Speaker 2 (00:29):
Here's your host of Dodger Talk. It's only been fourteen years.
Every day, David Basse.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Welcome the Dodger Talk David Vase live at Dodgers Stadium.
After the Dodgers sweep the Reds in the Wildcard Series tonight,
the final score eight to four. We're with you until
eleven o'clock tonight, live from Dodgers Stadium. We have phone
lines open at eight six six, nine, eight seven, two

(00:57):
five seventy. Jose Moto will in in thirty minutes and
we will hear from Mookie Betts and Dave Roberts. And
tonight again, the Dodgers starting pitcher led them to victory.
Yamamoto was incredible tonight, over one hundred pitches thrown. If
not for Taoscar Hernandez dropping a routine fly ball in

(01:21):
the first inning, it would have been seven shutout innings
for Yamamoto. Instead, the pitch count got a little bit
high in that seventh inning, Dave Roberts had to go
to the bullpen, and yes, it wasn't spotless. Amids Shean
coming out of the bullpen for the first time this postseason,
a little rusty and certainly not being in this type

(01:47):
of situation before, certainly played into it. I'm sure, but
he'll bounce back. He'll be a big part of this
bullpen moving forward. But really the story of the night
is the emergent of Roki Sasaki in this type of setting,
and I was sold. I'm not a guy that goes
all in after one appearance or two appearances, but I

(02:10):
was all in on Roki after watching what he did
in Seattle, where it was playoff like atmosphere in the
seventh inning there on Saturday night, and he was facing
the two or two of the better hitters the Mariners had,
including Cal Rawley, with the Seattle t Mobile Park on

(02:31):
their feet. Forty five thousand plus channing MVP MVP for
Raleigh and Roki proceeded to strike out Cal Rawley on
three fork balls. I was sold after that because that
was playoff like environment. And again I'm going to continue
to give Andrew Friedman credit because he believed in Roki

(02:54):
more than anybody else. He believed if the Dodgers could
get Roki and his McCann in line the way that
they believe they should be, Roki Sasaki could get back
to throwing one hundred miles an hour like he was
in Japan. They got his mechanics back online. And Andrew
reassured me two weeks ago that it was the velocity

(03:17):
and the confidence in his pitches that was going to
give him the mound presence and the confidence on the mound.
And we have seen that now in three different appearances,
and we have seen that on full display tonight in
a close out playoff game. And this was perfect to
get Sasaki into this type of game. The Dodgers needed

(03:40):
to get Roki in one of these first two games
just so he got his feet wet in playoff like
atmosphere before they go to one of the most hostile
environments in Major League Baseball, the bank in Philadelphia Citizens
Bank Park. It's going to be the Dodgers and Phillies
a retch of the two thousand and nine NLCS. Game

(04:03):
one of the NLDS is Saturday night in Philadelphia. Show
Hey Otani against Christopher Sanchez, and it'll be interesting to
see if the Phillies do what they did in September
and throw all of their lefties at the Dodgers, Sanchez, Luzardo,
and Ranger Suarez. That's what they did in September. For

(04:27):
the Dodgers, Otani will pitch Game one. Blake Snell will
be on regular rest for Game two because there is
a day off between games one and two of the NLDS.
So next Sunday or this coming Sunday, it's a day off,
which gives Blake Snell the opportunity to be on regular
rest after pitching last night Game one of the NLDS.

(04:50):
So the way I'm mapping this out games one and two,
it's Otani Snell. When the Dodgers and Phillies come back
to LA for Game three the NLDS, it's gotta be Yamamoto.
Yamamoto has got to be on the mound in Game
three because either the series is tied at one game apiece,
the Dodgers are up two to oh or they're down

(05:11):
oh two, and Game three is vital in a best
of five series, and then game four if there is
one tyler glass now on the mound at Dodgers Stadium.
So that's the way I see it line up. But
certainly the Dodger offense came to life, and they have
been alive for the last two and a half weeks.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
I said this last night, I'll see it again.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
We talk about wanting to play your best baseball at
this time of the year, it's hard to argue that
the Dodger offense is not hitting on all cylinders at
this time of the year. They close out the regular
season winning five in a row, after winning four in
a row, beating Robbie Ray Logan Webb two separate times,
and going to Seattle and sweeping the Mariners, and here

(05:55):
they are now with a seven game winning streak if
you count the five coming into the Wildcard series. So really,
great job, great job by Dave Roberts. I mean, that's tough.
You don't want to embarrass your pitcher by taking him
out in the middle of account. But that's where Dave
felt like he needed to do it. And he took
em it Shehan out of a one to two count

(06:17):
in the eighth inning of that game. So tremendous urgency
from Dave Roberts. Eight six six seven two five seventy
is the phone number. I am dried out with a
change of clothes, ready to go until eleven o'clock tonight.
Let's go out to Edward who is at Dodgers Stadium tonight? Hi, Edward,

(06:37):
you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 9 (06:40):
Yeah, I was a good DZ. It was such an
amazing game. Regardless who was the point, it was.

Speaker 10 (06:45):
The Dodgers were firing on all cylinders.

Speaker 11 (06:48):
I loved it.

Speaker 9 (06:48):
If you have a model was on it.

Speaker 10 (06:51):
Dave Roberts pushed on a motive to the limits and Rokie.
I was out here at the game tonight and Roki
was electric. I had never seen the fans just on
it with Roki and this guy was throwing heaters one
hundred miles per hour basketballs and it was amazing.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
It was I think we're all sold now, Edward? Are
you sold on Roki being the closer?

Speaker 6 (07:19):
Oh?

Speaker 10 (07:19):
Yeah, whoever it is, whoever has the best confidence and
confidence pushing off there.

Speaker 9 (07:26):
But DV is it too late for me to talk
about where I was on Game one for the World
Series last year.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Never too late, Okay, so real quick.

Speaker 9 (07:37):
I was out here with my dad. I was sitting
out there in the Civilian for Game one.

Speaker 10 (07:42):
My dad went to the bathroom. He didn't come back,
and then Freddie Kreman hit I walk up home run.
I was hugging everyone in the stands, but my dad.

Speaker 9 (07:52):
I'm like, where is my dad? I called him. He
was there's out there in the beer garden. It's like, oh,
I thought they were. They weren't gonna win it.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yeah, that's a pretty good story. Your dad should not
have gone to the bathroom. Thank you for the phone call, Edward.
I mean, there are so many wild stories of where
people were when Freddie Freeman hit his walk off home
run in last year's World Series. Who is going to
be the hero this year? We'll have to wait and see.
But this is going to be the toughest challenge for
the Dodgers. I believe in the National League Playoffs, if

(08:26):
they can get through Philadelphia, I'm very confident they could
get through any one of the other three teams, whether
it's the Cubs, the Padres, or the Brewers. Shane was
at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Shane, you're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 12 (08:41):
Once up DV. So my son and I went to
the game tonight and it was amazing. It was so
much fun. My thoughts are Rokie is for sure the
lockdown closer. I am a big fan and a believer
that we need to be piggybacking our starters and not
relying on a both end. What are your thoughts?

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Well, they did that tonight with Emit Shean and it
didn't work out as they had planned. That happens sometimes,
But Shane, are are we going to just ignore that
Blake trining again for a fourth straight appearance? Look like
Blake trining again?

Speaker 12 (09:15):
No, I'm I'm all for trining for Bessie. Other than that,
I don't. I'm a little cautious about our bullpend, So
I agree. I think we need to go back to Shean.
I think you just had a rough night.

Speaker 11 (09:27):
But I'm I'm a.

Speaker 12 (09:28):
Big believer in piggybacking our starters, So.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
It's out the I'm in with that, Shane. And that's
how the nineteen Nationals did it with Patrick Corbin a
few different times.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
So I'm all in with that.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Thank you for the phone call. Eight six six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. Let's
head downstairs right now to the podium. That's where Dave
Roberts is addressing the media. After the Dodgers advanced to
the NLDS.

Speaker 13 (09:55):
You know, guys stayed positive, stayed within in themselves, kept
taking good at bats, and you know, Yoshi stepped up,
you know, once again, and Addison pitches that first inning,
but you know he was locked in and for him
to get us into the seventh was huge, and us
tack on offensively, defensively, we're playing great and you know
it's good to see Rookie finish that game too.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Is Rokie your closer now?

Speaker 6 (10:19):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (10:20):
I trust him and he's gonna be pitching and leverage.
So that was a you know, the more you pitch
guys and play guys, you learn more. So, like I
said about Yamamoto, I don't think the moment's going to
be too big for Rookie.

Speaker 14 (10:32):
Got a burrier from Doc.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Hey, Doc, congrats.

Speaker 13 (10:36):
What I mean every year is different.

Speaker 10 (10:39):
But how far do you think this team can go?

Speaker 13 (10:43):
And would you like to get back to the World
Series and play the Yankees again, I think we can
we can win it all. I think we're equipped to
do that. We certainly have the pedigree, we certainly have
the hunger. We're playing great baseball, and in all honesty,
I don't care who we play. I just want to,
you know, be the last team standing.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
The questions for Doc, just what have you seen out
of the offense the last couple of nights to kind
of keep put piling on runs, finding different ways to
score like they did kind of, and then the later
innings today, I.

Speaker 13 (11:12):
Think that what we're seeing is, you know, winning pitches,
using the whole field, fighting and you know, not trying
to just slug. I think we're taking team at bats,
situation situationally we've been fantastic and even roared at the bottom.
You know, whether it's a sacrifice, the fight to slap

(11:35):
an O two double to the other way to get
on base, you know, we're just doing things. Whether it's
a sacrifly, we're doing whatever it takes, even show hey
in the situation getting a guy over to allow set
the stage for Mookie. So just team baseball, team at bats, and.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
Then in that eighth inning, just kind of what were
you seeing out of Emmett, what prompted you to kind
of make the move there, and kind of how do
you view him going forward after this?

Speaker 13 (12:00):
You know, I just yeah, I mean, I still I
trust him. It was his first kind of real cracket
kind of late leverage. He wasn't sharp, But I believe
in him, I really do. And I think for me
is you know, to think that he can get through
Benson although he had count leverage, to then feel like

(12:20):
he can get through mcclaim. He would have been over
thirty pitches, and I just didn't think the stuff was
a sharp And so for me, I just kind of
had a gut feeling that, you know, give Vessie a
chance to get count leverage versus Anduhar or if they
leave Benson in And I liked him against McClain and
then freedol, So that's kind of my thought. And you know,
but em it did a fine job. It's just kind

(12:41):
of just it just wasn't sharp tonight.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
Towards the back of the fourth row.

Speaker 15 (12:45):
Dave Moogie's turn around this year has just been kind
of insane. Can you just kind of talk about what
kind of player he is to have that start and
then now come through like he always has and be
one of the best players in the world.

Speaker 13 (12:58):
I think it started when he just kind of just
gave up on chasing, you know, having a career year,
you know, chasing an MVP or whatever it was. I
think he just kind of was resolved to just let
that go, play for the present and the future and
play to help the team win. And I think that
just took a little bit a lot of pressure off him,
and then everything kind of unveiled and he got to

(13:22):
be the player that he was and freed himself up.
And so, yeah, he's playing fantastic baseball.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
All right.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
There's Dave Roberts at the podium after the Dodgers beat
the Reds eight to four sweep the Wildcard Series in
advance to the NLDS to take on the Phillies. Game
one between the Dodgers and Phillies Saturday night in the
City of Brotherly Love. It'll be Otani against Christopher Sanchez.
This is a battle of Titans. These are two of,

(13:50):
if not the two best teams in Major League Baseball
going at it in a best of five NLDS eight six, six, two,
five seventy is the phone number. Let's go out to
Westwood sasan. You're on Dodger Talk.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
How you doing.

Speaker 16 (14:07):
I'm doing great, David. Thank you so much for taking
my call. I just wanted to give a shout out
to Dave Roberts for his master call management today. You know,
I've never seen that someone pulling a pitcher in the
middle of it at that and then you know, in
Vesie getting to strike out on one pitch one an
amazing move by Dave Roberts today. And then I also
wanted to give respect to Yoshinobo Yamamoto for you know,

(14:30):
the gem that he pitched today. You know what an
amazing performance. You know, great game by the Dodgers. You know,
they got two wins downe they got eleven to go.
Thank you so much, Dave for taking my call.

Speaker 6 (14:39):
Appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Hey, thank you for the phone calling. Yes, Yamamoto deserves
so many accolades. I felt like he was one of
the most overlooked pitchers in Major League Baseball this season.
So much talk about Paul Skein, so much talk about
Christopher Sanchez. I guess the East Coast never caught what
Yamamoto was doing, because hey, he is right there with Sanchez.

(15:03):
And Skins in every pitching category. And Yama Moto in
his last six starts including tonight, forty one innings pitched,
fifty three strikeouts and an ELRA of zero sixty six.
You want to talk about a heater and a pitcher
pitching hot at the right time. That's Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Let's

(15:26):
go out to Woodland Hills.

Speaker 7 (15:27):
A Mer.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
You're on Dodger Talk live from Dodger Stadium. Hi a mere,
Hi David Jin.

Speaker 9 (15:33):
Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 6 (15:35):
I just had two questions for you. For you specifically, Dave,
how do you compare the Dodgers and Phillies won through
nine hitting lineups during the regular season then going into
the playoffs? And the second question, what are some of
your personal memories of two thousand and eight two thousand
and nine when we unfortunately lost to them back to
back years. Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Yeah, well, number one, I remember two thousand In two
thousand and nine, eight was the first year that those
group of Dodgers Eh Year Camp, Billingslee Loney, those guys
getting to the postseason. Remember they upset the Cubs in
the NLDS. The one hundred win Cubs James Loney hit

(16:19):
a huge Grand Slam in Game one at Wrigley Field,
and the Dodgers shocked everybody by knocking the Cubs out
that year in eight, and then you know, it felt
like they were a little short on the starting pitching
in two thousand and eight. In two thousand and nine,
people that I've talked to on that team believe that
they were better equipped to beat the Phillies, but unfortunately,

(16:42):
Jonathan Broxton gave up a big game winner to Jimmy
Rollins after Matt Stairs won the series in two thousand
and eight. So that's what sticks out to me about
those And already, Phillies Nation has tweeted at me that
the Phillies have won each of the last three playoffs
series against the Dodgers going back to nineteen eighty three.

(17:04):
But trust me, Philly hasn't seen a Dodger team.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Loaded like this.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Eight six, six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy is
the phone number. And as far as the Phillies lineup goes, look,
Trey Turner had a hamstring strain. He came back the
last week of the season. We're gonna see what version
of Trey Turner the Phillies get I mean a big
part of his game is his legs. Obviously, if he's

(17:31):
hampered by that hamstring and can't put it into the
next gear, uh, that's gonna be a huge advantage for
the Dodgers. And obviously you got the two best home
run hitters in the National League and Schwarber and Otani.
Schwarber can do what o'tani did last night and put
you up one nothing right away. So the danger is

(17:54):
the first five for the Phillies. I would say the
Dodgers are a deeper lineup one through nine, eight six
six nine, eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers beat the Reds eight to four and advance to
the NLDS on Saturday night, We're gonna take a time
out here on Dodger Talk. When we come back, you'll

(18:15):
hear from Mookie Bets. We have one line open. We'll
take more phone calls and we'll check in with Jose
Mota as we take it to the top of the hour.
After the Dodgers sweep the Reds two games to nothing
in the Wildcard round eight to four, the final score
tonight on AM five to seventy LA Sports.

Speaker 7 (18:39):
Dodger Talk is available on AM five seventy LA sports
dot com hand on the iHeartRadio app. Back to more
Dodger Talk with Dodger insider David Basse.

Speaker 4 (18:51):
Counts still full.

Speaker 5 (18:52):
The next pitch from Stion will be the ninth to
Bookie Wine fair ball down the left build line. Mookie
Betts Rojas Gonna Trodden in score all Tony held up
at third. Mookie Bets four for five with three.

Speaker 8 (19:09):
Doubles, third time in Mookie Betts playoff career that he
had a four hit night. Mookie Bets came alive in September,
and he has continued to swing a hot bat for
the Dodgers as he and the rest of the Dodgers
are headed to Philadelphia for Game one of the NLDS

(19:31):
beginning on Saturday night. After they beat the Reds tonight
eight to four and sweep this wildcard series. Daniels Jewelers
presents the home run Forecast. Go to AM five seventy

Speaker 3 (19:44):
Use the keyword home run for your chance to win
a fifty dollars Daniels Jewelers gift card predicting the number
of home runs in the next game. Daniels Jewelers own
the Dream. Eight six six nine eight seven two five
seventy is the phone number. Let's head back down downstairs
to the podium to hear from a rejuvenated Mookie Bets.

Speaker 13 (20:05):
Mookie, you've been around a while, great Red Sox teams,
great Diager teams.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
Where do you rate this one and how far do
you think you can go?

Speaker 14 (20:14):
I mean, it's hard to kind of rank them, but
obviously I know we can. We can win the whole thing.
We just have to play good baseball. We have to
continue to pitch timely hitting and play defense and everything
should be okay.

Speaker 13 (20:31):
Is it fair to compare last year's team but this
year too?

Speaker 14 (20:35):
I mean not really, just because just two different teams.
You know, last year we didn't have as much starting pitching.
This year we have, you know, pretty deep and starting pitching,
and you know the I mean just different players. You know,
we brought back, brought back a lot of guys with
the vibe. Everything is just different. It's a different year,
and so it was just enjoy we are stay right there.

Speaker 17 (21:00):
Congratulations. I wanted to ask you guys just went through
a lot of adversity. Obviously regular season and even in
this series. How much is that a testament just to
you guys's mental fortitude and then be able to what
things are going to be able to help you guys
in the next series against the Phillies.

Speaker 14 (21:14):
Yeah, we have went through a lot. You know, we
had a lot of struggles really all year, but I
think we all view that as just tests to see
how we would, you know, respond, And so now now
we're starting to use those tests that we went through
earlier to respond now and be ready now. And anything

(21:36):
that kind of comes our way, it can't be worse
than what we've already went through. So just keeping positive
mindset and just keep going your lift.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Jack does tonight kind of become an example of that,
just with the way the first settings started and having
a deficit to overcome and being able to chip away
and build a lead there over the middle innings.

Speaker 14 (21:56):
Yeah, absolutely, you know, getting going down quick there, especially
the way it was with an error like that, can
really deflate you. But you know, we've, like I said,
been through so much that we know it's just a
matter of time. We've just got to play, just got
to play one inning at a time, one pitch at
a time, and That's what I love about this this

(22:17):
this team.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
With with how difficult parts of the season were fore
you offensively, like, are you enjoying just the success and
the results that you're getting here or is it kind
of what you were searching for this year?

Speaker 11 (22:27):
Just what?

Speaker 4 (22:28):
What is this last couple of weeks and especially this
week with how you performed.

Speaker 14 (22:31):
Like, it's been cool. You know, it's been cool.

Speaker 18 (22:33):
It is what it is.

Speaker 14 (22:34):
I'm just happy I can help the boys win, it
can contribute. It's better late than never. But you know,
it was just one of those things where you just
got to keep going.

Speaker 10 (22:45):
Man.

Speaker 14 (22:46):
You know, I went through this arguably one of the
worst years of my career, but I think it really
made me mentally tough.

Speaker 7 (22:52):
And so now.

Speaker 14 (22:54):
There's just there's just a different level of focus and
it's not really on myself. It's more on winning the game.

Speaker 3 (23:01):
There's Mookie Bets who had four hits tonight and three RBIs,
and look, Mookie Bets. I remember being in Tampa where
basically his season had hit rock bottom, and that's where
he said, basically, I give up. I'm not going to
try to recapture the last three or four months. In
one game, one series. I'm gonna play for today and

(23:24):
try to help the team win today and not try
to get twenty hits in one game. And let's not
forget about his old buddy and former Dodger, former Red
Sox JD. Martinez taking the time to meet up with
Mooki when the team was in Florida to get him
right mechanically and maybe even mentally, because ever since then
he's been a different guy. So shout out to America's

(23:47):
DH JD. Martinez. And how about keyk Hernandez October keyk
Let's not take that for granted. Tonight and yesterday got
the starting left field. He had four hits in the
two games against the Reds. Tonight, his was a huge
hit in the fourth inning to tie the game and
RBI double to tie the game. And then Miguel Rojas

(24:09):
came up big dumped a fly ball into right field
to give the Dodgers the lead, and Ben Rortfitt, he
did the little things to help the Dodgers win. In
the ninth spot Tonight, he had two hits, he had
two runs scored, He squared away to bunt, He forced
the Reds to make a play they could not so
if you look at the seven eight nine hitters for

(24:31):
the Dodgers tonight and Keith a Hernandez, Miguel Rojas and
Ben Rourtfitt, they combined to have six hits in the
game tonight, they combined to score five runs and drive
in two RBIs we forget that's what made the Dodgers
offense so dangerous last year when they had their seven

(24:53):
eight nine hitters, not only getting on base, but scoring
and driving in runs and then turning the line up
over having men on base for show. Heyotani, Mookie Betts
and Freddie Freeman. I remember last year opposing teams to
me before each and every series. Our goal is for
Otani to come to the plate with nobody on base.

(25:16):
If there's guys on base, that's a real problem. And
we saw that again tonight and a number of different innings.
Eight six, six, nine, seven, two five seventy is the
phone number. Let's go out to Emma in Long Beach.
You're on Dodger Talk with David vasse Hi. Emma, Hi, David.

Speaker 18 (25:36):
I want to let you know, sir, that you don't
go to the locker room on a John A win
with Champagne without goggle.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
Sir, hmm, well I did.

Speaker 7 (25:48):
Me.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
Yes, it burned a couple of different times. But I'm
a big believer in eye contact. And when you have
goggles on, they can't see your eyes. The fans at
home can't see your eyes. So me and Kershaw we're
in that boat where you just want to make eye
contact with everybody.

Speaker 18 (26:07):
Yeah, you did a fabulous job, real quick, David. I
just wanted to let you know I am so proud
of Rosaki rock. He just did all you just made.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
You just made him Mexican the way you pronounced his name,
which is fine, but I just want to point out
it's Rokey Roki Sasaki.

Speaker 18 (26:29):
There we go awesome, and you know he is.

Speaker 3 (26:31):
He's welcome to the Carne Sada anytime. I'm sure, Emma,
but yeah, Roki Sasaki.

Speaker 18 (26:38):
And he's so humble. And you know also what you
were saying about ya Yamamoto. He has been robbed so
many times that that man comes back true blue, fleeting blue,
and gubs out there and shows him what shows all
of us what he's got. He's a tremendous picture, no doubt,

(26:59):
and he.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
Showed that in October last year. Nobody even remembered that
he missed a couple of months. All they remember is
what he did in October, and then he comes back
this year with thirty starts, never really missed a start.
The Dodgers gave him extra rest and it benefited him.
And really, if you go back to spring training, the

(27:19):
Dodgers were setting themselves up to have their starting rotation
not only to be healthy, but to be pitching at
their best. And right now everything they planned back in
March in February is starting to come to fruition. In
that respect, the offense has come to life. They're playing
for each other and they're not giving up at bats.

(27:43):
They have a lot of focus. Some guys more than
others turned the switch on, which has been big. And
I'm so happy for Taoscar Hernandez because nobody felt worse
about dropping that fly ball in the first inning than
Taoscar himself. When he redeemed himself, he drove in two
with a double, and he was big last night with

(28:05):
two home runs, and Taoscar Hernandez in these two games
drove in six runs to help the Dodgers advance to
the NLDS, and they're going to need Taoscar Hernandez to
be big in Philadelphia and in the NLDS, especially against
those lefty starters of Sanchez, Luzardo and Ranger Suarez. Let's

(28:26):
go out to Manny, who won some tickets to come
to the game tonight. Well the Dodgers that rewarded you, Manny.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
Yes you did.

Speaker 19 (28:35):
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. It had a
great Tuesday and even better Wednesday.

Speaker 4 (28:39):
Man we close it out.

Speaker 6 (28:40):
It was great.

Speaker 19 (28:41):
I know yesterday you said I wasn't that positive, you know,
talking about the hitting. But today I don't want to
overlook Amma molto. Man Yoshi killed it one hundred and
thirteen pitches. But more importantly, he had a first pitch
strike on like twenty of the twenty nine hitters he faced.

Speaker 6 (28:55):
That's unreal.

Speaker 19 (28:56):
He take this to a big league doesn't matter what
we did after that, he set us up. We brought
it home for him.

Speaker 6 (29:02):
It was great, man, I had a great night.

Speaker 19 (29:04):
Thank you very much to you, David. I appreciate you
giving me the tickets, Thank you for calling, Thank you
everybody behind the scenes, everybody.

Speaker 6 (29:11):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (29:12):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 6 (29:13):
Love the show.

Speaker 3 (29:14):
Thank you, Manny, glad you made it out here and
glad you could watch and witness the Dodgers advanced to
the NLDS behind another great offensive performance. Mookie Betts tonight
leads the way. October Keike Hernandez showed up in a
big way, and ti Oscar Hernandez certainly powered the Dodgers
last night and redeemed himself tonight as well after making

(29:37):
a costly error. And how about Roki Sasaki. I think
we're all sold that this guy can get the last
three outs of a game. All right, we'll get back
to the phone calls in a moment, but first.

Speaker 7 (29:48):
It's tough to go around the horn with Jose Mota.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
All right, Jose Mota, the Dodgers are headed to Philadelphia.
Let's start with Roki Sasaki. I think we're all sold
that this guy can pitch under pressure.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
Now after Dave, and start plentying your bullpens and working
from the bottom side up, because you've got to pencil
him in in the most important situations. Now, we've had
a chance today to touch some scouts and touch some players,
and what they saw from him says he come back.

Speaker 12 (30:25):
He came back.

Speaker 1 (30:26):
It's just a different guy. Look at his face, Look
at the expressions, look at the confidence, look at the
conviction of the pitches, and obviously look at the triple digit.
So I am glad number one that he's throwing strikes.
Number two is that he's not afraid to go out
there and challenge people. And then number three is his splitter.
Fourth ball is the best we've seen since he got
here from Japan, because obviously he's not a guy that

(30:48):
has a lot of spin right on that pitch, but
he's thrown it now with a better follow through. So
thankfully the Valuers had the resources that he talked about
a couple of weeks ago to straight him out, understand
mechanics and also being open minded about the things they
need to do. So he's on his way to really
have some big, big outs, some biginnings for this ball club.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
How big is it for the Dodgers to get him
into a game here at Dodgers Stadium in this type
of setting before he experiences the city of brotherly love.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
He needed that, you know, Dodger Stammer had not been
very friendly with him as a starter. That's all in
the past, and I'm glad that people like Shohil Tani
Yamamota and the rest of the staff are just guiding
him along to know that the worst has gone. You know,
it's passed. Whatever is happening right now is something that
he's got to go out there and build off of.
But they have no doubt about the way teams scouted

(31:40):
this guy and what they wanted to what they wanted
him is what we're seeing right now because the potential
as a young pitcher is so high. But certainly for
the Dodgers, the flexibility of not pushing him into one spot,
being open minded and challenging him has made him better.
So pitching his Dodger Stadium tonight to me for him
was big because the memories here had not been all

(32:01):
that great.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
And for the Dodgers, they've been searching for a guy
that doesn't give them too much drama in the ninth inning.
So Jose, I'll ask you this. I seem to ask
four or five different people before every game. Ninth inning
saves situation. Who's getting the last three outs? If that's
the case in Game one in Philadelphia, who is getting

(32:26):
the last three outs?

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Gotta give it to Rookie right now. He's got the
swing of miss, he's got the ability to go out
on the triple digits, change speech on you, and be
as tough against Lesti's and against Rdy. So the way
things end right now, the way things stand today, there's
nobody standing up better than Roki Sasaki, even with a
short spurt. I'm going to just go to go back
to two thousand and two in the Angins in Francisco Rodriguez.

(32:50):
How do they find Frankie pitching four or five games
in September out of double A, and all of a
sudden he is in the middle of everything, passing the
baton for Percival and if anybody without frank the win.
I see the same thing happening right now in even
more important situations, because this guy's stuff is even better.

Speaker 2 (33:06):
That's a great comparison.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
Jose Mota is joining us after the Dodgers advance to
the NLDS sweeping the Reds in the Wildcard Series. How
excited are you, Jose, not only for this matchup of
two of the Titans in Major League Baseball, but to
see Otani pitch in his first postseason game in Major
League Baseball.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
It could not have come in a better spot for show. Hey,
the challenge of facing very tough hitters and that ballpark,
the fact that he amped it up a little bit
more against College Schwarba when he faced the Phillies here.
And the other thing too is the Dodgers lost those
games against the Phillies. They lost that series, but if
you look at every single one of those games, there's
a chance in a window there they couldn't capitalize, and

(33:51):
they actually came that close without the offense clicking the
way it is now. But we know that in Philadelphia
is so friendly for the hitters. It's going to be
friendly for both sides. But I like the way I
see things now right now, especially with Shohey on the
way he sit on the baseball and varying his patterns
like you have a moltada today, and being able to
just read some swings, read some hitters, and really live

(34:11):
up to the momentum and live up to the environment,
which is going to be fantastic for him.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
After Otani's last two starts, Jose Dave Roberts kind of
pulled back the curtain a little bit where they have
a pregame meeting with Otani Andrew Friedman.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
There's a few people.

Speaker 3 (34:26):
Involved and deciding how long O'tani will pitch in a game.
Last time, they all agreed six innings. If it's going
easy and smooth, that's all good. If you see Otani
after five shutout innings in Philly, is there any doubts
he would go back out there for a sixth?

Speaker 1 (34:45):
Listen, this is not the regular season anymore. And if
he's out there being your best reliever at that point,
meaning he's the best guy to have to pick himself up,
you have to go out there and leave him because
show he wants this. Believe me, that all beyond the
medical staff and all beyond medical recommendations, he understands. But
certainty he understands more about what he means to the

(35:07):
ball club. He's pitching, Well, there's no need to pull
him out with sixty five pitches after five innutes because
you just never known the top top of the environment,
what the lineup's going to do against a bullpen. Well,
the bullpen's going to do against that lineup. And for sure,
if he's riding along, you just go out there and
leave Malone because Shoe is not going to say no.
Believe me, he's not going to say no.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
Jose, when the Phillies were here at Dodger Stadium in September,
the Dodgers faced three of their starting pitchers that were
left handed. Christopher Sanchez is starting Game one. We saw
Lozardo and Suarez at Dodger Stadium. Would you expect the
Phillies to throw those three lefties in the first three
games of the series.

Speaker 13 (35:48):
I would.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
You know, they're without their best pitcher in Zach Whers,
so he's out. So there's a reason why they let
things up here with Lozardo and those guys in Santez
and Suarez. When they were here and the Dodgers actually
got to those guys, you know, it's not a game
in which you expected them to blow off people and
score eight runs. But they did enough and had enough
team at bats, score just enough runts to win pitching

(36:11):
then you know, back that up. But I feel very
comfortable on the approach had against every single one of
those guys. So I expect that again, and certainly knowing
that not least on one time, you know, make sure
that you take advantage of whatever windows they gave you.
Those guys were going to give you strikes number one,
They're gonna give you opportunities to score. But it might
be a very small window. Take advantagage of it and

(36:31):
then use the team at bats that you had this series,
the short series against Cincinnati, to capitalize and keep going
forward with this momentum.

Speaker 3 (36:40):
All right, Jose, see on the plane tomorrow on the
way to Philadelphia and game one of an epic showdown
Game one of the NLDS Saturday Night Dodgers Phillies.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
We will be there. Look forward to it.

Speaker 1 (36:52):
Jose, same here, all the best.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
There he goes, Jose.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
Mota, part of the Dodgers Spanish radio broadcast with Luis
Cheeto Cruz. Great to see these guys calling these postseason
games and it is going to be electric in Philadelphia.
The scene there is going to be something that a
lot of these Dodger players have not experienced before they
experienced the World Series at Yankee Stadium. This is going

(37:19):
to be very similar in the NLDS tonight. From what
we understand from MLB dot COM's Todd Zoleki, the Phillies
had thirty one thousand fans at their scrimmage tonight, a scrimmage.
Alan Iverson would have laughed at that practice. Thirty one
thousand fans for practice, Yeah, thirty one thousand fans for

(37:44):
a practice game tonight in Philadelphia. It's going to be
one of those scenes, one of those John Suhu photos
that will last forever when Otani takes them mound in
the first inning for the first time ever in his
major league career pitching in the postseason. Let's take a
couple of more phone calls. The Dodgers beat the Reds

(38:05):
tonight eight to four. Let's go out to Bob and Malibu.
You're on Dodger Talk live from Dodgers Stadium.

Speaker 1 (38:12):
Hi, Bob, Uncle Dave.

Speaker 11 (38:14):
Thanks for having me on as always. Man, congrats to
you and the boys out there tonight. Great win. Want
to give credits that were credits due Yamamoto and Sasaki,
of course, but we can't leave our man, Mookie Betts
out of that.

Speaker 16 (38:25):
Man.

Speaker 11 (38:25):
He has been a dominant force and he keeps driving
that ball for us and he's playing great defense. So
all props to Mookie.

Speaker 10 (38:32):
Man.

Speaker 11 (38:33):
Want to shout him out.

Speaker 7 (38:35):
There.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
You go, you did?

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (38:37):
It is that all you want to shout out?

Speaker 1 (38:38):
MOOKI no sir, no sir.

Speaker 15 (38:41):
A question for you day, Okay.

Speaker 11 (38:43):
First of all, like you keep talking about left handers
coming out as should they start those three?

Speaker 12 (38:48):
Will there be any changes.

Speaker 11 (38:49):
To the roster in Philadelphia from what we've seen here, Well,
I don't see how Michael Confordo is on this roster.

Speaker 3 (38:58):
Unless the Dodgers feel that Justin Dean and Hassan Kim
are redundant in a five game series much different than
a best of three, that'll be a decision they have
to make. I actually like the ad bats Confordo was
taking the couple of games or last couple of weeks.

(39:18):
And are the Dodgers going to carry three catchers? Because
if Will Smith is on the NLDS roster and for
some reason that right hand flares up and he can't
go the rest of the series and they have to
take him off the NLDS roster, that means he won't
be available to you during the NLCS. If a player

(39:42):
is removed from the roster because of injury, he is
not eligible for the very next series. Now he would
be for the World Series. So to me, that's the
biggest question. Do they add Confordo and do they carry
three catchers? That's the biggest question, And it's all contingent
on Will Smith's right hand.

Speaker 11 (40:04):
Understood, and obviously like you said with three left handers,
we're gonna want those right hand bats in the lineup.
And most importantly, Will Smith's last thing for you day
before I let you go, You know gm Ned Colletti
once said it to win a World Series, someone on
the team's got to turn into Barry Bond. Last year,
Freddie Freeman delivered for us. Who's it going to be

(40:25):
this year? Who do you think it has to be
this year for us?

Speaker 3 (40:27):
I mean, it's looking like Mookie Betts right, Bob, the
way he's playing. I mean I wouldn't I wouldn't count
out Mookie Betts. I wouldn't count out show Hey Otani,
and I wouldn't count out Freddie Freeman. That's what makes
the Dodgers so dangerous. They got four or five six
different guys that can carry you. Tommy Edmund was the
NLCS MVP last year amongst these group of players. That

(40:52):
just shows you how deep they are. Thanks for the
phone call, Bob, appreciate it. Eight six six nine eight
seven two five seventy. Here here's something else, another subplot
to a series that doesn't need another one. Walker Buehler,
last year's Game five hero is now a Philadelphia Philly,

(41:12):
and he pitched really well his last two appearances of
the regular season.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
How are the Phillies going to deploy Walker Bueller?

Speaker 3 (41:22):
Are they gonna hold him until he pitches here at
Dodger Stadium? What are they going to do with Walker Bueller?
And how are they going to deploy him the way
they did in his last two appearances of the regular season.
There was one where he piggiedback to start, pitched the
final five innings of a game. The Phillies already had

(41:42):
the division wrapped up by that point in time, and
he also made a traditional start. That's another part of
this series that you want to keep in the back
of your mind. Walker Bueller wants nothing more to prove
the Dodgers wrong in the Red Sox wrong for not
bringing him back in two different scenarios. So let's see,

(42:06):
let's see what Walker Buehler we get. Let's see when
Walker Buehler is pitching in this NLDS. It all starts
Saturday night, Game one of the NLDS right here on
Dodgers Radio and five seventy LA Sports Rick Monday, Steven
Nelson will be on the call first pitch for Game

(42:26):
one of the NLDS still to be decided, but it's
either going to be six o'clock Eastern time or six
point thirty Eastern time right around there. But stay tuned
to A five seventy LA Sports and we will let
you know when Game one of the NLDS will take place.

(42:48):
It's Saturday night in Philadelphia. Otani versus Christopher Sanchez. That'll
do it for us on Dodger Talk tonight. Thanks to
Colin Yee back at our Burbank studio. Do I have
to call you a stud That feels really weird to me?

Speaker 2 (43:04):
You're just calling ye.

Speaker 3 (43:06):
Thanks to Dwayne McDonald DM. You could DM DM anytime
just playing Nellie. You know you're a nickname guy. Thanks

the show or the interviews, you can find it on

Stay tuned. We'll see you Saturday

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
