It's still four oh five, five past four. We're punctual,
p We're live at Dodger Stadium. We got Dodgers Reds
coming up just after five forty pm. He pitched a
gym yesterday and he's on headset right.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Now, joining us right now. One of the greatest pictures
of his generation. We've watched his entire career here in
Los Angeles. We try not to be too associated with
David Vasse and the Brad Paisley lyrics that he yells
at him every day. But joining us right now on
yours Southern California Toyota Dealer Celebrity hotline is the one

(01:21):
and only Clayton Kershaw Live from the Dodger dugout on
this beautiful we just won't be defeated Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
What's cracking? Clayton, Thanks for doing it. We appreciate it absolutely.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Guys, just give us a little overview of this August.
I mean, it's been absolutely lights out for you. How
good do you feel right now? I'm usually a pitcher
this time of year doesn't feel that great, but it
looks like you're feeling great.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
I'm just pitching on the right day. You know, the
offense decides to show up for me, so it's awesome.
And yeah, it's been fun, man. It's been fun to
be healthy, fun to get out there. And you know,
last night was a good one for us. I only
made it through, but bullpen picked me up. Offense got
a lot of runs for us and another big wins,
so it was fun.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, you say you only made it through five, but
that's that's kind of been rarer on this run, Clayton.
We've seen you get into the six. We've seen you
get past the six kind of how Yeah, I mean,
And I brought this up with Dave Roberts earlier. I said,
you know, it's so different now versus when you started.
Do you still hold yourself to those you know, early
two thousand in the team standards of I expect to
go seven eight innings like you used to compared to

(02:27):
sort of what we have today with all these specialists.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
Yeah, I mean, no, let's I mean just to be
just to be honest, you know, I think my role
has changed on this team, you know, and I think
and I think I'm okay with that. You know, we
got a lot of guys that can throw the ball
really well and a lot of guys that can go
deep into the games now. So my job is just
to do as best I can, go as far as
I can. And it worked out really well last night.
You know, she hand pitched unbelievable, got us through seven

(02:51):
innings the night before, and then you know we have
an off day tomorrow, so especially with six starters too,
I'm basically I was the Friday night starter for a
while there, you know, I just pitching every Friday, so
they're doing a great job taking care of all of us,
and it's it's been a blast, great group of guys,
and it's been fun, man, it really has.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
That's a college baseball that you never got to play
at day. That's right, it's to be a Friday night starter.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
One thing that we've heard from everybody, because obviously we've
been so impressed by this particular I mean, by so
much you do, but this particular run, and everybody has
the same sort of response is just compete, they say. Great,
But compete's kind of the one thing we hear most.
So if you, if you could share this, what does
it mean to compete for every pitch to you? How
is that working for you that's led to all this success?

Speaker 5 (03:34):
Yeah, I mean that's a great question. I think that's
the equalizer when you're on a baseball field, because you know, nowadays,
we have all these metrics, we have all these iPads,
all these things telling us how great our pitches are.
And I'm not going to be the old, you know,
curmudgeon of a guy saying that's not important, because it
definitely is. If you have good stuff, you have a
better chance of getting guys out. But at the end
of the day, man, it's really just you versus the hitter,

(03:55):
and it's really just you trying to figure out your
best pitches to get this guy out. And baseball can
be as complex as you wanted to, it can be
as simple as you wanted to, and it's really just
figuring out how to read a swing, get a guy out,
make a pitch, and move on to the next guy,
and keep doing it, pitch after pitch until they take
you out. And that's what's so beautiful about baseball. That's
what's so beautiful about pitching, is it really just comes

(04:16):
down to you versu the hitter and whether you get
enough guys out to make a good game out of it.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Two time World champion Clayton Kershaw joining us right now
in the Petrosen Money Show. You've been on a lot
of different Dodger teams, Clayton, I mean, from Puigue to
camp to you know, James Loney, to the guys that
you're playing with. Now, what is the differences in this
team's personality? We know every year is different as opposed
to maybe last year's team, which was obviously very special.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
Yeah, gosh, We've I've been on some interesting teams. Huh.
Just going all the way back, it's been unbelievable. Mean,
we had Manny here for a while, we had Tweg,
we had you know, just so many different personalities all
the way down the list. And you know, what I
think is great about this team is that we have
a ton of superstars, right. We got a lot of
guys Freddie, Mooky, show Hey, Will Smith, all these guys
at the top of our lineup that are just superstar

(05:07):
talents in the game. But I think where we defer
among other teams is that they just are so they're
so team first. And I guess I can't say that
cause I don't know a lot of other superstars, but
it just feels like all these guys are so team first.
They want to do whatever you can. You see it
with Mooky every day playing short stop. You see with
Freddie every day going out there regardless of how he's feeling,

(05:28):
you know, show Hey obviously doing what he's doing pitching
and hitting, which nobody can do. And then Will Smith's
just back out there every day catching. That's the hardest position,
is forts. So we got a lot of guys that
put the team first. We got a lot of superstars
that do that and to have that mindset, you know,
at the top of your roster just filters all the
way through. And we got a lot of guys that
have a lot of fun too, you know, we got

(05:48):
Miggie key K all these guys that are just a
blast to be around. And so it's a good combo. Man,
it's a lot of fun. And you know, I'm the
old guy now, but it's still it's still a ton
of fun around all these guys.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Well, it looks like you're having fun, and it's really
gratifying I think for Dodger fans to see you having
success at this point in your career and really being
able to cheer for you, striking guys out and doing
what they're used to you do it all these years.
When it comes to show hail TONI as a pitcher,
what did you think he was gonna be like around

(06:19):
him in the same staff and what is he like?
Maybe that you thought there was a little different.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
Well, I think when you hear somebody that's going to
pitch and hit, you kind of don't really understand all
of that entails until you see the day to day.
And so for me to see what he has to
do every single day to figure out how to pitch,
and then also, you know, figure out how to get
a hit every night. It's it's remarkable, man, It's just
like it's just it's not for everybody. And then you know,

(06:46):
maybe there's some guys that might be able to hit
and pitch in this game, but not to the level
that he does. It not even close. And so for
him to stay at that level takes so much preparation,
takes so much work, and he's obviously a freak talent, right,
I mean, there's nobody like him. But I've had a
ton of fun getting to see it. I have a
ton of respect for him, not that I didn't before,

(07:07):
just but being able to see it from both sides
is truly amazing. And I like watching him pitch. He's
got good stuff. Man, It's fun. I mean, it's just amazing.
Comes out one hundred, he's got seventeen different pitches, it
feels like, so it's, uh, it's pretty fun to watch
him pitch too.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Do you miss hitting?

Speaker 5 (07:22):
I miss taking batting practice. I don't miss trying to
hit these guys at all, but I miss taking batting practice.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Going back to the pitching, Clayton, and I don't think
you ever got a chance.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
I think you were.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
I don't know, maybe you were spring training with Greg
Maddox because I feel like he was here in like
six right when I actually played with him.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Yeah, I played with him in two thousand and eight.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
It was okay, so there we go. So you did play.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
I'm sure you've seen like the famous quote. I think
it's about, you know, oh, nobody knows a car that's
going seventy or a car that's going ninety. You need
the radar detector to tell you that. And he kind
of talked about that in relation to pitching. But you know,
controlling location and executing your pitches is if you could share,
because you know, we're not gonna talk to Greg, if
you could kind of share with us why that is
the key, at least according to arguably the greatest that's

(08:04):
ever done it, What it is about that and how
that's you know, allowed him to have all that success
and you to have all this success.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
Well, I mean, I think at the end of the day,
like you throw it down the middle of the plate,
the harder you throw, the better stuff you have, the
more you're going to get away with it. But if
you can do that to both sides of the plate
up and down to you're gonna have a ton of success.
And then it's just all relative based on your stuff. Right.
So if you're throwing, you know, eighty nine like I am,
you better be able to hit your spots and you

(08:33):
better be able to do that with a lot of
different pitches. And so I don't always that's not always
the case for me, but recently I've been able to,
you know, mix and match and find both sides of
the plate enough to where you kind of keep the
hitters off balance. And so I think that's the great
thing about pitching is that it's not just a one
size fits all thing. Just because you throw one hundred
miles power doesn't mean you're gonna have a ton of success.

(08:55):
And just because you're able to have command doesn't mean
you're going to have success. It's kind of a combo
of everything. And like I said, that's the great thing
about pitching is it just comes in all shapes and
sizes and there's no one way to do it, and
I'm learning how to do it on the fly. You know,
I've never been a guy that necessarily thought about mixing
it up as much as I have been, or throwing
a lot of different pitches, or throwing to both sides

(09:16):
of the plate, or throwing change ups or splits or
whatever you want to call the thing that I'm throwing.
But it's it's been kind of fun for me to
try it, and I've enjoyed it.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Do you want to know.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Before we let you go, because you've been very kind
to us with your time. Clayton Kershaw with us as
we were watching the game last night. You get out
there and it looks like the hair has got a
little bit of moisture, and I'm like, is he just
sweating a lot when he pitches or does he dunk
his head under some cool water to kind of keep
them cool on these hot days before he even takes
the mound?

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Can you share that look? Yeah, like a wet look.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
What is your approach because it looks like there's a
lot of moisture on the hair by the end of
the first inning.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
I'm sad to say, guys, that's just sweat, That's just
that's just me. That's just life at this point, man,
it's not easy to get out there. By the time
I'm warmed up It takes me six hours to get loose.
By the time I get loose, I'm sweaty, and it
just stays for the whole game. So thankfully we play
in la where it's nice all the time. But I
don't know how I do it in these human cities. Man,
it would be tough.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Oh, no doubt.

Speaker 5 (10:14):
All right.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Thank God for Clayton Kershaba, a real prince at the
city of Los Angeles, and somebody we've watched perform since
he was a very young man. Now a family man
and a mentor and a future Hall of Famer. What
a star. Thank you, Clayton, and have a wonderful night,
and stay healthy and we'll be watching, all right.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
Appreciate it, guys.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
There we go, Clayton Kershaw been a while, yeah, absolutely,
in a little while.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
I can hear everybody.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Kate's down there, Hey, all right, brother brother, Yeah, host
the Dodgers on deck. Yeah, keep that mic up, let's
eat maybe turn it down there. Hey, thanks for putting
up with those clowns, Clayton, you know, you and me,
those guys, guy's a bunch of idiots up there, so
I appreciate you tolerting their immaturity.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
So a big thank you to Verizon and Dave Weees
and all the access that we've had our executive producer
Tim Kates, two enginey with Bert and Craig, and not
to mention Ronnie Fossio back engineers in the studio, a
three engineer show to day. So really a big thank
you to Verizon. That's not something we always get. And

(11:15):
being able and Wan in the Dodger pr being able
to get down there into the media room and do
real interviews, long form asque interviews with guys on a
game day. Pretty darn cool. And that's because of Verizon.
And don't forget about the big show tomorrow at the
Verizon store in Pasadena.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Yeah, that is gonna be tomorrow five to six. Dave
Robert's gonna be out there in Pasadena. However, it will
be open at four. We're gonna have tickets, we're gonna
have merch and you will have an opportunity to meet
Dave Roberts. That is three sixty eight South Lake Avenue
five to six pm. Events starts at four, Tickets available,
merchandise available. That is all brought to you by Verizon,

(11:57):
our friends that opened up the interview room downstairs, for
us to catch up with Dave, for us to have
a conversation with Will Smith, and now to have one
with Clayton Kershaw from the Dodgers.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Dugout pretty awesome.

Speaker 4 (12:07):
Pe, That's no doubt about that, Matt. Do we have
a final hour fun fact?

Speaker 1 (12:10):
We do.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Fact.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
It's the Yeah, We're three fun.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Fun facts brought to you by Concordia University of Irvines
Masters in Coaching and Athletics Administration Program. It's a fact
that a coach has more influence on others in one
year than the average person does in a lifetime. Make
the most of that opportunity to impact others by finding
out more at CUI dot edus slash Coaching p The
Reds are in town.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Our final hour fun fact.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Red is the first color that babies can see, It
has the longest wavelength of all colors, and it is
the first new color term that also emerges in languages
after black and white, symbolizing a wide range of emotions
from love and passion to anger and danger.

Speaker 6 (12:56):
Red Cincinnati, Reds in town. That is a great fun fact.
All right, it is time for quickets, quick, hitch, I'll make.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
It quick y'all.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
Oh yeah, the Dodgers are seventy five and fifty nine
home tonight versus the Cincinnati Red Show. Halo Toni's on
the mound, show Head Bobblehead showed Head show Head nice
show it at night, show Hao Toddi Bobblehead night right
here at Dodger Stadium. And they're all lined up even
though they don't have to be. Everybody gets one. Eight.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
Oh, we just mentioned the high song.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Kim will rejoin the Dodgers, Roberts said when the rosters expand.
Michael Kopek is expected to return during this upcoming road trip,
per Dave Roberts. So some interesting moves on the roster
has September's coming.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
Yeah, Copek has really ruggled in the miners, whereas Tanner,
Scott Kirby Yates looked like they're dominant selves. Kopek, even
though he was the first one that was actually pitching
on rehab assignments and the miners, has taken a little
bit longer. So maybe that just means he's finally figured
out what the issues were. The NFL is reportedly lifting
their media ban on Tom Brady.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Oh wow, that only took a year.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
I'm sure he's upset that he can now attend production
meetings and has to get into town to day before
with coaches and teams. They will keep the rule in place,
though that prevents Brady from attending team practices because his
ownership stake with the Raiders. Last season, the NFL banned
him from production meetings, which was ridiculous due to his

(14:42):
conflicting roles as a Fox game analyst and Raiders minority owner.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
Former NFL quarterback Jake Kuttler is going to spend several
days in the Williamson County, Tennessee jail as part of
the plea deal that he took stemming from a drunken
and driving arrest in October twenty fours a while back.
Cutler pleaded guilty in at Franklin, Tennessee courtroom on Tuesday,
and the judge accepted Cutler's guilty plea, which will require

(15:11):
him to report to jail on September twenty ninth to
serve a four day jail sentence and forfeit his Tennessee
driver's life.

Speaker 3 (15:19):
I about that must have been pretty.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Bad, yeah, And I assume a lot of people would
think Cutler and his wise ass mouth. Certainly, he was
always known as a bit of a of a trash talker.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
That's going to get him in trouble in jail. Eh.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
I mean, I assume he's not in football shape anymore,
but Jay Culer was still a six three, two hundred
and twenty five pound football player, So I assumingly'd be
able to handle himself in the account in the city.

Speaker 6 (15:44):
Pokey, Yeah, we'll see. I'm a little worried about him.
Four days. There is a lot of sleepovers now.

Speaker 4 (15:50):
Three Top ten matchups this weekend, including Ohio State versus Texas.
We'll have that game for you right here on AM
five seventy Kickoff nine from Columbus and depending on the
Dodger schedule this September. In October, we're going to be
carrying some of the best college football games each Saturday
here on AM five seventy. USC hosts Missouri State.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
That's a separate story now, we're talking about carrying the
best college football games. Pause news story. USC host in
Missouri State on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Good point.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
They're a thirty five point home favorite. UCLA is a dog, though,
and they host Utah on Saturday night at the Rose.
The Bruins are a six point home dog to the Utes,
and we got a big one on Monday.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
We do quickly, though, Pee, because we do have a
little bit of time here, we can massage this. Noticed
a lot of the I don't know if it's Athlon
or Who's you know but or the Lindy's, but there
are people picking Utah's the sleeper team in the Big twelve.
A lot of folks say Texas Tech with all that
cash and all the transfer portal action they.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Had, well, let's do or die for O'Brien, he's got
a coach well this year.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Others think Arizona State, even though they lost Skataboo comes
back with a heck of a roster air Beanner. But
then some are like God for Utah.

Speaker 5 (17:09):
Now they have.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Eric Dampierre who's a transfer quarterback.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Hell of a basketball player from still has eligibility.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Maybe his name's not Eric.

Speaker 4 (17:18):
They have Dan Pierre, who is a quarterback from New
Mexico last year and he will be the quarterback for
the Utes this year. And Matt big game on Monday. Yes,
Bill Belichick.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Sunny Dykes, the college football debut of Bill Belichick. You'll
hear right here at HECU North Carolina AM five seventy
Jordan Hudson. They have filed for a trademark for the
term gold Digger, which I feel like should have already
been trademark.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
Kanye West had the song yeah and the intention. You
can have a trademark for different things. This would be
a trademark for a line of jewelry and key chains
that Jordan Hudson wants to put out. They have also
filed trademarks for Chapel Bill the bellustrator, Trail of Salty Tear?

Speaker 3 (18:11):
Are they doing this? Trail of Salty Tears?

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Very very sensitive by the way, no days off in
the Belichick way, because that's what Jordan does, right. This
is how Jordan's going to make her money. Instead of
just you know, cashing checks from Bill Belichick passing along
his millions to her, She's going to use Bill to
create her own fortune.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
So good luck indeed to her and everybody else involved.
What else do we have?

Speaker 2 (18:36):
We have the Knicks potentially hiring the NBA's first woman's
head coach. Before Mike Brown accepted the gig down, Staley
was one who was interviewed from South Carolina. Now, Staley
said and This is a big surprise. If the Knicks
would have offered me the job, I would have had

(18:58):
to do it. And see that coming, Staley told Candace
Parker and Alijah Boston on the Post Moves Show, not
just for me, but for women to break that op,
just to break open that to New York Knicks. And
I'm from Philly, but it's the freaking New York Knicks.
All right, Wow, Kates, you're on the move. Kates wants

(19:19):
to close up shot. We got forty seconds here, pe
all right, we gotta get out. Big thank you to
everybody involved.

Speaker 4 (19:25):
Social Matt and Ronnie and everybody will be back on tomorrow.
Our show will be We're both off. Matt will be
back on Friday. Show starts at three tomorrow, and enjoy
Dave Roberts at the Verizon store in Pasadena.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
Exactly right. Tim Kate's coming up next with Dodgers on deck.
First pitch against the Reds coming up at five forty pm,
all live from Dodger Stadium on your World Series Champion,
Home of the Dodgers and five seventy Alies Boys
