was the best game he has hadall season long. Yes, it is.
(26:40):
I'm glad for him too, becauseyou know, I talked to Alex
Cory yesterday for a while, whohad him over there in Boston. Hayes,
he has known kick it for along time back in Puerto Rico,
and he goes. He is soquick sometimes that he just doesn't realize that
he has to just slow everything down. But I'm glad that, you know,
things are catching up with him onat least on the mental side,
with the he puts his work. There's no doubt about it. He's a
(27:02):
tremendous defensive player. But I thinkfor Kik, it too is he knows
these moments okay, and he doesnot make any moment too big. It
doesn't matter who's on my own,how hard he throws, low he throws.
He just knows that he has comethrough before. He wants to do
it for a long time, andit's important for all the lead. The
one thing that I wish would happen. I think you know, we saw
this happen earlier. Well, monthlywent down. It's like waiting for Kiker
(27:25):
to be the guy to say,you know what, you know, sitting
me down. And I hope thatit comes down to that time again where
he's such a presence, where he'spushing to play, but he's doing it
by the way he's performing and nothingelse. Because when he plays, there's
a difference maker. And let meput it this way better, when he
plays well, it's such a differencemaker, no doubt. Jose Mota is
joining us after the Dodgers defeat theRed Sox in eleven innings seven to six.
(27:49):
All right, Jose Moda, I'llask you the same question I've been
getting, what is going on withEvan Phillips because he does not look like
the Evan Phillips we saw last year. Well, first of all, resources
are not there because location, tome, has not been the same.
I don't think as a matter ofhim losing anything on that fastball. Perhaps
perhaps on the breaking ball, heis not getting the bite plus you know,
(28:15):
a little tilt that he needs, not breaking ball, to throw it
over whenever he wants to. Andon top of that, when we started
getting hit, your confidence goes down, so that it's a combination of the
things. But his stuff is amatter of location and command. I mean,
as hard as the guys throw nowadays, command is so important because guys
see more and more of the samevelocities and the same breaks. And the
Dodgers need him, they need it. But right now he's not pitching the
(28:37):
highest confidence with the ball leaves, you know, his hand. He's not
seeing that that feeling of what you'renot gonna do anything with his baseball,
So they need they need to gethim straight out. I mean, you
heard his comments after what happened inDetroit, you know, with Golden Teeth,
and it was a matter of saying, I maybe need to go out
there and approach it a different way. Well, that means that perhaps the
patterns getting too repetitive and guys arefringing. Because right now, he to
(29:02):
me and I've talked to so manyguys in the opposition's side, he's not
very uncomfortable at that is he is. When he is done, he's to
become very uncomfortable again and maybe getguys up the other side of the play
and the lefties go out there anduse both sides of the player effectively.
Again, Yeah, that makes sense, Hose, And especially when you talk
about his confidence. That seems tobe so fragile for every player, but
(29:23):
you could see the confidence is notthe same for Evan Phillipson. Maybe part
of the reason why Dave Roberts wentto Daniel Hudson last night against the Red
Sox, even though there were alot of lefties coming up. It's part
of it too. Obviously production performanceold matters, But I think Dave Roberts
psyche managers around the big leagues alsounderstand that there's a heartbeat and you know
(29:45):
each one of these players and thetimes you have to present to them the
best scenario where you think they're goingto respond well and not bury them if
it doesn't go well. You don'twant them to bury themselves, which is
one thing that you know prevails throughoutbaseball. When things don't go right,
you gotta go out there and havesome options. That's number one. If
you have options, it becomes waybetter. We have death, It all
becomes better. But you care somuch about the human being, and then
(30:08):
you want to see this human beinggo out there and straining things out,
and they need him to be goodbecause obviously, who wouldn't like to add
another arm out of the bullpen.I think the Dodgers do need that for
the playoff run. But he becomesa guy that came bathroom and close the
game four you as he did acouple of years ago with the six or
seventh inn All right, Jose motivebefore I'll let you go. We got
the news after the game from DaveRoberts confirming what a lot of us thought
(30:32):
was going to happen. Clayton Kershaw, on five days rest is going to
make his season debut Thursday afternoon againstthe Giants. Are you surprised it's coming
this soon? Yes? I am. I am surprised that it's coming this
soon because what we're hearing was aboutKersh, not about the month of July,
that's fine, but about him goingmore than four innings, perhaps in
(30:56):
his rehabs. You know where theDodger situation is right now. Kersh addressed
it well last night or so thepress conference when he talked about that he
doesn't want to go out here andbe a nuisance to the bullpen, but
if he feels strong enough and knowingthat he's he had, you know,
once more setback and he feels prettystrong. Then Kursha's kersh Man. And
there's some guys where you go,well, if he's going to be pitching
(31:18):
and these of those bullets, wheredo you want him to use him?
And right now is a perfect situationfor the Dodgers where they're at in terms
of the rotation, and to havea guy like that come in and sack
and at least give you five.He always wokeme that with open arms for
future Hall of Famer. All right, Jose, thanks a lot for stopping
by after calling eleven innings tonight withTim Neverett. We'll see you out at
the ballpark tomorrow for Sunday Night Baseball. I have a great one. Tim
(31:41):
never carried me, so I'm quitearrested right now. Okay, Jose,
I don't know about that, butI love hearing you guys. Thanks a
lot. There, he goes JoseModa, who is filling in for Rick
Munday. All is well with Rickjust taking his usual week off after the
All Star break, and he'll rejointhe Dodgers in Houston after this homestand closes
(32:04):
out with four games against the Giants. It will be Tyler Glass now on
Wednesday night. Clayton Kershaw making hisseason debut on Thursday afternoon, and before
then and now we will have probablyRiver Ryan making his major league debut Monday
or Tuesday night against the San FranciscoGiants. Eight six six nine eight seven
(32:30):
two five seventy is the phone number. We also have some news now from
Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic. Heis confirming a report that the Dodgers have
signed Nick Anderson, right handed relieverNick Anderson to a minor league contract.
He was designated for assignment by theKansas City Royals last week. The Dodgers
(32:52):
have signed the thirty three year oldright handed reliever, and he is going
to get big league action after theydo their work whatever they do to try
to get pictures on the right trackin the minor leagues and Camelback ranch.
And you may recognize that name,Nick Anderson. He was the relief pitcher
(33:15):
that Kevin Cash brought in after hetook Blake Snell out of Game six of
the twenty twenty World Series. NickAnderson was phenomenal all postseason, but Kevin
Cash ran him into the ground andhe had nothing left, and the Dodgers
said thank you very much when NickAnderson came into the game and Blake Snell
(33:37):
went to the dugout back in twentytwenty, but Nick Anderson reportedly has signed
a minor league contract with the Dodgers, so we'll see whether or not they
can have some sort of renaissance tohis career. Want to get to Will
Smith. He came up with thebig hit in the bottom of the eleventh
inning to give the Dodgers the win. Here was Will in the press conference
(33:59):
room moments ago. Yeah, itwas a lot of back and forth.
You know, homers, clutch hits, had all of it. It was,
uh, you know, funny gameto be a part of. Uh,
you know, I wish we wouldhave probably close the deal a little
bit earlier in the game, butuh, you know, we grinded through
it and pulled out to win.How much the value is that they have
(34:20):
these kind of windows yesterday and todaytuk it out of the break. Yeah,
it was tough, you know, final week going in the break,
so uh take the break, reset, get healthy, you know, just
reset and come back at two winsagainst the goodball club. Is is big,
big, for us going forward. So yeah, back at its marrow,
(34:45):
try to get a third one ina row, one run in the
first four and twelve runs after. How much the shadows lay for that?
Uh yeah, I mean, anytimeyou're dealing with shadows, it's tough.
Uh, you know it was.It was kind of weird for me.
There was shadows for a couple ofmy bats. One was pretty tough,
the other wasn't. So it justkind of depends on you know, armingle,
(35:06):
whatever whatever reason may be. Butyou know, we're big leaders.
We deal with that quite a bit, so we know how to deal with
it. And then justin uh,you know it, So what guys do?
No shadows in the bottom of theeleventh inning, when Will Smith walk
the Dodgers off with a seven tosix win in eleven and the Dodgers maintain
a seven game lead in the divisionover the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers eight
(35:30):
games ahead of third place San Diego, while the Red Sox, losing the
first two games out of the AllStar Break, all of a sudden,
find themselves tied with the Kansas CityRoyals for the final wildcard spot in the
American League. Eight six six nineseven two five seventy is the phone number.
(35:50):
Let's go out to Newport Beach,Conway. Thanks for being patient,
Dave Bassey. Good to hear fromyou, man. It's been about ten
years since I called you, andI think even Skippert Kennedy was still on
back then. And I congratulated onall you've accomplished since. Buddy, Thank
you, appreciate it. Great game, you deserve it, and a great
(36:12):
game. I was there, glad, I stayed for the whole thing.
I had a couple of questions foryou. But first Obleski the kid was
throwing heat and there's a kid inour section J one to fifty five walker
around trying to find a seat.He had a jersey on for Obleski and
he had paper tickets. I'm like, this guy's got to be family.
And I finally went up and askedand turned out it was his best friend
that flew out for the game.So that was kind of cool. They
were in our That shows how highup he is. He's back in our
(36:35):
you know, far away from homeplate section. That's as good as tickets
as he could get for his buddy. But question for you. The umpire
went out and talked to Oblessi andthen he talked to I forget who it
was in the ninth or tenth Also, do you know what they were talking
about there? I am warning aboutsomething. Well, I'm trying to remember
what exactly took place as far asthe ninth or tenth inning, what they
(36:57):
were talking about. I know earlyin the game last Diaz was not happy
with Dave Roberts sparking about the strikezone on ti Oscar Hernandez. There was
a pitch that was as far outsidefrom me to you Conway and ta Oscar's
first at bat. That's the onlyUH run in I can remember with Laz
Diaz and any one of the managersor pitchers. Well, in the third
(37:20):
he went out to the mound, just the umpire and spoke to Obuski for
a little while. But anyways, you know, obviously him pulling Obleski for
Ramirez. Back to last Sunday,I wish Roberts let him have that clean
eight and going to the All StarBreak with some confidence. Instead eleven have
two nights in a row with awalk off. But I'm wondering. I
guess that was probably matchups that hewas doing, and UH which was obviously
(37:45):
a mistake and before you add tothat, but thank you much. All
right, Conway, thanks for thephone call. Loyal listener to Petros and
Money obviously eight six six seven twofive seventy is the phone number. Wanted
to give you an update on MaxMounsey. I know he was on a
podcast that he appears on every sooften or every week, I'm not sure,
(38:07):
but it felt like after he madehis appearance and said that his body
hasn't cooperated the way he would likeit to, there was a complete panic
on the streets of Los Angeles,or at least on social media. And
just talking to Max the last coupleof days, his spirits are high,
(38:28):
and he told me he has nothad any setbacks and he is not going
to divulge too many details because hedoesn't want to put himself in a corner
and if things don't work out ata certain time frame that he has and
the Dodgers have, he doesn't wantto have what happened over kind of a
(38:50):
false start yesterday or the day before. So he said things are moving forward,
things are not moving backwards. Buthe did not want to give me
many more details than that, andI could just tell you, Max wears
his emotions on his sleeves. Soif things were not going well, Max
Munsey wouldn't be smiling and feeling good. And certainly that's a relief because the
(39:17):
Dodgers are trying to plug a fewdifferent holes here. As we get closer
to the July thirtieth trade deadline,it feels like the Dodgers are looking for
an everyday outfielder. That's been reportedby Ken Rosenthal, And there's no secret
the Dodgers are looking for a frontend starter, whether it be Garrett Crochet,
Tarrek Scoubale, Chris Bassett. I'veheard his name as well. Jack
(39:42):
Flaherty's name is out there. He'shaving a great year in Detroit. So
those are the names, and Iput it out there. And look,
it's easy for me to spend MarkWalter and Todd Bowley's money. But if
you wanted Trek scuulball tomorrow, allyou have to do is tell the Tigers
we will take Hobby biaz and theeighty three million dollars remaining on his contract.
(40:07):
Sound familiar, Yeah, the Dodgersdid that back in twenty twelve when
Mark Walter bought the team and theywanted Adrian Gonzalez and pulled off that big
trade with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett, and Nick Punto coming
back. Well, the Dodgers didn'tcare about Carl Crawford, didn't really care
(40:28):
about Josh Beckett. I'm not gonnasay they didn't care about Nick Punto,
but they wanted Adrian Gonzalez and toget him they had to take back the
bad contract of Carl Crawford. Samesituation here. If you want trek Schouble
and you don't want to give upthe farm, you take back Hobvey Bias's
(40:49):
eighty three million dollars. And look, Hovey Bias is a world champion.
He won the World Series with theCubs in sixteen. I'm not saying he's
that same player, and I knowhe has his warts, but you know,
if you want trek Scouble, youcan make things really enticing for the
Tigers by saying, we'll take thatmoney and you give us trek Scuble for
(41:12):
the next two years and the stretchrun eight six six ninety seven two five
seventy is the phone number. Whydon't you marinate on that and get back
to me. Tomorrow. In themeantime, Bobby Miller made his first start
for Oklahoma City tonight since being sentdown. He went five scoreless innings,
had four strikeouts and four walks. And Bobby certainly needs needed to regain his
(41:37):
confidence and work things out, andit feels like he's on the road to
doing that. I firmly believe BobbyMiller will be back in the big leagues
this season and certainly definitely contribute herein the Big leagues at some point in
time before October tomorrow. Adrian Beltray, he had his bumps in the road
(41:57):
before he became this Hall of Fame. He was not the clean defender that
we all know him to be now. I remember when he first got called
up in ninety eight. He'd makeamazing defensive plays, but his throws would
make Eric Carros go gray. Andcertainly he learned how to harness all of
(42:20):
that energy and become the Hall ofFamer that he is going to officially become
tomorrow. Adrian Beltray is going intothe Hall of Fame with the most hits
of any third baseman, over thirtyone hundred hits in his Hall of Fame
career. And it all started herewith the Dodgers, Tommy Lasorda calling him
up in nineteen ninety eight as theinterim GM, not from TRIPAA but from
(42:45):
Double A. San Antonio and DaveRoberts and Alex Cora were teammates with Beltray.
Alex Cora actually made his major leaguedebut the same season that Beltray made
it with the Dodgers and nineteen ninetyeight. They were teammates from ninety eight
to two thousand and four. Andhere is Alex Cora on Adrian Beltrade,
(43:07):
the Dodger. I didn't see itin the beginning, but you know,
after his last season here, hewent to Seattle, right, wasn't great.
Then he came to Boston and somethingclicked there, right, I think
the spotlight, you know, wasshining on him, and then he put
(43:28):
a great season. Obviously, itdidn't work out business wise, and I
know there's a lot of people inthe organization in the city that regret that.
But then in Texas he became theleader that he is, right and
just the way he goes about hisbusiness if you look at his career,
and this is something I keep talkingto people about. Rafie Devers. Right
(43:52):
when Beltray was here, in ninetyeight ninety nine. Whatever, the thing
that he had was upside offensively andhe was posting. He posts right.
He played same thing with Raffi.Defensively, Belly became one of the best
defenders ever at third base, butearly on it wasn't great. I think
he made like twenty nine errors. He averaged like twenty five hours his first
(44:15):
three seasons, just like Raffi, right, like erratic, making bad decisions,
and he decided to find structure inhis defensive work. I do believe
that we help him out. Youknow, his stories of myself and Robin
probably one of the best defensive infieldersin the history of the Dodgers. And
(44:38):
there was this sense of pride, you know, like not in a bad
way, because sometimes we confuse pridewith being selfish. With Belly, it
was pride about posting every day, playing hard every day, winning every day,
and being a Dodger the right way. And I mean, the guy's
(45:00):
amazing. I was joking with MikeFiori today this morning. He looks better
than what he looked when he gotcalled up in nineteen ninety eight. He
looks younger and stronger. I don'tknow how that happens, and I'm very
proud of him. We learn alot from him. I know he learned
a lot about from the people aroundhim, from Mary Carraz to Sean Gren
(45:22):
who I think was the one thatgave him the keys to unlock the offensive
potential because they started playing games inVP right the opposite field Homers. Yeah,
and there was a lot of moneyinvolved too, he and Luduca and
Greeney, but I think it helpedhim to become the hitter that he became,
and I'm very proud of him.Man. That's Alex Cora, former
(45:45):
teammates with Adrian Beltray. Both mencame up through the Dodger organization. Alex
was a little bit older, acollege player, was in Triple A when
he got called up by the Dodgersin nineteen ninety eight. Adrian Beltray came
straight from Double A as a teenager. And obviously those Dodger teams from ninety
eight to two thousand and four especiallyhave a tight bond. And Dave Roberts
(46:09):
became teammates with Adrian Beltray and AlexCora in two thousand and two. And
here's what the Dodger manager had tosay about his former teammate going into the
Hall of Fame. Man, there'sfirst off, yeah, I'm just so
excited for Adrian and his family.Quite the accomplishment, no brainer, first
(46:30):
ballot Hall of Famer. My firstyear was with him in two thousand and
two, and he was a guythat just loved to play the game baseball,
loved to compete, came in fresh, positive every day. Probably the
best defender at third base that I'veever seen. I remember in two thousand
(46:50):
and four he was basically playing onone leg and ended up hitting a bunch
of homers and playing gold Glove defenseand obviously had a tremendous career. You
know, one of my favorite peopleand favorite teammates of all time. And
I wish I could be there atthe induction, but I'll be watching,
and it's it's really cool now forme to now start to see people get
(47:13):
into the Hall of Fame that Iplayed with, and so that's pretty special
to me. All Right. Thatwas really special to talk to Dave Roberts
and Alex Cora about their former teammateAdrian Beltray going into the Hall of Fame
tomorrow with what Todd Helton and JoeMauer and Jim Leland. That is the
class of twenty twenty four. Andit was great to see Dave Roberts and
(47:37):
Alex Cora visiting before today's game aswell, two former teammates, and man,
that was a rough day in twothousand and four, I was in
San Diego with the Dodgers on thattrade deadline when that team was shell shocked
when Paul D. Podesta traded PaulaDuca and Dave Roberts and Gira Momota to
(48:00):
Dave to the Red Sox. Thoseguys to the Marlins, and that broke
up a very close knit team andthey would go on to win the first
playoff game for the Dodgers since Gamefive of the eighty eight World Series.
But I remember that day in SanDiego. There were a lot of tears
because those guys were close and theystill found a way to go all the
(48:22):
way to the postseason, beat theCardinals in one game, with Jose Lima
winning that game and then unfortunately fallingeventually to Saint Louis that year. Tomorrow,
James Paxton will be on the moundagainst the Red Sox, the team
he pitched for last year. JamesPaxton at Dodger Stadium this season is three
(48:43):
to zero with an ERA of twosixty seven in seven starts, so he's
a much better pitcher here at DodgersStadium. He's going up against Cutter Crawford,
who is six and seven with anERA at three zero four. Morongo
Casino Dodgers on Deck begins at threeo'clock, first pitch at four eight on
Sunday Night Baseball. Thanks to callingyou back at our Burbank studios, Thanks
(49:06):
to Dwayne McDonald out here at DodgerStadium, and thanks to you for listening.
Loved having Dodger Stadium electric tonight.Forty eight thousand, one hundred and
twenty nine stuck around for extra inningheroics. Keike Hernandez, Will Smith all
delivered along with Andy paz Teoscar Hernandezto help beat the Dodgers or help beat
(49:29):
the Red Sox seven to six ineleven innings. We will talk to you
tomorrow. Have a great rest ofyour Saturday. See it
