Red Sox here in Los Angeles, and David Vasi joined us a little bit
earlier. He will have off nightDodger Talk right after we signed off around
seven pm tonight. And we gota show in Rock and Bruise and El
Seganda on Friday. And the mostimportant part about that is that Eric Musselman's
(01:11):
coming. Brandan Rice is coming fromthe Chargers. The rookie Colin Coward is
not booked, but Gene Simmons isgonna be on the phone. But on
the telephone even more impactful. Maybeif you're thinking about coming out, we
got live music. It's gonna bea hell of a show. The PDJ
trio perhaps today heard him working ona request that was submitted earlier in the
(01:34):
week. He kind of a weirdsong. I don't know the PBJ trio
will be out. I was like, maybe I shouldn't have requested, but
whatever, they'll figure it out.You know what, it can't sound worse
than the national anthem from last night, right, so the bar has been
set low. I was drunk. You're good and you know what, if
they're drunk, good for them. They're sixteen and seventeen years old. What
the hell, it's gonna be agreat time out there live music. They
(01:56):
will not be drunk rock and Brucewould not stand for that, but you
may we will have Geene Simmons onthe phone. Muscleman, uh is Steve
Sacks? I believe Steve Sacks isnow coming out, right? Wasn't he
just added too, let's go unbelievable? So Steve Sachs, Eric Musselman Brennan
Rice, rookie charger, thirteen touchdownsfor the Trojans last year, all on
site and in person, and agreat backdrop the rock and Bruce el Segundo.
(02:23):
A number of folks to thank forthis one, for helping us put
on the summer parties. This ourthird of six p that's right, Matt.
Thank you to Ito nz oi OchaJapanese green tea for the people.
A big thank you to Sweet James, Sweet James Bergener, the Dens.
(02:44):
Bess what about those what about thosenooners? Matt, we could not be
more excited or proud to puff ourchests out and point out that High Noon
Hertzeltzer wants a piece of the Petrosand Money show and it's summer tour.
Why because that high Noon vodka heistis what we demanded. We said,
hey, high Noon, guys, you ought to think about vodka iced tea
(03:04):
and they were like, that's agreat idea. And now they've made real
vodka and realized tea with no carbonationand no added sugar, and they just
knew we had to get out onthis. So thank you to high Noon
for being part of this. Youknow, we got a lot of advertisers.
But you'd thinking, with what we'vedone for people, you know,
and especially MODELO right, that wewould have a lot more. You'd like
to think, you'd like to think? And what about our other friends,
Matt oh, chef meriito the seasoningsin the canister, but the chef is
(03:29):
in you. Barry, our dearfriend, Barry's tickets dot Com. Let
Barry hook you up. And obviouslyyou know all too well. Pee about
prize picks. That's right, prizepicks. I love it a big fan.
And not to mention your selfkow tellYoda dealers. Visit your local dealer
today. All right, it istime for the final hour. Fun fat
(03:51):
it's fun in effect, it's yeah, we're three fun fun facts. Only
two athletes in the history of theOlympics have won gold medals at both the
Summer and the Winter Olympics, andone of them really should not qualify no
offense. Gillis Grotstrom of Sweden, but won the golden figure skating at the
(04:13):
nineteen twenty Summer Olympics, and figureskating moved to the Winter Games in twenty
four so one and again in twentyfour and twenty eight. However, that's
not Gillis's fault though, No it'snot. You know, technically you're still
there, you still won, sowe tip our cap to you. But
American Eddie Egan, this is whatwe're talking about. One gold in boxing
(04:33):
in nineteen twenty at the Summer Games, and then won gold in the nineteen
thirty two Winter Games in the teamBob sled. So there is your is
your guy the eigster ed gotty.Yeah, it's gonna be a sprinter,
strong legged guy for the Bob slid. Right. You figure, well,
I think he just punched the backof the Bob sled before he jumped in.
(04:55):
He was the boost. He wasthe donkey punching back. Guy's exactly
right. Enough. People can't believeJamykahama, Bob's linteaquickets. Everybody toms quickets.
I'll make it quick, y'all.Yeah. And by the way,
(05:17):
that is a live sound of theDustin may esophagal blowbong. Terrible people,
terrible. Oh, this is sad. Joe Jellybean Bryant died the Hall of
Famer Kobe Bryant's father. He wassixty nine. Only He played parts of
(05:42):
eight seasons in the NBA with theSixers, Clippers, and Rockets average eight
points, four rebounds six hundred tosix career games. Played a decade overseas
in France and Italy. Many peoplesay that's why Kobe was so polished with
the international guys. He started coachingin ninety two as the head coach for
the Sparks for parts of three seasons. I did not know that. I
(06:04):
do remember that vaguely. I donot remember that in the slightest. It's
before Plaski was like a Fisher's gottabe fired. He also watching it.
I love it. He coached withother places US, Japan, Thailand,
with other professional squad said very sadand obviously bad. Bad tragedy has struck
(06:27):
that family too much, and terrible, terrible news. The Summer League is
still going. We talked about itearlier. The Lakers are winless, zero
and five. They will play twicemore guaranteed Tomorrow and Thursday. They host
the Hawks, and then they willplay the Calves and that will determine where
they end up in the Summer Leaguetournament. Remember, you can win the
(06:50):
Summer League and hoist a banner likethe Kings did. A couple of years
ago when they won the Summer Leaguetournament. So Bob a little concerned because
like the tail scar thing, youknow, it's like, is that the
Dodgers version of the championship Championship playof the Yeah? Is that like the
Dodgers in season banner this year?In the fact that the Oscar won,
(07:12):
the kind of is right a littlebit? We have a we have the
Clipper guy here, Matt, youknow, I mean, don't you think
it's only proper that Adam tells methe function bucks tonight. Don't you think
he should read the Clipper News andthe quick hit? What do we got
going on? Yeah? Well Iwasn't looking at what's him put in there,
(07:42):
but I do know this. Whatdo we got? Jordan Miller his
thirty six points in Game one backon Friday Night against the Denver Nuggets,
most by a guy in Summer Leagueso far this season. They called that
up with twenty one points against Brooklynon Sunday. So there is a little
bit of excitement around Clipper Nation fromone of their younger players. And by
younger, I mean he's turning twentyfive by the end of this season,
(08:05):
but he will be just in hissecond year, so they drafted an older
player last year he was a fiveyear guy. Yeah, ended up at
Miami at the very end, madea run to the final four. But
Jordan Miller, Kobe Brown another guyto watch, and then of course Cam
Christie, brother of Max Christie, who has shown off a pretty smooth stroke.
(08:26):
Tim Lagler was on the call forthe last game freaking out about it.
But he does look like he hasa skill set, at least from
distance already. That can translate tothe part this is about the Lawrence Frank
Kawhi confusion. Oh, yeah,I'm sorry, No, it's all right.
What do you think about that there? Yeah, Larry Frank is not
happy about them booting Kawhi from theteam. Yeah, it looked like they
(08:48):
were sticking up for their guy, because it looked like Team USA put out
a press release that said it wasa collective effort. They all talked about
it, and then they decided tonot bring back Kawhi Leonard or to not
have him after the third day.It sounded like a training camp they made
that decision. Lawrence Frank was therefor the first two days. He said
(09:09):
Kawhi Leonard looked good. They werevery disappointed. He emphasized that multiple times
yesterday at the press conference. SoI think Kawhi Leonard is very disappointed.
Lawrence Frank was sticking up for him. I understand that part of it.
Also the part where some of thefans didn't want him playing in the Olympics
because he didn't play the last fouryears or wasn't able to finish the season
the last four years for the Clippers. So it's a little bit controversial,
(09:33):
I guess, but I'm not tooworried about Team USA still having a chance
to win gold. Well, we'llsee about that. I mean, Canada
and friends are gonna have something tosay about it. Roth Lavinians Rob Manford
talked about your robots today, Matt, how about that. He said that
it is a viable option that anautomatic strike zone will be implemented in twenty
(09:54):
twenty six. No decision has beenmade official. He was also asked about
the players in the twenty twenty eightLA Olympics. He said, I remain
open minded when you're in LA,it's an opportunity we need to think about.
He acknowledged player interest and said thathe remains in talks with LA.
Twenty eight chief Casey Wasserman was therobot umps are coming, and they're coming
(10:18):
in twenty six. What did BryceHarper have to say about it? Matt
He said that he has an ideato improve the umpiring in major leagues.
Pay him more, have them behindthe plate more. If you're a really
good umpire, you should get paidmore, and you should umpire more than
one game per week behind the plate. Even if we don't have the challenge
system, if the better umpires arebehind the plate all the time, that's
(10:39):
better for baseball. He said. He's fine with the automatic ball strike system
with challenges, but it's got tobe done the right way. Well,
look now that Angel Hernandez is outof the game, you've already upgraded that
position considerably percentage points. It's alreadybeen it's already been, already been proven.
Country singer Ingrid Andres, who butcheredthe anthem for the derby last night.
(11:01):
I'm going on a three day bender, said she was drunk. I'm
not going to bs, y'all.I was drunk last night. She sat
on social media that she's going torehab. You got drunk. You're at
an All Star game. You probablyhad a pregame party. They were serving
up some high noon vodka's teas. You had two of them thinking it was
like a Seltzer. Instead, you'resaying, getting drunk one night, does
(11:22):
it warrant you going straight to rehab? Don't think you need to go to
rehab. Well, we don't knowwhen when the other time she drank fair
point, Maybe she's just a drunk, because she could be a lush.
She could just be you know, everybody has their first drink, but everybody
in a lush. You know,I'm going on a three day bender.
Forty nine ers All Pro wide receiverBrandon Ayuk from Arizona State as officially requested
(11:46):
a trade after an off season ofunsuccessful attempts to reach an extension. They
might not give it to him.Was the uh? Oh? Was that
Dalcam? Who made that noise?Oh? Are you yeah? Real?
Thank you, Adam. I've beenkennon there too. Those guys very similar,
(12:11):
yes, very similar, But Aukmost resembles Dulcon most definitely. The
Georgia football team has said seven guysarrested on driving related charges since they won
a title in twenty twenty three, and there was a crash that killed a
player and a staff member. Headcoach Kirby Smart says players are being disciplined
by the team, and they're alsoreceiving fines from Georgia Football's nil collected.
(12:35):
I just don't say anything, coach. That's what your answer is. Don't
say anything. We watched we watchedRed Asphalt. We made them watch it
like the clockwork or seven times.I put tooth picks in their eyelids.
I forced them to watch it overand over. We have a team of
(12:56):
comely girls that pick up the guysdrive him around. Right. You would
think you would think that's what Kiffinhad going and that didn't work either.
He definitely did not. Tiger Woodsaid it was difficult to turn down a
chance to be the captain of nextyear's US Ryder Cup team. He had
to, though, because of hiscommitments to the PGA Tour. I hey
(13:20):
fu PGA Tour. He responded tocalling montgomery suggestion that he should retire as
a pass champion. I'm exempted untilI'm sixty. Colin's not. He's not
a pass champion personal, he said, Hey, guess what, Colin,
You're a bitch money, you fatass. You look like an old lesbian.
(13:41):
Shut your face. You're a bitch, that's what you are. And
those are your crickets. And we'llbe back with Dino Ebel, the star
of last night. Who needs tosee the All Star Game when you can
bask in the glory of yesterday.Next Aim is happening and the Dodgers will
(14:05):
not be back in action until Friday. Bud David Vase, no rest for
the weary off night Dodger Talk fromseven until eight pm tonight after this fancy
little four hour show. Pe that'sright, Matt. He might have Jake
Peevey, but we got Dino Ebel, that's right. Hero to the people,
sand Produce Finest and Dino Ebel,a lifetime of the Dodger organization.
(14:31):
Pretty much was the man pitching TeoScar last night when the very first Dodger
ever won the home run derby.Take that, Jock, the Great Tino
Evil, Dodger third base coach andWorld Series champion joins us on the Southern
California Toyota neither celebrity hotline on thisday during the All Star break. Thank
(14:52):
you for taking out the time, coach. We sure appreciate it. How
are you? I'm great? Thankyou so much much and just relaxing here,
get ready to go to the AllStar Game. Just give us a
little bit of an idea of whatit was like last night, how much
fun that was for you. You'vehad a lifetime on the sport and so
many great experiences. How will youremember last night? It was a special
(15:18):
night. And like I said, last night, after the you know,
after the derby, we I trulyenjoyed it because of you know, watching
Hernandez, you know tail when thewhen the when Bobby Wit hit the ball
off the wall, and just Isat behind him just to see the expression
on his face and when he stoodup and the arms went up and the
family was all right there, andhe looked up into the stands and gave
(15:41):
a big shout out to all ofhis other family members that are here with
us at the All Star Game.It was special for me. That's that's
why I do these home run derbys, because it's never been about me.
You guys know that it's always beenabout the player, and it's always an
honor getting asked to do it.But my job was solely to try to
get this an these pitches that youknow where Taoska wanted it, and I
(16:03):
tried my best, and he whenthe lights came on when we needed him
to show up. That's what Isaid last night. He showed up in
a big way. Hey, coachIce, water in your veins, man,
I mean, you have got toplace those balls perfectly. In this
year with a new format, youget those bonus pitches and I how much
stress if any like you said, you're not new to this. You've done
(16:26):
it for a number of Dodgers inthe past, but kind of dude,
people aren't giving you enough credit. That's a lot of pressure trying to place
those balls perfectly. Well, youknow, you know, you know I
don't look at his pressure because thisis what I do. I love throwing
batting practice. I do it everyday for a long time. And you
know, the opportunity that I've hadchances to throw in the derby, you
(16:48):
know, I didn't see nothing,I didn't hear nothing. All I saw
was tail and the catcher. Youknow, I'd block everything out, and
you know, and it's it washot and humid inside, you know,
in the stadium at the time.I don't know if you noticed, but
I was kept bouncing the ball, you know, on the on the ground
there with h you know, thepitching mound, because if I kept the
ball in my hand out my itwas just so much moist and water on.
(17:12):
Yeah, and I was a littlebit slippery. That's why there was
times I was yanking the ball onthe outer half. But the game plan
was for tail, and I waswhen when he kind of dropped his shoulders,
that's when he wanted me to fire. So uh, that was the
game plan going in first round. He wanted it more up and up and
middle. And then after we gotpast the first round, I locked in
(17:33):
and he said, just throw itdown the middle and let me do do
it. I know, you know, my best is just try to launch
this ball and pull a ball onthe left side. So that's what the
game plan was going. You know. Beyond the first round, it seemed
like he had a lot of welli'll call it help, A lot of
people that were offered advice. Weheard Vlad Guerrero told him out a shot.
I think it was a show heythat told him what stopped trying to
(17:53):
pull go a little bit more leftcenter. A lot of people kind of
spent advice towards tail. Huh,Yes, it was and you know,
Taylor's got some tremendous power to rightcenter. That's where he usually you know,
hits his home runs. But inthese derbies you want to try to
pull the ball down the lines. It's a little bit shorter. But yeah,
it was awesome to see show Heyand all the other guys there with
(18:15):
Freddie and you know, Will Smithand some of you know, Tail's buddies
from the other teams, but littleFlad Junior watching him grow up in the
game when I was with the Angelswith Lass Senior and seeing him, and
it was great. Just it's alwaysan experience for me. But the thrill
that I get is just after thefact and watching families and friends and smile
(18:37):
and enjoy, you know, pumpand fist. And to get back to
what you said on the new rules, it's it's a little different now because
if you miss it counts as apitch, and you know, you have
the three minutes or forty baseball. So I do like that, and I
think the players like it. Theydon't you know, they don't get worn
out of fasts, so hopefully theycan stick with that game plan. The
Great Dino Evil is our guest. He never gets war, you know here
(19:00):
in the way you described the scenelast night, and maybe it's because of
a Dodger and somebody we know abouthad the success. But it feels like
these guys are still kind of ableto reset a little bit, even though
they're at the All Star Game.It feels like a different, more laid
back vibe because it feels like youguys need a break. Yeah, well,
(19:22):
yeah it is. You know,it is All Star time and you
know the rest of the teams backhome, and you know, these guys
they're special. They get selected tobe here. And Tale last night,
I'll tell you what I mean.I've thrown in four Derby's, you know,
the Vlat Senior and seven, andthen I threw the pool Hooles and
Jock and then Tale last night, and you know all of them are locked
in. But I saw something inTayl's eyes last night. Once we got
(19:45):
past the first round, I said, you know what, this guy's gonna
get it, and uh, hewas ready for the moment. And all
all I kept looking at was thatface of his and he was zoned in,
locked in. And uh, youknow I always used the expression the
bright light, and when the brightlights came on last night. He slowed
the game down. He let theball come to him and all he did
was just does what he does bestis pull that ball and hit it out
(20:08):
a part. How are you surprisedhow quickly he assimilated to the Dodgers' clubhouse.
He seems like like not one of, but the most popular guy in
the clubhouse already. Yeah, youknow, not really. We heard a
lot of great things. You know. That's why Andrew in our front office
and you know, Brandon Gomes, they acquired this guy. He's had presence,
he's everyone in around the league knows. This guy's a great man,
(20:32):
a great person off the field. And we knew that right handed bat in
that lineup was going to help us. And you know, we talked a
lot in spring training and I said, hey, listen, just be tail.
And you know, you go outthere and you play at outfield position
either and left or right, andour fans are gonna they're going to love
you. And that's what he's doing. He's playing baseball. He's he's really
calm and cool. He's a funnyperson. All the guys love him,
(20:53):
and it fits so well in thatclubhouse. You know, there's a lot
of expectation, no doubt around thisyear's Dodger team, around every Dodger team,
there's no doubt about that. Butat the same time, no matter
what season it is, there's goingto be adversity. Can you talk about
balancing these things out as a coachand when you talk to these guys,
(21:15):
because there seems to be a lotof adversity right now, just with injuries
and things of that nature. Yeah, yeah, you're right, and it's
you know what, there's always likeyou said, there's gonna be bumps in
the road. But as coaches,we're the ones that got to keep the
steady face. We're the ones that'sgot to be positive every single day.
We believe in our team. Weknow right now we don't have a you
(21:36):
know, a full man, healthyroster, but you know what, guys
are getting other opportunities to step upand help us win. So as for
myself and I know our staff thinksthe same way is we go in every
day. We got the same look. And I remember a long time ago,
Tommy Lasorda told me, Dino,if you guys lose ten in a
row or you win ten in arow, when you walk into that clubhouse,
(22:00):
the players have to see the samelook. And that's exactly what I've
never forgotten was when he said thatyou just got to be the we're the
leaders, and when we go outthere and we're showing panic in our face
and the players are going to seeit, but we're not. You know,
Dave and our staff are great. We've been through this before. So
we're just going to keep our headsup and we're going to move through this
and at the end, we're goingto be where we want to be.
(22:22):
Uh, you're not that old,but you know, you've been in baseball
a long time, I think longenough to maybe be able to have an
idea of why it is what itis, or if we're just kind of
reacting in our prisoners in the moment. It feels like a lot of people
get hurt in baseball now, justfrom when I was a kid and watching
it, I'd never remember. Andit's not just the Dodgers, it's every
(22:42):
team. What do you think itis? Do you know, like,
what do you think it is thatit's leading to so many injuries in a
in a non contact sport. Yeah, you know, that's the that's the
million dollar question because you know, every you know, when we were playing
in the old days was uh,you know, we didn't have what we
have in today's world. You know, younger kids, all the kids are
(23:04):
in travel ball. They're lifting weightsnow sooner. They're getting bigger, stronger,
faster at a real early age.And you know what, I don't
I'm not smart enough to know this, but I know, uh, you
know, when we get them atour level, they're just big. They're
big kids. And you know,I have two sons, like everyone knows,
and you know, Brady sixty fourand Trey six foot and they already
(23:25):
weigh one eighty and one one ninetyand they just they're always out there playing,
but they they just do the agilitystuff and I control the weights.
We don't we don't lift heavy,we don't do anything. Because I'm seeing
it in baseball where these guys are. You know, they're real big and
massive, and you know they pullmuscles quicker. But you know what,
we got guys in our organization thatare going to figure this out or through
(23:45):
the baseball world that uh, youknow, why are guys getting hurt so
much so they're throwing harder? Likeeverybody sees it. You know, they're
everybody starting pitchers ninety four to ninetyseven guys coming out of the bullpenner ninety
seven to one hundred plus, Soinjuries are gonna happen. But yes,
there are happening more than used tobe. You mean, squad four hundred
(24:07):
plus pounds at fifteen isn't cool?I mean it feels pretty cool. The
great Edawanda, Eagles, Brady andTrey champions mentor in the baseball world to
all, and really the unselfishness ofDino ebl and the way he serves and
gives to the Dodge Organization and theWest Coast baseball world every day is really
(24:29):
something. It's a marvel and whatgreat energy, because the baseball season's a
grind. Thank you for joining us, Dino. Enjoy your time in Texas.
It's hot and we'll see when youget back. All right, guys,
always the pleasure being on and thankyou. We'll be back with more
great sports talk, great stuff fromDino Evil, a fabulous man and mentor
(24:51):
to the people lansing the boil ofgreat sports talk, all great sports talk
long. That's right, four hourshows yesterday, today, tomorrow, the
day after and then our big ElSegundo Petrosen Money Tour stop number three on
Friday at the Rock and Bruse. There'll be a lot of podcast on the
(25:12):
iHeartRadio app, or you can streamthat show on Friday live on you Tube.
A big thank you to Dino Ebeltaking time out. We played that
twice because it was so sweet aboutTeal scar and David Vasse joined us today
and Mark Medina. A lot ofgreat sports talking, not to mention top
stories, the Bachelorette Report, localKnowledge. It's all there on the iHeartRadio
(25:37):
app for your smartphone. You know, Matt, I just can't believe what
we've accomplished so far with all theseshows. O. It is something I
don't know how we do it.It is remarkable. It is impossible to
have projected yet four four hour showsthis week, one three to six,
and we are expected to carry alive in person audience and El Sagun though
(26:00):
it's Mayberry, my man. Isaw a guy pushing his son on a
swing set. And I don't knowhow you guys aren't distracted out here for
three hours with all this beauty andall this familial action around you. I
don't know how you do it NormanRockwell, Mamianna Bromo Fish and Bowls.
I never said anything like it.You guys know this place existed. Yes,
well, all right, dead guyBirthday of the Day. I remember
(26:22):
when Mike Golett or Bob Golic throwa guy through the window at the Sticking
Stock. Yeah, we should haveowned that place. And it does look
it does look desolate. And droveby it just the other day. I'm
my way to the airport. Itis time for British News. For your
dead guy Birthday of the Day.It's time for PMS, British News,
(26:42):
United Kingdom, English News. It'stime for British News. I thought you'd
think this was interesting. Matt Ladyeve Balfer, Okay, Lady eve Balfer.
Evelyn Eve is the founder and shewould have been one hundred and twenty
six years old today, the founderof a movement that still finds very much,
(27:04):
maybe more popularity than ever today andthat movement is the organic movement.
Yes, well, well you areyour organic movement. Show record Where's My
Farming music? Where we go?This is music about farming. She is
the reason that people want their foodgrown and the soil without the help of
(27:26):
deep, god damn durbical, influential, aristocratic family or dad was an earl,
not like one eight hundred call earlwhen you have to throw up?
Oh right, earl shod Yeah,Not like earl shah, I'm all paying
any car for ninety nine ninety ninerhy No like the Earl of Sandwich.
(27:51):
Her uncle was a former prime minister, so influential family. At the age
of twelve, she decided she wantedto be a farmer. And she was
the first pull to study for adiploma in agriculture at any English university,
and the one she went to wasreading in Reading College in the UK.
(28:14):
And then she farmed. What doyou do after you learn to farm?
Matt? You farm using you know, I'm a provider. I provide using
her inheritance. She bought a farmin Suffolk near Meghan Markle's house of Usher,
and she launched experiments farming side byside with the chemical based farming and
(28:38):
the organic side by side, andthe very first long term side by side
