Speaker 1 (00:01):
One thing about this gene is the invisible and tangibles
that they have.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
This team is really becoming a family.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Let's not play one on Tom.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Let's wind it.
Speaker 4 (00:11):
I love writing me these guys after the show. So
just thank you, give me are.
Speaker 5 (00:15):
Your attention, your fire, not a pisson.
Speaker 6 (00:17):
This is world champion, Dodger, world champion thing.
Speaker 5 (00:21):
Put a small soft time they get up people what
they want to die in a row two is special.
I'm like, yeah, it's not a headache. One of a con.
This ball's gone. You ready to go?
Speaker 6 (00:33):
Hell time, Go to the show. Grab your phone to
get in on the show called eight six six nine
eighty seven two five seven and go to the show.
And now your host of Dodger Talk, David Vasse.
Speaker 5 (00:47):
We are live at Dodgers Stadium after the Dodgers win
the first game of this three game series against the Reds,
shutting out Cincinnati seven to nothing. We have phone lines
open eight six seven, two five seventy. We are going
to check in with Jose Motive between now and the
top of the hour. We will head downstairs to get
(01:09):
postgame reaction as well, and you will hear from Keik
Hernandez who was activated for tonight's game, but not did
not get in, but he is expected to start the
next two games of this series against the Reds and
the Dodgers. With the Mariners beating the Padres tonight nine
to six, have a one game lead in the NL West,
(01:32):
and hands down, tonight was the best start of Imisian's
young career. Had never completed seven innings in his major
league career. When seven scoreless Tonight, scattered two hits and
tied a career high of ten strikeouts. He gave the
Dodgers everything they needed, and Andy Pai has gave Imit
(01:55):
Sheian what he needed. A little run support early in
the game. Can't tell you how important it is for
most teams to score first, but when the Dodgers score first,
it means a lot. The Dodgers now are forty seven
and sixteen when they score first, and they struck first
(02:15):
thanks to Andy Paie Haz hitting the first home run
of the night off a Hunter Green in the third inning.
Then Piz after a double by Michael Conforto in the
fifth inning, hit a first pitch slider for his second
home run of the game and gave Emmit Sheen more
than enough to work with as he had a three
to nothing lead going into the sixth inning, So that
(02:37):
was big. Emitt Shean and Andy pie Has it was
their night, but I believe it was Mookie Betts his
seventh inning. MOOKI made a great play in the hole
to rob key Brian Hayes to end the top of
the seventh and then he homered in the bottom of
the seventh inning. On the night the Dodgers gave away
a replica Mookie Betts World Series ring, you were a
(03:00):
Smookie after the game. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, you know,
I do what.
Speaker 7 (03:04):
I can, As I always say, I always do what
I can to help help the boys win, and tonight
I was able to do it on both sides.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
It feels like that's where your head's at right now,
just every night, just trying to find a way.
Speaker 7 (03:15):
Yeah, I mean, that's that's really it, you know, going
through UH, going through this year is really just kind
of taught me a lot about myself and really kind
of about the game, like how to play the game.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
And so I have kind of.
Speaker 7 (03:27):
A new perspective on UH on just every day and
just really trying to trying to enjoy today.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Have you seen what you guys were talking about the
last two games, about having competitive at bats one through nine. Yeah,
I mean we we did.
Speaker 7 (03:41):
You know, sometimes it doesn't result in hits, but you know,
the last couple of games have But even you know,
earlier we were struggling a little bit in San Diego,
but I feel like we were having decent at bats, just
coming up, not not getting the hits when we needed it.
But we just keep going and keep playing Dodger baseball
and just keep applying pressure.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
Everything should be okay.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
Way to deliver on your World Series ring giveaway night,
Thank you, sir.
Speaker 7 (04:04):
We need to have another one next.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
Year, all right, Yeah, that's a great plan. Mookie Betts
was smiling, And certainly the Dodgers want to become the
first team since the two thousand Yankees to repeat his
champions But a long way to go. Thirty more in
the regular season eight six six none, eight seven two
five seventy. I want to just get ahead of this.
(04:26):
I know there's always some sort of criticism of Michael
Confordo has not been his best year, but two doubles
tonight he doubled in front of Pa Haz His two
run home run in the fifth inning and yesterday his
big walk led to Dalton Rushing having the opportunity to
hit that go ahead three run home run eight six
(04:48):
six eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Let's go out to Jason who is at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Jason,
you're on Dodger.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Talk, David.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
How you doing.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
I'm doing great. Great to be back hosting the show.
Speaker 8 (05:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (05:02):
So, first off, great outing by shan joinnovatings.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
But I want to talk about Andy Potez, who had
just a monster game tonight and.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Came within an eyelash of.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
That third over.
Speaker 9 (05:16):
I was in the field level tonight, had you could
see the flags blowing in on his final at bat,
and I think the wins got that one, it would
be three whole runs.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
Yeah, the ball was not traveling that well tonight. And
the Dodgers have been kind of frustrated with the humidity
in southern California because that's the way it felt the
first two nights in San Diego until yesterday, and it
kind of felt the same way tonight. So yeah, you're right,
a day game or any other type of night at
Dodgers Stadium. He has three home runs and his second
(05:48):
one probably goes a little further deeper into those field
seats down the left field line, but either way, it
was a good night for Andy pot Has. Thanks for
the phone call, Jason. Eight six six in two five
seventy is the phone number. Dodgers beat the Reds tonight
seven to nothing. It was also Emit Shean's night, a
(06:08):
career night, his best game as a major leaguer tonight
for Imit Shean. Let's head downstairs to the Dodger club
house to hear from Shean on sports and at LA.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, I think so. We've been putting in some work
the last couple of weeks, and I think it didn't
really like show on the first couple, but now it's
starting to start and show a little more.
Speaker 6 (06:28):
With the execution, would just say it's been the biggest
difference then.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Just executing consistently, uh, throwing everything with conviction instead of
you know, just try to place it and that stuff.
Mark and Connor have helped me a lot with and
the strength strength coaches have helped me a lot with too.
Speaker 10 (06:41):
Yeah, no career.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Long outings in your last two starts tied your career
high for strikeouts.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Is this just snowball.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
Now the confidence just starts to spike.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
I think, so yeah, I mean, definitely have to build
on it. Try to just keep the the same progress
we've been doing. Keep that going for the next one.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Okay, for you, you get the defense that you gone,
especially left right, we're gonna do.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
It's huge. I mean there were a few balls there
where I was like, I thought they're gonna be home runs,
and then made some plays at the wall, So yeah,
they're they're a big time today.
Speaker 5 (07:11):
How fun is that one here?
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Just twenty had through or six minutes.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
It's pretty fun. It's a lot more fun than watching
ball over the fence, for sure. But yeah, you didn't feel.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Like you were going kind of toe to toe with
Hunter Green.
Speaker 6 (07:23):
I know obviously you gave up some of those home
mon especially Andy, but just were you feeling kind of
a momentum in that match was specifically?
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Not really, I mean, he's a great pitcher. I didn't
really think about who was on the mound for them today, honestly,
But yeah, he's a great pitcher.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
There's a Machian on sports net LA, and yes, he
got good outfield defense tonight from Michael CONFORDO and Taoscar Hernandez.
So a great all around night by Michael Confordo, a
great night defensively for tao Oscar Hernandez. And Dave Roberts
said after the game that he believed tonight was the
most complete game the Dodgers have played in quite some time,
(08:02):
and it's hard to argue with that, especially the carryover
in offense from yesterday's game, where Dave Roberts and the
players obviously had conversations amongst each other that they needed
to have more competitive at bats and in the words
of Miguel Rojas, Will Smith and Dave Roberts, everybody needs
(08:24):
to stop trying to find their perfect swing with thirty
games to go and just take what you got that
night and compete. And it seems like the last two
games the Dodgers have really heeded that call from each other.
And that's what's so special about that group. They have
respect for each other, respect for the veterans, and some
(08:44):
of the younger guys are maybe reminding some of the
other veterans on the team to get back to that.
Because Dave Roberts pointed out Alex Freeland yesterday, Dalton Rushing
battled for that three run, home run. So the young
kids are certainly reminding not only guys like Andy pa Has,
but maybe some of the other veterans as well. Eight
(09:06):
six six seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers shut out the Reds tonight seven to nothing. Let's
go out to Sherman Oaks. Eric, You're on Dodger Talk
Live from the stadium.
Speaker 8 (09:17):
Hi, Eric, Hey, David, how you doing tonight?
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Fantastic? I feel like the Dodgers are about to start cooking.
Speaker 8 (09:26):
Eric, I feel like it too. You know, the Padres
are playing a tough team in Seattle. This is a
great time for us to leap ahead in the standings
and make him eat our dust. You know what I'm saying.
I think that tonight was a great night to be
a Dodger Van. What a spectacular show put on by
the ball club. Michael Conforto over in left field and
(09:50):
ta Oscar and right field to start off this game strong.
It was. It was so much fun to watch him.
And when those balls, you know, got hit to ta
Oscar in right field, my heart jumped a little bit.
But he was filled them with ease, it looked like,
so I was happy to hear you say that he
was taking some batting practice, you know, fielding batting practice
(10:12):
out there, and you know, taking some fly balls before
the game, you know, So I was really.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Yeah, every coach will tell you that it's one thing
to take fly ball practice from a coach hitting fungos
or you know, some of those machines that you see
shooting the ball into the sky. The best practice is
getting out to your position in the outfield and taking
fly balls during batting practice. And ta Oscar did that,
(10:38):
and certainly I think, uh, he got a wake up
call at Corsfield last week and he's played better defense
ever since that poor night out there. So yeah, he
has a lot of professional pride and he certainly knows
what's at stake. Eight six, six, nine eighty seven two
five seventy is the phone number. Dodgers shut out the
(10:58):
Reds tonight seven to nough and thanks to Ellie de
la Cruz as well, because Ellie is such a dynamic player,
but he did not make a routine play where the
Dodgers took control of this game even more in the
sixth inning. Talk about defense, right, you don't give another
team extra outs, especially with two outs in the bases loaded,
(11:20):
Ellie de la Cruz let a ball go between his legs,
A routine ground ball hit right at him, and he
just picked his glove up too soon, and the Dodgers
scored two runs and the Reds dugout was certainly deflated
after that. I want to remind you you have a
great opportunity to meet world champion manager Dave Roberts this
(11:42):
Thursday at the Verizon Store in Pasadena, located at three
sixty eight South Lake Avenue, from five to six. The
event starts at four o'clock, so show up early for
your chance to win tickets and a lot of merchandise.
That's this Thursday with Dave Roberts in Pasadena, all to
you by Verizon. The Dodgers not only win tonight, but
(12:04):
the Padres lose in Seattle nine to six, and cal
Rawley hit his fiftieth home run of the season.
Speaker 11 (12:12):
So JP ready the wind up band the three to
two other win of col swinging a well hit ball
deep the left field head into the upper deck, State
Fair al Per Deck. Goodbye Baseball lover.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
Fifty for cal Raley.
Speaker 11 (12:27):
He becomes one of only thirty three members of the
fifty home run club and the magical season just continuous
for cal Raley.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Cal Rawley helps power the Mariners to another win that
was courtesy of Seattle Sports seven to ten. Rick Riz
on the call for the Mariners radio as the Mariners
help out the Dodgers tonight by beating the Padres nine
to six, and cal Rawley becomes the first switch hitter
to hit fifty home runs since Mickey Mantle. Pretty impressive,
(13:03):
but I will warn you don't get sucked into cal
Rawley having the best offensive year by any catcher in
baseball history. That happened in nineteen ninety seven, right here
in La Mike Piazza was robbed of the National League MVP.
It went to Larry Walker at Corsefield instead of a
(13:24):
catcher that hit three sixty two two hundred and one
hits forty home runs, and somehow, some way, an outfielder
at Corsfield won the MVP that year. Maybe Mike Piazza
didn't say hello enough times to the voting writers that year,
but he certainly was robbed. And that was even look
at the advanced metrics. That was the greatest offensive season
(13:49):
by any catcher in baseball history. Nineteen ninety seven Mike
Piazza cal Rawly, by the way, has one hundred and
fifty three strikeout and only one hundred and nineteen hits.
Do you know how many times Mike Piazza struck out
in nineteen ninety seven? Seventy seven times. Let me know
(14:10):
who had a better year. Let's go out to Jerry
and Moore Park. You're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 9 (14:14):
How you doing, Jerry, I'm doing fine, Thank you very much. Listen,
this is a good segue from your discussion about outfield
practice with Hernandez, and right now I'm speaking about Conforto's play,
which everybody's you know, they're cheering and it looks good.
But the problem is, and this is true with Major
league ball players. I see it all the time. They
don't go after balls over their heads properly. You have
(14:36):
to run to the wall. If you run to the
wall and then come back for a ball or wait
for it, your play is remarkably easier. They're all trying
to time it. He was a good four feet from
that wall when he jumped. You have to go to
the wall. You look at highlights throughout the league. You
see guys jumping all the time. The ball falls the
ball comes down to the side.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Of them that they could catch that ran to the wall.
Speaker 5 (15:00):
I think outfielders do that when the ball and they
are allowed to run into that spot. I just think
the two plays that were made tonight, ta Oscar may
not have gotten a great jump on it. He may
have been limited physically to do what you're saying, but
it's uh. I think every fly ball is a little
bit different. But yes, outfielders try to get to that spot.
(15:22):
Thanks for the phone call, Jerry. We have a great
outfielder in the booth for every Dodgers radio game, Rick Monday.
He knew how to play the position in all three
really well and certainly was fundamentally sound.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (15:34):
One season, when Mike Marshall was called up as a rookie,
Tommy Losorda asked Rick Monday to try to mentor him.
It went, all right, let's go out to Iliana, who
is at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Iliana, you're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 8 (15:50):
Hey DV.
Speaker 9 (15:51):
How we do it.
Speaker 5 (15:53):
Doing good? I got a good feeling right now about
this Dodger team.
Speaker 9 (15:58):
Hey, listen, played every game we played tonight, we'd be
way further ahead in our division, But I am so
happy that I was at the game's sight.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
With my family.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
We caught a really good one with my niece and nephew.
Speaker 10 (16:12):
It was a really fun one.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
I think we can lay off the gas a little.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
Bit on Michael Knporto.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
I'm really happy with how he played as well.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
And I think our team entirely.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Had some really incredible defensive plays tonight.
Speaker 5 (16:24):
It made it really exciting, yeah, for sure. And look,
this is a veteran team Ileana. They know what's coming
down the stretch here in the next thirty games. You're
starting to see a Mookie Bets that is heating up
and not getting too far ahead of himself being where
his feed are. You're seeing ta Oscar Hernandez taking the
(16:44):
challenge and trying to get better out there, and you're
getting healthier. That's the biggest thing. You're getting healthy. The
Dodgers got Key Hernandez back, They're gonna be getting Max
Muncie back on the next road trip. Tom Y Edman
is not that far behind. So there's a lot of
reasons to be optimistic because this team knows how to
(17:05):
navigate one hundred and sixty two games, and they certainly
have done that. Speaking of KEYK Hernandez. When we continue
on Dodger Talk, you will hear from Key K and
also we'll check in with Jose Motive plus more of
your phone calls at eight six, six, nine eighty seven
two five seventy. Dodgers shut out the Reds tonight seven
(17:25):
to nothing on AM five to seventy LA Sports.
Speaker 6 (17:33):
On air at AM five seventy, online at AM five
seventy LA sports dot com, and available by podcast on
the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
This is Dodger Talk with David bassa oh A, three
two pins, spy on a hammer, d platfol Way backing
down home run, Andy Bye. Here's twenty second of a season,
no doubt or to left and the Dodgers have a
(18:03):
one nothing league. Andy Pie has loves Dodgers Stadium. Eighteen
of his twenty two home runs this year have been
hit right here at Dodgers Stadium, two of them. Tonight
he drives in four runs and the Dodgers shut out
the Reds seven to nothing. Daniels Jewelers presents the home
(18:24):
run forecast to go to AM five to seventy lasports
dot com. Use the keyword home run for your chance
to win a fifty dollars Daniels Jewelers gift card predicting
the number of home runs in the next game. Daniels
Jewelers own the dream we will hear from Jose Mota
at the top of the hour. Phone lines are open
at eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy.
(18:46):
But before today's game, the Dodgers designated for assignment Buddy Kennedy,
who only played seven games for the Dodgers and was
one for seventeen. He was somewhat of a roster filler
until they got guys like Tommy Edmund next month. See
in today's key Player, keyk Hernandez Back. Key K activated
off the injury list after aggravating sounds like a nerve
(19:10):
in his left elbow when he slid head first during
the Dodgers road trip in Cleveland in May, and uh,
you know, he played through it, but once he went
on the il there was some concern from Key K
himself about whether or not he would be able to return.
Speaker 10 (19:30):
Uh, I mean, yes, thank you. It feels good to
be back. I got to a point where I didn't
know if I was it was gonna happen. I mean,
we were pretty close from it not happening, but uh yeah,
just happy to be back. That was a very frustrating
month because there was not much I could do for
my injury. There are some procedures that I went through
(19:52):
that didn't do anything. I went through four shots in
a month, and first three didn't do anything, and luckily
the fourth one was the answer and I was after
the last shot, I was paying free like four days afterwards,
and I mean it was I almost cried in the
(20:12):
morning because it was the first morning that I woke
up paint free.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Uh and uh yeah, I've little after that.
Speaker 10 (20:18):
It was a couple of days after that started swinging
two weeks ago to be exacting on Monday. So yeah,
it's been a quick bramp up.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
But I'm just about to be back with the boys.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
Four shots. How many players would do that to come
back to play baseball. Not too many. There's been a
lot of guys that have done a lot less and
shut it down for the year, but not Key k Hernandez.
He knows how special this team is and how special
it could be to become the first team in twenty
(20:49):
five years to repeat his champions That's why he went
through all that agony to find a way back. And look,
I know key K does a lot of wacky stuff,
but at the heart of key K, he's a baseball
player that loves the game. And nobody is tougher than
Keyk hernandez Or He's one of the toughest guys. And
it's it says a lot about him to go through
(21:12):
all that to come back to be part of the team.
And the team needs him. They need what he does,
and they need him when it gets to October, and
they need his leadership. He really emerged as a leader
during last year's postseason run, and he was asked as
well before today's game what finally forced him to go
(21:32):
on the IL because he was trying to play through
it for at least three weeks.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Ah.
Speaker 10 (21:38):
I mean, I think if you look at the numbers
my last month that I played, you know, I haven't
been the most prolific hitter in the world, but I'm
also not a sub one hundred hitter. For a month,
hey got very challenging. He got to the point where
I felt like I couldn't catch up to the fastball,
and then when I was making the right dismans to
be able to catch up to the fastball, and I
(22:02):
had no no, uh what do you call it? Uh,
I couldn't adjust to the breaking pitches. So it was
one or the other. And it was just, you know,
it's hard to live that way instead of just you know, hitting,
and uh yeah, I played till basically I felt like
I couldn't even hold the bat anymore. And I mean
it was kind of dumb on my end, but I've
always felt that if I feel like I could play,
(22:26):
I'm not gonna go on the il. And you know,
by the time we went in and looked for the MRIs,
a little too late, but uh.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
Yeah, all right. There was Key k Hernandez. Before today's game,
he was activated, and Dave Roberts said earlier that keyk
Hernandez will be in the starting lineup each of the
next two nights. The Dodgers are facing right hander Nick
Martinez tomorrow night and are going to face left hander
(22:53):
Nick Lodolo. He is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday, and
they have not officially made that as their starter, but
Lodolo is lined up to pitch on Wednesday out of
Damien High School in Laverne. So keyk is starting the
next two games, and it'll be great to see him
back out there. Eight six six, seven two five seventy
(23:15):
is the phone number. Dodgers shut out the Reds tonight
seven to nothing. Let's check in with our guy, Jose Moda.
Speaker 6 (23:22):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Mota.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
After hearing what you heard from keyk Hernandez Jose four
shots to try to get that left elbow to cooperate.
How many players do you know that we go through
all that?
Speaker 2 (23:39):
Not many players. I mean, this guy loves to play
the game. We knew that something just was not right
with Kik on his approach to what he was singing
the bat into some pitches when they were like in
the perfect location. But so glad because we know what
he injects into this ball club immediately, just with his
presence and being active even in the lineup and obviously
in the clubhouse in the dugout.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
What did you think about Emma Shean tonight his best
start as a major leaguer.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
First thing I thought was that he threw the ball
with a lot of confidence and his command was the
best off scene since his return. You know, and you
have talked to many players, many pictures coming back from surgery,
and velocity is one thing to measure and make things
off of, but the command is a lasting you acquire
and you have to go and bounce through it and
(24:26):
go through some doubts, go through some issues with walking
people sometimes not knowing where the ball is going. His
out in Colorado was okay, I mean just okay, and
he battled through their conditions over there. But tonight it
was like the best off scenement as a big leaguer
because he threw everything early, and that's what pitchers do
to get a feel for what it's working and what's not,
(24:46):
and where it's landing, how it was moving, all those
kinds of things, and especially Dave, how hitters reacting today.
He pitched. The strikeouts are great, wonderful, got the temper
man he was a complete pitcher. Part economical, obviously things
would have been different is some players are not made
in the outfield. But it doesn't matter now because he
was pitching too some contact at times when he needed to.
But he was able to get ahead and put guys
(25:08):
behind with three different pitches tonight, and it was the
best I've seen with that changeup.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Also, really good plays by the corner outfielders tonight, Michael
Confordo and Taoscar Hernandez. How encouraging is it for the
Dodgers to play this type of complete game and coming
off yesterday and everything that was said before and after
Saturday night's game, for them to put together these type
(25:32):
of at bats for a second straight game.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
It's big day because we can base so many things
just based on results and say there it is again, right,
But think about the urgency that Taoscar has showed in
the outfield as of late, and what happened well in
plays a couple of plays they got to him. They
were put out publicly. As Matager says something about it,
and Michael Conforta too, is he's fighting for playing time
right now. There's no doubt about it. But it's encouraging
(25:57):
to see that you have the same athletes out there. Okay,
And just a little emphasis on a couple of things.
Could be just taking balls off the bottom beat to
which Gags gives a good idea on how the ball's traveling,
not just under the conditions of the field or wherever
city you're at, but also to get a big jump,
to get a first step. First step is the key.
You can take a bat route and sometimes you have
(26:18):
a good first step and there's a good chance they're
going to catch a baseball. A lot of outfielders like
to react to Let me get to that spot and
find the baseball and react from there. But it doesn't
matter how your legs, you're feeling, how old you are,
how only been around, how long you've been doing things
one way, there's always a chance to improve. And anytime
we hear players about you know, players talk about stepping
up and taking to the next level. Sometimes the next
(26:39):
level comes before the game, not in the game, because
you want to be reactive in the game and have
the ability to say, I prepare for this, I'm going
to react to it. Now have to adjust. But certainty,
the work never stops. We know the coaching staff and
Dave Roberts pay attention to all these details and it's
paying off, and you got thirty to go and you
can now stop working to make sure that those results
continue to read there.
Speaker 5 (27:00):
Does it feel like the Dodgers have found something here
as far as just a different mindset? How good of
a position are they on this home stand to possibly
leave here before they go out on another East Coast
road trip at least a couple of games ahead of
first place.
Speaker 2 (27:19):
To a couple of guys to that, here's a mentality. Okay,
you got to expect the Powders to continue to play
good baseball. That's number one. Don't get cut up in
the Potters. Let them do whatever they're going to do.
Control your own destiny. But I'm going to go back
to something that Clayton Kershel said on this show after
the first win against the Potters. And I'm the sweep right,
and he said, we're fine, right, And I said, do
(27:39):
you interpret that? Guys? We've been here before. No need
to panic. This season is not going to pay for tomorrow.
That carries day from one series to the other when
you have to bounce back. Is like, we've been there before,
But what do we have to do? Things are just
not going to come to you because you are the
Dodgers or your world champion, whatever it is. But you
know what you have in that clubhouse. And I think
that's where maybe coming from curse was not taken right
(28:02):
by some people. But he's like, we're fine, guys. I mean,
this is gonna be just fine.
Speaker 3 (28:06):
Now.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
On top of that too, let me just tell you this,
as Augers have not their best baseball, and as they
saw six games in ten days against the Potters, they
beat the Potters four out of sake. So you tell
me if there's a team that does not know what
to do when they need to Surny. We want a
little more linear in terms of the success and how
(28:26):
they react to things. But we know they know what
they have. And Sonny, we go out and take care
at business, with all the doubts, and you beat your
potter's face of face four to six. I think that's
a statement, all.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
Right, Jose. We'll see if they can double down on
that statement tomorrow night. They got to keep it going.
Thanks a lot for checking in. We'll see you tomorrow
at Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Shamput me on mine willios.
Speaker 5 (28:49):
There he goes, Jose Mota, part of the Dodgers Spanish
radio broadcast. And look, how about Clayton Kershaw, the oldest
guy in this rotation, or if he prefers me to
say longest, tenured, most experienced, I don't have to say
the oldest, but the oldest starting pitcher in this rotation
is going on regular rest. I believe he might be
(29:13):
the first one in quite some time to go on
regular rest, so Otani can have Wednesday start and the
Dodgers have a day off on Thursday, so they can
line it up that way. That says a lot about Kershaw.
I mean, this guy is the best picture of his generation,
and he's willingly pitching on regular rest for the betterment
(29:36):
of the rotation to allow Otani to start on Wednesday
evening here at Dodgers Stadium. That's team. Let's go out
to Arizona. Mike, you're on Dodger Talk with David vasse Hi.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
Mike, Hey, hey, David evening. Uh, great game tonight. I thought,
like Dave Roberts said, they played a complete game. My
dad always he called that type of baseball domino baseball,
because your starting pitcher goes out there, he sets the tone,
(30:09):
then he gets backed up by good defense. Then the
defense creates confidence at the play, then they start scoring runs.
It's just a domino effect. Before you know, it's a
crooked number. I thought they played a great game, and
if they continue to play like this, they'll continue to
win series and they'll end up winning the West, and
(30:31):
then you know, I'll just have to find a way
to win eleven games in October.
Speaker 5 (30:36):
I will I agree with you, Mike, but I think
the calls would be a little bit different if Lie
de la Cruz makes a routine play in the sixth inning,
because the Dodgers would have stranded the bases loaded. In
an inning that they had bases loaded and nobody out
and Hunter Green out of the game, this game might
have been different. There might have been a different tone
(30:58):
to the phone calls. But they did have a golden
opportunity there that the Reds gifted them.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
That's baseball, though, you know what I mean. It's baseball.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
I know, but there is a lot of reactionary, knee
jerk armchair quarterbacks that don't see things that way. But
it's not baseball when you have a great player like
Ellie de la Cruz allow a ball to go through
his legs. And I will point this out as well, Mike,
the best shortstop tonight at Dodger Stadium was not Ellie
(31:29):
de la Cruz. It was the best right fielder maybe
in baseball history that is playing outstanding shortstop in Mookie Betts.
No argument there, all right, Mike, thank you for the
phone call. Think about that. Everybody always spins it a
negative way. How about looking at it this way. Mookie
(31:52):
Betts is doing something this year that no other player
in baseball history has ever done, being the best right fielder,
certainly of the last twenty five years, and then moving
to shortstop at thirty two and playing it at a
high level. Uh, if you're a big believer in the metrics,
(32:15):
it says that Mookie Betts is the second best defensive
shortstop in Major League Baseball this side of Taylor Walls
in Tampa Bay. So in the last three four games,
we have seen Mooki take it up to another level
defensively at shortstop. So instead of having erroneous reports about
(32:37):
him being asked to move to right field, how about
celebrating the fact that he's a really good shortstop and
all of a sudden, now his season is starting to
come together at the right time. Let's go out to
Justin who is at Dodger Stadium. Hi, Justin, You're on
Dodger Talk. What ub Dave living the dream? Justin?
Speaker 10 (33:00):
What?
Speaker 4 (33:00):
I just want to say? It was beautiful tonight. This
is the hood, by the way, it was beautiful tonight
to see Gavin getting his ring. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
didn't want to, you know, name drop it, but I did.
Speaker 5 (33:13):
What do you got how our guy is the best
doctor fan out there. He's got the best instagram of
any fan.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
I know.
Speaker 5 (33:20):
He makes up his own play by play calls, He's
got a lot of swag. You always see him, you
can't miss him. So go ahead, justin that's a proper
introduction for the hood. Vin Scully, I love that day.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
That was beautiful and I love listening to you and
Jose You guys are so knowledgeable. But let's not let's
move on to tonight.
Speaker 2 (33:39):
It was beautiful to.
Speaker 4 (33:40):
See Gavin Lux come back and everyone welcoming him. It
was so like emotional, you know, because Gavin Lux last year,
the second half of the season was a big part
of our team. And uh, that was great to see
even on a Mookie Series ring night. Let's make it
Gavin Lux World Series Ring night too. And okay, I
thought that was amazing. Also, Mookie Betts, just like you said,
(34:04):
playing shortstop, it's such a great level. People always saying
move him back to right field. I think he's doing
amazing and short and he could say right where he is.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
In my opinion, well he's not going anywhere right now.
The way he's playing and the way he's hitting, there's
not going to be a Mookie Bets to right field
move that I can envision this season. Hey, we'll see
you at the game tomorrow night, Han, Justin.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
I'll be there Wednesday. Shan looked amazing. Also real quick, Dave,
I have a question if the playoffs were tomorrow and
everyone was back and healthy, loo's your six through nine.
Speaker 2 (34:37):
In the lineup?
Speaker 5 (34:39):
Six through nine? Well, it's Monthsy. I mean, I have
to think about this. It's Monthsy, It's Tommy Edmond, It's
Andy pie has. Those guys are in no particular order.
Those are three guys that you would have at the
bottom thirty of your lineup. You would have Pie, you
would have Monthsy. Pie has, Tommy Edmund and Miguel Rojas.
(35:04):
Those would be my sixth through nine.
Speaker 6 (35:07):
I like it.
Speaker 4 (35:07):
And last thing I want to end on is shout
out to Pie Haz Honestly, what an amazing season. It's
just like unbelievable and he could be in any team's
four and five hole right now, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (35:21):
No doubt. Justin, thank you for the phone call. Man,
threw me a curveball right there. You know it would
be you know, depending on the matchups, it would be
either Kei k A, Miguel Rojas, or even possibly Hey
Sun Kim. I mean he's he's a factor, he'll be
coming back soon, and he's an elite defender at second base.
That'll do it for us. Tonight on Dodgery Talk, before
(35:43):
we say good night, I want to say congratulations to
my guy Snell. Zilla. Blake Snell, welcomed in his second
child into the world today. Congrats to him and his wife, Hayley.
Blake Snell, who's been on paternity list after pitching seven
innings in San Diego, will be back on Friday night
and make the start for the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks.
(36:05):
So congratulations to snail Zilla and the entire snail Zilla family. Tomorrow,
Clayton Kershaw will be on the mound on regular rest.
He's eight and two with an ERA at three thirteen,
going up against right hander Nick Martinez. Yeah, you know
that name. He used to be a padre. He's ten
and nine with an ERA of four p fifty nine
(36:25):
Marongo Casino. Dodgers on Deck begins at six o'clock tomorrow,
with first pitch at seven ten with Rick Monday and
Tim Neverett. Thanks to Dwayne McDonald out here at Dodgers Stadium,
thanks to Colin Yee back at our Burbank Studios, and
thanks to you for listening. In case you missed any
of the show, you can find it on the iHeartRadio app.
(36:46):
That's also where you can hear a fun and informative
conversation with Kirby Yates, who pitched his first game since
coming off the IL yesterday. Had a good time with
Kirby Yates, and Tanner Scott made a cameo, So take
a listen. There might be some things that you wouldn't
expect in that interview on the iHeartRadio app. Once again,
(37:08):
the final score tonight from Dodgers Stadium. The Dodgers shut
out the Red seven to nothing. Have a great rest
of your night. Ben Maller on Fox Sports Radio is
next Seal shut playing
