Speaker 1 (00:01):
Okay, here we go, Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete the Big
Friday Show on AM five seventy LA Sports. All right, Rodney,
Uh are you dry? How's the weather?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Uh? Yeah, I'm trying to stay dry, Fred, I'm trying
to stay dry and trying to uh like, look, you
have you have you have dogs or dog? Right? So
I have a course of a couple of dogs, and
and I got one that actually likes the rain and
the cold and all that kind of stuff. And they

(00:34):
got one that doesn't want to go outside at all,
and so I've got to force force one of them
to go outside. So that was a chore yesterday and
today and this morning it's trying to get my dog
to go outside to go to the bathroom, because certainly
I don't want them to go to the bathroom inside. Fred,
we can't have that. But yeah, no, stay in dry man,
stay dry. And uh, you know, as we talk about

(00:57):
in California and and and I know the rest of
the country is jealous of us because it never rains
in southern California is what the song says. But we
got a lot of rain and we always as much
as you know, people don't like to drive and people
don't like other people driving in the rain. California needs rain,
especially La needs rain, and so at the end of

(01:20):
the day, it's a good thing. But man, we don't
see this very often where it rains multiple days like this.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, and once it's supposed to end, that's what I
want to know.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, that's a good question. I think it ends. I
think I think we it's subsides. Tomorrow I think is
the day.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
It's that long.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, yeah, I think it keeps going a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, well tomorrow one hundred percent chance of rain. So okay, Yeah,
well hit Sunday. It'll be better. Sunday will be all right.
Be okay, be careful driving. We know people are paralyzed
when they drive in the rain. It's something that we
don't see very often. It's like God is crying on
us and we don't know what to do. But be careful,
don't rush, and get to wherever you're going safely. Three

(02:02):
hour program for us today. Vinnie bon Signor will be
on the show during the two o'clock hour. Dan Whitey's
gonna jump on during the noon hour. I'm sorry, during
the one o'clock hour. Okay, let's talk Dodgers now, and
we wanted to get to this yesterday. Let's talk about
next year. And at this point in time, as we
approach the winter meetings, everybody's got to have something to

(02:23):
write about, right, So the writers are writing about things
that we've probably talked about two months ago because we
do it every day, and they play catch up a
lot of the time, nationally, not the local guys.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, they go around every single team. They got to
cover every single team. We focus on the Dodgers, no offense,
Angel fans Kevin. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Well, although we didn't mention this, the Angels made an
interesting Taylor Ward is gone. Yeah. For Grayson Rodriguez, the
right handed pitcher. Now he's wanted the better players, better hitters.
I like him, he got I like him a lot. Actually,
he is the Rodney. The thing is this, The thing

(03:05):
is this. They got Grayson Rodriguez. Now, the Orioles picked him,
and he was projected to be great, I mean, a
real stud and probably could be if his arm function properly.
But he's been hurt a couple of years and he
may not really be effective until twenty twenty six. But
he's under club control, so if he comes back from

(03:27):
another arm injury. He could be a pretty good pickup.
And he is under club control, so that's really interesting.
Now they did give up a lot a hitter.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Taylor Man, Come on, man, he would he had thirty
plus home runs this year. He was He had a
big time year for them. Young player up and coming
could have been like the air parent to Mike Trout.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
It's just to me and from what I understand, a
likable guy with the fans as well, there's another one
gets out the door fit.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, yeah, but it's got a guy that can pitch
if he's healthy.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Again, if he's healthy. We've seen what Ward can do.
We've seen Ward was very consistent this year. He had
a phenomenal year. I don't think you just let those
guys walk out the door. I really don't.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
You know, when when you're trying to build something and
you know, and you got an aging superstar, who's gonna
take who's gonna take the man who's gonna take the
baton from Mike Trout? And it could have been Taylor Ward,
but he's gone now.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
So so the Angels made that move. Now let's get
to the Dodgers. So here are the players that are
via MLB dot Com. These guys could be the difference
makers next year for the Dodgers. Their names, you know,
it's just really interesting to hear the perspect and nationally
so these guys could be the difference makers. Rookie Sazaki. Okay,

(05:05):
well that's a shock. Well that's a surprise, roky Suzaki.
He could be a difference maker. Yeah, he really could.
Matter of fact, he was a difference maker this year.
But Sazaki next year is projected to be a starter.
That's why he came. You know, he did what he
needed to do in the playoffs, and keep this in mind,
heading into the playoffs, there was no guarantee he'd even

(05:27):
be on the roster, but he did what he needed
to do. So Rookie Sazaki his starting pitcher next year.
We know that for sure. And very you know, what
do you think in terms of importance as a role
that he had in the postseason when he moved to
the bullpen? How big was that? That was enormous? It

(05:51):
was huge? It really it really was one of the
keys to the Dodgers winning, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yes? I thought, you know, and he had you know,
he didn't have a whole lot. He didn't come in
every game as the closer, but he came in important games,
and just I think the thought, the thought from other
teams of him closing out games, giving his stuff, it
just put a mental picture in other team's mind knowing
that he was he was the guy coming in. Now

(06:19):
that that just gave him something else to think about.
I thought that was not only from a physical standpoint
in what he did, but from a mental standpoint from
other clubs going, oh, now we got to face Azaki,
who's got eight crazy stuff when he's on.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Well, the thing about it is, at least he could
get guys out. I mean, let's just be honest about
Sazaki as a closer. And everybody got really excited. He
wasn't given up the long ball. No, he wasn't giving
up the long ball. And he did what the closer does.
But you see, when you don't have one, all of
a sudden, anybody that does what somebody's supposed to do

(06:54):
becomes even a bigger star. Right, I mean he got
in there and he did it.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah, only issue was walks, right, he gave up a
couple walks here and there, but that was his only issue.
But he was virtually unhittable when he gave me the game.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Now as a starter, you know, he had problems prior
to the injury, staying around the plate. That was the
problem with him, all right, And at times as the closer,
he had a few issues, but overall he was pretty good.
You give him another off season to get ready and
go again, and I got to tell you, I think
he's going to be a pretty good starter. So if

(07:31):
they're saying this guy could be a key, yeah, he
could be a key, but we already.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Know yeah, and he replaces what kershaw right right.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Okay, So there's that. Now another person they're suggesting this
guy could be a key, could be a key, Dalton Rushing. God,
that's a shock. That's a surprise. He could be a key. Yeah,
he will be. They've got him listed as catcher, outfielder. Rodney,
you talked about the fact you might see him on
the end outfield more. Yeah, give him some time out

(08:02):
of the.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Fact that he can play outfield. I think, first of all,
it helps him because the versatility certainly is what the
Dodgers drive on, and they love players that have versatility.
The fact that he can play out field has played
outfield and played it effectively in triple A. I think
it adds to him and his value with the Dodgers

(08:25):
and then as the backup catcher because we all know
for the next what what do you think, Fred three
to four years? Will Smith is going to be the
consistent guy, no question, no question. Yeah, He's going to
catch till his knees won't let him right. And that's
just a question of how many years is that? And
they're not going to catch him one hundred and sixty
two games a year even though no, they're gonna they're

(08:47):
gonna start easing him back. I mean, he caught every
single inning of the World Series, which is kind of
unheard of. And you saw what Toronto did with their
guy Kirk. I mean they took him out the game
and a few of those games where they went extra
innings where they took him out of the game late
and late in the seventh eighth inning and he didn't

(09:08):
play anymore. Will Smith played all First of all, he
played all eighteen innings of that that Game three in
the World Series, and then he played all eleven innings
of the clinching Game seven and hit the home run.
So that's why you leave him in the game. But
he is, he is a workhorse. But I would I
would imagine that they dial him back next year in

(09:30):
the next couple of years and don't and he doesn't
catch as as much as he has done in the
last couple of years.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Yeah, okay, So they'll be playing time there for rushing.
They'll also be playing time in the outfield. They're saying
he'd be one of the keys. Let me give you
the key to rushing. He's got a hit. That's the
key because he's getting his crack right now, Dodgers. Pheley
has a high ceiling. He's going to be with the
big club. You got to hit. You can't hit two
o four because I don't care how good you are.

(10:01):
If you're hitting two four over a period of time,
after they give you that window, that runway, then that
will be it for you. So he's got a hit,
that's the key to rushing. Haisan Kim the infielder. They
say he'll be a key. Yeah, we know, of course
he'll be a key. Now, the Dodgers know much more
about their players than we do. We've looked at observers

(10:24):
and oftentimes through the eyes of fans, but they know
what they're doing, and they did not give him a
lot of run last year. I was surprised. I actually
thought we'd see more of him in the playoffs, just
selfishly because we wanted to see him in the playoffs.
But there was a reason we didn't see him in
the playoffs. He's gonna need to play lightning quick, defensive

(10:48):
wizard and hit the ball pretty well.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Yeah, better than expected, right, because that was the big
knock on him is that how is he going to
handle big league pitching? And that was a question in
spring training, is that he struggled in in spring training
hitting big league pitching. But he actually performed pretty well.
I think he hit like what two to eighty? Yeah
he hit Yeah, he here's somebody else again. What a

(11:13):
shock or what a surprise. You never would have expected this.
River Ryan his back now.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
He missed all of twenty twenty five, he had Tommy John.
He'll be back in twenty twenty six. Could be a
key piece of the club's rotation depth. Yes, he was
a one point three three ERA eighteen strikeouts in twenty innings.
What he was up here adept at avoiding hard contact? Yes,
that's true. He is now the typical young Dodger pitcher.

(11:42):
We got you when we need you. When somebody needs
a break, we'll put you right in there. If everybody
stays relatively healthy, we don't have to expect that much
from you. But we know, given what you did, you've
got the goods. You've got the goods to make it happen.
Here's my question about River Ryan. He's coming back from surgery.

(12:03):
You know, it's you'll know pretty quick, Rodney, You'll know
pretty quick. Is he okay or is he not okay?
To me, that's the only question. Yeah, And that's that's
something that's up in the air. You'd never know.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Some guys come right back and once they've had that
Tommy John, it's like all things are good again. And
then some guys it takes another year or half a
year for them to get back to form.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
So we'll see.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
With River Ryan. I think we'll know, actually said, like
you said, we'll know quick how if he's on track
to get back to form what he is. But I
like the fact that he is an upper nineties thrower.
He's got he's got great stuff, and you know, he's
a guy that you can rely on during that especially

(12:51):
those dog days in the baseball season when you need
extra arms. He could be a guy that can really
perform for you.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
All right, last one we'll talk about here. He could
be a key. That's why this is so funny because
we do it all the time, and you guys, is
my guy, fred I know, but you guys know these
players like the back of your hand. So this is
the national perspective. Alex Freeland and this is your guy. Yeah,
you love him.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
I do. I do play second base, he can play shortstop,
he can play third base. He is a he is
a talent with the glove on the infield. But also
you know, we saw what he could do at the plate.
He went deep a couple of times in critical moments
for the Dodgers. You know, struggled a little bit at

(13:39):
the tail end of his playing time. But man, what
I do love is you know what I always say, Fred,
I like those guys got that dog in him. And
Alex Freeman he has got that dog in him. I
love me some Alex Freeland.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Man, I really do.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
I think he's got the intensity. I think he's got
the attitude and he's a guy that I want on
my team.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yeah, and I know you do. And I think fans
want that too. Here's what else they want. They want
him to hit more than one ninety. Yes, somehow lost
in everything because people did like him so much. Yeah,
he did that.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
I mean he came on like gang Busters, right. I
think he had a couple of big home runs and
a couple of critical games early on, and then from
that point on he struggled a little bit when I
think people start to figure him out a little bit,
and they saw him for you know, a few weeks,
and then they got a book on him and they
went after him that way, and he struggled and he
didn't make the adjustment. But I think give him the offseason,

(14:41):
give him the spring training, he'll be back. And I
think he's a guy you got to look out for
because he is I think he is a I think
he could be a key component for the Dodgers because
he can play multiple positions.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
All right, let's go listen to the mix. Now it's
time for Gavin Stone. Gavin Stone has rehab. He said
he is ready to go one hundred percent and he's
going to be set for spring training. He can It's
been a full year rehab for him, so he is
ready to go. How healthy will he be? That's the question.
How will he come back from surgery? Because if he

(15:15):
comes back and pitches, well, you can add another starting
pitcher to the mix with River Ryan. Gavin Stone will
stay with the Big Club if he if he pitches, well,
not gonna send it.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
Where does that put Imachian.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
In the rotation? I mean, is he gonna re rotation?

Speaker 2 (15:32):
Guy? They're gonna move him to the bullpend What did
they do with Immachian? If Gavin Stone comes back and
he's back to form, and he's all healthy and he
feels good as he's saying, where and you just talked
about River Ryan, where where does Immachian fit into the
mix in terms of rotation?

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Well, right now, I would say Immachian's in whatever the
definition of n is he is.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Okay, So what's your rotation?

Speaker 1 (15:57):
Then? Right, let's figure it out. You're gonna go snell
Yamamoto oh Tani class Now, yeah, that's four locks and
he got Suzaki. Yeah that's five.

Speaker 2 (16:12):
So who did I leave out from between River Ryan,
Emmitt Shean, Gavin Stone? I mean, who else is gonna
be in there? You already got you already got five
with Suzaki put Sazaki is the is the first one
to add to that mix. So that's five. You're gonna
go six man rotation?

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Yeah they will, I think they will. And who is it?
River Ryan? No, Shean's earned the right, I think so too,
gotta be Shean. Yeah, I agree. So if that's the case,
you have River Ryan and you have Gavin Stone ready
to go, ready to go where we're ready to go

(16:52):
if somebody gets hurt, ready to go, if somebody needs
a day off, so ready with.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
A big club or they are they work their way
through triple A until they call them up.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
That's a good question. Look, I think you'd rather have
him pitch than not. Is that fair?

Speaker 2 (17:07):
I would all then, especially River Ryan and Gavin Stone
who missed time last year. I would actually love to
have them, you know, be active in pitching as opposed to,
you know, waiting thirty days between starts. You know you
don't want to do that, you know. So, and then

(17:32):
what are you going to do with Is Will Klein
going to bowin?

Speaker 1 (17:37):
Here's the problem with Will kleinb we all love Will Klein,
you'd say, we all love us and Will Klin I
don't even know if he makes a roster. Yeah, you
don't know. I mean that was an anomaly. That was
that was a dream moment for him. Aside from Mickey
Rojas's home run, Will Klein probably had the second most

(18:00):
memorable moment for a player.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
Seventy of his career, seventy two pitches he threw in
that game, three eighteen inning game, seventy two pitches he threw,
and was phenomenal. That's something you don't forget. That's something
that you give him the benefit of the doubt. So
when you say I don't know if he makes a roster,

(18:23):
he has anyway halfway decent of a spring training. They're
gonna find a way for him to make that roster.
And then that here goes the question we talked about
starting Who's who's left in the bullpen? Because we know
Kirby Yates is gonna be gone, Well, he.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Was going all year. Nobody knew it. Oh was that
my outside voice again? I'm sorry?

Speaker 2 (18:45):
Yeah, Ready, it is Thanksgiving coming up. Come on.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
So Tanner Scott is he going to be the Tanner
Scout of old He'll be in a bullpen.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
We know that.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
There's taught that their look brock Steord, Well, try it
for him. He's got to be out there, doesn't.

Speaker 2 (19:01):
Stewart another one? Yeah, Phillips are gonna get back. Evan
Phillips is gonna come back. Okay, you know, trying back
for another year. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
Robleski Jack Dryer, Jack Tryer is.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
More inning than anybody. Jack Dryer. Uh yeah, real, Bleski.
That's another dog I love. I think other teams in
baseball love that dog too.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
Yeah, they do. I think that'd be a guy you
want to you want to make a deal, won't you
just toss him into the mix. We'll take him too. Yeah.
I think people like him a lot.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
I do too.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
I do too.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
So what do you do with the bullpen? I mean,
there's a lot of there's a lot of arms in there. Vessia, Vessie.
He'll be back. Banda band, he'll be back.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Isn't it funny You start listing off the guys, and
we did this last year before the season. You start
listening off the guys, and all of a sudden, they
all get hurt and then there's nobody.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
I mean, if you just go down the list of
the people we named right now, the Dodgers need absolutely
no pitture, none, They're fine. Yeah, they're good. Don't even
talk about it. Well, we thought the same thing last
year with the bullpen. Remember, these guys are locked and loaded,
they're ready to go. They are jammed up.

Speaker 2 (20:22):
With guys, and they were already good because of the
year before, right, what the bullpen did the year before.
And then they go add Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates.
You're like, oh my god, Dodgers won the World Series
based on their bullpen. Their bullpen came through for him,
so and then they added to it, so it's all good.
And then the bullpen fell apart. Guys got hurt, they

(20:47):
didn't perform well, and they had to rely on starting pitching,
which was hurt as well. So they got a lot
of arms though, they got a lot of arms to
deal with.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
So, uh, this weekend tomorrow maybe the biggest football game
USC has played in five years. And we'll talk about
that next.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
Hello, Rogan and Rodney listener, did you know AM five seventy.
LA Sports has a wide range of LA Sports podcasts
shows like Petros in Money. We are streaming Matt Dodger
Talk with David Vasse, The Dodger Podcast of record, Clipper
Talk without a musk, follow us all and many more.
Just go to AM five seventy LA Sports on the

(21:38):
iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Oh yeah, you know what it is. That's right, it's Friday,
and we don't care getting after it. We really are Rodney, Pete,
Fred Rogan on an off and on rainy rain, last
couple of days here in La.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
But all good.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Please please stay safe out there, and if you happen
to get an accident, call our buddy Jacob and Ronnie. Well,
there's only one guy that call. There's only one guy
to call with the new number.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
Eight hundred three four five six seven eight nine. That's easy.
Matter of fact, this is probably the best time to
write that number down. Eight hundred three four five six
seven eight nine. Anything happens to you, call Jacob. He's
right there for you. He'll hook you up, he'll take
care of as All right, this is it, This is it,
and it's it kind of goes back to the good
old days of USC football. They got a shot, you're

(22:37):
telling me, they got a chance. They got a chance.
They ain't got a chance this year, Rodney, they've got
a huge game at number eight. Are again and you
might call it a de facto's college football playoff elimination game.
So it's a must win for Lincoln Riley. And if
they win there and they beat UCLA, they got a shot,

(22:58):
they got a shout out the tournament.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
They do, it's a it's a must win for Lincoln.
I think it's a must win for Oregon too, which
makes it oh yeah, you know, makes it makes it
that much bigger. It's gonna be crazy in Eugene. It's
always a tough place to play, but when Oregon plays USC,
it gets extra loud. But you're right, I think short
of I think going back to his first year here

(23:26):
with with Caleb and them beating Notre Dame to kind
of send them into the pack. I think it was
that year that they sent him into the Pac twelve Championship.
They beat UCLA and they beat Notre Dame send him
into the uh uh, the Pac twelve Championship. This is
the biggest game of his career because those those games

(23:49):
early on with Caleb, it was it was early on
in his tenure at USC. There was not that much
pressure on him, and they were winning and and and
they turned things around. It was exciting and little but
we did know that A lot of that, A lot
of that with Caleb Williams taking the pressure off of
everybody else because he made so many plays when Heisman

(24:10):
Trophy put the team on his back, was phenomenal in
his years here at USC. Since then, there's been up
and down. This is a critical moment where there has
been scrutiny over Lincoln Riley and whether his future is
set here at USC or not. So yeah, this is
the biggest game I think of his head coaching tenure

(24:33):
here at USC for sure.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
Well, the deal is this, if we're being completely honest, Yeah,
you had some success with Caleb Williams, But really I
think overall, if you were being one hundred percent honest,
you would say his time prior to this season at
USC has been disappointing. I don't want to call it
a failure because it wasn't a failure, but it's been
very disappointing. Expectations were much greater for a guy who's

(24:56):
spending ten million dollars a year on that. That was
the big higher and by the way, no one questioned
it when they hired him. So let's be fair, let's
not second guess that higher because everybody thought, oh my god,
this is it.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Yeah, we stole them. We got the guy. Yep, we
got the guy. And you know, there has been what
the talk obviously, and it's been one side of the
ball is has been fantastic since he's been here. It's
that other side of the ball that has struggled. And
they haven't gotten right which is which is the defensive side.

(25:30):
And and Lincoln obviously is an offensive coach, and.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
You know, he was kind of.

Speaker 2 (25:35):
Loyal to a fault early on. And I think he's
got the right guy in there. And so I think
this is a huge game. And I think this this
is a game too where we've seen an Oregon team
that may not be as dominant as they have been

(25:56):
in the last few years.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
I agree with you.

Speaker 2 (25:58):
So if they're beatable, this is the year to go
get them, especially up there.

Speaker 1 (26:02):
You're exactly right. They seem more vulnerable this year. At
least they have seemed more vulnerable this year.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Yeah, I mean they went to the wire. Penn State
should have beat him. They had a week before USC
played Iowa. Iowa had him on the ropes as well,
and so they're fighting for their lives. Though that's another
thing and the thing that they do well is everybody
looks at Oregon as a pass happy team that throws
it all over the lot. But what Oregon does well

(26:31):
is run the football, and what USC doesn't do well
is stop the run. And so that is going to
be the challenging part in this game is how well
USC's defensive front handles Oregon's rushing attack because they are
run first team. As much as Dante More has played

(26:52):
well and he throws it, and they've got great skill guys,
they want to run the football and they want to
be physical with you. And see at times you know
they've been a bend but no break, but at times
they voted up. And they've been very very good defensively
against a good Iowa team last week, and conditions that

(27:12):
favored Iowa actually out here at the coliseum as C's
defense came to play and stopped the very physical Iowa team.
So this is a this is a challenge I think
they can handle. They just can't. They just can't get
behind early in this game because the crowd gets into it.
Then you got to be pass happy and they can't

(27:33):
be balanced. So it's very important that they keep this
game close. Especially in the first half.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
Or let me ask you this. Let's say go sideways.
They get beat all right, let's say they get beat
but then they beat UCLA. That's pretty good year.

Speaker 2 (27:47):
Be nine and three. That pretty good year, right, Yeah,
missed the playoffs, but nine and three.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
Okay, so would you say, my god, that is an
incredible year given going in the over under seven to
five on the number of Wednesday would have before the season.
So you go nine and three, you'll get You'll get
there playing a bowl somewhere, you know, well, the Holiday
Bowl where were they usually play.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
The weed either pulling hand cutting grass Bowl or whatever
it may be. Yeah, somewhere where the people here will
travel to. So they'll play in the bowl. They'll nine
and three.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
They don't make the college football playoffs, but given the
expectation at the beginning of the season, and it wasn't
much if we're to.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
Be there, No, they really wasn't. People didn't have them
anywhere close to where they are now.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I gotta be honest with you. Going into the season,
I thought this was making a breaking for Lincoln Riley.
Now they're not going to fire them because they have
to pay them. But I just thought this is it.
He can't afford to have a bad year. He's got
to show some sort of growth. And that's why I
kept saying they'd look better this year. They seem better
this year, they look bigger this year. They just seem

(28:58):
like a team that would play in the Big Ten
instead of a team that would playing in the Mountain West. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Yeah, And we talked about all season long. I mean
that's what that was the number one thing you kept saying.
All right, they're playing so and so, are they going
to be physical enough? Are they going to be able
to play Big Ten football? And that question about USC
is are they gonna be physical enough to handle the Michigans,
the Michigan States, you know, Iowa's those teams like that

(29:24):
Illinois that play that style of football weekend and week out.
Can you do that as USC And they have, I
mean they have gone through They've gone through a pretty
good schedule. You know, if you think about it, you know,
having to play Michigan and then Michigan State. You know,
obviously Notre Dame got after them a little bit, but

(29:46):
then you know, the Illinois game was closed. They took
the lead with two minutes and had a chance to
win that game, and they played some physical teams Iowa
in that mix. They played some physical teams and went
toe to toe with them. So they they are a
change teams from years past for sure from a physical standpoint.

(30:06):
They got to do it against Oregon. But yeah, I'm
with you though, nine and three. If they if it
goes sideways, and it depends on how it goes sideways, Fred,
if they go sideways where they get blown out, then
you gotta have that pit in your stomach again and going, oh,
we're not quite there yet. Still, we still got a

(30:27):
ways to go. But if it goes sideways, or they
lose close a close game, a one score, last possession
kind of game, that's a different story. They win it,
then they got a shot to be in the playoffs, Fred,
And that's just that. That is something nobody, nobody expected
because they go from what are they fifteenth? Now I

(30:49):
think it's there fifteen. They go from fifteenth to a
playoff birth team because there's gotta be a number of
teams that lose this weekend and next weekend, so it's
a it's a big jump from and it's it's not
that ten and two versus nine and three, Right, that's
one loss. But that's the difference of making the playoffs

(31:11):
and then going to some obscure bowl that you don't
make the playoffs. And they look at it as where
most teams are the nine and three that's a pretty
good year. You think UCLA would take nine and three
this year all over nine and three. But I think
you make a valid point. It's psychologically and I don't

(31:34):
know if people think this way or not, but I
think he nailed it. They go to Oregon. Let's say
they lose a close game, a close game, all right, well,
there's a hell of a battle. They beat UCLA. I
gotta tell you what.

Speaker 1 (31:45):
These guys are right on the cusp, right on the verge.
They're right there, all right. So let's say go sideways
in Oregon and they get blown out. Loss is loss.
But now they get blown out. Then you say, you
know what, they're just not ready. And I think these guys, yeah,
the big one came. And I don't know about this,
even though they be nine and three. So much is

(32:07):
dependent if they lose, how they lose, and the other
side of it is if they win, then people are going,
oh my god, that's it. They're back. Lincoln Riley has
done it. He's a magician. Yeah, he figured it out.
That's why he's there. That one of those two things
is gonna happen. Yeah, one of those two things are
gonna happen. Because as they do win it, and then

(32:28):
they go on and beat Ucla, which you know, hopefully
they can't have a letdown because those games can go
either way. They go be Ucla, you look up and go, really,
the only team that actually beat them was Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (32:45):
Beat them. You know, they had the lead with two
minutes in Illinois and didn't play well actually, and at
that time, Illinois, you know, they were ranked and they
were ranked in the top ten and the week before
they got blown out by Indiana, right, so that that
kind of dropped a little bit. But they were highly
regarded regarded as as as one of the better teams

(33:08):
in the league, especially in the Big Ten, and they went,
you know, up until two minutes and then Illinois drove
down and beat him with a fuel goal. So that's
like you look up and go, yeah, Notre Dame was
really the only game that they got beat. So this
is this is this is big, big, big.

Speaker 1 (33:26):
Big, uh like your front office. Now, please meet the
Dodger front Office. That's next.

Speaker 1 (35:08):
All right, by the way, well you know what we
just mentioned this real quick. You know, earlier we talked
about the fact that the Angels had traded Taylor Ward
for Race and Rodriguez, the pitcher from the Orioles, right,
and that Rodriguez, uh, you know, had been hurt. But boy,
if he's healthy, he's good. Kevin just sent us a note.
The Angels did not request the physical for Rodriguez. They

(35:29):
don't know. They didn't even ask.

Speaker 2 (35:33):
They didn't take physical. Isn't that like standard You gotta
pass the physical before the trade goes through.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
Not for them, it's not. Yeah, you have been hurt
the last two years, and we're gonna give you a
guy that can really play. I mean, Taylor Ward can play.
So here's what we'll do. We know you want Taylor Ward,
we know you want a corner outfielder. Take him and
we'll take Rayson Rodriguez. Well, but he's been hurt the
last two years. You want to give him a physical,
you want to check him out that it's fine. We're good. Yeah,

(36:02):
but I mean he hasn't really played. My dad, we
don't even to waste time on that. We'll just do
this and we'll save money in the process. There you go, there,
there you go, There you go, there you go. That's
the difference. Yeah, Okay, Now talking about baseball Dodgers front office,

(36:23):
we know that they are the best in the business.
And you remember Farhan's iety. When Andrew Freeman took over,
Farhan came down and worked with him. He was the
general manager and Andrew was president of Baseball Operations. So
Farhan left, he went to run the Giants that didn't
go well. Then he came back and he was serving
as a consultant to Mark Walter. I think he was

(36:45):
consulting on the sparks and some other of the holdings
that Mark Walter has.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
Well.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
Now it's been reported, according to sources, after we learned
yesterday that Joey and Jesse Buss took the bus out
of town, they were fired and the scouting department was
basically gone. Guess who's now consulting. Guess who's consulting now
in the Laker front office with far anxiety and Andrew

(37:12):
Friedman shocked. No, but now that that says something. And
Dan Wyke, you'll be on here coming up I'm sure
he'll have more on this, but uh yeah, Andrew Freeman
and Farhanxiety are now working as consultants in the Laker

(37:32):
front office. So apparently it's Andrew and he's talking with
Rob Polinka. So you know, in other words, Rob, you
can use Andrew as a resource. Yeah, call him and
you guys, he'll give you some insight about how we
operate and far.

Speaker 2 (37:48):
Hunt, you know, we're gonna give you a little extra work.
You came back as an advisor. You know, Brannon Gomes
kind of is running things over here. He's got to
got that unlock.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
But we wanted to.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
You know, we like which you did when you were
here with the Dodgers. You know, as you mentioned Fred
San Francisco didn't go well, but we we love what
you do, We love who you are. Come on back
to the Dodgers as an advisor. We'll find a role
for you. Well, they found the role. They found the role.
Farhan is probably going to be more involved than we

(38:19):
all know. And this, this is this might be his
new gig. Does it surprise me?

Speaker 1 (38:27):
Yes? Does it surprise me?

Speaker 3 (38:30):
No?

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Is it surprising when you hear it? Absolutely? What does
Farahan doing there? And if Farhan was great, we wanted Farhan,
came on all the time. Farahan was honest. Everybody loved Farahan.
So you're thinking, what the hell is he doing there? Farahan?
What are you doing? But then you take a step
back and go, oh, we know exactly what you're doing there.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
Now.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
He knows how to run an organization. He knows how
to run an organization. Yeah, that's right. And Mark Walter
trusts him. He and Andrew Freeman are friends, that's the thing.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
He trusts them. He trust him, Andrew Friedman trusts him.
You know, guys don't come back to where they left
unless there's a level of trust, a lot of level
of trust going on. And the fact that it didn't
they Dodgers didn't waste time bringing Varhan back in some
sort of capacity because they like him and they believe

(39:29):
in him. He's got it. He's very sharp and very bright.
So they wanted him on the team and probably we're
we're going to find a role for you. We just
need you in house. And now here we go we
find out that he's actually been in this role, been talking,
been dealing with it, and been advising the Lakers for

(39:51):
a period of time.

Speaker 1 (39:52):
Now isn't that one of the great places to be
when you think about it. In business, you know, you
were here, you did a great job. We bless you
to go on and grow. We want you to that.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
You know, we take pride in that. Go shoot your shot, yeah, goo.

Speaker 1 (40:09):
Go do it, go do it all right? So a
lot of times you let somebody go shoot their shot.
If the shot misses, you don't take him back. A
lot of people are like that, Yeah, you love How
dare you leave us? How dare you leave this situation?
We gave you your shot and you're gonna leave us?

Speaker 4 (40:24):
Now?

Speaker 1 (40:24):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 2 (40:25):
We get out of here?

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Good ridding? Right, seriously. A lot of people are like that,
but not the Dodgers. If he leaves properly, and he did,
and keep in mind, he was running the giants, for
God's sakes. Yeah, he was running the giants. But he
left properly, they did it the right way. Okay, he

(40:47):
becomes available, you know, and this is the place you
want to be in in life. You know what, man,
come on back, come on back. Well, what do you
want me to do? I'm not sure, don't really know yet,
but I know this. You need to be here. So
we're gonna make an advisor and we'll kick stuff around,
will bounce stuff off. We're gonna pay you, but just

(41:10):
be here. We need you here because we like you
and we know what you can do. Okay, all of
a sudden, now he's consulting on the sparks. That's great.
See you're he's consulting on the sparks. He's learning basketball.
He's consulting on the sparks. He's learning basketball. Oh, we

(41:33):
just bought the Lakers. Well, after all, you've been understanding
how basketball works. So why don't you step in over here?

Speaker 2 (41:43):
Now?

Speaker 1 (41:44):
Yeah, get in there and see what you can do there.
It is, there's no way, there is no way they
thought get back here. Far Hn. We'll give you something
to do. Learn about the sparks. We own the sparks.
You get in there and learn about it. And yeah,
you know, with the thought process when we buy the Lakers,

(42:05):
because you knew it was going to be a when
for Mark Walter, not if when we buy the Lakers.
A look, Farhan, you already know about basketball. You've been
consulting on the sparks. Yeah, step right in, come on,
far Huh. They couldn't They could not. They could not

(42:26):
have had that plan in place. They could not have figured,
go learn about basketball with the Sparks. Now we bought
the Lakers. Okay, get in there. Now, let's see what's
going on. They could not have thought that far ahead.
They could not. That would make who would think like
that to put that together like that? You know, when

(42:47):
you have.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
When you surrounded and you have smart people around you,
you want to keep those smart people around you. And again,
like you said, the Dodgers are the best even with
the players. Andrew Freeman told us that, and he's been
on the show several times. Hey, go see what you
can get out there. You know, we're not gonna hold
you back. We want you here, but go see what

(43:11):
you can get on the open market, and if if
it works out for you, we bless it. Go do
your thing, you know, but we want you here, but
I want you to maximize whatever potential you have. And
they said the same thing to Farhan. You got an
opportunity to be GM of the giants, Go go do
your thing. Go do your thing. It didn't work out,

(43:33):
but we still want the smart people in the building.
So when it didn't work out and you're free, Come
on back, Come on back. We hold no grudges. That
is that's why they're so successful.

Speaker 1 (43:51):
Dan White Gill join us next Star I we'll get
more into what's going on with the Lakers when we
come back. You got the super Bowl favorite and the
end VP favorite in town on one team. Is anyone
