Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this gene is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
This team is really becoming a family.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Let's not play one on phone.
Speaker 4 (00:10):
Let's wind it.
Speaker 5 (00:11):
I love writing me these guys after the show, just
thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Give me are your attention, your fire and not a piss.
Speaker 6 (00:17):
This is world champion, Dodger, world champion.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Thing here for the small soft time they get a
people what they want to die.
Speaker 6 (00:24):
To A two is special.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm like, yeah, it's not a headache.
Speaker 6 (00:28):
One of the cor This ball's gone. You ready to go?
Speaker 7 (00:33):
He go to the south.
Speaker 8 (00:35):
Grab your phone to get in on the show called
eight six six nine eighty seven two five seven.
Speaker 6 (00:40):
I'll go to the show.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
And now your host of Dodger Talk, David Vasse.
Speaker 9 (00:46):
Oh Tim Cakes did not want the smoke tonight. He
called me up. He said, hey, I don't I'm not
made for this tonight. I need you. I need you
to take these phone calls tonight. I need you to
handle this. So here I am Dodger Talk with David
Vase live from Peco Park in San Diego until nine
thirty tonight. Eight six six nine eight seven two five
(01:09):
seventy is the phone number. Truth is Tim Kates is
doing double duty. He's got Raiders preseason action. But still,
you know he didn't want the smoke tonight, but I'm
used to it, good, bad, ugly. We can get into
all of it tonight, as the Padres are now back
in first place after a five to one win and
(01:30):
winning the first two games of this series against the Dodgers.
And it's a little shocking because this is the latest
the San Diego Padres have been in first place since
twenty ten. The last time the Padres won a division
title was two thousand and six. As Yogi Berra used
(01:51):
to say, it's getting late early. And I know you
heard from Dave Roberts in the Clubhouse show he he
was meeting not with Mookie Bets, but I did see
general manager Brandan Gomes and one of the Dodgers' top
hitting coaches, JT. Watkins, come out of his office and look,
(02:11):
things have got to change. Miguel Rojas also said it.
He said it when we were doing Dodger Talk on
a Saturday morning at Superior Grocers a couple of weeks ago.
Guys have been trying to find their swings. Now it's
time to give the team you're at bats, and it
feels like Dave Roberts is at that breaking point as well.
(02:33):
It's just incredible. Really, the theme in the Dodger clubhouse
is exactly what you felt listening to the game, watching
the game all of us. Nestor Cortes really is going
to only give up one hit to the Dodgers that
I don't care how good his cutter was, he should
(02:54):
not limit this Dodger offense to one hit. And I
will say this, obviously, the bottomn four of this Dodger
lineup is not what it's going to be even in
a week, let alone two weeks, where you have outside
of Andy Pies, he got Piz Rojas, Buddy Kennedy, Alex
call those are not going to be the same names
(03:16):
in the next week two weeks, because Dave Roberts told
me yesterday, and he told Mike Pomeranz of the Padres
broadcast as well. Max Munsey is on his way back
here in the next ten days, maybe in ten days,
So that's big because the Dodger offense is not the
same without moncy Key k Hernandez is going to be back,
(03:39):
likely on Monday against the Reds, and Tommy Edman hopefully
gets that ankle all straightened out here and is back
no later than the second week of September. So you
get those guys back healthy. This lineup is a lot
deeper and a lot more effective. But until then, the
Dodgers have got to find a way. And tonight a
(03:59):
disappointing night for Otani, Betts, and Freddie Freeman. None of
them had a hit tonight. Ta Oscar Hernandez hitless tonight,
and Freddie hit a ball off of Nestor Cortes in
the first inning that was almost in the same place
that Cortes put that fastball in Game one of last
year's World Series. Freddie hit it a long way, one
(04:20):
hundred and seven miles an hour, just didn't go anywhere,
and he was fit to be tied, shaking his head.
Going back to the dugout, I want to get down
to Miguel Rojas before we take your phone calls eight
six six nine eight seven two five seventy and you
can hear from one of the veterans on this team
that does play team baseball and doesn't try to slug
(04:43):
about what the Dodgers need to do moving forward.
Speaker 10 (04:47):
Miguel, what was Nestor Cortes doing so well. You were
the only one to have a hit tonight against him.
Speaker 11 (04:53):
I just feel like we we had an approach against him.
He was able to kid the all the away from writings.
We got a lot of writings out there. He was
attacking us a different way that he was pitching the
last couple, last couple of starts. I feel like that
approach was kind of like getting a little closer and uh,
trying to be aggressive to his fastball. But he was
(05:16):
he was He was good throwing the quarter in the
outside part of the play and kind of keep us,
keep us off balanced.
Speaker 7 (05:23):
I felt like a lot of swings that we.
Speaker 11 (05:24):
Took today was in uh, really good swings to kind
of like get on base.
Speaker 7 (05:30):
He was a little bit more to to.
Speaker 11 (05:31):
Do damage early in the town and he was able
to capitalize on that and a couple bosa we heard
riot people and uh this this night for sure are
frustrating for the offense because we know we we're more
than capable of putting better at bats and more hits together,
you know, to create some traffic and and being able
(05:51):
to give us a chance to win the game.
Speaker 7 (05:53):
But I mean, he wasn't a good night for us.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
With that yesterday with Darbish, we approached you guys differently
than you as originally anticipated in how difficuloses it to
make that kind of adjustment the game.
Speaker 7 (06:04):
Yeah, with our vis you always expected. Uh he's a
he's a guy who prepares really well.
Speaker 11 (06:08):
And uh he follows Uh, he follows the protocols sometimes
and sometimes he goes away from it.
Speaker 7 (06:15):
He got so many weapons that he can go to.
Speaker 11 (06:17):
You know, he got three different sliders and and a
couple of things that he can do different. We had
a really good game against him a home and he
prepared for us a little bit different. And we gotta
be better making adjustments in game. We can really let
these uh, these games that are going away from us
just getting one hit.
Speaker 7 (06:36):
I know it's hard.
Speaker 11 (06:36):
I know hitting is hard, the hardest thing to do.
But I feel like we we need to continue to
get better if we want to get to where we
want to be, which is uh winning the division and
winning the world here. So we gotta as an offense,
we I think we start, we got to start making
a little bit better adjustments in game.
Speaker 9 (06:55):
All Right, there's Miguel Rojas laying it out point blank
and Dave Roberts agreed with Miguel Rojas and Will Smith.
Here was what Will Smith had to say, because we
spoke to him after Miguel Rojas and in case you
haven't realized it, and I'm not putting this on Will Smith,
who was zero for three tonight and now his batting
average is under two ninety seven. But Will Smith is
(07:17):
in the middle of his first slump of the season.
First slump, think back, going back to Tokyo. Will Smith
has taken off and never looked back this season until now.
In his last thirty games, Will Smith is hitting two
twenty eight. In his last fifty at bats, Will Smith
(07:37):
is seven for fifty with seventeen strikeouts.
Speaker 6 (07:41):
Here's Will Smith.
Speaker 7 (07:43):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
No, it's some balls. Hard to write that he's caught,
but uh, yeah, you know he's getting ahead of us,
you know, some self contact. Yeah, we needed to jump
on and put some runs up early on him. But yeah,
to send you that.
Speaker 10 (07:58):
Since Tokyo, you've been off and running this season, but
it feels like you've hit like a little bit of
a of a valley here. Do you feel that way?
Do you feel like anything of the demands of catcher
have affected that just.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
No for me personally, I think just some mechanical things
have crept in that I'm working on cleaning up. You know,
it's space folders, there's highs and lows, so you know
at some point there was going to be you know, slump,
whatever you want to call it. But uh no, not worry,
just continue to work to whatever it was done. Dig
my way out.
Speaker 10 (08:29):
What happened with with Tyler in the fourth inning, Yeah,
I mean just you know, a couple of walks. Larean
had a really good base hit, just taking it backside
on the back or sinker, Yeah, just just falling behind. Guys,
you give him a chance and not you know, don't
we do the first three innings?
Speaker 9 (08:47):
All right, there's Will Smith, Dodger catcher. You heard from
Miguel Rojas, You heard from Will Smith, will play the
extended answer Dave Roberts gave me in the clubhouse as
well about how he agrees with those two guys and
how things have to change. It's not about your swing.
It feels like the Dodgers are always working on their swing.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
In the cage.
Speaker 9 (09:08):
There's gotta be looking at the pitcher, looking at the game,
read and reacting and we didn't see that tonight, and
it was evident, and Dave Roberts said there's been some
better discussions among players regarding that after the game tonight,
because I certainly hope. So it's not just about your swing.
It's not just about your batting average or your home
(09:30):
runs or your slug this point in time, it's about
trying to win this division. The reality is going into
tomorrow's finale here in San Diego, the Dodgers are down
a game in the division. And I know it's not
a make or break game. It's not a make or
break series. But you'd rather leave here tied for first
place rather than two games back. And the Padres have
(09:52):
an easier schedule in the month of September than the
Dodgers do. Eight six six, eight seven two five seventy
is the phone number. Dodgers fall to the Padres tonight,
five to one, and Nestor Cortes one hits the Dodgers
through six innings.
Speaker 6 (10:07):
Tonight. Let's go out to Costa Mesa. Sonny.
Speaker 9 (10:10):
You're on Dodger Talk with David Vase live from San Diego.
Speaker 6 (10:14):
Hi, Sonny, how you doing?
Speaker 9 (10:17):
David? Love your work, Thank you. I had a great
time with Joe and Orel tonight on Sports net LA.
I wish there were some wins. I wish I could
talk to a player on the field post game, but
that just hasn't happened, and it's it's frustrating for everybody involved.
But it's up to those guys to look at themselves
in the mirror and realize, hey, am I not giving
(10:40):
team at bats? Am I too worried about me myself?
And I feels like that was the tenor in the
Dodger clubhouse tonight. Those guys have got.
Speaker 12 (10:49):
A change, Yeah, absolutely, you know, it's the go Roja
did a pretty well post game, and it's it's not
good when Miguel Rojas is like one of your best
hitters in the second half, you know, but big credit
to him, you know, he does all the the right things.
(11:10):
That got a lot of key bunch down in the
past few weeks, and like it's just like dropping the ego,
you know and just playing as a team. That's just
like what they need to do compete now.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
Yeah, yeah, that's what they need to do. You know.
Speaker 9 (11:25):
In Anaheim, I was talking to Tim Salmon and Dino Ebol.
They Dino obviously longtime member of Mike's Soshia's coaching staff.
Tim Salmon a legend for the Angels, and he just
talked about how Mikesoshi would demand even the best of
players to give up at bats for the betterment of
the team. If you remember, if you're old enough, or
(11:48):
if you've heard about this, the Oakland A's and Angels
in the early two thousands would go at it. They
had Barry Zito, Mark Moulder, Tim Hudson and that was
their strength, not to mention Billy Kotch as their c
So they were like these padres in a certain way
when you have a Darbish or you know Michael King
or Dylan Cees on the mound and even Mike Sooshia
(12:11):
would bring his hitters into his office or he go
into the cage and demand from guys like Tim Salmon,
Garrett Anderson, Darrener's stad and be and tell them. And
this is the way Tim Salmon talked about. It's like,
I if you give us two runs, we will win
this game. You've got to do whatever it takes to
get two runs early. And I feel like that's the
(12:34):
approach the Dodgers have got to take here in San
Diego and when they face the Padres and whenever they
face a good team, because they just haven't been able
to do that. And I love that Miguel Rojas said
that we didn't hear that part of the answer, but
Miguel Rojas added that we've got to force the manager
(12:55):
to take the starting pitcher out. We can't allow the
manager to say it's time to come out, Meaning the
Dodgers have got to do a better job of getting
the pitch count up on starters and also doing more
damage early in games. They just haven't done that consistently.
Let's go out to Alfred in Uppland. You're on Dodger
(13:15):
Talk with David Vase. Say hi, Alfred, Hey.
Speaker 13 (13:19):
David, how you doing. You do a great job, by
the way.
Speaker 6 (13:24):
Thank you, Alfred. I appreciate it.
Speaker 13 (13:27):
Hey, I have a couple of points I want to make.
It seems to me like the Dodgers right now just
have a lack of just they don't have a lack
of energy there, they don't have a sense of urgency,
and they don't have a lack of focus. And then
the other thing is that the starting pitchers and all
the pictures basically are giving it too many walks. I
like to know the stats of how many runs they've
(13:49):
given up on waks this year. It sounds to me
a strong just too many. I like to know if
you can get that stat. I like to know how
many runs the Dodgers are given up on walks this year.
Seems like they've given too many. What do you think?
Speaker 9 (14:04):
Yeah, I agree with you. And that was the undoing
of Tyler Glass now tonight. And he was not throwing
a lot of first pitch strikes. He was throwing a
lot of pitches behind in the count. And that's not
something that is sustainable in a start. It's not sustainable
over the course of a season. But yeah, we'll look
into that for you, Alfred. I don't have that at
(14:25):
my fingertips, but certainly something to keep in mind. And
just a disappointing start for Tyler Glass now tonight as well.
He pitched so well since coming off the IL, had
an ERA of two point fifty and seven starts coming
into the game tonight, and again things were not feeling
perfect for him the way he was describing it, and
(14:45):
he let that affect him. And that's something that Dave
Roberts has challenged him not to allow to happen, and
he allowed it to happen, and Walks came back to
bite him in that fourth inning. But this is about
the Dodger offense this point. The lack of consistency is
something that the players are very aware of. Let's go
(15:06):
out to San Diego. Mark, You're on Dodger Talk live
from Petco Park.
Speaker 5 (15:10):
Hi, Mark, Hey David, thanks for taking the bullets tonight.
What a gross couple of nights. I have so many
things to say about the twenty twenty five team.
Speaker 10 (15:24):
Right now, it.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
Just not working. I can't recall how many three game
WEDN streaks they have since early July. Is at one
or two?
Speaker 6 (15:38):
That does not too many.
Speaker 9 (15:40):
Here, Well, I'll say this, Mark, I'll say this Mark, Mark,
I'll just say this.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
I know it's frustrating. I know they have not played.
Speaker 9 (15:50):
Well since the All Star break, but I will say this,
Let's withhold judgment until they get their players back. Because
they got their bullpen back, they got Tanner Scott back,
they got Kirby Yate's back, they got their starters back,
and they've been really good. Now let's see what happens
when Muncie Edmund and Kik come back and whether or
(16:12):
not that changes things. But I mean, there's a lot
of baseball to be played before all those three guys
are on the active roster. What else is bothering you?
Speaker 6 (16:22):
Mark? What else has got you down?
Speaker 5 (16:27):
You're close to the team, So I'd like you to
try to answer this. Honestly, does anyone on this roster
hate loosing as much as they love winning? I don't
get that vibe, and I think, well.
Speaker 6 (16:46):
I'll say this Mark.
Speaker 9 (16:47):
I did ask Mookie Betts that question in our pregame
interview yesterday, which you can listen to on the iHeartRadio app,
and I asked him, point blank, is the hungers as
great as it was a year year ago? And he
pushed back immediately and said absolutely. So I can only
take his his word, you know, And he says, the
(17:08):
hunger is still there, it just hasn't hasn't materialized. I mean,
MOOKI has had his worst offensive season in his career.
Taoscar Hernandez looks like a shell of himself from a
year ago. These are things that were not expected, to
say the least, and we need better at bets from Taoscar.
(17:30):
Hernandez feels like you know, obviously we celebrated him. There's
no bigger fan of Taoscar Hernandez than me, But we've
been focusing so much on Mookie Betts and Michael Confordo.
Does ta Oscar Hernandez get a free pass in this city?
I mean he has not. He has left a lot
to be desired.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
I agree with you, and I'm I'm in the camp
where he's got to be pushed back to left field
in October and October.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
How about how about tomorrow?
Speaker 9 (18:05):
They need they need Taoscar Hernandez in left field tomorrow,
not October.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
I want it to be nice about it.
Speaker 9 (18:14):
Well, I'm sorry, I'm done being nice. I mean, it's uh,
it's it's it's very obvious. There needs to be a change,
and I feel like it's coming, especially with Keith A
Hernandez returning. It gives the Dodgers a little bit more
uh roster versatility to be able to make that move,
but especially when Tommy Edmond returns because he's getting ready
(18:36):
to play center field. Got a run, Mark, thanks for
the phone call. Call back anytime. Eight sixty six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number Dodgers
fall to the Padres tonight five to one. They have
won the regular season series. So if there is a
tie on Game one sixty two or after Game one
sixty two, the Dodgers hold the tie breaker, they would
(18:57):
be the NLS champions, but they I certainly don't want
it to come down to that.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
When we continue.
Speaker 9 (19:03):
Here on Dodger Talk, we'll play Dave Roberts answer again
pointed comments regarding his offense and what needs to change.
And you also hear Mookie Betts set the record straight,
had that pregame conversation with him yesterday. In case you
missed it, we'll let you hear what Mookie Betts had
to say about that erroneous report in the La Times
by Kevin Baxter and how he's still upset about it.
(19:27):
Dodgers fall to the Padres tonight five to one on
a five to seventy LA Sports.
Speaker 4 (19:36):
On air at AM five seventy, online at AM five
seventy LA sports dot com, and available my podcast on
the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 6 (19:45):
This is Dodger Talk with David Masson.
Speaker 8 (19:50):
Another three to two pitch, Freeland hits it in the
air to right field.
Speaker 6 (19:54):
Indeed, top Tias back he's.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
At the Wall, it is gone. Alex Freeland stay hot.
He has gone deepen back to back games, and the
Dodgers have a life in the eighth. It's now three
to one.
Speaker 9 (20:12):
Alex Freeland has driven in both Dodger runs in the
first two games of this series. As the Dodger offense
goes down quietly again Tonight to Nester Cortes and the
Padres bullpen. San Diego regains a full game in first
place over the Dodgers after a five to one win,
and the Dodger offense needs to get things going here consistently.
(20:37):
Daniel Jewelers presents the home run forecast go to AM
five seventy. Lasports dot Com used the keyword home run
for your chance to win a fifty dollars Daniel S
Jeweler's gift card predicting the number of home runs in
the very next game. Daniel Jewelers own the dream. David
Vasse with you live from Peco Park in San Diego.
Alex Freeland hit his first career Major League home run
(21:01):
last night. Tonight, comes off the bench hits his first
career pinch hit home run for the Dodgers, and Dave
Roberts used him as an example after the game when
I asked him about his response to Miguel Rojas and
Will Smith the Green they need to make better adjustments
in game than they have recently.
Speaker 14 (21:22):
Yeah, I agree with what they're saying, and I think
it's sort of you know, this time of the season,
it's not about the mechanics your swing. It's about how
can how can I help the team win? And you know,
(21:45):
find a way to move the line forward, get hits,
spoil pitches, compete, and there's a different level of trying.
You know, I think everyone's trying, but I think that
just the next level of going with whatever swing you
(22:05):
have that particular night and fighting and willing yourself to
get some hits, get on base, create innings and score runs.
It's not a lack of talent. It's certainly not a
lack of try. But you know, we got to do more,
and you know that that's sort of what I see.
(22:30):
So I agree with what you know, those guys said,
And you know, there's a point in the season where
you're kind of trying to find your swing, and you
know we're at the end of August.
Speaker 11 (22:41):
And.
Speaker 14 (22:44):
You know, it's not about it's just about getting the
job done, you know, and finding a way to find
some production and might look ugly, but you know, we
got a kid who comes up and you know, he's
responsible for two of our runs in this series, you know.
So it's it's uh, you know, and this is just
(23:07):
fight and hunger from a young kid who's trying to stick,
you know. So you know, you look at the talent
in our room and you know, now obviously we've lost
the first two here. You know, Pavetis had a nice year.
But you know, regardless of you know what the game
plan is, and they have game plans as well, right,
(23:29):
and so there is a situation, like the guy said,
you do got to read and react and you got
to kind of understand what's happening in a ballgame and
make your adjustments.
Speaker 9 (23:42):
There was manager Dave Roberts in the office just about
thirty minutes ago and responding and agreeing with what two
of his veteran players said that they have to read
and react and make in game adjustments against pictures better
than what they have. And it's not just about your
individual swing. It's about what's best for the team and
(24:05):
finding a way to compete. And I'll compete that Pitcher.
I mean, there is no reason. I don't care about
Nestor Cortes's cutter. I don't care about his fastball. You
could talk about that all you want. You shouldn't let
Nestor Cortes do that to you. You're the Dodgers. You
have Otani Betts, Freeman, ta Oscar Hernandez. That just shouldn't happen.
(24:30):
Eight six six seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Let's go out to Ken, who is at Petco Park tonight. Hi, Ken,
you're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 5 (24:39):
Hey Dave, thanks for taking the call.
Speaker 2 (24:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (24:41):
I made the trip down the pet five four and
a half hours to get there, so I thought, well
it's worth the drive. I'll get here. And you know,
obviously everybody's talking about what went down tonight, and I
have to tell you to the.
Speaker 9 (24:56):
Oh Ken call back. You just went through Es Candido
sell hell right there. Eight six six nine seven two
five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers fall to the
Padres tonight, five to one. I will say this. Before
this road trip, I talked to Freddie Freeman, and Freddie
Freeman said they have changed things up in their Hitters meetings.
(25:19):
I actually shared that with you before the Dodgers went
out to Denver, and Freddie said, instead of having the
coaches tell the players, the hitters what their game plan
should be their approach, they flip the script and it's
up to the players now to do some homework and
be held accountable to each other. And every player gets
(25:42):
called upon in the hitters meeting before the first game
of every series and every game, and they are asked
to stand up and say, okay, what's your what's your
approach tonight against Nestor Cortez ta Oscar, what's your approach? Mookie,
what's your approach? And then the hitting coaches some scanning reports,
(26:02):
and you know whether or not they agree with that,
but they have changed certain things. But in game you
gotta be better. I remember during the twenty nineteen NLDS,
the Dodgers did not make in game adjustments Strasburg, Patrick Corbyn,
if you remember, they were pitching them backwards. The padres
(26:24):
in that NLDS, Blake Snell, you Darvishing company, they were
doing different things because the Dodger hitting coaches show these guys,
all right, this guy's gonna throw this certain pitch. Eighty
percent of the time in this count. Well, don't you
think the opponents know by now that's what the Dodgers do.
(26:45):
So they start doing things that are not the norm.
And that's where in game the Dodgers, from the hitters
to the coaches have got to make in game adjustments
or it's gonna get ugly in the postseason. It's easy
when Otani, Bets and Freeman are rolling. I mean it's easy,
but that's not the case. Even Otani gets out of
(27:07):
his strike strike zone. He had been doing a good
job up until the first two games of this series.
But you know, Mookie Betts hitting better. But you know
Dave Roberts was talking about not everybody, but certain guys
have got to start now giving team at bats, competing. Well,
I feel like Mooki has done that at times. I
(27:29):
feel like ta Oscar Hernandez needs to buy into that more.
But as a whole, the Dodgers need to be better
as an offense. Getting shut down by Nestor Cortez is uh,
it's shocking.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
It's shocking.
Speaker 9 (27:44):
Eight six six, nine, seven, two five seventy is the
phone number. Let's go out to. Now, here's something interesting.
You've heard about somebody with two last names. How about
a caller that has two cities Memphis in studio city.
You're on Dodger Talk Memphis.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Interesting, Hey David, how are you doing today?
Speaker 6 (28:06):
I'm doing good? But I like that.
Speaker 9 (28:08):
I like, uh, I like how you you have to uh,
two cities as a caller Tonight.
Speaker 6 (28:15):
How are you doing Memphis?
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Yeah? Thank you. I just had a few lingering thoughts
on my mind, one of them being about sho Hail Tawny,
and that's that he's shelfish. I feel like, I feel
like I constantly see him swinging on the first pitch,
even if it's out of his own and he's always
(28:38):
doing one handed swings this that that are not competitive
swings at all. And I feel like you're the team
leader you should be, and you're the leadoff batter, which
I don't think he should be, but he is, and
you need to start off the inning right. And when
he's doing it with a pop out or a lazy
ground ball or a not competitive strike out, every time,
(29:01):
it's just setting the ending up and the game up
for just a bad game.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
Okay, I understand that at times.
Speaker 9 (29:09):
I've seen that too, Memphis, but uh, you didn't bring
up last weekend. I believe in the first game of
the Padres series how he gave himself up and hit
the ball to the right side to move the runner over.
So he has done that, and look, sometimes every player
gets away from it. It's hard for me to criticize Otani,
but I understand what you're saying. He's done a lot
(29:32):
to help mask a lot of the other players not
being able to produce like they usually do. But I
understand what you're saying. We didn't see him chasing as
much outside of the strike zone last year thanks to
the phone call Memphis. Appreciate it. Eight six six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers
fall to the Padres tonight, five to one. Let's go
(29:55):
out to Las Vegas. Sergio, you're on Dodger Talk with
David Vass. Hey, Hi Sergio, Hey DV.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
Nice to be on with you again. Yeah, to Oscar
should not be given a pass old for seven five
strikeouts the first two games of this series. And then
my next comment DV Buddy Kennedy with an he ended
up today with sixty nine as his average.
Speaker 13 (30:20):
Why is.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
Dave Roberts, First of all, he sounds so sad in
the postgame uh interview there, But Freeland and Rojas should
be in the lineup as well as call thirty what
do you have? Thirty one games left? Enough's enough. I mean,
I understand he is out and we need Tommy and
(30:45):
we'll hold on.
Speaker 9 (30:47):
Hold on, Let's just talk about Buddy Kennedy over Alex
Freeland today. It's becoming obvious the Dodgers don't like the
matchups with Freeland hitting from the right side, But I
don't like the matchups with Buddy Kennedy hitting from the
right side either.
Speaker 6 (31:02):
So I'm with you.
Speaker 9 (31:03):
Alex Friedland should have started today. Buddy Kennedy's a fill
in player. We all know once the Dodgers get Key
k back, Edmund back, Munsie back, Buddy Kennedy likely is
not going to be on this roster. So he's a
filling guy. And I'm with you. I like I like
Freeland starting at third base. I like Freeland starting while
(31:24):
you're this then in your lineup.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Yeah, and let Skipper even he brought up Freeland. You
know a young kid that's looking to stick. Come on,
skip put him in, like you said, I mean, he
can't be any worse than.
Speaker 6 (31:38):
We put him in.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
He hit, but he should have put him in the
first inning, Dave, enough with twenty three and Buddy Kennedy being.
Speaker 7 (31:45):
In the lineup.
Speaker 4 (31:46):
Put the kid in there. Let him play if he
if he doesn't, he's.
Speaker 9 (31:49):
Been in the agioe. He's been in there almost every day.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (31:54):
I know he had his first taste of course field.
He's a rookie. I agree with you. I agree with you.
It's not like he's not playing him. He's playing him.
But I thought he should have started today. So let's
not get too extreme. It's not like he's not playing him.
Speaker 4 (32:15):
No, I understand, Dave, but play the hot hand is
what I'm saying. Thanks David.
Speaker 9 (32:19):
He hit a home run. He hit a home run,
But I'm with you. Thank you for the phone call.
Sergio eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy
is the phone number. Dodgers fall to the Padres tonight,
five to one. Nestor Cortes doing things that Nestor Cortes
shouldn't be doing to the Dodgers offense, but he did,
(32:39):
and with this bullpen, I know the Dodgers here, here's
something that I think you all should take away from
the first two games of this series and going back
to last weekend, we've heard so much about this great
Padres bullpen and how it's lights out as soon as
they come in, which is true, they're really good. But
(33:00):
Mike Shilt is using these guys a lot, even when
they're losing in games. I mean, he had Mason Miller
warming up in a four run game tonight with Adrian
Morrohane on the mound in the ninth inning. At some
point the gas tank is gonna run empty. Jason Adam morrohone.
They are in the top five of games innings appeared.
(33:23):
My point is that's a sidebar. My point is great bullpen,
but the Dodgers are the one team that I have
seen against this Padres bullpen that has made them look human.
Whether it's Jeremiah Estrada, whether it's Robert Suarez, whether it's
Mason Miller. Last night, I think we I don't know
if that was talked about last night, but great bullpen,
(33:47):
but they are human and the Dodgers when they lock
in in these last two games have certainly made them
look very human and not unhittable. Let's go out to
Heather in Utah. You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing, Heather?
Speaker 15 (34:03):
Hey, Dave's so good to hear your voice. I haven't
called in for a little bit. I usually only like
to call in after wins.
Speaker 13 (34:08):
But here we are.
Speaker 15 (34:11):
I got kind of a two parter for you. I'm
very frustrated, just like most of our fan base and
sitting here in my Dodgers here frustrated watching the game.
But I've also got a lot of hope. And the
first part of that is the frustration is we just
look like we're sleepwalking, like I don't know what we're
doing anymore. The players just don't have a lot of urgency.
(34:32):
I don't want to be a dead horse. I know
a lot of people have already said some of the
same things that I'm probably was planning to say. But
we got to play these kids that are excited, that
have the urgency and that they're hungry for these wins.
And I love our guys. I'm wearing my Mooki bed
sweatshirt right now. I love Mooki, I love Freddy. I
(34:53):
remember the moment he hit the walk off Grands. I'm
sitting with my family. I love Otwani. These guys are amazing.
We have the bill and dollar payroll. We should be
winning these games and.
Speaker 12 (35:03):
Yet we're not.
Speaker 15 (35:04):
However, it is August, and there is hope. I think
that the Padres, they're a good team, but they get
up to play us. I mean, they have rally towels
for tonight, for crying out loud, and it's not even
a World Series or a playoff game. Are they built
to hold first place? Or is this just a summer
high from the Padres? Do you think? I want to
ask you this, Do you think that we actually have
(35:24):
hope to come back?
Speaker 13 (35:25):
Because I do.
Speaker 15 (35:26):
I think we're just really frustrated right now in the
middle towards the end of August. What do you think?
Speaker 9 (35:32):
No, of course, I mean, Heather, the Dodgers are going
to be in the postseason. It would help them out
if they wanted the division, and it would help them
out if if they were one of the top two
seats to avoid a wildcard round. But with this starting pitching,
even in that scenario, they have a very good chance
of advancing. And it kind of reminds me talking to
(35:54):
people around the two thousand, the last.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
Team to repeat in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 9 (35:59):
They did enough to get to the postseason and win
the division, get into the playoffs, and then that's when
you know, obviously the veteran experience would take over. It
kind of feels that way with this team. Once October
rolls around, I feel like they are going to surprise
(36:20):
a lot of people. But they understand you can't just
flip a switch. They got to start getting into that
mindset offensively. So there was a lot of talk about
that in the clubhouse tonight amongst players Dave Roberts, a
lot of talk about that things are going to change.
Trust me, Heather, and you'll call back and you'll feel
happy wearing that Mookie Beds sweatshirt and jerseys.
Speaker 15 (36:44):
Always will And yeah, I appreciate it. I know that
they need to have that urgency. Like I remember when
Trey Turner went in and everybody up with the Wolf
of Wall Street.
Speaker 13 (36:53):
You know, it's like, Heather, where is that Let's go?
Let's go.
Speaker 6 (36:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (36:57):
I could tell you they have that urgency because every
day before the game, five hours before the game, Pahz
Freeman bets Rojas, They're all out here putting in the work.
If I stop seeing those guys, that's when the urgency
has gone away. Thanks for the phone call, Heather, appreciate it.
You know, if they don't put in the work like
(37:18):
they did from day one last year and day one
this year, then I would be concerned. But these guys
are putting in the work. Speaking of Mookie Bets, we
talked about this when the team was in Denver, but
Mooki Betts spoke for the first time regarding the bad
report that he was in Dave Roberts's office with Andrew
(37:39):
Friedman after that poor game by Taoscar Hernandez asking him
to move back to right field. We found out it's
not true, and Mooki wanted to set the record straight,
so we talked on sports Net LA and right here
on a five to seventy LA sports.
Speaker 3 (37:58):
People are making stuff up. You know, somebody's in there
just trying to be the first one the reporter story
of their own. So that's completely false. I go in
there to talk to Doc. Me and Doc have like
this mentor father son type relationship, and I've been I
talked to him all the time about my swing and
how it's coming along, and this, that and the other.
(38:21):
So somebody in there was just kind of guessing and
making stuff up. So whoever made that up, you know,
you need to be careful with what you're reporting because
that was just I was in there talking about my
swing and how it's coming along. So that has nothing
to do with going back to right field.
Speaker 9 (38:33):
How shocked were you when you started seeing that pop
up all over and it wasn't even true.
Speaker 6 (38:39):
Very shocked.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
I mean it's you know, I understand reporters have to
do their job, but I mean, you don't have to
spread lives. You don't have to just make stuff up,
you know, especially I'm a very open and honest person.
Just come talk to me and come ask me. I
don't appreciate things being made up, you know, so, but
it kind of is what it is.
Speaker 6 (38:58):
I could douch for that. You're very approach.
Speaker 3 (39:00):
Yeah, I mean, I feel like you just come ask
me and I'll be on. I'm very honest person, very
very honest.
Speaker 9 (39:05):
All right, there's Mookie Betts and you can hear the
full conversation on the iHeartRadio app and sports net. LA
may Or may not have posted it on their Twitter
and Instagram account, but yeah, he was very honest and
still very upset over the fact that you know a
guy that's very accessible, accessible and approachable, like MOOKI is
(39:26):
that this reporter would just go off and make something
up when he had no clue what was being discussed
in that meeting in Dave Roberts's office in Denver. But
MOOKI set the record straight. He's not going to right
field right now. I asked him, and you can listen
to it whether or not he's open to that move
if the Dodgers approached him, which they have not. And
(39:49):
like I said before, there are other ways to make
the Dodger outfield defense fit better than the way it's
fitting right now. You can move ta Oscar Hernandez to
left field. You can move Andy Pajez to right field.
You can have Tommy Edmund Alex call Keith a Hernandez
play center field. So there are ways. And last night,
(40:10):
I'll say this since I wasn't on the show, that
was the best defensive game I have seen Mookie Betts
play shortstop. There may have been one other game at
home I forgot against two, but that was the best
defensive game I've seen Mookie Betts played shortstop going back
to last year. So he's doing enough to stay there.
(40:33):
Just got to get the offense going as well. That'll
do it for us tonight on Dodger Talk. Want to
say thank you again to Joe Davis, Oral Hers Scheizer,
Mike Levy, Stu Mitchell and the guys back in the
studio for having me fill in for Kirsten Watson. I'll
be doing that one more time tomorrow. It will be
Yamamoto on the mound for the Dodgers going up against
(40:54):
Nick Pavetta Morongo Casino. Dodgers on Deck begins at noon,
first pitch at one ten. Thanks to Dwayne McDonald out
here at Petco Park, Thanks to Colin Yee back at
our Burbank studios, and thanks to you for listening. In
case you missed any of the show or our pregame
conversations with Mookie Bets yesterday Tanner Scott. Today, you can
(41:15):
find it on the iHeartRadio app once again. The final
score from Petco Park in San Diego. The Padres take
over first place with a five to one win.
Speaker 6 (41:26):
Have a great rest of your Saturday. We'll talk to
you tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (41:29):
See yay playing
