Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this team is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
This team is really becoming a family. Let's not play
one on too, Let's bend.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
I love ing you guys after the show, just thank you, give.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Me are your attention, your fires.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
This is world champion, Dodger world championing for a small
salt time they get a people what they want to die.
Speaker 5 (00:24):
To in a row two is special.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm like, yeah, it's not a headache.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
One of a con.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
This ball gone.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
You ready to go? Held, go to South, grab your
phone to get in on the show called eight six
six nine eighty seven two five seven and go to
the show. And now your host of Dodger Talk, David Vasse.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Welcome to Dodger Talk David Vasse live at Dodger Stadium
until eleven o'clock tonight. A little bit after we're taking
your phone calls at eight six six nine eight seven
two five seventy. We will hear from Clayton Kershaw in
a moment. We have phone lines open, like I mentioned,
and certainly a big night for the Dodgers as they
(01:08):
beat the Padres three to two and now are tied
in the NL West with the Padres for first place,
and more importantly, are just one win away from winning
the season series against San Diego. Lost in all this,
we'll get to it in a moment what happened tonight,
but lost in everybody's hysteria that the Dodgers were having
(01:33):
an epic collapse and look not ideal to blow a
nine game lead, but there have been extenuating circumstances. Nonetheless,
the Dodgers have won six of the first eight meetings
against the Padres this year, and there is something to
be said about winning big in your own division, and
(01:54):
that's what the Dodgers have done this year. The Dodgers
are twenty and seven now against West opponents. That is
huge to try to help you win a division, especially
now since we're talking about a division race, since the
Dodgers and Padres now are tied for first place in
the NL West. Eight six six seven two five seventy
(02:17):
is the phone number. Jose Moto will join us at
ten point fifty, But we want to head downstairs right
now to hear from Clayton Kershaw. You know, it's always
it always makes me laugh how a lot of people
forget about Kershaw and count him out the last few years,
and all he does is go out there and empty
(02:38):
the tank and compete and out compete everybody. And that's
what has allowed him to have seven wins this year,
to have our ELAF three, and to go six innings
tonight and allow just two hits and one run. There
is something to be said about that that can't be
measured in any pitching lab. Sat downstairs right now to
(03:01):
hear from the future Hall of Famer.
Speaker 6 (03:03):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
It was a good night. I think my slider was
better tonight. I was able to throw for strikes a
little bit more, still falling behind too many hitters overall,
but thankfully my sliders had a little bit more bite
than it has the last few games, and able to
get some foul balls, and they hit some balls hard
on the ground, so you know, Freeland made some great plays.
Freddy made some picks, so had the defense pick me
(03:26):
up there too, which is always huge. And yeah, they're
a team that doesn't strike out a lot. You know,
they worked account they have good at bats, so you
just kind of you can't really let off the gas.
You just got to keep going one through nine. They
have a good lineup, especially at post trade deadline, so
you just got to make pitches.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
You compete, So I has to think the same.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
But is it different when you aren't going into a
game like today, you guys are game back in the
division glass four straight and just looking to kind of
get the team as a whole back on track.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
I mean, I think, I think when you've done this,
you know, as long as we have, it's August now,
you know, you try and treat every day the same,
but and then hopefully the situation just helps magnify everything,
you know. So it's a game in August. Obviously it's
not not that huge a deal, but you know, the
way we were going, you know, it felt like a
big game for us, and thankful that, thankfully we got
(04:19):
to win tonight.
Speaker 7 (04:20):
It's about game while the game kind of game you guys.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Lost over the last lease is just kind of serving
as that what we said got.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
To the board.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, it's hard to say
because you don't want to put too much merit in
us losing a bunch of games. You know, I don't
think that's who we are, So I don't want to
say that. You know, hey, we're reset now, you know,
I think I think we were fine. You know, I
think we just played some bad games and I think
we're we're fine moving forward. You know, our guys are
going to continue to throw the ball well. You know,
we're gona get big hits like Tao did tonight and
(04:53):
just go from there.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
You guys, stuff a little.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
To actually here this last time the team went to
what do you guys have.
Speaker 8 (05:01):
To do to cheat.
Speaker 4 (05:03):
That up with? What was the boy last time came?
Speaker 5 (05:07):
Yeah, Months is a big part of our lineup obviously.
He he always has a professional a bat and you know,
hits the ball hard, his the ball over the fence,
takes his walks, plays a good defensive third. So I
mean it's not easy to replace that.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
You know.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
It's just everybody can't try to do more than they're
capable of. Just kind of stay in your lane and
you know, Free and Miggy and you know, some of
these other guys that are going to play in field
will step up for us like they're capable of, and
we'll be good, all right.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
There's Clayton Kershaw in the postgame press conference after the
Dodgers pull into a first place tie with the San
Diego Padres three to two, a couple of things to
unpack from what Kershaw said right there. Number one, I
love that he's not going to give the Padres or
San Diego any satisfaction to say a game in August
(05:55):
against the Padres was a huge game or a huge win.
He did contradict himself, and I know he's trying to
protect his team. You can't tell me the Dodgers are
fine when coming into the game tonight they were twelve
and twenty two. You can't tell me you are fine.
You are not fine when you have close to the
(06:16):
same record as the Rockies over the course of that
period of time, the last six weeks, you were not fine.
And I do agree with him that this game meant
more for the Dodgers than it did beating the Padres
or beating anybody else, because they had lost four in
a row. They just got embarrassed in Anaheim. They lost
(06:38):
a game the last time they were at Dodgers Stadium
this past Sunday that they should have won. So this
was more important for the Dodgers, for those guys in
that dugout to hold on to a game like this
because they have not been winning one running games and
for all of you, Dave Roberts haters, are you tonight
(07:00):
to congratulate him or celebrate him for navigating the last
nine outs of the game tonight, because he did a
really good job and it was obviously a great group
game plan that he executed from the seventh inning on when,
especially in the eighth inning, when he brought in Alex
(07:23):
Vesia to get out the bottom third of the order
and it didn't go as plan. He hit both Iglesias
and Croninworth. He did give up a sacrifice bunt to
Freddy Fermin to move those guys into scoring position. He
should have struck out Fernando Tattis Junior, but for whatever
reason first base umpire Brennan Miller doesn't know uh or
(07:45):
isn't clear on what a check swing or not check
swing is, Fernando Tattis Junior should have been struck out instead,
Vesia walked him and that loaded the bases and you
got a sacrifice five from Luisa Rise to make it
a one run game. And that's how Big Taaskar Hernandez's
home run in the seventh inning was. So what does
(08:08):
Dave Roberts do? He brings in Blake Trining for one guy,
Manny Machado, who he has handled pretty well over the
course of the last year. Now, I will say this,
the first pitch Trying threw Machado was a flat sweeper
center cut as they like to say down in those dugouts,
(08:29):
and Machado missed it. I'm sure he's thinking about it.
I'm sure he's gonna have nightmares about it tonight because
he should have sent that to the San Gabriel Mountains
and instead he popped it up. And that was a
huge miss by Manny Machado, who was over for tonight
with a strikeout. So then after that we all think, Okay,
(08:50):
he brought in Blake Trining, he's only going to he
only threw one pitch. He's bringing him back out for
the ninth inning. No, because he had to bring in
a Diaz. He's thinking about using trynin tomorrow and possibly Sunday,
so he's not bringing in Trnen, who was not on
point really in that at that one pitch to Machado.
(09:11):
He brings in Alexis Das to face Bogarts, Merrill and Loreano.
Daz can only get two outs and then Mike Shilt
playing chess over there. You know the game that managers
play has Ryan O'Hearn on the bench. You don't think
Dave Roberts knows that that's the reason why he had
(09:33):
Jack Dryer ready, and Jack Dryer did his job tonight.
So for all the Dave Roberts haters out there, we
have phone lines open if you want to celebrate him
actually maneuvering the last nine outs and the way he
managed tonight showed you that the Dodgers wanted to win
this game. No matter what they say. We all know
(09:55):
it's not Game seven of the World Series, but certainly
the Dodgers needed to win this game because if they didn't,
they would have been two games back, the Padres would
have had all the momentum going into tomorrow, and the
Dodgers probably wouldn't have been feeling great about themselves after
losing five in a row, and the Padres would have
had won their sixth in a row. So don't try
(10:17):
to tell me this is just another game in August, please,
you're insulting all of our intelligence. Eight six six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. By
the way, I just want to remind everybody that it's
that time of year, right Colin Yee. I'm sure you
have the message that I started to send out yesterday.
(10:38):
There is no tomorrow? All right, Danny, who is at
Dodgers Stadium tonight? You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, Danny.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Doing great?
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Dave?
Speaker 9 (10:47):
Thanks for getting me on. There is no tomorrow that
time of the year. And how about that curse. That
guy's pretty good man. I really like what you said
he raises the intensity level of the team because that's exactly.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
What he does.
Speaker 9 (11:02):
He's been doing it for years and he's still doing it.
And today's game it just felt different than you know,
the last the last couple of weeks. Right away you
could feel it. They were in control. Even when they
went down. The game just felt different. And I'll tell
you what, Dave. I like to watch the pitchers warm
up and the bullpen, the starting pitchers. You know, I
try to get there as much as I can. And
Kershall looked incredible in his warm up today, and I
(11:24):
know that doesn't always translate, but today it did. I mean,
he was so on point. He was hitting will Smith
glove every time Will Smith. You can see he was
into it from the moment he took them out of
the bullpen.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
It was on man and he was so good tonight.
Speaker 9 (11:38):
And you know, is he gonna retire day? Because right now,
I mean he's not just good. They need him and
he's pitching incredible.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, why does everybody want him to retire? He's better
than half the pitchers in the league. Why would he retire?
Speaker 9 (11:54):
Exactly? Why would he retire? I mean, after you got Momono,
he's the next guy out. I mean, he looks fantastic tonight.
And yeah, Dave Roberts is a great jockey, and give
us do that game. That was really scary. And you
know what, da, this is the first time I've seen
him in person. He looks nasty. Man like his delivery is.
He looks really deceptive.
Speaker 10 (12:13):
He looks really right.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Come on, Danny, that's overstatement. I'm happy he got the
two outs. Uh, he did get Loriano on a strikeout.
I'd like to see more of it. It seemed like
his adrenaline was up a little bit given the task
of pitching in the ninth inning. But nasty, I would
say Mason Miller was nasty, not Alexis Diaz. Tonight. Thank
(12:36):
you for the phone call. Appreciate it. Eight six six nine, eight, seven,
two five seventy is the phone number, by the way.
Speaking of the Dodger bullpen and Blake Trinan, Blake Trinan
had all of the relievers in a circle earlier this
afternoon before the relief pitcher started getting into their throwing programs,
and it was Blake Trinan in the middle of that circle,
(12:59):
the lead of the Dodger bullpen that had a message
for the Dodger bullpen. Not sure what that is or
if we'll ever know, but something to take note of that.
Blake Tryning took it upon himself. Everybody wants a team meeting.
You got your meeting out there in left field earlier today,
Blake Trning with the bullpen. Let's go out to Ken
and Newport Beach. You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing?
(13:21):
Are you calling to to sing the praises of Dave
Roberts Ken.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Well, I was worried when he put the rookie in
at the end of the game, but I'll put you
what it worked and uh it was one of the
better games that he's ever managed. But I have a
new favorite Game.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Five of the World Series last year either huh oh.
Speaker 10 (13:40):
Okay, yes, of course I did. My new favorite player
is Manny Machado.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Thank you, Manny. Dodgers only had four hits, but that
error was the biggest moment of the game.
Speaker 10 (13:51):
Thank you Manny.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Yeah. That started the third inning rally that allowed the
Dodgers to not only tie the game, but to score
the go ahead run on a sack fly by Mookie
Betts and a groundout to the right side by shoe Heotani.
I didn't think Machado needed to die for that ball.
Can It felt like he was just trying to do
too much.
Speaker 10 (14:13):
Oh, I agree, I agree it was. It was a
bad play and it made the difference, and it makes
me very happy when we needed this game and Kershaw
was amazing, one of the best games I've seen him
pitch in a long time.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Ok, thank you, Ken, I appreciate it. Eight sixty six
nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
I will say this. The Dodger defense has been shaky,
to say the least, over the course of the last
six weeks, but there was some good defense tonight, especially
by Freddie Freeman. In the third inning, he robbed Luisa
(14:49):
Rise of a base hit with two outs and Kershawn
Freddy Freeman hooked up a few different times tonight, with
Freddie making the play and tossing it to Clayton Kershaw. Look,
I'm a sentimental guy. That's why I love baseball.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
When I saw that happen three different times tonight, and
especially in that third inning, I'm thinking Hall of Famer
to hall of famer right there, and two of the
steadiest guys you can ever find that usually find a
way to contribute in a big way, And Freddie Freeman
did with the glove tonight, and Clayton Kershaw certainly did
on the mound. Going up against this lineup which had
(15:25):
started to find its footing, winning five in a row,
Kershaw cooled them off in six innings tonight. And I
also thought another big play was Kershaw getting Luisa Rise
to ground into an inning ending double play in the
sixth inning. Four six three eight six six nine eight
seven two five seventy is the phone number. We're gonna
(15:47):
take a time out here on Dodger Talk. When we continue,
we'll take more phone calls at eight sixty six nine
eight seven two five seventy. We'll get you an update
on Tanner, Scott and Kirby Yates. We had a chance
to talk to Brock's start and yes, Max Mounsey is
on the injured list. He is going to be out
for some time with a Grade one strained right. Oh bleak.
(16:11):
The Dodgers don't have that funky Mounsey for a while.
Alex Frielan got the start at third base. Maybe when
Tommy Edmond and key Y Hernandez return, Miguel Rojas get
some time at third base. But the Dodgers are going
to be without Max Monsey. As I warned you last
night and this morning, it came unfortunately true. Max Mounsey
(16:32):
on the IL no timetable set for his return, but
the Dodgers pull into a first place tie tonight, beating
the Padres three to two on a five to seventy

Speaker 6 (16:59):
Saying, one out, nobody on won one ten.
Speaker 10 (17:02):
That swung on a well hit tape to slight right center.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
That ball is god.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
It's a home run per Taoscar Hernandez, and it's three
to one.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Dodgers taiy Oscar with his nineteenth home run of the year.
He got that ninety nine mile a hour heater up
on the zone and drilled it the other way, and
the Dodgers had a run in the seventh That was
a huge insurance run, a home run by Tioscar Hernandez
in the seventh inning off of Jeremiah Estrada, and the

on a night. The Dodgers cool off the Padres and
snap their five game winning streak and the Dodgers snap
their four game losing streak with a three to two
(18:21):
win tonight and snell Zilla on the mount tomorrow night
at Dodgers Stadium. Let's check in with our guy, Jose Mota.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Mota.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
All right, Jose, A lot of twists and turns to
this game. But Clayton Kershaw stepped up as only Kershaw
could step up tonight.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Dave, you know what I'm gonna I gonna agree with
Kershier and with this message. I know you're like, they're
not five or twelve to twenty one. Here's Curser's message. Okay, yeah,
the Wrecker says one thing well, and he really as
a veteran player, you're actually portraying and then saying, hey listen, man,
whatever the record says, we believe in what we have
in here. And that is the message I wanted the
(19:06):
fans to know. Now is you know very well more
than most people inside. It's not the same the intensitor say,
we got to play better. I am the guy you
got to go with. I'll put the blame on myself
if I need to, but I kind of like the
message saying, hey man, you know what, he's not going
to be able tomorrow. We know we have to pick
it up a little bit more. I think this is
the right message for his team is to feed off
(19:28):
of it, knowing that the talent is there, and it's
almost a message of we expect way more. It is here,
let's go out there and get it done. But I'll
tell you something else about Clayton Kershaw. Kursher has such
great situational awareness, and I'll tell you why. He understands
not just the whole environment and you know, being beh
one game, but the Potters were a team that comes in.
(19:49):
It doesn't strike out the Potters first pitch this season
against anybody, everybody three thirty eight average, five thirty eight slugging,
so Kersh and all that stuff that he does on
his own, the dry throws and all the princes and visualization.
He made every single first pitch count and he got
one up in his own and he's human and Loreno
(20:09):
made him pay. But that's what I'm talking about. It
we talked about swings and throwing out scouting reports, how
about concentrated on that one pitch a first pitch against
the team. And that's also Dave. No intendencies, no tendencies
for a team what they do, and pay attention to that.
Don't worry about it. If I get the two strikes,
what am I going to be? No? No, he pitches
one pitch at a time. He's a very hard crititi
(20:30):
on himself, and I really admire the fact that he
was on the mount tonight.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
Strike one the biggest pitch. He always talks about it,
and certainly that was big for him tonight to get
through six innings and only throw seventy six pitches. How
about Dave Roberts managing this game with urgency. You could
say all you want, Jose or kersh Er whoever else.
Dave Roberts knew that they had to get this game
and manage with urgency. The way he matched up for
(20:57):
the last six to seven outs of this game.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I mean, you know, this is what hitting the bottom
does for you. You got to go out there and think
outside of the box. I mean, and no matter why,
you're going to be as good as your players. The
Weavers coming in and did doesn't do the job. We'll
be talking about das and why ideas and why not
trying it right. So it's just you're gonna be as
good as your players, You're going to be as a
hitting coach as good as your hitters, and so forth.
It's just the way the gain. That's the nature of
the game. But you got to also have the guts
(21:21):
to go. This is the way I feel right now,
this is what I'm going to go with. We see
an alex Evata that's not thit on the ball with
confidence right now, we know we're blaying Lake Trenton stands
right now in terms of what he is in command
and issues and usage and thirteen games in a row coming.
So yeah, I mean, say Dave Roberts did would have
needed to do to think to put his team in
a better situation to win, knowing that the Dodgers have
(21:42):
not been very good in one wrong games as of late,
and today was one where the urgency came up and
somebody needed to go out there and get the job done.
And as important for Diaz is we know there's going
to be some activations coming here in that bullpen, but
he's been tweaking some things in that bullpen by being
a little bit shorter with that arm and having more
breaking that breaking ball and almost like we call sometimes
like a lazy arm that he has sometimes so the
(22:03):
ball doesn't stand his own as much and doesn't carry
in ineffectively. They are very not suggesent tonight and making
sure that things a little bit tighter from a sinker
to a slider.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
How about in the third inning, Hose, That's where the
Dodgers were able to not only tie the game, but
take the lead on not even a RBI bashid it
was Otani doing the right thing, hitting the ball to
the right side, and then Mookie Betts with a sacrifice fly,
but it all was set up by back to back
singles by CONFORDA and Freeland, and then maybe the key
(22:35):
play of that inning where Miguel Rojas is trying to
sacrifice bunt but many Machado trying to do too much.
What was Machado doing right there? And how big of
a play was that in the third inning?
Speaker 2 (22:48):
It was huge? Starting with CONFORDO is that bat in
the blue bat? Keep the blue bat? I think I
like the result with that one. And then Freelom, the rookie,
I mean, just go out there calling and does a job.
Now mcguero has knowed his job is to go out
there and butt. This is where you don't play about
and you don't worry about it. If I open up
first base Oltani. This is not about Otani anymore. This
is not about ATONI has never been about all tis
about the team. You bump the ball money, my chitle
(23:09):
tried to do too much. I mean, out of ten times,
how many times is my child are going to make
that play right? And but you took your chances, and
look what happened. You got rewarded, as you mentioned earlier
in the show, Dave, and that's why you got to
go out there and keep playing the super ball, maximize
every opportunity to play with the same urgency in the
third inning because you don't know where the opportunities are
going to come again as you would in the seventh
to race inning. And that's what happened there. Showi Otanian
(23:32):
that a bat cutting things down. You know the failures
he had as a late against lefties and against righties
in those type of situations, and that's what he needed
to put the ball in play somehow and make it happen.
So that was well played. And hopefully this is not
going to be just because of the potters or this
series of this game. They need to continue play this
topic game the rest of the season and into October.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
I thought on the flip side Jose for the Padres,
Mike Shildt was managing with urgency as well. He was
down in this game. He rings in Jeremiah Estrada. I
know it's a bullpen game, but he used them for
an inning and two thirds and then he brings in
Mason Miller. So Tawny Betson Freeman got a look at
Mason Miller in a game that they were losing in
(24:13):
the eighth inning.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Not a bad thing. I think it's a good thing
for both sides. I mean, you know, obviously, when you
have five closers in your staff, you got to go
out there and pick your spots and know who's going
to try to neutralize Houme. Hopefully it'll play well for
these guys now that to get a look at him,
his fastball is running, not just one on one, one
O two. He had some run on it, and hopefully
the guys will take some notice. Some Miller, who also
threw a lot of breaking balls for gotta throws out hard.
(24:36):
There's a lot of spinning because it's been working on
that pitch. We've got try to get ahead and things
like that. But we know my show is going to
use everything. He's been doing it since back in May,
no matter what. But you know, the intensity is there.
You got to go out there and maximize whatever you can.
You know, the strakehouses eventual need to be cut down.
But it's a good thing. We can see a lot
of guys out of that bullpen today and hopefully they'll
(24:56):
translate into good things. Uh, you know, it's got five
against him the next on games.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
All right, Jose, thanks for checking in. We'll talk to
you tomorrow night, snow Man. Yep, Blake's now tomorrow night
on the mound for the Dodgers going up against Dylan Cease.
Eight sixty six nine eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Dodgers beat the Padres tonight three to
two and are in a first place tie with the
San Diego Padres. Let's go out to Santa Barbara. John.
(25:24):
You're on Dodger Talk live from Dodgers Stadium. Hi John,
Day Day.
Speaker 6 (25:30):
Okay. Let me start by just reminding everybody that this
is the best sports talk show there is and you're
the best host Okay. And on top of that, the
Dodgers are by far the best team, and I'm in
top to bottom all the way from the ownership down
to the bat Boys. Okay, so hey, I worry that
(25:52):
boys are great. A little bit of a streak there, okay,
but they definitely got the best coach. Okay. I think
it would be correct to call him a magician, but
he is. He's more like a zen master. Kind of
reminds me a little bit of the uh of the
zen Master at the Lakers. I don't want to use
(26:13):
names or compare people.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Uh, Phil Jackson was great and Dave Roberts has won
two World Series, but their personalities are so different. John.
But yeah, well I appreciate all those compliments, and I
think I know what you're getting at. Dave Roberts a
little underappreciated.
Speaker 6 (26:29):
Well, he's just he's just a great leader. I mean,
he's got he's got everything, he's got character, he's he's
a great person, and he's a he's a genius. Okay.
Just look for instance, what he's done, what he's done
with the pitching situations that he's been involved in over
the last couple of years. You know, all those bulleten games,
(26:52):
all those all those underlie.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
On hold, John. The next time a Dave Roberts hater
calls in, I need you on hold, so I I
could conference you in and you could put them down.
All right, you'd be ready for me when I have that.
Thanks for calling in, appreciate it. How about that? Yeah,
there we go, John, John loves everybody. Eight six six
nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
(27:16):
Dodgers beat the Padres tonight three to two. And speaking
of Dave Roberts, remember the last time the Dodgers and
Padres saw each other, Dave Roberts and Mike Shilt went
at it against each other, and tonight was the first
time they have seen each other since those events transpired.
And both men, both managers, as managers usually do, the
(27:38):
first game of every series, go out and exchange lineup
cards before the game. The next two games, the bench
coaches go out there, But the first game, managers go
out there. And those two went out there, and I
was watching them very closely. They did not shake hands
right away. They were talking to the other umpires, kind
of some small talk there, and then ah, all right,
(28:01):
a little handshake there. It was icy. I'm gonna call
it icy. I felt the cool breeze all the way
up here in the press box. But no shoving match
right there. They kept it classy. But yeah, that happened
before the game tonight as well as far as before
the game goes. The Dodgers placed Max Munsey on the IL.
(28:23):
No word on when he's going to return, but when
you strain your oblique, it's a while. So the Dodgers
are going to have to navigate without Max Munsey. Good
thing they have guys named Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and
Shoho Tani, Will Smith, Teoscar Hernandez and hopefully get Tommy
Edmond and Keik Hernandez back in the first week or
(28:44):
so of September. But they're gonna have to do this
without Max Munsey going forward. No return in sight right now.
Dave Roberts said it's not a season ending injury, but
as you know, obliques can be fickleed. This kept Mounsey
out not weeks last year, it kept him out months,
so we'll see when he returns. We did have a
(29:06):
chance to talk to Brock Stewart, who was placed on
the IL just a few days ago after experiencing pain
in his right pitching shoulder. As you know, brock Stewart
was the acquisition the Dodgers made it the trade deadline
to help reinforce their bullpen. Here's what brock Stewart had
to say earlier today about the injury and how optimistic
(29:28):
he is in returning.
Speaker 7 (29:30):
Started feeling a little something, probably during the Cardinals series,
and then I wanted to give it a couple of
days to see, you know how I responded, and then
had one outing against the Blue Jays and you made
it through that outing just fine, but catch play the
next day, I just wasn't feeling very comfortable. So yeah,
I just wanted to say something now as opposed to
waiting until September and then you know, being out all
(29:52):
of September and then potentially the playoffs. So if I
can knock it out in a few weeks now and
get back to help out the team leading up to
the player off, so that it's great, That's that's the
that's the plan for sure. What we saw was just
a little fluid in the bursa in my shoulder, just
a little inflammation in the cuff, and got a couple
of shots to help calm it down, and the shots
(30:14):
are working so far, and yeah, just see how I
respond from the shots the next few days, and see
how I respond with the focused treatment that we're doing
in the training room. And I think the plan as
of now is like no throw for a week and
then build up and think it'll take a few weeks
to be back in games. But uh, you know, obviously
(30:35):
nothing I haven't been through before, unfortunately, But you know,
timelines are great and everything, and plans are great and everything,
but I still like to take everything one day at
a time, no matter if I'm healthy in the you know,
from earlier this season up until this point, took it
when day at a time, and I'm not gonna do
anything different now. Just take everything one day at a
time and try to put my best foot forward and
(30:56):
attack the rehab. And you know, the only thing on
my mind is getting back in helping the team, So
I'm gonna do my best.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
Brock Stewart, by the way, last week had two injections,
one a quarter zone injection to get the inflammation down
in his right shoulder, the other PRP injections. So you
heard from Brock right there. He seems optimistic that he
caught this in time and didn't make it worse, and
is hopeful that he could return in mid September and
(31:25):
help the Dodgers in the postseason. Now, earlier today, Tanner
Scott threw to hitters. That was encouraging. He hit ninety
eight miles an hour today and certainly is optimistic he
can help the Dodgers. He actually told me if he
could press a button to activate himself, he would, but
it's not up to him when the Dodgers activate him.
He's just really eager to get this going. So here
(31:48):
was Tanner Scott after we saw him throw to hitters today,
and here's what Tanner had to say about his return.
Speaker 11 (31:56):
Every day, you're trying to work on something, You're trying
to get better. You don't want to you don't want
to stay where you're at. You want to keep you
want to keep getting better. I mean, you try to
say the same game changes on you. So, uh yeah,
it's it's it's been good. I mean, it sucks that
I'm not playing right now, but it's been good getting
my delivery back and feeling good.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
Is it fair to say you feel anxious to be
activated right now?
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Definitely?
Speaker 11 (32:18):
I mean I feel I've felt anxious right when I
got put on it, but uh, I mean you got
to trust.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
The process, all right. Tanner Scott is not going to
be activated before Kirby Yates. Kirby Yates is thrown to
hitters tomorrow, and Dave Roberts said, out of the group
of veteran relievers that are on the injured list, between Kopek,
Tanner Scott, Michael Kopek, Tanner Scott, and Kirby Yates, it
will be Kirby Yates that is activated before the other two.
(32:46):
So that's good news. And hopefully Tanner Scott can be
activated after the Dodgers returned from coors Field and be
ready for the series in San Diego against these Padres.
So that's where things stand with the Dog relievers. Eight
six six seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers beat the Padres tonight three to two and are
(33:08):
in a first place tie with San Diego in the
NL West. Let's go out to Chuck who is at
Dodgers Stadium tonight for Kershaw Day. Chuck Kershaw delivered for.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
You, Dave.
Speaker 8 (33:22):
If there's an MVP of this team right now, it
is Klagen Kershaw. That Padrey lineup was nasty coming into
this game, and I was I was sitting right behind
home play and that top of am looked ugly. They
had no chance to again Kershaw at all. So I'm
telling you right, he did a great job.
Speaker 3 (33:42):
He did a great job of getting strike one, getting
ahead of hitters and getting ground balls, and his defense
helped him out, especially Freddie Freeman. Tonight, Dave.
Speaker 8 (33:52):
The only team that's going to stop the Dodgers of
the Padres. The only team that's going to stop the
Padres is a Dodgers. So this series is abhorrent, and
I think we have Snell and Blast now for the
rest of the weekend. The Dodgers have the upper hand.
If they could take care of this weekend, it's I
think it's a momentum shift for the rest of the season, all.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Right, I'll say it's the momentum shift the Dodgers need
at this moment, Chuck, But with the Dodgers have done
so well over the course of the last five years.
When they play the Padres in the regular season, win
or lose the series, the Dodgers keep going, while the
Padres have a trend of letting down in the series.
(34:34):
Right after the Dodgers they go to or San Francisco
comes to San Diego. So the Dodgers have to keep
this rolling in Denver and be in a good spot
when they play the Padres next weekend, because the momentum
is going to change a few different times. But you
hope they can keep it going this week.
Speaker 8 (34:53):
Yes, yes, but this Padres team is different than others.
I believe this year they are dan team, but they
were dangerous last year.
Speaker 3 (35:03):
They should have beat the Dodgers. They blew it. That's
why they're upset. Thanks for the phone call, Chuck, appreciate it. Yeah,
that's that's the truth. They blew it. They were up
two games to one. They couldn't win one more game.
The Dodgers were more resilient, took advantage of the Padres
offense going into a slump at the worst time, and
they're pitching at something to say about it. And the
(35:24):
guy that kind of let the Padres down, and maybe
the Padres let him down, was Dylan Cease. He's on
the mount tomorrow night. He was pitching on short rest
in Game four and it didn't go well. Dylan Ceas
is on the mound for San Diego tomorrow night. He's
five and ten with an ERA of four point fifty
two going up against Blake Snell. Snell zilla making his
(35:47):
biggest start for the Dodgers, and then his next start
in San Diego will be the biggest start for the
Dodgers until he makes another big start. But this is
the first real big playoff atmosphere game that he is
going to pitch for the Dodgers. He's not a stranger
to it. He pitched really well for the Rais in
(36:07):
the postseason when he was there, and we all remember
how well he pitched against the Dodgers during that NLDS
back in twenty twenty two. So he's a guy that
is ready for this type of game. I wouldn't want
anybody else on the mound tomorrow night other than Blake Snell.
I wouldn't want anybody else to start this series than
(36:28):
Clayton Kershaw. He delivered six innings, two hits, one earned run.
He's now seven to two. Jack Dryer gets the final
out of the game for his second save of the season.
A sellout crowd of fifty three thousand, one hundred and
nineteen saw the Dodgers beat the Padres tonight three to two.
By the way, Tomorrow night, our coverage begins at five
