the mound for the Blue Dodgers will fly out today
North of the Border tomorrow A workout media day, answer

(01:14):
all the silly questions, and then get ready for Game one,
fiveh eight Pacific first pitch from the Rogers Center in Toronto, Canada.
I am Tim Kates, along with two times World Series Champion,
Rookie of the Year, and our favorite number three of
all time for the Dodgers, the one and only Steve Sacks.
Saxy honored now to be joined by another man from Sacramento,

(01:35):
seventeen years as a major leaguer a manager for the
Blue Jays. He was a manager for Team USA back
in the World Baseball Classic in two thousand and six.
Longtime broadcast, you hear him on the Blue Jays broadcast.

Now the one and only.

Speaker 5 (01:50):
The Great Buck Martinez joins us here on Saxon Kates

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Thanks so much for doing it. Good morning. How you doing, sir?

Speaker 6 (01:57):
I'm doing well? Howe you guys?

Speaker 5 (02:00):
Fantastic here we are leading up to Game one of
this World Series and what a ride it's been for
the Toronto Blue Jays, a seven game ALCS, George Springer's
home running the seventh INNY and how excited are people
in Toronto right now and around this Blue Jays organization?
To be back in the World Series for the first
time since ninety three.

Speaker 6 (02:21):
Yeah, it's really been that great run man. You know
ninety three is when Joe Carter at the walk off
home run off Mitch Williams and beat the Phillies. And
you know, we've had some great moments in the post
station with Jose Bautista, Edwin and cars shown and now
George Springers put himself in that category as well with
that dramatic home running Game seven.

Speaker 7 (02:42):
Hey, great to be with you, Buck, And I'll tell
you what you know.

Speaker 8 (02:46):
You talk about the starting rotation for the Dodgers the
Blue Jays, they got some great arms to it. And
I think it all starts with this young guy, this
Trey Ya Savage. I mean barely twenty two years old.
His stuff is phenomenal. The splitter never seems to get there.
This is a phenomenal pitch for him. But his other
stuff works really well too. This guy's already shown that
he is a formidable opponent. Maybe you can elaborate a

(03:09):
little bit about Trey well Sax.

Speaker 6 (03:13):
He's amazing. When he makes his start, He's probably going
to start in Game two. And when he makes that start,
he'll have more postseason starts than regular season starts. This
kid started out an a ball this year and made
the jump on the way to the big leagues. And
you're right, he's twenty two years old. He's so poised
and so humble and so in control of his emotions.

(03:35):
It's been ofughly impressive. You know, he set a record
for most strikeouts in a Blue Jays franchise debut. Then
he set a record for the most strikeouts in a
postseason debut when he struck out eleven Yankees and took
a no hitter into the sixth inning before they took
him out. But he's been pretty special. Then took me,
you know, saxually. You know, as a player, when a

(03:56):
veteran team lack the Dodgers, doesn't have any information, you know,
or experience, facing a particular picture can be a real challenge.
So I think that's worked and Estavage his favorite so far.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
What makes John Schneider such a good manager for this
Blue Jays team?

Speaker 6 (04:10):
Buck, But you know, I think he's in his third
season now. He's got so many characteristics of the great
Bobby Cox. And I played for Bobbie Cox in eighty
five and he was the best. You know, I've been
fortunate to pray for all great managers, Roddy Herzog and
Bob Lemon Jack McKeon. But Bobby Cox has had a

(04:35):
tremendous knack for communicating with his players, and he had
a very short memory. Something would happen that they would
make him upset the next days like it never happened.
And John Snyder has a lot of those characteristics too,
very very young in his managerial career. But what he
did this spring I think was really important. He emphasized fundamentals.

(04:57):
He emphasized a good contact at the play. No strikeouts.
You know, it's gone against the norm of this analytical era.
Whoever may say strikeouts aren't a bad thing, strike guns
are horrible. Nothing happens when strikedouns happen. And I think
that's right. The Blue Jays have been so good over
the year and that they just don't strike out. They
put the ball in play, and when that happens, good

(05:18):
things can happen.

Speaker 7 (05:19):
Playing agreed percent Buck.

Speaker 8 (05:23):
You know we talk everybody talks about the real bangers
on this team. When you got Guerreo up there that
can really hit the ball. Springer had a magnificent year
with thirty two home runs. But it's really that supporting cast.
To me, I think that is really good on this club.
Dalton Varshow is a guy that doesn't get talked a
lot about, but this guy can do some damage. He
had a you know hit, can hit the ball out

(05:44):
of the ballpark. He's got a good short swing from
the left side. And I really like Ernie Clement. This
guy is a tough out, he's a good defender. And
they're just loaded with guys that are good players.

Speaker 6 (05:55):
No, it is sure, actually, and I think the biggest
thing is that everyone on Team All twenty six during
the regular season the end of the postseason knows that
there's a chance they're going to have an impact in
that game on a particular day. And that's the great
thing about this team. Whether it's Miles Straw or David
Schneider or Nathan Lucas from Sack State, he's done a

(06:17):
phenomenal job for this team. And you're right, many of
the rallies for this team this year happened at the
bottom of the order. They would get on bas they
would make things happen. Another guy's Isaiah Connor plefo who's
been reacquired by the Blue Jays late in the season,
but you know, he started. I think he started the
last four postseason games. They had an impact in every

(06:37):
one of them. So it's not all about the stars,
especially this time of the year, because everybody pays attention
to the stars, and we saw Otani really had a
tough time early in the postseason. But you know, they
focused on the stars and those extra guys. They are
the ones that can come up with big, key hits
in a short series.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
Pluck Martinez our guest here on a five seventy l
A Sports You're home with the Dodgers. Game one of
the World Series is Friday night at Rogers Center. I
want to ask you about one of those superstars in
vlad Guerrero Junior against the big contract during the season.
What kind of leader? What kind of guy is he?
In this clubhouse and going to be here a long time.
We're in a Toronto Blue Jays uniform. How beloved is he?

Speaker 6 (07:19):
He is certain me in the face of the franchise.
And it was interesting after Game seven he was interviewed
on the field and he was very emotional. His dad
never got to win a worse series, and I know
that he's always wanted to lead this team to a
War Series championship. And you know, he finished up the
season really not strained the bat that well, and then

(07:42):
Boys of the Yankee Series got him really hot. I
think he was nine for seventeen in the Yankee Series
and he's ten for his last nineteen in the Championship
Series with three devils and three home runs. But he
has taken over the series. Of course, he like O'tani,
was the MVP of the champions your series. But the
thing that we all forget is it Bladdy's twenty six

(08:05):
years old. I mean he's just now starting. He really
hasn't reached his prime. He hasn't really learned everything he's
going to know about hitting. But it's going to be
a pretty special World Series to see Otani and Vladdy
Gerrera Junior go Turter two Buck.

Speaker 8 (08:21):
Do you think these the setup for these two teams?
That the Dodgers are obviously a team that is built
to slug. I see the Blue Jays. Can you know
they can hit the ball out of the park too,
There's no question about it. But a lot of this
team that you talked about the lack of strikeouts, productive outs,
the fact they play good defense, they can run, they
do all those different things. Is this more a series

(08:42):
against the futurists, that kind of a team like the Dodgers,
and maybe a throwback team that you could say more
of the Blue Jays?

Speaker 6 (08:51):
Well, I haven't, did you send that, actually, because that's
exactly what it is in my mind. And you know what,
I know, the Rumors got swept by the die just
because of their great run they had in their rotation.
But the Brewers and the Blue Jays played that of
old school baseball. Put the battle in the ball, run
the base as well, catch the ball. You know, in
the I think Game six, they turned three double plays

(09:14):
and then twice with the bases loaded. And it's just
a very good defensive team. I think at the end
of several games this year there were six gold Bubbers
on the field. And it's a very good defensive team,
very athletic team. And you're right, they don't hit a
lot of home runs, but they get on base. They

(09:35):
put pressure on the pitcher and you know, there was
an error where everybody discounted the stolen base that it
wasn't important. You're giving outs away and all the analysts
that you know, strikeouts are not a bad game. Well,
when you do strike out, and when you run the
base as well, and when you steal bases, it's a
distraction for the pitcher and you divide his attention between

(09:55):
home plate and the bases. So I think it's an
important way to play, and I think you're going to
see some of the teams trying to copy.

Speaker 8 (10:02):
Yet, Yeah, I agree with you one hundred percent, Buck,
you nailed it. And last thing for me, Buck, is
this Rogers Center is loud. It's raucous, and this place
absolutely can shake, especially when that lid as they call it,
is closed.

Speaker 7 (10:16):
It is so loud.

Speaker 8 (10:17):
They're one of the loudest places I've ever played in.
This place can make a difference, especially if they get
off to a fast start.

Speaker 6 (10:26):
You know, Seed, The interesting thing is this Toronto fan
base is remarkable, and you know, they went through ninety
two and ninety three, back to back World Series championships
fifteen and sixteen with Josh Donaldson, Jose Bakisa, Edwin and
Conas Young and now to come back here. This team
won seventy four games last year and now they've improved

(10:49):
it by thirty games. And here they are on the
eve of playing the World Series against the Dodgers. I mean,
who would have thought that. But the fan base is dramatic.
We had six million viewers watching our Game seven, and
it's just it's a national team, there's no question about it.
But everybody is engaged. And we get two of the

(11:10):
best fan bases in baseball, no question about that. The
Dodgers always have great fans support and the Boo Jays
have the same. So it's going to be a wonderful series,
and hopefully we get an extended series so we can
see the strengths of both of these clubs.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
Well, Buck, we appreciate you coming on this morning. I
don't know what it is about Sacramento. It is like
the hotbed of baseball over the years, yourself and Steve
Sacks both Sacramento guys, and we love that about you.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
We really appreciate you.

Speaker 5 (11:35):
You coming on this morning with all their traveling you're doing,
and as we get ready for Game one on Friday night,
thanks for doing this morning.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
We really appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (11:42):
Thank you, Buck.

Speaker 6 (11:43):
My pleasure. Hope to tax you a little bit later
in the series.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
Thank you there he goes the great Buck Martinez, one
of the great guys, phenomenal in baseball, super nice guys,
seventeen years as a player, a manager, and been broadcasting
probably longer than he played.

Speaker 7 (12:00):
Yeah, he's been.

Speaker 8 (12:00):
He's a great broadcaster. Everything he does he does so well.
And he's such a nice man.

Speaker 7 (12:05):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (12:06):
I wish there were more people like Buck Martinez. He's
just just one of the best.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
What is it about the water in the nine to
one six? What's going on up there?

Speaker 8 (12:15):
Well, you know, you got to you gotta look at
this is you know, we got phenomenal weather like you
guys do down in southern California. I would trade our
winters probably for your winters because like today, it's probably
gonna rain up here. You got nice weather there. But
I wouldn't trade our summers. Our summers are no humidity.
It's it's hotter than Los Angeles. So people like that
baseball flavor in the hot weather.

Speaker 7 (12:37):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (12:37):
And it's just remarkable. There's so many good athletes up
here too. You know, I could go on and on
and talk about all the players that are from here.
Lucas the number two hitter in the Blue Jays organization,
playing in the you know who's in the Actually he's
gonna be playing in the World Series.

Speaker 7 (12:53):
He's some Sack State.

Speaker 8 (12:54):
So you got you got a good kind of mix
of players from all over. But there's some there's some
really good play up here in Sacramento.

Speaker 5 (13:01):
Well, I think we're gonna be joined by another great
Sacramento legend coming up in just a couple of minutes.
Jose Mota is going to join us as well. Get
his thoughts on this World Series again. Dodgers fly out today.
They will head to Toronto tomorrow Media Day, So get
ready for all those fun questions and entertaining answers that
the Dodgers are going to have to give on media

(13:22):
Day with all the national and international media that will
be out there covering this World series. Now that it's
got real international flavor with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and of course
Rookie Sasaki, some guy named sho hey Otani who's a
global icon. And now you add the Canadian aspect to
this with the Toronto Blue Jays and six million people.

(13:42):
How about that?

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Wow?

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Six million people watching Game seven.

Speaker 8 (13:46):
This is not a city tim that the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays are a country that's back by them. Okay,
there's only one team, and this is a country that's
backing the Blue Jays. So that's why the it's such
a great viewership. Unfortunately for them, it's a huge land
mass that they can only so many people can go

(14:07):
to the game, but watching it on TV many they've
got the whole country in their pocket real quick.

Speaker 5 (14:11):
There's a documentary coming out about the death of the
Montreal Expos and talking about what happened when when wrong
in Montreal and why there's not baseball there's.

Speaker 7 (14:21):
I think it's Yupie's fault.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
We can always blame Yupie the mascot for that because
you go ahead, do you think we'll ever see baseball
again in Montreal?

Speaker 8 (14:30):
There's talk to him. It's a good question. There's talk
about that about the expansion. Next on the list, who
may it.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Be They need a stadium, and that's the whole other issue.

Speaker 8 (14:38):
I guess, yes, they need a stadium for sure, But
that's one of the things that that's talked about, is
would it be in Montreal.

Speaker 7 (14:45):
I mean they talk.

Speaker 8 (14:46):
About that, They talk about you know, Nashville, different places,
but more Win's definitely on that list.

Speaker 5 (14:52):
Yeah, I think baseball needs to expand by another two
and I think when they do, those cities you just mentioned,
I think are at the top of the Montreal in Nashville.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Yeah, gotta get teams. I mean Vegas is gonna get
one that checks a box.

Speaker 5 (15:05):
There, I'm out, it's already done. Yeah, I'm out on Portland.
But I think Nashville would be fantastic. It's the biggest
growing city in suburban area in the United States outside
of Texas in Arizona, So I think it'd be fantastic.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
We'll take a break, we'll come back.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
We hope to check in with another great Sacramento legend
and Dodger great Jose Moda is gonna join us as well.
We got a busy forty minutes coming up. It's Sacks
and Kate's in the am.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Don't go anywhere. We want you to be a part
of the show.

Speaker 5 (15:33):
Thank you for listening, taking us with you as you
make your way through southern California. We know you got
a lot of options, and we appreciate you taking us
with you on your journey.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
As we all get ready for.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
Game one of the World Series Friday night, right here
on Anti seventy ICE Sports. It's Sax and Kate's in
the am. Tim Kats, Steve Sachs with you all October
long near the Dodgers World Series run and as they
look to win back to back World Series championships. Game
one Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays is Friday night

(16:05):
at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Canada. First pitch at
five A. Blake Snell is on the mound in Game one,
and Saxy. We are now joined by one of the
great guys in baseball, two time All Star, two time
World Series champions, a player and as a manager, an
NLCS MVP, a goal Glove winner, a two times Silver

(16:26):
Slug Award winner, and a three times three time National
League Manager of the Year. Well one and only Dusty
Baker now joins us year on a FI seven e
LA Sports with Tim Kates and Steve Sacks.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
Dusty, good morning, sir, are you hey?

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Good morning Tam, and good morning homeboy. Man you up
early at home?

Speaker 7 (16:46):
I am Dusty.

Speaker 8 (16:46):
I'll tell you what thank you for coming on, Dusty, Timmy,
you go ahead first.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
Yeah, Dusty, first off these playoffs, this Dodger run. I
got to ask you about Friday Night and that performance
from show Hey Otawny and the ten strikeout, six shutout innings,
the three home runs. You've seen a lot of baseball
in your years. Where does that rank as far as
performances we've seen.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Well, I mean that that probably even ranks higher than
Reggie Jackson's home runs against US in the World Series
because Reggie wasn't pitching. I mean, that's what I think
the most awesome thing was was, you know, his arm
has come back, and how much work he's put into
you know, his legs and his arm and getting everything healthy.
I mean, if it is so difficult to switch from

(17:31):
offense to defense in this game of baseball, which people
don't understand. I always admired catchers because how can the
catchers track out with basis loaded and then then put
the right fingers down the very next inning. So you
know what he did was you know, unprecedented, you and
you may never see it again.

Speaker 8 (17:46):
Yeah, Dusty, thanks so much for coming on today. And
I look at this Toronto team dusting this young kid
that's throwing. Buck Martinez tells us that he's going to
pitch game number two. That's Trey you Savage. This guy's
got remarkable stuff. He's so young, he's he's going on
there on a lot of sheer exuberance, but he also
can pitch very very well. That splitter never seems to

(18:09):
get to the plate. A great difference between his fastball
and that splitter.

Speaker 7 (18:13):
So I think the Dodgers are going to have their
hands full with this guy.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Well maybe, And you know something, when the problem comes
sacks as you know, you know, when you haven't seen
a guy, I mean, you can watch all the video
that you want to, but until you actually see him
in person, the nod goes to the you know, to
the pitcher. So I definitely agree with you. You know,
Dog's gonna have their handsful. But you know, that's a
veteran lineup. I'm sure they're studying fam on him to

(18:39):
try to pick up something. You know, all they have
to do is pick up fastball and something else. And
that something else could be a split fair, could be
a slider or whatever it is. And I'm sure those
veteran hitters over there are doing a lot of studying,
but the main thing that they're doing is concentrating on
game one. And you know that's where that's where their
concentration should be and then you get the game too.

(19:01):
I mean, whenever you get there.

Speaker 5 (19:03):
Dusty Baker Dodger, great baseball, great joining us here on
FI seventy e LA Sports. You manage a lot of teams.
The Washington Nationals, you had a right hander by the
name of Max schurz Or who we're going to see
in this World Series at the age of forty one
years old. We saw what he what he did in
this postseason already. Brian Snyder came out, tried to take
him out of a game, tried to talk to him,

(19:23):
and he stared him down and he told him to
go back to the dugout. He wanted to finish his outing.
Talk a little bit about Max in that persona and
that fire in that belly and having to go out
Dusty as a manager yourself and try to take that
ball from him when you when you managed.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Him, well, you know, that's the kind of player that
you want. I mean, you know, there have been a players,
a couple of pitchers that I had. You know, I
went out to talk to him and they gave me
the ball and I gave it back to him. And
so I'm serious, and I'm like hey, I'm not coming
to take you out. And Max, you know, he's the
kind of guy that you know, never wants to come out,
but at some point in time, you know, he has

(19:59):
to come out, and you have to acquiesce to what
the manager wants, even though it's it's not a very
easy situation. I remember one time I went out to
get Max, just to talk to him, and so I said, hey, man,
you know you got enough. He goes, oh, yeah, I
got enough. Skip And I said, okay, look at me
in the eye and they and he looks at me

(20:19):
like I tell all my pictures to do so I
can see, you know, if you're conning me, or if
you got enough, or or or if you're scared to
death like I've seen some some pictures are. And he
told them. And I said, okay, which eye am I
to look at? Because he has one brown eye and
one blue eye? And so I said, well, which eye
am I supposed to look at? He goes, look at
the brown eyes. I looked at the brown eye, and

(20:41):
I walked off the mount and I said okay, and
he got out of the inning. So you know, Max's
Max's uh, you know, he's one of the kind and
you know he's he's a guy that's you know, destined
for the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 7 (20:53):
Hey, Tim, I got to ask you, where are you
going to get a story like this?

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Nowhere else?

Speaker 7 (20:57):
Can't get it anywhere else?

Speaker 2 (20:58):
Right, Well, it's the truth. I came make it up either,
you know.

Speaker 8 (21:01):
You know, hey, Dusty, this this team for toronto's a
little bit of a throwback. I mean, they don't strike out,
They got good supporting cast guys like Varshow and Ernie
Clement is really a good defender and a good player.

Speaker 7 (21:13):
Is this you know? I asked the guy before. Do
you think this is.

Speaker 8 (21:16):
Gonna be kind of an old school The Dodgers like
to mash and against the team that's really fundamentally sound
and just.

Speaker 7 (21:21):
Puts the ball in play.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
It all depends on the pitching, you know. I mean,
if they can match up with the Dodgers and pitching wise,
because you know the Dodgers, you know, they got healthy
at the right period of time and got all their
pitching back, and uh, you know, not only can they
beat you ten to nine, they can beat you one
and nothing. And you know that's the big, big thing.
You know, when we play Saxy everybody talks about our

(21:45):
hitting and talk to our speed defense, but hey, it
starts with the pitching. And and the better your pitching
is uh uh, And especially if they can go deep
in the game, because you know a lot of people
have them aligned the Dodgers, you know, bullpen, and so
as deep as there going in the games, that's gonna
make it a lot easier on your bullpen. It's gonna
make it a lot easier for those guys to you know,

(22:06):
to come out of the bullpen strong. But I don't know,
you know, I think a lot would have to do
with if they can get you know, their starting short
stopped back and I don't know if they can get
him back in time for him to be you know, himself,
and so you know, that's the most amazing thing I
think if they've marched on, you know, without out without

(22:29):
the schet. Yeah, yeah, he was a key man in
there in their lineup. But hey man, they have missed
a beat Dusty.

Speaker 5 (22:35):
Final thing for me, and we appreciate you coming on
this whole narrative that the last week or so the
Dodgers are ruining baseball, and Dave Roberts joked on the
podium when they won the NLCS on Friday night and said, hey,
four more wins to continue to ruin baseball and set
it sarcastically. Are the Dodgers ruining baseball?

Speaker 7 (22:54):
Where is it?

Speaker 5 (22:54):
Why do people want to sit here and say and
point the finger just at the Dodgers for being good?

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Well, you know, I don't. I don't think they're ruining baseball.
You know, I mean they have, you know, skirted around
some of the rules as far as spending behay, if
you got it. You know, how do you tell a
rich guy not spend his money?

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Right?

Speaker 2 (23:12):
And you know, they were saying the same thing we're
playing about, not about us, but they were saying the
same thing about the Yankees. And you know, it's a
situation where where you can't if you can't control yourselves
in your own ranks, and you can't blame anybody else.
So you know, the whole thing is, I think I

(23:32):
just enjoyed the World Series. You know, cut the nonsense
and let them worry about you know, if the Dodgers
are ruining baseball after this series is.

Speaker 8 (23:42):
Over, Yeah, Dusty, the Dodgers last one for me. The
Dodgers bullpen started to come back a little bit. I mean,
this was kind of a sore spot for the team.
They were thankful that they had the starting pitchers to
kind of carry the mail. But that bullpen's coming back
a little bit now. Trining has been a little bit better.
Uh you know, of course he got Sasaki down there
to close it out. Do you think this is going

(24:04):
to be a plus for this team or is it
still kind of questionable?

Speaker 5 (24:08):
No?

Speaker 2 (24:08):
I think it's a plus, you know, because these guys,
you know, they might have been overpitched early in the year.
You know, they were only getting four and a third
or five and a third innings. And uh, you know,
anytime you got to go to your bullpen every day, uh,
and you're and you're matching up guys, not for the matchup.
You're matching up on who the health is and who's
the uh, you know, the most rested. And you know

(24:31):
that's a formula for failure, you know when you start
doing that. But but you need some guys in there,
some some guys that take you seven to eight innings
to give you a bullpen a breather, because see, with
everybody going five and a third or or or or six,
well somebody has to cover that three to four innings
every day, and you know it makes it difficult, but

(24:53):
but you know, you get a couple of horses. Man.
I remember when I had Verlander at the end in Houston.
You know, I could go full bull pen before he pitched,
the day before he pitched, and I go full bullpen, uh,
you know, the day after he pitched, because I know
that he was going to give me seven eight innings.
And anytime you can have that, you know, that's gonna
make your bullpen stronger and go make your bullpen fresher

(25:13):
and therefore, uh you know, probably pitch better.

Speaker 5 (25:16):
Dusty, who do you like in this seven game series
between the Dodgers and Blue Jays?

Speaker 2 (25:20):
Hey, man, I know you're gonna ask me, man, I mean,
you know, my heart's with the Dodgers. Yeah, uh but
uh uh uh. You know my main man that took
care of me from the day I started, uh in baseball,
Sito Gassing. You know. I talked to him the other
day and he's a guy that, uh, you know, was
the first manager to win up there in Toronto. So, hey, man,

(25:42):
I just want a good game, Okay, So I'm not
being politically correct. I want a good I want a
good series, so I don't have to go out and
clean the garage, you know in the third or fourth inning,
and you know, I want something to go to keep
me there in my chair, except to go get something
to eat or go to the bathroom.

Speaker 5 (25:59):
There you go, there you go, the great Dusty Baker.
We really appreciate some time this morning, Dusty. Save travels
and thanks for doing it.

Speaker 8 (26:06):
Thanks Dusty, Thanks see buddy, see you back here.

Speaker 5 (26:10):
There he goes, a great Dusty Baker, one of a
cond And is he the best or what? You're spoiled
getting to hang around him as much as you do
and hearing these baseball tales. We just got a little
bit of a snippet right there from him.

Speaker 7 (26:22):
Do I do I have? Do I have thirty seconds here?

Speaker 4 (26:25):
Yes?

Speaker 7 (26:25):
Absolutely?

Speaker 8 (26:26):
I'll tell you what kind of guy? How good Dusty is?
I had the I had the broadcasters over here two
different times this year from from the athletics. You know,
they come all come over my house and we have
a nice cookout and we eat some good food. Family
comes over, we have you know, it's a full house.
There's a lot of people here. Both times Dusty come
over and first time he just came over just by chance,

(26:48):
and it was like five minutes before all the broadcasters
came over, and we made it like a little mini tradition.
The next time, Dusty's got to be here, so he
came over the second time too, and he just held
court and I'm till any of these broadcasters are sitting
here with their jaw open listening to these stories the
Dusty imparts with these guys, and it was absolutely phenomenal

(27:12):
listening to this guy. Because Dusty's going to Hall of Fame,
there's no.

Speaker 7 (27:15):
Question about it, no doubt.

Speaker 8 (27:17):
And he's telling these stories like he just did with
Max right there. Well, which guy do I look at
the brown one or the blue one? Where are you
going to get these stories other than somebody like him
who's seen more baseball from both sides as a player
and as a great manager. Everywhere he goes he makes
it better. What a coincidence, And it's just phenomenal to

(27:38):
hear the stories, and the broadcasters couldn't thank thank us
enough for him being here and just telling his stories
are just out of this world.

Speaker 7 (27:48):
That was awesome.

Speaker 5 (27:49):
Great to get Dusty Baker on the show, and we
pivoting out to Jose Mota Dodger, great broadcaster and also
spend some time with the Angels. And it was around
Vladimir Guerrero Junior as a young man. And here we
are years later, vlad GERR. Junior in the World Series
as the Dodgers get ready to head up to Toronto
for Game one of this World Series on Friday night,
O wasay, good morning, how you doing.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
Good morning, guys, great to be on with you. Guys.
Talk about Dusty, talk about Dusty, Saxy and Tim Well
just going mind Dusty of the Angels. Okay, because you
mentioned the Angels.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
Yes, he will like that, that's true.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
No, no, very that visit to the mound man was like,
oh what did I But anyways, No, you guys are
right about Dusty Man. I got to pay my respects
for him. You guys were talking about him. You talk
about sex. Season know very well. Growing up in that clubhouse,
all these guys getting ready for a game, holding court
and no limits for us as kids. By the way,

(28:49):
it was like we had a long row of clubhouse falls,
the suns. I mean that's the environment, the culture they had,
and it's all connected to this. As we talk abut
a lot of junr and the kids in the clubhouse.
Does it takes the same culture, let him wherever he goes.

Speaker 7 (29:06):
Yes.

Speaker 4 (29:06):
And one time I gol, Dusty, you know your son
is a bat boy, he's a little kid. Why exactly
he goes? I learned that from the Dodgers. I know
that having you guys around his kids in the clubhouse,
it actually made us laugh and kipt us lose, And
not that we had anything to do with it, but
you know what, it was a fun culture and Dusty
took that all the way around. And it's kind of

(29:27):
coming back again because during a time in which insurance
came around and Da da da and kids on the
field and players and matters are bringing that back is
so welcoming. That's why you see a Ladi Guerrero Jr.
Who broke it stretching with his dad in the alfield
of Montreal and Luke when he's become Yeah.

Speaker 5 (29:43):
And you were around him at a very young age
as he was an angel with his dad there and
he was in the clubhouse and a round and you've
seen him mature into what he is now in this
superstar did you see and kind of figure he'd be
living through his dad in a baseball career from a
young age. Could you those traits even as a young
kid running around the Angel clubhouse?

Speaker 4 (30:04):
No, not at all. What I did see was a
kid that loved the game. He carried around his father's
thirty five inch thirty four ALM's bat around when he
was six seven years old like nothing. He spent time
in the cage after everybody was done hating in the cage.
All the regular players and guys went up after BP upstairs,
he'd be in that cage hitting off the tee with

(30:25):
a not with a small bat. Now he wanted to
use the big bats. He was always very sick, you know,
very sick kid, and just shows so much love for
the game. But I mean, I can't. I never envisioned
him being better than his father because one of the
things that came into it came to question that originally
was his body shape. And I know there's some teams
that actually expressed to me as an amateur, like I

(30:47):
don't know that we're going to be able to spend
a lot of money on this guy because look at
the body ship. I'm like, have you seen this guy hit?
Did you ever look at babe Ruth huh. I'm like,
wait a minute again, no comparisons here. You're saying, don't
get so cut up and ignoring the athleticism and knowledge
of the game because somebody doesn't look like the standards

(31:09):
six' four, guy who's going to be drafting for one
if he wars two? Thirty, no, no, no, no how
about Alijnder, kirk now.

Speaker 7 (31:14):
That we talk about, that, yep, yeah how about look
at that?

Speaker 4 (31:17):
Body what a player he. Is but, Anyways, no the
body THAT i saw was a kid that then signed
for a ton of money as a free agent back
to The dominican and he still lived the life of
some of this sign for two or three thousand dollars
in The, dominican he lived in the dorms with his.
Friends when he's Playing montygue. Baseball he was a target
because of The monday that he, got but he never stopped.

(31:39):
Working and one thing that his father did back in
the d r after you actually pull it out of,
school say you know, what you're gonna be a. Ballplayer
let's just concentrate on. THIS i want you up the. Streets,
no you're not going to get a. Car you're not
going to get a fancy this fancy that or change or. Goal, No,
no you're gonna live in my house and you're gonna
just understand the discipline it takes to become. Good And

(32:01):
Roddy senior did, SAY i want you to be better
than it BECAUSE i think you have way more. Abilities
you grew up in the, environment he got used to
a life of a big. Leaguer you know what it.
Takes and he just took it up nd swing as
a father and, say you know, what you can live
with me who can trend every single? Day and look what.
Happened that's who he is right.

Speaker 3 (32:20):
Now, wow it's.

Speaker 8 (32:21):
Amazing and And, jose just as a quick, ONE i
want to ask you a question, Too but how About
Prince fielder and his. Daddy they were pretty you, know pretty.
Thick they could hit.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
The ball a long way.

Speaker 4 (32:32):
Exactly. Yeah so, yeah it's a message from all of
us act you, know very Will tim that you know
we have painted such a standard with what a baseball
player should look like and the pitcher should look. Like
let's let these kids just show who they are by
who they, are, right just understand and, teaching don't write
a kid. OFF i, Mean Jose, altuve it for crown out.

(32:54):
Loud come, on cheating or, not this guy is a
fantastic ballplayer who got written up every team. Himself so,
yes let's promote a little bit more that not. Everybody
it's gonna look Like otani or My trout Or Aaron.
Judge these kids need confidence to understand that whatever they,
have if they have love for the. Game and never
put in limits on any of these, kids no matter

(33:16):
how they.

Speaker 8 (33:16):
LOOK i agree with that one hundred. Percent, HEY i
wanted to ask you. Quickly they both teams spend a
lot of. MONEY i, say so, what you know that
means a little bit maybe to get maybe to buy some,
Talent but so. What they got to go out there
and play and do all the right things to. Win
but teams are kind of different. NOW i, mean they
can both hit some home. RUNS i get That dodgers
have a big edge in that, Department but The dodgers

(33:39):
are a slug.

Speaker 7 (33:39):
Team the other team's.

Speaker 8 (33:40):
Not the other team plays, fundamentally they move the runner,
over they have productive, outs they don't strike. OUT i,
mean where do you see this kind of shaping up
this whole?

Speaker 4 (33:48):
Series here's WHERE i see. It, OKAY i think the
gradually With dodgers have gone from The cincinnati rights to
The phillies to The. Brewers, right each team different, offense,
Right but with The, brewers the challenge was they put
the ball in, play they're gonna. Run what do you?
Do you neutralize that by taking care of the first guy? Batting,
okay leadoff guy off the basis you utilize.

Speaker 6 (34:09):
Him.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Okay the other thing, is now you see more detail
information about The Blue. Jess for, example they let all
the base one batting average collectively and it does. Matter
batting averages, Matter, okay on base percentage three thirty, three
that's at the. Top so they swing the. Bat here's
another thing, Too even though they you, know dot yous
lug what four for forty one is a? Team, well

(34:31):
they sug four to twenty. Seven that's not a whole
lot of difference there if you think about, that. Right
but here's another. One The Blue jests are not into
this deep at bats. Thing they want to go out
there and swing the. Bats and if you see the
ches per platter, pins they want to go out there
and just find one thing early and, swing not work,
counts not pass the. Baton they will do that if
they need. To but they're looking to crush and they

(34:54):
absolutely they crush saxy non fast. PULSE i mean they
sit on, stuff they don't miss. It so the dollars
advantage is, this The valuers have every single. Starter they
can blow you over the fastball and spot it. Well
but also they have every single starter has very good secondary.
Stuff so to, me that is a match in WHICH

(35:15):
ecp approach how they're facing, you how they're taking, pitches
and you, go, okay let's go to a command number
two and PLAN b BECAUSE i see the approssure. Now
but the other thing to the, bligest because they put
ball and play so, much they head into a lot
of double. Play so you gotta defend well and understand
that they're not going to steal a lot of, basis
but may you got to be on your. Toes but
everything and especially when they put the ball and play early.

(35:35):
Accounts it's gonna be a.

Speaker 5 (35:37):

All i'll be there for. Sure the fact that he's
done managing, now it's just gonna be a matter of,
time you, know the waiting window they have TO i don't,
know five. Years is that even for a manager to?
Question i'm not, sure not, sure but but he's definitely going.

Speaker 3 (38:04):
In oh he has to.

Speaker 7 (38:05):

he's over my, house he's over my brother's. House he's my, Sisters,
No dusty and Real well and my dad And dusty's
dad were good. Friends so, yeah it's like a family does.

Speaker 3 (38:25):
Better player or better? Manager doesn't you know?

Speaker 8 (38:28):
What you could split it as far As i'm, concerned he,
was you, know he's an all. Star he was an
all star. Player who's goal, glover silver. SLUGGER i mean
he was part of that force and the hit thirty
home runs that one. Year dusty did it on his last,
DAY i, think his last the bat of the season
to pull it.

Speaker 7 (38:43):
Out but you, KNOW i think you.

Speaker 8 (38:45):
SPLIT i, mean he was at the top of his
game as a, player and you, know he certainly did
it as a.

Speaker 5 (38:49):
MANAGER i mean not only did he do it as a,
manager he did it in five different. Spots The giants World,
series The cubs didn't he go to almost came into
A World, series And red's got them relevant. Again The
Washington nationals got them back on top two years. Later
they won A World series in twenty nineteen when he was.

Speaker 3 (39:07):
