Speaker 5 (00:36):
Welcome to Dodgers on tack. Now your host walking you
up to first pitch.
Speaker 8 (00:41):
Tim Kas Hi, everybody, and welcome in to my Wrongo casino.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
Dodgers on deck.
Speaker 8 (00:48):
Hope you're enjoying your Thursday afternoon as your world champion
Los Angeles Dodgers have.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Not enjoyed their road trips so far.
Speaker 8 (00:55):
In Pittsburgh, the Pirates have not been very friendly to
the Dodgers the first two games, as the Dodgers now
sit at seventy eight and sixty one on this season.
Dodgers still first place atop the NL West, as the
Dodgers have dropped two in a row.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
The Padres have dropped four.
Speaker 8 (01:12):
In a row, so the Dodgers maintaining a two and
a half game lead over San Diego in the division
going into play to this afternoon. As the Dodgers need
to get a win to salvage this series in Pittsburgh,
so they give the ball to Blake Snell, who will
go for the Dodgers. But on the other side it's
Paul Skeens, the hard throwing right hander out of El Toro.
He'll get the start for Pittsburgh. First pitch coming up
(01:34):
at three point forty coming up over the next hour
here on Marongo Casino, Dodgers on deck. We're here from
Dodger manager Dave Roberts. We'll dive deeper into this pitching matchup.
David Vasego is one on one with Blake Snell. You've
got your Dodgers magical moment, DV. Of course, we'll check
in throughout the hour, and shortly we visit with Kirsten
Watson from Sports and at LA, but not before we
(01:56):
check in with Tim Never and Rick Monday out the
Gallpin motors brought to Cass Booth well yesterday it was
a case of no offense and some good pitching, but
the Dodgers just could not string together any hits yesterday
against the Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
Pirates and their starter Braxton Ashcraft.
Speaker 8 (02:14):
Even though the Dodgers loaded the bases multiple times, they
could not get that big hit. They straighted ten runners
in the game, over seven with runners in scoring position.
Immett she meanwhile got the start. He pitched into the
fifth inning, but he got into trouble early in the first.
Brian Reynolds took him deep.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
But this one here in Pittsburgh is certainly one of
a kind. This is a great one.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Three to two.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
That one has swung on drill deep to right field
at his back over the Klementy wall and gone on
a three to two pitch with two outs, Brian Reynolds
hits a solo home run, his fifteenth of the year.
It's the sixth the loud by him at Shean and
the Pirates.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
Are out to a one to nothing lead, Pittsburgh up
one to nothing.
Speaker 9 (02:57):
Just like that.
Speaker 8 (02:58):
The Dodgers again had opportunities as loaded a couple of times,
but could not get a hit. Couldn't even get a
walk to bring in a run. Andrew McCutcheon, Yeah, it's
like fifty years old. Hit a home run to the
left in the second that game made it a two
to nothing in Pittsburgh lead. It remained that way into
the six when the Pirates, leading two to nothing, tacked
on one more against the Dodgers.
Speaker 6 (03:19):
One Baldos strikes pitch I had a swung on and
lifted the right field and deep going back after it.
Teoscar he's at the track, he turns around, it's off
the wall. Then Samas around third. He'll score and into
a second with a two out run scoring double as
Joey Bart and the Pirates lead it three to nothing.
Speaker 8 (03:36):
Three to nothing felt like thirteen to nothing the way
the Dodgers offense was not doing its job last night.
Shoeyotani was two for five, had two of the Dodgers
five hits in the game. Dalton Rushing had a pinch
hit off the bench, Freddy Freeman had a hit.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Alse Call had a hit, but that was it.
Speaker 8 (03:54):
An over night for Paz, an over night for Keiky Hernandez.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
The die just could not get the hit they needed.
Speaker 8 (04:03):
They had the five hits, they had six walks in
the game, but again could not get the hit they needed.
To drive in anything last night as they get shut
out in Pittsburgh three to nothing the losso you can
deal with the case. San Diego also lost, so they
got a two and a half game lead in the division.
They wrap up this series in Pittsburgh, a great pitching
(04:25):
matchup weather permitted, as rain is happening right now in Pittsburgh,
but we expected on time. First pitch Paul Skins and
Blake Snell the pitching matchup and with more we head
out to the Galpin Motors broadcast booth as you welcome in,
Tim Neverett and Rick Monday, guys, Tim.
Speaker 6 (04:39):
Thanks again, rainy afternoon into the evening here in Pittsburgh.
The tarp was on the field for a long time today,
but the weather has cleared out. Ready for some baseball tonight.
Paul Skins at nine and nine with a major League
best ERA of two point zero five and Blake Snell
three and three the left with an ERA of two
forty one one will go. The Dodgers have lost the
(05:01):
first two games of this series and maybe surprisingly so
shut out yesterday for the eighth time this year, and
for the Pirates it was their seventeenth shutout of the season.
They're thirteenth at home. Dodgers overall still two and a
half up on the Padres after the Padres were swept
by the Orioles yesterday, seventy eight and sixty one the record,
(05:22):
and the Dodgers now will find themselves two games under
five hundred on the road, where in September and recent
years that's an uncharacteristic place for the Dodgers.
Speaker 7 (05:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
The other part too, is tim We've been talking about
it the last number of days since the All Star break. Also,
two games under five hundred, that is a long period
of time. They're twenty and twenty two since the break,
and don't count on the Sandego p Andres continuing to
lose all the time, and also don't count on the
Pittsburgh Pirates to take it easy, because the Pirates come
(05:52):
in having won eleven of fifteen. They're scoring runs, they're
getting good pitching, They've got their eighths on the mound
tonight in Paul's Skeins. Dodgers hoping that Blake Snelk can
be up to the opportunity tonight as well. But the
Dodgers have to figure out how they're going to have
some offense and the other part too is they need
some electricity because there has not been an overload in
(06:13):
the circuits of the last number of games.
Speaker 6 (06:16):
Well, the Dodgers made a roster move today and this
is in relation to Will Smith. Smith is getting a
CT scan on his hand. He took a foul ball
off his right hand. It's not to the point where
the Dodgers want to put him on the il, so
they think he might be able to play Monday. Dalton
Rushing is expected to carry the load over the weekend.
But there was a catcher the Dodgers got in the
(06:37):
trade they made with Tampa Bay for Hunter Fiducia, who's
a three for one deal. The Dodgers got three players.
Ben Rhetvett was one of them, and he is a
catcher who has been activated. Alex Freeland, the infielder, has
been optioned back to Triple A, and Rohortvett is active.
The Dodgers will carry three catchers right now until they
know what's.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Up with Will and they need someone who's going to
be back there and Will Smith. You know, it's going
to take normally twenty four to maybe forty eight hours.
Really understand the full strength of that injury. We saw
him last night, took the foul ball off the right hand.
That was an extended time out really by last night's
homeplate umpire Jacob Metz, who was ready to get back
(07:18):
into play and could tell that Smith was still not
ready and another delay. So that could be a big,
big blow to this Dodger Bak club. And hopefully everything
is going to come out with the examinations and a
positive ending.
Speaker 6 (07:30):
Now, one thing we've seen, and the ball in this
ballpark for whatever reason, has not been carrying as well
as it usually does in years past. I had a
conversation this afternoon with Andrew McCutcheon, a long time Pittsburgh Pirate,
and he was telling me the same thing, that the
ball has not been carrying.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Here this year.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
As a result, the Pirates have a major league low
one hundred and two home runs. He hit one here
last night, but it was to the short corner and
left field. But he said, that's why you see the
outfielders here playing shallow for pitch.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
You know.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
I noticed it in Game one of this series, and
in particular when there's runners on base, trying to make
sure that they're shallow enough where they can make a
play at home plate and kind of reduce the opportunity
or other teams to be able to score. But it
is surprising all the years that we have come in,
I have not noticed an outfield playing as shallow as
what we've seen the Pirates in this series thus far.
Speaker 6 (08:20):
Dodgers will be challenged today by Paul Skeens, one of
the best pitchers in the game. Skeens nine to nine
with a two to oho five and run average. Blake
Snell will counter Snow looking for some runs behind him.
He's three and three to forty one the eeright.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
All right, thank you guys, as we can. You down
to first pitch.
Speaker 8 (08:37):
Dodger fans, get that game damil on at Shaky's Pizza
Parlor or order your Shaky's Pizza chicken mojos right now
at Shankys dot com. All right, coming up here on Marongo,
because you know Dodgers on deck. You are going to
hear from the manager, Dave Roberts. You're gonna hear from.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Today's starter Plate Snell.
Speaker 8 (08:55):
You're gonna hear from David Vatsay, our Dodger insider.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
We got your pitching matchup, we got.
Speaker 8 (09:01):
Your Otani rewind though coming up and a visit with Kirsten.
Speaker 4 (09:04):
Watson from Sports at LA.
Speaker 8 (09:06):
That's all coming up as we lead you up to
first pitch on this Thursday afternoon from Pittsburgh Dodgers Empires.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Thanks for being with us.
Speaker 8 (09:14):
I'm Tim Kase' the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers audio nowhere.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
This is Morongo Casino Dodgers hunting the game on your
home for LA Dodgers Baseball.
Speaker 8 (09:29):
He hits the Dodgers and the Pirates on this Thursday afternoon.
Blake Snell Paul scheme for the pitching matchup should be
a good one from PNC Park.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
First pitch coming up at three forties. This is the Otani.
Speaker 6 (09:43):
Rewhd down the two on the way and Otani swings.
He hammers it to the right center field gap. That's
gonna get down and roll to the wall around first
and on his way to a second with a ringing
double is show hey o'tani double number twenty on the
season one one pitch. Oltani bounces it toward third, slowly
(10:03):
hit charging his Devanny catches throws safe at first as
O'tani he beat it out.
Speaker 8 (10:09):
Show Hey O'tani had two of the Dodgers five hits
last night, O'tani with a double number twenty on this season. Unfortunately,
the Dodgers couldn't push any runs across oh for seven
runners in scoring position. They stranded ten runners on base
yesterday as the Pirates shut out the Dodgers three to nothing.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
This is Kirston's Corner with Kirston Watson.
Speaker 8 (10:32):
Hey, kurrisit now Joins is brought to you by Cars
for Kids. Ready to donate that old car? Call eight
seven to seven Cars for Kids right now. Friendly agents
are standing by to take your donation. That's Cars with
the Gay to donate your car today. Looking at the lineup,
no Will Smith hereson. The Dodgers have Dalton rushing behind
the plate. What is the ladies with the Dodger All
(10:53):
star catcher.
Speaker 10 (10:54):
Yeah, So for Will Smith, we saw him come out
of the game last night after only two innings of
work and he took a foul ball off that right hand,
and so immediately afterwards once that inning ended, we saw
him talking to the training staff. He did put his
batting gloves on, so there was a thought that he
potentially could go back into the game. We thought he
was going to be fine, but then ultimately adult rushing
(11:15):
king off the bench to take that at bat in
the top of the third inning. So for will Smith,
he did have some imaging in an X ray, but
because it's the hand, there's obviously so many small bones
in that hand, they decided that they do want to
just have some more imaging just to be safe. You
don't want something to come up in a few weeks
that it's still bothering him and then it's a little
deeper into the regular season, when of course October is
(11:36):
now less than a month away. So they are going
to have him. Dave Roberts said, he's going to have
a CT scan here in Pittsburgh. They should have some
more information just this evening by the end of the game.
But he's not going to go on the IL just yet,
which I think is good news. They are going to
just kind of he likely it'll be down the next
few days and even while the team is in Baltimore
(11:57):
over the weekend.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
But so they are going to be having three.
Speaker 10 (12:00):
Catchers on the roster though. So Ben Ortsbett is here
with the team. He's going to be activated. We don't
know the move just yet, but with him here, he
just provides some backup for Dalton rushing, and then it
also provides for Will Smith to kind of take the
time to heal that he needs without going on the IoT.
Speaker 8 (12:17):
Looking at this pitching matchup in this series finale, I
know there's rain happening in Pittsburgh, but on the mound,
Paul Skeins Blakes.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Now sign me up, let's go. Yeah, No, this is
going to be a fun one.
Speaker 10 (12:27):
Now, I don't think it's going to be a fun
one for the Dodgers' hitters, if I'm being honest, just
because Paul Skins obviously has been so good and they're
looking to get going and get back on track, it
is going to be a tough one for this offense.
But the bigger thing is is when you have a
pitching matchup like these two guys, it's more of they
need to protect their starters. So as of right now,
everything seems to be continuing as planned. But if rain
(12:51):
were to come into the forecast a little bit closer
to game time, then we might see just because they
want to protect the starters, we might see a slight
delay just because of that. You'd rather start late than
have a start and stop with the pitching matchup of today.
Speaker 8 (13:04):
Cannot wait for this game to start. When it does, Kirston,
we appreciate it. Coming up here on Marongo Casino Dodgers
on Deck, we'll hear from today's starter, Blake Snell. We'll
get you an injury report that's coming up. Also, we'll
hear from the manager, Dave Roberts. That's next. It's a
Dodgers Empire. It's from PNC Parking, Pittsburgh. First pitch coming
up at three forty. I'm Tim Katson. This is the
(13:26):
world champion Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
This is Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deck on your home
for the blue All season law.
Speaker 8 (13:40):
Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deck continues on this Thursday afternoon
as we lead you up to Dodgers and Pirates Marongo
Casino Resort and spat a Grand Slam for good times.
Blake Snell, Paul Skeen's the pitching matchup. First pitch will
be on time at three forty.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
This is the Dodgers injury report.
Speaker 8 (14:02):
Here's any by UCLA Healthy, official medical partner of the
Los Angeles Dodgers. Will Smith not in the lineup out
with the right hand injury came out of the game
last night after a foul ball hit his right hand
while he's behind the plate catching. It's going to have
further test on that right hand. Dalton Rushing will get
the start behind the plate tonight. Alex Vessi on the IL,
(14:23):
Max Munsey on the IL, also battling a cold Rock
Stewart on the IL. Roki Sasaki in TRIPLEA, Oklahoma City.
He is trying to work his way back from a
shoulder impingement. All right, speaking of back, we head back
out to Pittsburgh and check in with the Dodger skipper.
Speaker 6 (14:39):
Anything else with Dave?
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Do you think questions for Dave? Dave?
Speaker 4 (14:42):
Can you just describe Dave? Can you talk about the pressure.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
In the dugouts with Dave Roberts.
Speaker 11 (14:49):
Will is doing fine. We are going to get a
CT scan just to kind of make sure that there's
nothing else going on. We obviously brought a backup catcher,
so rot Vet. We've brought word Vet Ben. So we
(15:13):
have an impending move coming up. We haven't decided on
that one yet, so for the moment, we'll have three catchers,
so we'll see. I mean, I think we're gonna give
Will a couple extra days. But to see him, you know,
playing over the weekend probably unlikely, but you know, we'll
kind of give him a few days before we have
to make that IO decision.
Speaker 10 (15:33):
So are you gonna have the hands as he had
them here in Pittsburgh or probably when the team gets
to Baltimore or is he going home?
Speaker 11 (15:38):
I have them here in Pittsburgh. And then so we
should know later today active catchers will all three catch
will be active you know, from about five o'clock local
time on.
Speaker 10 (15:52):
So you're gonna be making another A move will be
being made today.
Speaker 11 (15:55):
Yeah, do you have a Day four show? Us?
Speaker 2 (15:59):
A next SLUTA.
Speaker 11 (16:03):
Show. He's going to pitch on Monday in Los Angeles.
Let go shoot, Yeah, you're almost gonna go Saturday.
Speaker 9 (16:15):
How did you arrive Monday for the show?
Speaker 11 (16:18):
Just to give him some extra time, just to kind
of get his body, you know, all the stuff that
he's still going through. He's still kind of dealing with
some chest stuff and some fatigue and obviously dhing. So
I think that to kind of give him the best chance,
you know, to go five innings. And I think that
was kind of the thought. And Clayton is going to
(16:38):
pitch on regular rest on Sunday, so we feel good
about that too.
Speaker 10 (16:42):
So yeah, I ever thought just to maybe skip this
start and have him to start again on Wednesday, keeping
him on that kind of Wednesday schedule.
Speaker 11 (16:51):
No, because I think that it's just more of just
trying to not get too many guys, you know, with
their ample rest and pushing them back what four days
and like that is plenty.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
Well that's good.
Speaker 8 (17:04):
Another writing with okay See yesterday.
Speaker 11 (17:07):
Yeah, Alex will have one more and then the hope
is when we get home he'll be active.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Good.
Speaker 11 (17:18):
Alex was good, Tommy came out of it well. Max
is gonna play third tonight I think, and then potentially
Dach next day. So we're pretty well represented with the
Okay See team.
Speaker 10 (17:32):
How are you feeling about just the weather here with
Blake's start? Are you guys expecting an on time start
or have you heard anything that they might be keeping
an eye on.
Speaker 11 (17:40):
Yeah, we're going to meet here in about an hour
and go over kind of the forecast, but you know,
we have Blake going, they've got schemes going, so you know,
hoping right now, I understand it it's going to be
on time, but if anything, we could be pushed back
a little bit for the start time. But what we
don't want is a start stop situation.
Speaker 8 (18:01):
All right, there's the manager, Dave Roberts, and we could
happily report that there'll be no start stop. This first
pitch will happen on time Major League Baseball. The Pittsburgh
Pirates just announcing moments ago that first pitch will happen
if three point forty rain has blown through the area
there in Pittsburgh. Paul Skins, Blake Snell, What a great
pitching matchup we got coming up for you? Speaking of
(18:23):
coming up here on Wrongo, because you know, Dodgers on deck.
We will check in with the David Va say that
is up next. Don't forget your magical moment. We'll dive
deeper into this great pitching matchup coming up in about
twenty five minutes.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
Don't go anywhere.
Speaker 8 (18:35):
We lead you up to Dodgers and Pirates from P
and C Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I'm Tim Kase is
the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.
Speaker 5 (18:48):
As we were saying, yes, is Marongo Casino Dodgers on
deck on the official home of La Dodgers Baseball.
Speaker 8 (19:04):
It's the Dodgers and the Pirates on this Thursday afternoon.
Dodgers seventy eight and sixty one, two and a half
games up on the San Diego Padres, who are off
today at seventy six and sixty four. Dodgers need to
get a win after dropping the first two games at
PNC Park. A great not a good A great pitching
matchup coming up, Blake Snell, we will hear from in
(19:27):
about fifteen minutes. Paul Skins Eltoral High School. He'll be
on the mount for Pittsburgh. First pitch coming up at
three forty.
Speaker 11 (19:35):
I do.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Without a hot dog? Who wants a hot god?
Speaker 5 (19:40):
It's time for the Hawfe Magical Moment, Ditch Magical Magic
presented by Hawby Hot Dogs.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
Well, we go back to May ninth, twenty seventeen, Dodgers
taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates. That was a year in
which the Dodgers, well they were the king of walkoffs. Yes,
against the Pirates on this day in May, Austin Barnes
in the tenth inning would get it done.
Speaker 7 (20:05):
Wine driving the right center field for a base hit
that's gonna.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Split the scene, that's gonna go to the wall. Here
comes stripling and the Dodgers will win it.
Speaker 7 (20:18):
Austin Barnes with a two out double in the right
center the Dodgers with a run in the bottom of
the tenth.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Inning, walk it off.
Speaker 6 (20:28):
It's four to three, and now.
Speaker 7 (20:34):
Austin Barnes is getting pummeled out in short left field
by his delirious teammates.
Speaker 8 (20:40):
Austin Barnes the walkoff double in the tenth innan scoring
pinch runner ross stripling. Yes, as the Dodgers would come off,
the walkoff would come off future teammate Daniel Hudson against
the Pittsburgh Pirates. That was the second of what would
be ten walkoff wins for the Dodgers in the twenty
seventeen Sea And this Hoffey Magical moment brought to you
(21:02):
by Hoffey hot Dogs, Haffey so Cow's local treasure for
nearly one hundred years, Hoffey hot Dogs, Local and so great.
When we continue, we'll check in with the David Vess.
He's ready to go when we come back. Dodgers and
Pirates from Pittsburgh. I'm Tim Kates, the world champion Los
Angeles Dodgers audio name, Well, this.
Speaker 5 (21:22):
Is Morongo Casino. Dodgers Hunting game on your home for
La Dodgers Baseball.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
Dodgers and the Pirates.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
Blake Snell, Paul Skian's the pitching match, but it's a
good one. The Dodgers wrap up this three game series
at PNC Park, First pitch coming up.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
At three forty.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
Joining Tim Kates on Dodgers Huntech, I accept everybody for
who they are. This is Dodger inside there.
Speaker 8 (21:49):
David Basse and David Now joins us before the finale
of this three game set in Pittsburgh. David, the Dodgers
need to get a win, but off the field move
he bet and his podcast had an interesting interview with
mister Paul Skeins.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah, and Paul Skeens will be facing the Dodgers for
the second time this season, and uh, bad news for
the Dodgers. He was telling Mookie that he gets stronger
this year as the games go deeper.
Speaker 9 (22:18):
It's it's funny because the last few starts, I felt
better in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh than I have
in the in the first few innings.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
So what what what would that be from?
Speaker 9 (22:26):
I really don't know. We're trying to figure that out.
It could be uh, you know, body, you know, musculature obviously,
but you know cens waking up and stuff like that.
There's there's some stuff there that we're trying to figure out.
We just don't know yet. But I've noticed it at times,
like I noticed it at times last year, but I
didn't really think it was like a trend, you know,
(22:47):
in August, like I'm gonna feel terrible and like have
because everything for me is my body and my delivery
if all that's dialed in and my stuff's going to
be dialed in.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
So there you have it. Paul Skeins on the Mookie
Bets on Bays.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Podcast, Moki had a pillow on his lap trying to
hide that iPad with all his questions. But I thought
it was interesting that Paul Skeens gave a very candid
answer there, and you would automatically believe like MOOKI thought
you better get to Skeens early. Well, it's the opposite.
He only gets stronger later in the season and later
(23:23):
in games. So it'll be interesting to see how it
plays out tonight. But we've talked about Yamamoto tim not
getting a lot of run support. In fact, Yamamoto has
the least amount of run support of any pitcher in
Major League Baseball this season. Number two is Paul Skeens.
He's nine to nine with an ERA of two, getting
(23:43):
the second fewest amount of run support from the Pirates.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
It's kind of fun to see a superstar talk to
another superstar. In this one on one.
Speaker 8 (23:50):
Platform, David is brought to you by Ford. It's time
to see Ford in a new light. Speaking of new lights, well,
was he a new looking Blake Snell tonight or more
what we saw last time out?
Speaker 1 (24:01):
What do you see?
Speaker 3 (24:01):
What do you think you're going to see him more
stronger Blake Snell? I mean now he's on a regular
five day routine. If you remember a week ago, he
his wife gave bert to their second child, so he
was all in on that, and he also got sick.
He doesn't really want to make excuses, so I'm not
going to get into how sick he was, but it
(24:23):
played into his fastball being around ninety three miles an
hour when we're used to seeing it at close to
ninety six. The one thing Snell has had all season long,
even without fastball velocity in his last start, maybe not
having his slider in other starts, is his change up
and that's part of the reason why the Dodgers felt
(24:44):
comfortable sunning Snell to a five year contract, because the
Dodgers believe his changeup is his best pitch and it's
going to help him evolve over the next five years,
even as he gets older.
Speaker 8 (24:57):
I guess a million dollar question, or maybe the eighteen
million dollar question everybody wants to know, David, why is
Michael Confordo struggling so bad this year?
Speaker 4 (25:07):
Is this expected? Is this something that just kind of
started and he hasn't been able to shake. What's going
on with him?
Speaker 1 (25:13):
Well?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
I talk to some people today that know Confordo pretty well,
and they believe that he is taking on the burden
of not the contract per se, but the responsibility he
has to this team being as good as it is
to perform. And as things have not gone well, he
(25:34):
is pressed. And when you press, you don't perform. And
here's another layer to consider. This person that is close
to Conforto told me he's always been one of those
hitters at Seaball hit Ball. He doesn't want a lot
of information. Maybe the Dodgers, with all their information, have
maybe worked against Michael Conforto. Not everybody needs to have
(25:58):
all the information, and maybe not a lot of hitters
can digest all the information the Dodgers hitting coaches give
to them, so that may be compounding the fact that
he has pressed all year something to consider all.
Speaker 8 (26:11):
Right, information overload. It's a real thing. David appreciated. When
we continue here on Morongo Casino Dodgers on Deck, we
will check back in with Rick Monday. Yeah, as we
leach up to first pitch from Fitchburgh, the rain is gone,
Baseball will happen on time Dodgers and Pirates. I'm in
cases the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
This is Marongo Casino Dodgers on Deck on your home
for the Blue all season log.
Speaker 8 (26:41):
Hit some Dodgers and the Pirates on this Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
A great pitching matchup.
Speaker 8 (26:47):
Blake's now Paul Schemes Eltoro High School. First pitch from
PNC Park coming up at three forty time. Now for
the Verizon startup, as we're a little over thirty minutes
away from the start of the game. Now Verizon talking
your low price for three years so you can save big.
Visit the Verizon store today.
Speaker 5 (27:06):
And now joined by David Basse here's La Dodgers broadcaster
and World Series champion Dodger Rick Monday.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
Well, Rick, you touched on it a little bit already,
but the Dodgers have their hands full tonight facing one of,
if not the best pitcher in Major League Baseball and
Paul Skeens.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
Yeah, but let's look at the other side. Let's look
at the positive side. The Pittsburgh Pirers have to face
your buddy, Blake Snow and that's not going to be
an easy deal. So let's just go and I just
want to put you in a happy mood right off
the bat. And the Dodgers have to beat first of all,
the weatherman. There was some rain earlier today as far
as the late afternoon rain here in the Pittsburgh area,
(27:47):
but that is it's been here and it has departed,
and a big temperature change because the high did not
even reach his seventy degrees here in town. And quite frankly,
the Dodgers, them sure of their bats has been about
the same as what we've seen today. Shut out last night.
They scored seven runs in the opening game of the series,
but that was not enough, losing them with I scored
(28:09):
nine to seven and hopefully the bullpen, if needed and
win needed, can step up a little bit better than
the four games. The last four games, they've worked ten
in the third innings and allowed twelve runs to be scored.
And this is against teams, David, that you look at
that had not really been the powerhouses, that being the
Pittsburgh Pirates and that area that just closed up in
(28:31):
the last home stand against Arizona Rick.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
There's been calls for the Dodgers to take what the
pitchers are giving them, maybe even manufacture runs against the
guy like Paul Skiens.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Don't you have to have that mindset.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Yeah, here's another thing. And now this may be way
out in left field if I'm going to face ball Skiings,
and I'm kind of glad I don't have to face
either one of those starting pitchers tonight. But here's the number,
and we're going to find out if it plays large
or if it plays large at all. Because Skeenes in
the season has allowed just a one ninety eight batting
average against him. However, if we look at the first
(29:08):
pitch of it bats this year, it's a four to
thirteen average against. I have a hint be looking for
the first pitch to put it in play, don't be
taking it. If it's a good pitch that four to
thirteen average on the first pitch to hitters this year,
we'll see if it looms large tonight or if it all.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
Do you believe that's a first pitch fastball or is
it a first pitch Skiens splinker?
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Well, the splinker, And if it is, the Dodgers have
in their lineup a guy that understands it better than most.
And here's why, because Mookie Bets does a podcast, as
we know, and one of the featured guests that he
had was Paul Skeanes on the podcast, and Skeens explained
(29:51):
to Mookie and showed him how he throws the splinker,
which is a combination of the scene and the splitter,
and he says it's applying pressure with the index finger
of his pitching hand. Is the difference in this thing
that he's categorized. And I think it's brilliant that you
(30:11):
name a pitch that's out of the ordinary, because now
everybody talks about it, including us. So the one guy
that understands it and understands how it came about when
he was a pitcher at LSU. That being Schemes and
now what he does in order to make the ball move.
So I would imagine that Mookie Benz has hopefully talked
to everybody else understanding how a plane flies does not
(30:34):
necessarily mean that you can fly it, but hopefully the
Dodgers can figure out the splinker.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Yeah, we actually share part of that conversation earlier in
the show, Rick, and I was watching that part of
it as well. It's interesting that Schemes was not actually
throwing that pitch in games at LSU. The first time
he threw it was after he was drafted by the Pirates.
Speaker 6 (30:54):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Yeah, he had thought about it, but it's like most
pitches that guys have where they they work on it
and talking to other pitchers and other pitchers and and
other pictures. Not only the grip, what's the release point,
what's the pressure difference on the index finger versus the
middle finger if you're pitching hand, what's the emphasis in
coming down off the side off the top as you're
making the delivery. Most of that is discovered before games,
(31:19):
as they're just kind of playing catch if you will,
in the outfield during banting practice.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
Hey, Rick, I guess uh. In the hitters meetings.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
You would hope that there was a screenshot taken of
Skeens holding the baseball on that podcast.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Well here's a question. Have they been having hitters meetings?
Speaker 1 (31:37):
Well, hopefully today they did. They got a lot of time.
Well they need to, We need to, David Rick, We'll
leave it right there. How about that, we'll just leave
it right there.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
We're gonna sweep it under the rug. Okay, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Don't forget what today is Rick el Zilla Day. Hello?

Speaker 5 (33:05):
This is high and tight.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
We are joined right now by two times two time
Cy Young Award winner. It was great to catch up
with today's starter. Blake Snell wanted to share that conversation
with you to give you a peek inside of his
baseball IQ.
Speaker 12 (33:22):
Yeah. Thanks for having me, Dave.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
How is fatherhood again?
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Feeling after having your second child or your wife Haley
welcoming in your second child this past Monday?
Speaker 1 (33:32):
You know it was awesome?
Speaker 12 (33:34):
You forget how much for me? Like obviously love him
to death, But when there's there's so little to start,
and it's it's still like nerve wracking and scary, and
you know, you just want to do everything like the
perfect way to make sure he's good. So that's been uh,
you know, getting used to that. That part again has
(33:55):
been tough for me. But yeah, Mama is the best.
She's uh, yeah, she's the best. If I'd be lost about.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Her, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
And I'm wondering how you feel as your second child's
coming into the world.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
Are you as nervous as you were for the first one.
Speaker 12 (34:13):
Nah, I know what to expect, but that doesn't mean
I'm not, you know, nervous about how small he is
and fragile, and yeah, that's still the same.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
A lot of things people don't know about Blake's now
is how much you think next level about the game?
How much do you deconstruct every game? Because immediately after
you were talking about the sequencing to Corbyn Carroll, I
mean that's next level stuff.
Speaker 12 (34:40):
Yeah, I mean for me it's I don't know, I
think that's pretty normal. Just break down your start with
did you like, what didn't you like? What did you
think you got away with that you shouldn't do or
what what did you see that you you missed? But
it's open and it's there and you should try it
the next time you see these guys. So I know,
I just you know, you think about everything the way
you felt. You know, what were you telling yourself? There's
(35:02):
so much that goes into it, and then you know,
how do you sharpen that up for the next start?
And what is that next star going to look like?
Now I got Pittsburgh, so you know, what is that
going to look like? How am I going to feel
in those situations against these hitters? And you start like
mentally preparing as if you're in the game, and go
from there.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
How do you explain not only this last start, but
the start before, just how good your changeup spin?
Speaker 1 (35:27):
How good your curveball?
Speaker 11 (35:28):
Is?
Speaker 3 (35:28):
Starting to feel it feels in some ways that those
are the pitches that you're attacking with and the fastball
plays off of that.
Speaker 12 (35:35):
Yeah, I mean, once once I start locating the fastball more,
that's That's when I'm at my best. Right now, I've
been in between on that, but I'm finally starting to
locate down. I'm starting to locate up and in you know,
still missing, but definitely learning. And figuring out ways to
be more perfect with my location. So once I started
(35:57):
lokating the fastball, that's when my off speed will be best.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
When you watch some of these other guys on your staff,
I'm sure you've heard this before. There's competition against the
opposing team, But is there somewhat of trying to outdo
each other when you have so many great pitchers in
the same rotation, including a three times say Young winner
with an MVP and yourself a two times Say Young
Award winner. Not many teams have ever had those same
(36:23):
guys in the same rotation.
Speaker 12 (36:25):
Yeah, no, I mean I love watching him pitch. It's
just letting me know, you know, like I'm seeing what's
to come. You know, I'm thirty two, I'm in my prime.
But also watching him, talking to him, learning what he's
going through, what he went through on his way to
thirty six, and and just you know, like getting ready
(36:46):
for Okay, what do I have to do differently now
to make sure by the time thirty six I can
be the best version of me? And then also like
this year, I mean for me personally, it's been tough,
just with the injury stuff, it's been a battle.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
The whole year.
Speaker 12 (36:58):
So what do I need to do in the off
season to make sure that I'm more prepared for that
so I don't have to go through this again. So
it's just it's a big learning here for me. But
being able to be in a rotation with him, Yama Glass,
sheehan Otani, being able to watch them, how they prepare,
(37:20):
how they battle and compete. I mean it's big and
and I've always competed against the starters and staff. I've
always done it, and I've always let it be known,
and I've always wanted them to succeed and dominate because
I know it only makes me better.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
There he goes Blake'snell.
Speaker 3 (37:36):
He is on the mound for the Dodgers tonight as
they close out the series in Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
We'll send it back to you, Tim, all.
Speaker 8 (37:42):
Right, thanks a lot of DV Blakesnell, Paul Schemes. What
a great pitching matchup. We'll dive deepener the numbers when
we come back. So we lead you out the first
pitch from PNC Park. I'm Tim Katson, the world champion
Los Angeles Dodgers Audio Network.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
Casino Dodgers game on your home for LA Dodgers Baseball.
Speaker 8 (38:07):
It's Dodgers and the Pirates is a wrap up this
three game series from PNC part Dodgers going to play
with a two and a half game lead in the division.
Padres are off, so the Dodgers a chance to pick
up a half game in the NL West before they
head to Baltimore.
Speaker 4 (38:21):
For a three game series. First pitch coming up at
three forty and.
Speaker 5 (38:25):
Now before the Dodgers hit the dining we look at
the pitching matchup for.
Speaker 8 (38:29):
Is it about your Southern California Toyota dealers? Work hard,
play hard in a New Tacoma with an Ifos turbo
Charts engine.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
It's a truck built for the bowld. See your Toyota
dealer today. They make it easy.
Speaker 8 (38:39):
Well, it's never an easy day against Paul Skeins nine
to nine, two five ERA, the twenty three year old
right hander out of Otoral High School, first round pick
of the Pirates in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 4 (38:50):
Out of LSU.
Speaker 8 (38:51):
Second season the big leagues, he's already a two time
All Star. Started the All Star Game for the National
League this year, make it his twenty ninth start. Last
timeout six innings, two runs, seven hits, six punchouts in
a win over the Red Sox. Paul Skeens has already
faced the Dodgers three times in his young career. He
is two and one with a three sixty three ERA
and twenty five strikeouts in those three appearances. Blake Snell
(39:15):
goes for the Dodgers three and three, two forty one ERA,
thirty two year old left hander, making just his eighth
start this season. Remember, he's spent three months on the
injured list with the shoulder inflammation. This is his sixth
start since coming off the injured list. He has lost
back to back outings. Last time out five and a
third innings, just three runs, four hits, eight strikeouts in
(39:36):
a loss to the Diamondbacks. Had some control issues, but
also was dealing with the flu. Has pitched against the
Pirates five times in his career. He has one and
two with a six eighty six ERA and twenty six strikeouts.
He last faced them last year when he's with the
Giants May twenty second, twenty twenty four, three and a
third innings to give up four hits, four runs, four walks,
(40:00):
struck out five in a no decision.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Great pitching matchup coming up.
Speaker 8 (40:04):
Blake Snow, Paul Skimes Dodgers Pirates for fifteen minutes away
from first pitch. Keys to the game are coming up next.
I'm Tim kase Is, the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers Audio.
Speaker 5 (40:16):
Now, this is Marongo Casino Dodgers on Tap on your
home for the Blue All Season Law Law.
Speaker 8 (40:31):
It's the Dodgers and the Pirates on this Thursday afternoon.
Blake Snell Paul Skiings the pitching matchup first pitch from
P and C Park in this series finale's coming up
at three forty to back out to the booth one
final time before first pitch.
Speaker 4 (40:43):
Tim Neffett Brick Monday, guys.
Speaker 6 (40:45):
Damn, thanks again, counting you down to the first pitch
in Pittsburgh, final game of this three game sin as
the Dodgers look to salvage a game in this series
against the Pirates, who are very good at home. They're
actually eleven games over five hundred at home at forty
one And I asked Dave Roberts a short time ago,
how do you get your runs against Paul Skeens Today?
It's going to be tough, And they didn't get any
(41:06):
runs against him when he pitched against the Dodgers early
in the spring at Dodgers Stadium. He's been very tough,
especially on right handed hitters. Right he's only hitting one
eighty one against him.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
Yeah, but you know, sometimes you have to squint in
order to see the photo is very distinctly. Here's this
may be way out in left field. But for Paul Skeens,
get a pitch early in account. Here's why first pitch
of it bat's Skeens is given up before thirteen average.
Now the question is going to be do you chase
a pitch out of the strike zone trying to be aggressive.
(41:38):
Dodgers have to figure something out and for schemes. He
does not walk many, not too many hit the baseball.
So with the Dodgers understand that runs at a premium
tonight early and.
Speaker 6 (41:48):
We'll keep an eye on the velocity of the fastball
of Blake's. Now it was down to oneder ninety four
miles per hour in his last start against the Diamondbacks.
He said he's had a lot going on, and he
has with the birth of a child and all the
things go along with that. So he said he's not
worried about it and looking for that to tick up
here in Game number three tonight, Blake Snell against Paul Schemes.
That's the pitching matchup as the Pirates and Dodgers play
(42:10):
the final game of this three game set, too.
Speaker 4 (42:12):
All right, first pitch coming up.
Speaker 8 (42:13):
Don't forget there is no Will Smith in the lineup,
Still bothered by that.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
Hand that he's gonna get.
Speaker 8 (42:19):
MRI and a ct scan On Dalton rushing behind the play,
rocking the sc high Sung Kim at second base today.
Alex Freeland designated to Triple A Oklahoma City, So a
little shifting to the roster for Dave Robertson. This Dodgers
team still Otani, Betts, Freeman, te Oscar one, two, three
four atop the lineup, Michael Gonfordo batting fifth in left field,
(42:41):
Blake Snell Paul Skeins this pitching matchup.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
The rain has blown through.
Speaker 8 (42:46):
We've got baseball on time at p N Seed Park
in Pittsburgh, Dodgers looking to pick up a half game
on the San Diego Padres. Theyre going to play two
and a half games up in the division. First pitch
is next from Pittsburgh. Don't forget, Davidsay's got your cover
with all the post game including Dodger Talk as well.
