is also working the Big Ten Tournamenttoday. Ronnie Fossio is here and Colin
(02:13):
is here as our producer. Asa Tim is working tonight. We have
a great show featuring James Worthy inthe very next segment to talk to somebody
that we always love now some ofyou. It's a little bit of a
controversial call these days because the showis different. When Bill Plashki is here.
(02:34):
I do not do the I'm PetrosPapadakas and I'm twenty six years old
thing as much I guess. WhenBill is here, we catch up on
the air because we haven't seen eachother in a while, and I don't
really do debt or Alive or theWord or the day. You know,
we don't do a lot of thenormal stuff. Yeah, you do you
(02:54):
head in the past. I meanwe have, but I find it to
be a a stumbling block when you'rehere from what I actually want to do,
which is just do a state ofthe Los Angeles sports. There's controversy
in my appearance. I didn't.I don't know. Well. What I'm
glad Bill is that you don't reador know how to read the comments on
(03:16):
Twitter. You just know how totweet. Yes, that's exactly right,
Yes, but you don't know howto look at Twitter. I know,
John and fight with people. Iknow how to do it, but I
won't do it. But because it'sit's too negative, it's too right.
I have to do that all thetime. I live in that world.
I live in the space with thepigs and the animals and the dogs of
(03:37):
sports talk radio. Do you haveto engage? I think to a certain
degree, but I don't really engagein that way. I don't fight you
think. Do you think I shouldbe engaging? No? I do not,
But I do think we should introduceyou on the show with the ever
Ronney. Oh gosh, weird loveaffair. So good to see a Bill,
(04:00):
So good to see you, Runnie. Are you so handsome? You're
so hands joining us on the ChevySilverado celebrity guest host microphone. The most
forward thinking columnists we've ever had.His new book, Paradise Found, which
went on sale in November, isa huge hit and may even be made
(04:24):
into a movie, A football Team'sRise from the Ashes. His new column
on Russell Westbrook a hit at BillPlashky on Twitter p L A s k
E. Some remember him from histime as a young person in Louisville,
some for his short stint as amanager on the Baylor basketball team. But
(04:48):
we know him from around the Hornon ESPN, his many novels and books
and nonfiction work, and of coursethe La Times. The most powerful pen
we know. It's Bill Plashki.Hello, Bill, I'm honored to be
your petrol. Thanks for having me. We're happy to have your Bill.
(05:09):
I was unaware there was backlash. No, I mean, look, you
want me to look at it?Do you really want me to do this
now? I will. I don'twant to do this live on the air
now, but I will now.I will tell you something first. You
know what I do for a livingsometimes is I call games with people who
are new to calling football. AtFox, they might be new to calling
(05:31):
game. It's one of your strengths. You kind of you kind of teach
people how to do this, whetherit's a color analyst or a play by
play guy. I'm a little bitof a of a sherpa. I teach
you how to call I teach youhow to call bad football. You want
to know how to call Baylor IowaState deep in November when no one's going
to a bowl game. I'm gonnashow you, and I'm gonna show you
(05:54):
how to do it right. Andyour tree is he's huge. You've got
a lot of come out of youand some dead branches, much like Coach
K's coaching tree. But that beingsaid, what I always would do after
a game because of this new socialmedia world that did not exist when I
first started as a broadcaster. Imean, somebody could make fun of you,
(06:15):
but it would be kind of hardfor it to get to you.
You know, Now it gets toyou within you know, the secondary they
hit send. You can see whatsomebody thinks about you in the moment on
television or on the radio. Butwhat I always would do is, you
know, there is that moment ofinsecurity. Unless you just called a triple
overtime game and people think they didthat, they don't realize that the broadcast
(06:39):
was good because the game was good, you know. So if ever,
you know, you do like athirty to seven game and the game's over
and you're new to broadcasting, youkind of feel a little weird, like,
gosh, you know, is thatokay, did I Did I do
something wrong? And it's like,well, no, you didn't. It's
just a crappy game, you know. And then god forbid, somebody texts
them or they look on Twitter andthey see somebody said something about him.
(07:02):
So what I would always do,especially we're on the road, was you
know, we'd be in the cargoing, you know, somewhere to get
a drink or back to the hotelor to the airport or something, and
I would look up my name onTwitter, and to make everybody feel better,
just read all of the things thatpeople would say about me, like,
oh my god, why is therejust why is Clay faced the blob?
(07:24):
But you know, doing this game, this guy's voice makes me want
to stick my face and a vatof acid. You know, it just
goes on and on and on,and some are really funny and really created.
You know. It's like the oldJimmy Kimmel mean tweets thing, and
it would always disarm the guy,you know, whether it was some college
coach who's being paid twelve million dollarsnot to coach or a guy with a
(07:44):
big ego like DeMarco Murray. Youknow that would always help, you know
what I mean. But I meanI'm not I'm not made of stone.
You know. Say every once ina while one of them gets between your
ribs like a you know, andsee you know and I but that's part
of you know, that's why Ithink life is too short. I mean,
(08:05):
everybody has my phone number, Bill, You know, everybody can text
me whatever they want at any time, you know, so I've had to
get some alligator skin. Now thatbeing said, let me look this up
here. Yeah, no, it'syou know, I get a ton of
reaction because I tweeted out this pictureof you. Of course you didn't retweet
it because you don't know how,and uh, you didn't even promote.
But that's fine, Bill, Wedon't expect that. You know. It's
(08:26):
not because this is around the hornor anything. Uh. And he's beautiful
eyebrows and uh, I think that'sone of my favorite pictures of you.
That photo. You know, youknow what my double ganger isn't that photo
is a dog? Have you seenthat? The dog? Oh? Yes,
I have. Yeah, but that'swhat you look like not like a
(08:46):
dog, but you look like thisguy. Yeah, and uh, let's
should we read the columns the commentson the Uh oh man, maybe we
shouldn't. I can't wait to forBill to read an article he wrote for
Today's paper in its entirety. Okay, well, we are going to talk
about the Russell West. We're gonnahave James Worthy on in the very next
segment, and we're gonna have We'regonna have our own conversation about it as
(09:09):
the show goes on. Maybe he'lltalk so slow that he actually gets Petros
to fall asleep on air, sowe could hear the legendary Petros snoring.
See that's really mean, right, not really? Well, did it hurt?
Did that hurt? We'll see now. This guy sent a picture of
Ted Turner doing the tomahawk chop becauseyou hate the chop so much, and
(09:31):
then all these people chopping at Florida'sso they're creative, you know. Uh,
thanks for the heads up. I'llbe making alternate plans. Now.
That's kind of a d move, right. Somebody called you trash key?
Really yeah, that's pretty I likethat. I want to hear about the
Italian restaurant in Louisville. Again, that's positive. You got that with mister
(09:56):
Plashki, one of my father's finestmoment. Somebody here calls you a liberal,
left wing communist, that's that's allgood. Yeah, you're a commy
I know that. I mean,I can see it. No, I'm
I'm less and less commy as Iget older. But you know it's funny.
Well, look, thanks for theheads up not to listen. We'll
tune in as soon as he's done. There's a lot. Oh, Ronnie
(10:20):
showed some love. You got thatgoing for you. Yeah, I know.
You know. The way I lookat it is as long as you're
reading, I don't care if it'sgood or bad. As long as you're
reading. Everybody loves you. Bill. You're a very likable person and you
deal well with people liking you ornot liking you. Oh, here it
(10:41):
comes the racist chops. Yes,so Atlanta. So, so I haven't
talked to you about my world, the experience in the NLCS, right,
Okay, yeah, you went outthere. I saw your tweets. So
I tweeted about how the braves plaintedshopping mall and also tweeted how we're all
(11:03):
looking forward to going to waffle House. Right. They thought fans thought I
was ripping waffle House. I wasn't. I love waffle House. You're from
the South. The sweet tea's tremendous. I get the I get the I
mean you're from Kentucky. I getthe eggs and ham dice together with with
the hash browns in it. You'remore Southern than Brian Kelly, the head
coaching out like, oh my god, oh Bill. Anyway, I like
(11:28):
waffle House. Everybody thought I hatedit, so they ripped me for waffle
House for the whole series. Thelast game of the series, I get
there, it was a waffle Houseemployee and a waffle iron in the press
room. They're serving waffles to mediain honor of me. And then I
get when I get home, Iget a box from the president of waffle
(11:50):
House of like waffle ingredients and oneof the thank me for, you know,
bringing attention to the waffle. Yeah, I mean, did they send
you like a tomahawk too? Thankyou for that? No, there's no
good winn It's been that they hateme for that. But I think it's
racist. I think it's racist.I think it's insensitive. Well, I
can tell you this as a player. I played at Florida State in nineteen
(12:13):
ninety eight in the height of theirgreatness, Bobby Bowden, Peter Warwick,
Chris Wanky, all those guys, and it is horrifying as a player.
I mean, you feel like theworld's coming down on you, you know.
I mean, you're a pro baseballplayer. It's different, you know,
but nineteen year old college football andyou know. Then the Seminole now
(12:35):
comes out, you know, andit's a whole thing. They have a
it's like the Elion I with Illinois. They have an agreement with the tribe
and all that. So the guy, the seminole guy comes out with a
flaming spear and throws it down onthe fifty And I'll tell you want to
start the bus right then, wellyou get the hell out. For the
record, I believe Chief. He'sgone. The Chief's gone, but there's
(12:56):
still the ALIONI yeah, they stillhave the name. But I do miss
it. Chief. I did go. I went, uh, you're not
gonna like dinything can trivializes an entireculture and I'm not not me seeing this.
The Native American activists over the countryare seeing this. Will you still
do the show for the rest ofthe day. If I tell you that
when I did a game at Illinois, you dance with the Chief, No,
(13:18):
he wasn't there, although that wasavailable. I've totally done it.
But I went looking for the Chiefin the student store and did not make
a scene when I couldn't find him. But was you were looking for the
disappointed? Yeah? No, Iwas disappointed, Bill, you know,
but I just I just think it'syou know, it's a hell of a
thing to say for a guy thatrolled up here today in an Indian motorcycle
(13:41):
and you did I'm just kidding.Anyway, I hate the chop Knda City
chiefs. It's it's so insensive whatthe chiefs is? Chief fans are idiots
were doing it? Raised fans areridiots were doing that? They are?
They're They're just And what about theseminoles? Call them out too? Yes,
I called to end, but theydo have did did you have a
deal with they have? The guyat the Flaming Spirit makes it's all good.
(14:07):
It's worthy's joining us this hour, and the Great David Vasse is going
to join us all right to talkabout the lockout. I'm getting so man
about the lockout. If you listento Matt money Smith on the Pat McAfee
show today, you know he wasscreaming about how great the NFL is and
how stupid baseball is, and howthe lockout is ruining baseball and baseball is
ruining themselves. And we're gonna haveMark McGuire on tomorrow, who's been through
(14:31):
a lot of different things. Yeah, and here is a really good guy.
He's going to join us with DavidVasse. But there is a lockout.
Listen to them down. What's gonnagive it? Rich guys? But
(14:52):
not a lot of progress being madetoday. They did one of those late
nights with all the media types stayingup and acting like they were, you
know, covering war. But thewhole thing's changed today, Petrols. The
whole thing changed. What happened todaynow the boulder with the international draft,
the international draft a whole the wholenarrative changed. I've did it calm last
week for the Only Times, OnlyTimes dot com where I where else do
(15:13):
you write? That's it? ButI got to remind people, so I
did a column ripping the owners.Ripping the owners. It's the whole thing
is their fault, right, that'sall changed because now you're going to rip
the player. Yes, because it'scome down to the international draft. This
is a sticking point what I'm readingon all these tweets and the international draft.
(15:35):
The players don't want it, andthat's guys from Asia, guys from
there, so many because those guysgonna make a lot of money doing that.
My point is, the NBA hasa draft called the International Draft,
and don't call it the international draft, but they draft that for everybody in
the world. If the NBA cando it, why can't baseball do it?
Right? Well? What do theyhold out to try to try to
(15:56):
protect the monitoring interest of of playersin other countries? Instead, it's so
such a small slice of the pie. And it's in the fact that they're
trying to stop the draft that occursin other sports. The NBA doesn't.
Why can't baseball do it? Doesn'tit feel? Though? I Mean,
I don't know, because I'm not. You've been through a lot more of
(16:17):
these and covered them a lot moreclosely than I ever would want to or
could imagine. I can barely evenlook at a receipt, you know,
let alone trying to figure this stuffout. You know, there's a reason
my wife does our finances. Youknow, this is not what I'm good
at in our job, if I'mgood at anything in our job, but
(16:37):
just peripherally and having to interview Daveevery week and listening to Matt and Tim
I don't talk about it. Itfeels like they're getting closer, doesn't it,
or at or is that all just? I mean, there's never been
more information on everything now, andit's never been more confusing and less decipherable.
They're right there, They're right therethe sea, So that's true.
(17:00):
The CV better than balance tax ispretty much what everybody wants. These player
pools, which I don't understand,or what preer arbitration pools, or what
everybody wants, minimum salaries, whateverybody wants. They're holding up, from
what I understand from the tweets I'mreading, they're holding up on the international
draft. And if this stops itfrom getting done today and more games get
canceled, shame on the players. This is on the players, all right?
(17:23):
Well, Bill, what about theseother guys like the media, guys
like John Hayman and stuff that peoplesay just work for the owners. I
mean, it's a very weird kindof dichotomy right with baseball and these guys
that kind of say, like, hey, the owners can hear what you're
saying. It's like, who cares, what are you talking about? Yeah,
but even these guys were saying lastweek it's the owner's fault. You
remember, it's a lockout, nota strike, So the owners are the
(17:45):
ones closing the doors. And Ithink even these I think everybody was universally
against the owners, but I thinknow universally that's that's that that's gonna change.
And in fact, I'm reading atweet right here. If they if
the MLB is given the player associationand another deadline, if the union declines
to be one of the three options, we go in your national draft.
(18:06):
The league belies there's nothing else todiscuss, and more games will get canceled.
It's an international draft. Are youkidding me? Are you joking me?
International drafts gonna stop baseball from beingplayed because it don't be for another
week. Yeah, but still that'sabsurd. The players, the players look
terrible in this, just absolutely terrible. If that's if that's a sticking point.
(18:27):
How much does this hurt I mean, does this hurt baseball? In
our area, everybody, it's stillgonna go to. The bad doesn't hurt
one area, but other places hurtsit does. Yeah, I mean basically,
it's become almost a niche sport.I mean it's it's a regional sport.
Now it's not a national sport.It's it's not a national past time.
It's not even close. It's fourth, NFL, college football second,
(18:52):
NBA's third, Baseball's fourth, it'sfourth, and it's and it's not even
close to the NBA. And Imean, for example, I used to
always cover the World Series as anational Yeah, well that was only out
NLC as my bad Yeah with thechop. Yeah, but yeah, but
I don't do World Series any moreless the Dodgers or Angels are in it,
and Angels would never be in it, so at least not since two
(19:15):
thousand and two. So yeah,Now, did it goes so bad with
Artie Murreno? How did he getso exposed? Like I see that bad
of an owner? No, youknow, I think he he made some
bad decisions with Josh Hamilton with moveOn. You know, they made some
bad they paid and he was oneof the owners they singled out last week
as being one of the ones thatthat wants, that wants the paid lesson
(19:36):
right, one of the cheaper himand the Arizona guy. But they paid
my tried a lot of money. They did that. They give all ty
a lot of money. But youknow, I just think his I think
his his the way his the infrainfrastructure doesn't work down there, and I
think that there is a certain arroganceabout the way he's run, that runs
the team that people don't relate toand they got problem. I mean,
(20:00):
you saw the drug trials several yearsago. That was like a drug haven,
Yeah, in that clubhouse, andso you gotta wonder how long it
was. Troco don't want to stay. You gotta wonder if Otani stays after
this year. I mean, youknow, I mean people, well,
maybe you'll go down to cover that. They will be cries. There will
be cries for Marino to sell theteam eventually. I mean, that's coming
(20:21):
up quick, sooner than later.I wondered, who do you think will
be charged with trying to sell theteam? Who do you think will be
encourage you sell the team first? The buses or arty? Ooh, say,
it's an interesting call because some peoplethink the bus family should get rid
of the team. I was gonnawrite that a couple of years ago.
Well, they certainly haven't shown thattheir ability to kind of do it together
(20:44):
in any kind of consistent way.No, and they're stuck with family.
It's run like a mom and popshop. And that's kind of how arties
is run. Yeah, and youjust don't do that anymore. It doesn't
seem like it's doable or as doableas it used to be. And the
you cool thing about the Lakers beinga mom and pop shop back in the
day was the loyalty. Loyalty andthat doesn't exist there anymore. But you
(21:07):
already got the last roe on themedia we had. They had the best
press boxes all baseball, down rightabove home plate, angels, angels,
right about home play. And hemoved it, he entered it, out,
left it vacant, moved us downto the right field corner. Can't
see the game. He did heso fied you guys, can you believe
how bad so FI is for media? Well, you know what, they
(21:30):
have built it worse. But Ican tell you I love, oh the
game watching experience. I love thefood. The food is disgusting. They
have scrowed them dogs. You arethe old What press box are you?
What's so five? What games areyou talking about? The Rams are Chargers
Chargers? Oh they're okay. TheRams. Food is a little bit.
We'll be right back bench smoking shortand short click Herrett, getting high in
(22:04):

your smart speaker shack. Just sayAlexa ws play AM five seventy l A

fans, part of the most excitingbasketball era the NBA's history, and an
NBA Finals MVP, NBA Finals championmultiple times, and one of the greatest
seventy five basketball players of all time. A Hall of Famer, and he
joins us with the great Bill Plashkifrom the LA Times. It is big
(23:41):
game, James Worthy on PMS.What's crack of James? How are you
all? Good? Gentlemen? Justcruising end to work getting ready for another
episode? The hardest Workingmen in SunnyCalifornia Broadcast and James Worthy, he's there
every night he does, He workshard. Do you find it difficult James
right now? Just knowing who's gonnabe playing with the knee soreness and Lebron
(24:03):
going back and forth. It seemslike this stuff is just gonna plague them
all season. I think our lastgame was our thirty first different lineup that
we've had. We've had thirty onedifferent lineups this year, so you never
know, you know, they stillhave to play the game. But we
(24:29):
don't know who you're going to startwith, and sometimes you don't understand each
other's Tennessee's guys coming off the benchwho are familiar with playing coming off the
bench, they're they're propelled into astarting role. It's a little bit different.
But yeah, it's been a it'sbeen a it's been a you know,
unpredictable year as far as who's goingto be starting, James, I'm
(24:52):
dying to know. And I've beenthinking about this. What do you what's
your opinion of the Russell Westbrook soulbearing? The other night in San Antonio
after the game, we talked aboutthe Westbrook and the family and all that.
Yeah, yeah, you could youcould tell in his play. Uh,
you know the last several weeks thatsomething you know was pent up inside.
(25:15):
You know, this has been adifficult adjustment for Westbrook coming home,
being under the largest microscope he's everbeen under. You know, playing in
Oklahoma, in Houston, in DC, you know, different smaller markets,
but when you come to the Mecca, you know, and your expectation level
(25:37):
is really really high, and thenwhen it's not going, you know,
the way you expect it, andthen people start coming down on you.
On the microscope. And you know, he's a strong guy. But I
don't care how strong you are.You know, some things are just gonna
get to you. So I mean, I was, for one, I
was glad that he, you know, bent it out. It was a
(25:59):
longer press conference than he normally liketo have, and he talked, and
he talks about some things. Sowhether whether he's right or wrong about what
he said, at least he gotit out. And so well, it's
been tough. Well, there's there'sbeen two camps. I wrote this in
the other Times today. There's beentwo camps of opinions on what he said.
Number One, some people think he'she's a deeply wounded man. He's
(26:21):
in a tough position. We needto show him more respect. Other people
people think he's just a big babybecause of the West break thing. He
shouldn't even be so bothered by that. He should just get over that.
Which are you in either camp orbut I you know, I believe both
are truth. I guess I thinkI think for sure, when when when
(26:41):
a team gets booed, you canyou can handle that. But when uh
uh, you're you're you're you're soughtout as an individual and you're at home.
I mean, these are the peopleyou see in the grocery store,
the people you see at the gasstation that I don't know if it's a
big baby, but it's gonna getto you. That's and then you know
(27:02):
when your family starts to get affected. So I kind of look at it
like, I don't think he's ababy, but I think he's a he's
affected by it. And you know, it really didn't want to show it.
It came out and it came outin other ways of expression. So
that's my take on it. Isthere any last question about Westbrook? Is
(27:25):
there any part of you that thinksit just be better if they cut ties
with him and took him out ofthis situation this summer, sent him somewhere
else, you got him, youknow, away from his hometown, away
from his heat, away from thepressure. You know, it just just
doesn't seem to be working for himhere. It's not working now. And
you know, I don't think youknow, cutting and loose. I think
(27:51):
he's got a you know, alike a forty four million dollar contract with
one year left. You know,I don't know who, you know,
you don't know who's gonna want tonegotiate, but it has a click yet,
you know, and so sometimes ittakes year two years for people to
click. But but it shouldn't foryou know, a veteran player who with
(28:14):
with with that, with that kindof elite play. So I know,
coming in playing with Lebron and eight, did you know, uh, all
the expectations was was a bit much? But you know that's a that's a
decision. I don't know. Imean, I'm sure if if they could
find a combination that would make theteam, uh flow better and better for
(28:37):
the team. Yeah, but that'sa that's a big button. You know
what. One more thing I've beenreally interested to get your opinion on is
no, this is good. Thisis This is a softball question, but
it's an interesting thing. What doyou think about winning times? Did you
see it? You know, Ididn't watch it. I didn't even watch
it, Bail, you know,Uh, I wasn't here during that time.
(29:03):
But I lived it, man,I lived it. And so that's
that's my take on it. Peoplecome up to them and say they enjoy
it, that's fine, But Ijust rather just have my memories and and
and and live with it like that. That's like Peewee like it. Yeah,
yeah, it was good. Iwatched it, James, and I
(29:25):
didn't expect to like it at all. You know, I'm from here and
was here during that time, andyou know, I think everything that they
do about LA is a lie,and everything that people say about LA that
even people that live here, peoplethey say things about LA and they have
no idea what they're talking about. But I thought they did a pretty good
job of just kind of just capturingthe vibe of that time in our city
(29:49):
to a certain degree. I mean, the rest of it is just a
cartoon. I mean every everybody,I mean, everybody's acting, you know,
a thousand times projected, you know, like that person I remember I
remember doing I remember doing the interviewwith Perlman. I remember doing the interview.
So I you know, we've haddiscussions about before the before the movie.
(30:11):
But yeah, yeah, it portrayedJerry West as being complete wacko,
and I think there was I thinkthat that was you know, you know,
Jerry's very intense, but I thinkit was a little bit a lot
over the top on Jerry West.I think I think that's what when he
didn't see it, how could hecomment on it. I think that's smart.
James. I didn't see it,but I didn't see it. But
(30:33):
my golfing buddy seat he said,he said something similar to that. Yeah,
they had Jerry West out there onthe golf course just making a mockery
of the riviera. Yeah. Iknow that Jerry. He would never do
that. No, not ever. The great James Worthy is our guest and
there is nobody better than James Worthy. And it is interesting because, you
know, the more time that passes, and it's not like we didn't know
(30:55):
it was special when it was happening. But the Showtime Lakers thing, I
mean, this is gonna be.There's gonna be. I mean, it's
not like there's just one movie thatcame out about ants. Right, there
was Ants, and then there wasBugs, and then there was one thousand
others. I mean, this isgonna spark a whole thing, James,
like Marvel movies. Are you preparedfor that? Yeah? Man, you
(31:17):
know, like I said, Ilived it. Uh and and you know,
as far as my career, andyou know, I've I've expressed and
you know, conveyed, you know, all all the things about what happened
throughout my career and my experience withshow Time. So yeah, I mean
I don't get too I don't getto you know, up or down.
(31:40):
You know, I've I've you know, I've I've reconciled with my life here
in my career, so you know, it's it's television. You know,
I've grown up in Hollywood, SoI don't. I don't you know,
when I go out to take mygolf swing, I don't. Nothing gets
in between my ears. But soyeah, I mean part of life,
you know, and people who enjoythat kind of stuff, that's that's what
(32:04):
they like to do. You know. Maybe I'll come out you know,
on Showtime or something with my ownyou know how it was? Why not?
Why not? But weren't they youknow, before it comes out,
just to make sure I get mypart across. But look, James,
do you find it? Do youfind as you get as as time passes,
that more people, as many peopleknow you for your broadcasting as they
(32:28):
do as a former player. Ithink it's kept it's kept me relevant,
especially with the younger crowd and forthose who uh were there with me uh
during during the time. You know, we just remember the memories and recall.
It's always It's always nice to beappreciated, you know, when you're
(32:51):
in al four in the grocery storeand somebody say, hey, I remember
in nineteen eighty seven when you didthis, you did that. You know,
that's that's always cool. But butbut yes, I mean, I'm
what thirty seven years removed from playingand people have kind of gravitated to you
know what I don't on TV,uh, you know, along with some
(33:13):
of the members of the of theGood Old Days, you know, And
I think that that's a real tributeto you that you were able to to
reconstruct yourself and reinvent yourself like that. I think that's very that's very hard
to do it. A lot ofpeople try to do it and they can't
pull it off. I think youpulled it off. Yeah, yeah,
it's it's you know, it's youcan't replace a career, especially you know,
(33:34):
if you if you had a successfulone. But you know, Bill
Watson used to always say, youknow, basketball is is what I did
for a living, but it's notwho I am. So when I heard
him say that some twenty some yearsago, I always that always stuck with
me. Kind of reminded me,you know where I'm from and you know,
life is life, and that's it. Keep moving on. James Worthy,
(34:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, everybody loves biggame James Spectrum Sportsnet tonight. If
the Lakers ever get a consistent lineup, maybe they'll have some consistency down the
stretch. But we won't make We'renot gonna make James go through those gymnastics
today. We love it. James. Thanks James, a great show tonight.
(34:21):
There he goes, James Worthy,Ladies and Gentlemen, Brought to you
by your Southern California Ford Dealers. It's for truck Month. Stop by a
local Ford dealer and let them helpyou custom order a new twenty twenty f
one fifty. Get great offers onFord f series, America's best selling trucks
forty five years straight. Colin's voicechanges when he does those things. Yeah,
(34:44):
he's a Colin is a play byplay man. Yeah he sounds like
it. Yeah, are you doing? I get excited, Bill, when
I, uh, they asked meto do this read I got excited.
So that's probably why I changed alittle. You know, it sounds good,
he sounds everything is old lit Wayattitudes. A little person changes Yeah,
happens in sports talk radio. Guysget on the phone with a guest
(35:06):
you know there. Hey, hello, mister schefter, I'd like to put
you on the air. I'm gonnaput you on the old Why are you
playing this song? My favorite thingsabout John Coltrane why not you got a
problem with No? No, it'sit's sound amusing. I know that.
Definitely thought that thought about John Coltrane'smost famous song. Is it really?
(35:30):
Yes? And James Worthy really likesjazz, so we tried to play a
little jazz ensemble for him make himfeel good. He likes this progressive kind
of jazz. You know, he'sreally good too. On he doesn't it's
a great job. He's honest. It's not that he wasn't always that way,
but he's really developed that media personaand he's himself while he does it.
(35:52):
He's got a great voice. Yeah, he sounds great, but he
wasn't like he was a little moreraw when I first met him over at
Prime Ticket. Do you believe hedidn't watch the Yeah, I believe that.
I think the leakers are. They'reall acting like it's it's a it's
a plague or something. They wantto watch it, they want to embrace
it. Yeah, I think itis interesting their reaction to it. I
(36:12):
just don't. I think people justreally resent somebody having control over your story.
And I think that there's a bigpart of it that makes a lot
of people uncomfortable for a lot ofyears. And I'm not pointing anybody out
in the media. You can stillplay this today's day and age you got
like doctor Buss wouldn't be that celebratedfor a lot of the stuff that he
(36:36):
did, especially as he got alot older. And I think kind of
taking the carpet off of that forthe first time in a while, after
the me too and after a lotof the things we've been through, I
think makes the Bus family extremely up. One of my enduring memories with doctor
Buss. Of course, I don'tI didn't really call him doctor Buss because
(36:57):
he's you know, he's Jerry.He's Jerry. I mean, it's it's
not you know, the doctor thingis kind of bizarre. But anyway,
so we be standing outside of theleaguer locker room and he'd be walking in
the tunnel going out to his car. He always be surrounded by like five
or six beautiful young young women. And he would slow down of every race,
(37:19):
you know, and he usc likethat. I mean, walk into
a usc baseball game like that. And I was, you know, nineteen,
and I'd be like, you know, these are girls from my age,
you know, And I'd say andI had a weird feeling. I
was just like, is this reallyAnd Everybody's like, oh, you know
this guy, this he knows howto have a good time. He would
slow down, he would slow down, he would slow down and talk to
(37:40):
us. We could see all thewomen. Yeah, and I'm not saying
he wasn't a gregarious and wonderful guy. Obviously, like a lot more fun
to talk to you than a guylike Donald Sterling. But I think there's
a lot of stuff in retrospect youlook back on now. They're not making
it look like that on this show. They're celebrating it as you know,
kind of an extra ex tricity tobe celebrated. But is it. I
(38:02):
don't think he'd be as revered forhis off the court actions as he maybe.
I don't know. We gave KobeOscar for the me too oscars.
I mean we you know, peopleturned their heads, you know, all
kinds of different directions to go throughwhatever gymnastics they want here. No,
but I'm saying now today doctor Busswould not. Oh I agree with That's
what I'm saying. But you neverknow, I mean, because it was
(38:24):
he always got a pass because hewas so beloved by so many people,
because he was such it seems likethat guy that John C. Roddy's plan,
just a guy that from Wyoming andjeans that was worth a lot of
money, that related well with alot of people, had had some very
pronounced devices. So he invited me. I went to his house for lunch
one time later in his life, and it was like big house, Rachel
(38:47):
Santa Fair up here, up here, it's it's it was. I think
it's like platal busin. Yeah.Yeah. So I went there and we
sat and he ordered California ordered,HEPK, he had, he had a
delivered. It was being him thisbig old house. So he seemed kind
of he was slowing down at thatpoint, I think, but he was.
You know, he loved he lovedthe laguers, and he loved entertainment,
(39:10):
and he loved the city. Wecelebrate a lot of entertainers that had
a lot worse things going us.I mean, if we're all going to
sit in judgment here, but itis something interesting to sort of discuss in
retrospect and the answer question. Ithink that makes the bus is a little
uncomfortable because the past is the pastand there's nothing that I can do about
the Genie Genie was it was interestedon the first show. I think she
(39:32):
was younger. It showed her youngerthan she was when she got the first
job. See how that develops. We'll be back with more PM mass.
We're gonna get Dug or Quarion ontomorrow to really tell the truth about showtime.
Are the Rabats is gonna be onthis? I wonder I wonderful short
Genie and Linda ramis Landa Ramas breakingKurt's balls. That's what I want to
see. The Patrols and Bundy Showpodcasted at AM five seventy LAS. Everybody,
(40:16):
What's Crag and welcome back Patch ussome money back on the air.
James Worthy in our last segment withBill Plashkey, I thought he was pretty
honest with you. Bill. Youtry to get him to call Russell Westbrook
a baby, you wouldn't do it. But it's worthy really become a respected
basketball. Absolutely, he's very good. We have the two bests. We
(40:38):
have Dawn McLean and James Worthy.Who else do you want? Robert Orry's
good curse? And asked Jerry bussWest do you have some of those clips
calling? Can we play a couplefor Bill? We did pull some clips
and edit them, you know, from the end from Winning Time. It's
Winning Time. We asked James Worthyabout it. James did not watch it
(41:01):
because much like pee Wee Herman.Do you ever see Pewee's Big Adventure?
No, Bill, I'm not watchingPete Herman because he masturbated in the back
of a Pewee's Big Adventure came outof the eighties. You never saw.
Okay, So a guy whipped itout at the Pussycat Theater, big deal.
We're gonna blackball him for the restof his life because he grabbed his
bootzo. He doesn't interest me,okay, but not because he touched himself.
(41:24):
Well, that was touching himself andwe all show Fred Willard love see
himself. He did. Now.First of all, all those theaters are
closed now, Bill, modern pornhas changed things. Secondly, I'm talking
about Peewee's Big Adventure. The movie. You've never seen it? No,
(41:45):
large, Marge Sentia the whole thing. Well, you don't have to be
a pee Wee Herman guy who haveseen Peewe's Big Adventure was kind of a
big deal, Ronnie, Have youseen Pee' Big Adventure? Absolutely? Thank
you? Colin Yee have you seennow? Hes got son of a bitch?
All right? Point is this atthe end of Peee's Big Adventure.
(42:05):
His adventure was in fact so bigthat they made a movie about his life.
And he's at the movie at theend of the movie, at the
drive end, and he just leaves. Is he whipping it out? No?
No, I'm telling you, I'mtaking that out of my mind.
I can't get out of my mind. As he's leaving the film, much
(42:28):
like James Worthy, you know, the guy goes, you know, don't
you want to see the movie? You know, don't you want to see
you know, the movie Peewee? And he goes see it, I lived
it? And his very Peee Hermanmoment when James that's what I thought of
Ronnie, I don't know. Tome, that's when you know, when
somebody says I lived it, BigAdventure, you can't believe Worthy wouldn't want
(42:50):
to see it. I can't believehe won't watch it. I can't.
I can't believe the Lakers are tryingto ignore it. The Lakers are all
trying to ignore it. Well, that's the interesting thing to me, because
I thought Perelman, who is impressedwith himself, we have no we have
no lack of people in the sportsmedia that are deeply impressed with themselves.
We've got a lot of them, some very close to us, and we
(43:14):
love them all. But that beingsaid, Pearlman said that Magic Johnson said
that he wasn't going to watch this, and Perelman made a great point.
He said, Magic Johnson can't gointo a restaurant without literally going and saying
hi to everybody and showing them thatMagic Johnson is at the restaurant. There
is no way in hell that Magicis going to be able to resist the
(43:37):
temptation to watch the story of hislife unfold on HBO in front of the
entire world. I mean, we'reall a little bit self involved, but
I don't think any of us arethat tough to where we could ignore that.
But Worthy said he didn't watch it. Maybe he didn't. I believe
(43:57):
it no, no, he stillbelievable. But I bet he'll eventually watch
it. What do you think aboutit? I enjoyed it. I enjoyed
it for what it was. Imean, it was funny as hell.
And we've been we've been playing JerryWest clips the whole just laughing. Our
heir places I there calling. Iknow you don't like it, Bill,
but I mean it's just you know, it's head coach of the Lakers basketball
(44:17):
legend. I considered a true gentlemanof the sport. Everyone who does not
know him. In his playing years, he led the team to the finals
against the Celtics six years in arow, six losses. Last time he
(44:38):
played so great they made an MVP, still lost him beating That was my
proma head. I thought it wasgreat. When he retired, they made
his silhouette the logo of the league. I think that made me happy.
(45:00):
Doesn't let me go talk. Iwas having conversation Bill Sharmans. If you
want Jerry well, hell, comeon over. You're about to warn the
streak of a team. You reallywant to know what's wrong with Johnson?
Lay it on me. One thing, he's too tall. I thought it
was really funny. I thought JerryBuss, John c Riley did a tremendous
(45:23):
that's doctor Bud, Norm Nixon.Norm Nixon was great. Kareem, they
had the White Party, Donald Stroone, I've been to the White Party.
I've seen Kareem say that to children. Oh, Kareem. They had Kareema
screams horrible to deal with. ButI thought West he curses a lot,
he talks fast, He's insecure, but he's not over the top like that.
(45:45):
He doesn't break No, he doesn'tbreak things. He doesn't. He
didn't embarrass himself. He's he's moreof a you know, dark depressing,
kind of brooding, kind of Batmankind of yeah, kind of upset literally
like Batman. Yeah, I Ithought that. So I thought I didn't
do Jerry West us. I thoughtit was he made him a cartoon fell.
We have ten more episodes to watchJerry break everywhere four. But I
(46:09):
thought, you make a good point. Kareem was was perfect because cafect dreams
like that. Perfect. Jerry Busswas perfect. I thought Jeannie Buss looked
a little She wasn't that young whenshe got the job. She's a little
more savvy, yeah, a littlemore Manhattan beat savvy at that point in
their life, not as much ofa usc Miss Palisade school Girl. Yeah,
(46:30):
so I thought that was a littlebit. Are you gonna watch Peebe's
Big Adventure? It's really good,He's like, really, it's a good
movie, all right. It's likea critically it's a good movie. Somebody
steals his bike and he's gotta findit. Takes you to the dinosaurs and
palm springs, all over all thesekitschy places. I just came. He
got the girls with the pointy boobslike the sixties. However, have a
(46:52):
hard time watching him just because hewhipped out his pootzo one time. You
weren't even there, Thank god,it's not all he put it on your
shoulder while you were watching the movie. There'd be some poots you put it
on my shoulder. Now, doyou remember the old Pussycat Theater on a
second Street in Santa Monica? No, well, you know third Street,
(47:12):
the promenade it was then it becamea Then it became like an independent movie
theater like the New Art you know, over on a Santa Monica boulevard like
that. I don't know what itis now. I don't think we said
before. There there's no more porntheaters out there. No, it's a
shame. I think there's one inOakland. We gotta go. One time
(47:36):
I was leaving. I was leavinga Jack London Square after calling a cow
game, you know, the nightbefore six am flight, driving out five
thirty, driving through downtown Oakland fivethirty in the morning on a Sunday,
and saw guy walking out of theporn theater all along. That's America.
