let's talk about football from yesterday.It was a great game. It was
a lot of fun. And youknow, whenever the Chargers play and it's
close, there's a lot of conversation. We love conversation. In these parts.
We have to have it. Ifthere was no such thing as conversation,

us talking. It's that simple,but coaching pro football not simple. And

Petrol Smack? Great to be withyou, guys, Oh, it's great
to be with you. First andforemost, just how hard is it to
go on the road in the NFLand get a win? I mean,
no matter what happens, you getdown fourteen, you get up fourteen.
It feels like it always comes downto the last few seconds. Yeah,
pets, they're all really challenging,as you're seeing around the league. It's

just it's a tough lead right now, you know, and I think it's
tight. It's just it's week theweek in terms of the matchup, injuries,
all that good stuff, and youknow, that's a really tough environment
that we just played in. They'rean excellent team. I think they're going
to have a really good season ifthey can stay healthy. You know,
they'll get their quarterback back. ButI think we showed a lot of guts
yesterday, a lot of toughness.I thought it was a rugged win.

It was a team win, andyou know, I think leaving that place,
we're a lot better team than whenwe got there. I know opponents
play into it. I would assumethey do, Coach, But back to
back weeks now, yet you hada rough go with the run game the
first three weeks, at least statisticallyspeaking, last two weeks have been much
better. Yesterday one of the bestthat we've seen in a couple of years
from that run attack. What wasworking yesterday? Yeah, Matt, I

mean you and I've had the discussions. I think us just having more time
on task together. I think figuringout who's blocking and who's running, and
what fits our group best. Youknow, the team that we started with
at the beginning of the season isnot the one that we have right now.
And I think just getting that thosereps together has really helped. And

outstanding run game plan yesterday, butour our players gave life to that plan.
Our old line yesterday was coming offthe football or tight ends. You
know, those guys had a reallybig match up yesterday, as you guys
know, with Clowney and Garrett andthen you know the running backs. You
guys saw the way they ran petrosyour old position, I mean Austin and
Josh Kelly, they were on oneyesterday. So it was just a team

effort. For us to go forover two thirty was huge for our team
and that's the way we you know, wanted to play going into that game,
and our guys made it happen.You mentioned Josh Kelly, coach.
We've been talking to Joshua for years. He first transferred down from from Davis.
One of our absolute favorite players we'veever talked to out of UCLA.
You know the positivity he carries.You know, last year, a couple

of games he's inactive and he's fightingfor a roster spot, you know,
on the active roster coming into thisyear, and man, he just looks
like a different guy. The wayhe's running. What's different about him that
you've noticed this? You're just evenlike body, how he's running. What's
happening with Josh that we had notseen the previous couple years here, you
know, Man, I think it'sjust the culmination of learning how to be
a pro and what it takes.And I know him talking to Josh is

just a confidence knowing that he cando it. I think he had full
investment in the offseason and pouring intohis body, came back stronger, faster,
more explosive, understanding the playbook,being a complete running back in terms
of running the ball, past protection, past receiving special teams. And you
guys know, he had an outstandingpreseason, you know, training camp,

preseason, and he's really taking itto the regular season. And like I
told the team this morning, he'searned more PT you know, as my
dad used to say, he's earningmore PT with every time he goes out
there. And now he's got tokeep keep it working, you know,
because I think once you feel thatconfidence as a player, you don't ever
want to lose that feeling. Andhe was outstanding yesterday and just his energy,

Matt, that he's playing with him, and often those guys really really
set the tone for us yesterday.Speaking of setting the tone, I mean,
you've always been an aggressive play caller. We've seen that. The fourth
down decision to to to try tohang onto the ball h ended up working
out. The defense stopped him prettywell and they were out of timeouts and
couldn't get a great look at thatfield goal. I guess. But when

that happens and those situations kind ofarise and you've got to kind of explain
yourself over and over again. Doesis it get tedious for you or is
it just something that's part of thepersonality this team that you're gonna have to
kind of grain into everybody's mind.Yeah, Petrol, So I think it's
just the nature of the job inthe in the role, and you know,

I don't ever get tired of itbecause it's post sports and you want
to be able to explain yourself.These these decisions are important, and I
think every game is different, likeI've told you, guys, and each
decision has a life of its own. But going into that game, the
way our offense was playing, youknow, in the matchups that we had,
I felt like that was the best, you know, decision for our
team and uh and you also knowthat you know, if if it happens

the way it did yesterday where itdoesn't go down, that that you have
a defense that you can trust tocover them and get them stopped. And
you know, forced it to bea really challenging field goal. And that's
exactly what we did. And Ithought, that's what I said to you
guys about leaving that field a betterteam, because it took for a team
in order to win that game.You know, play that game with a
backup kicker, and it's just everybodywas holding the rope yesterday for us.

And you know, I'm really proudof our football team, that's for sure.
I would love to know a coachif you don't mind, you know,
taking everyone listening kind of behind thecurtain you had. You tried to
draw them off, and then youcalled the time out, and then the
offense goes back out and runs thatfourth and two play. When do you
decide you're going to go for iton fourth down? On third down?
And that's the way you designed thethird so you already had that all planned

out, that was done. Whenwhen Austin tried to run or when horbor
I don't remember who it was ittried to run to get the first down.
You were already going forward. Yeah, So on second down and we
knew what play we wanted to goon third down. On third and you
know one and a half two,we wanted to get a run our po
type play up there that we feltlike could could split an eight man front
and then maybe take advantage of anisolation with Mike uh And we said,

hey, if this, you know, if we don't go backwards, then
hey, if it's fourth and inches, this is what we're gonna do.
If it's fourth and where we are, this is what we're gonna do.
So we had those plays, youknow, in our in our back pocket,
try to get him to jump offsides because you know, it's just
a smart thing to do strategically,see if you can get a cheap one

go on the road in the NFLand get a win? I mean,
no matter what happens, you getdown fourteen, you get up fourteen.
It feels like it always comes downto the last few seconds. Yeah,
pets, they're all really challenging,as you're seeing around the league. It's

just it's a tough lead right now, you know, and I think it's
tight. It's just it's week theweek in terms of the matchup, injuries,
all that good stuff, and youknow, that's a really tough environment
that we just played in. They'rean excellent team. I think they're going
to have a really good season ifthey can stay healthy. You know,
they'll get their quarterback back. ButI think we showed a lot of guts
yesterday, a lot of toughness.I thought it was a rugged win.

Josh Kelly, they were on oneyesterday. So it was just a team

effort. For us to go forover two thirty was huge for our team
and that's the way we you know, wanted to play going into that game,

We've been talking to Joshua for years. He first transferred down from from Davis.
One of our absolute favorite players we'veever talked to out of UCLA.
You know the positivity he carries.You know, last year, a couple

of games he's inactive and he's fightingfor a roster spot, you know,
on the active roster coming into thisyear, and man, he just looks
like a different guy. The wayhe's running. What's different about him that
you've noticed this? You're just evenlike body, how he's running. What's
happening with Josh that we had notseen the previous couple years here, you
know, Man, I think it'sjust the culmination of learning how to be
a pro and what it takes.And I know him talking to Josh is

just a confidence knowing that he cando it. I think he had full
investment in the offseason and pouring intohis body, came back stronger, faster,
more explosive, understanding the playbook,being a complete running back in terms
of running the ball, past protection, past receiving special teams. And you
guys know, he had an outstandingpreseason, you know, training camp,

preseason, and he's really taking itto the regular season. And like I
told the team this morning, he'searned more PT you know, as my
dad used to say, he's earningmore PT with every time he goes out
there. And now he's got tokeep keep it working, you know,
because I think once you feel thatconfidence as a player, you don't ever
want to lose that feeling. Andhe was outstanding yesterday and just his energy,

Matt, that he's playing with him, and often those guys really really
set the tone for us yesterday.Speaking of setting the tone, I mean,
you've always been an aggressive play caller. We've seen that. The fourth
down decision to to to try tohang onto the ball h ended up working
out. The defense stopped him prettywell and they were out of timeouts and
couldn't get a great look at thatfield goal. I guess. But when

that happens and those situations kind ofarise and you've got to kind of explain
yourself over and over again. Doesis it get tedious for you or is
it just something that's part of thepersonality this team that you're gonna have to

I don't ever get tired of itbecause it's post sports and you want
to be able to explain yourself.These these decisions are important, and I
think every game is different, likeI've told you, guys, and each
decision has a life of its own. But going into that game, the
way our offense was playing, youknow, in the matchups that we had,
I felt like that was the best, you know, decision for our
team and uh and you also knowthat you know, if if it happens

the way it did yesterday where itdoesn't go down, that that you have
a defense that you can trust tocover them and get them stopped. And
you know, forced it to bea really challenging field goal. And that's
exactly what we did. And Ithought, that's what I said to you
guys about leaving that field a betterteam, because it took for a team
in order to win that game.You know, play that game with a
backup kicker, and it's just everybodywas holding the rope yesterday for us.

And you know, I'm really proudof our football team, that's for sure.
I would love to know a coachif you don't mind, you know,

draw them off, and then youcalled the time out, and then the
offense goes back out and runs thatfourth and two play. When do you
decide you're going to go for iton fourth down? On third down?
And that's the way you designed thethird so you already had that all planned

You were already going forward. Yeah, So on second down and we
knew what play we wanted to goon third down. On third and you

and then maybe take advantage of anisolation with Mike uh And we said,

hey, if this, you know, if we don't go backwards, then
hey, if it's fourth and inches, this is what we're gonna do.
If it's fourth and where we are, this is what we're gonna do.
So we had those plays, youknow, in our in our back pocket,
try to get him to jump offsides because you know, it's just
a smart thing to do strategically,see if you can get a cheap one
and then just take some time toyou know, to get to get your

your group ready and go out thereand execute. So you know, that
was the process, and you knowwe'll do it again. How do you
measure out long week, short week, you know with the Monday night football
game. Yeah, butch us,I think when you do get the long
week. You want to make surethat you take advantage of it, but
that it doesn't become a long weekbecause you'd be surprised, like what one

extra day does to these players,Like it could feel like two weeks,
you know, if you just givethem like one extra day. So just
trying to manage their their practice weekthe right way, where you get the
right you get the right practice amountand the right rest amount. You know,
we're gonna treat Wednesday as Wednesday andthen Thursday, We're gonna give them
another day so that we kind ofgo Tuesday off, Wednesday practice, Thursday

off, then get into the gameweek just so that we can keep them
in rhythm but also get them rested. So it's part of it. As
you guys know, just getting theseguys healthy to the game is, if
not the most important, one ofthe most important things you can do.
You you mentioned for people that don'tknow the name, and there's really you
know, you'd really have to bea football junkie to know the name Taylor

Burtlett. But bertlet you have Dustincomes down with a quad on Tuesday,
kind of walk us through because it'sthe only position I think it can happen
to right, someone that's not ona roster and hasn't been on a roster
save practice squads, had never playedin a regular season NFL game, played

go out there and get you twelvepoints, three field goals, three extra
points and he had never played inan NFL game before. Just how wild
a story that is and the jobthat you know, Tom and Jojo and
that whole staff did figuring out,Yeah, we trust this guy in a

mean he said it. It's ateam effort. You know, he talks
to Tom, Joejoe, Lou Clark, Denny Abraham, our pro scouts,

kickers that have had to go outthere and play, and how important it
is and you know, you sawa couple of games yesterday that were decided,

watched my son give you know,maybe about three quarter speed effort, and
then I did the challenge and thenI came home. And what I should
have done is taking a gummy andgo to bed. But what you did.
But what I did was I watchedSherlock Holmes brit Box for two hours.

including just peanut butter. Like theDifferent Strokes episode where Dana Plateau had bulimia.
It was bad. And uh yeah, I just did not feel great
about myself this morning. What aboutthe bourbon? I had two drinks,

morning? You know, it allevens out, I guess, but uh
yeah, anyway, we're just playingfor the tie. That's my machine.
