Speaker 2 (00:27):
George Reister is just.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Out here dancing on graves like Boise States getting their
teeth kicked in by South Florida, and George is on
social media taking victory laps with the only ranked team
in action in college football the.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Week one game by I told everybody, all of these
people picked Boise State to be good this year because
they were good last year with Aston GenZ right, Ashton
GT's gone in their quarterback matics, he's a jag. He's
just a guy. He's not he's not a bad quarterback,

(01:03):
but he's just a guy. And the and they're they're
running backs now they are they're they're solid. But I
think that people are going to find out real fast
how not only Asson G two was special, yes, like
he was, he is going to be one of the
best backs in the NFL as a rookie. He is

(01:24):
that special. He's not going to be okay, he's not
going to be just normal. He's going to be like
obviously they're Sakuon Barkley. And then there is you know,
Derrick Henry who finished second in rushing last year, behind
him somewhere to the like three four will be assen gt.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
And I mean, look it's at Boise State.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
When USC would lose a great player, there'd be another
one waiting in the wings. Yes, Like you know, the
third best running back at USC is the best running
back at ninety percent of the country back in the day.
And so at Boise State. It's not the football factory.
It's a great football program. They've had a great run.
He was a great player. They've done they've done amazing things.
It's not the football factory they are are.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
They are a development place. They are a place where
you go and you develop and and like it is
similar to what like that that they will be able
to make a good run like they did last year
every four to five years. That's not an every year
thing because you have to build it and then have

(02:35):
some good things happen. To you along the way.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, and so so we've got it has just gone
final and South Florida is taking care of business thirty
four to seven over Boise State. Now we are in
because you know Matt's Matt's, you know, taking the day off.
Tim Kates is on a Don Cuco's tour somewhere in Arizona.
He's disguised at is taking daughter to college. We think

(03:00):
he's visiting every Don Kucko's from uh from here to
to Tijuana to try and get his grudge.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
A snake around him?

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Oh, is he afraid of snakes?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Big time? Kate? Yes? Okay, So so here's a quick
Kate story and I can tell it because he's told
it on on air. Do you know the Kate story?
He's got that Indiana Jones and him afraid of snakes? Yeah,
this dude. Yes, So he was there was a snake
in his driveway and and he was basically held hostage

(03:33):
in the car or somewhere else. His wife had to
come out and kill the snake.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
It was like a gopher snake or something to Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Really yes, wife had to come out and kill the
snake for him.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
I mean, how did she do it?

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Shovel called Don McLean.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
True snake killer.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I mean there is one in the house, so I'm
well listen, I mean, look, you know he Kate's great, dude,
great that.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Your wife had to kill I wouldn't tell you.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
I'm not telling anybody. And God forbid, if my son
saw that, I would bribe him for the rest of
his life.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
That would not that would not make the rounds.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
But no, it is uh look so so George and no, no, no, no, no,
it's not. Look it goes back to the Ryan Day stuff,
like and we're going to catch up here on the
Southern California Toyota Dealers Celebrity hotline, uh with you know,
the great Danny Canel, and we're gonna ask him about
this whole Ryan Day situation at Ohio State. But it's like,

(04:38):
once you show that something bothers you, or once you
show a weakness, the people closest to you are going
to remind you of that for the rest of time.
Like the people like so yeah, I would never let
that out, like if that, if that was the case,
I would never like I.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Will never forget this Tim Kate's story, Like this is
this is seared into my brain. When I think of Kate,
I think of I think of I think of Kate's
and obviously work. I think about him with Petros and money,
the Dodgers, the U c l A Show, all of
those things.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
But that snake story, oh yeah, oh yeah, that's never Now.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
I will say this, how are we feeling looking at
the Big Ten? Which, by the way, Texas, Ohio State,
the Big Game is going to be here on AM
five seventy l A Sports that's coming up kickoff nine
am here on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
But look, I.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Mean, George Reister, you've got You've got Oregon in the
Big Ten. You've got some maybe some potential optimism for
you know, USC this year. It's like, all right, this
might be okay. So I mean, how do we feel
if we could just surmise your opinions before we catch
up with Danny Kneal, how are you feeling.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Quickly about USC and UCLA this upcoming year?

Speaker 3 (05:52):
I picked UCLA to have a better Big Ten record
than USC, and that probably shot a lot of people.
But I'm not sure that people realize how much talent
it has been acquired over there at UCLA. And if
Deshaun Foster can get them playing well, particularly at the

(06:12):
beginning of the season, because they should definitely have an
upgrade at quarterback over Ethan Garber's last year with nico
Ie Maliava at quarterback, and they have upgraded their offensive line,
which they had one of the worst rushing attacks in
all of college football last year. So you know that
Deshaun Foster, who was a running back that can't he

(06:33):
can't sleep at night knowing that he couldn't run the
football last year. And USC, I believe that mister Lincoln
Riley has done some really good things in terms of
upgrading the defense. D'Anton Lynn, who is a phenomenal defensive coordinator.

(06:54):
I remember meeting him because his dad was our running
backs coach in Jacksonville. And so yeah, and so D'Anton
did a great job at U c l A, doing
a really good job at USC. And so the defense
is going to be better, but the issue is their

(07:15):
offensive line at US. He is not going to be
great now this this year. And if and then obviously
Jaden my my vad quarterback, I thought he would turned
the ball like he's a turnover waiting to happen. And
I believe that that that that puts a ceiling on them.
But here's the thing. I do believe that that next

(07:37):
year could be brighter and could be better. But the
problem is is that I think that people's USC fans
optimism is so wrapped up into this season because they
felt like they've gone quote unquote all in on this
year because they've spent so much money in recruiting trying
to change it, hiring a GM and Chad Bowden and

(07:57):
everything else, that an eight and four season this year
would feel bad to them. And I think that that
is probably where that nine to three may be the ceiling,
but you're probably looking at it somewhere in between seven
and five and eight and four.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
The yeah, it's well, look, I mean it all starts
this Saturday. USC and UCLA both in action. USC gets
Missouri State, UCLA gets Utah coming up this Saturday. And
speaking of Saturday, this Saturday afternoon, get an autograph in
your picture taken with Andre Ethier at Superior Grocers and Lynnwood,

the Great Danny Canal, a national champion, joined you next
here George Reister, Jonas Knox in for Petro Some money
here on the blowtorch. It's a pest some money show

(09:22):
here on AM five to seventy LA Sports. George Reister,
Jonas Knox In for the guys. Coming up, we'll call
it a little over fifteen minutes from now. There's something
that I just do not understand that George was a
part of, and many people here in LA were a
part of last night. We will get into that for
you again. Coming up here a little over fifteen minutes

(09:44):
from now. Right now, we welcome in a national champion.
He is Danny Canell, former Florida State quarterback. You can
see him on CBS Sports. You can hear him on
Sirius XM College Sports every morning. And he's joining us
courtesy a bet Online. You can show out betonline dot
org for updated college football totals and lines. Danny, we

(10:05):
appreciate the time.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
How are you?

Speaker 4 (10:07):
What's up, fellas?

Speaker 1 (10:08):
How we doing?

Speaker 4 (10:09):
I'm fired up? We already got game action taking place
right now. I'm actually in the car on the road
to Tallahassee, Florida, to go watch my Florida State Seminoles
take on the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. So, man,
I am fired up to be on with you guys
and preview a little college football.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
There we go, Danny that that game in particular, George
Reister here, so your your Noles are almost fourteen point dogs,
and Thomas Cassiano's their new quarterback transfer from Boston College,
has talked all types of trash. There's no nobody scared
and nick saving anymore, all of this stuff. How's this

(10:50):
game gonna go?

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Danny oh Man.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
For me?

Speaker 4 (10:54):
Because when I saw those comments, I was like, what.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Are you doing?

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Why on earth would you kick that hornet's nest? Because
you know, Bama's already got a bad taste in their
mouth from last season right nine to three, they losing
their bowl game from Michigan. They've taken enough heat and
criticism from their fan base. And then they got a
quarterback from a team and I knowed he was a transfer,
but Florida State was a two win team last year

(11:21):
and he comes out there popping off that was not
my style, like I would have never like that was
one thing coach Balden always preached us. He was like, hey,
don't give any bulletin board material. I will say, this
is more trending now to be able to talk a
little smack And as long as you back it up,
then go ahead and say all you want. But if
it blows up in his face, not only Alabama fans

(11:43):
are going to be reminding him of it, but also
Florida State fans could turn on them. They'll be like,
what were you doing? Talk in your mouth? So we'll
see how it unfolds. They are going to have their
hands full, right, I mean, but it's really there's so
much unknown. I mean, I think Alabama's going to be
a really good football team, you know. The one question
is Florida State has question marks all over the field,

(12:03):
not only Thomas Costelano's once again where Mike Novell has
kind of lived and he's had some success two years
ago with a transfer portal. They have a ton of
new players, including one from Out Your Way and Deuce Robinson,
a wide receiver that I've heard they like him so far.
But they have so many question marks. New offensive coordinator
with Gus Malzan paired with Tommy Costolatos. They've got a

(12:25):
new defensive coordinatory brought in from Nebraska. Mike Dorbello cleaned
house last year in a lot of different ways, So
I honestly, I don't know what I'm gonna get when
I go there. And I've talked to a lot of
Florida State fans and I would put myself in this
camp kind of shell shocked from last year that was
that has the fan base reeling a little bit. There's
some cautious optimism, but this is definitely one of those

(12:47):
years you kind of wish you had an fcsponent or
a directional school, the kind of get a win under
your belt. You are going to get tested right out
of the gate, playing at home in front of your
home crowd. So I'm excited to be there, but I'm
kind of got a little of the nerves going through me,
wondering how this thing's gonna unfold.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
How does last season happen? Because you're thirteen and oh
the season prior and then you go too and ten
and granted it's not like Mike Norton Norvel forgot how
to coach, but when you look at his record with
his quarterback, you know, prior versus any other quarterback, it
ain't been good. So was it the quarterback that was.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
A part of the problem, Like, I think that was
sort of the thing that started things downhill. But here's
what I'm kind of noticing, and this is something in
this new era, a transfer portal where you can and
I mentioned he went to the portal again two years ago.
That season they ran the table in the regular season.
They had a lot of transfer guys there and it worked,
but they did have a veteran quarterback who had been there.

(13:47):
They missed on dju Unblay. But I just from outside
to come in and play one year. As soon as
you face some adversity and you start losing and you
can't accomplish your goal, which was very early in the
season for Florida State, I thought the team throw in
the towel and it kind of reminded me of when
I was in the NFL on some bad teams and

(14:07):
guys start going through the motions and they're like, oh,
we are checks still gonna clear, I'm still getting paid.
I'll show up for work, but I'm not gonna you know,
I don't really care that much. Like going back fifteen
twenty years, if you were at a program there was
a pride in your classmates, like the guys you came
in as freshmen with you play for the team, like

(14:27):
the history of the program. These guys don't have any history.
They're on campus for eight months before they're out of there.
I think it's something to keep an eye on. We
saw that in Colorado a couple of years ago before
they had the good season last year with Shador. You know,
there's a lot of teams that have kind of come
up short. It's kind of blown up in their faces.
But such transfer portal heavy teams, it can work, but
it also be combustible, and I think that's what you

(14:49):
saw last year with Florida State.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Danny Canell joining us here on a five to seven
E LA Sports George Reister, Jonas Knox in for the guys.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Let me ask you locally.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Here in LA the pressure you think Lincoln Riley should
be under going into this next season with the Trojans.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
I mean, Jonas, they're paying them a lot of money.
He's a guy who was, you know, rattling off double
digit win seasons at Oklahoma and it really hasn't lived
up to the expectations yet. And I know you had
a Heisman Trophy winner in Caleb Williams, but last year
kind of fell off the rails. So I think there
should be a lot of pressure on Lincoln Riley. You're
paying them a lot of money. He's been a good coach.
You should expect more of the same. Now here's what

(15:29):
I'm kind of buying in to USC. I think the
Trojans could be good this year. And I know USC
fans probably got sick of hearing it, but they were
close last year. They did have some close losses against
really good football teams. Penn State they had at home
and they took him to overtime, one that just got
away from him. How about Notre Dame, a team that

(15:50):
made it all the way to the championship game. I
know the final score was a little bit misleading, but
they had a couple of pick sixes late to really
get that one away from them. But physically they could
hand them, and then they had to figure out figure
out the quarterback position where you know the miller Moss
was there. He struggled a little bit, started forcing the ball.
Jade Maeva steps in Now, I kind of feel like

(16:12):
USC could have gone out and spent and bought, you know,
a quarterback out there, somebody they really liked, but they
liked what they saw in Jade Mayeva. And I think
Lincoln Riley, I'm gonna trust his history with three first
round you know, overall number one overall picks, and guys
that have won the Heisman Trophy. I'm gonna trust his
ability to recognize quarterback talent and develop it. So I

(16:32):
actually feel pretty good about him this season in a
Big ten, which is a little bit top heavy, I
think they're one of the more talented teams. If they
get a couple of close wins to go their way
to opposite the last year, I think they can be
a sneaky playoff contender.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Oo oh my goodness, man, that that that humidity.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
Must I also I might be like Lincoln Riley. I
talked to him at media days in Las Vegas, and
he had kind of a quiet confidence. Now, everybody's confident,
everybody's optimistic in the offseason, but I thought he thought.
I think he feels pretty good about his roster. I
also liked that they cleaned outs with the strength staff.
I do think that was an issue. They made the

(17:12):
change to coordinator a year ago. I think that defense
will be proved after another year of that system. So
I'm kind of buying into little vibes with around USC's program.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
By the way you do mention the uh they were
in a lot of those games, it just seem like
somewhere you could count on them at the end of
the game making a mistake or it just falling apart.
And I don't know, I don't know if that was
just a team thing or a Lincoln Riley I mean,
who knows.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
But I just wonder, is that is that the norm?
Do we expect it?

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Because yeah, I mean a couple of those games, you know,
we look back and we go, man, you know, we're
talking about a whole whole different story going into this
next season.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
If they just can pull through in a couple of
those matchups late, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
But to your back to the original question, if they
go six and six or seven and five and it's
a similar season, then it's going to get really uncomfortable.
But you know, and I know USC's got a lot
of money at their disposal. There is a big buyout
still for Lincoln Riley. Like that's prohibiting a lot of schools,
especially when you have to start paying the players and
budgets are a little bit tighter, you got to make

(18:16):
some really uncomfortable decisions. Florida State's in the same position
with Mike Norvel. You know, a lot of fans probably
would have said cut bait last year after two and ten,
but he had fifty million dollars for a buyout. This year,
it only goes down to forty and Florida State's just
not a position to cut a check like that. So
if Florida State is six and six or seven and five,
it could get uncomfortable around Tallahassee. Now, I think you

(18:38):
kind of have to go one more year for both
of those programs if they don't, you know, achieve their
goals and get back, you know, to where the historically
those programs have been. But at some point it gets
so bad that you just have people, you know, the
bigger boosters, cutting big checks because they've just gotten tired
of it.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
DIDs that cut throw it out there, they're just they're
getting ready of Frike Norvell after one year.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Oh yeah, damn the win win now or get out
damn uh Danny how important is this Clemson LSU game
to both the ACC and the SEC, and specifically Brian Kelly,
who's like, oh, for his last five.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Season openers, Georgia's huge. I mean, I'm stating the obvious.
But you know what's interesting is something it's like, it's
such a cliche. Something's got to give, right, And you
mentioned Brian Kelly's you know, awful record and openers, two
of which were to my Florida State seminals. So I
like him a little bit of a plug there. But
on the other side, Clemson last season was zero to

(19:39):
three against the SEC. You know, they lost that opener
against Georgia, they lost at home against South Carolina, and
then they lost in the playoffs against Texas. So they're
looking at the season saying, we beat a lot of teams,
we didn't beat very many good teams. Like they put
up a lot of good numbers, and they were able
to beat SMU to get that spot in the playoffs,
and they played good against Texas. But they want to

(20:01):
show because they're kind of an in this portal world.
And you guys know this, Davo Sweeney's kind of bucked
the trend. He's built from within and they feel like
then they did dabble in the portal. They got a
couple players won, a defensive lineman for Bernue will help.
It's supposed to be pretty good that they didn't get
some like need based portals. I think they have three guys,
so you know, some programs are getting twenty and thirty,

(20:22):
but at least they're going to address needs, which I
think Dabo has done. But he's feeling like, Okay, all
that culture development, roster development, this is the year it's
supposed to pay off. This is the one and so
it does feel like with the amount of returners they
have that they should be in a pretty good position.
LSU's got some question marks for me. They have four

(20:43):
new offensive linemen trying to protect Garrett Nutsmeyer on the
road in a hostile environment, and he is old school
pocket passer. He does not like to run the football.
So I kind of like Clemson in this one. But
I'm a little bit nervous because of that record against
the SEC last year. But I like click kag on
their quarterback. He on the other side talking about a
poga pass with Karen Nuzmyer. Kay klub Nick found his

(21:06):
legs on the back end of last season and kind
of opened up a whole new aspect of his game
and it made him much suffered defense. They have some
really good wide receiver on the outside, so at Tendeleen.
I liked Clemson lay in the three and a half
at home in that game.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Danny Canell joining us here on Fox Sports Radio or
AM five seventy OLI Sports. Sorry, that's a bad habit.
Sorry everybody bad habit here, just just letting you know.
But you are a national champion. The Ohio State Buckeys
are national champions. Yet all the conversation, all the focus
for this game against Texas, which by the way, you
can hear on AM five to seventy LA Sports this

(21:40):
Saturday morning at nine am here on the Blowtorch, all
the conversation seems to be about them. Did they ban
Dave Portnoy from entering into the stadium?

Speaker 2 (21:50):
Did they not? The back and forth?

Speaker 1 (21:52):
I gotta be I don't think that Bobby Bowden would
have pulled a soft move like this back in your day.
I can't imagine whether it's the Hurricanes or the Gators.
What do you make of this situation in Ohio State's
handling of.

Speaker 4 (22:06):
All this jonas one thing I will I said, I
appreciate you calling me a national champion. I did only
start one game in that championship season, and I held
the clipboard. I actually I did hold for kicks. So
I did hold the national championship winning kicks. No, I
didn't get a ring from that. Yeah, I appreciate that.
Thank you. I appreciate that. And I do have a ring,
So that's a good thing. But back to your question,

(22:27):
I do not think Bobby I mean Bobby Bowden. He
was the biggest sweetheart and he worked the media. It's
like he charmed the media. That's why all they kind
of liked him. And he was a coach who was
getting a lot of criticism for not winning the big game.
Never let it get to him, always smiled with the media,
gave him all the time in the world. They could
never in a million years would have done that. That

(22:49):
being said, there weren't any media members at the time
that were flying banners over Florida State Stadium, you know,
all things.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
The whole program.

Speaker 4 (22:58):
So like that is a unique situation and it's something
that only unfolds. Like in twenty twenty five, the way
media has gone and we've got guys with megaphones that
are out there that you know, have their own voice,
with millions of followers on social media and out there
pounding their chest. So I get it from where Ryan

(23:19):
Day is frustrated. But you cannot be that soft. You
know what you have to do. You have to go
out there and you have to beat Texas and say,
you know what, shove it up Fortnoy's butt, you know, like,
I mean, that's what you have to do. And then
you got to beat Michigan for the first time in
four years. You got to use that for motivation and
then taunted back like I know, it's it's kind of
the way the world works now. But you cannot let

(23:41):
people know that it bothers you because to me, it
makes you look weak, like you're saying mentally weak, like
why are you so worried it's he in your head
that much that you're making go into these lengths to
make sure you can't come in the stadium. That to
me does feel incredibly weak.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
It doesn't even play right.

Speaker 4 (24:02):
It is bizarre is and the biggest winner clearly is Portanoy,
like he revels in this. Yes, you know, and I
think I think it's good for Fox too, who I
think it was a brilliant higher as kind of a
counter to Pat McAfee, who's sort of the big voice
on college game Day, which has done a great job.
So I think it's been a brilliant move for Fox,
and it's been even better for Dave Portnoy and his profile.

Speaker 3 (24:23):
Hey Danny, I need you to talk about my my
Oregon Ducks. I feel like they're flying under the radar
this year, and I think that it's perfect for them,
breaking in a new quarterback with Dante more young, young
wide receivers, but this defense should be I think special.

Speaker 4 (24:42):
George, I'm with you. I think there's two teams and
they're both ranked in the top ten, so it's like
hard to say that they're flying under the radar, but
I cannot. I haven't found one person that has picked
Oregon to win the Big Ten championship, something they did
last year. But we forget because of that ugly performance
to the Roast Bowl, and that just those games kind
of happened, you know. I mean, they didn't make adjustments

(25:05):
and they got beat. It was ugly, but they still
are really really talented and Dante Moore another player who
you guys are familiar with because of his time at
UCLA out there in Los Angeles. He's a five star.
He's got all the talent of the world. I think
he was thrown a little bit to the Wolves his
freshman year struggle with some interceptions. I think he could
do wonders for him to sit behind Dylan Gabriel, which

(25:25):
he did last year. Watch a true veteran, somebody who
played for like eighteen years and got football. Watch how
he prepares. And you mentioned the defense mateo Uljungalay, You
guys got the right Ouiso delay like you got the
one like That's DJ's brother who was a disaster for
Florida State last year. He burst on the scene. I
remember that Ohio State game when it was in Eugene

(25:48):
and they had a couple of injuries and people thought
that Oregon defense would suffer, and he stepped up. He
was flying all over the field. He has a first
round talent and Dan Lanning is a defensive minded coach,
and they have been recruiting really well. They hit the
porter really well. They got the number one offensive tackle
out there in Isaiah Worlds. Who is going to be
Manning down the fort I think they're going to try

(26:10):
to run the football and watch out for Makay Hughes
from TWU Lane. Guys had back to back seasons with
over fourteen hundred yards. I think he could be that
workhorse back to take some of the press drops. Oneymore,
they got a speeds or a freshman on the outside,
the Coryan Moore who was like a track star, and
I think he could be the style of a Ryan
Williams who lit it up last year at Alabama. I

(26:31):
think Oregon is going to be back in the mix
for the playoffs. I don't think they're going anywhere. I'm
going to trust the consistency, which with Dan Lanning has
won out there in your gen.

Speaker 1 (26:40):
Danny, I got to ask you before we let you go,
because we obviously watched the game in Dublin last week.
We know what happened to Florida State and Dublin Week
one last year, and you just see sloppy play because
you know it's the first game of the year. You
know you see a lot of maybe some low scoring affairs, turnovers,
et cetera. How did you feel with no preseason, with

(27:03):
no and the season starts and it's like, all right,
get out there. These games all count. How did how
long did it take for you and and the offense
and the rest of your teammates to feel like, all right,
we've we've we've worked through a lot of the early
rust and issues that come along with it in the
middle of playing a game that counts towards your pursuit
of a national championship.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
Jonason didn't take us long at all. You know why,
because we actually played football in training camp. You know,
like we we went live a lot, and we had
two a days a lot.

Speaker 1 (27:34):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (27:34):
You know, we used to call it training camp. They
still call it training camp now. I think they should
call it sleepaway camp because it's like they I mean,
they just like there's a lot of team bonding exercises,
and they hear great speakers, and they do a lot
of walkthroughs, but they really don't practice tackling live at all.
And so I think it's a big shock to the
system for a lot of these players because it's more

(27:57):
like the NFL now. And that's why I think the
NFL is really sloppy in the football season. You're talking
about professional athletes who train all off season a lot
of those teams aren't tackling. You're even seeing a trend
where more NFL teams are playing starters in the preseason saying,
you know what, we'll take the risk of injury. We
want to make sure we get out of the gate strong.
And I think it's an issue that college football needs

(28:17):
to look at.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
Now.

Speaker 4 (28:18):
They're very protective of players, and understandably so, with you know,
the concern for concussion and hits to the head, but
it's a physical, violent sport and you cannot replicate it
by just doing stud in practice, which is where you
basically have one contact how to bump a guy up
and then you let them go. You've got to learn
how to wrap up and bring guys to the ground.

(28:39):
Nobody does it, and so I think it makes for
some really sloppy football. And the offense is kind of
shell shock too, because there, for the first time, quarterbacks
are seeing live pass rushes. Wide receivers are going to
the middle and they're used to flying over there and
not worried about any contact. All of a sudden, they
got people ready to, you know, take their heads off.
So everybody's kind of I think it leads to some
really sloppy play, and it is one of the reasons

(29:01):
I do like a lot of unders this weekend. That
was one of my favorite plays in the last weekend's
game was the under in that one, which almost will
be over if Iowa stayed on knock that one in
at the end. So that was a little dicey because
they had twenty four points in the fourth quarter. But
but yeah, I think it's a tribute to the issues
that are going on in training camp with nobody hitting.

Speaker 1 (29:20):
This will probably make you feel good. Brady Quinn had
the over, so he had to wear that one for sure.
I love it so Danny Caneal You can see him

Make sure you stick around. Coming off top of the hour.

Speaker 1 (30:55):
David Vase with Brad Paisley on Dodger Talk, So make
sure you stick around for that. By the way, make
sure you stick around a little bit longer at Army
games if you go to them. George, I don't know
if you saw this. In the world of college football,
things are changing even at Army, where they're going to
begin selling alcoholic beverages at football games this upcoming season.

(31:19):
They were the last service academy to not sell alcoholic
football games. Air Force began sales in twenty seventeen, Navy
in twenty twenty one, and so now Army's going to
go ahead and have throat Burners ready to rock here
for the upcoming season.

Speaker 3 (31:33):
Well, the question is why weren't they right? Because oh man,
there are men and women in our service academies that
are not drinking on the weekends. What I mean, what
were we trying to preserve? Is the question. While there
are beer ads in the middle of the.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
Game, exactly, it doesn't make any sense. And I remember
going to a USC Washington game years ago, and this
was back when Iron Willingham was the coach of Washington
and the you know, USC bludgeoned them. That was liner
Reggie Bush all the and I remember there was this
thing to where you could only have two drinks or

(32:10):
there was something random like that.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
And well, I remember being.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
There and I keeping counted this.

Speaker 1 (32:15):
Oh and I remember thinking to myself, like, do you
know what's going on in the parking lot?

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Are you aware of what's going on in the parking lot?

Speaker 1 (32:22):
Like I can't imagine in Eugene everyone's keeping it squeaky clean.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Then nobody's having a cocktailer.

Speaker 3 (32:28):
They weren't. It was a dry stadium until a couple
of years ago too, in in Eugene, Bro, I promise
you and those fans were still rabbid and they were active. Now,
I will tell you I am one hundred percent for
stopping alcohol sales at the end of the third quarter.
Oh yeah, yeah, that I am in favor of. But

(32:49):
but as far as you know, like saying you you
can't bring this into the stadium, imagine the environment it. Yes,
people are already acting wild with with without it, because
they have pregame, they have sauceduff before they even go
into the stadium and when they when they get a
beer inside of the stadium. They're just trying to maintain

(33:11):
that same level throughout the entire game. And also guess
what people are sneaking things inside of all sorts of
of of of of contraptions. So I used to have these, uh,
these baggies, right, these baggies that that you could heat
seal and you would put out alcohol in them and

(33:33):
just and just rip them open like the kid Yeah,
like the kids, like the Gogurts and all of the yeah.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Bro, like a capri sun. Yes, they just squeeze it
all that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
Yeah, just heat uh heat sealed that thing and you
and you're ready for I was.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
I was unfamiliar with the plastic flask phenomenon. Yeah, and
then lead to Lap from Fox Sports Radio. That's essentially
what that's essentially what it is like how you stick
it booze and you're a cheap skate.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
He goes, oh, plastic flask.

Speaker 3 (33:59):
Yeah, he gets it on. It doesn't you know, it
doesn't go off in a metal detector. And if it's
a place where they're not actively patting you down like TSA,
there's no issue.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
Oh yeah, Because I can recall I was at another
game I was at was South Carolina Georgia. This is
probably ten years ago. I think Todd Gurley was playing
for Georgia and there was a weather delay. And back
then at Williams Brice where South Carolina plays, they didn't
serve alcohol. I don't know if they do now I'm
assuming they do.

Speaker 2 (34:29):
So there's this.

Speaker 3 (34:30):
Weather dobble belt. Yeah, that's last to a.

Speaker 1 (34:33):
Depth, and so everybody's out there in the parking lot
and they're just getting torched, and then an announcement comes
on because people are starting to finish up and they're
closing their coolers and all that. An announcement comes over.
There's been a weather delay. People are not permitted to
go into the stadium. The kickoff is expected in ninety
minutes later. The normal stay in the parking lot until

(34:55):
we give you permission to come in.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
And so everybody just looked around at each other and said, swe.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
Keep the party going. It keeps the party going.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
By the time the game kicked off, it was ninety
minutes later. People were drenched in human humid rain that
had fallen. The lightning delays all that, and they were annihilated.
And I just thought to myself, you could probably just
let this happen during the game, like you could. Probably
you'd get more people in. You'd make money off it,
which is which is the other part of all this.

(35:23):
You can make money off the alcohol sales and a
lot of it. I just I didn't understand why it
took so long.

Speaker 3 (35:28):
See, I am a big personal responsibility person that we
all have our you know, personal responsibility, and if you
step out of bounds of that, then there are consequences
because we all know people who are who are not
good drunks, like people who start fights and people who
act crazy. Correct those people. Sorry, sorry buddy, you get

(35:51):
kicked out of the stadium. In fact, you can be
banned from the stadium. I have no problems, no issues
with that at all, because there is personal responsibility. But
you can't just say, oh, man, I was drunk. Hey,
well so what this is your responsibility.

Speaker 1 (36:06):
And also, like if you're one of these stadiums, all right,
try and encourage people to get in there. Like I
think it was the Astros who a couple of years
ago when they started to speed up the games, decided, well,
you know, we're gonna let alcohol sales go all game.
And it's like, yeah, probably not a great idea. Now,
that's probably not a great idea.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (36:26):
End of the third quarter, seventh inning, whatever the cutoff
time is, make it a cutoff time and then send
people at home safely. But if it's an opportunity to
make a buck, whether it's gambling, alcohol sales, Like if
there's a chance to make a few extra bucks and
you can start selling drinks at the game, just trust
that you got a security staff that gives a rip

(36:46):
and they're going to take care of business.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
If somebody gets out of line. Smack somebody up.

Speaker 3 (36:50):
Yeah, because they're at the end of the day. There
are so many places out in the world where people
are trying to control what other people are are doing, right,
But a lot of times those same people are partaking
in whatever it is that they say in their own
home or on their own free time. So I am

(37:11):
tired of the hypocrisy out here. And if you're gonna
do it, man, if you're gonna be about it, be
about it, and don't sit here and pretend it's just
like how when how when people say, oh my gosh,
that sort of language, and it's like, I just hurt
you at home. Man, don't sit up here and try
to pretend that that that you don't say any any

(37:34):
words that can get you jammed up at work. Now, granted,
we are on the radio, and when you are, whether
you are on terrestrial radio or whether you're on satellite radio,
there are things that are allowed and not allowed. And
that's completely different than trying to publicly shame people for
what they're doing, knowing that you're doing the exact same thing. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:54):
So basically moral of the story is drink response, responsibly,
enjoy your football games. All right, if you want to
get tanked up and make a fool of yourself, do
it at home. Make sure the fire pits off outside.
Nobody wants to see you on the set of back Draft,
we don't.

Speaker 3 (38:07):
Don't. And most of all, remember too that kids are
at the games and sometimes people they go way too far.
And I remember going to games with my with my
granddad right and people were starting to get a little
too rough around and he was like, hey, yo, yo, yo,
excuse me, my grandson's here. And they looked up at

(38:30):
big George he was and they were like, oh, sorry, sorry, sir,
sorry sir.

Speaker 2 (38:34):
Those people are cool about it.

Speaker 1 (38:36):
Yeah, most people understand and they respect and go, yeah,
we got a little outline. But nonetheless, George, where can
people find you? Where can they get you? On social media?

Speaker 3 (38:44):
Oh man? On social media, you can go to at
George Reister w R I G H S T E R.
