Speaker 5 (00:43):
Matt Smith and myself as always have always been loyal
sons of Garvy. There's no if ins or butts about it.
We are Steve Garvey acolytes. We support Steve Garvey in
all his endeavors, including the Hall of Fame for baseball.
He's one of our favorite, if not favorite Dodgers of
(01:05):
all time. The forearms, the football acumen from Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
He's here right now.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
He took OJ to the ground maybe an eight yard game.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Fourteen four times, four times, four times.
Speaker 5 (01:20):
The great Steve Garvey, Dodger champion and All Star and
superb human being.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
He has the family down here.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
It's a beautiful thing to see joining us on your
Southern California toyo to either celebrity microphone on AMPI seventy
LA Sports.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
What's crack? And Garb, how are you?
Speaker 6 (01:37):
I'd say you that's the best five thousand I've ever
spent for an introduction right there.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
The invoice you later, I didn't know, Garb. It's a
beautiful thing to see you guys. It's wonderful you've done
this for so long. I mean, I remember us sitting
here eating King's Hawaiians, you know, with our fingers, our
fingers all sticky out here with our big desk, and
you know, so many things have changed, not changed kind
(02:01):
of over the years. Could you ever imagine the Dodgers
could get any bigger, you know what I mean, like,
get any bigger and more more globally relevant than they
are right now.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
Well, and it's interesting we always saw to the Dodgers
and Yankees, said, the two most famous global brands, and
then all of a sudden you start to get emerging
markets like Japan and Korea, other countries that start to
play quality ball.
Speaker 7 (02:25):
I think the World Baseball class that help do that.
Speaker 6 (02:28):
And now you get arguably the greatest star in the
game to play for your team. And I never thought
he wouldn't be on the Pacific Rim, right, You and
I know that, And it wasn't going to be Seattle,
and it wasn't going to be Seattle, right, And then
you had Yamavoto and Suzaki and Kim and players like that,
and you become truly a global brand.
Speaker 7 (02:49):
It's one step beyond.
Speaker 6 (02:51):
And you know with media now in the cloud, how
you can reach people the different platforms.
Speaker 7 (02:56):
I think it's great for the game.
Speaker 6 (02:57):
You know, people always say baseball is in third behind
football and basketball. It really is the one true sport
that separated itself at our national pastime.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Well it's second now, ahead of the NBA, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
The we you know, we know you for your exploits
when the moment called for it, perhaps no greater clutch
performer in the history of this game than you.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Where does opening day fit into that for you?
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Like, what do you remember about all those opening days
you play and kind of what went into that particular performance.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
Well, I think you guys know me very very well. Yeah,
my sons, and that I as an only child, I
was very pragmatic and very disciplined and thoughtful in how
I approached things.
Speaker 7 (03:37):
They had great parents who taught me that.
Speaker 6 (03:39):
So by the time I got to the major leagues,
I knew a lot about myself. I knew why I
played this game because this entertainment, entertainment fans. You know,
I grew up with my idols, the Hodges and the
Pros and the Ciders and Jackie Robinson as a bad boy.
So when you go over with your idols, you learn
what the game is all about, on and off the
(04:00):
So by the time I got here, I had a
good understanding of what I could do. The harder I work,
the better I got, the more we succeeded, the better
entertained the fans were, and the more memories that were created.
Speaker 7 (04:11):
And I think that's the most important thing.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
If you were to say, tell me what you take
the most pride in is tall right handed pictures. Is
the memories we've created that are indelible. Sle greatest currency
we have in life is memories.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
I want and only Steve Garvey a hero to us all.
What are you doing out here today, Garb. You're not
going behind the grill at King's of Waian, are you?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
No?
Speaker 6 (04:37):
It was bring your daddy to work today. Olivia Garvey
here at KMBC. Brought me onto the field for an
interview at eleven o'clock, and you know we were talking
about her first opening day was when she was five
and I spent seven innings chasing her around the steam.
Speaker 7 (04:55):
But that was her baptism. And now for her to
come home.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
You know, she was at NBC, Palm Spring and ABC
and Washingt d C and now here.
Speaker 7 (05:04):
It's just great for her. The Garby family in la
is falling in love with her because she knows what.
Speaker 6 (05:08):
She's talking about. It's doing a great job and she
may be the best hitter in the family. Would you
know saying so dad never had a launch angle? You know,
it was hit down to the analyte leve me a
Garvey has a launch angle.
Speaker 7 (05:21):
So that knitting a golf club.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
What do you make of Matt's outfit today, Steve? What
do you think I mean?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
He looked He's pretty. I was told the layer up
that it was going to be cold down. He's got
two hoods on.
Speaker 6 (05:32):
Oh, you're you're layered up, all right. I got a
complect that comes to mind.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yes, that's a euphemism.
Speaker 6 (05:39):
Taking a blank palette and throwing absolutely everything.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, yeah, there you go in the dark.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
In the dark, by the way, and I think you
may have a Steve Garby charity event for a miss
shirt on from nineteen cents.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
You know, run me is like the great comedian used
to say.
Speaker 6 (05:57):
He said, if is a day I go in my
close and the can't turn the light side, I know
I'm coming out with a Steve Garvey.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Shirt or hat or one of those things.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, one of the that's you know what I just
I took the patch off and now I can wear
it every day.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
But you know that's one of the things swing for
MS what you right?
Speaker 7 (06:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (06:14):
In als and the and the charities, I got a
chance to work with great article the other day about
Freddy Freeman and Kirk Gibson and the bond they have now.
But Freddy is somebody I admire because he's got it
a lot of guys do, and he's transferred what he's
done on the field to helping thousands of people and
(06:34):
millions of people. And that's when you do you understand
why God puts you on this field to play for
the fans and to help people.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Now, speaking of Kirk Gibson, look across the field, see
that Tiger cat. It's kind of odd to see it
at Dodger Stadium. But take us back to eighty four.
You have that incredible run through the National League playoffs, right,
and then you run into that buzz saw. How good
was that Tiger team? And well, I think that's fair.
I don't yeah there that we.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
Were really and this could have been the best interview
we've ever done.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
It was a heck of an NLCS or the NLCS MVP.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
You were incredible that year.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
And Dick William goes to the mound and tries to
talk Gossage out of pitching to him, and Guysage won't
leave the mound, and I'm.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Thinking, well that's goose.
Speaker 7 (07:22):
Yeah, and everything settles down, he gets.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
A sign winds up and that's sitting in the upper
deck and that was.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
How small was that stadium? That Tiger Stadium was tiny?
Speaker 6 (07:32):
Really, it was a throwback to the twenties. You know,
the out the outfield, the facing of the second deck
out they were straight down and I don't know if
you remember nineteen seventy one All Star Game, Reggie Jackson
hit the hit the Tower, which probably was about four forty,
you know, but it was that that close then.
Speaker 7 (07:51):
But I love to play in these old state rights.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Right, this is an old stadium.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
But they've done a good job on renovating the clubhouse
and stuff.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Will talk about it. But before we say goodbyey of
Garb just really.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Alive and well, yeah it still it's not dead, Barnes,
It's not dead yet, Barre.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
We are on the air. Barnes. You didn't stop us
break it down. We'll build it back up.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Pirate radio, he told us radio was dying.
Speaker 6 (08:18):
Did you imagine that the back the boats eight miles
out from the.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Talk about podcasts? Oh my, look what anything? I'm just
a seventy six year old stumbling around, Garb.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Do you like this team has more anticipation than any
team in the history of baseball? And maybe, I mean
everybody everybody's got money on the Dodgers. Everybody feels like
they're going to dominate. Is there a bad side to
that or what do you expect?
Speaker 3 (08:45):
You know?
Speaker 5 (08:46):
Because if they lose a couple straight, we're gonna hit
the panic button on the radio.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
We're gonna start freaking out. Well the chicken little The most.
Speaker 6 (08:53):
Difficult things to overcome is the curse of potential and expectation.
Speaker 7 (09:00):
Be caref and what happens when.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
A team wins the World Championship, They invariably don't become
what you saw the year before until June.
Speaker 7 (09:08):
And of course this is a little different situation.
Speaker 6 (09:10):
Googleheim invests in the team seems like on a daily basis,
which if you want to win, you do that.
Speaker 7 (09:17):
But let's just health is the most.
Speaker 6 (09:19):
Important thing, right If you lose a couple of key guys,
it's gonna be tough. Everybody's waiting for you now every game,
the opposition has their top three pitchers lined up when
you come into town. So used to happen with us
all the time, and we thrived on it because you know,
if you don't set your goal as repeating and don't say,
(09:40):
oh well, it's going to be difficult, then that expectation
could be lowered. You don't want that to happen, and
I don't think it will. It's that kind of team.
You're a hero to us. Dan, God bless you and
your family. Enjoy the day.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Enjoy it.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
The sons of Garvey signing off with the great Steve Garby.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
You're still in the will, thank god. Well we didn't
make much check every day.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
It's the longer you live, you know, it's draining out.
You keep going all these Atlantic vacations.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
I've got five rookie cards put away in a volve

Speaker 4 (10:12):
That's right to keep the up signing deposit by.
Speaker 7 (10:15):

Speaker 6 (10:21):

coins that are are gone fast.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
I hope it's signed and it says h O F
twenty six that's what it better say.
Speaker 6 (10:30):
That's twenty sixth. Well, I do have said a record.
I've been on the ballot the longest.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
Of any human right, and this is the year. This

Speaker 6 (10:39):
Two more years now. I've revolved. You guys have always
been great.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
On the best Steve Garvey, there's no one better, and
we will return. As David Vasse has come down to
hold court, he's standing right on the edge of the grass.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So much he hates us on days like this.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Lissy, he just he wants nothing to do with us
on days like this, leave me alone.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
Matt's dressed like he's one of the guys John Rambo
kills in the movie Early.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I Didn't come here.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
Dylan Hernandez Pingolorus got his look on his face. It
looks all u ping a lord, yes, smug and a

Speaker 3 (12:22):
It's really something to see. And our girls showed up
with her camp quorder. This one reporter.
Speaker 8 (12:27):
This last time money was on the field, it was
a workout before the NLDS.
Speaker 5 (12:32):
That's right, love us in the air. It was love
us in the air. The great David Vsse is here.
Dave has got Marongo Casino Dodgers on deck with the
great Tim Kates. He of course will have Dodger talk postgame.
Another opening day coming gone. And now that we've been
down here for a while that have seen how things
have developed. You're right, this is not as big of
(12:54):
an opening day as last year. It's it's not the
same as it was. You're right, it's great. I don't
know why you dressed like a first person shooter, but
it's still not in timidation fact, it's still not that
you're right. And maybe it's the Tigers, maybe it's the games.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
And just say valuable in his backpack that he's carrying
it around.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
It was a terrible mistake. I don't know why I
brought it down. It was a horrible mistake. Two sodas
a water about four things. Some trail mix, truly, you
want some trail mix.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
That's that hardball's playbook back there. Here you go. Damn,
I got some chili mango for you.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
I could use this in the shift inning.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
That looks absolute.
Speaker 9 (13:34):
I was driving in and it sounded like money had
to protect your mech A lot of somebody else taking
a sip of it.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
The engineer tried to snatch it. He did, And look
at this outfit of intimidation. Shit, what kind of coffee
did you guys have going on the air?
Speaker 9 (13:45):
That was ridiculous the way you were like, slightly negative,
a lot of energy, talking about money, talking about all
kinds of stuff.
Speaker 5 (13:52):
They threw a couple of curve balls at us right
before the show started. And I'm an old an old
dog that doesn't like to learn new tricks. What do
you make of a Matt's outfit today? Or what do
you think you?
Speaker 9 (14:01):
I don't know how have you analyzed it so far?
I really like what's underneath the vests?
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Okay, thank you?
Speaker 9 (14:07):
I don't know what's in a backpack. He never studies
I made a mistake. I made a mistake.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
I've got two sodas, three things of trail mix, and
some chili mango that I gave David.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
So you were worried they.
Speaker 9 (14:17):
Weren't going to feed you here today because I heard
about the you know, the sweet They're not going to
be counting the perscudo slices that I'm just proving.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
I listened to you guys, that is you're the best
oral or her shots here. Now, are you not working today?
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Oral?
Speaker 3 (14:31):
You're not doing the Spectrum Sportsnet thing?
Speaker 9 (14:33):
No, that'll be tomorrow Today's ESPN. But I'm working because
I came in for you guys. Oh my god, Kates
Kate's is texting me, waking me up. Hey, we'd love
to have you. I'm like, where are you going to
be in front of the Dodger dugout in the wireless mike.
So I'm like, all right, buddy, I'll be there. You
know what sends back to me.
Speaker 5 (14:50):
Hearts Hart and I sent an American flag to try
to tug at your heart strings because you know, it's
opening day and we love Amra.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Yeah, but he was using usually he me alone, just
he and I.
Speaker 9 (15:02):
But he turned into a group text and added you
because he knew I wouldn't turn you down.
Speaker 5 (15:06):
Yeah, and I'm sending hearts in American flags?
Speaker 3 (15:10):
No, do you want to sign?
Speaker 8 (15:11):
His replica jersey giveaway is on Saturday? His eighty eight
that Walker Buehler war at the parade. I'm mad at
Dave Roberts.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
Dave.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Why well, Dave?
Speaker 9 (15:21):
Everybody asked to Dave, what do you like about having
the ring ceremony on day two and the World Championship
flag today? And he goes, I like the fact that
we're spreading out things for fans to enjoy.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
And I'm like, what about day three?
Speaker 10 (15:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Day three is a Jersey day. He could have remembered that.
So I'm texting him right now and I'm I'm.
Speaker 8 (15:40):
At hey, by the way, or I got after David
Cohne Dave Cone?
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Oh I did?
Speaker 8 (15:48):
I said, Hey, Cone, remember when the Dodgers beat you
in the NLCS. I love I love that Cony and
I have a good relationship to that article on Newsday
come so bad?
Speaker 4 (15:58):
You know what off?
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Oh my goodness?
Speaker 8 (16:01):
I said, hey, does Doc good? And still get mad
when I bring up Mike soshis home?
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Wow?
Speaker 5 (16:05):
I mean, why so much bad blood on opening day, Dave,
Why you gotta be that way?
Speaker 3 (16:08):
I think he was eight years old back then. Yes,
that's true, that's true. That's a true. How's your body oral?
Speaker 5 (16:16):
We know that you you got your arms and legs
replacing the right hit my right hip.
Speaker 9 (16:21):
Yeah, I've got a titanium right hip. But they didn't
want me to possibly get any blood clots on the
long flights over. So e K came over from first base,
got on the mound and did the couple broadcasts at
an outstanding job with Joe Davis. So I'll be fine.
I'm walking around here. I'm twenty five days postop. I
would say pain level is a half every once in
a while, but other than that, all good.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
No, I heard that you were just a torso and
they replaced your arms and legs.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
I think it's time to go to break.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
No, it's misinformation real quick, or before we let you go.
You know about uh, you know, all about winning championships
and having to walk around after that with the pressure
of having won a championship, and the city is so excited.
I don't think we've ever seen the city like it
was this offseason. After the Dodgers won. You know, how
(17:09):
do they handle that? How do they just go about
their business as a baseball team after such exaltation.
Speaker 9 (17:15):
Well, when you come back and if it's the same roster,
it's really weird to create chemistry. When you look around
the locker room, it's all the same guys.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
But this team.
Speaker 9 (17:22):
Improved, and it improved with some new faces, guys that
wanted to be Dodgers, Guys that Dodgers wanted on the team.
So I think they're going to look around that locker
room and go it is a brand new year, and
we are better than we were last year. We're probably
going to have better health than we had last year.
So let's just go out. And I love what Dave
Roberts said about, you know, being the hunter compared to
(17:43):
the hunted, So you've got to flip that equation in
your mind. And that is hard for a championship team.
But not everybody on this roster that's an impact player
has won a championship and a Dodger uniform.
Speaker 8 (17:54):
Fluty day starter snel Zilla, that's right, that's his best
friend over there.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
How about that? Jesse? Kind of does that make it
weird for everybody else?
Speaker 9 (18:02):
Yeah, it's just like Dave's been trying to recruit him
for every year, Like I would have an exclusive interview
schedule with Dave Essay and he go Snell's in town, oral.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
I don't know if I can be there never, And
you know what, Snell.
Speaker 9 (18:15):
Had an off day and he's gonna come over here
because he wants to be a Dodger someday. So I
don't think I'll be around today, But can we do
it by phone from home?
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Maybe on a day where you can do it? Or
my number one guy? You don't ever think no.
Speaker 9 (18:27):
I've caught him in the hallway up there in the
press box with Rick Monday saying you're my number one guy.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Rick, you don't let it tell a different Rick, number
one guy.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
It is, it, truly is incredible that Dave has been
trying to get Blake Snell on this team legitimately for
five years. He has been talking to us on the
show about getting Blakes. The fact that his here is ridiculous, right.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
I know you.
Speaker 9 (18:49):
Promoed Dave's gonna be on and all of a sudden,
after learning that we're gonna have all this Dodger news.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
And it's going to be so exciting, and then he
talks about Snell for about four minutes. It's the starter.
Tell you now, yes, you're do you know what? You
have a great relationship with the players.
Speaker 9 (19:05):
I love the way they poke at you, throw things
at you, dump water on you, all the things that
they do. But you still end up getting the best material.
You are amazing at your job and you you have
job security off the chart.
Speaker 10 (19:19):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
Just don't swear on the air and don't go down
any more slides.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
If not, maybe I could get a job at Rotlo Chevrolet.
Speaker 9 (19:25):
Easy on the Rotolo Chevrolet. We're not paying for that ad,
but it is in Fontana. And then there's also a
GMC dealer in Victorville, but we're not paying. Don't tell
the big guy, the guy with that accent.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
He's down, Mamaya. That's right, we've got a new boss.
I'll let her do something to you tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (19:43):
Oh, I can't wait to meet it. Yeah, we look
forward to you meeting our new boss. And don't worry.
Rotlo Chevrolet shoutouts.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
All day on the shake some ass, well, there might
be another dealership in the future, so watch you know.
What the hell with them?
Speaker 5 (19:59):
You know, orl's gonna like John Elway man, go see cow,
it'll be you got to strip down and not a
little kid pot.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
I got to ride like a big old whatever.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
I do.
Speaker 5 (20:14):
Like you guys, get a little loose on those local
commercials and show some personality and have some but you
don't take yourself too seriously ORL no, that's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
Well they I don't want to be like these tight
asses out of here.
Speaker 9 (20:24):
Mike Opposio is the dancing man at the end of
our commercials, and I joined him, and all of a
sudden they said, you know, you've got to dance at
the end, And they said can you dance bad?
Speaker 2 (20:32):
And I said, yeah, that'll be one take. So that's
not that's not Ronnie Rottolo. That's dancing with you at
the end. I just assume that's it was. Joe Davis
got some goods. He's got his phone out. He's yeah,
he's watching me practice. It's a new dance step on
the on the new hip. Yeah, we love you or
gat or herscheizer.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
Ladies and gentlemen, should we continue with that saying so
we can cut you loose to David a.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Little while, take a break you're good. You got coming back.
Speaker 9 (21:00):
Say I listen because he has insider stuff, the inside
stuff like a Madrasha.
Speaker 8 (21:05):
Now that you know the inside. Hey, look, so Liza's
gonna grab some bulldog right.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
Swallowing siege for me out here. We gotta go to NBC. Now,
all right, Dave, we're gonna talk. Oh, we're gonna talk. Dave,
We're gonna talk right now.
Speaker 7 (21:20):
Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
You've been doing okay.
Speaker 8 (21:21):
By the way, Oral hershis So you want to talk
about a world series hangover?
Speaker 3 (21:25):
He did not have one.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
In nineteen eighty nine.
Speaker 8 (21:27):
He should have won the cy Young back to back years,
but back then the writers were a little short sighted
and only looked at wins and losses. He was a
five hundred pitcher that year. Record wise, his era was loser, lower,
more innoc than anybody else, and he lost to some
reliever in San Diego.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
Should have won it no run support.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
In eighty nine he lost the Shy Young do or
a reliever, Yeah, a.
Speaker 4 (21:51):
Reliever in San Diego, not Trevor Hoffmann.
Speaker 5 (21:54):
There was a different time, historical perspective that we're looking for,
and you were twelve.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
I won.
Speaker 5 (22:00):
Con Hey, Cony Dave Overall, Bill Lake Snell pitching today,
It is kind of exciting.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
I mean, you are friends with a guy.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
We've known him about the guy for a long time
because of your relationship with him. Cy Young Award winner twice,
and he's in a Dodger uniform. How significant is this
today for him to get out there and do this
And we've seen some other guys Kent Tamida, Jack Flaherty,
Old Blackjack as Kate's.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Hey, it's significant Snell.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
He's been wanting to be in a Dodger uniform ever
since he was on the verge of free agency with
the Padres, So this is something he's wanted for a
long time. And he's got about thirty five to forty
family and friends in town and going to be here
at the game, But he told his wife to keep
those people away until after the game because he wanted
(22:51):
to lock in on today. The biggest thing for Snell
today and something that was in and out in spring training,
was the feel for his secondary pitches, especially his change up.
His change up plays off his fastball better than any
of his other pitches. So for him to be able
to gather himself, keep his poise and get quick outs,
(23:12):
don't go deep into counts because that keeps the entire
defense flat footed.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
Nobody wants that.
Speaker 3 (23:17):
Am I right in saying this, Dave? Or am I wrong?
I feel like Smell is a typically slow starter. Right,
that's a false narrative.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
I'm just fast narratively flips a sweat.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Well, it doesn't flip a switch. But really, close is
strong one hundred. He does close strong.
Speaker 8 (23:35):
Last year, his last ten starts was the best ten
starts to finish out a season than any other pitcher
in baseball history. Look it up, right, But last year
the reason why he was a slow starter, he's sinally
and far Han rushed him in San Francisco. They were
desperate for him. He hurt his groin, he had to reset,
and when he came back he threw a no hitter.
(23:56):
So throw that all out the window. But he is
a strong finisher.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
I heard Buster only pick him for Cy Young this year.
I love that, you do.
Speaker 8 (24:04):
I love that, But I love Yamamoto more, yamamotos my
pick National League Cy Young?
Speaker 5 (24:09):
And what did you say to Kensamyeta and Jack Flaerny
over there when you were over there chopping it up with.
Speaker 7 (24:15):
Those guys day.
Speaker 5 (24:16):
Well, and you've worn a blazer tonight you're doing some
sports net stuff.
Speaker 4 (24:20):
Now it's opening day.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
Nice, you look good.
Speaker 8 (24:22):
Either I'm gonna look like you and money, or I'm
gonna look like one of these other guys with a
sport code.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
I look normal.
Speaker 8 (24:28):
I don't see there's anything wrong with the way. Not
if I have to do an interview after the game.
Right on the field, I feel like I look great.
Last time Jack Blarney, by the way, was at Dodger Stadium.
He was tipping over during his interview with Oral Herscheiz
on a director's chair.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
He was on noodle legs.
Speaker 8 (24:43):
Yes, we were actually on the same parade flow and
it was an adventurous scene to be overserved.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
Well, and Matt honestly is dressed like a murderer today.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
I don't think.
Speaker 5 (24:54):
I don't see it any other warpshooter. Yeah, he's either
killed a man or a deer. Yeah, he's killed someday.
Speaker 8 (25:00):
That Flarity is like he's the guy that said it's
taking it all in. Yesterday the Tigers came here to work.
It's the first time Flarity Oral Jack flarerty back at
Dodger Stadium for the first time since you caught him
falling out of his chair.
Speaker 9 (25:16):
Well, I know Jack's gonna have some emotions. We've seen
an emotional guy out there on the mountain as a
Dodger in a Dodger uniform. We've seen his mom crying
in the stands, and that's gonna be another thing that
he's going to have to deal with. But as a
big leaguer, as anybody who plays sports, you've got to
take all those different energies and you got to bring
it into focus.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
Glad you're not working today, oral so you can hang
out with us. Well yeah, not only that, but you
can also console Assay, Who's gonna get emotional when Smell
takes the mound? You know, I mean he tears of joy,
but he's gonna it's gonna be almost well, you know.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
They have usually a young person delivered the first pitch
ball to the mountain.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
I think Vestigation should do it. That's a great call.
Speaker 9 (25:53):
Hey, walk out, I have a real Davy vessage jogging
out there.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
We would do that for you, bulldog, I would do
that for you.
Speaker 5 (25:59):
Fascint was just saying when you were talking to Mario
so Lee's and being so gracious we can be see
even though they fired me, was saying that you should
have won the cy Young at eighty nine, and some
loser in San Diego won.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
I am.
Speaker 9 (26:12):
I'm going to continue not to rip on Dave anymore
because he's so right about that.
Speaker 8 (26:17):
I told them a short reliever one and you were
five hundred with a lack of run support.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Yeah, well you're wanting the stat The.
Speaker 9 (26:25):
War stat didn't exist back then. But if but if
you go back and look at the wars, I mean,
if anybody believes in that or any other things. Yeah,
it was a it would have been a very close race,
and maybe I would have gotten a.
Speaker 3 (26:35):
Few more votes.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
Very very humble, very gracious.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
That's the high road. So we just keep going. Petros,
I'm done. You can take the mic back, all right, Well,
thank you, you are am.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
I invited on Saturday to throw out the first pitch
with you and guy.
Speaker 9 (26:48):
You know, Claremont Legends attic. We got Joe Kelly tomorrow
out in Legends attic.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
He's very available these days.
Speaker 9 (26:54):
Well, we can only hope that he's healthy and he
finds a job and he'll make he'll want the pitch.
Speaker 8 (26:58):
Okay, thanks, Ral, Hey will you talk to Walker Buehler.
How often will you correspond with Walker Buehler this year
in Boston?
Speaker 9 (27:06):
I would hope after every outing I would text him
and encourage him. And hopefully he doesn't need encouragement the
way we needed it last year. But those five or
six starts when he came back, he wasn't sure he
was going to be on the playoff roster for a
while there, and.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
Then he did a nice job getting everything in line.
Speaker 9 (27:21):
And really, you know, when he simplified his delivery and
simplified his stuff down to maybe two three pitches, you know,
he started to master them and started trying, start of
experimenting and throwing five and six different pitches.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Has he returned to your jersey from nineteen eighty eight
that he wore during the parade.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
He did, but there were still more new and different
smells on it. Get it over to Steve eighties. Hey,
you can't teach that.
Speaker 4 (27:47):
Steven eighty from Frank Sinatra, shakans Orel, you're the best.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
We love your ORL. Can I wear the jersey on Saturday?
Geez Dave? Sorry, Now you're like a bulldogs and eddies.
They're a gay couple, you see, because it's right there
in the west, is it.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
Yeah, these two guys, two guys just that's the Spectrum
news people.
Speaker 3 (28:05):
Yeah, exactly, tell you I'm about it. That's right, we'll
be back.
Speaker 8 (28:09):
We got more great sports Taby Cochito Cruz will come
on your show.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
There he is in a suit number.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Look at him. Kombra Wow, wow mooe ombra a lot.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
He's very thirsty as well.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
There's a lot of thirst out here.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
As we approached first pitch, the thirst becomes even more parched.
Speaker 3 (28:29):
Thing. It's just flown by, has it?
Speaker 5 (28:33):
You know they say that when you're on a state
out and the only thing you've got to hold is
your cold rifle.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Fred Smith, You guys.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
Really photo on the field like the pr staff just did.
Speaker 3 (28:47):
Whenever we touched the grass.
Speaker 5 (28:48):
Get The last time we got taken out on the
grass was for Ned Colletti to cuss us out.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
He cussed us out and he walked.
Speaker 4 (28:54):
Away and then somebody came up and they said, get
off the grass.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
That's an you a timeline.
Speaker 8 (29:00):
He was on Rogan and Rodney again like it was
twenty fifteen for about a half hour.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
And he had a glove.
Speaker 8 (29:07):
By the way, corrections and retractions on behalf of them.
They were saying Bill Plashki and Dylan Hernandez were their friends.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
A wrong, B. They weren't here in the press, Hey, Roy, wrong?
Speaker 8 (29:21):
Thank you, Dave than you on the pregame in his
tenth season as the Dodger manager, two time World Series champion,
Dave Roberts.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Done, that's why we don't have twelve done.
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Thanks a lot, dude.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
Hey, just come to those who wait, oh bottle guy. Now, okay,
thank you everybody.
Speaker 10 (29:42):
We'll be right back, honey, And he's Yamamoto.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
They're back on the here, folks. They got to touch up.
Speaker 5 (29:56):
H David Vasse asked a very interesting question on the
Instagram Live on five seventy right now, which is who
is my favorite Dodger, current Dodger, current Dodger Now that
James Outman, who really is just my dad's favorite Dodger,
Now that James and I don't really have like favorite players,
(30:18):
I guess in that way, but I guess I'd say
Max Munsey because my son likes.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Well, there we go. What was Matt's What was Matt's?
I said Miguel Rojas because he was nice to gave vibe.
No after what he did to Jazz Chisholm shoes.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
I know.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
I mean that's a Hey, look at this dude. Look
at all the stud Jurle, the geez, all the all
the pr studs coming out. David Vasse right now is
doing an Instagram live while we're doing our show.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Oh yeah, we're on the air.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
So we're on the air, James on the air, and
we are waiting to talk to Andrew Friedman. This is
the moment get out or Seeds. You can watch this
moment unfold live on the Instagram live. So here he comes.
Here he comes, and we're gonna interview him. Oh he's
(31:10):
talking to He's talking to a well dressed man right now.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
Yeah, you're gonna get the moment with the Seeds. Here
we go.
Speaker 5 (31:15):
Here he is joining us right now, exciting the architect,
Frank Lloyd Wright, the man that built this Dodger juggernaut.
Everybody loves Andrew Friedman from top to bottom. He is
a hero to the people of the city. David Vasse
glomming on on an Instagram live while we're trying to
do this with his new air, joining us on the
(31:38):
Amphi seventy LA Sports Toyota, Southern California. Celebrity microphone. It
is Andrew Friedman on the Petros and Buddy Show on
Opening day here at Dodger Statum.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Great to see you. How are you. I'm good?
Speaker 10 (31:50):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (31:51):
The Dave say things a little distracting totally. I don't
know if it's him talking, doing the head or the plugs.
I don't know what's wanting.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Oh you wait to see that by June Visual. And
it's gonna look like a bushy jungle up there in
some of those sparse spots.
Speaker 11 (32:07):
It's not just an investor, he's a client's right, Bosley.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
And we did get involved with that through advertising on
the radio while you were still in Tampa Bay.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
That is absolutely true.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (32:18):
You know, uh, it just doesn't feel like you guys
ever stopped. There's always something exciting going on personally. What's
it like for you coming back to Japan and and
getting ready for Opening day with the team you built.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
It's pretty darn cool.
Speaker 11 (32:31):
Yeah, it's it's been a whirlwind. Winning those two games
in Japan helped. Sitting there that week, getting back into
exhibition games knowing we had two in the bank was nice,
But it was really about getting guys just readjusted acclimated.
As great as that trip is, it takes a toll
on people and just reacclimating and getting their legs under them,
(32:52):
but our guys are ready to.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
Go opening day starter Blake Snell, I think people I
shouldn't say that. Some might just suspect.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Oh yeah, they just they get Blake Snell for like
two hours, they sign a contract and now he's a Dodger.
Give us an idea of the league work that goes
into a signing of Blake Snell, of Roki Sasaki and
how you put this team together and how much work
is actually done before that announcement comes through your press release.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
Yeah, there is a ton that goes into it.
Speaker 11 (33:19):
And the ones you're successful on you don't care about
the work you put in and how long it took,
and the ones you miss out on in the ten
twenty thirty plus hours of time that you just lit
on fire. That's the part that's not awesome. But when
it leads to a good outcome, it's all worth it.
In Blake's case, obviously, going through what he went through
(33:42):
last offseason, we knew that he was going to want
to do something early and we jumped on that. Other
teams were obviously involved, but we were quickly leading up
to Thanksgiving to knock that thing out. My wife wasn't
very happy with me leading into Thanksgiving, but.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
The World Series. Yeah, and we signed him.
Speaker 11 (34:02):
Had we not then it would have been an uncomfortable thing.
Speaker 7 (34:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
What Uh?
Speaker 2 (34:07):
We had heard for years that Blake Snell wanted to
be a Dodger, I know, and he had multiple opportunities,
so kind of give us give us an idea of
what goes into to that when you know a player
wants to be here, and does that change negotiations at all?
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (34:22):
I mean, I you know, I've known Blake since he's
eighteen years old, and when he was with the Padres
and we'd play him multiple times a year, I'd always
stop down and say lo to him and catch up
with him for a little bit. And just knowing people
that knew him, you know, we knew that we were
very high on his list and that he did want
to be a Dodger. And I think that helps because
we really wanted Blake Snell going into this offseason. Knowing
(34:45):
that he really wanted to be here, it's such a
helpful jumping off point to getting to a deal. Deals
are hard, and they're tricky, and there's a lot that
goes into it and a lot of assumptions. When those
two things are in place, you have to really mess
it up for it to happen, or just get beat,
which happens. But it's certainly helpful.
Speaker 5 (35:05):
You know, it's crazy to see what happened to Mookie
Batts the last week or so. Have you ever i mean,
can you compare it to anything you've seen before? And
it feels like, I mean, he's a little gaunt, but
on the road to recovery. Tough way to start the
season from one of your best players.
Speaker 11 (35:20):
Yeah, Fortunately we had the extra time with Japan leading
up to you know, getting him in there in the
last Freeway Series game was really helpful. It was scary,
I mean, not knowing what it was and testing for
everything and nothing coming back other than we knew he
was really sick and the weight that he shed, But
(35:41):
just talking to him twenty minutes ago and just he
looks so much better each day. You can see the
life returning to him and the weight coming back on.
So fortunately, I think the timing of when it happened
played a little bit if it was going to happen
at all. The timing wasn't bad and we got him
in a good spot. Will continue to monitor him as
(36:01):
we get into the.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Year kind of what goes into because we know Freddie
wants to play one hundred and sixty two and MOOKI
wants to play one hundred and sixty two. How do
you guys, who's in that? If you can tell, it's
like who's in those meeting? How do you decide? You
know what, let's let's not do this just yet.
Speaker 11 (36:17):
Luke wants to play one sixty two, but he's much
more reasonable than Freddy. He will listen to logic Freddie's
is you know, you love where it comes from. It's pure,
it's genuine, says, hey, you guys pay me to play,
that's my job, Like I need to play. I'm not
paid to watch. And it's such an old school mentality
(36:39):
and we love it. That being said, you know, as
we continue over the next couple of years, being able
to strategically mix those in, it's just gonna help him
be that much more productive. But we'll see if that
lands with him at all.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
You mentioned Japan, and obviously you go to every market,
and you know what it's like with this Dodger roster
when you go to the different Major League cities around America.
But as someone that's been around the game for a while,
give us an idea of what Japan looked like, what
your arrival was like, what this team means to that country.
Speaker 11 (37:10):
Now, Yeah, it's pretty amazing. I was saying that someone
the other day. Three years ago, you would go to
Japan and you couldn't really find a Dodger hat. There
just wasn't much supply and whatever was there maybe got
picked over by a couple.
Speaker 7 (37:25):
Of fans here or there.
Speaker 3 (37:26):
Now you can't find it because they can't keep it
on the shelves.
Speaker 11 (37:29):
The inventory is flying off, and it's incredible to see
the number of people just walking the streets and Dodger gear.
And you know, obviously our fan base in Los Angeles
is incredible and it's the most passionate of any city
in this country in my opinion. And then you add
(37:50):
on to it, you know, tens of millions of people
in Japan, and you know, this is a worldwide brand,
the Dodgers, and it really speaks to that when you
see the passion that not only the Japanese culture has
for baseball, but specifically for the Dodgers.
Speaker 5 (38:08):
You know, you don't get to be one of the
most celebrated front office guys or executives in all of
sport because you don't have foresight. I mean, that's your
job is to see things, you know, a couple of
years ahead or just ahead of time. But could you
have ever imagined the marriage of Otani and this brand
being I mean, he hasn't even pitched yet, but being
(38:29):
what it is. I mean, we've all been around here
for a long time, and I mean, yeah, we said, yeah,
it's gonna be big, and Fultani's on the Dodgers, but
I don't think any of us really envisioned what it
would actually be like.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
Did you have an inkling of that?
Speaker 1 (38:42):
No?
Speaker 11 (38:42):
I think that's very fair. Even our most aggressive case scenario.
What actually transpired blew it out of the water. It's crazy,
just the synergy and the just emotion and you created
so quickly, and just what a great marriage it was
(39:05):
and has been and will continue to be, even greater
than we could have imagined.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
We look in the dugout and we see the carryall
full of giants. We know you like the seeds. Oh yeah,
this is pan cakes.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
Made a run to Dick's Sporting Goods a little bit earlier,
and he's like, you know what, I'm gonna get every
variety of smacking.
Speaker 4 (39:25):
We don't have a desk this year. We don't have
a desk, but we wanted to lay it out in
a more.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
Like we're trying to figure out which one will we
go for. We got all the different so we want
to make sure he wanted. Tim wanted to make sure
you were squared away for today. And we're trying to
figure out which of all these flavors would be the
would be the president of Baseball operations.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Down there.
Speaker 7 (39:45):
That must be Tim's favorite.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
He's trying to that one down there. There we go.
What do we got there?
Speaker 2 (39:51):
That's boring exactly So I think that's it right. So
we got garlic palm, we got shtar HELLI pants I.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Think too aggressive? Oh, chocolate, banana, chocolate, peanut butter.
Speaker 11 (40:00):
Last year opening day went well, the garlic farm put.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Work all right?
Speaker 5 (40:03):
There we go, Okay, garlic Farm, one more time than
we appreciate you and congratulations on all of your success.
It's so much fun to be a part of it
and watch what you guys have built. It's a great
thing for the city.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
Awesome, thank you guys. Absolutely, Tim.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
There he goes Andrew Freeman, president of Baseball Operations.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
The president, the architect, the man with a plan that
worked out well. Kates, I think going well with it.
I mean I think it would have been better if
we had a dask.
Speaker 5 (40:39):
Yeah, of course you let up the recall into your
house and he puts out all the pots of pants
a tumperware.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
I felt like I was selling bootlegged seeds over here,
like on the side. You know, He's like, what's that one?
Deep down? That's your favorite? I was like, that's a
cool current.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Flavor, right, don't take that one. I'm gonna start gritting
your teeth now.
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Now, Matt, there's a couple of cold michiladas. Again, speaking
of are we done? Cage, it's a little bit like
a jam star's hat story. You know, it's been picked over.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
Yeah, I don't think we're going anybody else down here
on the field. He's no mar not here today because
of there's no spectrum. No spectrum, so he's out, I
mean flash, he's still down here. We haven't talked to Bill.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
One more hard look for old feather hair, and then all.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Shaking Joe Davids. We should ask for Joe. I feel
like we've had everybody else here. No, he's not, he's not.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
He's waiting.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
He's waiting for us to come on air. That's what's
going on, is he's been the reason. I mean, we
are the sun and he is uranus, and he has
been really he has been orbiting us for the last
two hours.
Speaker 5 (41:39):
Well I didn't see it like that, but here's you
don't think that much of myself, like anybody really actually
wants to talk to me.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
I think it's I think he's like I don't know
if those guys like me. I feel like every time
I'm down here, they never invite me on the air.
They talked to Oral, they talked to everybody else. They
never grabbed me.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
When he saw you, we thought we finally hired a hitman.
Speaker 3 (41:58):
We'll be right back. We're gonna strip Joe Davis apparently
so hot right now.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
