Speaker 1 (00:00):
And an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talk
with eight time All Star, six time Gold Glover, MVP
and don't forget it, the one and only Mookie Bets.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Thanks a lot for the time and great to see
you again.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yes, sir, is good to be back.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Did you have that say with Draws during the All
Star break?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
I did. That's that's why the first thing I did
was come come see you.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
How was your All Star break? I'm sure it was great,
just to get some R and R.
Speaker 4 (00:30):
Yeah, you know, I'll kind of talk with my wife.
I says, this is the first time in a long
time I've gotten a break, and I'm really getting to
go home and hang out with the kids, see my parents.
So I just kind of, like you said, get a
little R and RS.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
It was a beautiful thing.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
I'm not sure if Bree heard me, but on the
radio leading up to the All Star break, I said
I had this vision for Mookie just hanging out by
the pool, you know, somebody bringing him some drinks, not
him getting up once, because you know, I felt like,
like you you needed that physical and mental break.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yeah, I wish that was the case. It was, Uh,
it was.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I went home to Nashville, so it was really hot,
so but no, it was it was good.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
I got this, like I said, Like you said, I
got to spend time with the.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Wife, with the kids and just get to do stuff
be in Nashville in the summer out. I can't even
tell you the last time I've been to Nashville in
this summertime, and I've been you know, I'm born and
raised and born and raised there, So it was really
just good to get to see some people I haven't
seen in a long time.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Did you pick up a bat while you're in Nashville
or did you only pick up a bowling ball?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
I picked up a bat every day, every day as
soon as yeah, I mean every day. I mean, I'm
not gonna stop, you know obviously, you know me, I'm
I'm not gonna I can't live with uh with what
I what I've been doing, and so I'm doing my
best is turning around. So I definitely put in the effort. Now,
it's just just a matter of showing.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
It during the game.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
You always hear in baseball you can't try to do
too much. Is that the same as trying to get
that feelback? You can't try to force it.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Yeah, I mean, I guess, but it's like if you're
not trying, then you know, it doesn't just fall on you.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
You know, it doesn't just discover itself.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
So it's one of those balance where you're balancing and
balancing acts where yeah, you don't want to work too hard,
but then you know, how do you find it? You know,
And I'm on I always an error on the end
of working too hard because at least I can go
to sleep at night knowing that I did everything I
could possibly to find it.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah, you working, you grinding every day is not the question.
But did you feel did you get the feel in Nashville?
Speaker 4 (02:33):
I don't know, man, I got a lot of feels,
even during the year earlier. So you know, we'll see
when the game starts, and you know, I have to
just accept what comes. And you know, as long as
we win, man, that's the most important thing. And if
I can help the team win, whether it's won it
back in the ninth inning or in the first.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Thing, or whatever it is, making a play, whatever it is,
you know, at this point, you.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Know, I just know you'll be remembered for wins and
not necessarily individual performances.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
So I have to just keep that mindset.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
MOOKI for the group, what is the biggest key for
you guys to be successful in the second half?
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Health?
Speaker 4 (03:09):
That's first, just staying healthy, and then after that, man,
it's it's I don't know if that there is a
certain key, just because you go through so many ebbs
and flows, and one minute you're not hitting, and so
you really need to focus on hitting, and then moment
you're not pitching, and so you just kind of flow
and really just play the game. We know how to
(03:29):
play and to make the adjustments we know we need
to make, and.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Most of all, just have fun.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Who do you lean on these days good and bad
as far as your teammates go. We know you got
the support system at home, but who really do you
lean on?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
And who leans on? Mookie bets on the Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
I don't know that anybody leans on me, just because
I kind of get in my own world and trying
to especially now, I mean it's really it's really hard.
I'm trying to really find myself, so it's hard to
really help other people with their mechanics and whatnot. I mentally,
you know, I'm always there for guys, but for me,
I talked to a lot to Freddie magge Rohas. I mean, really,
all the guys, really, all the guys just kind of
wrap their arms around me and keep me going. But
(04:08):
sometimes it takes me to do it. Sometimes I have
to lean on myself and really talk to myself in
a positive manner, and sometimes it didn't work either.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
So it's just a matter of just figuring out who you.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Want to talk to, what it is you want to
talk about, because there's many different things that this team supplies.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
With all the vets, you know, that's the beauty thing,
the beautiful thing about it.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
And so you know, I don't have anything anybody in specific,
but but the Dodgers themselves all help.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Mookie Betts.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
I still keep in touch with your guy, JD. Martinez.
He's not he's not available these days. He's too busy
free diving off the coast in Florida.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah, he's living his best life now.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Man.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
He dropped the bat and he picked up everything else.
So I'm glad he's having fun.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Did you have a chance to watch the end of
the All Star Game? What did you think about the
swing off?
Speaker 3 (04:56):
I thought it was really cool, really really cool.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
It seemed like it brought something neat different that everybody
really enjoyed. And it still brought the element of pressure.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
You know, with three swings, and I thought it was
a lot of fun. I really enjoyed watching it.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Would you buy in if that was part of a
regular season extra inning situation?
Speaker 3 (05:14):
I mean, yeah, I think that would be Uh, that
would make it fun for sure.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
You know, there's nothing about the big game of baseball,
but it would definitely make it fun and at least
going to the extra innings, we can enjoy it instead
of dread and going to the extra innings.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Hey, mothers across America, love this guy, love this smile.
Never forget how good Mookie Bets is because you are
one of the best on the planet and we look
forward to a great second half.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yes, Sarah, thank you.
