Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now an exclusive interview with David Bassey for Dodger Talk.
We're at Fenway Park, the Dodgers getting ready for the
finale of the three game series, and I'm joined right
now by Dodger All Star catcher Will Smith.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
One of those days off.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Thanks for the time, Will, I know you're thrilled to
be here with me.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, very thrilled. Thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, hey, Will, you've obviously caught the first two games.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
You've been here before.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Have you ever gone inside the Green Monster to sign
the inside of the wall.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
Yeah, I think when the last time, and then came
here when I was playing, you know, in the Cape
Cod Baseball League. They did like a workout here, got
to see the Monster and stuff. So yeah, I been
here a couple of times.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Do you feel the nostalgia of this stadium. I know
you play at Dodger Stadium, but this is one of
the oldest ballparks in Major League Baseball.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, yeah, for sure. I grew up a Red Sox fan.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Actually have some family up in this area and stuff,
so I grew up watching.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
The Red Sox.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
So yeah, to me, you know, Fenway is just you know,
one of those to pariks up there with you know,
it's Wrigley and Finway. He's two oldest parks. So it's
really cool to play here. You know, great crowds, it's
fun to play at. So yeah, coming here once a
year is really cool.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
As a fan, it's great.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
But as a hitter, do you like hitting in this ballpark?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
I mean yeah, but I've had a couple of extra
base hits taken away the first two days, so I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
I'm a little mixed feelings right now.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Hey, well, we always think about the outfielders and how
to play the green Monster and just the weird outfield here.
Like you mentioned, there are extra base hits that you've
been limited to singles.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
How do you play it as a runner?

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah, you just gotta trust your eyes. You know.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
It's I've obviously messed it up yesterday.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I tried to get the seconds out by a little bit,
but I wasn't gonna bring that up will. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
No, you just trust your eyes. You know, when you're
when you're on the bases, you know you see a
fly ball to left and you know usually you're waiting
for the guy to probably catch it. You just gotta
trust your eyes. And you know, just keep running. That's
probably gonna take it. You know, get off the wall
or whatever. You know, trust the base coaches. But yeah,
it's different. But uh, you know it's it's not it's
not too big of a thing to worry about.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
You hear hitters say that you can't try to hit
it over the green monster. Can it be dangerous to
try to see that thing there and how close it
is to you?

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Yeah, possibly, you know it's you know, that's that's just
really your approach coming against pictures, trying to pull the
ball or not if it's good or not. So yeah,
just make sure you're sticking to your approach is probably
more important.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Is today what Dave Roberts call a spa day. Do
you just completely realize you're not going to be used
even as a pinch hitter, or.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Do you have to be a little bit engaged.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
No, I'm always always ready to go.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Uh you know, I you know, get a pretty good
sense of how the game's going the first couple winnings.
You know, I'm always hoping we get out to a
big lead, ten nothing or something, so I can kind
of shut it down and just enjoy the day. But uh, Yeah, no,
I'm always ready to go.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Where was there a part of you that wished you
were playing today with Walker Bueler on the mound?

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, for sure. That had been fun to face him. Uh,
you know, get a couple of hits and you know,
hold that over him.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Was it strange seeing him and what was it like
being part of presenting him.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
With the ring?

Speaker 4 (03:07):
Yeah, it's cool. It was cool give him the ring
or the first day we got here. You know, it
brings back all the good memories. You know, he got
the last out, so you know, you remember all that stuff.
But yeah, it was just good to see him. Yeah,
looking forward to facing her day and you know, talking
some crap from the bench.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Yeah, I like that. I like that.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Your manager Dave Roberts said, you guys tried to get
him to throw his curveball more so, he said, I
bet he's gonna try to throw his curve more today
to show you that he's throwing it.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Well, that's good if you said that, he's tipping his hands,
so we'll see.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
All right, Thanks a lot for the time. I appreciate it,
and you deserve this.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Well. Rest to day.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Sunday's a day of rest, will Yeah, thank you. There
he goes will Smith
