(00:00):
And we continue on Fred Rogan Rodneypeat get ready for Thanksgiving A five seventy
LA Sports two hours for us today. So Rodney, let us not delay.
Lakers taking on Dallas last night,a big one over Utah last night.
Welcome on, Dan Whitey, ourinsider from the LA Times and Dan,
Happy Thanksgiving? How are you?Guys? I am great. Happy

(00:23):
Thanksgiving as well to both of youand to the listeners. And guys,
I have to tell you, it'srefreshing when you're around professional athletes and rich
people and famous people. Delay thatand my job forces me to be to
be reminded of the things that makeus, you know, kind of all
the same, sure, and likea love for Thanksgiving is one of those

(00:44):
things. And guys, and afterwatching the Lakers play four and season tournament
games, apparently a lust for fivehundred thousand dollars also, I think that
unites us. All is one,Dan and one And that's my point.
I brought it up earlier. Ithink it's exceptionally exciting that the Lakers are
going to advance to the quarterfinals ofthe in season tournament. Rodney, Yeah,
Rodney, and Kevin bat asked me, what does that mean? And

(01:07):
I responded, honestly, I don'tknow, but I know this. I
think it's good and I think it'sexciting. Do you think this in season
tournament is working so far? Absolutely? I mean, I think it's so.
I've talked to people within the league. I've talked to people within ownership
groups, people in management, players, coaches, et cetera about this thing,
and yeah, I mean I thinkyou know. I mean, look,

(01:29):
could everybody explain it? No?Does everybody know what the trophy is
called? Absolutely not. But Ithink that the league has done a good
job. I know when an ndseason tournament game is playing, because it
looks like my TV is gone insane. You know, I think they've done
a good job marketing it, likethe Michael Imperial League heist commercial, but

(01:55):
you haven't seen it is awesome. It's a great spot. And then and
then now, you know, oncewe get out of this pool play phase,
it like now it just becomes atournament that like a single elimination tournament,
and we're all exposed the single eliminationbasketball tournament. We all know what
that looks like. You know whatI mean, The Lakers will play a
quarterfinal game. The confusion over theschedule, like, should they lose and

(02:21):
they will play another regular season gameat the end of the week instead of
the semi final in Vegas, It'slike, that's not for anyone else to
worry about, Like what, like, I'll handle that, you know,
let the traveling secretary figure that out. All the public should care about is
that the Lakers have won a game. They are now in a position to
play in another tournament. Now thereal tournament starts, right the courts will

(02:44):
stay insane. They will play onemore game at home. If should they
win that they are off to Vegasfor the semi finals. Then who do
they play? We don't know. That's what I wanted to know. That
they forgot the George Washington sketch.Fro mcgovery's who can say it's impossible it
is. We will know whence Poolplay completely wraps up. The Lakers are

(03:07):
overachievers. They finished, you know, they're done with their games. There'll
be more turnament games, I believeon Friday. Oh I'm more. I
mean I think it could be Phoenix, it could be Sacramento, could be
Minnesota, chances could be Denver.Yeah, greatheart, Yeah, and we
still don't know. You don't winthe trophy. Guy, Guys, the

(03:29):
road to the trophy that no onecan name is not a not an easy
and the strongest can can can bringhome the cup that will someday assuredly be
named after the Timberwolves and the gamesI would tell people to watch is watch
Timberwolves and Sacramento, see what happens, because one of those teams is going

(03:52):
to win their group. And thenthen after that, I think the the
Sons of a game against Portland thatif they win in a low out could
put them in position to be thewild card team, which the Lakers seemingly
will be the number one seed inthe West because of their exceptional point differential.

(04:12):
They're like plus seventy four in tournamentgames and then their three tournament went
or four tournament wins, and sothen they will they will host whoever the
wild card is, which is theteam at the best record, and then
all the fiam up tab breakers ofteams that did not win the group.
Rolls off the tongue, guys, easy breezing alight, it rolls off the

(04:35):
tongue. Dan is uh Lebron's minuteslast night that was good to see.
Twenty four minutes a d I thinkat twenty nine minutes. Is that something
that they want to try to leanto where they can have games like that
every you know, every two orthree so teams. Yeah, yeah,
they would love to blow teams outright me, like honestly, like,

(04:56):
I mean right, like this islike as good as it, as good
as a night can go. Withthe exception of Camradish injuring his groin,
he won't play it night against Dallas, But yes, you would love to
reduce the stress on these Lebron minutes. And to me, it is one
of the kind of like questions that'slingering about the start for the Lakers.
The Lakers now three games over fivehundred. I believe managed six is playing

(05:18):
pre good basketball right now, butgranted not playing the world's hardest schedule of
all time, I think it's fairto say it has been like sort of
like, you know, they reallyneeded Lebron to play pretty well to get
to this point, and you know, my colleague Jian Hernandez sort of wrote
about that is like, you know, is that sustainable? Like does that

(05:39):
show you that you know, thisteam is gonna have to find other ways
and you know, eventually you know, certainly once when things get when things
get harder, you know, canthey can they do this? I don't
know, you know, I meanI think guys, Lebron is at a
level right now that is I meanme say this all the time, but
like I mean, the guy,you can just mark it down in pen

(06:00):
pretty much. He's gonna score twentypoints. He's gonna be over fifty percent
shooting, and he's completely changed theway that he plays. He's gone from
a guy that was like his athleticismwas just unmatched to now a guy who's
so much stronger, you know, going through players more than around them or
over them. And you know he'sshooting. The lights are right now.

(06:23):
He's playing incredible basketball. So becauseof there are limited minutes last night,
it is a back to back,it's a home back to back, so
I don't count it as a backto back. I count it, yeah,
I mean, I think we'll seethose guys tonight. I mean,
it would it would stack as likea conceivable quote unquote rest night for for

(06:45):
Lebron James. I think it wouldbe a I think it would be a
thing where sorry, my son justwalked in, guys, I apologize he
was out at the store. Ithink, uh tis the season. Guys.
What kind of a father would Ibe if I just said get out
of here, son, Dandy's working? What what? What? Horrible?
Bad? Would I say? Keepit? Doubt I'm on the phone.

(07:06):
I would never. I would neverdo that and then lock the door.
Guys, But I think you knowwhat was I saying. I totally forgot.
I'm sorry, No, it wasthe back to back and this might
be a situation. Yeah, yeah, I think it might be a res
situation with the road if they havecoming up. They have a pretty tough
trip. They fly to Cleveland onFriday, play there Saturday, playing Philly

(07:31):
on Monday, Detroit on Wednesday,Oklahoma City on Thursday. And this is
going to be a pretty hellish nextthree or four weeks of schedule for them
there on the road a lot.Now you add the n seasoned tournament stuff
in there too. But I mean, he's I'm playing, He's wanted to

(07:53):
play, and he always wants toplay, So I would not be I
would not be stunted all lebron jawson the courtunate. I expect to have
to for sure. Yeah. Amark Stein reported that Zach Lavine trade.
You know, roamers talks, allthat stuff is kind of put on hold
right now. Is that the casethat they're just focused on getting guys like

(08:13):
Vincent and Vanderbilt back healthy and thenwe'll see how it goes into the trade
deadline? Yeah, I mean, look like so you know, and I
wrote about this like for one, like the Lakers like legally, like because
of the way their contracts are setup with the guys they sign in this
summer's agency, like they can't makea trade yet, like those players who
sound of reading are eligible to betraded to the middle of December, and

(08:35):
then another handful of them are eligibleto be traded to the middle of January.
So like, I mean, thiswas always like a kind of more
down the road saying and guys,I just it's not like they're frothing at
the mouth over this deal or anydeal for exactly being at this point,
I think it's pretty widely known. And you know, so that's put the
Lakers is of this on the newYouTube show that Brad Turner and I are

(08:56):
doing. So that's good pluck todaythat yeah, that you know that more
interesting crews, to be honest, sort of like everybody you know. I
think if you look at like theguy, that you can more easily see
how this player would impact your chancesof the championship. You take the guy
you know who's one of the bestperimeter defenders in the league, you'd add

(09:18):
him to your mix at you know, nine ten million dollars a year instead
of a guy who you know issupremely talented but would be you know,
undergoing a pretty severe role change atforty million. And I Rodnie, I
think you could probably speak to thisa little bit. Although it's it's kind
of different in football. I thinkone of the hardest things that I've seen

(09:39):
in sports is you watch all startalent like kind of move into like a
lower place on a hierarchy and likehave to figure out how to like affect
winning and help it helping a teamwhen they're like not the guy anymore.
I think it's like it's so challenging, and people, I think a lot

(10:01):
of times look at these guys andsay, oh, he's selfish, he's
not making the right sacrifices not tolike it's almost like speaking an entirely different
language, like being a role playerversus being a stuff. Is it that
it is? It's it's a verydifficult thing for a lot of guys,
like you said, being being theguy that that was counted on to make

(10:22):
things happen for the team to go, it had to go through him.
Uh to being a quote role playeron a on a different game changes rhythm.
Yeah, absolutely, it changes yourrhythms. It changes your I mean
like I was talking to a playerthe other day about this, you know,
a young player then, but hewas like struggling to try to find
his footing, and it's just likeyou know, I mean, he's been

(10:43):
the best player, the most talentplayer, and every team he's ever been
on ever like with the exceptional likesome like you know, traveling AU also
stuff in the summer, but likeby and large, top tier recruit,
you know, amazing heights player, top top notch college player, and it's
like you get in the league andthen it's like, oh, well,

(11:05):
like all the stuff that I usedto be doing it doesn't quite work as
well now or I'm not giving thesame opportunities to do it now, and
so now I've got to like pickmy spot. So I think, like
when it comes to titnessan big picturewhen it comes to Lakers and it comes
to like the trades that they'll lookat or eventually look at, that that
is a challenge. And I thinkthat there are still some scars, you
know, from the inability to figureout the right role from Russell Russell Westbrook

(11:26):
when I came to adding a thirdstar. So you know, you're taking
on a pretty big risk with ZachLavine, not to mention I mean,
certainly financially, but not even tomention too like the knee issues that he's
had. You know, I wouldnot be surprised to see if their sites
were set on someone a little moreaccustomed to playing around great players than a
guy that would sort of have tolearn how to do it who could do

(11:48):
it and it might be great atit, but would certainly be learning how
to do it. Hey, Dan, before we let you go, final
question quickly, Clippers in San Antoniotonight you'll hear the game here on the
radio station, I think at five. But you know, are they starting
to now figure it out with JamesHarden for sure? I mean, and
I think one of the biggest thingsguys is like James Garden game likes underneath

(12:09):
him. It's impossible to replicate whenyou're working out on your own, the
stress and and what it takes cardiowise, would it takes strength wives to
play an NBA game, particularly toplay an NBA game with the ball in
your hands? As much as JamesHarden has it. I think there's obviously
still giant steps that need to betaken for them in terms of how to

(12:30):
play with one another. But butI think it's it's starting to settle a
little bit. And you know thisis where the like their talent should carry
them well they figure out their identity. But for them to be the kind
of team that they want, thekind of team that Steve Bomber is paying
for, They're gonna have to eventuallyfigure out an identity. But but right

(12:54):
now, at least, you know, you'll settle for talent, and they've
got tons of it. And realquick, Dan, real quick, are
you the Are you the big popat home cooking Thanksgiving? Are you the
man who puts it on the grillto I will tell you I I do
some sides I do. I willnot be doing the ticket this for my
mother in laws. I am actuallythough, guys. As soon as I
hang up the phone, I willbe baking two apple pies. Okay,

(13:15):
lovely, Okay, okay, you'rea baker. I mean that's like just
basically following instructions and measuring like it'sit's my level of baking is really could
be done by a monkey. Likeit's just like if you knew what a
cup was and you do where theflower was, Like it looks by the
way, when I've done, itlooks like it was done by some sort
of zoo anable because there is sugarand flour everywhere. I'm a real mess

(13:41):
guy it I love it all right? Well, Dan, Happy Thanksgiving to
you and the family. Give toyou guys, Save to you guys,

amazing holiday and all the blessings.Talk about a basketball blessing. How cool
is it to be balling on theislands Honolulu Maui Invitational, UCLA Gonzaga tonight.

(16:26):
But first they took care of businesswith Shamanad the Silver Swords Ronnie hit
Me hit him. Oh yeah, thank you, Uncle Don don Ho of
course, the legendary Hawaiian entertainer layingit down. But the Bruins, you

(16:52):
know, they took care of business. They'd be shamming on by twenty eight.
I mean, Kansas beat him bytwenty seven, if you want to
put into that kind of perspective. They got off to a twenty eight four
start. Silver Swords came back butthen the pooh poo platters took over again

(17:17):
with the pooh pooh. Vic,well, I'm just getting into the spirit
of the islands. But the bruinturnovers in the first half they were as
thick as the whole new The greenturtles sunning themselves on the north shore of
Oahu the Nayakia Beach at sunset. They had fourteen turnovers at the half.

(17:41):
Have you guys ever seen the greenturtles sunning themselves in Hawaii? I'm not,
Vic, No, what a beautifulsight, the green turtles the Hanu
I'm i'm I am a devotee ofthe of the green turtles. You know,
I don't know if you guys knewthat. Well, it doesn't surprise

(18:02):
me. Vic. Sebastian Mack rememberthat name. He is your stud for
UCLA this year. Sensational slasher. He's a sensational slasher to the wop sixteen
points led the Brewers. He atfive steals. No, he let up
Marquette, but good he did, just couldn't finish it off. But look

(18:22):
great. So number eleven Gonzaga tonightfrom Honolulu, the fifth place game.
But this is a tremendous game. It's a bit of robbery with the Zags.
Tip at nine from Honolulu, listenedto it right here after the Clipper
game. Nice Am five to seventhe LA Sports. What a double header

(18:45):
tonight right here on the station. We're playing all the games for you right
if the Clipper San Antonio. Ofcourse, whenever UCLA plays Gonzaga. The
videos floating around social media of UCLA'sbig comeback I think it was in two
thousand and five with the Adam Morrisonturning the ball over, UCLA having that
great comeback in the final like thirtyseconds and Morrison's crying on the court during

(19:07):
the NCAA tournament. Yeah, yeah, do you remember it well? Last
we forgetting more recent years, theJalen Suggs bank shot from half court all
hard to knock him out of thenational title game. Awful, that one
hurt. So you're right, Vic, some epic games between these two schools,

(19:29):
tremendous runs, nice and bit ofrivalry. West Coast Hope supremacy.
And again, why isn't UCLA inthe top ten in America. I'm with
Mick Cronin, Man, it's disrespectto UCLA not to put a number one
in the top twenty five of theearly rankings, you know, just coming

(19:52):
out. I know it's early inthe season, but this is UCLA man,
you mix put together with a sensatialgroup kids. Man, you saw
how they played with number four Marquettes. They usually could have beaten the number
four Golden Eagles. And Mick Angryand Honolulu he still talks. Doesn't matter,

(20:18):
It doesn't matter, all right,Vic has more to talk about what's
going on in Honolulu? Maybe asumo update and the haikup when we come
back. Yeah, let's keep itgoing with that spirituality. Well we got
cut off a little bit last time, but let's I don't know how that
happened. How did that happen?I don't know a TP keep doing your
thing. Come on, Vic,fellas, look at me. I'm covelling

(20:38):
for this beautiful looming Thanksgiving holiday again. Yes, happy, joyous, blissful
Thanksgiving to all all our listeners. Are beloved listeners, Thank you so much.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you guys, all your families and everyone's family.

(20:59):
This isn't indeed a sensational, sensationaltime, and we give thanks for all
of our blessings. And are youlike me? No? Are you like
me. I'm getting vibrations of Yamamoto. Oh you feel Yamamoto? Huh coming

(21:21):
huh, I'm feeling some Yamamoto.I'm just you know, going over all
the moves of Andreel Friedman, thepresidency of baseball ops for your Los Angeles
Dodgers. You know from last year, Remember Dodgers didn't invest heavily in the
free agent market. Why right, sort of bank rolling getting in preparation for

(21:42):
now In the moment with Otanisn andYamamoto, Dodgers knew Yamamoto was also going
to be up. Would that beunbelievable if the Dodgers pulled off that double,
the daily double of Yamamoto attorney,So yeah, come on, I'm

(22:03):
getting those vibes, Vick. Idon't know if you'd be able to contain
yourself if the Dodgers were to signtwo Japanese players in the same all season,
the Amoo and Altani then reacquire Kentomayto. Yeah, Vic's gonna find a
way to get to that press conferencefor sure, his head would explode,
guaranteeing it. I believe that Dodgerswere positioning and correct me if I'm wrong,

(22:29):
all Right, but remember last seasonDodgers didn't go gung ho, go
Gaga in the free agent market, and I believe the underlying reason was Otani
signia Ammoto. All right, well, now we're there, and now we're
in that time where you can schmooze, you know, the team Yamamoto and

(22:52):
Timotani. So I'm looking forward tothis negotiation process. And now again I
will not release any information because youdon't know any well. Also, the
Tawny camp does not want any informationfiltered through. Have you talked to the
camp? I have not, Well, exactly. Hmmm, Sumo Day ten

(23:25):
from fuka Oka. Everybody bick Arethese fifteen day tournaments? Yes, okay,
fifteen day tournaments. My beloved bride, Yukosakamoio and I are witnesses to
every match. We love it.So it's a tremendous time. Six tournaments
a year, fifteen day tournaments. This is in the Southern Japan. This

(23:49):
is the only tournament in Southern Japanin fuka Oka. You got three in
Tokyo, one in you got onein Osaka and one in I believe Nagasaki,
and one in Fukuoka. Six sixthtotal Ichiamamoto is eight and two.

(24:11):
Everybody Ichi. He lost to aHere with Daomi yesterday. Here with Diomi
is one seven in a row onlyReuden Barry's distant cousin from Barry's tickets dot
Com. It's by rude giving Barryis having a good tournament. Frontal crush

(24:33):
out of Tomawashi. He's seven andthree. Is ruding. That'll get you
a Tommi Fuji, the twenty oneyear old, the young blood sumo rock
star. He'd be shutting to Oomi. He's now eight and two. Is
a Tommy Fuji. But the matchof the day, I'm calling this the
Yukosakamoto match of the day. Herewe go between Taka Yasu the Bear,

(24:56):
Dori Fuji, the little guy who'sunbelievable. Midori Fuji wins an exciting match,
so he goes to seven and threeMidori Fuji, so he's still in
it. Flying Monkey Tobizara one,he's four and six. We love when
toby Zara's in the ring. Whenthree's on the dojo, people just love

(25:18):
his athletic moves ura rocking that pinkmawahee. He won by rear push out.
That's a big move. Remember, once you get behind Assumo wrestler.
You're in position to win, youjust push him out. I've never been
victimized by the rear push push out. Really okay, not exactly my cup

(25:41):
of tea. Oh so you gotfour Rici four wrestlers at eight and two
sharing the lead after ten days.Colton Miwaka, he is the pillowy one.
Yes, Colton Miwaka's eight and two, pillowy one. He had a

(26:02):
beautiful over arm throw yesterday beating Gonyama. I'll show you. You know,
the the fiery Mongolian. He's sevenand three. Yeah, but four guys

(26:22):
are tired at eight and two Kirishimaright right to four guys at the top.
Five days left from fuku Oka,and you know where that lead is
too vic to the source, Yes, to the energy. Yes, as

(26:45):
we continue to celebrate with joy NativeAmerican Heritage Month. Yes, and I'm
going to go with to come sir, who to come, sir? Come

(27:06):
see you m s e hd Comsawho's to Comsa Shornee, chief warrior of
fabulous Orator to come to to cometo galvanized tree tribes around North America.
Iconic folk hero in American, Indigenousand Canadian history. It comes to okay,
