Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this gene is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
This teen is really becoming a family. Let's not play
one on too.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Let's lend it.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
I love writing me these guys after the show.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
So just thank you, give me are your attention, your
fire and not a pisses.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
This is world champion, Dodger world championing for a.
Speaker 5 (00:21):
Small soft time. They get up people. What they want
to die in a row two is special.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
I'm like, yeah, it's not a headache one of them?
Speaker 5 (00:29):
Can this ball's gone? You ready to go?
Speaker 6 (00:32):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (00:33):
Hell old time to the sound grab your phone to
get in.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
On the show called eight six six nine eighty seven
two five seven and go to the show. And now
your host of Dodger Talk, David.
Speaker 7 (00:44):
Vasse, Welcome the Dodger Talk David Vasse live at Dodgers
Stadium until midnight tonight, taking your phone calls at eight
sixty six nine eighty seven two five seventy. The Dodgers
fall to the Twins tonight by a final score of
ten to seven, and it's hard to believe it's only
the third time since twenty fifteen the Twins have beaten
(01:08):
the Dodgers and tonight. There's an argument to be made
that the Dodgers beat themselves in a lot of ways,
issuing six walks out of their bullpen tonight, including three
from Ben Casparius and the other from Will Klein, and
then at Guardo and Riquez made matters worse when he
threw the ball into right field and cleared the bases,
(01:30):
and that basically was the game. And certainly from the
seventh inning on, that wasn't Dodger baseball. Sixth inning on,
that wasn't Dodger baseball. I can't remember the last time
the Dodger bullpen issued six walks in that manner and
then made an error of the way en Riquez made.
That's just not something we have seen. Yes, these guys
(01:52):
throw upwards of ninety nine one hundred miles an hour
in the case of Kleine and in Riquez, but you
gotta throw strikes.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
That's paramount For the Dodgers.
Speaker 7 (02:03):
Andrew Friedman has said that from day one, those are
the type of relievers he wants throwing strikes, so it
doesn't matter how hard you throw. And Will Klein's an
interesting guy. He's one of those under the radar relievers
that might turn out to be something, but he's got
to be able to command his pitches and so far
(02:23):
we haven't seen that consistently. And Riquez same thing. I mean,
he did get soft contact, that wasn't the issue. He
threw strikes, but panicked in the when the ball just
deadened on the grass and didn't bounce up as much
as he thought it would, and he panicked and threw
the ball into right field. Andy po Has wasn't moving
(02:46):
on the play, so you know it got to the wall.
Maybe it still gets to the wall, but Pa Haz
wasn't moving on the play. And we're all taught, right,
even major leaguers know that you got to be moving
on every play, and if you're the right fielder on
a play like that, you gotta be moving towards the
line to back up. Kim was backing up, but it
was one hundred and two miles an hour into right field.
(03:08):
I don't even know if Patz could have got it.
But nonetheless, very uncharacteristic of the Dodgers, And look, the
way things are going in the month of July is
not something that we're used to from this Dodger team.
The defending World Series champions who are just six and
eleven in the month of July eight six, six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. I
(03:30):
do have good news because it's good that Freddie Freeman
started to look like Freddie Freeman again today. He was
on base three times tonight and also his uh out
was to left field, and that's a good sign because
that's where Freddy Freeman likes to, you know, even make
his outs to the opposite field and even to center field.
(03:55):
So that was a good sign. And we are going
to hear from Tanner Scott in a moment. But I
I just want to clarify something in regards to Dustin May.
All of a sudden, Twitter and the Internet is exploding
just because I mentioned the Petrosen money earlier today that
it is possible that last night could have been the
last time that Dustin May pitched at Dodger Stadium in
(04:17):
a Dodger uniform, which it is very possible. The trade
deadline is going to happen when the Dodgers are in Tampa, Florida.
Dustin May is an attractive piece. The Dodger rotation is
getting a little crowded. He wants to be a starter
although he did say in spring training he would do
whatever the Dodgers wanted. And the Dodgers may need to
(04:37):
keep them in the bullpen now with Ben Casparius going down,
with Tanner Scott going down on the il, they may need.
Speaker 5 (04:44):
To keep Dustin May.
Speaker 7 (04:45):
But the reality is Dustin May is a free agent
at the end of the year, and the reality is
it's very possible for him and anybody not named Otani, Betts, Smith,
Munsey and Freeman to be traded.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
That's the reality of it.
Speaker 7 (05:01):
So when I say possible, and I know we're getting
closer to July thirty first, so whatever you say, these
other aggregated websites need to grab something and put it up.
But I mean, come on, that's ridiculous. And I did
talk to Dustin about the photo he was taking with
his wife while we were doing the show yesterday last night,
(05:23):
and he just said, yeah, no, there was nothing emotional
about it. My wife wanted to take a picture, so
I obliged. So there was nothing else there and there
was nothing to read into. So please, can we pump
the brakes. I'm me saying Dustin May is going to
get traded. I mean, it's possible. It's possible. Like I said,
for anybody not named Betts, Otani, Smith, Freeman, Munsey, Kershaw,
(05:50):
you know who I'm talking about.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
It's it's possible. So let's just pump the brakes on
all that.
Speaker 7 (05:58):
And uh man, I guess I gotta be a little
bit more careful when it comes to talking about the
trade deadline. But I don't feel like you have to
be careful to know who the targets are of, not
only the Dodgers or any other team out there. Teams
are looking for pitching, and if it's you're gonna need
to maybe give up some pitching to get pitching. David
(06:21):
Bednard the Pirates, Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals, Kenley Jansen
of the Angels. These are relief pitchers teams are interested in.
Mason Miller of the A's. Those are relief pitchers teams
are interested in.
Speaker 5 (06:35):
One name that a lot of.
Speaker 7 (06:36):
People are missing though, that the Dodgers realistically may have
a chance to land is a guy by the name
of Griffin Jacks of the Twins.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
I mentioned him last night.
Speaker 7 (06:46):
Yeah he's not Joean Duran, but right now the Dodgers
need some arms that can throw strikes. And can handle
themselves in the moment, and maybe Enriquez and Will Klein,
are you know just right now guys that they need
in that bullpen with all the injuries they've sustained.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
But things can change.
Speaker 7 (07:05):
Obviously, on July thirty first, eight six six, nine eighty
seven two five seventy is the phone number we have
not heard from Tanner Scott until now.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
He was not available before the game.
Speaker 7 (07:17):
Obviously a lot going on with the MRI, but he
spoke to reporters tonight just moments ago on Sports at LA.
So here is Tanner Scott about the injury that forced
him out of the game and into an MRI today Belter.
Speaker 8 (07:31):
Than we expected, and I mean sale feels in the
next couple of days, and I mean it's positive, positive outcome.
Speaker 9 (07:38):
Yeah, when you just in the moment, I have to
imagine it was really scary and kind of thinking it
might be a season ending injury.
Speaker 5 (07:45):
Just can you.
Speaker 9 (07:45):
Describe your own emotions feeling of relief and knowing that
this could be a shorter eye ole stint.
Speaker 8 (07:51):
Yeah, I mean definitely when it was happening, I had
no clue what was going on because I've never had
an army shoot in my entire career, and I filled
it on the one one pitch and then it kept
getting worse and I was like, no clue what it is.
So after today it kind of gave me like a
clear head.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
What did Dean Roy kind of show just information or inflammation?
Speaker 8 (08:10):
Nope, no, no, damn pligument's perfectly attacked.
Speaker 9 (08:15):
I think even you and understanding. It's just like timeline
wise as to what it could mean.
Speaker 8 (08:19):
Uh no, don't throw for the next I think two
days and then start going from there and trending.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
That you'll be back this season for sure?
Speaker 5 (08:31):
For sure?
Speaker 10 (08:33):
Is it just watching the bullpen as a whole struggle.
Speaker 9 (08:35):
One at night like this?
Speaker 8 (08:37):
I mean, it's it's tough. I mean, especially now that
I'm on the aisle and I mean I want to pitch,
and I mean things are going to turn around.
Speaker 7 (08:44):
Hot word, All right, there's Tanner Scott on sports in
at LA. That's great news that his elbow ligament is
intact and that he has gotten reassurance after going through
the MRI that his arm is okay. Just felt something
last night that concerned him and better to be safe
than sorry in that situation, So that's good news. And
(09:07):
that's good news that Tennor Scott is going to be
back this year, and it seems like everything's hey okay,
eight six, six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to the phones tonight.
After the Dodgers fall to the Twins ten to seven.
Sergio in Las Vegas. You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, Sergio?
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Hey, David, thanks for having me on. As I was
telling Colin, if you went at the stadium today and
didn't watch or didn't listen to the game and somebody
told you that the Dodgers scored seven runs struck out
thirteen Minnesota Twins, I think most of us would have
thought the Dodgers had won today. It's just it was
(09:47):
just a crazy game. You mentioned the walks, including Yamamoto's
watts seven wats, six of them scored. Man, I think
you need to bring your midst to the stadium tomorrow
because they're going to need you in the bullpen.
Speaker 11 (10:00):
David.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
It's just hopefully Andrew Friedman is working the phones, and
is there any way you can go kidnap Jack and
Duran and not leave him, not let him leave La
and help our bullpen.
Speaker 10 (10:12):
Out there, because this is this is ridiculous.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
Man, Yeah, I know, this is Uh, this is way
more injuries to a bullpen than you would expect in
one first half of the season or just over first half.
It's it's really tested the Dodgers' depth. And let's see
what the Dodgers get from Alexis Das. He came into
a tough spot infield and base it through the infield.
(10:38):
He was in charged with all the runs. But I
want to see what they got in Alexis Das. I've
been talking about him and if he can, if the
Dodgers hit on him, that would make their trade deadline
a little bit easier and certainly give themselves a little
extra depth in their bullpen. But tonight in their bullpen,
you look at they had Ben Casparius, they had Will
kleinb At, Guardo Enriquez as, Alexis Diaz, Kirby Yates, Anthony Benda,
(11:04):
Alex Vesia, That's who they had. And Jack Dryer who
came into the game at the end. Those are the
guys the Dodgers had in their bullpen. That's those are
not the names you expect to have in that Dodger
bullpen as we get closer to the end of July,
but that's where they're at, and people that want a
second guest Dave Roberts about bringing in this guy or
(11:25):
bringing in that guy.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Who who did you want him to bring in?
Speaker 7 (11:29):
When you're down a run, you're down three runs, you
can't just run Alex Vesia out there every single night.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
You can't run out Jack Dryer.
Speaker 7 (11:37):
And I thought it was tough to pitch Jack Dryer
in a game like tonight, but he had nobody else.
So it's inexcusable no matter who you are, good enough
to be on the Dodgers to walk three guys in
an inning and you had two of them do that tonight.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Let's go out to Westlake Village. David, you're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
How you doing, David, I've been better, DV. Thanks for
taking my call.
Speaker 10 (12:03):
Man.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
I was at the game tonight, and that's a long drive,
you know, from Westlake Village all the way to Dodger
Stadium to watch that kind of garbage baseball. I'm a
huge Dodger fan, so I want to go positive first
because I love my team. Shout out to Andy Pajes
for hitting that three run Jack that was awesome, and
a two out clutch hit from hissan Kim was fantastic.
(12:24):
I have to say that the negative man and I
feel for Roberts the pitching. He's just got no options
out there. My one note on Casparius because Ben has
been great, but if he was hurting in the beginning
of warm ups and he was feeling something, why do
you not say something after you walk the first guy,
(12:46):
or maybe after you walk the second guy, maybe you
bring out the trainer. Then you don't walk the house
and walk a run in before you have the trainer
come in. If he was feeling it already in the bullpen,
that's my one note on Ben and the rest of
the pitchers. Man will climb, you know, Alexis I mean,
I don't. I don't want to say anything that's gonna
get me in trouble, so I'm gonna I'm gonna cut
(13:07):
it off right there. But Freedman. Friedman has got to
be popping the Alka. Seltzer's right now thinking, oh gosh,
there's another prospect. I'm gonna have to trade now there's
another prospect because they need at least a couple relievers. Man,
they need a couple relievers, and one last thing, DV.
I don't care how you spin it, man, the Michael
(13:29):
CONFORDO experience experiment has to be over. I mean, I
know he hasn't been playing terribly, and he's been making
some catches out there and getting a couple he got
to hit today, But Dude, that dude is a rally killer.
He's been a rally killer all season long. The dude's
hitting a buck eighty. I let him be batting fifth
(13:49):
or six for the Marlins or the Rockies or the Pirates,
but not for the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Playing
left field, there's no way. You've got to get tail
and left and you've got to get pie right. And
I'll tell you why you got to do it sooner
than later, because those two guys need to get used
to playing those positions. Like you said, backing stuff up
in right field, they need to get used to playing
(14:10):
those positions. And Andrew Friedman needs to go out there
and get a sweet footed over a nine hundred fielding
percentage center fielder. That's what he's got to do. I
don't think it's in house unless Edmund's ankle is okay.
And he could play center starting August.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
He's fine, He's fine. He've said a lot there.
Speaker 7 (14:29):
I mean, we're trying to digest everything that you said
right there, David, and I don't disagree with a lot
of it, but I appreciate the phone call. Wow, let
me unpack a lot of what he said right there. Yeah,
it's been a season long struggle for Michael Confordo, no
doubt about it. He just praised Hayesan cam for two out,
two run single.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
Well, how did it get to that point?
Speaker 7 (14:51):
Michael Confordo doubled in front of him with two outs,
So I know Confordo hasn't been perfect this year, less
than and yeah, if there's an option out there, you know,
I feel like the Dodgers don't want to confine themselves
to a player that has more than the rest of
this year on their contract, because that gives them freedom
(15:13):
to be able to go out this offseason and maybe
make a play for an outfielder that's available.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Harrison Bader of the Twins.
Speaker 7 (15:22):
I mean, that guy would fit the bill if you
wanted an improvement in the outfield.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
And look, I disagree.
Speaker 7 (15:28):
I think the Dodgers do have the in house options
to make the outfield look a little bit more like
it did last year. Tommy Edmond can't play center field,
Andy pa has can play center field. I'm thinking Kei
y Hernandez is coming back. He was the center fielder
all through October last year. So I disagree. I think
(15:49):
the Dodgers do have the options in house if they
don't get an outfielder at the trade deadline. And James Outman,
if you know, he's a guy that is at a
cross roads as well. Is it going to be with
the Dodgers or are the Dodgers going to possibly use
him to try to get a.
Speaker 5 (16:07):
High leverage, right handed reliever.
Speaker 7 (16:08):
A lot of teams would love to have James Outman,
So he's at a crossroads too. If the Dodgers don't
trade him. Is James Outman part of the solution? You
have to wait and see. I thought he's swung the
bat better tonight and just need to get his confidence up.
But first and foremost, Andrew Friedman's on the record is
saying he's going after a right handed, high leverage reliever.
(16:31):
He said that two months ago when the Dodgers found
out that Evan Phillips was done for the year, So
his focus is on that. And if there is an
opportunity to be able to acquire an outfielder to make
things better offensively and defensively, I'm sure he's going to
look at that as well. But first and foremost, he's
(16:52):
got to get some help in that bullpen. The Dodgers
starting rotations healthy now, right. They got Glass now back.
Snell's going to be coming back here, maybe by the
end of this month, so their rotations back. Let's go
out to your Belinda.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Josh. You're on Dodger Talk Live from Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 10 (17:09):
Hi, Josh, are you doing d V?
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Thanks so much for taking the call.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
My pleasure.
Speaker 10 (17:16):
What do you get?
Speaker 3 (17:18):
First of all, I just wanted to say you're doing
an awesome job. Man, love listening to you.
Speaker 10 (17:22):
You you're awesome and what you do.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
I guess I just want to a lot.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
Of people here, but they don't listen. A lot of
people here and don't listen. They they got me trading
dustin May yesterday. That's not what I said today. I
said it's possible, and it is possible.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Don't listen to them DV. You're the best. Hey, I
I've been listening to a lot of sports talk around
the around the nation, and I'm tired of hearing all
these people already counting the Dodgers out. Ben Verlander was
yapping about how great the Cubs are and how the
Cubs are a better team than the Dodgers, and how
they have better vibes and they know how to they
know how to grind out when and I just want
(18:01):
to get your take because I feel like our team
are fighters, They're just hurt and we're not We're not
there yet, and just kind of see what you think
are is it time to hit the panic button? And
then I just got do you think I don't think.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
It's time to hit the panic button.
Speaker 7 (18:17):
I don't believe it's time to hit the panic button,
But it is time to hit the urgency button. You
gotta you gotta have some urgency. Kershaw showed that on Sunday.
He showed the urgency. He wasn't just saying, you know what,
we'll get them next time. The rest of the team
has got to take that on as their identity the
rest of the regular season. You can't get bored with
(18:39):
the regular season.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
Do you think they have that urgency in them?
Speaker 12 (18:44):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (18:44):
Yeah, they do. They're the champs. They did something right.
Speaker 7 (18:47):
They know how to do it, they know how to
navigate a season, and right now, you know, for the
better part of this year, their pitching hasn't been whole.
Whether it's the starting rotation, whether it's been the bullpen,
they just haven't been whole. And you know, I do
like the offense getting jump started now at Mookie at leadoff,
Will Smith hitting third, and Freeman hitting cleanup. And Max
(19:09):
Munsey is going to be back within the next two weeks.
So they're in a good spot. Still, They're still in
first place. They're not ten games back. They are still
in first place.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
Yeah, Hey, do you think this is curse was last year?
What's your take on that?
Speaker 7 (19:27):
I would, I mean, it feels like baseball is trying
to make it his last year, but I don't believe
he's made any decision on that. They might have to
bring him back next year as a Legends pick.
Speaker 10 (19:39):
Let's do it.
Speaker 13 (19:40):
Let's do it.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Thanks you all right, Josh, Thanks for the phone call.
Speaker 7 (19:43):
Yeah, as far as that goes, there are so many
different variables that will go into Kershaw's decision at the
end of the year about whether or not this is
it for him, and it's going to be first and
foremost his health. Second, does his family still want him
to keep doing this for a nineteenth year. He's got
four kids a fifth on the way, So there's a
lot of different variables that haven't been determined yet whether
(20:06):
or not he's coming back next season.
Speaker 5 (20:08):
And just a reminder, the.
Speaker 7 (20:09):
Dodgers are fifty nine and forty three, three and a
half games ahead of the Padres, six games ahead of
the Giants in the NL West. Uh and this is
with them going through the biggest storm of their season.
They have lost what eleven of thirteen. They have a
six and eleven record in the month of July.
Speaker 5 (20:31):
So you know this.
Speaker 7 (20:33):
If you're going to beat the Dodgers, or if you're
playing the Dodgers, now's the time because give it another
two weeks, it's not going to be the same team.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
Trust me.
Speaker 7 (20:43):
Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to Rain Georgia. You're
on Dodger Talk with David vasse Hi.
Speaker 13 (20:51):
Ray, Hey, David, amen on what you just said, because
we should be five games behind with Bilworth thank god, okay,
and the Giants have stumbled themselves. So it's a blessing
and we'll be fine, like you said, But I want
to bring up two things. First of all, today when
Confordo came up, we were down four in a eighth
(21:12):
and it was first and second. We just need runners
on the base. He would lay down a butt. That
would have been an easy base it. Why do the
Dodgers don't bunt? I think Rojas tried to bunt the
other day or Edmund. It was Edmund and I said, great.
And you know, Dave Roberts, his whole thing is a
ballplayer with a scrappy ballplayer. He would bunt steel bases
(21:34):
and I don't know why it's so hard in that
situation that would have been bases loaded, they would have been.
That's not on the scouting report by the Twins that
because nobody bunts onto Dodgers. Don't you think that would
have been a great move.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (21:49):
Possibly, Yeah, that wouldn't be a bad move for sure.
I saw Cam actually show bunt for the first time,
and I don't know, I've only seen him show bunt
once or twice, So like him showing but tonight with
the left side of the infield shifting and leaving.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Him a lot of room over there.
Speaker 7 (22:07):
So I you know he can hit, but in certain situations,
just like Christian Yelich, if you're not seeing a left
hander the right way, or if you're not feeling great
in the batter's box, give yourself up.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Have a team at bat.
Speaker 13 (22:22):
Yeah, and last thing, I just think we would solve
so many problems. I mean this thing with Mookie. I mean,
he is a gamer. He's a team player, and he
will do anything the Dodgers asks for him. And he's
not going to say put me that back in the
right field. But I think the Dodgers what they should
do is say, we're gonna put you back in right field.
(22:42):
That's okay with you, Mookie. And we're gonna put Hernandez
in left. That's going to serve the outfield. And maybe
we could trade for a shortstop. I don't know the Rojas.
I think the more he hits, the better he is.
And I just think, what do you think of that move?
Speaker 10 (22:57):
I think that's option two albums.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
I don't.
Speaker 7 (23:00):
I wouldn't rule that out right, I really wouldn't. The
Dodgers did it last year. Mookie went out there for
the betterment of the team. He's playing good shortstop though,
that's what makes it tough. He's playing solid shortstop. But
if they need it, if they need better outfield defense,
they can play Edmond.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
And Rojas at shortstop.
Speaker 7 (23:19):
But that's not going to formulate itself until Max Munsey
comes back, because right now they need Edmund and Rojas
at third base.
Speaker 10 (23:27):
Two.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Thanks for the phone call, Ray appreciated.
Speaker 7 (23:30):
Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Speaking of Tommy Edmund, he joined us
before the game today and I did present to him
the perception around the league that these Dodgers, the world champions,
are maybe a little bored with the regular season.
Speaker 10 (23:49):
No, I don't.
Speaker 12 (23:50):
I don't think you can ever get bored with playing
Major League Baseball games. You know, every game has a
ton of challenges, and you know you gotta get ready
each and every day. You know, you're playing gainst Major
League Baseball teams, and every team you play against has
some really good talent, especially you know the pitching side. Now,
every single guy you face, every guy that gets called
up for the miners, has nasty stuff. So you gotta
(24:10):
be prepared regardless of who you're facing.
Speaker 7 (24:14):
Yeah, and then if the people that are suggesting that
the Dodgers are bored with the regular season, Yeah, maybe
one or two guys get bored or lose focus during
the season or during this period of time of the season.
But it's hard to say the Dodgers are bored with
the regular season when you see Mookie Bets out here
at two thirty every day taking ground balls.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
It's hard to say the Dodgers are bored.
Speaker 7 (24:39):
When you see Tommy Edmund out here at two thirty
or in the cage underground, or out here at two
thirty three o'clock in the afternoon, it's tough to say
the Dodgers are bored with the regular season. When Freddie
Freeman is grinding every day to stay in the lineup
and taking batting practice out on the field the last
couple of days and doing his regular routine. It's hard
(25:02):
to say the Dodgers are bored with the regular season
when you see them consistently every single day stick to
their routine. Now, focus comes and goes sometimes they're human.
But I would push back on people suggesting the Dodgers
are bored with the regular season because those that suggest
(25:25):
it aren't out here every day watching These guys prepare
every single day five six hours before first pitch, and
I'm talking about the best players. So yeah, that's easy
to say when the Dodgers go into a little bit
of a funk and they're not playing great defense in
(25:46):
the outfield and there are lapses of focus, like Dave
Roberts said a couple of days ago, but it's not
because they're bored with the regular season. How can you
be bored with the regular season. You're only three and
a half games ahead of the Padres in the n
L West. You don't have the best record in the
National League anymore. So I don't know how you could
be bored with it. And from what I see every day, uh,
(26:09):
I don't see guys just punting on the regular season.

At Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 7 (27:31):
Show Hey Otani, as you heard Stephen Nelson mentioned for

Christian Vasquez, their catcher, hitting ninth tonight and batting a
(28:15):
buck ninety, was two for four with three RBIs. Royce
Lewis did not have a hit, but he got three RBIs.
Go figure that was on the Agardo Enriquez throwing error
down the right field line, So not sure how that
all adds up, but nonetheless the score is right. Twins
beat the Dodgers ten to seven, But the Dodgers have
(28:37):
glass now on the mound going up against the struggling
Chris Paddock and should come away winning this series two
out of three before they head out on a big
road trip on the East Coast, three in Boston, three
in Cincinnati, and three in Tampa, and before they start
that series against the Rays in Tampa. To wrap up
(28:57):
this nine game road trip, it will be the July thirty,
first trade deadline. Let's head out to the phones and
check in with our guy, Jose Moda.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
It's tough to go around the horn with Jose Mota.
Speaker 7 (29:12):
All right, Jose Mota, Let's start off where Tanner Scott
said there was no structural damage to his pitching elbow.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
That's gonna be a big sigh relief for the Dodgers.
Speaker 10 (29:24):
It is a big relief. And you consider that everything
that has been going on with Tanner Scott and all
the struggles and other things that out of he has
face on the backside of adversity. Just to think about,
you know, the void without him, it's it's something that
you go, Okay, how do we replace somebody late ending
arm to come in there and you know, hopefully say
(29:46):
some games, you know, we know, I mean, the examples
of him failure are there. There's no doubt about it.
But the good news is obviously, as he mentioned, structively,
it seems like everything is fine with that ligament and
hopefully you'll have a chance, as he he said, only
a couple of days without throwing, which is, you know,
amazing to me, and hopefully this time will serve for him.
There would be a time when you can go back
(30:08):
and just kind of resell a little bit more to
see what he needs to be better, because there's no
doubt he needs to be better. But hopefully he will
get healthy and stronger and better, Jose.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
From the sixth inning on, it was a little bit
sloppy from the Dodger bullpen. Obviously benk Casperius had to
come out of this game with what they called at
the time a right leg calf cramp, but it seems
like there's more if he's getting an MRI.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
What do you make of what you saw from Casparius?
Speaker 7 (30:37):
From Will Klein and the play where Gardo Enriquez threw
the ball into right field.
Speaker 10 (30:43):
Just too many walks. Teams like the Twins are going
to face off things like that. One thing two of
the Twins. And let me point this out, but going
back to yesterday, Dave, and if you look at the
amount of times they hit the ball hard against Shohill Tani,
no surprise to me that they did what they did tonight,
you know in nine bass and coming through in the coach.
I mean, they hit a lot of balls hard against
show Hey, even though show was able to find defense
(31:03):
and guys playing, you know, making some plays behind him,
but with a bullpen. At bullpen that was saw fourteen
appearances the first three games, and here we go again
after only three last night. It's hurtful because it thinks
that guys are trying to do more than they're capable
of doing. Nobody's actually fighting for a spot later in
the game, meaning a high leverage guy. But the walks
(31:26):
are just an issue in which you cannot be allowing
yourself to not prevent runs. And we will talk about
preventing runs and run prevention day. We always talk about
the defensive side, but the pitching side of it has
a lot to do with that and not giving up
free passports, the wild pitches, you know, things like the
bock and things like that, but also the defensive side,
(31:46):
there are plays that need to be made, they need
to be out. So I think one today for an example,
is when the ball bounces off Miguel Rojas, Mookie makes
a play, but theirs has to be an out at
second base and all combined for the term capitalize on it.
But the guys out of the bullpit need do a
better job.
Speaker 7 (32:04):
That makes a lot of sense, Hose, It's a lot
of different little things that add up to extra bases,
extra outs that Tim teams like the Twins take advantage of.
As far as the good things for the Dodgers tonight,
we've seen enough of a sample size now off hay
Sung Kim getting regular starts at second base. Are you
seeing signs of a guy that's a staple now in
(32:28):
the starting lineup.
Speaker 10 (32:30):
There's no doubt about it. He's shown the ability to
handle some lefties. I don't think anybody expected Jason Kim
to be hitting four hundred right now. We know that
he is not a friend of a big moment, and
that's one thing where you get your player and sometimes
you get a player's pulse, and he's not a friend
of the big moment. He's going to go out there
and you know, control the bats and control the middle
(32:52):
of the field what like he does. But he's only
going to get better by playing more. He talks to
Freddie Freeman and you ask him how it feels with
him to his right in his night and day, No
doubt about it. On the fact that he knows it
was right. There's a guy making great place to his left,
meaning on Kim, you know, alleviating some of the pain
in some of the effort Freddy has to make to
(33:12):
make a play, make it easier on him. But this
guy's a difference maker. Has not been caught stealing, either
in the minor leagues or in the big leagues this year.
And if he's a two to fifty hitter, Dave, he's
still gonna make an impact. If he's a two seventy
five hitter, if he's a thread hitter, he's still going
to have an impact by learning the game, learning the zone.
The more he plays, the better off he's going to
be learning his own learning his role, and also learning
(33:33):
what is needed from him that particular any because we
know when he gets to the Bay ball most likely
it's going to be an out playing the infield.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
You mentioned Freddy Freeman.
Speaker 7 (33:42):
I thought tonight was the first night in a while
that Freddy Freeman looked like Freddy Freeman.
Speaker 10 (33:48):
It was good to see that. The foul balls in
the first inning on a two and zero pitch and
he pulls the ball basely. Then he has the walk
line drove to left field, which is he mentioned earlier
in the show, Dave, is I'm listening, Yeah, that's the
top of out it He wants where he's got a
little backspin, even if it's a little bit late. As
we say, that's good for Freddy then gets the walk also,
So I hope that this is an indication of him
at least two things as that Roberts talked about being
(34:11):
early with his loading, having the hands in the right spot,
and also hitting outside just to see and track how
the ball's getting out of his bat, how the ball's traveling,
how much backsmen you're getting. And sometimes you don't get
that in the cage. Sometimes in the cage you see
the ball hit the net close to you and you
think we'll get some carry. But now we hit outside,
you get a better idea as to what you need
(34:33):
to do to finish off your swing a little bit
better with a look at the machines or numbers about
exit velocity or swing speed to just tell you know,
this is what I need to do against big lick pitching,
because I know this is why I had been And
for Freddy, there's no doubt in anybody's mind that he
can go out there and just be a guy that
carries his team for a couple of months.
Speaker 7 (34:53):
All right, Jose, Tomorrow the Dodgers have an opportunity to
head out on the road with a series win over
the Twins. I would expect Tyler Glass now to do
what Tyler Glass now does, and the Dodgers to be
able to score some runs against Chris Paddock, who they've
had really good games against and sometimes he's had their number,
but it hasn't been a great year for him.
Speaker 5 (35:15):
I'm not going to go as far.
Speaker 7 (35:16):
As Jerry Harrison does to say it's a must win,
but there's got to be some urgency tomorrow, even in
a day game on getaway day, to get that win.
Speaker 10 (35:26):
Yes, you are at home, You're going to be facing
a challenging said you're coming up. Don't count on anything
else but tomorrow. A chance to win a series has
not happened here at out You're stadium in quite a while.
Now you have a guy in the mount who's been
remarkable so far, and a guy that's against the Twins
had a very use timing game with fourteen punchouts back
a year ago. So than anything, have some good at mats,
(35:49):
catch a baseball, keep it simple, and enjoy playing the game,
because no matter what the record says in July, you
still got to take care of one thing tomorrow's game.
Speaker 5 (35:57):
I love it. Be in the moment, right, Jose Mota,
be in the moments.
Speaker 10 (36:01):
Nothing like now.
Speaker 7 (36:03):
Okay, thanks a lot for checking in and staying up
late with us. We'll see you tomorrow at Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 10 (36:09):
My pleasure to have anything for you.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
Okay, thank you. There he goes.
Speaker 7 (36:13):
Jose Mota, part of the Spanish radio broadcast calling nine
innings tonight with Louis Cruz. Eight sixty six, nine eighty seven,
two five seventy is the phone number I have to celebrate.
Rich Hill, who took the mound at forty five years old,
tied Edwin Jackson for the most teams pitch four in
his Major league career. The Kansas City Royals make it
(36:36):
fourteen different teams. Rich Hill has pitch four, but it
feels like Boston, LA and where it started for him.
The Cubs are the three teams that he identifies with
the most, and certainly he meant a lot to a
lot of people here in Los Angeles and just the
way he left it all out on the mound, part
of back to back National League champions in seventeen and eighteen.
Speaker 5 (37:00):
Rich Hill's one of the best.
Speaker 7 (37:01):
That's why he's America's pitcher, and tonight he went out
at forty five years old and threw five innings at
Wrigley Field, scattered six hits and allowed just one earn
run and one stolen base. Do you know who stole
off of rich Hill tonight between the Royals and Cubs.
It was forty year old Justin Turner, his former teammate
(37:23):
that stole a base against rich Hill tonight and the
two forty somethings having some fun. And I saw a
great photo on Justin Turner's Instagram. You might want to
check it out. It's Justin his wife, Courtney, and their
son with Rich Hill, his wife and their son Bryce.
Really special with two guys that obviously left a big mark,
(37:45):
indelible mark here playing for the Dodgers, and here they are,
with the love of the game at forty five years
old and forty years old, respectively, still playing and trying
to keep their dreams alive.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
That's pretty awesome.
Speaker 7 (38:01):
And don't discount the leadership that Justin Turner has provided
the Cubs, who are having a really good year in
the NL Central.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
Let's take one more phone call.
Speaker 7 (38:12):
Usually this backfire is on me, but since Shane has
been holding for a while. I'm hoping it doesn't. So
Shane walk us off on Dodger Talk tonight.
Speaker 6 (38:22):
Yes, sir, so I want to ask about the rubber match.
What where were that originate from? So we have that
coming in tomorrow. And the other thing I want to say, well.
Speaker 7 (38:32):
Monday gets mad at me when I say rubber match.
It should be rubber game.
Speaker 6 (38:38):
Okay, sorry about that rubber game. No, No, that's my
you know, with you know, I just have to say
this about Conforto. You know, we we need to let
him sit. We're kind of I'm kind of tired of
where he's going when he goes like like we went
to go pinch hit for Edmund and then we took
(38:58):
it back because you know, the the games that you
know needed us to do that. But Conforto has not
been is not helping us at all anymore.
Speaker 7 (39:08):
And well that he does help at times. He's played
solid defense and left field, and tonight he was able
to double with two outs to set up Kim's two
run singles. So it's not I would say his season
has been super disappointing, but in the last couple of
weeks he has been he has been more solid than
(39:30):
he has been the majority of the year. But I
completely understand the frustration, and the Dodgers have a decision
to make between now and July thirty first, and whether
or not Michael Conforto's going to be on the team
or in some significant role moving forward.
Speaker 5 (39:46):
So we'll see how it plays out.
Speaker 7 (39:48):
But I understand the whole season hasn't been great, but
the last two weeks has.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
Been much better.
Speaker 6 (39:55):
Hey, I kind of agree with you, and I totally
understand that. You know, like today, yet he got a double. Okay,
that was great, but he had one double, but then
he had two hits.
Speaker 7 (40:07):
Baseball though, Shane, you're not going to get a hit
every time. You have to give him credit for extending
the inning. He's not Freddie Freeman, he's not Otani. He's
Michael Confordo who's been in the league for almost ten years.
So you just have to accept that.
Speaker 6 (40:25):
I get even at his best.
Speaker 7 (40:28):
Even at his best, he's not going to be you
know what ta Oscar Hernandez was last year for the Dodgers.
Thanks for the phone call, Shane, See you did not
make me regret that. And as far as the rubber game,
goes it originated in the sixteenth century in lawn bowling.
And do you think I knew that?
Speaker 5 (40:45):
No, I'm not. Vince Scully AI on.
Speaker 7 (40:48):
Google told me that it's an incredible technology.
Speaker 5 (40:51):
You might want to check it out. All right.
Speaker 7 (40:53):
That'll do it for us on Dodger Talk tonight. Thanks
to Colin Ye back at our Burbank Studios, Thanks to
Dwayne McDonald out here at Dodger Stadium, and thanks to
you for listening and not hearing. I did not say
Dustin ma is going to get traded. It's a possibility,
along with other names that have been rumored to.
Speaker 5 (41:13):
Be out there. See I listen, you just hear some
of you.
Speaker 7 (41:20):
Tyler Glasnaw is on the Mount tomorrow against Chris Paddock
Morongo Casino. Dodgers on Deck begins at noon, first pitch
at one ten. Ben Maller on Fox Sports Radio is
coming up next once again the final score from Dodgers Stadium.
The Twins beat the Dodgers ten to seven. Have a
great rest of your night and into your Wednesday. See
(41:41):
you
Speaker 5 (41:45):
Just on
