units can always be relived by procuring the podcast wherever
you prefer, but we prefer the iHeartRadio app. George Reister
is in for p today. George, appreciate it. I did
not give you an opportunity because I just kind of
briefly mentioned I think something about college football and we
(01:46):
ended up getting on a roll at the start of
last hour. But for the people that are loving and
they should be loving what they've heard the last hour,
I mentioned you do a lot got your own radio show.
You're all over the base, but you have launched this
YouTube channel that is gotten quite a bit of traction.
Share with the people what they can watch, how often
you post, and where they can watch it.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yes, so you guys can go over to Unafraid Show
on YouTube exactly how raid show yep, just how it
just how it sounds. And there's college football content every
single day every day, two live damn night yep. Two
live shows a week. Now that's usually Tuesday Thursday, but
obviously i am I'm here on a on a Thursday,
(02:27):
so so then so it'll be tomorrow instead and then
during the season we go Tuesday Thursday Sunday. And it's
been great man. So this year too, I'll be doing
games for c W pre pre and post games. So
it's exciting.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
What's c W got Uh? They have the ACC and PAC.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Twelve gotcha, So I'm I'm excited, man.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
This is this is the best time of the entire year.
So PAC twelve this year is still the PAC two
right Uh?
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yes, correct, And then next year it goes to the
pack now nine as it stands for all state schools,
every single one of them.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Every single why yes, and then in basketball you have
Gonzaga State.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
There you go.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
I will refer to the.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Eastern Washington don Zaga State. Yeses, yeah, it is wild
that every I'm trying to think if there's any states
out there that they haven't secured yet that might be
I guess New Mexico State.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yes, yes, they could.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
There is no Nevada State. If they want to give
him a jump in class, you could go Montana State,
I believe. Is that Montana or Montana State that always wins?
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Uh, they're both good.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
They are both good.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, they're both good. Which tries to gri is that Montana?
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Gotcha? So there we go. South Dakota State, yep.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yes, I have learned a lot about FCS foot football
because my son plays at uc DA.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
That's right, Aggie's yep, let's go Aggies. We used to
talk to Dallas Starts when he was a coach for
the Yaggies. He would come on every year, I gotta know,
three or four weeks and we would talk a little
bit of Aggie football.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, I'm deuced.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I it is something I believe that when you play
that this time of year, I think your your body,
especially if you go to the pros. You've played for
so long that it's like your testosterone gets a little
higher this time of year.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
You start getting a little excited.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, And I'm not going out there hitting anybody, right,
stay away from my body.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Is this his first year that he's going into or
is this.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
It's his second year?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
So he's a redshirt freshman, and so it's so it's
exciting he's gonna be competing for the starting job. And
I just can't I just can't wait to see it
as a dad. And but I now understand what my
parents felt watching me.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Play, yes or high school school rows.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, because I.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Get nervous watching him play, even though he's competent. He's yes,
it's not in my control and it's your kids, so
you always want great things to happen to him. And
I'm just sitting up there stummach tied in knots, where
everybody else around is cheering or booing or whatever else.
I'm just standing there, like, just just grinding it out
(05:10):
into the games.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
So I'm assuming you went on a visit. Yeah, So
my daughter played lacrosse and she went on a visit
to Davis and so some of the places she was
being recruited to play were considerably more expensive than a
UC system, and for women's lacrosse, you're not getting you know,
any money there just kind of you might get a
little bit. So I'm like, okay, I got UC over
(05:34):
here and this is you know, I can this. This
is kind of right in the wheelhouse and what I
want to spend. And we're walking around. I'm like, hey,
isn't this great? You know? And she's like it's as
we start walking around the town and I'm like, look
at this ice cream shop.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
And flat you can ride your bike?
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Flat? And I said, you know what, bit ask you know,
these are all kids that are working the counters. Just
kind of ask them. She's like, I don't know. It's like,
don't be shy, they'll be cool. Just say hey, I'm
thinking about coming here to play lacrosse. How do you
like it? And so we're at the ice cream place
and and you know, it looks like it's popping and
these girls are laughing and she's like, hey, how do
you how do you like Davis? And you know, and
she's like, how do I gets terrible?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Nothing to do?
Speaker 1 (06:11):
The nice place. There's no parties that there's like two bars.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Definitely. I'm slow up.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
There, and I'm like, well, it seems like a really
nice She goes, yeah, that's what my dad said too,
that it's a really nice place. And then I was like,
uh huh, I guess we're not going to Davis.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
She's like, where a party.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Slap me right in the face. Yeah, And he was
just like, uh.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
The price.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yesterday's prices are not today's exactly.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
And that same trip, it was like a week later
she was looking at Cal as well. And so we
were on campus at Berkeley and you're like, I'm like,
all right, here we go. Let's go out exactly great school,
and you're packed twelve. This will be great. And so
we're on campus and you know, Cal is beautiful. It's
one of the prettiest campuses anywhere in America, and it's
obviously the highest regarded public university in America. So this
(07:01):
is fantastic and she loves it. I love it. We
walk off campus and we're cruising around you know, Berkeley,
and she she's young, you know, she's I think she
was a sophomore when she started getting recruited, so she's fourteen,
she's like fifteen years old, and you know, the old
man doesn't smoke weed in the house. So it's like
her first time I think smells She's like, what does
(07:24):
that smell? And I'm like, oh, people are smoking weed? Yeah,
and she's like, well, like what is going on out here?
And it's people on cardboard and dogs and need I said, hey, babe,
you saw what it was like on campus, right, Yeah,
that's what happens when you do your homework. Don't do drugs.
You'll be on a piece of barboard, so with a
(07:44):
dog begging for food. Don't do drugs, dude.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
There used to be a guy on Las Vegas Boulevard,
like around the Coca Cola of that story. Yeah, there
theirs to be a guy in a wedding dress and
he was there all day, okay, And I remember I
was walking by with with a frime one time and
and I was like, dang, how many bad decisions does
(08:08):
it does it take to end up on Las Vegas
in a wedding dress?
Speaker 1 (08:13):
One hundred and fifteen degrees?
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yes, yes, And I still have not been able to
come up with an accurate answer because I mean, it
could just be one. It could be a drug, or
it could be or it could be a litany of bad.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
When he was when he was when he was reading
Choose your Own Adventure. He got eaten by the YETI
that's that's ultimately what happened with that gentleman.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
All right.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
So we have Jose modin the next segment talking Dot
your Baseball. Lorenzo O'Neill, the great charger fullback seventeen years
in the league, did it for the Bolts, for the Saints.
He was uh. For people that may not remember, Lorenzo
O'Neill was the Tennessee Titan that fielded the kick for
(08:55):
the Music City Mirrors City. Yes, so he fielded the kick,
pitched it to Whitecheck, who then threw it across the field.
It was Low who fielded the football though, So.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
He had the hockey assist.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yes, he had the hockey assist and had to know
where Whycheck was had because he said, I know, I
knew they were kicking it to me. He's like, I
he goes. You know, we didn't know for segoes, but
I was like, oh, yeah, this ball is coming to me.
He goes, And I know the play and we've worked
on this play for over a year and we've just
been sitting on it, and this is when we're dusting
it off, and all I'm thinking, man, is catch the ball,
(09:33):
pitch the ball, catch the ball, pitch the ballob and
he executed it perfectly, and it is one of the
most memorable moments in the history of NFL playoffs.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
And watching that so I was like, oh my god,
oh my god, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Yeah, it's one.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Of those yes.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
And it's funny because everybody knows that those plays don't work,
the laterals don't work.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Until they yes.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
And I was a part of one. We were playing
against the Saints and yes. So I'm with the jack
We're playing in Jacksonville, and and it's the end of
the game. We're up by seven points. They we kicked
the ball off to them. They get one play lateral.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Dante Stalworth ends up scoring off of like ten laterals.
And and mind you, in that game, it was super
hot that day. I was I cramped up, and I
remember they I saw Dante running into the end zone.
I almost cried because I was cramping up. I was like,
I can't play anymore. Yes, and uh missed the extra point,
(10:44):
a regular extra pointe extra point. Yes, the old school
and then that guy ended up being our kicker the
next year because Josh Scoby ended up getting.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Hurt, so you bought him dinner. So thank you. Was
cramping up shaking that extra point almost.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
I was.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
It was like tears of joy, I thank you.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
We uh. When the Chargers were playing the Panthers, it
was probably like four years ago when Shane Steichen was
the O C. I don't know if you remember it,
but it was a perfectly drawn up hooking ladder Keenan
to Austin Eckler and Keenan runs the hook and Herbert
delivers it perfectly. Here comes Eckler right behind, and I'm
(11:31):
and I'm you know, when you're calling a game, you're
on the seventh level. Yeah, you can see it. I'm like,
this is gonna happen. Oh my god, this is gonna work.
They're gonna win the game. And Keenan just missed the pitch.
The pitch was just like Eckler's coming full speed. Instead
of throwing it in front of him, it's like just behind.
It was gonna work. And had to reach back and
you know, stalled his stats and defend that came to
(11:54):
wipe him out as opposed to it going and I
saw I saw Shane after the game and I just
looked at him and he looked at me and he goes,
we had it, man, we had it. And I was like,
I know, shame you had it. And it's like what
might have been had that work?
Speaker 2 (12:10):
It isn't that cool when you can see it happening?
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:14):
And you And that's the one of the best parts
about sports is when you're and this why live sports
are so incredible is that you never know what's going
to happen. You can be down twenty in the fourth
quarter and you're like, oh my gosh. Or you can
be down six runs in with two outs and win
(12:34):
the game and everybody's say, oh, the game's over. Everybody's
walking out of the stadium except for the true people
who know that anything can happen.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yeah that listen, parkins a bitch. Okay. Yeah, And sometimes
it is time to go. And I'll tell you My
big thing. What I always used to tell the kids
because they like going to games, is when we're update
whatever team we were watching, Like we're at Dodger game
at seventh inning and they're up five to one and
they're like, we don't want to leave. I'm like, babe,
only bad things can happen. They're up five to one,
(13:05):
so if we stay, the only thing that could be
as excited being that's exciting is they screw this up
and we don't want to be here for that. All right,
we'll listen to that on the radio. So let's get
out of here. And they would be like, So I always.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Thought, I've been trying to find this this scenario, what
is the optimal parking place for Dodger Stadium? Because I've
had great parking where where where I can throw a
baseball and throw it on the field almost And I've
also parked on the on the moon, right, so but
(13:39):
the moon is easier to get out of Dodger Stadium.
So it's like, do you want to walk tremendously far
in and out or do you want to park close
and wait?
Speaker 1 (13:51):
So here's my answer to that seventh inning.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
See, I can't leave it.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
That mic my my, my body will not allow me
to leave in the set. I mean, if it was
if it was like the other day when we were
when it was like eighteen to one, yes, I'm out
of there, right, but so is everybody else.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Yeah, and now you might as well stay because that's
when you're not gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (14:14):
Yeh.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
But in like a three to one game, I can't
leave in the seventh.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
In are I understand? I think that at that point
you just wear it and you accept, Hey, I get
to see something cool. Yeah, and now I just have
to sit in this traffic and deal with it.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
But I did learn something the last time I was
at Dodger Stadium, because I've been there so many times
that I noticed because I bought tickets the same day
of the game, and I looked early that morning. My
jew was a one pm game, and there was a
lot of tickets available on the app that I was using,
(14:49):
and then probably about I bought the tickets about ten
o'clock or eleven o'clock, and then at eleven o'clock I
was like, oh, there was no no, no, no, sorry sorry
sorry it was it was a four o'clock game. There's
a four o'clock game. So all the tickets on the
first base side, which I usually like to sit on,
(15:11):
were available. All the third bases We're gone and my car.
I wasn't really paying attention to the like, I didn't
think this whole thing through yes, and then and then me,
my wife and my youngest kid was there, and I said,
and and a couple of kids were like, nah, I
don't want to go, it's too hot today whatever. So
(15:33):
and I'm sitting there and I'm like, and but I
thought I and we were a row s so I
thought I was going to be high enough to be underneath,
but I needed to be three rows back. And we
were out there scorching, and I was like, oh, this
is why all the first all the third base side.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
My third level third base were twice as expensive as
your first base field levels. Yeah, all right, let's let's
move along.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
Today.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
I'm the word of the day. The word of the
day is robbed.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
And this is about somebody literally being robbed, and that
is Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Kittel Marte, who got robbed while
he was in Atlanta playing in the MLB All Star Game. No,
that's not cool. This goes into the second because this
(16:28):
is not new. This is just the latest high profile
athlete to have his house broken into while he was
on the road. It happened last year to Joe Burrow
having to Patrick Mahomes. Right, Luca Dancik while while with
the Dallas Mavericks. Yes, La La people did not do
that to him, and they all had their houses broken
into and some other guys while they were playing on
(16:48):
the road. And I think these people should be hung
up by their toenails because.
Speaker 5 (16:55):
You just.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Not enough to worry about your playing a game.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Yes, and and I do under understand where like people
feel desperate and all that stuff out out in the world.
We're not talking about the social issues. We're just talking
about the fact that, yes, this dude is on the
road trying to entertain you, and you're like, ah, let's
go get it perfect time, perfect perfect time.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
I don't know what the answer to that is, because
obviously it's become more and more provaently. I think Kelsey
got stuck for some of that there. It's happened to
a lot.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
And they know where you're going to beat because I
mean it's like it's like during the n C Double
A tournament a like or the Big Ten tournament.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
If somebody follows you close, they know where you're going
to be.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
Yes, yes, And it's not like you can be like
other people out in the world, where like Kim Kardashian
can post a later, Graham, because she did something two
days ago and can post it later. When you're doing
live sporting events, everybody knows where you are. Everybody knows
where justin Herbert was this more, Yes, exactly, and in
(18:02):
three weeks everybody knows, like they know the.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Schedule too, we can you know, fifty days he's going
to be in Brazil.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
And that's how Shan and that's honestly how Sean Taylor
ended up getting getting getting killed when he was he
was playing for Washington at the time. It was their
bye week. Right, These dummies don't pay attention.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
They just assumed.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Yeah, they just assumed that he was still up there
and he was in his Florida home and they broke
into it, and unfortunate things happened.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
Yeah, all right, you know what, I'm gonna sip number Unne,
let's go right to the song of the day. Becau
Jose Mota gonna join us in about five minutes.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
This is the song of the day.
Speaker 7 (18:42):
Today's song of the day is Sitting on the Dock
of the Bay from the soulful voice of the Great
Otis Redding, a classic from the year nineteen sixty eight.
As we proceed through a crunchy groove Thursday on the
Petros and Money Show, Moving past the MLB All Star
Break with our friend.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
At George Reister.
Speaker 7 (19:01):
Yeah, sitting in with Matt on the dock of the Bay,
watching four full hours of great sports talk roll away
and into an off day edition of Dodger Talk with
David Vasse that's coming your way at seven o'clock.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Thank you're runing a literation, good alliteration and Ryman Sean
Taylor think we spots me out.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Yes, it's just he's.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Fun to watch him play.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Man.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
That's why I love Derwin. You know, Derwin has got
a lot of that. Sean Taylor. Yeah, it's uh, but man.
When we return baseball, Jose Mota will join us talk
from Dodger Baseball as they get ready to continue with
their best record in the National League toward the playoffs
to defend their World Series championship. Jose Mota will join
us next.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
I'm just.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Watching that time sitting do.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
But in yesterday's save a couple NBA Summer League games
and an award show where everybody tells each other how
awesome they are. But tomorrow baseball is back. Dodgers Brewers
you'll get your first pitch at seven to ten from
the gallupin Motors Broadcast booth. We could not be more
excited about who's going to be on the call. Joins
us regularly here on the Petros and Money Show, a
(20:27):
great cal State Fullerton Titan, and of course spent some
time in the league. He knows what he's doing and
it's a great call. Whenever that Mike opens and he
is talking, it is Jose Mota back on the Petro
some Money show, Hose, how are you?
Speaker 5 (20:41):
I'm doing good loans.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Exactly right, exactly right.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
George Man, Man, I'm doing good.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
Man.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
I'm exciting.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
I'm excited for the for the Dodgers to actually put
a bunch of wins together after the last after the
week before the All Star breakin we will all forget.
Speaker 6 (21:01):
Hey, I'm going to just remember the last two.
Speaker 5 (21:03):
That's though.
Speaker 6 (21:03):
There you go, two games, that's it. That's that's got
a mentality in baseball, man, the previous seven didn't matter.
Look who they're at right now, right, Yeah, that's to
really great.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
It's the best record in the National League. And you know,
OSEI I think the other thing too, is just my
I think my enduring image or my lasting image, I
should say from the games before the All Star break
was Otani in those three innings. I like, I can't,
and I know it's because we've been waiting for it,
but my gosh, watching him pitch, the way this stuff looks,
and the idea that this is a guy that could
(21:33):
give you five six innings in the playoffs, I feel
like it's kind of the overwhelming feeling for a lot
of Dodger fans right now.
Speaker 6 (21:40):
It's tremendous, and I think overall, when you consider the
path he's had to get to this point where he
had to actually be slowed down because Spring Trenting. He
went Spring Trenty. He saw he was like, all out,
you know what it is. You know, like, okay, now
slow it down. Let's let's just slow down because we're
going to have a lot of depth to begin with.
The death has an best that obviously we know, but
(22:01):
he almost thought about Showy and I he was telling
David I say about this and Tim Kates before this
saw on page I said, he's a different monster. When
he's on the mounts. He's way more emotional. He is
more in commander, like the seriesness comes out like this
big monster comes out right. And the most that I've
learned from this is every single pitch has a purpose.
(22:22):
There's no waste that pitch just because it's like every
single pitch has a why Why am I making this
pitch right here? Sometimes I want to miss it. That's command,
having a myths that you want, that's command. If he doesn't,
obviously he's gonna get hurt. He's not perfect, But it's
just to watching Gold throughout his work. Ideally have the
arm when he needs to have it by some things mechanically,
(22:43):
the man velocity. Nobody expects him to be this high,
and he's only going to get a little bit higher.
I think he's on the panel that I've seen the
previous seasons.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Hey, Jose, I'm a little bit nervous because the Dodgers
have the best record in the NL. I don't feel
like we've played our best baseball at all this this season.
Is there another level that we should be expecting them
to get to as it gets closer to the postseason?
Speaker 6 (23:09):
I think so. I think we haven't seen the best
in the pitching. The mop hasn't totally overused for a reason.
The guys have done a nice job keeping everything or floats.
Quite important is the fact that you have an offense
that scores a lot of runs on the average, right,
and they go to their spurts where you know, there's
a little dry period here and there, but that saves
a lot of the the mishaps has not happening overall
(23:32):
in the staff. What I'm looking forward to the most,
I think the second half is going to be more
about a pitching tub, a second half which is what
they need, which is what they explored, which is obviously
what they want. And the addition obviously of Blake Snow
who's just around the corner, Tyler Glastnow's back hopefully for
good all the way through October, hopefully right, and then
Kurf where he is, Emagehm being what he is in Yamamota.
(23:54):
I mean, it can only get better. And I had
the death also a got like with Blesku, you know,
has been up and down and he's going to find
job when he's been up here. But I look forward
to the second half beam more on shortening games by
having your starters go those things that need to go,
because a bullpen's going to be one out if it
doesn't happen that way.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
How you know, speaking of that, what have you noticed,
I mean, you know what it looks like, hose What
have you noticed with Tanner Scott? Is it fixable? How
quickly is it fixable? Is it simple? Is it fatigue?
Speaker 5 (24:22):
Like?
Speaker 1 (24:22):
What is it that's led him to be one of
and I hate saying it this way, but most unreliable
closers in the game Versus last year when he was
one of the best bullpen arms in the game.
Speaker 6 (24:33):
You can clearly see that nobody's blown more saves in baseball.
He's got a big contract for a reason, because the
stuff is just marvelous stuff. And it doesn't matter where
your stuff is if you can't locate it. And you know,
hitters today don't care if you throw one hundred miles
an hour. I mean, he has to be able to
locate your fastball because is your foundation? Number two? Is
this lighter is the biggest story of all beast Lighters
(24:54):
getting hit like never before. That's lot of hitting around
the zone way too much, and then the differential sometimes
it's just not enough to offset guys to get under
the baseball or over the baseball of the slider because
sometimes it stays at the same plant. And you know,
we're live in the area now that the era of
kitch design where guys can go into the lab and go,
(25:15):
you know what, this pitch needs to be doing this
because these those strings are taking against me and it's
all right there, it's feasible. It's an easy fake about
it's not because if you consider his mechanics where he
comes from, he is very official with the high fansciball
because he has a low angle. He's so low on
the ground that at times, if he's not on top
of the baseball with that slider, it stays in the
(25:37):
air of way too much. And I am talking tits
about this. If you go to Baseball Savans and see
the data on where the slider's hot zone was last
year con part of this year, there's absolutely no doubt
as to why the missus this year has been way
too much above the line in the strike zone. Last
things a missus that fastble in ninety seven ninety eight
(25:58):
there were below the zone, and that's why the fastball
was more efficient. The slaughter was missing a lot of
more bats because a little more tilts. He needs a
little more tilts to get on top to have those
guys missing some sliders finish enough.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Well, how concerns should the Dodgers be with this pitching staff,
because obviously it's beat up with Gonsolin out and you know,
and and now with Trying in and Snail out. How
concerning are those injuries and do you expect them back
at any point in time this season even though that
they are on the sixty day deal.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Trying and should be also around the corner knocking on
the door in his rehab that's gone well the last
two wives. I saw him throw a few times up
in same games, and pet went on rehab. The Gonsolin
story obviously is wonder it's further away, but I am encouraged.
I'm not concerned. I'm more encouraged about the fact that
there's some guys coming back. Is like making another addition
or you know, arms that you need. The one thing
(26:54):
though that you never have enough of is pitching. And
even though I'm your freeman, is like, I want to
cure July now, right, remember that in the press conference?
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Yeah in December.
Speaker 6 (27:05):
Well basically just lets you know that it just it
doesn't happen that easily. The s and fourth of the
season tell you that you might have everything planned out
for the next three months and then the following three
and but baseball tell you that, no, sometimes somebody's not
going to perform the way you wanted them to. So yeah,
they're looking for editions. They're looking for help in the
outfield and help in the bump in because they know
that the way the league is right now, and so
(27:26):
many teams in this thing, you've got to have enough death.
But I think if they stay put right now, they
have enough guys to know what they need to do
to win a championship again.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Jose motis with us. He's going to be on the
call starting Tomorrow's. The Dodgers get back at it after
the All Star break by hosting the Brewers out at
Dodger Stadium. Pitching's one thing that the offense has gone
flat the last I mean, it's been a while now,
specifically at the top of the order. The MVPs, I
mean feels like Otani. I don't want to answer the
whole thing for you, but it feels like we've heard
(27:56):
sort of the same thing about while Tani started to
pitch Freeman, we know that ankle's not right, but Mooki's
the one I'm trying to figure out. Is it, like,
what do you think is going on with Muki? What
have you noticed with that swing and why it's gone
so cold?
Speaker 6 (28:09):
One thing for Mooki is Mooki needs to be a
line drive hitter, a line drive hitter, and we're seeing
a lot of lady fly balls, which means that sometimes
the best decisions are not being made in the batter's box.
So in that case, is like, hey, you want him
to be selective, but you want to be aggressive, but
he has to be aggressive to something that he can
(28:30):
handle and not something that is just being thrown. And
he said, that's the pitch I'm looking for.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
There it is.
Speaker 6 (28:35):
If it's not in your own, don't do it. I
think Mooky overall can simplify things because he's a very
smart hitter. He's a ton of to proven fact that
he's a producer. But there's concerns going back to March
when he lost all the weight. Playing shorts up takes
a lot out of you, right, which obviously he's going
to say, no, it's not the matter, but shorts up
takes a lot out of you. It doesn't matter. He
can weigh twohundred twenty pounds two hundred pounds, and I'm
(28:58):
not saying there's a reason why, but he has experience
at this level. Ever, remember he got hurt last year,
ended up going to right field, So it's a it's
a mental and physical adjustment. But to me, it's a
swing path, which is fine. But this more line drives
more both through the infield type of thing. And forget
about lifting because we've seen way too many fly balls
that are not going anywhere because the ball's not jumping
(29:18):
off his bat, especially in early accounts when he does it.
Pitchards know all about this. If I see it, pitchers
see it, and they're just Okay, here's what we got
to do in this situation. Just get them away from
the barrel and so far as work. But he's he
can make some adjustments to make himself better. And there's
no doubt in my mind that he's hungry for this
and this break is going to be huge for him.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
I think is going to be the unsung hero of
this season or the breakout person because like last year
it was Edmund when it came to the playoffs, will
this year will it? Will it be Kim Will it
be Rojas. I mean, who do you think it'll be.
Speaker 6 (29:56):
I'm hoping that, you know, his son Kim becomes a
fact for almost an every day factory because he brings
a lot to the table. Uh that's one factor to me.
But you know what, everybody's hoping his bosket Michael Conforta
yes or no? Right, It's like it seems like we've
see some some glimpses and go away. But hopefully that
series in San Francisco, the break physical mental will get
(30:17):
him till he needs to be because obviously he doesn't
have to carry the offense. There's enough guys on top
to do that, guys in the bottom to do that.
But he needs to be better, no doubt, needs to
be better and just carry his load and worry about
the rest. But I'm really hoping and all them in
blue throw out there that it's Michael comes to in
a big way.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Last one for you, Jose, sounds like you got some
action there at the homestead.
Speaker 6 (30:40):
And uh, I got the grand kids here.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Oh is that what it is? I was gonna that
that was gonna be the question. I heard you bang
on the table there, I.
Speaker 5 (30:46):
Heard oh yeah, oh yeah, they're yelling oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
Oh yeah, I've done that before.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
It's not like right, I was gonna say, you got
a pool in the back, like what's going on? What's
what are they doing? So it sounds like they're having
a good times.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
I's regular having a great time of my so I
was like, oh my god, doesn't that But you know what,
what a blessing that is. I have the break and
enjoy the grandkids. And right, my dad listened to his
great grandkids on the radio too.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
There you go, exactly right, exactly right, is grandpa Jose?
Are you are you a take them for ice cream,
take them to the candy store, load them up with sugar,
and then give them back to the parents.
Speaker 5 (31:20):
Is you name it? Yeah? Your name is like, Hey,
great to have you guys. It's nine o'clock, getting old.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Well, enjoy them. We appreciate it. Really looking forward to
hearing you on the call starting tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
Yeah, we too, looking forward to bouncing back to put
the old CD in there and then speak a little
English starting borrow.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Exactly right. We appreciate it, Thanks so much, Jose, Thank
you guys. All right, there you goes, He'll be on
the call right here, am five seventy LA Sports Dodger
sprewers from the Gallpin Motors Broadcast Booth seven ten pm
tomorrow as the second half, the unofficial second half of
the season. We'll get under when we returned out to
(32:01):
Las Vegas. Is he in a wedding dress in front
of the Coca Cola sign? I don't know, but that
Truss is at the Mountain West football meetings or football
media what they call it?
Speaker 5 (32:18):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (32:19):
Are they having one day or are they having two days?
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Two days? He got out there, but although I don't
know if last night was official, he had a dinner
last night and then he had a bunch of stuff
today for their media day, So I think probably both.
You know, a little bit of the high brows stuff
last night. Today's more than nuts and bolts, the press conferences,
the players kind of thing. Because I know he's going
to be back on the air tomorrow, so well, hey,
(32:43):
we'll find out, man, Google not needed be Truss will
share with us what's going on out there and weighing
on some of the stuff that George has been talking
about here today. With all the new surrounding college football
and lawsuits and settlements and nil and collectives, and the
craziness of the off season. So we'll get to all
that next With Pete. I don't know if it's a
hot lap. I don't know if he's at the Australian Begs,
(33:06):
if he's uh in one of those fancy private pools
at the Circa watching Summer League basketball. But Petros is
at the Mountain West Media Day slash meetings, and he
joins us now with George Reister filling in for p
We've been talking a lot of football piece, so I
know you and George is gonna have some fun here.
But what's what's happening in Vegas? What are you up to?
How was last night?
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Last night? Was okay? Hi, George, Hello, Matt, Hello everybody.
Great to be back on the show since yesterday. I
am driving home from the Mountain West meeting slash media Day.
I'm pass State Line. Okay, ran into a rain and
wind storm, but it was it was, it was dusty,
(33:53):
there was okay, yeah, I was. I was nervous behind
the ill of the Tacoma but clearer skies now on
the fifteenth south, headed into Baker and I am looking
forward to seeing somebody with no hope As I drive through.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Yes, that girl has no hope.
Speaker 5 (34:14):
And I spent last night talking to a bunch of
football coaches and ads, and then spent the day spending
a half hour with all twelve of the Mountain West
football coaches and wrapped up with New Mexico and now
I'm on the way out. So it was. It was
(34:35):
enlightening and and good. And everybody's now gearing up for
the Big ten media Day in Vegas coming up next week, of.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Which I will not be a son of a bitch.
Speaker 5 (34:46):
Well, this is what they asked me to do, so
I'm doing it. I did it.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
Now it's over, hey, Petros.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
And there weren't very many quarterbacks at the Big TI
at the Mountain West media days. Why is Why is
that because it used to be like, you know, quarterback
driven and superstar driven.
Speaker 5 (35:06):
Well, I mean, you have new quarterbacks at San Diego State.
Their cornerback left for uh uh I can't remember, but
he went to a different school, maybe Louisville, I don't know.
And then the cornerback at Boise Maddox Madson was a
game manager, you know, for Ashton genty and they were
(35:29):
the best team. UNLV doesn't have a quarterback and they
have a brand new coach, mikey Keen at Fresno is
at Michigan now and not going to start, and so
there was just either transfers or new guys. The number
one player or cornerback in the Mountain West is probably
(35:51):
that guy that kept getting into it with Shador Sanders
the last couple of years. Oh yeah, from Colorado's state.
And you know, I just came for the dinner last
night and the coaches today, The players were all there yesterday.
But yeah, I did not. It doesn't feel like it's
(36:12):
a quarterback league this year, at least at least to
start out there. There is not a big buzz about
who's gonna play QB. The Idaho cornerback went with the
Idaho coach the Vandals down to New Mexico to take
over for Bronco Menden Hall, Nevada. Who's going to roll
(36:33):
with Chubb a Party Rock Party's little brother. So yeah,
but you're right, I did not see. I did not
see anybody in a quarterback kind of kind of vibe
in my time at the Mountain West.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Was there any conversation. We talked to Dan Walkin a
little bit earlier and he wrote a big piece in
the USA today about the lawsuit and the dismissal of
the lawsuit and the settlement and how now everybody's arguing
about the things that we're supposed to be settled and
how collectives can or can't pay, and basically said it's
all a complete s show because they ultimately spent hundreds
(37:14):
of millions of dollars to solve nothing that there is
still no clarity. Was that stuff talked about with coaches
or do they just try to stay away from that
crap because it gives them headaches.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
Well, we're getting closer to the actual games, and coaches
are very interesting. I mean mostly you talk about the
transfer portal and the revenue sharing and what positions they
like to pay the most for. And obviously it's becoming
an NFL model where you pay your cornerback, you pay
(37:46):
your receiver, you pay your left tackle, you try to
pay a safety or corners, and those are the guys
that get paid and everybody else is kind of secondary,
unless unless you're very special tight end or somebody like that,
like George Reister, but I don't. Overall, my vibe was
(38:07):
what is your approach? Some guys approach the portal saying
I want a bunch of guys on the come up
that are FCS starters who have played a lot of snaps.
Other guys like guys that were second string or third
string players at bigger conferences that are looking for a
chance to play FBS football and start. Some guys like
(38:33):
Bronco Mendenhall who's at Utah State, are interested in taking
just enough transfers as necessary and recruiting at the high
school level in the state and feel like that the
administration has the patience to help them with that. But
the one interesting part about that is, I mean, what's
(38:54):
the point of redshirting a guy now? I mean, unless
he's really not ready? You know, why red shirt a
guy when if you end up developing him as a
red shirt, he might leave one year early. I mean,
you're giving him extra time, but he might not necessarily
give you that extra time. So, you know, a lot
of philosophical conversations behind closed doors with coaches about what
(39:17):
their approach is, what they did after last year to
change things or keep things going or improve things, But
not as much about the lawsuits stuff, more about how
do you approach modern college football? How do you create
a team environment, you know that kind of stuff. Do
you take the guy's bowling so they get to know
(39:37):
each other? Do you make them learn all each other's names,
different things of that nature.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Yeah, when we look at the just college football this season,
how much do you think that this season is going
to determine what happens with the college football playoff? Because
obviously Greg Zankee over at the SEC, the Big ten,
Tony Petiti, they're trying to figure out the college football playoff.
(40:03):
Who is going to blink Petros and get and get
their way with the five plus eleven or the four
four two two one.
Speaker 5 (40:12):
I'm not sure. And it's a problem, isn't it. Like
we've talked about this stuff for years, you and I
and and on our show, and Matt and I thought
that as the NCAA got weaker and the TV companies
became stronger, as we've obviously seen happening, that the TV
(40:35):
companies would have the foresight to have a little bit
more uniformity and the TV companies would be able to
get along enough to create something that we can all
kind of stand on as a foundation. Well, uh, they're not.
They're not getting along. There is no foundation and like
(40:57):
you said, it's a tug of war between the playoff format,
between how many conference games you play, between whether or
not you should be able to play a cupcake in
November sez and acc style. And I don't see a
way out right now unless Fox and ESPN get together,
(41:18):
you know, with the powers that be at d NC
double A and make more rules that make this a
little bit more of a of a digestible off season,
so to speak. But uh, I don't have as much
hope as I used to as far as uniformity goes
and all that stuff almost done.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
How much baccarat did you play last night? And how
much money did you win?
Speaker 5 (41:45):
Say that again, Matt, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (41:47):
I said how much baccarat did you play last night?
And how much did you win?
Speaker 5 (41:52):
I did no gambily, absolutely zero. I thought about it.
I went by a Willy Wonka sloppish at the Circa,
which is a really nice Sotelo casino. But I thought
about flipping twenty dollars that my wife gave me before
I went there, because my bank card has been stolen.
As you know, Matt, so I did not, though I
(42:15):
did know gambling. I did have two delicatestants sandwiches at
the delicate testant at circa called Saginaw's, which is a
delicatessant that I truly enjoy. I had a ruben last
night and a turkey and Coleslaw today, So I was
pleased with those choices. And perhaps one would call those
(42:38):
a gamble. But as far as real playing like people
do in Vegas, I did none of that whatsoever. I
did spend time in the circa Founder's Club or Legacy
Club or whatever last night, and it had a bust
of Crekorian, the guy you did the dead guy Birthday
of the Day the other day, and a bust of
(42:59):
Howard Hughes at, a bust of Baron Hilton or whoever. Uh,
you know the different people that built the building, mister Binyon. No, no, no,
Mo Green or hym and Roth. But that was that
was kind of interesting. But no, not a not a
very traditional trip to Las Vegas by most people's standards.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
Well, why did you drive to Vegas instead of flying
to Vegas like like normal?
Speaker 5 (43:25):
Hum, I'm asking myself that now.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
You never ask it on the way there. It's on
the way back when you ask yourself that.
Speaker 5 (43:32):
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I I'm not a flyer.
I'm not a very comfortable flyer. And I've done this
drive before to where, you know, the second my meetings
are over, I can get in the car and leaves,
you know what I mean, as opposed to waiting, you know,
for a car to the airport. And you know, just
kind of I don't. I just don't like that. So yes,
(43:53):
I'm doing it now and hopefully everything goes okay. But
it is a good question, George, and I.
Speaker 1 (43:58):
Will say, you know, the one thing you miss out
on driving your car instead of flying is you don't
get an opportunity to smoke a cigarette in those sweet
smoking rooms at the Las Vegas Stirport.
Speaker 5 (44:11):
Now, if I wanted to smoke, I could pull off
here at Baker you know, light one up at the
bun boy. But you're right, You're right about that. And
I just think about a long drive Matt and I
took to Vegas twenty years ago, Yes, and I thought
we were going to like talk the whole time and
like learn about each other. And really I just listened
to Damian Rice music while staring out the window.
Speaker 1 (44:34):
That's a true story, No, hope, no hope.
Speaker 5 (44:37):
Oh fourteen miles from.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
No Hope exactly, oh eighty.
Speaker 5 (44:42):
One miles from the outlets at Barstow.
Speaker 1 (44:44):
You're gonna see that girl playing in the dirt, and
you're gonna realize that girl's got no hope. That's what
you get in Baker.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
What does you have to look forward to?
Speaker 1 (44:52):
Exactly? Not a damn thing. All right, Well, it'd be
great to have you back tomorrow. P. George is doing
a hell of a job today. It's been really fun.
We got too.
Speaker 5 (45:00):
It's great to hear your voices. And yeah, we'll be
back tomorrow for frog Man Friday. You guys have a
good one.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
Thanks, P. Have a safe drive home. There he goes
prog Man halfway point Lorenzo O'Neil. Later this hour, Quick
Hits Dead and a live guy. We got a top
story coming up next. NFL Football Underway training camp started today.
Harball was in rare form. We promise you will want
(45:27):
to hear if you have not, and I don't know,
you know, unless you're a big big Charger fan, why
you would go seek the Jim Harball press conference today.
But it was twenty seven minutes long and twenty seven
yes and you know, if you cover Harball, you know
when he's about to get on one. It's just from
the opening statement, you're like, oh yeah, settle in everybody,
here we go.
Speaker 3 (45:47):
Did people stop asking questions?
Speaker 1 (45:49):
Oh no, he was on fire. He was on Everyone
was just geeked, laughing, following along stories that took seven
eight different turns before they came to an end, and
people were eating it up. So we'll play you a
little bit of the highlights there, talk some football as
we keep going towards seven pm here on A five
seven eight spores
