Speaker 1 (00:00):
An exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talk last night,
A special night for a guy that has worked really
hard to make his major league debut. He caught the
final out of the game last night in an epic
showdown between Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer, and that is
the one and only Justin, Dean, Justin, thank you so

(00:21):
much for the time and congratulations.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
I appreciate you. It's good to be here and thank
you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
What was it like for you, even late in the
game to be able to catch the final out and
make your major league dreams come true?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, a dream, a dream that of course took a while,
but as it was, as.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
It was pulling up, it didn't feel like it took
long enough. You know. Everything happened so fast.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
When I was checking into the game and I'm seeing
I'm seeing the bright lights, I'm seeing the fans in
the stands, and it's just like, wow, this is his
game time, you know. And once I checked in, I
just wanted to do my job and get a win
with the team. So we did that, and that's all
I woul asked for for the debut as a win.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
When you were called up. Was it a surprise or
did you feel feel like it was getting closer.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
I've been I knew I was playing well and I
just wanted to keep playing well and I let the
chips fallow it where they made from that. So I
felt close. But I felt close before and and and
nothing's happened.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
So it's just it was. It definitely felt like a
shot when it did come around. So I'm still shocked
right now.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
You were a non ronster invite to spring training when
the Dodgers invited you to camp. I mean, obviously you're
trying to show out, but you see the guys around you.
Did you believe this opportunity would come with the Dodgers?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yes, and no, there's of course I saw the chance.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I saw, you know, the opportunity and what you know,
the team might have needed. And as far as my
skill set, it felt like it matched. But you know,
you never know with with with this game and this business,
it's it's a tough game, it's a tough place to
make it as far as the show, we're all this
with any team. So I was just happy for the
opportunity and as long as you have a chance to,
you know, to get on the field and showcase what
you got.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Then you got a chance to make it.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
I've heard from other players that have taken the field
at Dodgers Stadium, and you see that third deck sometimes
can get overwhelming. Did you allow yourself to take it
in or you just had to stay lazer focused in
the ninth inning?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, I was taking it in for sure, just like
you said, that other deck and it's full of fans,
it's full of white, jersey's full of blue.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
It was really cool to see it.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Just try to remind myself that it's still the same game,
that we're still playing, the same game of baseball that
we've been playing.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
It's just a lot of people watching, So it was
really cool.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Was this the dream that you always had to play
Major League Baseball or did you have interests in other sports?

Speaker 2 (02:32):
This was the dream for sure.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
It's probably I was kind of set up to play baseball.
I wasn't really the tallest for basketball, wasn't really the
biggest for football, So I kind of understood that.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
From an early age. And this is where really what
I wanted to do, really what I wanted.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
To make it in and and yesterday was everything and
more than I expected, so my mind's blown.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Justin Dean is our guest. He made his major league
debut last night in the ninth inning for the Dodgers.
I just saw you walk over from having a conversation
with Dino Ebol and Mookie Bets. Mookie one of the
greatest outfielders in baseball history. Did he give you tips
on how to navigate out there? What was Mookie trying
to tell you?

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Just just you know, trying to keep it normal for me,
and he was kind of letting me know, you know
that things are going good and just keep doing your
thing and and enjoy your day and stuff like that.
And Dino is just helping me out with you know,
our outfield stuff and and how we're gonna, you know,
approach our work and how we're gonna go about building
our day. So we're just just getting accustom and everybody's
helping me, helping me out and give me poorn us
and everything.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
It's a lot.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
How fast are things right now?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Super fast? Right now, super fast, But we're adjusting on
the fly. We work in.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Does it help that you're not starting and you have
a chance to ease into a game like last night
and ease into a game like tonight.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Uh yeah, the job is the job.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
So whether they want me to to start, whether they
want me to to come in on a whim, I'm
ready for whatever.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
H Like you said, it can be a little bit easier.
You have a couple less.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Innings on your plate, a couple less things, less things
to worry about. But when it's time to check in,
it's the most important thing in the world. So if
it all feels the same to.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Me, before I let justin, Dean go, tell us something
about yourself, what drives you, what your family like, where
you're from.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
I got a lot of faith.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
I was born born and Ray grew up in a
Christian family. I got strong family, family presence, a strong
family relationship with my mom, my dad, and my sister.
I pride myself in being a good person and trying
to help people whenever I can. I feel like that's
what life is about, is about spreading love and being
there for somebody else when you can.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Be Hey, that's beautiful. Good things happen to good people.
Congratulations on making your major league debut and enjoy every
second of it.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Absolutely I am, and every bit of it. I appreciate
you for having me there.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
He is the man Justin Dean and he'll receive a
gift card to Boulevards Steak in Sherman Oaks. Make your
reservation today you might see Justin Dean there before the
Dodgers go to Anaheim.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Thanks again, Justin, absolutely appreciate you.
