Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this gem is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
This teen is really becoming a family.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Let's not play one on too.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Let's I love writing guys out to the show.
Speaker 4 (00:14):
Just thank you, give me, are your attention, your fires.
Speaker 5 (00:17):
This is world champion Dodgers, world champion thing it for a.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Small salt time they get a people what they want
to die to around two is special. I'm like, yeah,
it's not a headache.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
One of a con.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
This ball gone.
Speaker 6 (00:31):
You ready to go old time, go.
Speaker 5 (00:34):
Tow grab your phone to get in on the show
called eight six six nine eighty seven two five seven
that go to the show and now your host of
Dodger Talk, David Vassei.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
The Dodgers reclaimed sole possession of first place tonight with
a six nothing shut out when over the Padres. Welcome
the Dodger Talk. David vas say with you eight six
six nine eight seven two five seventy we are live
at Dodgers Stadium, where the Dodgers won their seventieth game
of the season, and also when the season series against
(01:10):
the Padres. The Dodgers are now seven and two against
San Diego. So if for some reason these two teams
end up in a tie on the last day of
the season, it would be the Dodgers crowned NL West champions.
But certainly the Dodgers have sent a statement to the
Padres in the first two games of this series, and
(01:33):
more importantly, send a message to each other that yeah,
when we focus and we heighten our level of focus,
we can play to our potential. And here's a real question,
and I'm not trying to troll anybody in San Diego
or anybody on the Padres side of things, but considering
(01:55):
the way the Padres let last year's NLDS away and
the Dodgers took it, of course to beat them, and
the Padres stewing over the fact they felt like they
should have been the ones winning the World Series last year,
and the Dodgers winning seven of nine this season, it's
(02:17):
a real question to ask, considering how good the Padres
were playing coming into Dodger Stadium and how bad they
have looked in the first two games of this series.
Are the Dodgers living rent free in the Padres head?
I mean, the Padres do not seem to be this big,
bad team that we heard about when they came to
(02:39):
Dodger Stadium, they seem to be a team that is
somewhat shrinking to the Dodgers. Now. That may change next
weekend at Pecho Park, but with the Dodgers winning these
first two games of the series, that only adds fuel
to the fire of that theory that the Dodgers are
(03:02):
living rent free in the Padres head overstatement, I don't
think so. Going back to last year's postseason and this year,
I mean Manny Machado and Fernando Tatist Junior being thrown
out in the first inning of tonight's game by Will Smith,
who made perfect throws and Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas
(03:23):
made incredible tags. There's something to be said about this.
The Padres can't seem to do anything right these days,
and the Dodgers seem to be doing everything right in
the first two games of this series, when they couldn't
do anything right leading up to this. I mean, they
were twelve and twenty two the last six weeks coming
(03:45):
into this series, and all of a sudden, now the
Dodgers are playing like the Dodgers we know and have
a one game lead over the Padres eight six six
nine eight seven two five seventy is the phone number,
and I get a lot of I get a lot
of stuff up here on the days that Blake Snell pitches.
(04:05):
Blake Snell is delivering for the Dodgers since he's become
healthy again. He has pitched thirteen consecutive innings going back
to August second in Tampa Bay and has pitched really well.
He has given up two Little League home runs at
Steinbrenner Field to Yondi Diaz. Since he came back, he
(04:28):
has been phenomenal and tonight did not even have his
best command to throw six scoreless innings tonight, and of
course Will Smith helped him out big time. Will Smith
changed the complexion of this game in the first inning,
but Blake Snell started to settle in and get some
momentum after he was pitching with a five to nothing
lead after the second inning. Let's head downstairs right now
(04:50):
to hear from tonight's winning pitcher Snell Zilla on sportsnet LA.
Speaker 7 (04:56):
You know, early on, just kind of filling out where
I was at. That's some good hits, and Will kind
of just yeah, held it down through two innings. He
had three outs and I had three outs, so we
were competing. But No, I mean that kind of set
the tone. I was surprised at how aggressive they were
being on the basis, I mean, they know me pretty well,
(05:19):
so it's good to get a lot of toes earlier
on what they were doing, what they're trying to do,
and then just learning from it, the takes that they
were having, what they were swinging at, and there's just
a lot that I was aware of that they You know,
I was there for three years, so I know this
team really well. But yeah, there was a lot of
stuff that I was learning just throughout the game, and
(05:42):
then I kind of settled them once I understood what
they're trying to do.
Speaker 8 (05:44):
And yeah, we obviously have two catchers. We have shown
just how talented they are defensively behind the plate. But
can you describe just what it does for a picture
to have someone like Will Smith who is there supporting
you when guys get on and finding ways to get
them out.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (05:58):
No, I mean, is is big for two of the
guys that stile like I tried being a little quicker
to the play one of them. I was shocked that
he got them out because I was normal longer. No,
I mean, it brings a lot of confidence knowing that
they can shut the running game down no matter you know,
(06:19):
how how long I take to get to the plate.
Speaker 9 (06:21):
But what do you think they were so aggressive against
you early and that's something with my product, like mention
them know you as well.
Speaker 7 (06:29):
Yeah, I think it's respect. But I mean, nobody knows
me better than reving on what I can do pitching.
Outside of Kyle Snyder, I think they're pretty neck and neck.
So I think you know that proler shield, like they
know me so well, so they understand, uh, you know
what the game is going to be. Yeah, I think
(06:52):
that's that's what I thought. Maybe it's different, but yeah,
I think respect on both ends.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Yeah, all right. There's Blake Snell on sports Net LA
and he was referencing the Padres pitching coach Rubennebla who
had meant a lot to Blake in those three years
with the Padres. Kyle Snyder. Blake has told me he's
like a second father to him, the pitching coach for
the Tampa Bay Rays. They came up together through the
(07:18):
minor league system. So that's a great point by Blake.
I mean, as well as he knows the Padres, the
Padres know Blake'snell really well as well. But tonight Blake
Snell is the winning pitcher after going six scoreless innings
despite all of everything that he said. And Will Smith
certainly deserves a big part in Tonight's win. Great throws
(07:40):
from behind the plate. Tonight eight six, six, seven, two
five seventy is the phone number. How about ta Oscar
Hernandez his twentieth home run tonight, back to back games
with home runs, and he has seven home runs against
the Padres since the start of last year, including the postseason.
And look, the Padres have not played well. And that's
(08:04):
why I'm asking the question whether or not the Dodgers
are in their heads. Because Jackson Merrill boxing a routine
fly ball in center field turns into two more runs.
The Dodgers are up five to nothing. With the way
Cease was pitching, this game was over with Blake Sneil
on the mound with a five nothing lead. Let's go
out to the phones for the first time. Let's go
(08:25):
out to John who is at Dodgers Stadium tonight. John,
hope you had a good experience with a sellout crowd here.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Great experience, David, I'm the guy who ran into you
in the Hall of I told you I was gonna
give you a buzz I.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
Remember you really you're in cell hell, John. Why don't
you hold on and get back to us in a second.
Let's go out to Dominic in Orange County. You're on
Dodger Talk. How you doing, Dominick.
Speaker 10 (08:56):
Oh, I am so happy that we blew out the Padres.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
This is first.
Speaker 10 (09:00):
I just want to say that this is my first
time calling in, so I just wanted to put that
out there. But I'm just so happy my football team
lost today, so that it sucks, so at least I
had one one of my teams one tonight. And I'm
also happy that the Dodgers also won because this is
(09:21):
this is going towards my dream of having a Dodgers
Toronto Blue Jays World Series. I really want that to happen,
because I don't think that's happened, and I don't I
don't even think the I don't even think the Dodgers
ever went against the Blue Jays. Something new, something fresh,
something exciting. Going north of the border is always fun,
(09:41):
so me being a hockey person as well, So I'm
happy that the Dodgers went today.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
All right, Dominic thank you for the phone call. The
closest the Dodgers and Blue Jays ever got to playing
each other in the World Series was back in nineteen
eighty five. I hate bringing up this year because that
was one of the most traumatic sports seasons of my life,
as far as the Dodgers blowing a two to nothing
series lead in the NLCS over the Cardinals, and then
(10:10):
the Cardinals coming back to win four straight, Ozzie Smith
walk off home run in Game five and Jack Clark's
go ahead home run in Game six, and the Blue
Jays also blew a big lead in the ALCS. They
blew a three to one ALCS lead, and Mark Goubazad,
George Brett and the Royals went off to the World Series.
So that's the closest it's ever come, but a long
(10:33):
way to go between now and then, And considering how
good the Brewers are and how far and away they
are winning their fourteenth in a row tonight, they're going
to be the number one seed in the National League Playoffs,
So that means the way it's stacked up right now,
the odds of the Dodgers and Padres facing each other
in the NLDS are not good. These two teams could
(10:55):
see each other in the NLCS. With the way things
are standing. Right now, let's go out to Saint Louis. Mike,
are you really listening in Saint Louis right now?
Speaker 6 (11:07):
Absolutely?
Speaker 8 (11:07):
Dave?
Speaker 4 (11:09):
All right, well, thank you for turning on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
Yeah, I'd like to know what your assessment of Machado
is as a third baseman. Forgive about all the other stuff,
but what do you think of him as a fielder.
Speaker 4 (11:24):
I think he's one of the top third basemen in baseball.
I know he has a lot of airs this year.
I think he leads third basement in aras this year.
But it's not from a lack of poor defense. It's him,
you know, trying doing what Machado does and sometimes it
doesn't go the right way.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
I saw that he has a real flat throw over
the first but man, he really.
Speaker 4 (11:52):
I'll say this. Mike ohl Herscheizer came in the booth
before the game today and that plane the third inning
last night. I said on the show that I thought
Machado was trying to do too much diving for that
bunt by Rojas, and orl Herscheizer said he loved it.
That completely contradicts the whole Johnny Hustle label that Machado has.
(12:13):
I mean, he laid out to try to make a
spectacular play and he didn't come up with it. But
oral Herscheizer said, as a pitcher, you love seeing that
from a guy like Machado on your team. So I'm
not a Machado hater like many Dodger fans are and
baseball fans are. I think he plays a role of
the villain and he embraces it that he's the villain
(12:36):
everywhere he goes. But I'm a Machado fan. I got
to know him when he played for the Dodgers. I
really enjoyed him. He was great to work with and
I thought he was pretty good.
Speaker 6 (12:47):
Yeah, I'm not really looking at that villain aspect, but
I'm just looking at, you know, like, how does that
affect the team for the Padres when he does that stuff?
Like what you know what I mean, what what stuff?
Speaker 4 (13:03):
What stuff?
Speaker 6 (13:05):
I mean? He really like it seems like he's and
don't know how to really say it, but I mean,
this guy, if they're gonna win a World Series, it's
at least it has to be a probably a big
part of him.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Yeah, He's gonna be a big part of it. Mike, Hope,
you have a great night out there in Saint Louis.
It's getting a little late out there. Eight six six nine,
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers
shut out the Padres tonight six to nothing and have
a one game lead in the NL West. Let's go
out to Eric in Hollywood. You're on Dodger Talk with
(13:48):
David vasse Hi.
Speaker 6 (13:49):
Eric Dodger Day should.
Speaker 11 (13:53):
Dav The Dodgers are in trouble. The Dodgers are in trouble.
I've been hearing Dodger talk all week and I heard
some good ones. Bro Otani should be a closer, da Comforto,
get rid of doc et cetera. The Dodgers strong starting
pitching by Kersh last night and Snell today was key.
(14:14):
And that starting pitching at me coming around, good solid
at bats, and the bullpens starting in the seventh inning
not the fourth, makes a big difference.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
DV.
Speaker 11 (14:24):
My Dodger Tex j was negative man E or George Juan.
It was only me and Jimbo believing DV. Thirty nine
games left and we just got to believe in our team.
Bu leave I never stopped rooting for these guys. I believe.
Oh hey, dv Ash Jackson, merrill, how the pressure feels.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
That's a sinister laugh right there, Eric, thank you for
the phone call. Eight six six seven two five seventy.
And look like the Dodgers have been saying, like Dave
Roberts said, this is not Game seven of the World Series.
So even when the Padres leave town and the Dodgers
head to Denver for a four game series against the
last place Rockies, they got to take care of business
(15:09):
there as well, because it's not going to be easy
to go from the mile high city back to sea
level to play the Padres again in San Diego. So
the Dodgers have got to take three out of four,
maybe even sweep the Rockies in that four game series,
and pad the lead, and they have a pretty good
chance of sweeping the Padres tomorrow afternoon. With Tyler glassnow
(15:32):
on the mound, want to head back downstairs. Kirsten Watson
on Sports and at LA caught up with Will Smith
about the great plays he made behind the plate tonight
in the first and second innings.
Speaker 12 (15:44):
That's fun, you know, I'll get three three outs, He'll
seem out that way, I'll blake out. But guys throws
off some good talks by Mukim Biggie, So got those
those are big.
Speaker 9 (15:53):
All right, let's taking of Blake and the belts the bullpen.
Speaker 8 (15:56):
How do you will navigate the their lineup having this
set up performance?
Speaker 12 (16:00):
Yeah, he just executed pitches. You know we needed a pitch,
you executed it. I got some strake auts, got some
week contacts and you know, give us six really good innings.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
All right, there's Will Smith on sports net La man
a few words. He lets his play do the talking.
But man, that was huge. In the first inning. He
threw out not just one runner, Tattist Junior, but he
threw out a second runner Luisa Rise in that first
inning to stall out any sort of first inning threat
that the Padres were going to make. And how many
(16:30):
times have we looked up and the Dodgers are trailing
after the first inning. It was huge for the Dodgers
to be able to come to the plate with a
chance to have the lead, which they took three to
nothing in the bottom of the first inning. The Dodgers
are now forty two and fifteen when they score.
Speaker 13 (16:48):
First to Justin.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
Again, Hey, Justin, let's try this again.
Speaker 13 (16:52):
How you doing, Doyer, Doyer, Doyer, Baby, The Dodgers are
living rent free these Padres heads. Man, look at that
starting pitcher tonight, sees he came out and threw more
balls and oh my gosh, that was craziness. And then
they're trying to send Manny Machado to second base. Man,
(17:14):
the guy slow. Man, they're so scared. Man, we don't
have to worry about these dudes talking about how bad
the Dodgers have been playing recently. Man, Padres come into
town and they start quivering in their boots. Man, how
about those Dodgers?
Speaker 4 (17:29):
Baby, all right, justin, thank you for that phone call.
I love it. Eight six six nine eight seven two
five seventy. What has also helped the Dodgers that we
haven't seen consistently is good defense. In the first two
games of this series, Alex Freeland made a great play
in the ninth inning tonight, and he did misplay a
(17:51):
ball a ground ball in the first inning that set
up the Padres to have a threat. But the Dodgers
need to continue to play from a head with this
starting pitching and also play good defense. So you got
two great throws from Will Smith in the first inning.
You had a great play by Alex Freeland, ta Oscar
Hernandez got some good jumps in the outfield tonight. So
(18:12):
it was a well rounded good win for the Dodgers.
And I'll say this again because it was such a
big part of this game and the Dodgers won this game.
In the first two innings, Will Smith, who caught two
runners stealing in the first inning and one in the second,
became the first Dodger catcher to throw out two base
runners or would be base steelers in the same inning
(18:34):
since he has Monti Grandal in April of twenty seventeen.
He also became the first Dodger catcher since at least
nineteen seventy four to catch three runners trying to attempt
to steal in the first two innings. The last Dodger
catcher with three throwouts was Russell Martin on June twenty fourth,
(18:55):
twenty ten, in Anaheim against the Angels. So, just to
put it all into context, a big game by Will
Smith tonight. Eight sixty six seven two five seventy is
the phone number. We're gonna take a time out when
we come back. More of your phone calls, we'll check
in with Jose Mota, and we'll also get you an
update on Kirby Yates. After the Dodgers shut out the
(19:15):
Padres six to nothing on a five to seventy LA Sports.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
On air at AM five seventy, online at AM five
seventy LA sports dot com, and available by podcast on
the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
This is Dodger Talk with David Masson Man matter waits.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
Here's the one pitch Jee swingson rhymes at the deep center.
It is headed back toward the walls.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
Come home run, Ty Oscar.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
He is now homearden back to back games and the
Dodgers lead at six. Them upod home run number twenty
on the season. Horte Oscar Hernandez.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
Ta Oscar Hernandez given the Padres nightmares again. He hits
home runs and back to back games. He now has
twenty home runs for the fifth consecutive season. And the
Dodgers shut out the Padres tonight by a final score
of six to nothing in front of a sellout crowd
of fifty three thousand and six oh six. They win
(20:21):
their seventieth game of the year and reclaim sole possession
of first place in the NL West. Daniels Jewelers presents
the home run Forecast. Go to AM five to seventy

next game. Daniels Jewelers Own the Dream.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Moga.
Speaker 4 (20:50):
Amazing what two wins will do against the Padres to
change the mood of the fan base. Jose, everybody's feeling
good these days.
Speaker 6 (20:58):
You gotta feel good.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
We have somebody, let's know Hill on the mound, a
big game pitcher, okay, who's done it before. He was
just finding his way and then the left of he
pitched and we're listening to him.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Dave.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
I said to you when I see a guy and
here a guy that punchs out ten batters in five innings,
saying there's a lot of things I want to get better,
be careful because there's way more in that tech. And
he show it again why he is who he is,
what he got the five year deal and also not
going to detracted by anything from strike zones to guys
not swimming their pitches from the other team. Knowing him
(21:29):
so well, it helped a lot. That he got defensive
help from Will Smith, which is outstanding. But boy, he
really showed why he is an ace. He's a guy,
really an a stop a guy that so he's got
a couple of so youngs.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Isn't what they say about the best pictures in the game.
It's easy when you have all your pitches working for you.
But it says something about a pitcher and separates the
great ones from the average ones that when you don't
have your best command or your best pitches and you
still go out there and put up a zero like
he did tonight.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Oh, this is an ongoing conversation. We can go back
and do a whole podcast about this. When guys talk
about I didn't have my best stuff, well, the good
ones will talk about stuff like that because a lot
of times you could be a medio for pitcher and
have decent stuff and if the other team starts spreading
the zone on you and chasing your stuff, looks great
even though it was okay, right, But the big ones say, like,
(22:23):
you know what, out of my three main pitches, if
I have one I'm good, and that's what they go
to because they know exactly to go to the well,
when to use it, and then to use secondary pitches,
a third pitch to say, let me just show this around.
It's not there right now, but I know I.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
Have number one. It could be one of those three.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
Pitches to be out there and get it done. So,
you know, I have a number of long conversation with
Kurt Schilling about this years ago, about okay, how many
times in thirty two stars are going to have your
best stuff? Maybe eighteen times? So many times the other
twelve figure it out and in in October when you're
tired and you're one out, will go out there and
figured out move because it becomes more mental issue than
physical issue. But big ones, they know how to get
(23:03):
it done. And today we saw one again we saw
last night with Kersha that you know starting pitching rains
and well we need to see an Anaheim. We're seeing
it now and there's a result right now.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Jose Mota is joining us after the Dodgers shut out
the Padres six to nothing tonight. Also a big part
of this game, Jose was Jackson Merrill dropping that fly
ball by Freddie Freeman with the combination of Cease not
being very sharp tonight six walks and in the very
first inning just couldn't throw a strike. Do you feel
(23:34):
like the Padres have bad feelings when they see the Dodgers?
Are the Dodgers in their head?
Speaker 2 (23:40):
I mean, obviously they're playing like the Dodgers on their heads,
But the main thing to me is to see a
guy like Jackson Merrill almost respectfully, just giving too much
time for Taki to make a decision about he's catching
a ball or not. But as he gets more experienced,
that's going to be his ball from the minute at least.
The bats and another here is when your guys walking
(24:02):
a lot of batters, you know what happens to your
defense exactly that there are other heels dig a little sluggish,
they're being on the field for a long time, and
mistakes like this are more to happen. When your guys
walking a lot of guys and you spend a lot
of time on the field, you see more errors happen
in the infield when the guy's walking about it because
if all finds you, you're not on your toes and
things like that. So unfortunately for Jackson Merriw. His first
(24:24):
era comes in a woman, which it was just an
F eight, and he commanded and Tati's made a decision
that he's gonna let him have it. But whatever it took,
I'd give the Dodgers credit because they pursued this guy.
He gets flustered and frustrated when you don't chase and
spread the zone, and that.
Speaker 6 (24:39):
Was the result.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
You put them on play and things like these will happen.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Jose Mota is joining us after the Dodgers shut out
the Padres tonight six to nothing. You know, last time
the Dodgers had a chance to sweep, they had a
chance to sweep the Blue Jays, they gave it away
late and that started their four game losing streak led
to them losing temporarily first place. How big is it
(25:05):
for the Dodgers to play clean baseball tomorrow and even
give themselves a chance to sweep because if you don't
play well, Jose, I know it's only one game, but
we saw what could happen last Sunday.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
It's a two game swing, no matter what, when you're
facing your opponent face to face, is a two game swing.
So bought them take care business and I think when
we look at what the first two guys have down
on the mound, a couple of lefties. For Tyler Glassnel,
the responsibility becomes even bigger now that they're going to
be very happy to see a riding tomorrow. It's going
to be up to him. Is he teaches guys and
(25:40):
sees a pattern of pitching evel though from Lessie it
might be a little different, but you know, a fast
inside against taties. My child was a fastball in side,
same thing with Merrill and all those guys. So now
a guy like say and God on Rika's side, he's
start one hundred and three dolls an hour. To me,
that's more an indication of what Glassdal can do tomorrow
in terms of picking pat him. But his stuff is
(26:01):
way better as a starter because yes, three or four
pitches he can come bandcleving a big break and ball.
So you know, it's like pay attention to top of
a bout, what are they looking for and dominate and
instead of thinking sweet, think about just playing the best game.
And I you know, they had the same situation happened
in Cincinnati. They were disappointing, they'd have to good at bats.
They didn't pitch well. Same thing as you mentioned happen
against Toronto. It's just a time to say we're playing
(26:23):
good base so let's just continue on. And nobody wants
to be the guy to be the fall guy here.
And I think it starts with a guy in the
mount knowing that tomorrow could be a low scoring game
and get used to that, knowing that you got to
execute out the way you wont today and yesterday was
not just by slugging people, because you need to just
be smart enough to take advantage opportunities when they come early,
(26:43):
maximize them, but also get the guy on the mount
to throw some zeros and just get them enough to win,
because tomorrow it is a big swing game.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
All right, Jose, We'll see you back down here tomorrow morning,
as the Dodgers and Padres wrap up this part of
the three game series before they see each other again
in San Diego next weekend.
Speaker 6 (27:02):
David Mechan, Oh, yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (27:06):
I made it a Felice Sabato, So did snell Zilla.
Snell Zilla Sabato was higante tonight.
Speaker 6 (27:13):
He's a big boy.
Speaker 4 (27:13):
All right, good night, Thanks there he goes Jose moda
part of the Dodgers Spanish radio broadcast, and look, he
said something that I've been mentioning a few different times.
I still feel like Blake Snell does not get the
respect that he deserves. He's thirty two years old, He's
won two Cy Young Awards. At some point you got
(27:36):
to recognize that this guy is not in his first
year or second year. He's not a kid. He knows
what he's doing. He knows how to navigate a lineup.
So at some point you got to acknowledge that this
guy's not a rookie. He's not in his first two
or three years trying to figure it out. He's won
two cy Youngs. He's pitched big in the postseason for
(27:57):
the Rays and Padres. There's a reason why the Dodgers
signed him. Let's go out to Sam Bernardino. Ray, you're
on Dodger Talk. How you doing?
Speaker 6 (28:05):
Ray?
Speaker 1 (28:07):
Hey, I'm going David think about him? Looking ahead for
the divisional Yes, can you hear me?
Speaker 2 (28:14):
Can you hear me here?
Speaker 4 (28:16):
Okay, great, can let's do this?
Speaker 11 (28:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (28:19):
Just looking ahead as a divisional series and looking at
what Kersho played last night. What are you looking at
in a starting lineup for starting pitchers? For the Divisional Series.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Well, that's a great question. Ray a long way to
go between now and then, but I have said that
for me, my first rough draft would be Otani, Snell,
and Yamamoto and maybe Kershaw involved in that first game
with Otani because the reason why I would say Otani
(28:52):
game one, how many times is he going to start
in that series? Probably once, and it leaves you the
option to have Otani possibly come back and pitch in
some form or fashion in a Game four, a game five,
possibly to do what he did in the World Baseball
Classic and close it out, whether it's the NLDS or
(29:15):
the NLCS or even the World Series. So that's the
reason why I would want Otani pitching early in the series.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
So you're looking more at going at a release.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Yeah, yeah, mm hmm. That's right. And it kind of
reminds me of David Cohne with the Yankees. David ConA
five time World Series champion, was a contributor to the
two thousand Yankees coming out of the bullpen. And look,
there's nobody else I would want on the mound than
Kershaw in a playoff game. I know everybody takes shot
at his playoff resume. But that's so lazy just to say, ah,
(29:53):
he's a bad playoff pitcher. There are different circumstances to
every single game, and nobody ever wants to bring up
the good playoff games that he's pitched, and.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
If we had one of the best playoff games when
he came out relief pitching back in about four or
five years ago. Coming out of the ball he.
Speaker 4 (30:10):
Knows how to do it. He knows how to do it.
That's why, out of all these starters, if you're gonna
use one of them out of the bullpen, Kershaw is
the one that knows how to do it and can
do it better than others. Glass now is not coming
out of the bullpen. Yamamoto is not coming out of
the bullpen Otani. That would be a challenge to have
(30:32):
him come out of the bullpen for you know, middle relief.
Kershaw would be that guy. All right, Thank you for
the phone call rate, deep thoughts. They're thinking about it.
Eight six six nine eighty seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to John, who's coming
(30:53):
from Dodger Stadium tonight. Hi John, You're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
Hey, Hey, Gay, thanks for taking call. I lost you
earlier when I was in the parking lot, But what
I had said was, I remember a few years back
you interviewed Snell when he was a Padre and you
kind of banterred back and forth about when he was
a free agent he would be a Dodger someday. So
I want to thank you for recruiting him because I
think that interview helps feel the gills.
Speaker 4 (31:22):
I don't know about that, John, but certainly he's a
pitcher that I thought the Dodgers could use going back
to then, and obviously the Dodgers felt the same way
this offseason, and I think you're starting to see how
much he can help a Dodger rotation. And you haven't
even seen the best of Blake Snell yet.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Well that's that's exactly it. So I'm excited to see
what the next thirty nine thirty eight games look like.
Speaker 4 (31:51):
All right, John, thanks a lot for saying hi tonight,
and we'll see you at the next home game, hopefully
sooner rather than later.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
Well, be back August twenty seven.
Speaker 4 (32:02):
Thanks all right, I'll circle it. Thanks for the phone call, John. Yeah,
Blake Snell's been a guy. I mean, he's a really
good pitcher, and he's unflappable in big games. Now, it
doesn't always go the way every pitcher wants it to go,
no matter how calm they are on the mound, But
you can't say that the stage is too big for
(32:23):
Blake Snell. And that's the type of guy the Dodgers need.
Eight six six, nine, seven, two five seventy is the
phone number. I know there's a lot of good feelings
tonight after the first two wins of the series, and
rightfully so, but for the last I don't know. I
think more than seven shows ten shows. Over the course
of the last few weeks, there have been people calling
(32:45):
in asking about team meetings and who's gonna slam the door,
who's gonna throw the table over? And I've kind of
mentioned to you that there are discussions before every series,
even every games, amongst the hitters. And yesterday, you know,
we observe Blake Trinan even having a meeting with the
relievers out there in left field before they started their
(33:08):
stretch work and throwing program, and they all had an
open form discussion, and Blake told us on the pregame
show today that they just looked each other in the
eye and held each other accountable to be better. And
I've seen that take place over the course of the
last I don't know, two or three years, at different
points in time of the season where the relievers get
in a circle and a few guys, few of the
(33:30):
leaders speak and Blake Trenton certainly was at the forefront
of that. Yesterday and also yesterday we had a chance
to catch up with Freddie Freeman before the first game
of the series, and with no fear, I let Freddie
Freeman know that you've been screaming for a team meeting.
Here's what Freddie had to say about team meetings and
(33:51):
how those things function. Players meetings. I've fielded calls for
three weeks about who's gonna throw some pasta like Tommy Lasorda,
Who's gonna slam a door? I said, it's not going
to be Freddie Freeman. I could tell you that.
Speaker 9 (34:05):
It's probably not gonna be me. But it's not to
say that there's meetings happening every single day in our clubhouse.
We have hitters meetings every single day, there's pictures meetings
every single day. There's meetings going on all day long.
It's not like we're just sitting at our locker waiting
for the game to start. So in the hitters meetings,
we have been talking a lot because we know offensively
we haven't been very very good the last couple of
(34:27):
months since and pretty much almost every area we got
told because we had we had a meeting that showed
us that we weren't doing very good since about June
end of June.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
So what's the power point here was.
Speaker 9 (34:36):
Pretty much there's a lot of red numbers and red
is not good. So we have been talking about how
we could get better. We've been so good in the
past of working pictures, getting into their bullpens early and
knocking starters out after four to five innings, and a
lot of pictures have been gett into the sixth seventh innings.
So it's talking about quality of about bats, making sure
we're aggressive, the guidance scoring position. So you know, it's
(34:58):
it's ebbs and flows of a sea in one sixty two,
it's long, it's it's sometimes, but now we're kind of
in the sprint at the last forty games. So we
have been told. We've been talking about how we've changed
how we talk in hitters meetings, just kind of emphasizing
on our approach. Every single person that's in the starting
line of talks in the hitters meeting and we go
(35:18):
over what we're going to do our approach that night
against that starter. And usually it was the hitting coaches
would start and kind of give their mindset and then
we talk and now we have flipped it where we
say what we are going to do, and then the
hitting coaches just kind of add on to like maybe
what they think they're going to do in a big
spot runnings are scoring position pitches and how they go
about it. So we've been trying to switch up some
(35:40):
things and making sure that everyone's doing their homework and
we're prepared going into games.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
All right, there you go. There's part of our conversation
with Freddie Freeman, and I just wanted to put that
on its own platform for you to hear yourself about
team meetings and having team meetings when things aren't going well,
and certainly they weren't going going well for the Dodgers
leading into this series. But obviously whatever discussions they've had
(36:05):
as a group, as individuals, as pockets of the team, hitters, relievers, starters,
it obviously is a point of discussion. To raise the
level of focus. I think that's the biggest thing. And
Dave Roberts even said it before last night's game that
Clayton Kershaw was the right guy to have on the
(36:26):
mound last night because he heightens the focus of everybody.
He demands it, because everybody sees how much work he
puts in, even at this stage of his career and
to compete. And I think that carried over tonight as well.
So there you go. On the topic of team meetings.
Eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy is
(36:48):
the phone number. Tomorrow, Freddie Freeman, part of Players Weekend,
is going to be using a bat with his oldest son,
Charlie's name on it. Charlie was the one that suggested
that Freddie Wright each one of the boys name on
the bat and use it each night from youngest to oldest.
So tomorrow it will be Charlie with his name on
(37:10):
the bat. I'm sure he's gonna love that. Before we
say good night, wanted to give you an update on
a few of the injured Dodger players. Kirby Yates and
Tanner Scott are headed out for a rehab assignment on Tuesday,
Kirby Yates through the hitters today, Tanner Scott through the
hitters yesterday. Also, we're seeing keyk Hernandez do a lot
(37:30):
more stuff on the field. From what I've been told,
Key k has actually been swinging the bat, which was
the one the part of baseball that was giving him
a lot of pain. So that's great news that Keyky
Hernandez is swinging the bat. We're seeing him out here
tracking fly balls during early batting practice, so that's good news.
(37:51):
It feels like he may be returning here soon. But
here's what Kirby Yates told us about where he's at,
not only recovering from the hand m string injury, but
also trying to get on point to be able to
put away hitters when he has two strikes on him
from right now.
Speaker 14 (38:07):
I like the way the lower half's firing. I think,
you know, I think we're back to kind of being
able to use lower half and be explosive and not
trying to manipulate the baseball a whole lot. And I
feel strong. I feel like I'm in a much better
spot than I was three weeks ago. And you know,
at this point, you know, I don't think anybody feels
very good. In the middle of August. I probably feel
(38:29):
a lot better than some of these other guys that
are going through it right now because I've had a
couple of breaks. But you know, I think overall, I
think the health is good and you know, we're ready
to roll.
Speaker 4 (38:39):
What did you think about the way those four relievers
were able to piece it together last night?
Speaker 14 (38:44):
I think it's awesome. You know, it sucks to be
on the sidelines because at some point, you know, you
do feel a little bit responsible when you know things
go south and guys get put in situations that you
know that they they don't come on the other side of.
But on the flip side of that is that you
know they're getting situations that are very very big for them.
(39:06):
It's kind of for like Jack and some of these
other guys, it's the first time that they're getting in
those situations, and I personally think they're killing it. I mean,
everybody runs into like, you know, you have your bad
one every once in a while. I've done it a Tanner
zone and everybody that's been in that situation does it,
and you know, that's the best way to learn, and
they're learning pretty quick and they're doing a hell of
a job and you know they're they're killing it. It's
(39:27):
only gonna make us better.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
All right. There's Kirby Yates given the update and praise
to a lot of these young relievers that have stepped
up in the absence of Michael Kopek, Evan Phillips, Kirby Yates,
and Tanner Scott, namely benk Casparius and Jack Dryer. Where
would the Dodgers be without those two rookies. This Dodger
bullpen would not be as good as they have been
(39:51):
trying to hold the fort down while those veterans have
been hurt. Not to mention Evan Phillips out for the
rest of the year. And also, you got to give
some love to Anthony Bonda. He's been a rubber arm
out there all season long. When Dave Roberts has needed it,
He's answered the phone. No matter how he's been feeling good, bad,
not so great mentally physically, He's answered the call. Anthony
(40:14):
Bonda has been huge. We didn't know who Anthony Bonda
was last year. He was really good in the postseason
last year and many of you may have been skeptical
about whether or not he could repeat it, but he has.
He's put together a full season with the Dodgers where
he's pitched really well when they have been very thin
down there in the bullpen. Speaking of the bullpen, if
(40:37):
you're at the game tonight, a sellout crowd got a
Blake trend and Bobblehead night. It was great to see
Blake and his family out here pregame, and it'll be
even better to see Blake trying back on the mound
tomorrow with a Dodger lead. And it'll be up to
the Dodger offense, the Dodger defense, and the Dodgers starting
pitcher tomorrow, Tyler Glass Now to make that all happen.
(40:58):
The Dodgers will be facing former Dodger you Darvis, who
has pitched really well every time he has faced the
Dodgers since leaving for the Chicago Cubs after the seventeen season.
Darvish this season, coming back from a season full of injuries,
is two to three with an ERA of five sixty one.
Morongo Casino Dodgers on Deck begins at noon, first pitch
(41:19):
at one ten with Rick Monday and Tim Neverett. That'll
do it for us Tonight on Dodger Talk. Thanks to
Colin Ee for all his help back at our Burbank studios.
Thanks to Dwayne McDonald grinding out here at Dodgers Stadium.
Thanks to you for listening. In case you missed any
of the show, you can find it on the iHeartRadio app.
That's also where you can hear our extensive pregame conversation
(41:43):
with Blake Trinin as well. Once again, the final score
tonight from Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers retakes sole possession of
first place in the NL West with a resounding six
nothing shut out win over the Padres. Have a great
rest of your night. We'll talk to you tomorrow. Zero
