Speaker 2 (02:41):
Hello.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
That is James Worthy, ladies and gentlemen, the centerpiece of
our show. One of the greatest lakers of all time,
a Hall of Famer, a man of the people, an
Emmy Award winner, Spectrum sportsnet La our second North Carolina
tar heel. Right of the day, we had the running

(03:03):
back of Marion Hampton on from UNC who just got picked.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
In the first round by the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
But joining us right now, it is the immortal James
Worthy down the street from this word God bless you, James.

Speaker 5 (03:16):
And you know, I'm always getting the phone call from Tim.
Tim said that we're coming on the air and and
you know, two minutes and it's always a phone call.
So it's nice to see you guys, to see nice hat.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
It is great. Thank you. Yeah, I'm thanking it. And hey,
look at this love you guys. Man. This this time
to have some shots.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Do you remember do you remember the last event that
we did with James Worthy? I believe it was at
the Hooters on Figueroa, which is since club.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
That's exactly right. That was like, yeah, fig fifteen years ago. Ya,
Kobe was still playing, Yes for sure. Yeah, it's like
two thousand and nine. I think, I mean, James, maybe
that came in the studio once or twice.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
It's possible, all right, but out with the people drinking
beers and talking like this.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
This is way better than that other place. I can
tell you that. Exactly right, yeah, exactly right. Now. When
we do these, James, obviously we like.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
To talk about the current state of basketball, but we
also like to have, you know, a conversation.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
About the man, the myth, the path, the.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Championships, all the accolades, everything that you've done in your
illustrious Hall of Fame retired number hanging from the raptors
at Crypto dot Com arena career. So why don't we
start because Petros mentioned Amario Hampton was here at North
Carolina and something that we've never asked you. Every week
that you've been on, we have never asked this question.

(04:46):
And I don't know why the seed was planted, but
did you ever have like a one on one tournament.
Did you guys ever go head to head? You and
Michael Jordan when you were teammates, did you ever play
one on one and how did it turn out?

Speaker 5 (04:59):
If you Yeah, we did, and I think it's documented
and I think we finally admitted to it in one interview.
But you know, Michael Jordan was He wasn't arrogant, but man,
he was full of confidence, right, and so when he
when he stepped on campus, Man, it didn't matter if
it were backgammon, chess, checkers. He hated to lose and

(05:24):
he always sought out whoever the best was. So I
was the best guy on the team at the time.
And one of my famous quotes is, you know I
was better than Michael Jordan for about three weeks. But yeah,
you know, so we would be practicing two hours. I'm tired,
I want to get out of there. I'm walking off

(05:45):
the court and here comes Michael bullying me. He's like,
where you're going, young fella, where you're going? Because he,
you know, he I was the best. He wanted to
measure himself. So I think I beat him the best
of five. I think I'm on three out of five.
And I never played him again, and so I got
it on the record. Yeah, and so, yeah, he's an animal.

(06:07):
I mean I knew he was going to be a
good player, a better baseball player coming out of high school.
And I saw his talent and the raw Dean Smith
helped develop it, and I said, this guy, you know,
he'll be an All Star one day.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
I never knew that. The greatest player I've never knew yet.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
So it wasn't like a statewide legendary thing in North Carolina.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
I mean you were there, My gosh, you guys had
I mean Dean Smith teams.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
So it wasn't like it wasn't like Jesus was coming
to North Carolina to save the university.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
No, it wasn't. You know, we had just lost to
Indiana in nineteen eighty one, so we had Sam Perkins
return to myself, our starting point guard, Matt Doherty, and
then Michael came. And you know an interesting fact, Coach
Smith would not allow freshman to do interviews with any
media or anybody after their first game. So we're ranked

(07:00):
number one in nineteen eighty two and they want to
put the starting five on the cover Sports Illustrated, and
Coach Smith would not allow Michael to be on that.
So if you look at that cover, you'll see four
players and then there's coach Smith. No mj But the
question one more time was.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
It was you know, was he a statewide legend? No,
he was not.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
He was a better baseball player coming out of high school.
In fact, his roommate his freshman year and one of
his best friends, Buzz Peterson, out of Asheville, North Carolina,
was North Carolina State player of the Year in high
school over Michael Jordan and they end up being roommates.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
And good friends. Coach Peterson, yeah, he coached and coached
at Coastal Carolina.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
And a few people so yeah, Michael or Bobo.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
So but man, he was good.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
And you know Coach Smith, you know, really, you know,
that's what's missing in today's you know, college is like
a college coach, those of you who played, you know,
high school to college. You know, in college, his first
job is to rip your little ego out of your heart,
you know what I mean, just rip it out. Have

(08:18):
you settled down? And that's what happened to Michael. And
when he got the science and the fundamentals, with all
that talent, there's no looking back.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
To the pros, and I want to do this in
person so you can see, you know, sincerity, we are
in person, not being a smart ass. Maybe take the
hat off, none of that.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Yeah, that's a good idea. It's a good idea. Let's
pull that off. Yeah, that's yours.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
We talked to you about it before, and you know,
the NBA Finals are going on and something we need
to get off our chest because I always felt.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Like, it's not fair.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
It's not fair that nineteen eighty four, in what was it,
Game two? I think right, game two, you get stuck
with the turnover. Yet if people look at the box,
it's one of the all time great Finals performances that
James Worthy has. And in that series, you shoot, what
do you shoot? Seventy percent from the field? Yeah, average
damn near thirty points per game. Like, there was a

(09:13):
guy coming off the bench that that was turning the
ball over like five six times a game, and that
dude never gets anything. They always put it back on you,
And I'm like, that's not fair. Not with the performance
that you put in in eighty four, having to play
forty seven forty eight minutes dragging McHale or bird up
and down, the floor defensively good time, you know what
I mean. And yet people point to that game too.
That's the same stupid highlight they run over and over

(09:35):
and over and it's BS man, it is complete BS.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
You know, look, I thank you for that, because you know,
there were whispers in eighty four that you know, James
Worthy might be MVP of the series.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
You know, it was. It was that good.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
And then the one thing that still wakes me up
at night, and I don't think it was that that
we lost the series, because we went on seven games
and had some other miserable things that happened and running
the time out and things of that nature. But the
one thing that wakes me up at night still is
that damn pass to Gerald Henderson. And we had already

(10:16):
achieved what we wanted to do. That back then the
format was two two one one, So we were coming
out of Phoenix, uh and the Celtics were waiting for
us like they had like five days. And we won
game one, right that was our goal was to get.
But we had Game two right there that would have
been my fourth. People forget the success that you had

(10:40):
when they just remembered that one pass.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
Douse, they run the damn pass over and over and
over again. Yeah. I think you were eleven to twelve
from the field in that game. Yeah, I was hot. Man.
I never think about the past ever. I gotta be honest,
you know.

Speaker 5 (10:52):
I can you know, I almost blocked it. I can
still feel like just a little bit of the skin
of the basketball on my fingertips. Man.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
And every time I see Joe Henderson, I just go
the other way. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
You know, it's interesting watching the NBA Finals, And I
got to be honest, I was pretty darn entertained by
Game three, watch a whole thing, And that's not usually
my nature, you know, to watch a whole thing and
and be into the game when I didn't really have
a rooting interest or anything like that. And the one
thing I noticed is that guys were getting tired, like
getting tired early and and and needing to be on

(11:28):
the ground for a couple like a soccer game. Was
it like that in your day? I mean, you guys
played so hard. Was the finals really the the intensity
level that high? And And do you see it when
you do you see a similar thing when you watch
this guy.

Speaker 5 (11:42):
It was a grind. It was a grind, a lot
more physical back then. Guys, it was it was a
big man's game inside out. Like we only had two
three point shooters. Pat Raley only allowed guys who shot
like thirty five percent, and that was Cooper and Bron
everything else. When it's a Kareem or myself double team,

(12:05):
then we throw it out. But the grind was and
this is what these young players have no idea. It's
waking up at five o'clock to catch a seven o'clock flight.
But you're on Eastern Airlines. I many if you remember.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Eastern Airline, remember easines Western Airlines.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
So we flew commercially at least you get.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
Yeah, in the Fourth Road they had those ashtrays there,
but that's what we had to fight against. And uh,
you know, you know, could you imagine like walking down
the you know, the terminal and you know, uh, there's
Lebron James standing in line for.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
A hot dog, and you know.

Speaker 5 (12:45):
There's Kareem mount dul Jabbar over there putting a quarter
in one of those little TVs trying to watch TVs.
That's what it was like. And so you know, we
we would, you know, it was it was tough to fly. Uh,
we didn't have the science and the medical information that
these guys have. Now, we didn't have load management. We

(13:06):
couldn't even take practice off, you know, and we're playing
a lot of minutes and you know, the wearing tear. Yeah,
that was that was the eighties, and so by the
time you got to the finals, it was all about
mind over matter and who was in the best shape.
And we were in really good shake from the start.
That was one thing that pat Riley demanded. So it
was all about you know, and we had we had

(13:27):
the players, but it was all about, you know, who
could mentally win the war.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
How about this making sure to speak to that that
it does not go to a game seven when they
finally slayed the dragon in nineteen eighty five Game six,
here's your minutes numbers people for the Lakers one hundred eleven,
one hundred victory over the Celtics. Magic Johnson thirty six minutes,
Kareem abdul Jabbar thirty five minutes Byron Scott thirty five minutes,

(13:54):
Kurt Rambis's punk ass twenty six minutes. Wow, Yeah, James
Worthy in that game six forty five minutes, eleven of
fifteen from the field, twenty eight Lebron James.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
You know, forty five minutes, this guy get tired.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
You don't get tired when you're sitting down. You don't
get tired when you're on the court.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
About ten more minutes than Kareem Damn.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
Yeah, those were some fun times. Man, you wanted to
be on the court. Hey, never get tired.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
What do you think it is about, because, like you said,
it was a totally different thing, But it's a time.
It's like the WWE or F We don't remember the guy.
I mean, people don't think about the guys wrestling today.
We all know Ho Ho and the Ultimate Warrior and
you know Randy Macho Man Savage.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
There's something about the NBA and that time.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
And it's not not just if you grew up in
that time, it's everybody knows about it.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
And the league was so much different.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
You guys weren't making generational to where like no one
in your family has to work for two centuries.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
Kind of wealth.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Why do you think it resonates so much with What
was it about that time that resonates so much with people.

Speaker 5 (15:09):
It was a brand new product, in my opinion, and
that product became more global than ever. I remember commissioned O'Brien.
I had him one year. My second year. Commissioner Stern
came in with fresh new ideas. The NBA was emerging
from the ABA, and a lot of guys were you know,

(15:33):
merging into the NBA. And the NBA, you know, really
didn't have a lot of policies, didn't have a drug policy,
that was a big problem with coming out of the seventies,
didn't have a television contract.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Really.

Speaker 5 (15:43):
Commissioner Stern came in and had a big contract with
CBS that gave us visibility for all, you know, for
all our at least you know, Sunday games and a
lot of games. Team started to get you know, contracts
with local television, prime ticket, prime ticket, you know, So that.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Started to happen in a lot of cities. And then.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
We had Boston and Lakers who had history, the Lakers
had never beaten them, Jerry West, Will Cham and Elves
and Baylor. Then you had Bird and Magic and you
had blue collar style and Boston which was everyone was
used to that. Then you had a brand new style

(16:26):
with Magic Johnson in showtime and it was kind of
radical too. You had you had the you know, the
white kid from French Lick and you had East Lansing,
so it was a lot of stuff going on, especially
when you went back to Boston so that you know,
I remember playing them four times and preseason, my my, my,

(16:47):
I believe it was my second year eighty four, and
I was like, wow, this is crazy, and it was
so intense. It was like playoffs already, but it was
it was it was just the history and the fact
that the Lakers had never beaten them. They had dominated us.
And so dak Ralvey started up along with other you

(17:09):
know teams. Utah was good with Stockton and Malone. You know,
Dallas was pretty good. So the league started to get
more popular. And but I think the eighties was when
it was really born and having the Celtics and the Lakers,
you know, play that many times. Then Detroit comes along
bad boys. Uh, we started to get some international players

(17:32):
over here. Star Trek, I think you started to get
more popular globally.

Speaker 4 (17:36):
Oh and you put it on the Pistons Finals MVP
James Worthy brought to you by Bord to get into
your local Southern California board dealers. Help support board continue
to help with donations to help our community forward. Motor
company from America for America, James, were they going to
be with us for another second little segment about the Lakers?

Speaker 2 (17:55):
And then we're gonna let him go.

Speaker 4 (17:59):
That's not have to giveaway release and we have to
give away. We have to ask him about his fishing background.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
That's right. I'm sure he's a fisherman. Should we give
something away real quick before we go to break do it?
You know what living spaces?

Speaker 4 (18:10):
How about a five hundred dollars gift card to living Spaces?
Five hundred bucks, James Worthy? What are you doing with
five hundred bucks to living Spaces? What would I buy?
What would you buy? What do you need from living Spaces?
What does the Worthy compound need?

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Right now?

Speaker 5 (18:27):
It's funny you ask, because I was just at Living
Spaces about three weeks ago. Come on, and I'm working
with my good friend to your right, who's taking the fisture,
Dave Wise, Dave and George Lee. I just got a
dining room table and six chairs one of my favorite stores.
So for it's maybe a few pillows or something for that.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
Look at that living space?

Speaker 2 (18:52):
All right? Why two day giant to night living space?
All right? Here we go, five hundred dollars gift card.

Speaker 4 (18:59):
You can have the same dining room set as James
Worthy if you shop at Living Spaces take it number
five eight, six to seven, eight to seven eight.

Speaker 2 (19:11):
Who needs furniture? Are you here? To seven eight?

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Oh? I know you're out there somewhere five eight six
two seven eight. We'll go to break come back, keep
it going with James Worthy. Stick around. We're live on
location at the Elsie Gundos.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
There we go on a winner.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
Get up here, get your dining room table set.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
We've made it even easier to take LA Sports with
you this summer.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
Make AM five to seven eight or your favorite AM
five seventy LA Sports podcast a preset on the iHeartRadio
app using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Road Trip all summer with LA Sports back live on location.

Speaker 4 (19:54):
It is the Rock and Bruise and el Segundos centerpiece
of the show is appropriately in the center of the show.
We have hit the halfway point. We are going until
six pm. We have already talked to Amarion Hampton, first
round pick of the Chargers stud running back out of
North Carolina. We have already talked to Henrik of Barbecues.
Galore was kind enough to come with prizes. Gave away

(20:16):
a gift card and he has got other prizes we'll
be passing out as well. We've been giving away Dodger tickets.
We just gave away the five hundred dollars gift card
to Living Spaces. And I'll be darned if James Worthy
wasn't just there three weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
I could not believe the connection Chris and the connection
to Gallpin just absolutely ridiculous, right, wonderful stuff.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
Math.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
It's been a great day with everybody here at the
Rock and Bros.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
We love it.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
We love having James Worthy here. Ben the Intern is here.
That's Ben the Intern with his lmu Polo and his
roommate also named Ben.

Speaker 5 (20:52):
His dad used to be one of my first producers.
John Specters, Yeah, big game John. And that's Hayden. Hayden
came with them too. They brought a girl, which we appreciate,
you know, try.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
To balance it out a little bitch. Talk radio is guys,
so thank you for doing that. We love James Worthy.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
Before we say goodbye, we got to talk some current basketball,
some of the local basketball. But were you surprised that
Indiana's come back with the big punch. A lot of
people thought that Okac was going to dominate the NBA Final.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Yeah, yeah, it's you know, they've been in this situation before.
I think they had a same scenario with the Denver
Nuggets and they're able to, uh, you know, come back
and win. So they're they're they're they're familiar with this.
But uh, when you're in a seven game series, man,
and it is the finals and you're expected to win,

(21:44):
you had the most valuable player, you know, it's it's
it's a grind. It's not like regular season where you're
you know, you're in New York on a Tuesday, Philly
on Wednesday, take Thursday off, Friday in Boston. You can
be very successful that way, but when you get in
the seven game series, and to me, Indiana's bench has

(22:04):
proven that.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
They are the difference right now Arizona guys.

Speaker 5 (22:09):
And also, you know the way that they are being
physical with Shay is if his cousin that was at
the last who's guarding him. He had a cousin, I
think that might have been the last round that was
guarding him from Canada. But they're playing physical with him.
But the difference is it's Rick Carlisle because he's a

(22:33):
He's an amazing coach. If you just watch, he makes substitution.
But sometimes he'll make a substitution just to see what
his next play is going to be, to see what
the other coach does. And he really knows how to
enroll his players into playing together.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
In that synergy.

Speaker 5 (22:52):
You can just see it through Halliburton, through Siakam, all
the way through their bench. They're really solid. So Oklahoma,
I'm still favorite, but not gonna be easy.

Speaker 4 (23:02):
I'll tell you what you mentioned, Rick Carlisle, heck of
a coach. You know I was a heck of a coach.
Chuck Daily pat Riley h In nineteen eighty eight, James,
I thought we were.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Gonna talk current basketball. That's current enough.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
You're down three games to two, you lose game five,
and rarely do you win the NBA Finals. Yet you
go back to back. It's the year you win the finals, MVP.
What was Chuck Daily doing to try to slow down
Big Game James? And there wasn't a damn thing he
could do about it?

Speaker 5 (23:31):
Boy, it was. It was a three headed monster that
Chuck Daily threw at me. First, he started with a
six' eight wide body looked like the you, know the Refrigerator.
Perry it Was Rick. Mahorn couldn't get around.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
The biggest ass in THE, nba, yes and probably the
world right.

Speaker 5 (23:48):
Now but you know he you couldn't get around. Him
he was very. Savvy you. Know he came up with
the you, know move the, seats pulled the chair, out
pull the, chair and you, know he knew how to play.
Me SO i had to deal with that for about
a quarter and a. Half ONCE i you, know scorched.
Him then they came With. Spider oh, Yeah john.

Speaker 2 (24:14):
Was supposed to. Be, yeah he was supposed to be
the shot.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
Boxer you, know had a lot of, length and so
ONCE i scorched him for about a quarter and a,
half then they came with the toughest DEFENDER i ever
been up, against and that Was Dennis. Robbins fourth quarter
was Always. Dennis uh his foot speed matched my foot.
Speed he was, quick he was, strong he was a
great rebounder and really a weird, dude.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
You, know just to go up.

Speaker 5 (24:38):
Against you, know he'd have you distracted by little things
he used to, do like come up in peach of
ass or something with just some crazy. Stuff and then
you're just looking at him for ten. Minutes but but you,
KNOW i Told isaiah one, TIME i, said who else
you got doing the?

Speaker 2 (24:58):
Timeout?

Speaker 5 (24:58):
