Welcome to the playoffs, Dodger fans.
Speaker 4 (00:06):
Is playoff time.
Speaker 5 (00:06):
On your favorite show.
Speaker 6 (00:09):
Thirteen wins is all it takes on that half in
escape for you.
Speaker 7 (00:14):
Welcome to a playoff edition of Dodger Talk. Get in
on the action at eight six six.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Eats Breeze, sleeps Baseball. Now we go to your award
winning broadcasters of the world champion Dodgers.
Speaker 7 (00:29):
Here's your host of Dodger Talk.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
It's only been fourteen years. Every day, David Basse. We
are live at Dodgers Stadium. Welcome the Dodger Talk. After
the Dodgers defeat the Reds ten to five in Game
one of the best of three Wildcard series, we have
phone lines open at eight six six, nine, eight seven,
(00:52):
two five seventy. Jose Moto will check in in forty minutes.
We'll head back downstairs to get postgame reaction. But certainly
this was huge. I felt like whoever won this game
will had a very good chance of winning this series.
I actually believe that whoever won this game was going
to win this series because if the Dodgers lose this series.
(01:15):
With Blakesnell on the mound. There's a whole lot of
pressure on them to win the next two. At least
now they only have to win one of the next two,
and the Reds, you would have to imagine, got a
reminder of how good the Dodgers are and how octaned,
how high octane their offense is. I think that was
(01:38):
the biggest thing tonight. The Dodgers didn't leave any doubt
that they were the better team tonight. I know the
eighth inning didn't go as smooth as you would have
liked it too, or as Dave Roberts would have liked
it too. Me personally, in a blowout game ten to two,
I'm not burning Alex Vesia in that type of situation.
(02:00):
A lot of pitchers on this roster. There's only three games.
When else are you going to use Justin Robleski? For me,
I would have brought Robleski in to close out the
last six outs in a blowout game because we've seen
this before, right, not just from the Dodgers, but other
teams high leverage relievers, closers, when they come into blowout games,
(02:21):
even postseason games, it doesn't seem like they're on It
feels like they understand the score. They know they got
a lot of leeway and they're just not as locked in.
And I'm not saying that's what happened with Alex Vesia,
but you know, when you bring those type of guys in.
Dave Roberts had talked about Alex Vessia being as one
(02:42):
of his most trusted relievers. Why Burnham in a ten
to two game like this, I would have brought in
Robleski in that situation, but nonetheless, Vesia and Enriquez with
a ten to two lead, you gotta throw strikes, just
throw fastballs. Iut a team that can hurt you with
one swing. The way the Reds scored their runs tonight,
(03:06):
especially in that eighth inning, was from the walks. It's
not like they hit their way to their five runs.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
They walked.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
The Dodgers beat themselves in that respect. They allowed the
Reds to walk their way to five runs tonight, especially
those three runs in the eighth inning, where it took
fifty nine pitches from Vesia, Enriquez and Dreyer to get
three outs. So you know, outside of that inning, tonight
(03:34):
was an emphatic reminder to the Reds and to the
rest of Major League Baseball how good this lineup is
and how good this starting staff is. Blake Snell, what
are the critics going to say now, he didn't pitch
a complete game shutout. That's the only thing you could
say if you really want a nitpick. But that's ridiculous, right,
(03:56):
That's something that Matt money Smith or Dylan Hernandez would say.
What's the haters gonna say now about Blake snow his
first postseason game for the Dodgers, and he gave them
seven innings, was absolutely dominant. Dodger fans are starting to
see every fifth or sixth day how elite his pitches are.
(04:18):
He had his curveball working, he had his change up working,
he had his fastball. I would have liked to have
seen him start to work in the slider more the
second third time around, because the Reds were kind of
sitting on his change up. But he was outstanding tonight.
You know, he understands coming into this postseason that nobody
(04:40):
was talking about him starting this game tonight, But at
the end of the postseason, he'll be the last man standing.
Eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Let's go out to Jose and Bellflower
lead us off on Dodger Talk tonight.
Speaker 8 (04:57):
Jose, Yes, sir, first time color long time listener. I
always wanted to say that, but I just think that
it's ironic. So last year we had the Dodgers did
they had a two and a half pitchers, Walker Wheeler
being one of them, right, which is crazy if you
think about it. But this year is the other way around.
(05:18):
We have a bunch of pictures, all aces in my opinion,
horrible for sure, But then the bullpen seems shaky. Now,
if I was to say this is what is better,
I would have said this is better. It's better having
starting pitching than not a good bullpen. However, last year
they did win with no starting pitchers and a very
(05:40):
good at bullpen.
Speaker 9 (05:41):
So it's really it's up in the air.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
But Das, let's have a couple of guys some love, Jose, Jose,
let I know you just want to lump everybody into
that bullpen. And look, Vessia and Enriquez weren't great. Jack
Dryer in his first postseason appearance has the bases low.
He got the final two outs, so you got to
give Jack Dryer props. And how about Blake Trining He
(06:05):
left no doubt in that ninth inning. So that's three
straight really good appearances from Blake Trining.
Speaker 8 (06:13):
Yeah, that was good to see him. Just one thing
I will say, Roberts, Uh, this guy Enriquez, I will
to say, bring him in with the clean inning. He
seem a little nervous to meet today. I don't know
if that's if you saw that or what are your
talkts on giving Ricus.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Well, that's part of being a reliever. It's not always
going to work out that way. If you're in the
bullpen and there's runners on, they need you to put
out a fire, you gotta be ready for that. Thanks
for the phone call, Jose, appreciate it, but yeah, I
agree with you. Look like Enriquez was trying to pitch
away from contact. You got to pitch to contact when
you have that type of lead. How about the Dodger
(06:54):
offense tonight. There are so many questions about the offense.
At the beginning of Tember and really the last couple
of weeks, this offense has been starting to get hot,
in particular show Hao Tani, and he reminded everybody how
hot he is. He had two home runs tonight, including
a big one in my opinion, in the very first inning,
(07:16):
off a Hunter Green, a guy that was making his
first postseason start, Dodger Stadium was rocking. They had Green
on the ropes early. They left him off the hook
in the first inning, but then in the third ta
Oscar Hernandez and Tommy Edmond hit back to back home runs,
and all of a sudden, the Dodgers had a five
to nothing lead before the fourth inning. Let's head downstairs
(07:38):
right now to hear from show Heo Tani and Will
Ireton at the podium.
Speaker 9 (07:44):
So Hey, how did it feel to give the team
that early spark in front of the home.
Speaker 10 (07:48):
Crown home no home day sense it? It was a
really hard pitch to hit, But I felt like I
reacted pretty well and I'm glad that I was able
to score help the team score early.
Speaker 11 (08:08):
The questions will go to the third round.
Speaker 12 (08:09):
On the left, show you've seen a lot of Taoscar Hernandez.
How dangerous is this lineup when the Oscar is really
at his best.
Speaker 11 (08:21):
Kill punch down to skit them all? Montail committed, doesn't
do you know about it?
Speaker 13 (08:26):
Okay?
Speaker 11 (08:32):
Uh committed.
Speaker 14 (08:38):
Equals and big homer by Tail overall, looking at our lineup,
We've been able to move guys over, score early and
score with runners in scoring positions.
Speaker 11 (08:49):
So I think we had a pretty good flow to
the game today. A few more jack on your right, guys.
Speaker 6 (08:54):
You finished the regular season really well, pitching and hitting
his moving out of the rehab phase of your pitching,
and just kind of being back to like a full
starter in a full two way role like has that
helped both parts of your game, just giving you some
freedom to kind of be the kind of player you
want to be.
Speaker 11 (09:08):
Made happy? Do you she already? So they got you?
Kick canny?
Speaker 15 (09:17):
Listen the connect Hmmm, skiddo, this skeddles just.
Speaker 11 (09:40):
Felt, you know, pretty good overall. To be able to
end on a good note.
Speaker 10 (09:44):
And obviously we don't know what's going to happen tomorrow,
but today being able to obviously end the note, you know,
end on a good note again is a good sign.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
All right, there's show Hey o, Tani and Will Ireton
at the podium after a ten to five Dodgers win
over the Red in Game one of the Wildcard Series.
Eight six, six, nine eighty seven two five seventy is
the phone number?
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Oh did I forget?
Speaker 3 (10:08):
We have a pair of tickets to give away to
tomorrow night's game, which I believe will send the Dodgers
to the nls DS to face the Philadelphia Phillies beginning
on Saturday night in the city of brotherly Love. So
if you want to be here for the Dodgers celebration
after sending the Reds home tomorrow night, I have a
(10:30):
pair of tickets for you eight six, six, nine, eight seven,
two five seventy And look. I know it's the Wildcard
Series and the Dodgers and you have experienced the highest
of highs of World Series games, NLCS games, even a
showdown between the Dodgers and Phillies coming up in the NLDS.
But it would be great to have this place sold
(10:52):
out on a night the Dodgers have a chance to
advance in around of the postseason, and tickets are available
Bullet Dodgers dot com slash postseason for tomorrow night's game.
And look, the last four meetings against the Reds, the
Dodgers are four and oh and they have scored twenty
eight runs, including tonight. Let's go out to Sassan who
(11:15):
is at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Sissan, thanks for coming
out Hey, David.
Speaker 16 (11:20):
Thanks for taking my call. I appreciate it. You know,
I just got to say in that post game question
conference that show he had he was being honest. The
Dodgers smashed the Reds today, and you know that, you
know issues that the bullpen had. You know, if it
wasn't for that, they would have blown these guys out
by nine runs. So, you know, I think that's a
really good sign going forward to show that, you know,
(11:41):
this offense is for real and they're not messing around
against the Reds. For you was just about the bullpen,
and you know they did struggle today, and you know,
Vessio wasn't himself like we had seen him previously in
the season. And my question to you is, you know
I saw that Tyler Glastow was.
Speaker 17 (12:01):
On this roster for the wild Card Series.
Speaker 14 (12:04):
Is there a.
Speaker 16 (12:04):
Situation that you think that the Dodgers may.
Speaker 18 (12:07):
Go to him.
Speaker 19 (12:09):
In release?
Speaker 13 (12:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (12:12):
I do.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
I think tomorrow night, Tyler glass now is very much
in play, considering he did not pitch tonight and he
will not pitch likely until the Dodgers return home after
the first two games in Philadelphia. I believe he'll pitch
a Game three or Game four at Dodgers Stadium of
the NLDS.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
So I would say Glass now is.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Very much in play to maybe even close out the game,
maybe pitch the eighth and ninth innings tomorrow night.
Speaker 16 (12:44):
Great And I also one more follow up question. It
was dealing with Ki k Hernandez. I realized I was
in the stands, so I didn't see exactly what happened,
but I saw he got pulled kind of midway through
the game, and I was reading online that he had.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Maybe sustain some sort of injury.
Speaker 16 (12:59):
Is there any update on Jornandez's status.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Well, check into that for you, sassam.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
But I saw him come out on the victory line
and didn't seem like there was anything bothering him. Tommy
Edmond's been nursing the right ankles, so that's the reason
why in a blowout Dave Roberts took the opportunity to
get Miguel Rojas in there at second base and same thing.
Give Alex call some a taste of the postseason in
a game like this.
Speaker 16 (13:27):
All right, well, I appreciate it. Thank you so much, Dave.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
All Right, thank you for the phone call. I'm sorry
quick on the trigger. Were you gonna say something nice
about me. Hey, PJ Butter, one of the Dodgers in
stadium hosts. Appreciate the shout out you were begging for one,
and when you beg for it inside Dodger Stadium on
the PA system, I'll accept it. And Natalia Perez, great
job as well. Dave styles your third right now. After
(13:53):
those two guys, I mean, come on, they gave me
a lot of love today. Eight six, six, nine eighty seven,
two five seventy A phone number, let's go out to David.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
You're on Dodger Talk Live from Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 17 (14:04):
Hi David, Hey David, how's it going.
Speaker 18 (14:07):
I just have a couple of comments. I was at
the game today, sitting in Loade, and I'm just I
just feel so so lucky to see Strootani had two
home runs. You never really see that when you go
to the Dodger game, and I'm just I just feel
so so grateful. All of Dodger Stadium today, all of
Loge was just so full of love, full of cheer.
(14:27):
I really want to give a special shout out to
my uncle Peter. He actually bought a couple of like
postseason baseballs and was giving them out to like kids
around our area and whatnot, and like the glove was
just was there for for seeing the Dodgers and whatnot.
And I just I just felt like it was like
the first postseason game for me personally, where I just
felt like there was magic in the air, you know.
(14:49):
I just I just felt really enthused to see all
nine innings be played out and whatnot.
Speaker 17 (14:54):
And yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
In the air when you score ten runs, David, no
doubt about it. And great job by your uncle Peter
being the playoffs. Santa Claus out there, got a run,
We got a full board of calls. Eight six six
nine eighty seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Rob Low, Jason Bateman, they were here too, Joe Koy
was here as well.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
ESPN was showing Jason Bateman.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
I don't think they knew they had one of the
most popular comedians sitting right there as well. Eight six
six nine eighty seven, two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers beat the Reds tonight ten to five. They can
advance with the win tomorrow night, and they have a
pretty good pitcher. The picture of the month in September
on the mound and to me one of the cy
(15:42):
Young finalists. I believe Paul Skeens is going to win,
of course, but I really do believe yamamotos should have
a second place or third place finish at the very least.
I mean, I know these East Coast people just want
to slob or all over Christopher Sanchez, but take a
look Yamamoto. Yamamoto has been dominant from day one, and
(16:04):
he was one out of way.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
From a no hitter?
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Was Christopher Sanchez one out of way from a no hitter?
If you look at their strikeouts, their whip, their el
they're right there. They're right there, eight six, six nine,
eight seven, two five seventy. By the way, key key, Hernandez.
He's fine. He'll be back in the starting lineup tomorrow night.
And we'll see about Will Smith. We'll give you an
update on him a little bit later in the show.
(16:28):
I believe it was a good thing Dave Roberts did
not go to Will Smith as a pinch hitter tonight
because it wasn't necessary.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
That gives him an extra day to.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Allow that fracture in the top of his right hand
to get one more extra day. And I kind of
feel like Will Smith will be behind the plate when
the NLDS begins. Let's head downstairs again to the Dodger clubhouse.
Ta Oscar Hernandez hit two home runs tonight, had four
RBIs October Tao for the Dodgers was back onto sports
(17:02):
net LA.
Speaker 20 (17:03):
It meant a lot. That's that's why we play this game.
But you know, it's it's good to have a regular season,
uh uh and win, but it's it's better when you
win in the playoffs, and uh, now that we're here,
we're gonna do everything that we can to has been special.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Going out on the field for the first playoff.
Speaker 21 (17:20):
Game this year.
Speaker 20 (17:21):
Yeah, I mean it reminded me so much of last year.
Even though we win the division last year and went
straight to the championship, but playoff this playoffs, so we're
not We're gonna keep pushing, keep playing hard and trying
to win tomorrow.
Speaker 17 (17:35):
Two starts to go, two starts to go.
Speaker 12 (17:37):
Under Green almost had a no hitter against the.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
Cubs of one hitter, complete game.
Speaker 12 (17:41):
Uh, what were you guys seeing against him that you
and showing had success early against him.
Speaker 20 (17:45):
And knock them out to just be able to hit
the balls the pitches that he get to us on
the strike zone and then put it and play and
then with a hard contact, so not missing a lot
of pictures in the strike zone. I think that was
the key for for us.
Speaker 22 (18:01):
Did you always have confidence that when the playoffs arrived
and the stakes ratcheted up that the focus of this
team would be where needed to be and did tonight
sort of validate that for you?
Speaker 20 (18:12):
Yeah, you know, we've been playing really good baseball the
last two weeks, three weeks. We know the things that
that we can do, especially in big moments like this,
So yeah, the focus is always there. But you I
think as a player, you get more when the playoff starts.
(18:33):
So it's it's just it's just hard to explain, but uh,
we put a little more of everything just to try
and win.
Speaker 7 (18:44):
Obviously, you guys having.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
The vibe it hasn't wasn't a little bit easier, especially
the way you guys finished the season offensively, to kind
of just keep that going into tonight's game.
Speaker 20 (18:55):
Yeah, you know, it's always better to have one of
the two best record so you can go straight, but
it wasn't the case, so we have to be ready
for this and just keep going.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
All right, there's Oscar Hernandez inside the Dodger clubhouse. Thanks
to sports Net LA for bringing that to us ta.
Oscar with two home runs tonight, following Shoho Tani's lead,
who also had two home runs tonight, and the Dodgers
beat the Reds ten to five in Game one of
this best of three wildcard series. You know this is
(19:29):
not a surprise the Dodger offense doing what they're doing.
If you go back the way they ended the season,
finishing with a five game winning streak. They put up
five runs one game in Arizona, eight runs in the
clincher to win the NL West in the last game there.
And maybe the least talked about thing that happened this
(19:51):
past weekend was the fact that Dodgers went into Seattle
and casually swept one of, if not the best team
in the American League in the Seattle Mariners.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
In their house.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
With their pitchers and their hitters in the lineup, the
Dodgers scored a combined fourteen runs and outscored Seattle fourteen
to six in a three game sweep.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
The Dodgers flipped the switch a few weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
The switch is very much on and if you want
to point to one guy that flipped the switch. It
might be ti Oscar Hernandez, because the first or the
last two months leading into September, we were wondering whether
or not Taoscar Hernandez was going to be even starting
(20:41):
in the postseason, was he even going to be playing
in right field. There's a lot of people that don't
believe in resumes and credibility. I'm a big believer in that,
and Taioscar Hernandez had a lot of credit built up
from last year. I knew he was going to get right.
It was just a matter of time. And here he
(21:03):
is hitting two home runs and driving in four runs
in the first game of the postseason for the Dodgers.
He definitely flipped the switch and it's working. But this
Dodger team, this Dodger offense, it's been a full go
now for the last couple of weeks, even going back
to you know, their series in San Francisco, where in
(21:24):
two games, the last two games in San Francisco, they
put up twenty three runs. And that's why I wasn't
surprised by this outcome. This is a difference in weight class.
The Dodgers are the heavyweights and the Reds offense are lightweights.
I'm sorry they are. They don't have a guy that
(21:44):
said twenty five home runs, they don't have a hitter
that has a seven hundred ops, they don't have a
pitcher that has close to two hundred strikeouts. This is
a complete mismatch. And the only way the Dodgers were
going to get upset tonight or in this series is
if they did not have the focus and take this
(22:05):
game seriously, which they did resounding fashion ten to five
win over the Reds. Let's go out to Eddie, who
is at Dodger Stadium tonight. Hi Eddie, you're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 23 (22:19):
Thanks for having me on, David.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 23 (22:21):
Yeah. I was just over a couple of sections to
the right from home plate, so it was awesome being
at the game.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
And what all humble brag?
Speaker 14 (22:32):
Was that?
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Like a humble brag, Eddie.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
You're like, hey, I was at the game and I
had fantastic seats. It sounded like a humble brag.
Speaker 23 (22:40):
Well, I was surprised that we got those seats too,
so not really bragging, just really excited that.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
We were able to be there today.
Speaker 19 (22:50):
Okay, what do you got yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 23 (22:53):
I was just saying, you know, this this game was
what a roller coaster, you know, being propelled up. I
guess you could say, you know, ticking all the way
up to its high point after the taoscar home run,
you know, and then obviously the show Hey home run.
But this roller coaster, it's stalled out in the eighth right,
(23:17):
I wanted to ask, you know, there's this thing called momentum,
obviously in sports. What happens when in baseball, you know,
a team is rolling through the game and then it just.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Gets stalled out completely.
Speaker 23 (23:34):
You're talking about flipping the switch for offense. When is
our When is the bullpen gonna flip this switch?
Speaker 3 (23:43):
Well, did you see Blake Trinan in the ninth inning tonight, Eddie.
Speaker 23 (23:47):
I'm talking about between Blake's down.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
I know what you're talking about, But you're lumping in
twelve pitchers. There were three that pitched in the eighth inning.
Two of them did not pitch very well. Jack Dryer did,
he restored order, but Vesia and Enriquez did not pitch well.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
What can I say?
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Enriquez first playoff taste in a moment like that, you know,
I know he was part of it a little bit
last year, but he's being counted on for some more
important innings, and he just seemed like he was pitching
away from contact. Jack Dryer started out that way and
then all of a sudden recentered himself and said, hey,
(24:29):
what am I doing here? I'm gonna let my fastball eat.
That's what Enriquez has to do as well. So sorry,
I'm not buying that narrative. The momentum has not switched
and changed jerseys to mister Red. If Blake Tryning would
have came in and gave up more runs, then yeah,
I would have said, Okay, the Reds have a little
(24:49):
bit more confidence than what they had in the seventh inning,
but the Dodger offense, the Reds just can't keep up
with it. And like I said, Emmit, she and Tyler last.
Now they'll be available for tomorrow Night's game, and I
don't think you'll see a repeat of what we saw
in the eighth inning. Eight six six nine eight seven
two five seventy is the phone number. I have a
(25:11):
pair of tickets for tomorrow Night's game to give away.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Should be fun.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
Yeah, I'm a moto on the mound coming off a
big Game one win for the Dodgers with the chance
to advance to the NLDS, let's head back downstairs to
the podium to hear from Red's manager Terry Francona.
Speaker 13 (25:29):
I mean, you could see the kind of the obvious stuff,
like you know, the power to the fastball velocity in
the upper nineties, spins the ball. I thought the big
difference maker was his his change up, and it wasn't
like it was his ability to manipulate the change up
like even variant, like you throw one that was eighty
(25:50):
seven and one that was eighty two, like off of
the first change up, and he threw multiple like two, three,
four in a row at times and all different speeds
and then you know, you throw it ninety seven in
there and it becomes difficult.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
That was Terry Francona talking about what he saw from
Blake Snell.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Probably after a disappointing performance.
Speaker 13 (26:14):
Well, I mean, I haven't talked to him yet or anything,
but you know, he just he didn't locate and like
you threw a couple of breaking balls, one to tay
Oscar and then the next one to Headman that were
just you know, it wasn't where he was trying to
throw them and when he didn't locate, he really paid
a price for it. And that happened to us with
(26:36):
other you know, with suit or two. If you make
a mistake, they they can make you pay.
Speaker 17 (26:42):
All right.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
There's Terry francona Reds manager, World Series champion manager, that
is a winner, and he got the Reds back to
the postseason. Unfortunately for them, they faced the big bad
Dodgers and they put it on him tonight ten to

tomorrow night at six oh eight. Tickets are available. I'm

Speaker 6 (28:02):
So, that's exactly what we were talking about, Mole taking
advantage of opportunities like that early in the game.
Speaker 18 (28:08):
Now Edmond Looks went.
Speaker 9 (28:10):
High in the air, right field, to the corner.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
It's out of hair. The Dodgers go back to back.
Speaker 8 (28:21):
Here in the third, Tommy Tanks heads another.
Speaker 7 (28:25):
It is now five nothing Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
The Dodgers hit three home runs tonight off a Hunter
Green all in all, five home runs and a ten

(29:13):
Eight six six nine seven two five seventy is the
phone number. It was great to see a couple of
former Dodgers here at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Kent to Mayada,
surprised me. Came into the radio booth to say hello.
He was broadcasting for Japanese television. He's getting ready to
pitch again next year. He was with a couple of
(29:36):
different teams, the Tigers, the Cubs, the Yankees. So he's
looking forward to pitching next year, whether it's here in
Major League Baseball or back in Japan.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
So it was great to see Kenta.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
And also it was great to see Joe Kelly and
his Mariachi Joe jacket throwing out the first pitch. I
was hoping he wouldn't get in the way of Blake's
now because that was his stage in that dugout. Joe,
it was time for you to get out because snell
Zilla was getting ready for the start.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
So certainly a big night here at Dodger Stadium.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
All the stars were out and Blake Snell showed out
seven innings, nine strikeouts. We caught up with snell Zilla
after the game. How did it feel out there and
how important was that first st inning for you?
Speaker 2 (30:25):
It was it was important. Uh, but it was good.
Speaker 21 (30:28):
I felt good, felt confident going in, and I was
just having an attack. I mean, that's the most important
thing you can do in the postseason is attack, get
ahead and make them swing at your pitches.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
I felt like this team was going to swing at
the first pitch early. Were you're noticing that too?
Speaker 21 (30:44):
Yeah, I mean they're an aggressive team.
Speaker 2 (30:46):
They have some some passive guys, but a lot of
them are aggressive, So I knew that was gonna be
the case. But I needed to get strike one.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
I know you were thinking about your curve ball. How
did it feel tonight?
Speaker 2 (30:56):
A lot better?
Speaker 17 (30:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (30:57):
I felt like all Austrey was good.
Speaker 21 (30:59):
Just change up was getting the better results, so I
went with that, and then fastball little Jesch was pretty good.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
For the most part.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
You wanted to challenge yourself by sunning here to be
on this stage. What did it mean to you to
have the fans cheering you on with two strikes in
the sixth inning and seventh innings tonight?
Speaker 21 (31:18):
Well, it was big and I want, I want more
of it. So we got we gotta win tomorrow and
keep us going. Hey, you are a big part of
Game one. That's always a big one in these short series.
Snail Zilla on full display tonight. Thanks for stopping. Yeah,
I appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (31:33):
Dave.
Speaker 22 (31:35):
There he is.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Blake Snell a big night.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
He gets the win in Game one of the Wildcard Series,
and five of his nine strikeouts came on the change up.
You heard Terry Francona talk about it, and you know
what's incredible. I said this coming into the start. It
did feel like the people in that press conference room
yesterday were disappointed that it was Blake Snell pitching tonight
(31:58):
and not Yamamo or show Hey Otani. And I told
some of the media people up here that were wondering,
why are they starting Blake Snell. Shouldn't they be starting
their best? I said, wait a minute, they are starting
their best. He has two cy youngs. He threw a
no hitter against this team last year. He only needs
four or five days rest to come back and pitch.
(32:22):
They are starting their best. No disrespect to Yamamoto, who's
been outstanding, and uh Otani, but Blake Snell is the
best that they have in this type of short tournaments.
And Yamamoto certainly has something that Blake Snell wants, and
that's a World Series ring. Yamamoto proved it last year
(32:42):
in October. Snell step one needs to continue to prove
himself because there's still a lot of doubters out there,
and case in point tonight, I've taken phone calls about
the bullpen. Not one of you, not one of you,
have called in and talked about the great start Blake
Snell gave the Dodgers tonight. Eight six six seven two
(33:04):
five seventy is the phone number.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Mark.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
You were at Dodgers Stadium tonight on snell Zilla Day.
What do you got complaints or you want to celebrate
a win?
Speaker 1 (33:14):
No, I want to celebrate a win. I agree with
what you were saying. I was about to say two
things I'd like to say. One is that when it
was eight nothing in the seventh inning, people all around
me were had left and I thought, hmmm, And then
afterwards you saw what happened. They missed. The complete complexion
(33:35):
of the game shows you should never leave a Dodger game.
I'm glad they won. I wasn't crazy about the eighth inning,
but I don't like people leaving when it's eight nothing.
That's one thing. I thought the game was a microcosm
of what you were saying. I thought Blake Nell was
outstanding the great starting pitching, great hitting, and questionable bullpen.
(33:57):
Just with a couple of people, I agree. It's not everyone.
So that one comment. The second comment I have is
you mentioned former Dodgers at the stadium. One person did
not mention was Gavin Lux. I was happy to finally
see him in ninth inning. My question to you is
why he was not a starter. He obviously knows the team.
You know, it's a lot of the pitchers, and I
(34:18):
just wondered why they started somebody else instead of him.
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Because he's a left handed hitter doesn't hit lefties really well.
Blake Snell is starting, that's a tough matchup for any hitter,
let alone a left handed hitter.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Like Gavin Lux. So that's the reason why.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
And I'm sure you'll see him in there tomorrow night
against the right hander and Yamamoto. Thanks for the phone call, Mark,
And when the Reds were here at the end of August,
we saw Gavin Lux DH we saw Gavin Lux play
left field, and we even some go back to where
he played for the Dodgers on their way to the
championship second base. Let's go out to Mia, who is
(34:54):
at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Miya, you're on Dodger Talk.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
Hi him, I think so.
Speaker 18 (35:07):
Can you hear me now?
Speaker 1 (35:08):
No?
Speaker 13 (35:09):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (35:10):
Eight sixty six nine eighty seven two five seventy is
the phone number if you have to ask me if
I can hear you, that means you're not ready. Let's
go out to Bruce, who is at Dodgers Stadium tonight. Hi, Bruce,
can you hear me?
Speaker 17 (35:23):
I certainly can DV And it's like it's not quite
Vince Scully, but you're in the veins. So what a BDV?
First of all, shout out to signors October in the Uh,
Enrique Hernando's brothers who are.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Not right hernandez Ermanos from the Dodgers.
Speaker 17 (35:48):
Sameon. So the obvious thing about the bullpen and and
the snell was just outstanding. I mean, the the beautiful
thing about it is he wasn't nibbling, he was going
after people. He didn't walk meeople and other than the
one hit he was like under seventy pitches six innings through,
and so he got the you know, he got through
(36:08):
the seventh and we had a big lead. So that's
the time that I was surprised to see Vessia, But
I wasn't surprised to see Enriquez or Driver because that's
the time to let them we there be because the
pressure will be on as we go through this. We
won one game, We're gonna win twelve more with the
Phillies being our biggest challenge, and so I have no
(36:29):
concern they were overthrowing, and at least Enriquez was, and
I wish he walked the third guy because he was
that was his last batter, and as long as the
ball didn't leave the part, I was not going to
freak out because we would have seen Roki or she
In or any or Trynean or any of our big
guys game.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
It would have been a different group of guys. And
I personally believe Robleski was the right guy in a blowout.
So you don't have to use Vessia in that situation.
You have them ready for tomorrow night if necessary. But
that also, you know, tells me Dave Roberts has Tyler
Glass now and Emmitt Shean in his back pocket, even
(37:09):
though Shean was warming up pretty quickly there in.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
The eighth inning.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Thank you for the phone call. Eight sixty six nine
eight seven two five seventy is the phone number. We
still have a pair of tickets to give away for
Game two tomorrow night. We'll get to that in a second,
but first.
Speaker 7 (37:26):
It's time to go around the horn with Jose Mota.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
All Right, Jose Mota, I've had to talk about the
eighth inning more than I thought I would tonight.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Let's start with Blake Snell.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
A lot of people still doubt how good he is,
but tonight was a performance that, you know, felt like
all of his pitches were working.
Speaker 19 (37:48):
Hey, let's talk about Blakes now all you want, and
that's what we would need to talk about. I'll be
happy to do it. Listen, when you have a guy
that goes a free agency and a guy that has
been there before, a guy with tremendous stuff and he
can simplify it and pitch with two pitches, he go
out there and get that guy. That's what we saw today,
(38:09):
a guy that never get started learning. He said it
quite rapidly and vividly and explicitly yesterday when he talked
about getting better each time, learning, applying, and you know,
you gotta just admire guys like this because they want
the baseball day. He's been there before, He's not new
to the playoff scenery. He's done it all, He's got
(38:29):
the individual awards, and today we saw a guy on
his game, I mean an artist perfecting his craft every
single time out. Not take it for granted the guys
who are with the basket because they can hurt you
with anything, be making a mistake. But man, it was
fun to watch a true number one in baseball with
any team go out and get the job done and
on top of everything, get some run support.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Jose Motis joining us after the Dodgers beat the Reds
ten to five. I thought that first inning was huge.
Jose Blake sets down the Reds in order seven pitches,
and then O'tani hits a leadoff home run that kind
of set the tone for the rest of the game.
Speaker 19 (39:09):
It does, I mean, Blake, I could have won this
game one nothing in the way he was pitching and
the way he was locating everything. I was doing my
nose and talking to Lose during the game about you
don't see very many guys in today's game, pitch with field,
you know, pitch with the field of you know, Clinton kersche. Hey,
I have a feel that this might be the pitch
he's looking for. Let me counteract that. But to double
(39:29):
up on change ups when the book says no, to
triple up unchange just when the book says no. It's remarkable.
Just understanding who you are, where you are, who you're facing,
what they're looking for, and just going after and going
against their plan. It's just amazing.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
But show Hey hit the ball like the way you did.
Speaker 19 (39:46):
I mean it reminded me of last year when they
were down against Dylan season. Showy comes through it a
big way and consists the tone about, Hey, this offen
is not going to be anywhere. It's not going to
be twenty two or twenty three. We are here, a
different tone that says the tone for the offense to go, Hey,
we did it against this guy before. Just allow him
to make mistakes, don't spread his own, and before you
know it, Tasker shows up and turn the I'll go
(40:08):
back to snow. Given a guy like that support early,
it becomes just a different ballgain because then the team
on the other side is pressed against the wall in
the third inning, and it's hard to overcome facing the
number one guy with even three runs on the board.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Did coming into the game, scouts and other players that
told me that Hunter Green's one hundred fastball is very
hittable and it wasn't a good matchup for him against
the Dodgers. Did you believe that played out or do
you believe there was a little bit of nerves that
also played into this.
Speaker 19 (40:40):
I'm going to say the hitters were more than ready
for this, because number one, he has never had success
at Dodgers Stad. He's never won a game there. And
you know the reason I say that is because he
can miss with fastballs. If it's straight at one on one,
somebody's going to hit it. But with the Dodgers that
so well that we have seen now with the in
the last three weeks is they're not chasing out of
(41:03):
the zone to make put themselves in position where now
the counter is one and two, oho and two. Before
you know it, you're finishing on me. Try to be
protective and he can read. So you're working enough at
bats and they've added a lot of team at bats
the last three weeks, where one mistake comes because you
force it with a long at bat, a good contact
here and there, and now you capitalize on it without
(41:23):
truynd do too much. I mean, look at the control
swinging by show Hey, look at the control swing by Toskar,
who could not hit a fastibal three weeks ago. He understood,
he made adjustments. Uh, went to a different bat and
there's the results. But I guess the guy like Green
got to tip your hat and know that you don't
know what kind of stuff he's gonna beyond. Meaning the
fascile could be running, it could not be running. But
man if he makes a mistake, capitalized on and they
(41:45):
did all.
Speaker 2 (41:47):
Right, hose before I let you go strategy wise tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (41:50):
For Dave Roberts, he has two big right handed arms
at his disposal. I mean, Shean was warming up when
things were starting to go a little sideways in that
eighth inning. If Yamamoto can give the Dodgers six or
seven innings like Snell did tonight, do you see Dave
Roberts going to an Image Sheen or Tyler Glass now
(42:12):
to get the final six or nine outs.
Speaker 1 (42:15):
I think he should.
Speaker 19 (42:16):
There's no time to mess around. I mean this short series,
things can turn around so quickly. I mean one swing
today from the rest of the Visus vota things would have,
you know, change very quickly. So yes, you go for
if you have a lead tomorrow and Yamamoto gives you this,
you know, seventh inning, you got to go out there
and just know that you're not going to experid with anybody.
And with the boot show, there's some guys need some work,
guys that perhaps may not be in the next roster.
(42:37):
But go out there and shut it down.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Hey, oh, jose got too excited, hung up on himself?
All right?
Speaker 3 (42:45):
He agrees Glass now and she and on deck for
tomorrow night. And I can't disagree with that. Eight six
six nine, eight seven two five seventy is the phone number.
Dodgers beat the Reds ten to five. Let's go out
to Culver City. David, You're on Dodger Talk. How you doing,
David great Man?
Speaker 9 (43:04):
Today was a statement. And anytime a starting pitcher can
go seven innings in general, I feel like it's a coup.
But to do it during the postseason, that's huge. And
this year I feel like there was so much doubt,
like when Mookie had his cold Street even. I remember
(43:25):
someone calling in to you saying, oh, man, I think
now show hey, I'm worried about show hey. Who then
goes on to hit fifty five home runs. I just
feel like this season I've heard up until.
Speaker 4 (43:38):
Recently nothing but doom and gloom, and now it's just
so clear that the Dodgers are here, They're going to
be dominating, and it's just a pleasure to watch.
Speaker 9 (43:51):
I can't wait to see the rest of the postseason.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
All right, David, thank you for the phone call. Let's
go out to Pasadena. Manny. You're on Dodger Talk Live
from Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 1 (44:01):
Hi, Manny, how are you doing there. I appreciate you
taking a call. Love the coverage of the show.
Speaker 5 (44:07):
Definitely don't want to overlooks now. I don't want to
harp on the bullpen. I just want to definitely remind
people that we're seeing the ball much better.
Speaker 23 (44:12):
You know. The five home runs slightly.
Speaker 5 (44:15):
Different pitches, all of them, you know, and the lefty
hitters O Tawani and the Tommy they didn't get beat inside.
You know, they had the quick hands, they weren't able,
they were able to turn on that and make them pay.
And then obviously Dale, you know, taking it where it's
pitched for his first home run, for the second home
run with the first one running, had fast hands.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
Something left out over the plate. That's what we need
to do.
Speaker 14 (44:38):
You know.
Speaker 5 (44:38):
Sometimes I get frustrated because we take too many good fastballs,
and I know we'd like to walk and get on base,
but you can let those cookies go in the posts, man.
So that staked a lot of runs and it looks
like we needed them all the way to the end.
Speaker 3 (44:52):
All right, Manny, you were a little negative, a little
negative there, and you didn't really celebrate blakes now as
much as I would have liked you too.
Speaker 2 (45:01):
But you sound like a diehard Dodger fan.
Speaker 3 (45:04):
So do you want to come to the game tomorrow
night to watch the Dodgers advance to the NLDS.
Speaker 1 (45:11):
Absolutely?
Speaker 5 (45:11):
I would love that, man. I had a great Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
I'd love to have a great Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (45:15):
No doubt.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
But you gotta say the magic words, who hooks you
up with Dodger playoff tickets?
Speaker 5 (45:24):
I'm sorry, you.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Tell me who hooks you up? Who hooks you up
with Dodger tickets?
Speaker 8 (45:31):
Manny?
Speaker 2 (45:32):
We need a good one.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
And five seventy. You guys are the best. Love you guys.
Speaker 3 (45:37):
Oh there you go, Manny, see all right that you
got the tickets. Many We'll see you out here tomorrow night.
Eight six six nine eighty seven two five seventy is
the phone number. Dodgers beat the Reds ten to five.
Yama Moto will be on the mound tomorrow for the Dodgers.
What will be the availability of Will Smith? He was
available tonight to come off the bench as a pinchit
(45:59):
or what will it be tomorrow? Well, before the game,
we had a chance to ask Dave Roberts about how
Will Smith being active on this wildcard roster fits in. Okay, well,
I'll speak for Dave myself. Dave Roberts said before the
game that Will would be available to pinch it tonight
(46:22):
and tomorrow coming off the bench and believes that by
the time if the Dodgers are fortunate enough to be
able to participate in the NLDS, will Smith, the way
his right hand is healing, should be good to go
to catch game one of the NLDS in Philadelphia. Now,
(46:43):
last night, going into the Dodgers' workout, there was a
little trepidation amongst the Dodgers' decision makers and trainers about
whether or not will would be on the wildcard roster
at all. Well, after he faced some live pitching, they
were sold they actually believe that this could actually work
the way he came out of it to be available
(47:05):
as a pinchhitter, and whether or not he is needed
Tomorrow night remains to be seen. I do believe the
Dodgers are going to win tomorrow and close out this series,
but if the Reds force a deciding Game three, then
there might be more of a chance where Dave Roberts
(47:25):
feels the urgency to not hold Will Smith back and
just throw him out there behind the plate to see
whether or not he could be a force behind the
plate and in the lineup. But the best case scenario
is the way I see it is the Dodgers close
out the series, you don't even need to use Will
Smith off the bench, and he's ready to go to
(47:48):
catch Game one of the NLDS in Philadelphia on Saturday.
So that's the latest on Will Smith Tomorrow Night Game
two pitching matchup. I'm a Momoto who is coming off
a great month of September twelve and eight with an
ERA of two forty nine during the regular season, going
up against right hander Zach Littel, who is ten and
(48:12):
eight with an ERA of three eighty one. Lttel he
has a cut fastball at about ninety one miles an hour.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
That seems to be a.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Bad matchup going up against the Dodger offense that can
hit those type of pitches from a guy like Zach Littel.
Morongo Casino Dodgers on Deck begins at five o'clock. First
pitch of Game two of the Wildcard Series at six
oh eight thanks to Coline back at our Burbank Studios,

to five over the Reds.
