Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talk.
We're in steamy Boston at Fenway Park, and we're joined
right now by the man that is more plugged in
than any national writer out there. You read him in
the Athletic, you see him online all over the place.
Foul territory, fair territory. Wherever the territory is, you'll find
(00:23):
Ken Rosenthal.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Ken.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Thanks a lot for.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
The time, David. That is way too kind, But you're
right about the territories.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I'm on a lot of territories, including Fox, including Fox. Yes,
and in his steam, I know it's tough for you
guys in LA to deal with this kind of East
Coast humidity, but suck it up for the weekend.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Wow, Ken already coming after me as a soft West
Coast guy.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Well, I mean, hey, you talked about the humidity coming
right out of the schuet here.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Hey, Ken, you're pacing around Fenway Park here. It feels
like a lot is brewing. How are you handling as
we get closer to the trade deadline?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Not well. This time of year, it's just nonst and
it is fun.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
It's fun to see all the moves that we discussed
from months and months finally come.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
To fruition or most likely not come to fruition.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Most of the time, whatever happens is a surprise, even
though we speculate out the Yin Yang, for instance, the Yankees,
oh Ohno swars or the Yankees, Hey, they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Get a Well, they didn't get Aheno Swarz.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
They got Ryan McMahon. And it's kind of that way
the whole time. But just to see the mech machinations
of teams and how they go about it, that's it
really is interesting to me, just on a bigger level,
not just who's getting who right now, but the larger
three hundred and sixty degree, thirty thousand foot view of this.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It's always fascinating, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
In that vein the Dodgers, Andrew Friedman's on the record
is saying that he's looking for a right handed reliever.
Some believe they may need an outfeel bad or right
handed bat. Do you believe they'll be able to pull
that off?
Speaker 3 (01:55):
The Dodgers, of course they'll be able to pull it off.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
The question with them is always how badly do they
want it and what are they willing to pay for it?
And the Dodgers have been very clear going back to
the last offseason, but even before they hate overpaying for relievers.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Andrew's been very clear about that.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I don't know that they will overpay for reliever, and
I don't know that they should frankly.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Because relievers are volatile. That's one reason the Dodgers are
in the position the red right now. They're volatile. I
would expect they will get a bat too, because.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
If you look at the numbers of Tao and Confordo,
that's good enough.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
So yes, they will be looking in that market as well.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Byron Buxton at media day at the All Star Game
said he wouldn't wave as.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
No trade clause.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Do you believe if there was something in place between
the Dodgers and Twins he may reconsider.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
That is a great question.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
But if I'm the Twins and my best players said
that who signed the below market contract with me, I would.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Take what he says seriously and not even broach that.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Ken Rosenthal is our guest from Fox Sports The Athletic.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Ken.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
When you talk about Andrew Freeman not wanting to overpay
for relievers, are times different because of the way he's
spent on relievers during the off season and the window
that they have now with Otani, Freeman and Betts.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
That is a great question, David, and that's something they're
gonna have to balance because clearly they definitely are in
a situation where, yes, the next few years are very
important to them and they want to win while these
guys are still in their primes.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
At the same time, they've.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Been burned in the relief mark and you guys, I
don't need to list them all O'Neil Cruz and you're
Don Alvarez, and even Zach McKinstry, his name is come up.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
He was an All Star this year.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
So they can go the other way too and get
lesser relievers and try to make them better, which they've
done a good job of in the past in certain cases.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
So I don't know which way they're going to go.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
But the prices for guys like Classe and Jacks and Duran,
I'm not even sure their teams want to.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Trade them, Yeah, so they might be just wasting their
time talking to that.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
And then who else is there that is a really
big time reliever that's out there. Felix Bautista just went
on the injured list, so I'm not sure that the
lesser options might not be the preferred options considering everything here, price, need, obviously,
the shortness of the window, if you want to perceive
it that way, it all figures into it.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Ryan Helsley's a name that was even talked about during
the off season. Are you a believer you've seen trades
come together when the talks are going back all the
way back to December and January? Do you feel like
teams don't have to work as hard to get a
deal done around this time?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Things do change though his performance is not what it
was last year.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
It's good, it's not amazing, So.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
I could see that talk happening, of course, and that
one actually makes a little bit more sense to me
than the controllable guys who are gonna cost that arm
and a leg. Helsley is a potential free agent, but
at the same time, his performance has been volatile, and
if you're gonna give up what the Cardinals are going
to want, which is a premium guy, most likely it's
going to be something where the Dodgers are uncomfortable. Now
(05:05):
they have a great farm system, they can afford to
be uncomfortable.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
But we'll see if they're willing to do that.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Before I let you go. There is a local connection
here in Boston, Jared Durant from Long Beach State. There's
been a lot of talk about him possibly being traded.
Where would you put the percentage of that happening, whether
it's to the Dodgers, the Padres, or any other team.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
I would have put it actually higher before today. Marcelo
Mayer just went on the injured list. Meyer and he
is one of their left handed hitters. Duran is a
left handed hitter. They thought they had a surplus, now
suddenly they don't have a surplus.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
So for the right package, I would move Duran.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
It would have to be a starting pitcher plus and
probably a controllable starting pitcher. You're not trading him for
a rental because he's got three plus years of control left.
So it's a tough trade for the Red Sox to
make because he's a good player, not a great player.
Good player kind of reminds me of Johnny Damon in
some ways when Johnny Damon was really going. But at
the same time, he is a guy that they can
(06:03):
dangle and basically get what they want for him, So
that one probably goes right to the end, and it's
gonna be really interesting, all.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Right, Ken, Thanks a lot for the time. Hang in
there between now and July thirty. First, the Dodgers have
an off day in Tampa when the deadline comes through.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
David, you just stay cool this weekend. That's all I'm
worried about right now.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
I know us Softhwest Coast guys. We can't handle it
like Ken Rosenthal. Thanks a lot for the time.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Thanks David,
