Paris. So another Olympic fun fact. Poop River, poop River beyond the
poop River, however, a placethat does have some contamination issues with their
bodies of water. Body of water. India was so good, oh clean,
clean as a whistle over. Therewas so good at field hockey in
(03:29):
the nineteen twenties that the British withdrewfrom the Olympics to avoid the possibility and
likely embarrassment by defeat at the handsof its own colony. India would win
gold in men's field hockey in nineteentwenty eight, thirty two, and thirty
six as a British colony, andthen as an independent nation in forty eight
(03:53):
When Great Britain returned to the fieldhockey field in the Olympics, they knocked
them off in the gold medal game. In forty eight, fifty two knocked
the Brits off in the Semis, fifty six knocked them out in the Semis
and would also go on to wingold again in sixty four and eighty.

Modern Warfare three Yeah Beyond Corn Vegasin conjunction with the Summer League. Bronnie
defeated Williams in a special Modern Warfarethree map to win the event. He
(06:00):
won a custom made Call of DutyChampionship belt. I love those custom belts,

there might be some truth to me. Yes, clearly he does. Just
yesterday, I was thinking about JohnWilkes booth and here it is. Thank

So there's that. The MLB AllStar Games starting lineups will be reviewed
for tomorrow's games have been Sorry, the MLB All Star Game starting lineups have

(09:33):
this is terrible news but not surprising. Who had, I guess my last
meeting with him last week and hesaid something about his health being a problem.
A great guy and a really reallycoach, great guy to cover for
years, you know, since hewas at Oregon and the teams I was
on were playing against him as acoordinator. Fresno State announced assistant head coach
(09:56):
linebacker coach Tim Skipper, who didit last year for the Bowl game,
is going to be the interim coachfor the Bulldogs. Jeff Tedford stepped down
because of health reasons. He's ledFresno to nineteen wins in the last two
years. They opened versus Michigan andthey were picked to finish third in the
Mountain West. They got everybody comingback. They'll still be good and they
(10:20):
have a culture for whatever you callwhatever people you over use that word,
but I mean they have a lotof people back. They didn't lose a
lot of transfers. They have theirwhole staff back. What does it mean
for the future mean in the Valleyof the Green Vee? I just don't
know. Maybe Skipper's the guy didn'tcall me coach? Well his name though,
(10:41):
is Tim Skipper? Yeah again, just call me coach. Yeah,
Bob Gibson's a coach. I'm askipper of this baseball You can just go
kick coach. Great Sanche reiterated todaythat the conference in the SEC has focused
on the sixteen members it has now. That is until the ACC explodes,
and then they'll go up, yeare reading among the conference green, No
(11:03):
wake forest. We don't want apiece of ful. How you listen here?
Okay, sixteen is our today, sixteen is our tomorrow. Say it
with me now, sixteen Wednesday. When the ACC explodes and Florida State lands
in our lap, maybe we'll beseventeen and Clemson comes calling. Don't sleep
(11:24):
on Duke. Now, will theygot money? I'm pretty it doesn't.
The Minnesota Stanford you want to?We need someone to compete with Vandy for
the last place slot in the SEC. Standford's loaded? You want that?
Well, good luck to the WestCoast schools in the ACC before it explodes.
Should Greg Sankie come knocking on yourdoor? Hey, we just got
(11:46):
here to the ACC. What's thatticking sound out here? Oh? Don't
you worry about that? Cal listenhere, tick tic tic tick. Have
all decided we need a villain inthe SEC. And I do feel as
though the attitude on the campus hereat Berkeley exactly what we are looking for.
Well, we don't want any partof that. We're a progressive institution
exactly right. That's why you're perfectfor us. We'll be right back with

big thanking Eric Winold if you missthat. Some incredible insights surrounding the debacle
(12:31):
that was the US men's national teamin Copa America and where they might go
from here in order to find themselvesa fearless leader that can guide them to
World Cup success joining us right now. Oh, this is great on the
Southern California Toyota Dealers Celebrity Microphone instudio. Isn't this great? A sojourn
(12:56):
all the way to Burnbank, Californiafor one of our favorite coaches in the
history of sports and our favorite basketballcoach. How do you know that it's
not even close the great mc croninfinal farce chesting people down in the PAC

(13:20):
PAC two reception in Las Vegas.Went to a private PA dinner. I
got to hear this. I didnot last long. It is our hero
will Well drinks. I'm out ofhere, the great Mic Cronin And I
don't know if he works out hishorses over here at the bird Bank Equine
Center. But no stranger to I'ma horse mone On the Petrasen Money Show,

UCLA head coach big ten bound,he arrived on horseback quicker than dealing
with the four h five. What'scracking, coach? How are you welcome
to the show? Thanks for doingit? Sorry, Vic, It's good
to be here, guys. Ishould have timed this up. I could
have played Lakeside today. Well, yeah, not a blade of grass out
(14:01):
of place there. Get out therewith Bob Hope, you know, shoot
around. Kevin Bailey has been therethirty five years. The pro at lakes
Oh wow, he's a die hardbrewing If you ever want to be depressed.
They have the Southern California Broadcasters dinnerthere once a year, and they
pressed that you're not a member. No, we're members. We got an
(14:22):
award one year they misspelled my name. They brought it over here from Blake's.
I remember that, and we dida public execution of sometimes you're in
an industry and you look around andyou're like, yeah, these are my
colleagues. This I don't want tobe these contemporary this is the industry in
which I work. Boxing press conference, its kind of feels sick. I
(14:43):
have done one. There you go. Yeah, so you know what the
underbelly of the society looks like.Mc cronin is our hero. He leads
up one of the most iconic basketballprograms in the history of the world,
if not the most. What isthis time of year like for guys like
you. You don't have to getall suited and booted, but it feels
like you're pretty busy. Put mycoaching hat back on, take off my
(15:05):
in the spring of general manager.Okay, so oh but the different look,
there's no difference anymore. Guys, now I'm here, we got time.
I mean, there's just no differenceany more really between college and pro
sports. The way the rules agencyor it's just the way it is.
I mean, it's just you know, it's a literally you're like signing contracts.
(15:28):
Yeah I said that in the spring, and I think people were kind
of alarm, But it's just takingpeople. It's really hard for everybody to
get their head around where it's at. That you're a free agent every year
if you want to be, oryou can before you put your name in
a portal, you may say youwant to negotiate with your current school to
(15:48):
re sign. I mean, thisis literally where it's at. So when
I tell you your general manager andowner, of course we got we have
to raise the money to pay ourguys. Now at the end of the
show, you that that's that's allgoing to change because they're going to get
what we raised for them and they'regoing to get paid by the school.
Right. But uh, it's veryreal, Like we have a board,
(16:12):
you know how much you're going toallocate to your your supposed main guys,
your what tier of players? Howdid you get that done so efficiently?
Seriously this offseason, guys, Ithink, I mean because you you really
got that done where it looked like, oh my god. And at UCLA
we know it takes five signatures toget a new pencil shop. Now seriously,
(16:33):
so how did how were you ableto do that in the context of
what you're really supposed to be doing, which is coaching college basketball. Yeah,
well, the the job description changed, so and I Y sure,
look, I was you know, what's funny, we just to wrap up
our season. I was really proudof our guys who finished fifth in the
Pact. Well, we were justin this era. You cannot play where
(16:56):
your best players are all freshman sophomores. You just cannot do it. Like
you It was hard enough five yearsago, you cannot do it right now.
But still with fifth year guys andeverybody else just gets older in the
portal. So I was proud ofthose guys. But you know, look,
to answer your question, we hadto get to the point where we
were financially able to get into game. I mean, you got to get
(17:17):
in the game. I mean, you know, people I have all these
college coaches friends of mine say thingsto me like, because I had made
a statement, you know, peoplesay, well, you chose to get
freshman No no, no, no, no no. You know, the
Reds didn't choose to loop to passon show heyo Tani. There's a reason
he's with the Dodgers, you know. And it's obviously seven hundred million.
(17:40):
So I mean, we were ableto get in the game, and you
know we're in the game now.You still got to get guys admitted to
UCLA. But there's so many guysin the portal that there's a part of
it, I like, because youget a chance to try to pick guys
not only are they old, orthey've maybe been through some things and they're
(18:03):
looking for somebody to actually tell himthe truth. Where the high school recruit
is still nobody's ever told him thetruth. Everybody's still telling him how great
he is. And because if theydon't, he transfers high schools, and
if they don't, he leaves AAUteams And they've probably done that anyway because
they got a better offer. Imean, it's just the world of grassroots
(18:25):
basketball as a whole, literally aworld of unto itself. So the older
kid is at a point maybe whereit's like, all right, you know
what do I want? Is itmoney? Do I want money? Do
I want to win? Do Iwant it? Somebody can also help me
get better by the way I canget a degree at UCLA, you know,
not a shavvy thing. So there'sso you kind of try to get
(18:49):
a chance to get guys that areready to act like men. They're a
little bit older. So yeah,to your point, we got seven guys
when the season was over and uhit was a grind, you know,
well it was you know, I'venever done this, but uh, speed
dating. Yeah, yeah, it'slike speed dating like bang, you know,
(19:10):
you're it's literally a two week recruitingperiod to where you're on with them.
You're zooming, you might zoom againnext, you know, they're visiting,
and then it's you know, here'sthe offer and you got twenty four
hours to take it because you can'tshop me around. Say hi to your
mother, Stephanie. No, it'sStacy. Yeah, you gotta have cards.
(19:32):
There's somebody you know. But becauseit's look, it's like the baseball
winter meetings, that is the springright now. That's what we just went
through. And people, you know, I talked to like a lot of
the great players uh of yesteryear thatplayed at UCLA, whether it's from Don
McClain to Tracy Murray to Mike Warren, and it's like it's so mind boggling
for these guys, I can imagineof how of how it is now and
(19:56):
not just the whole process of itall. Also that's just where so you
have to break your job has totallychanged. So now though the rosters set
and uh get to you know, get to switch and be the coach again.
The we just started last week,a week from Yeah, so our
summer eight weeks, you get eightweeks, eight weeks. The you know,
(20:18):
I'll start with the kids because I'vejust you know, as a father
that's got college age kids. Iremember, you know, I was kind
of in that sweet spot of whenpeople in California were pretty pissed about how
hard it was to get into UCS, and and that was all, Oh,
they still are, But I'm thinkingabout, like, if you're six
eight, it's different. The well, I'm thinking about the standout kids.
You mentioned it's hard to win withfreshmen. Now you got three kids coming
(20:41):
in, two out of Harvard Westlake, one out of Corona Centennial. We
have great high school basketball in southernCalifornia, I would imagine, like and
those are probably the two best programsthat. Yeah, so how does that,
like, how does it work whereyou still want to probably get your
hands on these kids right and getthem into the system and develop them yourself.
But yeah, on the high schoollevel, for us, it'll it's
(21:03):
a huge emphasis now because you're gonnayou're gonna and trying to put yourself in
a position to win a championship everyyear or compete or be you know,
be able to get to a finalfour. You're going to have to replace
your better players from within your program, but also with some older transfers.
And when you've got to be ina position, you have to be in
(21:26):
a position to raise money to beable to get the best of the best.
When it comes to that and theright fits and all that, well,
those guys are gonna cost money. It's going to be hard to add
that guy in as a freshman. You saw what we went through last year.
I think what you might be gettingat though, is, you know,
a bigger picture is a trickle downeffect of you know where if you
(21:51):
grat it's just basic numbers. Youknow, eventually you're going to lose a
lot of guys. You're gonna haveto sign six freshmen. You know,
unless you get some Juco guys.Well, those days are all over.
Nobody's doing that. This is nothappening. So you're getting two freshmen and
three transfers. If you got toget five guys, so three, there's
three less scholarships maybe per recruiting class, per school in Division one going to
(22:15):
a high school player. So ultimately, look it's musical chairs. Right.
So if there's three hundred and sixtyDivision one teams, okay, so they
all have thirteen scholarships, So Imean if they all had ten, that
would be thirty six hundred, right, So I mean you're you're dealing there,
I say, forty two hundred scholarshipsroughly. Well, if they're being
(22:37):
occupied by transfers. See what I'msaying, like, there's like there's nothing
left. There's ae thousand or sokids not going to get a Division one
scholarship that did before the portal thatdid get a Division one scholarship. So
there. What happens now is theygo Division two and that's like you got
the kid coming from South Dakota. They develop exactly in South Dakota State.
(23:02):
Great, great program. Well, you know, William Kyle's this veteran player,
defensive player to here in his league. He's an adult. You know,
he's polished. I mean, youget to pick right, a great
family, great kid, you know, perfect fit. We need athletic rebounder
to go with a Daemarra. Soyou can kind of put your roster literally
(23:22):
on the board. What what we'dlike to have and go buy it.
And I know people think that's crazy. They got UCLA coaches said go buy
players. That's what it is onpetros and money. But that's what I
mean, that's that's what it isall the way above board. Mc cronin
is our guest of the Silkhout ToyotaDealers celebrity heads that he's in here in
studio in the house. So thatbeing said, does it I mean football
(23:45):
is really that way and a lotof basketball is crazy in the same way.
It's like, what's it like tohave somebody else develop your guy?
Oh? You know what I mean? Like I was, you know,
like she was married before. Youknow. Yeah, again, you get
to pick where you're getting them from. You know, So are you getting
a guy that maybe you think youcould coach him in a different way and
(24:07):
he might be better, or you'repicking guys from like you mentioned South to
go to State. They're a bigwinning program at their level. So the
kid's a winner, you know,he's been part of winning culture. So
all that's a part of it.The funny part is I was kidding around
with Russell Turner down that you seeIrvine is a great, great coach,
arguably the best coach in the BigWest or one of them. And I
(24:30):
had a hair to great hair, great hair, and he says, uh,
I said to him, I'm thinkingabout raising money for your n i
L. He goes, I'm allfor it. He knew where I was
going. I'm gonna send I'm gonnasend a couple of players to Irvine and
you're going to tell and have theirni L paid for for you. You
(24:52):
get them, go ahead, startthem, try to win the Big Big
West with them for a couple ofyears, you know, I mean,
until are ready for me. Iknow we're being funny, but if I
had the extra nil money, youdo it right? Well, sure,
it's like it'd be like your GLeague team. It'd be like putting a
guy in JUCO back in the day, you know, when there was a
lot of junior college guys for GLeague. But then back in the day,
(25:15):
kid didn't have academics. You placedhim in a JUCO and got him
back. You know, So,I mean, what would why wouldn't you?
You know, you place him witha great coach, get him in
the UC system. Sure, sowhen you it's now, I'm super fascinated.
Now when you say by players. So let's say you, okay,
we've got to find a compliment toa day. That's that's what we're going
(25:36):
on. Do you then assign anumerical number like, hey, for this
position, I've allotted eight hundred grand. Now I need a wing score.
I'm gonna need one point one million? Is it that? Because I would
assume you've got to split the nutup a certain way, and you know
what each guy is going to costyou for that position. And so the
first year it all happened, wecouldn't compete financially. This year we could,
(26:00):
and it went from the guys.It went way up this past year
from the year before. So,because you know, people are competitive,
they want to win. I mean, all it takes is a big money
guy like Petros to say, hey, you know, hey, Mick,
let's win it all. Baby.Yeah, I'm gonna right ja a check.
(26:21):
Let's do what we I'm like thatguy at Arizona. You know when
Fish left, I can get angry. You know, I use my money
with my anger. We go andwe keep the quarterback on the long wide
receiver. But do you have tolike sit there with that guy and be
like, hey, here's what Ineed would you like some more cream spinners?
Right? Fortunately I have not.Uh. Our supporters aren't like that.
So people that people have stepped upfor us, they kind of know.
(26:45):
I brother, probably we would losebefore I had, you know,
some banker telling me, how areyou allowed to connect with them? Oh?
Okay, so that's fine, youcan. You guys can all that's
doing it right, But I didn'tknow if you could communicate with them and
tell them exact how those rules were. So makes the deal and who doesn't?
You're going there are no rules none, So where we're at is there
(27:07):
were. And when this was allput in, there was an intention.
Nil was supposed to be fair marketvalue. You you can't. You cannot
offer and induce players in recruits. That's what what the original rule was put
in. Tennessee then got a letterthat they were going to be investigated.
(27:27):
They had they got to their attorneygeneral, and the NCAA just stopped.
They just stopped. It all stoppedbecause they can't lose any more lawsuits.
They just can't. That's what youcould transfer. One time, the North
of the Wide receiver at North Carolinafought that. Yeah, transfer and they
can't lose look, guys, wewere almost at extinction. I mean that's
(27:51):
where we have to figure out thesettlement and pay where the players are going
to get paid a percentage of therevenue. And it's coming. I mean
the numbers twenty twenty two million, and I mean it's just reality, and
it's coming to CFP money with theexpansion to twelve people. So why are
they going to twelve? They needthe money to pay the players because they
(28:12):
got to settle these three lawsuits andthey've agreed, but now the judges got
to accept it, and there's justa lot of eyes got to be dotted.
He's got to be crossed, andthe people are trying to say,
look when you talk about what's goingon, you know, Charles Baker's ahead
of the nca right now. Iwas trying to save college sports. Whatever
happened to Norman Dale's pick it fenceexactly? I mean where are we,
(28:33):
dude? Like you know how theysay the ship is sailed. We can't
even see the port. Yeah, what a trip. So for you,
I mean, your job after allthis, like you said, you get
to be a coach again, isto build a basketball team. Yeah,
I'm back to there. You know. So you have a percentage of your
players developed by someone else, transferguys that you really want there it's paid
money for them. You got apercentage of your players who are new guys
freshman what you're used to, anew class every year. And a percentage
(28:56):
of your players who were pretty goodcontributors from last chair. Yep, how
do you push them all together? And but that's the exciting part, right
you know, my guy coach Robertsis on Lakeside guy by the way,
I think he just got in lastweek. But they good sponsor. We'll
get you. He's gonna be.I just play as his guests. I'll
(29:17):
bring him to El Cave. Youdon't have the membership that has the members
exactly no need, right so America'sguests. So you guys know what I'm
saying. They it's look, atthe end of the day, you know,
as I said with pro sports,I mean you got guys. You
know, you got team players youdrafted and came up to your system.
(29:38):
Other guys you added as free agents. I mean it's that's when I when
I refer so the development somber summerthrough through you summer free agency. But
you get to pick those so thatyou know, that's not a bad thing.
You know when you're picking from oldso you're picking young guys, that's
a hit or miss more. Youknow, you get to see a finished
product a little bit more so,and then they're you know, guys are
(30:02):
making money. So it's just extremelyuh similar. I mean, look the
line between amateur and pro of forgetyou know the fact of making money.
But it's looking the same. Thejobs are looking the same. The difference
is I got to raise my payrollright now. No, that that's the
hardest part. So you know,Martin Jarman's really helped me in the last
(30:26):
year. Are Development Department at Uc l A. And we've had some
key people step up. They don'tlike to be named, but uh yeah
they that that got added on thejob title. You know some places they
may just do it for you.You know, I like being here,
so it is what it is formoney, which is yeah, not ideal.
(30:47):
Yeah, are the usually do thatafter the eighteenth hole? That's right
there? You go? Are thereare there teams that are there schools that
get in and you're like, we'reout. They're they're coffers are so much
deeper than everybody else's they it's it'sa waste of my time a little bit,
maybe one or two right now?The plan you know that have that
(31:08):
kind of stretched it. The interestingthing with this is was say, well,
how do you know nobody knows becauseall these all these NIO collectives have
kids on confidentiality agreements, right,so the losing school leaks something out,
you know, and stuff like that. I mean, so nobody really knows.
(31:30):
That's the other you know. Likeagain, in pro sports, contracts
are on the table, right,I mean, you know it's Otani gets
seven hundred million, you know whatthe numbers? Nobody knows the number.
