Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this gene is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
This team is really becoming a family.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
Let's not play one on Tom. Let's wind it.

This is world champion, Dodger world championing for a.

Speaker 5 (00:21):
Small soft time. They get a people what they want
to die too in a row two is special. I'm like, yeah,
it's not a headache.

Speaker 7 (00:28):
One of a con.

Speaker 5 (00:30):
This ball's gone. You ready to go?

Speaker 8 (00:32):
Sure?

Speaker 6 (00:33):
Hell old time to grab your phone to get in

two five seven and.

Speaker 8 (00:40):
Go to the show.

Speaker 6 (00:41):
And now your host of Dodger Talk, David Basse.

Speaker 7 (00:47):
We are live at Dodgers Stadium after the Dodgers defeat
the Twins tonight and snap their three game losing streak
with a five to two victory.

Speaker 5 (00:57):
Welcome the Dodger Talk.

Speaker 7 (00:58):
David Vass with you until eleven thirty tonight at eight
six six nine eighty seven two five seventy.

Speaker 5 (01:06):
We have phone lines open.

Speaker 7 (01:07):
We'll check in with Jose Mota next hour and also
we'll get into some mind numbing trade talk. But before
we do all that, let's unpack a couple of things
before we get into the Tanner Scott injury.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
It's incredible.

Speaker 7 (01:24):
Even Freddy Freeman said this during the All Star Game
at Media Day that Will Smith is the most underrated player,
at least in the National League. Hardly anybody talks about
how good he is. And he's one of, if not
the best catcher in Major League Baseball. It's either him

(01:45):
or Cal Rawley. Those are the two best catchers certainly,
hitting wise, in Major League Baseball. And tonight Will Smith
hits two home runs, but he's not even the headline story.
James Outman makes the game saving catch, robbing Carlrea of
what would have been a game tying three run home
run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Instead,

(02:09):
it's the end of the game, and also the injury
to Tanner Scott overshadows what Will Smith did. Tonight, calls
a nine inning game, catches Shoho Tani and Dustin May,
and hits two home runs to lead the way to
a five to two win for the Dodgers. And James Outman,

(02:29):
I mean James Outman give him a lot of credit
because he has not got a lot of playing time,
but he was ready to play defense after sitting the
majority of the game. And give Dave Roberts a lot
of credit for managing and bringing in a better defensive
outfielder for Teoscar Hernandez, sliding Paez to right field, having

(02:52):
Outman play center field, and keeping Confordo who's been solid,
and left outman for the second time in the last
five games, going back to the last game before the
All Star break, makes a game saving catch. Remember in
San Francisco, the final game of that series, right before
the All Star Break, James Outman made a game saving

(03:16):
catch on a liner by Rafael Devers in San Francisco,
and Rick Monday and Steven Nelson brought that up at
the end of the game. I completely forgot about it.
It was felt like a lifetime ago, but it was
only five games ago. And tonight, you know, Outman after
the game made it seem like, ah, maybe it was going.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
Over, maybe it grazes the top of the wall.

Speaker 7 (03:40):
No, if you look at the replay, it was going
to clear the center field wall. And give the Dodgers
a lot of credit for having outman in the game.
Give the Dodgers a lot of credit, Dave Roberts and
Dino Ebol teaming up to have no doubles, to have
out men playing deeper than usual. I was standing right

(04:03):
next to the Dodger dugout when I heard Dino Ebels
start whistling to the outfielders and signaling no doubles. And
Autman even said it made it possible to make that
type of catch. He believes he would have caught it anyway.
But when you're playing right on the warning track and
have to go to the wall, it certainly makes life

(04:23):
a lot easier. So give those two guys a lot
of credit. Because without Will Smith, without James Outman making
that catch, well, the Dodgers are going to extra innings,
that's for sure. Eight six six nine, eight seven two
five seventy is the phone number before the celebration of
Will Smith is over. Let's head downstairs right now to

(04:44):
hear from the best catcher in the National League on
sports and at LA.

Speaker 9 (04:50):
Well, we've got two pitches in the air for today.
Uh yeah, something's felling good. You don't think it'll be
consistent to keeping into spot. I want to go out there,
you know, stick my approach, and yeah, good things are.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Happening well because you're just what was like navigating with
Show and then with Dustin through their lineup, but was
kind of keeping them off balance. Yeah, I mean to.

Speaker 9 (05:11):
Show what's going out there. Uh, you know, if you
got clipped first batter of the game, but is able
to go you know, horreless the rest of it with
three innings. Yeah, he made it great tonight. You know,
he's comanding the ball got out a couple of jams.
You know, I had both Eaters going sliders really good tonight,
was getting ahead of guys, So that was, you know,
really positive. That's a really good sign for him. You know,

(05:32):
just looking to start some momentum for teammate.

Speaker 10 (05:36):
Talk about one to keep you fresh overly the course
of the season.

Speaker 9 (05:38):
Do you feel like you're in a better spot physically
than maybe we're the last couple of years going into
the second half. Yeah, I mean definitely healthy, you know,
no injuries right now or anything, which is good.

Speaker 6 (05:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (05:49):
I mean I still feel like I'm playing a decent amount.
Definitely want to be in there every day. But yeah,
they're managing that. Uh but uh, yeah, I feel good.
Dave said the other day.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
The kind of show, hey trying to will the team
to a win. These team, we.

Speaker 10 (06:04):
Have a little bit of a different attitude the batfoit
teamed a little more forceful tonight.

Speaker 9 (06:11):
I think everybody's trying to will win right now, you know,
the rough scretch. I gotta win the day. Back out
to man track another one.

Speaker 7 (06:19):
All right, there's Will Smith after the Dodgers beat the
Twins tonight five to two and he hits two home runs.
I'm wondering what he saw from Tanner Scott in the
eighth inning and the ninth inning. Dave Roberts said after
the game, you heard from him in the clubhouse show
that Tanner Scott felt something on the second to last
pitch in his left forearm.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Said it was a stinging sensation.

Speaker 7 (06:44):
And the Dodgers are going to have an MRI taking
of Scott's left elbow, left forearm tomorrow afternoon, and we'll
see where that leaves it. But certainly not a great sign,
especially when I'm standing right next to the Dodger dugout
and you got guys like Dustin May and Clayton Kershaw
screaming at Dave Roberts that he's hurt he's hurt. They

(07:05):
saw it on the last pitch that he too threw
to Ryan Jeffers, and that's when Dave went out there.
And obviously Scott did not look like himself in that
ninth inning. I'm not sure whether or not it was
the second to last pitch or the last pitch, but
he didn't look like himself in that ninth inning from
the very first pitch he threw.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
Maybe even in the eighth inning.

Speaker 7 (07:26):
And Tommy Edmund deserves a lot of credit because he
made a great catch for the final out of the
eighth inning with the runners at the corners and two
outs and Tanner Scott coming into face. Harrison Bader throws
a fastball right down the middle of the plate that
Bader smoked, and Tommy Edmund made a great catch at
the hot corner.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Our runs definitely in.

Speaker 7 (07:47):
If Edmund doesn't make that play, then all of a sudden,
you got two on with two out and Byron Buxton,
the best and hottest hitter the Twins have coming to
the plate, so that it would not have been a
good thing for the Dodgers. But luckily Edmund was able
to make that play in the eighth inning and certainly. Uh,
you know, James Outman making that catch in the ninth

(08:09):
inning saved the day for the Dodgers. Eight six six
nine seven two five seventy is the phone number.

Speaker 5 (08:15):
I have my thoughts on where the Dodgers.

Speaker 7 (08:18):
Turn, or where they were going to turn even before
this injury, but now there are maybe a couple of
other places they may need to turn with this injury
to Tanner Scott. Let's go out to Lou who is
at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Lou, you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Hey Dave, great to talk to you.

Speaker 8 (08:36):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, I came into town to get the World Series ring,
to close that loop. And you know, what else do
you say about Will Smith?

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Dave?

Speaker 2 (08:44):
I mean, everybody's talking about him from an offensive point
of view, obviously that that that makes sense. But it's
been great to see him develop as a backstop. I
think I think I counted five balls out of the
dirt that he protected, and it was just great to
see him come full circle. He actually went out there

(09:05):
during a little bit May's who was having a battle
with a particular player, don't remember who was, but he
goes out there talks to May, settles him down a
little bit. It's just great to see the maturation of
Will Smith.

Speaker 7 (09:17):
Yeah, he's really taking more command behind the plate and
certainly is one of those strong, silent type of leaders.
And he plays through a lot of pain, that's for sure,
especially at that position.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
Thanks for the phone call, Lou.

Speaker 7 (09:30):
And by the way, before I let you go, which
player's name was on your replica ring tonight?

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (09:37):
I was.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
I got Rojas's rings. So just fortunate to get the
ring and be in the house and appreciate you, Dave.
Thanks for all you do for us.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
Thanks for the phone call, Lou, appreciate it. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (09:47):
I thought that was a great giveaway idea, the replica
World Series rings with players' names on it, Tiascar, Hernandez Kershaw, Rojas.
And look, if you didn't get the player that you
wanted tonight, I think it would have been cool for
you to maybe offer a trade of a ring with
the fan next to you. Let's go out to Rafa
who is at Dodgers Stadium tonight.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Hi, Rafa, you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Hey TV.

Speaker 10 (10:12):
It's good to hear from me again.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Brother.

Speaker 10 (10:13):
I just wanted to say a few things. Give us
some shouts to well deserving players, like the last caller
was giving Will Smith as props. I mean two home
runs to night and a few stays behind the backstop.
I mean, Will Smith's playing really excellent baseball. I want
to give a shout off to Tommy Edmund for that
snag yet at third base when I mean he looks
like he got up almost the foot off the ground

(10:33):
to snack that ball. It was personally my first time
watching Show Hate Pitch in person, And for those that
haven't gone up to the ballpark to see Show Hate Pitch,
whether you can do it at home or on the road,
please go do so. Just the fact that he's doing
both at the same time, just watching them pitch, so

(10:54):
I was like, there's no way this guy also hits,
you know, forty plus home runs every season, and sure
enough he gets two k in the first inning and
then goes goes yard dead center field to get a
two run home run, and all in the first inning.
It was just amazing to see in person.

Speaker 7 (11:09):
Honestly, Yeah, it feels like he took it personal that
he gave up that leadoff home run to Byron Buxton,
for sure, because the way he left the batter's box
after that monster shot. He kind of felt like, Okay,
I gave up one, but I'm taking back to now.
Kind of felt like he took it personal and upon himself.
And like Dave Roberts said a couple of days ago,

(11:31):
he's trying to will his team to a win, and
in baseball, it's a little tricky to do that because
if you try to do too much, it's not gonna
work out. But in that instance, certainly, it was great
to see him deliver.

Speaker 10 (11:45):
One hundred percent. And I wanted to ask you a
question of you. Obviously, a lot of a lot of
fans like the back on Tanner Scott. I'm not one
of those guys. It's hard to be a closer pitcher,
if you know, compared to anything else I want to
ask you. Obviously says that he got injured. But now,
given we don't know too much about the injury, I
saw rumors out there that we might go after Class

(12:07):
A from the Guardians. What do you think is the
good fit for us to go after in the trade market?
Is what guys are you liking for us trade for?

Speaker 7 (12:16):
Yeah, I'll let you know right now, but I know
I threw it out there a couple of weeks ago.
But I don't see a trade between the Dodgers and
Guardians happening. They're a really tough team to make a
trade with, especially at the deadline and class. You know,
he's good, he's having a down year, but he's under
team control for two more years. Are the Guardians really

(12:38):
going to trade a picture like that? I don't see it,
but maybe, but I just don't see it. A couple
of other guys, and thank you for the phone call, Rafa,
appreciate it. You know, there's a lot of other options
out there for the Dodgers to turn to as far
as realistic trade partners, and these Twins are one of them.

Speaker 5 (13:00):
It's gonna cost something, but.

Speaker 7 (13:02):
I would believe with the Twins being where they're at,
you know, four or five games under five hundred, five
games back in the last wildcard spot, with four or
five teams to leap frog, that they would be open
to listening about their closer, Joean Duran. I could see
them and the Dodgers actually having productive talks. They have

(13:24):
another really good reliever in the name of Griffin Jacks.
He may look at his ern and be like, ah,
three eighty three no, look a little deeper.

Speaker 5 (13:33):
His whip is one eighteen.

Speaker 7 (13:35):
He has sixty seven strikeouts and forty two in a
third innings. He's an Air Force guy, so you know
he can handle. La Griffin, Jacks Joan Duran are guys
that certainly would help the Dodgers. Guys on other teams.
David Bednard the Pirates. The Cardinals are sinking fast. Ryan Helsley,

(13:57):
who's a free agent at the end of the year.
Another free agent at the end of the year, old friend,
Kenley Jansen. The Angels are a middling five hundred team.
Ken Lee Jansen would be a rental. Kenley Jansen has
seventeen says with a one fifteen whip. He's been pretty

(14:17):
good for the Angels and obviously on a five hundred team,
has not been used a lot. Has only thrown thirty
four innings this year. I wouldn't rule out Kennley Jansen.
I know everybody believes the Angels would not trade with
the Dodgers. I don't know that to be true. I
don't has has anybody said that from the Angels. I

(14:38):
don't know that to be true. Wouldn't I would love
to have Kennley Jansen back, especially with how then the
back end of the bullpen is right now. Obviously the
Dodgers are counting on getting Blake Trennin back here in
the month of August. They're not ruling out the possibility
of Bruce Dargratol, But can you count on that. You
got to give yourself some coverage. So so ken Ley's

(15:00):
a guy that is going to be The Angels are
going to field a lot of calls for Kenley Jansen.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Dodgers were one of them.
And here's the home run shot. You want to hear
the home run shot Mason Miller of the A's. Nobody's
talking about Mason Miller again this year. It feels like

(15:23):
people got tired of talking about him last year. He's
not having as dominant of a season as he had
a year ago on the surface, but he has nineteen saves,
he has fifty seven strikeouts and thirty five and two
thirds innings. Just to put that in context, ken Ley
has thirty five strikeouts in thirty five innings. That would

(15:47):
be the home run swing for Andrew Friedman. And don't
the A's care about having their team ready to go?
In Las Vegas a couple of years from now. The
Dodgers have the pitching to trade and players to trade
to help them when they get to Vegas. Maybe a
Justin Robleski, maybe at Dustin May, maybe a Dulton Rushing,

(16:11):
maybe James Autman. The Twins definitely need a catcher. Christian
Vasquez has done after this year. They need a catcher.
They don't have any catching. So the Dodgers and Twins
actually match up on a trade. If the Dodgers would
be willing to trade Dalton Rushing, there's trades to be

(16:32):
made out there. And I will guarantee you that Andrew
Friedman is going to make significant improvements to this team
at the trade deadline. And we had a caller last
night said, I don't want the Dodgers getting more players
at the deadline.

Speaker 5 (16:46):
Really, why not? I really enjoy winning?

Speaker 7 (16:50):
I do, and I enjoy having the best players on
the Dodgers. It's been a long time coming since. You know,
I always felt the Dodgers should have in the Yankees,
and under this ownership, the Dodgers are the Yankees and
there should be no apologies. Eight six, nine eighty seven,
two five seventy is the phone number. What are your

(17:11):
thoughts on these Dodgers trades? And we're gonna take a
time out when we come back until July thirty. First,
I will tell you who should be the Dodger closer
with this injury to Tanner Scott. Eight sixty six nine
eighty seven two five seventy is the phone number. The
Dodgers beat the Twins tonight five to two on a

(17:32):
five to seventy LA Sports.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Peaks overs front left shoulder, ball in the red glove
in front of his letters.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
Oh one two Correa.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
It's a high fly ball to center field outman at
the wall.

Speaker 6 (18:04):
He jumps and he.

Speaker 5 (18:06):
Makes a catch.

Speaker 7 (18:07):
James Alvin with.

Speaker 6 (18:09):
A games saving at home run Robbin catch.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
GreatCall by Steven Nelson.

Speaker 7 (18:18):
He was alongside our guy Rick Monday, My number one
guy was back in the booth tonight. Great to have
Rick back from Vero Beach and the Dodgers beat the
Twins tonight five to two. What a catch by Tarzan
James Autman at the wall, robbing Carlos Correa of what
would have been a game tyme three run home run

(18:39):
off of Kirby Yates. Instead, the Dodgers walk away with
a win five to two over the Twins.

Speaker 5 (18:45):
Daniel S. Jewelers presents the home run forecast.

Speaker 7 (18:48):
Go to AM five seventy LA sports dot com use
the keyword home run for your chance to win a
fifty dollars Daniel Jeweler's gift card predicting the number of
home runs in the very next game. Daniel Stewelers owned
the dream you know yesterday after the Dodgers got swept
by the Brewers, we had a couple of not very
polite callers scream and even curse about how Dave Roberts

(19:12):
is a horrible manager. Is Dave Roberts really asleep at
the switch when he puts James Outman in center field
to make the Dodgers outfield defense better. Holding a five
to two lead, a five to one lead going to
the ninth inning, Dave Roberts certainly made the right decision there.
And Dave Roberts made the right decision changing the Dodgers'

(19:35):
batting order. He moved Mookie Bets to the leadoff spot
in hope of trying to ignite Mookie Bets, and so
far in the first two games we have seen a
much better version of Mookie.

Speaker 5 (19:47):
Bets at the plate.

Speaker 7 (19:49):
He leads off the first inning with the walk, Otani
hits a two run home run. In the seventh inning
with two outs, he doubles to give the Dodgers another
opportunity with Otani at the play eight Otani strikes out,
So check number two. Good move number three. Good move
Freddie Freeman, who is struggling hitting now only to ninety two.

(20:11):
Only to ninety two, but we all know Freddy's been
struggling after hitting close to three point fifty after the
month of May. He moves Freddy down to the fourth
spot and elevates his best hitter right now, Will Smith,
to the three spot.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
What does Will Smith do? Homers twice tonight? Number three?

Speaker 7 (20:31):
Really good move by Dave Roberts today alone, Is anybody
gonna give Dave Roberts any credit? I see eight phone
lines open, but yesterday a full board of calls calling
for Dave Roberts to be fired after winning his second

(20:51):
World Series with the Dodgers.

Speaker 5 (20:53):
Are you kidding me. People.

Speaker 7 (20:56):
If you're gonna do that and I'm taking names, I'm
keeping receipts. One of those not so pleasant callers even
started to curse on Twitter, where there are no rules.
It's a very dark place, of course, as you know,
so you would expect that on that platform. But really, tonight,
nobody's going to recognize what Dave Roberts did with the lineup,

(21:19):
and nobody's going to recognize that he brought out men
into the game in the ninth inning to make their
outfield defense better. I mean, if we're being fair, right,
are we being fair? I don't think you are. I
sound like Nicholas Tuturo, who is the biggest and most
outspoken Yankee fan. I ran into Nicholas Tuturo today as

(21:42):
I was waiting for my son to come out of
his baseball camp in the valley and he was sitting there,
Nicholas Tuturo, and I said, Hey, Nick Tuturo, I play
your Freddie Freeman meltdown on Instagram all the time on
Dodger Talk. If you listen to the show, you know
about this. Can anybody get Freddy freaking Freeman out?

Speaker 5 (22:05):
That's Nicholas to tourro one more time.

Speaker 7 (22:07):
Can anybody get Freddy freaking Freeman out?

Speaker 6 (22:11):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (22:12):
And I started to pick that scab about the World
Series last year. He is all like, what what's Boonie
doing bringing in Nesta Cortes.

Speaker 5 (22:20):
I mean, Freddy Freeman.

Speaker 7 (22:21):
You're gonna intentionally walk Mookie Betts for Freddy Freeman. Oh
I got him going again today. So love that, Love that,
oh man. Love seeing Nicholas to tour and he's wearing
his Yankee shirt, his Yankee hat. I was like, hey, yeah,
nypd Blue. Yeah, you're an actor, but you're better known
now as a as an outspoken Yankee fan. And you

(22:44):
can't believe when the Yankees pitched to Freddy Freeman. Eight
sixty six nine eight seven two five seventy is the
phone number?

Speaker 5 (22:52):
All right.

Speaker 7 (22:52):
I gave you some trade options, some trade targets, realistic
ones not unrealistic. And tomorrow on another station you'll hear
somebody say I'm hearing whispers. Yeah, you're hearing whispers because
you're listening to the show. That's what you're hearing whispers about.
Now until July thirty. First, I'll tell you who should

(23:14):
be the Dodger closer. No, not Alex Vesia. No, not
Kirby Yates. He's been victimized by the home run ball
way too many times. It's Ben Casparius. Ben Casparius should
be the Dodger closer starting tomorrow night.

Speaker 5 (23:32):
You challenge him.

Speaker 7 (23:33):
To be that guy. He's got the makeup, he's got
the stuff. His stuff plays up as a reliever. He's
the guy. Ben Casperris should be the Dodger closer until
they make a move on July thirty first, And even
if they make one or two moves to get a
right handed reliever, maybe Ben Casperius convinced them. You know what,

(23:55):
he should be the guy that is, the guy that
should be the to close games. And I know last
year when the Dodgers were searching for a closer in
the regular season, they mixed in match with Vessia and
some of their high leverage relievers. I'm cool with that.
But Ben Caspirius and Alex Vessia should be the two

(24:16):
headed monster at the back end of games for the
Dodgers until they make a trade for one of the
guys I mentioned Bednar Halsley, Duran Jansen, Mason Miller.

Speaker 5 (24:28):
There you go.

Speaker 7 (24:29):
Eight six six, seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers beat the Twins but lose Tanner Scott for an
unknown amount of time. M alright tomorrow on his left arm, Fullerton, Artie,
You're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 5 (24:43):
How you doing, Artie?

Speaker 11 (24:45):
Hey, Dave, I'm good man. Thanks for the great show
that you're putting on.

Speaker 5 (24:50):
Hey, I love it, I love it. I love this
time of year.

Speaker 11 (24:54):
It is a great time of year, and we got
a long season ahead of us, lot of games, and
as far as Dave Roberts goes, my friend, I challenge
any of these naysayers to manage a team that was
absolutely loaded with talent and most of them are in
the hospital. It has been a very, very difficult time

(25:17):
for Dave Roberts to manage the team that he doesn't have.
He's really done a good job with the players he's
brought in to put in and again, Outman's just one
of them. But my trade of the year would be,
I'd like to trade for a real batting coach.

Speaker 4 (25:39):
Well, I'm telling.

Speaker 11 (25:40):
You, my friend, I played baseball until I was fifty
five years old, with steel cleat's and hardball, and I
know loads.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
Hi Sunday Leagues right until you're fifty five.

Speaker 7 (25:56):
Yes, I know what, when the Dodger offense or any
offense goes south for a period of time, everybody points
to the hitting coaches. I'm not gonna do that because
I know how much time those two guys put in,
and I know that the Dodgers still have one of
the best top five offenses in Major League Baseball. So

(26:21):
I'm not gonna go after the hitting coaches.

Speaker 5 (26:23):
Sorry, Ardie.

Speaker 11 (26:26):
Let me let me just say two things, okay about
whoever's doing it the coaching for the hitters. Ta Oscar
is trying to pull every pitch that he's throwing. He
needs to keep his left shoulder in. He needs to
concentrate on hating the ball to left to right field,
not left field, because.

Speaker 7 (26:46):
He's don't you believe the Dodger hitting coaches are telling
him that. I mean, they can't be in the batter's
box for ta Oscar.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
Ta Oskar is.

Speaker 7 (26:54):
Doing what he did during a two or three week
stretch last year.

Speaker 5 (26:58):
Exactly what you're talking about.

Speaker 7 (26:59):
Are he's chasing sliders away from him and trying to
pull him. That was what he was doing for two
or three weeks until he started to lay off those pitches.
And until he begins doing that again, he is not
getting out of this slump. And I'm sure the Dodger

(27:19):
hitting coaches are trying to let him know that.

Speaker 11 (27:23):
Well, I would hope so. But there's another really great
player on our team that's having lots of trouble, and
that's Freddy. And I would say this to you, and
maybe you know this, maybe you don't, but Freddie spends
a lot of time moving the bat from where it

(27:43):
sits on his shoulder around to getting into the hitting zone.
He's needs to move his bat position so he's in
line with the hitting position. He's a very strong guy.
He's got great bat speed, he's got good timing, he's
got a good eye. Where here's dat hang behind his back,
he can't get it around quickly enough and keep it.

Speaker 7 (28:08):
That's where he starts, but that's not where it is
when he's getting ready to load. And Uh, I trust
Freddie Freeman. I trust his dad, who's his hitting coach,
who he spends a lot of time with. I trust them, marredy.
Uh It's worked out pretty well for a guy that's
going to the Hall of Fame. Thanks for the phone call. Appreciated.
I'm sure Freddie and the hitting coaches appreciate the tips

(28:29):
as well. Eight six six nine eight seven two five
seventy is the phone number. Look like Rick Monday always says,
when you're in a slump, everybody's a hitting coach. You
go to the supermarket and people are giving you tips
on how to get out of a slump. I understand that.
You know, that's another thing. When the Dodger offense is
going really well, the hitting coaches are geniuses. When it's

(28:53):
not going well for two or three weeks, stretched like
every offense has all of a sudden, they should be fired.
I'm not on board with that, because, like I said,
hitting coaches these days put in not just twelve hour days,
but I'm talking fourteen, sixteen hour days at least Aaron
Bates and Rob van Zoyak and the rest of their

(29:14):
staff down there.

Speaker 5 (29:15):
So I'm not I'm not inclined to go after them.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
Eight sixty six nine eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
Let's go out to Greg and Londale. You're on Dodger Talk.
How you doing, Greg?

Speaker 1 (29:27):
I'm doing pretty good. How are you tonight?

Speaker 7 (29:31):
I'm waiting for somebody to give Dave Roberts as much
credit as they blame him. And when things don't go right,
are you one of those guys?

Speaker 1 (29:39):
Yes, when the when the well tonight was one specific
instant was it was a stroke of managerial genius and
it saved the game. But you know, when the when
the season started, it looked like the Dodgers had the
twenty seven Yankees going to roll them out and just
you know, kill everybody.

Speaker 8 (29:58):
But you know what he's.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
Happened, That's the way had happened. Dave Roberts has managed
so good this year. The guy is at the top
of his game. And you know he can't make catches
or hit for the guys, but he's put people in
a lot of positions to be successful. And then he
plays a little strategy. Also, he's a good manager. Everybody
wants to you know, a bag on him, but they're

(30:22):
still you know, in first place. You know it's a
I watched the local.

Speaker 7 (30:29):
I mean, it goes without saying he's a good manager.
But he also has a great staff around him. Mark Pryor,
Danny Lahman, uh Dino Ebel, the third base coach is
the best in baseball. And you got Bob garn who
helps him run the game as well, is always in
his ear.

Speaker 5 (30:49):
So they have a really good staff.

Speaker 7 (30:51):
Chris Woodward at first base obviously in the hitting coaches.
So uh, he's got a good staff and they put
in a lot of work. Get these guys out here
and they're available for them to get better. Thanks for
the phone call, Greg, appreciate it. Eight six six nine
to eighty seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Freddie Freeman, by the way, got thrown out at the
play trying to score from second base on Harrison Bader

(31:15):
in the sixth inning for the final out of that inning.
And the Dodgers were able to hold on tonight five
to two with hitting four home runs. I mean, there's
no ways around this. The Dodgers are a slugging team.
When they outslug the opponent, they're usually going to win,
like they did tonight four home runs, including two from

(31:38):
Will Smith. Pa has homers in the seventh, Otani homers
in the first inning.

Speaker 5 (31:43):
And that's the way. That's the way this team is built.

Speaker 7 (31:46):
They're not a hit and run team, even though a
lot of managers believe that you don't have to have.

Speaker 5 (31:53):
Foot speed to be a running team.

Speaker 7 (31:55):
And the Dodgers last year were excellent at really good
base running, and that was the difference between them and
the Yankees, among other things, was how good they were
running the bases, taking the extra base. And they've got
to start ramping up to be that team again, because
it's the little things that help you win championships. And

(32:15):
in fact, they're not really little things. When you're in
the outfield to field a ball, make the right decision
where to throw, those are not little things. Those are
what is required at the major league level. Eight six,
six nine, eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
The Dodgers beat the Twins tonight five to two. And
speaking of Freddy, he was hit by a pitch and

(32:37):
walked directly towards the dugout in the sixth inning and
he was in the starting lineup today. So that was
a good thing for the Dodgers, not losing Freddy Freeman
because everybody was holding their breath that he was stoic
and walked directly to the dugout. So, I mean, that
was a really good thing that X rays were negative

(32:59):
and he was in the lineup today.

Speaker 5 (33:00):
Let's go out to Long Beach. Mike, you're on Dodger Talk.
How you doing, Mike?

Speaker 4 (33:05):
What's up, David? How's it calling Buddy?

Speaker 5 (33:08):
Great?

Speaker 4 (33:10):
First time calling here. I listened to the show all
the time. The first thing I want to say is
that that guy who says he goes to Sunday midsleegs,
who's telling Freddy that he can't hit.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
Is just.

Speaker 5 (33:22):
On Sunday League.

Speaker 4 (33:25):
Menage and I have in no way gonna tell Fuddy
that he's doesn't know what he's doing with his batswinger.
Where he's putting his bat is the wrong place.

Speaker 7 (33:34):
Almost as bad has been has taken him to the
Hall of Fame. You know, I I just don't get it.
But anyway, Mike, I agree with you. And who knows,
maybe Freddy's dad's listening and being like, you know what,
maybe I'll listen to that guy.

Speaker 4 (33:49):
Yeah, maybe maybe Dad's advice will actually again better. Freddy
knows what he's He's gonna be fine, We're gonna be fine.

Speaker 7 (33:56):
Stop putting down people, Mike. I'm tired of you putting
down people. What do you have have to say tonight?
I'm not a guy that puts down people.

Speaker 4 (34:03):
No, no, man, I'm like from mom Be Churchill, we.

Speaker 3 (34:06):
We don't do that.

Speaker 5 (34:07):
I'm kidding. What do you got tonight, Mike? You could
put down as many people as you want.

Speaker 8 (34:11):
We go.

Speaker 4 (34:14):
If I have your approval of it, then of course
I love the targe of the chores. That's why I
love your show so much. The uh, this is what
happens every time we go through is swamp. I mean,
even prior to the World Series of the Playoffs, you know,
we thought we were out of it and we came
through for usus Dave Roberts, we didn't have any pitching,
we had scraps for Bolton. He still pulled it out.

(34:35):
And so when people go to blame him, it's like
constantly forget that seven months ago we were in the
same predicament everywhere all the way and he navigated it
through it. There's always complaints social media, Facebook, Instagram, whatever
it is. There's just so much hate going on for
the team, and it's like, you shall realize we're in
the first place, and we're what the second best team

(34:55):
in the National League that I think, behind the Brewers,
and obviously you're just on a tear. We're still yeah,
way about that where we should be considering, you know,
the sick to another sports stalk and they were raiding
the Daughters of d plus And I think that's pretty
good assessment given all the stuff that we're still growing,
we still have the top Hinners. People are gonna slump.
It's a long season. We're going to be fine. People

(35:17):
just need to relax. We've been through a lot worse
than this in our I've been a fan since eighty eight,
you know, I was eight years old at the time,
and I've seen a lot worse things happen. So this
is not a big deal. We'll get through it. We're
going to be fine. Don't fire people. That's not going
to solve anything. We have the best and pretty much
all the sports, and we're going to be fine.

Speaker 5 (35:37):
All right, Mike, thanks for the phone call. Appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (35:39):
Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number he mentioned.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
The Brewers.

Speaker 7 (35:44):
Yes, the Brewers went up to Seattle tonight and shut
out the Mariners six to nothing. The Brewers have won
eleven in a row and now have a sixty and
forty record. That's the best record in baseball. Six of
those eleven wins, though against the Dodgers, but they have
an eleven game winning streak, and the Brewers right now,

(36:09):
as we sit here alone at Dodgers Stadium, have the
best record in baseball sixty and forty. Also, since we're
going around Major League Baseball, I just want to send
a harty congratulations, a passionate congratulations to my guy. Rich Hill,
America's pitcher is going to be called up tomorrow to

(36:30):
start for his fourteenth team in his career, which ties
former Dodger Edwin Jackson for the most teams to play
on fourteen teams. Rich Hill for the Royals tomorrow at
Wrigley Field, where it all started for rich Hill back
in two thousand and five when he made his major

(36:51):
league debut with the Cubs. Rich Hill, forty five years old,
starting tomorrow at Wrigley Field for the Kansas City Royals. So,
my guy, Rich Hill has put in a lot of work,
a lot of sacrifice, and certainly has a lot of
love for the game back in the big leagues tomorrow
for Kansas City. All right, let's check in with another
guy that has love for the game, Jose Moda.

Speaker 6 (37:14):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Mota.

Speaker 7 (37:20):
All right, Jose Moda. You heard James Outman after the game.
He made it seem like it was a routine catch,
But that catch to save and rob what would have
been a game tying home run was more than just
routine or just another f eight.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
He plays it right. I mean, he's a guy that
obviously would like to be playing more, but he knows
as a reason why he is here. We saw it
happened in San Francisco. We saw it happened today. One
thing that I admire about James Outman is the fact
that you know, will you pay attention on what's happening
with balls being out head in the air all throughout
the game? You though that he cannot be gliding to
get to that baseball're gonna go in his urgency. I

(37:58):
know there's no doubles situation there, as you mentioned clearly
on next So Doug got you saw it quite well.
But he put himself in a very good position too,
not have to get to the ball, but to get
to the spot and then find the baseball. And he
timeled perfectly. So defense won the game. The homers were
great show. It was great us to May, but there
was at least six outstanding play today that just allowed

(38:20):
the doctors to come up with win.

Speaker 7 (38:23):
I thought maybe the second most key defensive play was
Tommy Edmund making that catch on Harrison baders smoke line
drive in the eighth inning.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
How big of a play was that?

Speaker 3 (38:35):
Oh? That was huge. I mean Tanner Scott coming in
and the line of the line drive right away and
he saves you know, timing, positioning, a lot of things
that go on with you know, decisions that are made
before a game, before a series where you want Tommy
Emmen to be playing in that type of situation, and
obviously athleticism and talent takes care of it. But that
was so big. But I go back to the first

(38:55):
in one, Freddie Freeman. I'll go back to Tulasta too.
Good plays today and again, Faith, we know we're not
talking about outstanding highlight player you're going to see all
over the TV tonight. It's about the routine plays like
yesterday that were not made that made the difference in
how guys approach played the outfield today.

Speaker 7 (39:14):
No doubt, and that's something that Dave Roberts is going
to demand more focus out there in the outfield than
we saw tonight. And that was certainly good to see
as the Dodgers beat the Twins five to two. One
other part of this game that I loved was the
starting lineup. I'm a big fan of Mookie bedsitting leadoff,
and especially with Otani pitching tonight him hitting second, But

(39:36):
I especially love Will Smith getting moved up to the
three spot considering how well he's swinging the bat these days.

Speaker 3 (39:44):
Let's talk about monkey. Mookie starts with the walk. That's
a different mindset of mentality starting off the game. Here
comes show. Hey, hey, it's a whole mun But we're
talking about a guy that has bet a lead up
in his career one thousand and seventy two times. I mean,
come on, games, I should say, idea what he needs
to do. But again, on top of that is how
you structure the lineup and how you pair things up.

(40:06):
Now you're pairing up Wilson old Tawny, and you have
Freddy Fruman behind him that no matter what Freddy Friedan's
going through, he's still Freddie Freeman. So Pitcher's gonna think
to us about what they do against Will Smith. But
Will Smith, as he mentioned, a guy that for years
has not been talked about a lot. He's been clutched
in every type of atmosphere with the Dodgers early season,
mid season. He plays hurt but man with a sweet swing.

(40:29):
He keeps it quite simple. He's healthy. He's being managed
a different way this year. There's no doubt that the
Bull's jumping off like like his april pretty much with
that crisp swing that he does have. But he's got
a low, mating swing. He understand who he is. He's
not cut up and anything else is just squiring the ball,
funding something up in the air and using every single
part of the field. That's why he's so tough to pitch.

Speaker 11 (40:49):
Is.

Speaker 3 (40:49):
I talked to a couple of guys that you know
the All Star break and they're like, yeah, that Will
Smith guy. I mean, what do you do with them
men' scoring position? If you go up and end, he's
gonna maybe punch it the other way. If you miss
it on a hanging and breaking was going to hit
it out. So that's the kind of tuck you want
to hear about. Players that know that make a difference
for you because they may not capture all the attention nationwide,
but they're such an important factor that pitchers talk about

(41:12):
about how tough it's a pitch.

Speaker 7 (41:13):
For him, Jose before I let you go the injury
to Tanner Scott, how bad did it look? When did
you believe that maybe he felt something in his throws?

Speaker 3 (41:27):
My first observation was a pitch before where I was
watched in velocity, and I'm also watching this and not
being another break him up by the way. He threw
fourteen sliders tonight that is mostly thrown in an outing
as a Dodger, and he's snapping it quite well. He
got with six swings, fire swings and misses and pretty
much the best outter he's had. But it is unfortunate

(41:49):
that it happened. I know that you spend time with him,
and he liked this guy a lot, and you never
want to see a guy like that who's trying to
find his way back into, you know, a factor with
his ball club come out of the game. But you
can see right away, I mean, he was holding his leg,
but you can tell him what he's trying to do
is just kind of keep the paint away by squeezing
his pants and trying to get the pain away and

(42:09):
the sting from his form. So hopefully what we're hear
tomorrow is not something that's going to hurt him for
the rest of the year. But I think we all
know how this thing starts. Where things go with baseball nowadays,
the injuries and whatever you talk form, you know, you
talk about way more sometimes.

Speaker 7 (42:24):
No doubt, and the Dodgers are going to have to
piece this together until they're able to pull off a
trade before the trade deadline on July thirty first, Jose,
thanks a lot for checking in.

Speaker 5 (42:35):
We'll see you tomorrow at the ballpark.

Speaker 3 (42:37):
Got it? See it?

Speaker 5 (42:39):
There?

Speaker 7 (42:40):
He goes Jose Mota, part of the Dodgers Spanish radio broadcast.
Dodgers beat the Twins tonight five to two. Let's go
back out to the phones. Jose was at Dodgers Stadium tonight.
Hi Jose, you're on Dodger Talk. From one Jose to another.

Speaker 5 (42:54):
How you doing?

Speaker 8 (42:56):
Hey, awesome, awesome, Thanks for taking my call. First of all,
I love listening to you every day when for postseason
postgame shows. Thank you so much. I have a quick
shout out to my nephew Dodger game first one, first
Dodger Dog. We even went to Tommy's Burger's. Right now,
we're just leaving Tommy's an Eagle Rock to celebrate the victory.
We got Jeff rings. We're stoked, we're excited. I just

(43:20):
have to say, I don't understand why every single year
we have to deal with the skip. You know, everyone
always seems to just pour on this guy. I don't
get it. Is it because he's a Brewin and you
have a bunch of Trojans out there that are haters?
I don't know, But I don't know me what this guy,
he takes the heat, he continues to move forward, he

(43:41):
stays the court, and I just wanted to ask you,
you know, moving into the second half. So he's got
my support, but moving into the second half of the season,
what are some of the changes that you might see
moving forward before postseason? Thank you so much for what
you do. I really really appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (43:59):
All right, Hose, Thanks, that's a lot for the phone call.

Speaker 7 (44:01):
You enjoy that chili cheeseburger with some chili cheese fries
out there in Eagle Rock. I haven't had Tommy's in
a long time, probably ten years. I used to go
to the one in Canoga Park a lot, but man,
I can't pay the price. The next day I have
to pick my spots on that one. Anyway, I already
mentioned some of the right handed, high leverage relievers that

(44:24):
are realistic targets. The outfield could be another area where
the Dodgers are looking to add a bat. How about
Harrison Bader who is playing for the Twins now he's
played in a big market in New York. How about
Jared Durana the Red Sox. The Red Sox are are
you know, looking to get more starting pitching and to

(44:44):
free up some of their position players to be able
to play on a regular basis. If Jared Duran's available,
He's a long Beach State dirt bag. I wouldn't be
opposed to Jared Duran in LA. But basically, right now,
the Dodgers are looking to help their bullpen, and if
they're able to improve their outfield as well, I could

(45:05):
see them doing that as as part of the trade
deadline to give them the best chance to make a
run again to win back to back World Series championships.
Andrew Frieman has made big trades at the deadline before,
He's not gun shy to do that again. And obviously
we all know the Dodgers are all in to try
to make that happen, all right, that'll do it for

(45:27):
us on Dodger Talk tonight. Coming up tomorrow, Game two
of this three game series. Yoshi Yamamoto making his first
start after the All Star break tomorrow night. He's eight
and seven with an ERA at two fifty nine, going
up against right handers Simeon Woods Richardson five and four
with an ERA at three ninety five. Morongo Casino. Dodgers

(45:49):
on Deck begins at six o'clock, first pitch at seven
to ten. That'll do it for us tonight from Dodgers Stadium.
Thanks to Colin Ye back at our Burbank Studios, Thanks
to Dwayne Donald out here at Dodgers Stadium, and thanks
to you for listening. In case you missed any of
the show, you can find it on the iHeartRadio app.
That's also you can hear our pregame conversation with former

(46:10):
Dodger and now Twins reliever Brock Stewart. That's right, Brock
is now one of the better relievers in the American League.
He joined us on the pregame show. You'll enjoy that conversation.
He hasn't forgotten the little people, So thank you, Brock.

Speaker 5 (46:25):
Once again.

Speaker 7 (46:26):
The final score tonight from Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers hold
on thanks to James Autman's game saving catch with a
five to two win over the Twins. Ben Maller, Yeah
he works. He's next on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 5 (46:39):
