Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talker. Well,
it's a special weekend here at Dodgers Stadium. Ron Say
honored last night and obviously today, Fernando Valenzuela being honored
at Dodger Stadium and enjoined by a man that is so.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Beloved wherever he goes.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
I mean, the resume is so long, so I'm just
gonna put it with one word to describe Johnny b
Dusty Baker.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Winner.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Everywhere he went, he won, and it started here in
LA with the Dodgers in nineteen eighty one.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Dusty, thanks a.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Lot for the time, and it's always great to have
you back at Dodger Stadium.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well think it's always great to be back. And you
know something, one of the reasons I enjoyed my time
in Atlanta, thank Aaron and Ralph Ghar and all of them.
But I really wanted to win, and I was just
so happy that they sent me to LA. You know,
my childhood team, and you know, the Dodgers meant winning,
and you know, I can't stand losing. And one of

(01:00):
the best things, like I said, but one of the
best things that happened to me and my life is
sending me to La because we won, and we won
in a big way.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Hey, only a few guys could say they won a
World Series as a player and we're a manager when
they won the World Series too.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
You know something somebody else told me that, but I
don't know who else. Who else did it? Do you
happen to know who?

Speaker 1 (01:19):
One guy was sitting next to you last night, Mike Soosha?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Oh yeah, oh yeah. How can I forget that? I
won't tell him, Well, you can tell him this. He's
the guy that beat me out on one, my first one.
But that's okay.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
You know my teammates social that I had a lot of
you know, respect for. I don't know how I could
have forgotten my Sosha. But it's great weekend. It's great
to see all the guys that I played with, you know,
see Garvey and and Royce and Darryl Thomas and you
know Dave v Anderson today, you know some of the
guys that you know, Bill Russell and Penguin. Last night

(01:52):
and today it was it was heartfelt with the Fernando
unveiling man, I mean it was great man. And you
know the artist Vargas is unbelievable because I hadn't seen,
you know, too much of his art and h you know,
the guys that were here, uh, you know, really appreciated it.
His family appreciated it. I didn't know he had so

(02:14):
many grand grandchildren, all girls, and uh, you know, just
you know, it does my heart good that you know,
we're celebrating something, you know, for such a great man,
Fernando Venezuela.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
We know what he did on the mound and how
much he meant to you guys on the field, But
what was he like behind the scenes.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I heard about this last so.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
He had, well he had a last so he'd give
you a hot foot with some matches. He tap you
on the shoulder. And guys were like, oh, yeah, he's
from Mexico. He's older than he said. No, he wasn't.
He was a kid, and he acted like a kid
anytime other than when he was on the mound. When
he's on the mound, he acts like a man. But
but off the field, uh, he acted like a kid.
I mean he'd crack you up and he'd do something crazy.

(02:55):
And I remember the time I saw him doing that
hackey sack. I don't know if but the hack. He
sac man, he could keep that thing going for like
thirty minutes. And I was like, man, I mean he
could do everything but run and only thing he couldn't do.
I mean any kind any game with Hannah Ey coordination
he was. He was excellent at it. But you know,
but you know, he just couldn't run and that was

(03:17):
the only thing he could hit field, you name it.
I mean, you know, he was an athlete.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Rick Monday always tells us how protective you all were
Fernando his first year. Do you remember having that kind
of protective feeling towards.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Him, Well, certainly.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I mean he was like like, you know, like our
little brother. And you know we made sure, you know,
nobody took advantage of him. You know, made sure nobody
took advantage of him because he was just learning English,
because of his age. You know, we took care of him.
We took care of him on the field, off the field,
you know, make sure that you know, he didn't you know,

(03:51):
he wasn't old enough to go to the clubs or anything.
All the bars even you know, we sneaking of beer
two every once in a while, but you know that
was about it.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Hey, Dusty, I got agree story for you.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Speaking of the clubs, I was walking in New York
when Davey Lopes was a coach with the Dodgers. We
were on the trip together. I run into him and
he said, yeah, I'm just taking a walk. I said, yeah,
where was Studio fifty four? He knew exactly where it was.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Well, we all knew where it was.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
We all knew where Madgique was. I mean, we all
knew where all the spots were. But you know, I
mean we were a team on and off the field,
and you know, we had a you know, we had
a great time. And you know, I look at you know,
Pedro Garrell, he's walking by right now, and see he
was just a couple of years older, maybe than Fernando,
because you know, he was one of our kids coming

(04:37):
up to him. Mike Marshall, Candy Model Nado. I mean,
we had guys come with David Anderson. I mean, you
look at it, Mike Marshall, Steve Sachs.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I mean, we had a.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Bunch of young warriors coming up, Jeffrey Leonard and we
ended up having the trade half of them. But I
mean that was a mega class of young players and
they actually made us better because we were all so
that they're trying to take our jobs, and so that
made us play better by having competition for our jobs.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
That's the great voice of a great man, Dusty Baker.
All right, so you're done with baseball. You show up
wherever they need you in San Francisco or La or Houston.
So how do you get your competitive juices?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Now?

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Does the wine you have a winery? Does that get
things going for you?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Well?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Yeah, I have a winery that's work, it's also fun
at the same time. It's called Baker Family Wines out
of Sacramento. And uh, you know, I grow some raw
grapes on my property. But you know, nothing, nothing takes
the place of competition and getting your competitive juices out there.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
On the field. And you know you can.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I've tried a lot of different things, but you know,
nothing really satisfies me other than kind of watching my
son play and and you know there's nothing.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Uh you know, it's very.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Little, like I said, very little substitute for competition.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Bakerfamilywines dot Com. I would imagine, oh, you got that right.
You got to get on the list, long list, right
to get that veno from Dusty Baker.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Really I got. All you gotta do is just go
on internet. And you know, if you don't come by
the winer, we can ship it to you.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
All right, I'm gonna get mine shipped. There might be
a hole in my bottle, so I might need to
get more.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Hey, who put the hole in there?

Speaker 2 (06:20):
All right?

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Man, that's the greatest I've known since I was a
kid man. Great guy and hasn't changed the bid and
certainly a special person that everybody loves.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
So thank you. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
When I come back here and I see you now
as a man, and I think about Joe McDonald and
you were too always you know, together, you know. And
I think about the great media and press guys that
we had here, and it was a lot of fun
and everybody had the same goal in mine was to win.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
You're a winner. Thanks a lot, Dusty.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
We'll check out Baker family wines, that's for sure. Love
seeing you out here, and come back more often. I'll
pay for the flight if Steve Brenner won't, Hey, man,
Steve got enough, mury pay for it.
