Speaker 6 (00:33):
Hell time, go to the su grab your phone to

And now your host of Dodger Talk, David Vasse.

Speaker 8 (00:47):
We are live at Dodger Stadium after the Blue Jays
come from behind and beat the Dodgers five to four.
This is Dodger Talk David vass Say with you until
six o'clock tonight on AM five to seven the LA Sports.
We have one line open right now, as you can imagine,
eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy. And look,

(01:09):
there's a lot of good, there's a lot of bad
and there's some ugly to today's game. The good is
the Dodgers take two out of three from the Blue Jays.
As far as the bad, well, some bad base running decisions,
in particular in the sixth inning with Sho Hao Tani
being thrown out at third base with Freddy Freeman at

(01:30):
the plate.

Speaker 7 (01:32):
When did the Dodgers become a running team?

Speaker 8 (01:34):
I mean, all of a sudden they decided to run
when Freddy Freeman's at the plate.

Speaker 7 (01:38):
That's the time.

Speaker 8 (01:39):
You don't want to run with Freddy Freeman at the plate.
Mookie Betts was thrown out in the first inning with
Freddy Freeman at the plate. Freddie hit a home run,
a go ahead solo home run which could have been
a go ahead two run home run. You want to
give Freddy Freeman every chance to hit. You don't want
to take the bad out of his hands. And Freddy

(02:01):
today drew two bases loaded walks and he also had
that home run in the first inning.

Speaker 7 (02:08):
The Dodgers, for the first time.

Speaker 8 (02:10):
Since nineteen eighty two, lose a game where they drew
ten or more walks and had ten or more hits.
That's not something that is easy to do, and certainly
since it hasn't happened since nineteen eighty two. That's not
something you see every day. And that ninth inning, you
got to give Alex Friedland a lot of credit because

(02:33):
on Wednesday afternoon he couldn't lay the bunt down. Today
he did and put runners in scoring position, the tying
run ninety feet away that the Dodgers couldn't get home.
In the ninth inning, Will Smith draws a walk show
Aotany had a good at bat, but a little over
zealous on that slider down in a way and he

(02:53):
struck out and Mookie Betts grounded out on a cutter.
A lot of head movement from Mooki in that played appearance.
So disappointing day for the Dodgers, and I feel like
on their six game homestand the Dodgers gave away two
games that they should have won. Wednesday afternoon against the Cardinals,

(03:14):
where Otani was extraordinary. One of the best played games
that you will ever see one single player ever play
in Otani pitching four scoreless innings, had eight strikeouts and
then hits go ahead two run home run, and the
Dodgers still lose because of the bullpen faltering late the

(03:36):
defense faltering late, and then today bad base running and
also the inability to come up with a key hit.
Twenty three base runners and the Dodgers only scored four runs.
The Blue Jays were begging the Dodgers to take this game.
They left sixteen men on base and were just one

(03:57):
for ten with runnerson scoring position. You heard Dave Roberts
talk about it. That eighth inning at bat by Michael Conforto,
he brought him up to pinch hit. He had a
three to one count and he popped up to the
catcher a pitch that was right in the middle of
the plate and Conforto fouled out. And that was that

(04:19):
was demoralizing in itself, and it felt like the Dodgers
were leaving the door open a little too long for
the Blue Jays, and they barged right through it. In
the eighth inning, Blake Trennon's sweeper not on point and
two sweeper to Vladimir Guerrell Junior was sent to center

(04:39):
field for the game tying home run, and then Blake
Trenning again tried to go to the sweeper and he
gave up the go ahead home run to the Blue Jays.
A back to back shot to Addison Barger and then
Alex Vesia. I would argue his slider is not his
best pitch. His fastball that plays up in the strike

(05:00):
zone is gives up the go ahead home run again
to Ernie Clement leading off the ninth inning, jumping all
over the first pitch. Sou Vesio is not sharp Wednesday afternoon.
Trinon has not been sharp ever since he came off
the IL. That's gotta be concerning. And you wonder now

(05:20):
if the Dodgers are considering even more giving Bobby Miller,
the relief pitcher, an opportunity to be able to have
a chance to pitch a meaningful inning in relief, to
see what they got with him. Because we've been talking
about this all season long, how the Dodgers'.

Speaker 7 (05:43):
Bullpen innings have been adding up.

Speaker 8 (05:45):
And I know they're a little uh skewed because the
Dodgers have had Otani star games and then they've had
to bring in somebody else they piggyback innings, But you
can't ignore the fact like guys like Jack Dryer, Alex Vessio,
Bank Casparius have been used quite a bit, and you
wonder if those innings are starting to catch up to them.

(06:08):
Not to mention the Dodgers pushing their relievers to as
full as they could last year in the postseason. I
mean the Dodger bullpen shoulder to burden you don't usually
see in the postseason, and when you do that the
following year, there's a cost. Michael Kopek's been on the

(06:31):
IL for the majority of the year. Evan Phillips, who
is not on the World Series roster, now needs Tommy
Johns surgery. Blake Trenan was out for two three months
with an arm issue. Brent Honeywell has not found a
team because he's got an arm issue. Anthony Bonda has
been good, Daniel Hudson retired. Alex Vesia has been the

(06:57):
best relief pitcher and most consistent relief picture. He's been unbelievable,
but has hit a little bit of a rough patch.
So that's the reason why you know, as they wait
for Tanner, Scott and Michael Kopek to come back, are
the Dodgers considering having Bobby Miller come up and see
what they got and whether or not they got a

(07:19):
fresh arm out of that bullpen eight six six nine
seven two five seventy is the phone number. Let's head
downstairs right now to hear from Blake Trining on sports
and at LA.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Man, you don't, I don't think you're look into home runs.
It's good swings and you know you give good hitters
pitches right down the middle, they're gonna do damage. Sometimes
we'll get away with making bad locations turn into outs,
and I mean they made me pay for it and
it cost us a game.

Speaker 9 (07:46):
So it's a little bit.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Frustrating for Chick four.

Speaker 10 (07:49):
Has he been toting off the dil execution list? What
do you think you've been searching for execution the last
when it comes to since.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
You've been off the ayle, honestly think my execution has
been really good. I've had some some tough hits through
which I mean to tip your hat to the hitter.
Today was lack of execution. Today's the first day of
l Like, my execution has been really poor. What's really
been frustrating for me outside of the last two outings
is the first batter walks haven't been good for me.

(08:14):
Today was better. Last outing against Toronto was really good too.
So as long as I'm I'm in the zone, I'm fine.
I just gotta be better with two strikes, and you know,
leaving pitches right down the middle isn't good.

Speaker 6 (08:25):
How do you feel about where your stuff has been
in these five games?

Speaker 11 (08:29):
Back?

Speaker 1 (08:31):
I thought my stuff today was great. It's just it's
a location thing. I mean, literally, as center cut as
you can throw them is where they hit them, so
can't be successful. The big legs start right down the middle.

Speaker 8 (08:42):
All right, there's Blake Trining. Vladimir Guerrero Junior hit a
flat sweeper, so Dia Barger and that won't get it
done for Blake Trining. Eight six, six, nine, seven two,
five seventy is the phone number Dodgers strand the base
is loaded three times today. Leave the door open for
the Blue Jays, and they took the opportunity to beat

(09:03):
the Dodgers today five to four. The Red Sox lost
to San Diego today, so the Dodgers' lead in the
NL West is down to two games. I will say this,
the Dodgers starting pitchers in this series did their job. Kershaw, Snell,
and Glass. Now when it combined six and sixteen and
two thirds innings allowed us three earned runs and at

(09:25):
twenty four strikeouts.

Speaker 7 (09:27):
So this today was on the bullpen.

Speaker 8 (09:31):
It's gonna happen, but you don't expect it from Blake
Trenin and Alex Vesia. The Dodgers fall to the Blue
Jays five to four, eight six, six, nine eighty seven
two five seventy is the phone number. We have a
full board a call, so let's go out to them. David,
who is at Dodgers Stadium today, You're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 7 (09:50):
Lead us off, DZ.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 7 (09:53):
Man.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
I am burning up, and it's not because I was
roasting in the load section today for the game. But
it seems like the Dodgers just keep doing these stupid
little things that cost them ballgames. For instance, first inning,
Pahz bobbles the ball out there in center, allows the
base runners to advance. Then you got Otani's feeling third

(10:19):
total brain fart with Freddy up there. And of course,
I mean Will Smith has been amazing. I mean, I
love Will Smith, but I really thought and he's been
flumping a little oh for thirteen whatever it was. He
had a three and oh count with the bases loaded,
with Freddie Freeman on deck, and he swings and pops

(10:39):
it up to right field on a three and oh count,
I just think that was a selfish at bat. I
just felt like, you know, work to count, You're better
than that. And then of course confordo, I mean three
and one cookie and he can't go forward. I mean,
the way to solve that problem to me, DV is

(11:00):
you put Tune Call and Dean and center until Edmund
gets healthy and you let Pahes and Tao play the corners. Because,
to be honest, I think it was a little premature
evacuation that Roberts did with Tao in the game, and
I think it cost him in at bat there. And
I don't think that happens if you've got a really

(11:22):
great fielding center fielder and keep our guys Paz and
Tao on the corners.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
I really appreciate you. I agree with you that you'd
love to hear your thoughts.

Speaker 7 (11:31):
Okay, David, thank you for the phone call. I agree
with you.

Speaker 8 (11:34):
It's a little I'm all in with Dave Roberts trying
to get a better outfield defense out there with a
lead laid in the game.

Speaker 7 (11:41):
But it was a little early for.

Speaker 8 (11:43):
Me in the eighth inning to take taoscar Hernandez out,
especially where you're holding on to a one run lead,
and quite honestly, Tao's been moving in right field a
lot better on this home stand than we have seen
him all season long. And you're right, I'm not gonna
say it was a self elfish at bat by will Smith.
He's one of the more unselfish players on this team.

(12:05):
It was just not the result that you wanted with
the bases loaded and one out in that situation, and
that was early in the game, in the second inning.
Eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to Levi, who is
at Dodgers Stadium today. Hi, Levi, you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 12 (12:24):
Hi, nice to talk to you. We were were just
leaving the game, and I guess to piggyback on that
prior caller. We're just frustrated and with Robert's decision making,
both with respect to taking Ko out of the game
way early, one of our best hitters, and then putting
up Michael Conforto, who doesn't seem to be able to
hit a beach ball nowadays when you really need that hit.

(12:46):
I would have rather seen Deane up there.

Speaker 8 (12:49):
Yeah, that's kind of the chain reaction right there. Levi,
I understand, and look, ta Oscar has not been one
of the Dodgers' best hitters this year, but I understand
what you're saying. He's been clut for the Dodgers for
the most part, and you know, I just feel like
he is starting to play a little bit better. And
Michael Conforto, he's been struggling ever since the trade deadline,

(13:12):
and that's kind of the chain reaction. When you take
him out and you have a Dean Pinch run for Taoscar,
You're gonna have a Confordo take that at bat.

Speaker 7 (13:22):
So look, all of that adds up.

Speaker 8 (13:25):
Yes, those might be real questions, and I'm not saying
those aren't good points. But if Blake Trenton does his job,
if Alex Vesia does his job, if the Dodgers don't
strand sixteen men on base, I don't think we're really
nitpicking this. It was more than just those things, and
I'm not putting this loss on Dave Roberts. The guys

(13:47):
have got to take some accountability for this too. Let's
go out to James, who is at Dodgers Stadium. Hi, James,
You're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Hey, Dave, listen I agree with you about the potential
over usage of guys like Vessia. His stuff hasn't looked
as sharp for a while, and Dave has leaned on
him a lot over the last two three seasons, and
I wonder if maybe that is catching up with Vessia

(14:17):
a bit. As for Trining, I mean, he's got the
stuff and I think the.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
Location will come. But my question to you is how.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
Much of today's loss do you think lies on the
Dodgers' hitters failing on situational hitting versus Dave Roberts calling
play calling, on allowing swings on three to zero counts
and steals. And I mean, I would never put Conforto

(14:47):
in to pinch hit because he's got to prove that he.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
Can hit that are in general before you bringing a
pinch hit.

Speaker 5 (14:53):
So what are your thoughts on You know, you just
said that you don't blame Dave, But to what degree
do you think this is on Dave versus on the
Dodgers hitters not executing.

Speaker 7 (15:04):
Hey James. Is Dave Roberts taking the at bats?

Speaker 8 (15:08):
Is Dave Roberts the one that had a three to
one count and flew out to right field? Or is
Dave in the seventh inning in the batter's box for
Michael Conforto.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
Dave was a career two seventy hitter, which is a
lot better than some of the Dodgers right now.

Speaker 8 (15:23):
Answer my question was he you want to blame Dave
Roberts for those things? He can only do so much. Yeah, Well,
I think the answer is pretty obvious, James. It's a
situation where, yeah, those are real questions. Why not put
the red light on Otani in that situation just to

(15:45):
eliminate any kind of confusion or poor decision making if
you don't want a guy swinging, Are you telling me
Dave Roberts is going to tell Will Smith not to
swing three to zero? I think he trusts Will Smith
for making the right decision, and sometimes you're going to
make it out as far as Conforto goes, I don't
know what people want from Dave Roberts in that situation.

(16:09):
If Confordo draws a walk or he has the right
the right swing and doesn't pop it up to the catcher,
nobody's bringing that at bad up.

Speaker 7 (16:19):
I hate to break it to you.

Speaker 8 (16:20):
Yeah, I'd rather have Michael Confordo at the plate than
justin Dean at this juncture of the season. But I
agree as well that it may be an inning too
soon to take ta Oscar Hernandez out of the game.
Eight six six seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Let's head downstairs again to hear from Alex Vesia, who

(16:41):
gave up a home run that turned out to be
the difference in the game and the ninth inning to
Ernie Clement on a first pitch slider.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 13 (16:50):
A fair slider and it was down on his own
and kind of got it, so oh or not? I
felt good and whatnot, And just one back.

Speaker 10 (16:59):
Bitch, you feel like overall you can execute that picture
the way you wanted it to or was it you
could do one of that a little bit lower?

Speaker 1 (17:05):
I mean you can. It's fifty to fifty. Man really
is kind of sick.

Speaker 13 (17:09):
It's like, so yeah, I put much weight onto it
and just kind of flush it onto the next one.

Speaker 7 (17:17):
Frustrating, is it?

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Tae yeh?

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Didn't the offense get all the way back in front.

Speaker 13 (17:22):
But to not be able to hold it once they
were able to tie? Oh yeah, it's I would say
it's pretty frustrating. I mean it's you know, we take
a lot of pride in the in the Wolfen and
for us to not get it in to day.

Speaker 10 (17:33):
So as team, hopefully it's been a couple game much traction,
just fort to go on a run that you guys
have been had time up. You guys are feeling too
close to.

Speaker 13 (17:43):
Were you talking about? Like what specifically are you talking about?

Speaker 1 (17:47):
Like the team?

Speaker 10 (17:47):
Yeah, team's sort of like winning.

Speaker 13 (17:49):
But I mean I thought we did great today. I
honestly like the offense was was really good. It's you
know open that you know, well, well we need to
get our.

Speaker 8 (17:59):
Stuff up, all right, There's Alex Vessia on sports Net
LA eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy
is the phone number. It just felt like Vessia knew
that that was not a well executed slider as soon
as it left his hand. You hear pitchers sometimes talk
about this oral Herscheiser has described this on the broadcast

(18:22):
as casting your pitch, and it seemed like Vesia casted
his slider on that pitch that, obviously Ernie Clement did
not miss for a go ahead home run to lead
off the ninth inning, and then Vessia was able to
mow down and get the final three outs without without
a hiccup. It was just a bad pitch at the

(18:43):
wrong time. Eight six, six nine, eight seven two five
seventy is the phone number. By the way, can I
just remind you that the Blue Jays are in first
place in the AL East for a reason. It's not
like the Dodgers blew a game to a bad team.
They were on the verge of sweeping the AL East
Division leaders. They're in first place for a reason as well.

(19:06):
And like I said, I feel like the Dodgers beat
themselves today and Wednesday, but the Cardinals are not a
very good team.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
The Dodgers should have won that game.

Speaker 8 (19:14):
They gave it away with some bad decisions and some
poor execution on defense. Similar to today, the caller brought
up earlier Andy pie Has dropping the ball in the
first inning, which allowed the first run to score. Rick
Monday talked about it. You don't just pick up the
baseball with your glove. You go with the glove in hand,
or you bare hand it. Those are things that add

(19:37):
up in one run games. And Miguel Rojas yesterday on
the morning edition of Dodger Talk talked about how that
separated the Dodgers last year beating the Yankees in the
World Series. Good base running, good base running decisions, doing
the little things, playing small ball, and playing good defense.

(19:57):
We have not seen the Dodgers do that at consistently
all season long. They've gone through stretches, but we haven't
seen it consistently, and the outfield defense has left a
lot to be desired for the most part this year.
Eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to Leon in Beverly Hills.

(20:18):
You're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 11 (20:19):
Hi, Leon, Hey Dave, how are you doing. I want
to talk a little bit about Otawni because he's great
of a player, as he's overwhelming with his talent and
all the you know, incredible numbers.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
He puts up.

Speaker 11 (20:31):
At times when you watch him in clutch situations, it
feels like he does not get a good at bat.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
It feels like he's.

Speaker 11 (20:36):
Lunging at the ball at times with two strikes. And
I just think back to the World Series. He did
not have really a good World Series and.

Speaker 7 (20:45):
He hurt his shoulder was separated.

Speaker 11 (20:49):
Okay, fair enough, but I mean, what do you what
are your thoughts on just his quality of that bat
in certain in these certain situations, particularly with men on base.
You know, I know he, I know, I know Leon.

Speaker 7 (21:00):
I'll say this, I know what you're getting at. I'll
say this.

Speaker 8 (21:02):
I believe last year Otani just silenced all the critics
when it came to him not being clutch. How many
times did he come up with walk off not only hits,
but home runs, walk off grand slam. That's the one
that stands out to me. He has a walk off
home run this year. I thought he had a really
good at bat in the ninth inning. He's human though.

(21:23):
He chased a pitch down and away, And you have
to give the Blue Jays young rookie Mason flew Hardy
a little bit of credit there.

Speaker 7 (21:32):
I think you have to.

Speaker 8 (21:33):
I think you have to apply to Tani for that
type of at bat. He extended that at bat. Unfortunately,
chased a bad pitch.

Speaker 11 (21:42):
But it's not just how that he chased it, it's
the way he looks chasing it. It's like, I don't know,
I feel.

Speaker 8 (21:48):
Like I look good when you chase a pitch like
that down in a way. But he laid off. How
many after he laid off about four of those during
that at bat and fouled off a couple of pitches
that were inside. So, honestly, Leon, if you're gonna poke
a hole in Otani's game today, it would be the
decision to try to steal third base with Freddie Freeman

(22:10):
at the plate and ending the sixth inning.

Speaker 11 (22:14):
All right, thanks, Dave, appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (22:17):
You don't like that answer, Huh.

Speaker 11 (22:19):
Well, I just feel like I I from the eye test.
For me, it's just like he just seems to not
come through at times in late innings situation.

Speaker 8 (22:27):
He's not gonna come through all the time, Leon, He's
not gonna hit a walk off every time. But I
feel like the rep was on him that he wasn't clutch,
and I feel like he was incredibly, incredibly clutch last
year and has been very good this year as well.

Speaker 7 (22:44):
And you brought up the World Series.

Speaker 8 (22:46):
He kind of lost me there because how could you
forget that he separated his shoulder, his left shoulder, which
he had to have surgery on stealing second base in
the first inning of game or in Game one of
the World Series.

Speaker 11 (23:00):
I forgot about that one.

Speaker 9 (23:01):
Thanks.

Speaker 8 (23:03):
Yeah, that's a big one to forget. But you remembered
all the other ones that he swung and missed on.

Speaker 8 (24:08):
Show hey, old Tani with number forty one and the
scoreboard now tied at one. Another example of show Hey
Otani delivering for the Dodgers that time, his eleventh leadoff
home run of the season. Wow Leon and Beverly Hills
Colin Yee coming right at you with that highlight of

(24:30):
Otani's home run to tie the game in the first inning. Unfortunately,
that's where the Dodger off installed after Freddie Freeman's home
run to give the Dodgers the lead in the first inning.

Daniels Jewelers own the Dream. Eight sixty six nine eight
seven two five seventy is the phone number. Obviously a
frustrating day for the offense. They had twenty three base

(25:13):
runners today, they left sixteen of them on base, one
for ten with runners in scoring position. They strand the
bases loaded three separate innings today, and they left the
door open for the Blue Jays to come back against
their bullpen. And we talked about the Dodger bullpen this year.
I guess the most concerning part of the fact is

(25:35):
how many home runs they have given up this season.
Blake Trening gives up back to back home runs in
the eighth inning. Alex Vesia gives up another home run
after the Dodgers tied it in the ninth inning. The
Rockies and Angels bullpens have given up sixty nine home runs.
The Dodger relievers have given up sixty five, the second

(25:57):
most of any bullpen to only the Rockies and Angels.
That's the concerning part the Dodger bullpen giving up these
home runs. Lad in games that changed the complexion of
winning and losing. And today two of their better relievers
from a year ago, in Vessia, their best reliever this season,

(26:18):
gives up a home run.

Speaker 7 (26:19):
So those are the concerning.

Speaker 8 (26:21):
Things that you hope get rectified by the time October
comes around. Eight six, six, seven, two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to Danny, who is
at Dodger Stadium today. Hi Danny, you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 4 (26:36):
Hi Damn, thanks for getting be on as always man.

Speaker 5 (26:41):
Doun game.

Speaker 4 (26:42):
But you know it's a great show, Dave. You're doing
a really good job hitting all the spots. And as
a line of nick kickings, if you had today, I
kind of just wanted to pile on that little bit.
It was a frustrating game to watch, definitely one who
should have won you After a couple of innings, I
thought they should have been up, you know, five or
six runs in the Europe by three and it was two.
So more runs of the sport on. You know there's

(27:02):
the Will Smith that bat the Conford to at pat.
You know, in the moment, they were frustrated to watch.
But what I didn't want to talk about day was
nine vivving And I know I'm super nippicking, and I'll
preface this by saying, you know, I'm an old school
tactical baseball man, and I love the sacrifice fun and
I think it should be the lives of worse than
it is and the doctor I'm actually done pretty big
top this year of you using the sack butt, but
I did not like it up and free Light did

(27:24):
it in that particular situation because you got a picture
on the mound. It's all over the place, I think
at that time he had fifteen pitches and Kenne were
balls and he could not find the strike zone. And
we got through their bullpen, we get to the weakest
part and the guys throwing balls over the place. We
got two runners on for them. Comes up in the
first pitch, he's dropping a bunt and they're giving away
and out. And I understand why why you would do

(27:45):
that there, But in my head, you know, take a pitch,
make him throw a strike, at least one strike before
you go for that sack. But because that picture is
all over the place at that time, you look terrible.
And to give him out that way. I know we
got runner of the scoring position, you got the big
bats coming up shortly after. But I just didn't like
seeing a freelom giveaway is at bat so easily in
that moment when that picture was walking guys and just
couldn't find the strike zone.

Speaker 7 (28:07):
Okay, Danny, I I think that's a good point. I was.

Speaker 8 (28:12):
I didn't have as big of a problem with him
getting both runners into scoring position with Alex Call coming
up and also Otani lurking in the hole. But I
understand what you're saying there, Danny, No doubt about it.
I think that's a fair point to bring up, no doubt.
Thank you for the phone call. Eight sixty six nine

(28:32):
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. That's
another great point. Why not have Hoffman throw Freeland a
strike before you ask him to lay down the sacrifice bunt?

Speaker 7 (28:42):
Fair point, But it's it's.

Speaker 8 (28:44):
Ironic that we're actually taking a call from somebody that
didn't like a sacrifice bunt when all we do on
this show is take phone calls about why Dave Roberts
doesn't play more small ball. So that was interesting and
entertaining for me, but fair question. Let's go out to
Santa Barbara. John, You're on Dodger Talk with David vasse Hi.

Speaker 7 (29:07):
John.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
Yeah, Hi, Dave. I just want to say this is
the best sports channel and the best sport talk show,
and you are the best host. Okay, So let's get
that out of the way first.

Speaker 7 (29:20):
All right, John, I love it. I love Santa Barbara too. John.
You're a great man.

Speaker 3 (29:25):
Well good, and you're welcome here anytime. Come on down. Now,
let's talk about the game. It was a close game,
we lost it. I don't see the big deal about that.
Let's talk about the fact we won the series against
a first place, really good team and we're still in
first place. I know San Diego won too, but it

(29:49):
was a good game. I mean, all those walks and
all those hits, those are just great things to be doing.
It's just a weird way it ended up with those
three home runs at the end against our best relief pitchers. Okay.
I don't know how to explain that, but it doesn't
happen very often, and it's not gonna happen much anymore.

(30:10):
And I don't think we have to worry about that
going down the line. Okay, but let's talk about one
thing that is a problem. Yeah, I don't think so.
I don't think Trying's going to give up another two
home runs in one inn and ever again in his career, probably,
So let's talk about one thing that is a problem.
We don't have a closer. Okay, we as we go forwards,

(30:33):
forget about this game. As we go forward, We've got
some big games coming up San Diego, s A Francisco.
You know, we've got a you know, we've got big
teams we've got to play, and we don't have a closer.

Speaker 8 (30:45):
And until that, not right now, John, But the closer,
our closer, or the Dodgers closer is on the il
right now, and that's Tanner Scott. And it feels like, well,
he actually told me he's ready to go. I believe
that Tanner Scott and possibly Michael Kopek will be activated
for Friday's series opener against the Padres. But I understand

(31:10):
what you're saying. Right now, it feels like the Dodgers
are drifting towards the ninth inning because they don't work backwards.
They're just playing match up baseball, and the ninth inning
isn't meant for everybody. Hey, John, I gotta run, But
thank you for the phone call. Eight six six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (31:29):
I feel like that's a great point too.

Speaker 8 (31:31):
The Dodgers have been mixing and matching, and they may
continue to do that when Tanner Scott comes back, but
they signed him for a reason, and it feels like
with the Dodgers not going out and getting a Joe
On Durant or a Mason Miller or somebody like that,
or Ryan Helsley, they're comfortable with Tanner Scott bean their

(31:52):
closer or Blake Trinin trying to round into that guy again,
and I believe Tanner Scott will be uh, we'll be
ready to go for the Padres series. All right, let's
check in with our guy, Jose Mota.

Speaker 6 (32:05):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Mota.

Speaker 8 (32:10):
All right, Jose, we have talked about it another game
we felt like the Dodgers should have won on this
homestand what stood out to you the most as far
as a pivotal play, pivotal at bat in this game.

Speaker 9 (32:25):
I'm gonna put it all as a unit on the offense,
way too many opportunities. Eric Glawer, who has at their
number for years, was pretty much out to have, you know,
to give up five or six runs. And I saw
some bad swings on good pitches and some bad swings
on bad pitches. So this, as much as it hurts
to see trying to do what he did, he is

(32:46):
not sharp. We know he's not ready for that any yet.
He's command his way off This falls on the offense
on decisions that were made and the fact that I
think you know, just pitch selection decisions in covering your
base and covering your your base. When I talk about
that as your zone base running decisions. Just we're not right.

(33:08):
I'm going to give it all on the offensive sign.

Speaker 8 (33:11):
Okay, yeah, I mean obviously they had twenty three base
runners and only scored four runs. We haven't seen a
Dodger team since nineteen eighty two draw ten ten or
more walks and have ten or more hits and lose
a game. But you know, the callers brought up Will
Smith's at bat in the second inning, Michael Conforto's at bat,
Dave Roberts shining a light on that one. I mean,

(33:34):
do you feel like there is one at bat or
one play? Oh tany trying to steal third with Freddy
at the plate. I mean it feels like those things
were just as big as as the macro of an
offense today.

Speaker 9 (33:48):
Oh that was that was pretty much right there with
Freddie Freeman. Let's been a hitter. Okay, catch has got
a great view of what third base. You just cannot
make a decision to go there. It's a bad baseball
play by Shohill Tony. And here the thing about show hey,
he always has the information on the picture. He actually
when there's like a pitching change, he goes to the
digout and gets all the information on pictures and timings

(34:09):
and how many looks and everything, but you have to
just say, you can have all this right now, but
this is not a good time to run. So I'm
gonna put the clamps on you. You're not gonna run.
And that's pretty much it. He knows that Freddy is
the guy that you wanted to play. Then he showed
it again today with the patients and the ball you know,
the balls he keeps hitting the other way, and that's

(34:30):
pretty much changed the whole momentum. That's why I say
it falls on the offense and on a particular play.
I'm gonna go right to show hey, and on Will Smith.
I can see sometimes we can lose a little bit
of your flow and your swing when you're not playing
every single day. He has not been playing every single day.
He's non excuse, but Will Smith has been going through
a little bit of a funk right now because he's
not on time. And I don't mind it. The real swing,

(34:51):
he just got to make a better swing. Like I said,
there's some very good pitches in which you take bad swings.
And the woman calforded, what I'm gonna question is take
another pitch. To me, he took another pitch in that situation.
And he's had some big walks, and obviously he's been
a contributor sometimes with a bat in the multi lately,
with some big up bats with walks, and I will
say that really stood out to me by certainly taking

(35:12):
the bat away from Freddie Freeman. And you can see Freddy.
I'm gonna say anything, but you can see the frustration
in him the way he actually walked hard and fast
forwards out dug out saying this is not a good
play and show he knows it.

Speaker 8 (35:24):
Yeah, obviously you don't take the bat out of Freddy's hands.
That happened twice. Mookie Betts got thrown out at second
base in the first inning. Freddy's solo home run could
have been a two run home run.

Speaker 9 (35:36):
He could have been I'm okay with that one. You
got to take a chance there with the guy in
them out and Freddy, you know, getting Freddy somebody in
scoring position. But the third base one is the one
with really it stands out to me the most.

Speaker 8 (35:50):
Jose Mota is joining us after the Dodgers give away
this game five to four. Jose said that in spring training.
The only team that can beat the Dodgers are the Dodgers,
and it felt like they beat themselves today, and they
beat themselves Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Speaker 9 (36:07):
In Cincinnati, where they could have swept. The same thing happened.
Decisions in the batter's box go back to you know
what happened. As you mentioned, we're against St.

Speaker 3 (36:14):
Louis.

Speaker 9 (36:14):
The base running into the fielding not all there, but
these are all things that need to happen now before
you face you know, the tougher teams and the toughest
part of the schedule. I'm not talking about teams about
five hundred records. I'm talking about the toughest part of
the schedule is what you have in front of you
when you are fighting the same first place and to
head onto the postseason. That's the toughest part of the
schedule because a lot of guys have not gone through it.
Most guys have gone through it, and this is where

(36:36):
you cannot change your game. But certainly without hiding anything,
they need to clean up and have more consistency on
the offensive side. When they won that game five, we
won a couple of nights ago. I went back to say,
this is the top again, that you have to learn
how to win because out slugging people like last night,
that's great, it's gonna happen once in a while, but
winning games like tonight like today would have been just
one of those where you say, Okay, they're bad, they're consistent.

(36:58):
Some good decisions are being made, so now you've got
to put them behind you beat. He did come into
this series with some doubts after losing Saint Louis the
other day because Toronto came in hot from Colorado. But
you beat Toronto in the series. Not good enough? That's why. Well,
you would win the first two games in a series
like forget about the sweep, play your best game the
last game to have a chance to sleep. If you don't,

(37:20):
there's exactly what happens, Dave.

Speaker 8 (37:22):
All right, Hose before I let you go, we saw
in Tampa Kevin Cash intentionally walk Otani to face Mookie Bets.
We saw Schneider do it twice in this series. Do
you believe that's a trend that's going to continue until
Mookie Bets proves that he can be consistently the old
Mookie Bets. I know Mookie's delivered more times than not

(37:44):
in those situations. But the question is whether or not
managers are going to continue.

Speaker 9 (37:49):
To do it now, and why shouldn't they. I mean,
Mooki looks a little bit better at home plate now,
his best getting through his own little bit more. He's
quicker and he line drives. But they or not, I'm
going to in fact, they're going to chance give it
the Dodgers that go ahead, run with Atani on bass
and take a chance on Mooki, and he's got to
be ready for it. The main thing is for Mukia

(38:09):
is don't try to make the moment bigger than it is.
I know there's revenge in mind and payback and things
like that, but you gotta stay within yourself to make
sure that you put out your best swim because it's
going to keep happening more often, as I mentioned here
a couple of nights ago. Yes, be ready for it.

Speaker 8 (38:23):
All right, Jose, We'll see you in Anaheim tomorrow. Thanks
a lot for checking in. Okay, there he goes Jose Mota,
part of the Spanish radio broadcast. Before we say good night,
I promised an update on Tommy Edmund. He was such
a key part of the Dodgers second half last year
won the NLCSMVP, but just hasn't resembled that player because

(38:46):
of the right ankle that has been sprained three different times.
And the Dodgers now are going to give Tommy Edmund
the a longer period of time to see if that
will address him tweaking that ankle, that right ankle seemingly
every two weeks. Here's what Dave Roberts had to say

(39:07):
as far as the plan for Tommy Edmund.

Speaker 14 (39:09):
Tommy's hanging in there. He's he's, uh, it's gonna take
some time. I think, you know, we just got to
make sure once we get him back again, we can't
you know, have a you know, recurring situation of the
of the twisting of the ankle. So it's probably going
to be sometime in September early September, and you know,
but he's doing okay, he's he's working his tail off

(39:31):
to get back.

Speaker 7 (39:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (39:32):
So that means that Tommy Edmund is not going to
be playing in the six games against the Padres in
the month of August if he's not returning until the
middle of September, So the Dodgers won't have Tommy Edmond
next weekend against the Padres. They won't have Tommy Edmund
in two weeks in San Diego against the Padres. I

(39:53):
saw Tommy earlier this morning. He was keeping the arm active,
but he was thrown from one knee and the dog
and Tommy Edmond. There's only so much treatment you can
do on an ankle to try to prevent it from
being resprained. As you know, even if your kids play
ayso and they sprain their ankles, the more you sprain it,

(40:13):
the more susceptible susceptible it is to spraining again.

Speaker 7 (40:18):
So he's probably gonna have to wear.

Speaker 8 (40:20):
An ankle brace along with his right ankle being taped up.
That's just the reality of it, all right. That'll do
it for us on Dodger Talk today. Tomorrow, the Dodgers
will be back in action down on the five Freeway
in Anaheim. Yamamoto, who has had eight days rest, will
be on the mound for the Dodgers. He's ten and

(40:40):
seven with an ERA of two point fifty one, going
up against Jose Soriano, who is seven and nine with
an ERA of four Morongo Casino. Dodgers on Deck begins
at five thirty tomorrow with first pitch at six thirty eight.
Thanks to Colin Ye back at our Burbanks Studios, thanks
to Dwayne McDonald out here Dodger Stadium, and thanks to

(41:01):
you for listening.

Speaker 7 (41:03):
In case you missed any.

Speaker 8 (41:04):
Of the show, you can find it on the iHeartRadio app.
By the way, great calls today, great points brought up
by you, great observation. So a really good all around
Sunday Dodger Talk. Wish it would have ended better for
the Dodgers as they fall to the Blue Jays five
to four.

Speaker 7 (41:21):
Have a great rest of your Sunday. Be safe, We'll
talk to you tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (41:25):
See them sometime the
