Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we continue on on the countdown to Thanksgiving. Fred
Rogan Rodney Pete on AM five seventy LA Sports. In
a bit, Kevin will join the program. Get us caught
up to date on everything that has happened today with
its lit. But now let's bring on our good friend
Bennye Bond Senior. Benny Good afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Do you good afternoon, gentlemen? How are we doing?

Speaker 1 (00:23):
We're doing well? Can we start with this? Kevin told
us the story and we ran some what and we
ran some audio from Amy Trask. Oh boy, okay, okay,
so you know what we're going to talk about.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Oh yeah, all right.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
The Jim Gray influence in the Raiders. What can you
tell us?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, I mean Jim Gray is tight with Tom Brady.
Tom Brady is one of the owners obviously are the Raiders.
Mark and Tom and Jim are are are close. So
so yeah, I mean he's in on conversations and you know,
he's he's he's he talks to Mark Davis. But I

(01:02):
would not say that he's influencing any any big decisions
or anything like that. I mean, I'm sure he shares
his opinions on things and his thoughts on things. But
in terms of actually having you know, a thumb on
the scale to sway one thing or another, I would
say that that is not accurate.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah, that's kind of what I said, Vinnie. I thought that,
you know, Jim's been around for a long long time.
He was very close with Al as well and close
with Mark and has just been around the Raiders and
that organization has got you know, he's got an end.
And then then of course his his relationship with Tom
Brady and they've been friends, and I talked about the

(01:43):
traveling art circuits that they have going on that they
had on during the Super Bowl at the Fountain Blue
but there right away. Yeah, very very cool. But they
are very very close friends. And but Amy so Amy,
you know, obviously talked about that turmoil on the field
is also relatable to what's going on off the field,

(02:04):
and there's you know, there's backroom conversations and things like
that that they got to get an alignment in order
for this organization to get it turned around. You agree
with that that the there's some there's some glarion or
there's some off the field issues going on with the
Raiders that are not allowing them to be as effective

(02:25):
as they should be.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
At this point.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
I'll put it this way. I think I think there
are some there's been some decisions that have been made
that I think the Raiders are going to learn from.
And when I say the Raiders, I mean the current
kind of construction of the power structure of the Raiders,
and Tom Brady figures in that prominently, There's no question
about that. And you know, I think that you could

(02:48):
look at the latest move of removing chip Kelly as
the offensive coordinator as probably the biggest learning experience of all.
This was much more more of a front office i e.
Tom brady decision to hire chip Kelly more than it
was the head coach's decision. And I think everyone thought

(03:09):
it could work. You know, you've got two professionals, two
veteran coaches. You know you've got a defensive minded head
coach and an offensive minded offensive coordinator. Obviously, and Pete
was more than deferential in terms of giving, as he
said the leeway had to tip Kelly to run the
offense kind of as he saw fit, and a lot
of the all of the decisions, basically most of the

(03:31):
big ones were made by chip Kelly on a lot
of different levels. And as the season went on and
the success, you know, wasn't what wasn't happening, the more
Pete wanted to do things kind of his way, his
offensive vision, a lot more run game, a lot more
protection for the quarterback on dropbacks, in a different way

(03:51):
of protecting the quarterback, and there was resistance to that,
and it kind of all came to a head. And
I think the lesson learned, in a long winded way
of saying this, the lesson learned is you gotta let
your head coach picked the offensive coordinator in the and
and and the coaching staff. And I think that you know,
that's that's definitely a lesson moving forward, in one of
probably a few or many that that this Raiders front

(04:12):
office is learning this year. And so we'll see what
kind of changes are coming. I wouldn't rule out a
change head coach. You know, uh, if if you get
to the end of the season and there's no been
and there hasn't been any progress, and this latest move
in terms of firing Chip Kelly doesn't have, you know,

(04:33):
the desired effect. I'm not saying that the Raiders is
going to reel off a bunch of wins. You go
look at their schedule. I don't even know where next
win is going to come from. But they have to
show some kind of progress and some kind of give
some sort of evidence you know that Pets the right
man for the job and this is headed in the
right direction. And last thing I'll say to that is,
I think Pete has to ask himself a big question

(04:53):
as well. And I've tried to, you know, when I
when I've talked to him about this and asked him
about this, I've tried to, you know, get a get
a some clarity on this. This is a job you guys,
that it's going to take a while to do it right,
and it's gonna take multiple off seasons, multiple drafts, and
multiple off seasons and drafts where you're hitting on your
major decisions and your big decisions, not the least of

(05:16):
which is who's going to be your real future at quarterback?
And if you're Pete at this age, do you really
want to be part of something that's probably going to
take a few years just to get it right and
that probably means stripping it down and just going into
a full, full remold rebuild. I don't think that that
he necessarily wants to do that. He definitely isn't coaching

(05:36):
like he wants to do that, But he's gonna have
to ask himself that because quite honestly, that's the only
way that this is going to get done correctly is
with somebody that's truly committed to what the hard work
that needs to be done. And there's no band aids,
there's no quick fixes. They've tried all that over the years.
There's no one player away, not right now, that's for

(05:57):
darn shure. There are multiple multiple players away. Does Pete
want to be part of that? And it'll be interesting
to see how he ultimately answers that at the end
of the year.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah, yeah, that is the big question. Is he at
his age? We all know the energy level and I
talked about that before. You know, energy levels him being
a forty five year old coach, not a seventy five
or whatever year old coach. But but you're right about that,
Vinni is the rebuild can Pete last at and does

(06:27):
he want to last at? And on top of that, Vinny,
how much does the and people don't talk about this
the actual move, the overall move from Oakland to Las Vegas,
just the transition of everything. The business side seems like
it's from the outside looking in, it's to be working.

(06:48):
You know, he still got the great fan base and
people coming from from California, Northern California, southern California to
get to Vegas. It's a destination for greater game. All
those things seem to be working on the business side,
But does it translate down to the field as well,
that it's going to take some time to make a
big move like that for this team and this organization
to start working as a well oiled machine.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, and that's the that's the that's you just nailed
it right on the head. And I would I would
also offer up that in terms of the business side
and in terms of you know, all that part of it.
It's not just going good, it's going fantastic. I mean,
that's probably the biggest frustration of all is that the
Raiders are so in such a great place. And I'm

(07:32):
talking about for the for the foreseeable future. They they're
they're making money hand over fist. They've got all of
their finances in order, they've got a great facility, they've
got a great stadium. They're in a great place that
people that you know that players want to play and
coaches want to coach. It's it's I don't care if
they're winning or losing. As long as the other team
is halfway decent, they're gonna they're gonna draw fans. That's

(07:54):
that place is going to be sold out and filled
to the brim. It's it's just so good on that
end of it. And and we go back six seven
years ago, that wasn't the case. They were one of
the worst in that situation. Now they're literally one of
the best. And that's not hyperbly hyperbole or exaggeration. They
literally are one of the top five, you know, financial
teams in the NFL. And and that's a great thing.

(08:16):
Now it's got to translate to the success on the field,
which obviously has been lagging. And there's they've tried a
bunch of different things. And I think, you know, bringing
in Tom Brady and the group of investors that that
he brought in with him and a couple of other
gentlemen that came in as investors helps with that. And
I think it helps with leadership. And I do think

(08:38):
that the decision to bring those guys in along with
Tom Brady will ultimately have the positive effect that you
wanted to have on the field. It's just going to
take some time. And Rodney, you know this. You've been
part of, you know, multiple organizations and you see the
ones that are successful and the ones that aren't, and
you also see how long sometimes something can take, especially

(08:59):
if you do it right and are willing to do
what you have to do to make it right. It's it's,
it's it's it could take a little bit of time,
and it's going to be you know, a lot of
labor and everyone has to be on the same page.
And that's I think the part of the football side
of it, that that that all has to get aligned
and you have to have the right coach, with the
right general manager and the right leader of the football department.

(09:20):
We kind of saw that with Jeff Fisher and the Rams.
Remember how that kind of all stagnated and they just
it wasn't it wasn't working. The same personnel people are there,
you know, less need Kevin Demoff and that whole whole group,
and they finally got themselves truly aligned with a with
a head coach that that fit what they wanted to
be about and shared their vision and look at what

(09:42):
has happened with the Rams. Eventually, that's where the Raiders
are going to have to have to get to. I
don't know that it's with Pete Carroll. And even if
it is right now with Pete Carroll, how much longer
is that going to last? I mean, you just I
know that you've got the energy of a forty five
year old person that he does, but the age of
the age, and there's no getting around that. In three
years he's going to be seventy seven years old and

(10:04):
that's the end of his contract. And I mean that
says it all right there.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
I don't know, Benny. I just don't think you blow
the guy out after one year. I don't know. And
you're probably right, okay, I'm giving you that, like this
isn't working. So we got to get to a point
where we got to get But it's like geez, just
another swing and a miss and that's the problem. Another

(10:30):
swing in a miss.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
And you care, no question about it, There's no question
about it. But I also and this is kind of
a kind of you know where I think a lot
of people where the heads are right now, is that
does Pete even want to do that? I mean, you know,
they're gonna have to have this. They're gonna have to
sit down and have a really frank and honest conversation
about right, this is where we are. If we didn't

(10:53):
think that before coming into the season, it's pretty darn
obvious now that you know. I mean they got they
got handled. And when I say handled, I mean handled
by a very bad Cleveland Browns team that wasn't even
a game basically, And that's not a good Cleveland Browns team.
No grunted. They have a really good defense, but they
were two and eight too coming into that game, and

(11:13):
it wasn't even a game. It was Cleveland, you know,
controlled it from start to finish. If that's not the
wake up call beyond the Dallas Cowboys doing what they
did to him, but on what the Kandasy Chiefs did
to them. I mean, they're losing to bad teams, good teams.
They're getting blown out of the watery by good teams.
It's it's that's what the reality is, slapping them upside

(11:35):
the face. And then think Pete's kind of, you know,
resigning himself to that reality. And so that's the question
that he's going to have to add. There's nobody I
don't think anybody is doubting that he's capable of overseeing
a rebuild. I mean, he didn't forget how to coach.
He knows you know how to do it, it's do
you really want to? Because I don't think that he
walked into the situation thinking that it was going to

(11:59):
be that die and it was going to be that
painstaking and time consuming, just and and and again. I
reiterate this, that's where every court to to to get
to the other side of the mountain. You got to
make all the right decisions. And that's no guarantee. So
you might be making you know, okay decisions and in
three years, you're you're kind of right where you right
where you are right now. So there's there's not even

(12:20):
any guarantees that that it does work in three years.
And I think that's the question that everyone's going to
have to sit down and talk about it, honestly, and
they may not blow them out of the water, but
I wouldn't be surprised if they kind of all kind
of came to an understanding and that and that Pete
was was was right there in that understanding.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Yeah, Vinnie does uh does Gino ride out the season
or do they because I don't even know if that
that makes a difference. If they change change right now,
just much like Chip Kelly leaving, it doesn't make a
difference with this team. I hate, Yeah, I hate middle
of the season firings, whether it be coaches or anything

(13:00):
like that, especially for a team that's not going anywhere.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Yeah, I agree, I mean, I think it might look
a little bit different on how they're going to go
about offensively, but I don't see that the that the
that the you know, outcomes are going to change or
that much is going to change. They got a lot
of work to do on that offensive side of the
football in terms of talent and that even defense, but
we're talking about offense right now. I agree with you, you know,

(13:24):
uh so, I I don't know, you know what kind
of effect that's going to have or you know, how
it's how it's going to look necessarily, But again, it's
just it's it's and I know Pete's kind of figuring
this out right now, and don't forget his son as
the office flying coach too, so you know you got that,

(13:45):
but but it's just it's kind of a mess right now,
and it's it's as bad as it's been since the
Raiders have gotten here, since I've been I've been covering
this team, and I think a lot of it has
to do with going to to our original you know,
uh question of of is this thing aligned correctly and
who's making the decisions and how does that power structure
kind of all play out? And I'll add this as well.

(14:08):
You know, nobody's trying to take Tom Brady's job away
with Fox. It's there's a lot of money that he's making.
It's what over three hundred million dollars that he stands
to make by fulfilling that contract. But if you're going
to be the head of football operations, if you're going
to be the guy that's making the decisions, and by
all accounts, he's you know, front and center with all that,

(14:31):
this is not a job that you could do remotely
or part time. You have to be there every single
day because you always have to ask yourself this, the
information is getting to Tom Brady, how many washers and
driers does it go to before it gets to Tom Brady?
Whose version of what's going on on the day to
day basis is he listening to or carries them you know,
the biggest way. It's why you have to be in
the building to see it for yourself, to talk to people,

(14:53):
to have a connection with everybody in the building. That's
just the way it has to be. And so I
think he's going I have to ask himself a question
as well in terms of, you know, if I want to,
if I'm putting in my face and my name behind this,
should I be more present in Henderson, Nevada, at the
facility on a day to day basis to make sure

(15:13):
that that this thing, you know, turns out right.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
All right, Beny, great stuff, and you and the family
have a great Thanksgiving.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Likewise, you guys, enjoy it, enjoy the weekend, be safe,

everything that has happened today with its lit and that
will be next.

Speaker 4 (15:40):

Speaker 3 (15:53):
Ah yeah, I feel you, Ronnie right there, right there.
Keep it right there, Ronnie. Yeah, Roddery, Pete, Fred Rogan
on a Tuesday, Please please enjoy the week and be
careful because it's Thanksgiving. We should all give thanks no
matter what your situation is. It's be thankful you're live,

(16:15):
walking around and think about others at a time like
this during a holiday week where things have been difficult
for a lot of folks over the last few months. Fred,
So just be thankful, be thankful for what you can lift.

Speaker 5 (16:33):
Stories lighting up their sports headliners.

Speaker 6 (16:36):
Yeah, so we were talking a few minutes ago about
UCLA and the entire so far versus Rose Bowl situation.
So there's something interesting happening. We know the college landscape
is changing. All of these universities are trying to find
ways to make money.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
For their athletic department.

Speaker 6 (16:49):
However, they can so big rivalry game in Atlanta this
weekend between Georgia and Georgia Tech. Tech would usually host
this game at their home stadium. They actually got a
ten million dollars pay day from hers He's Been Stadium
where the Atlanta Falcons play, to have them host the
game between the two schools. And that's ten million dollars
coming in for the athletic department for Georgia Tech, and
they even admitted we did this last year to try

(17:12):
to help our athletic department, and we think it actually
paid dividends and helped us with our nil situation to
improve our roster to be competitive this year. So I
say that knowing that this weekend is also rivalry week
across college football USC and UCLA. So Rodney, I'll start
with you if I don't know if Sofi Stadium use
them as an example approach USC and says we'll give
you ten fifteen to twenty million dollars to take that

(17:34):
home game against UCLA away from you so we can
host it at SOFAR if your USC is that's something
that you'd be willing to do.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
And are we getting the home field treatment, meaning you know, it's.

Speaker 6 (17:47):
Not being treated like a neutral site game. Yeah, both
end zones will be painted SC, cardinal and gold.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
That situation right, Yeah?

Speaker 2 (17:54):
How is that?

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Yeah, let's say not is it going to be a
neutral site game where one UCLA ones SC. They split,
They split the revenue that the schools get as opposed
to what USC would get the Lion's share if they
played it at the coliseum. So we're gonna split it
down the middle, so we're talking about.

Speaker 6 (18:12):
The revenue would not be split. So this is basically
this is still a Georgia Tech home game. They're just
not playing it at their own stadium. It's being hosted
at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Now there might be extra signage
and sponsorships that you usually would have at your own
home stadium that you would not get at this neutral site.
But again, you're getting a giant payday to move it
from one venue to another.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
Yeah, I think if you're if you are UCLA and
you're you're one of these schools that is the athletic
department is struggling a little bit. You got an opportunity
for a major NFL, big time venue to pay and
flip that bill. Why not why not go for it?
If this was a UCLA home game, I would do it. Yeah,

(18:52):
But the question, but the question do it?

Speaker 1 (18:54):
Okay?

Speaker 5 (18:54):
That was the cast say it works both ways.

Speaker 6 (18:56):
But I asked you since you're a US you said
you went to the USC, So no, you would not take
that awy from a colde.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
I would do it.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
No, I would not.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
Okay, I take the money. I don't need the money. No,
I would take the money. It doesn't matter. I would
take the money. It makes sense and it's different and
it's fun, and I would take the money. Well, wait
a minute, here's the question. See, I have to rethink
this for one second. If I take the money, if

(19:25):
you bought tickets, Oh but you'd know if you know time,
if you bought USC season tickets, would those translate to
so fine?

Speaker 3 (19:33):
They would have to, I would imagine.

Speaker 6 (19:34):
So okay, So this decision came about last year, So
before even last season kicked off, Georgia Tech announced that
they were doing this this season, So it was well
in advance that they found this out. So I am
assuming that they find some way to get around getting
the tickets transferred over from your home stadium to that.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Yeah, or you know those guys. You know what happens
too in a game like this where both the Rose
Bowl and the and the Coliseum, even though the College
sim's been you know, redone and Rose Bowl has too.
But you've got opportunity to build on those suites. So
how did those suites work? Are you gonna they sharing?

(20:10):
So FI sharing their revenue with the suites because there's
triple the suites that so far than there is at
the Rose Bowl or or even at the Coliseum.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
You know, I just have to read this real what
Ben Bolt's just sweitet at this? Okay, on this topic,
there's so many transfers at UCLA that entimt coach Tim
Skipper had to show his team a five minute video
that he had the staff put together to explain the
rivalry with USC. There are so many transfers at UCLA
they didn't even know what this meant.

Speaker 6 (20:40):
Isn't that probably the state of college sports in general
though these days? And Kirby probably have to explain that
to his kids about Georgia Tech or Alabama, about you know, Auburn,
to some of these kids that cut transfer in and
out left and right so much.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
Maybe it's a problem, but not like that, And I
think it's good. I think it's that that's probably blown
a little bit out of proportion here. I am defending UCLA.
I don't think it went to that effect. But when
things start to get out like that, it starts to
have legs that, oh, look at UCLA, it's like piling
on They don't you know, they're so bad, they don't

(21:15):
even know what this rivalry is, So we got to
show a video of Reggie Bush and Matt Lioner going
against it and playing UCLA, or Kate McNown and Skip
Hicks playing against USC. I mean, we got to show
those videos to remind these kids have no idea. It's
gone a little far, but I understand, and it's different

(21:36):
in the South. I don't think most kids going to
Georgia or being at Clemson or being at Alabama have
to worry or think about, oh, what is this ribbery
against Auburn? Mean, what does that mean? I don't know.
Different different out West, for sure, but I think it's

(21:57):
a little overblown about the having to tell kids what
this game is.

Speaker 6 (22:03):
Lakers played the Clippers tonight at Crypto, so that's a
Laker home game. Obviously, with the Clippers now being at
into it, two teams seemingly going in different directions. Clippers
are five and twelve have not played well this year.
Kawhi has been injured, although he's back now. Lakers are
currently twelve and four. They will not have DeAndre Eton
in the lineup tonight. He has suffered a bruised right
knee a couple of nights ago in their victory and
he will not suit up tonight for the Lakers, so

(22:24):
we'll see what impact that has. But Clippers five and twelve,
Lakers twelve and four. First matchup with the season at
Crypto tonight, Fred.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
Well, I mean the Clippers are banged up, they're old.
The Lakers are playing well. I think James Harden had
fifty five against Charlotte the other day.

Speaker 6 (22:40):
It did, Yeah, and he looked like at the next
night against Cleveland when he had no gas left in
the tank.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
Right, No, No, he's done for two weeks now, that's it.
I mean he is. He's gone out there and just
fired all of his bullets.

Speaker 6 (22:51):
I mean, he's playing his ass off. There's only so
much he can do, and he's up there in age.
I mean, you can't blame James Harden for anything. He's
been their best player by far.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
Right, So what am I thinking? Think the Lakers win
and pretty handily.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Rodney, Yeah, yeah, it is. It's not even every other
game with the Clippers, it's every fourth game that they
play somewhat Well, it's just a disaster.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
You know.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
We just talked about this with Bennie and the Raiders
and retooling and just tearing the whole thing down. It's
it's come that time. It's come that time. Not even
my wildest dreams, not even our our insider the Salty
A saw this coming with the Clippers. No, you know.
And it's so bad and it feels like it's only

(23:37):
gonna get worse.

Speaker 6 (23:39):
All right, and that's what's lighting up the headlines.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
All right, we will come back and wrap this one up.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
Tell you what the home stretch right to the finish line? Yeah,
we already there, very short stretch, word to the finish line.
I got to tell you what I think the Lakers
have an easy time with the Clippers tonight. Though I
don't think of easy work. Easy work, don't you think?

Speaker 3 (24:36):
Yeah, yeah, I think just yeah, all of that, and
the Lakers just are playing consistently on a whole different,
different level where it's it's a hit or miss for
the Clippers just to the same pace, and this game
could be over the way the Clipper's been playing could
be over at halftime. And then they throw in.

Speaker 1 (24:56):
The tout also quick shout out things. Beat Outawa last night.
What do you go like that? And here's we hate Ottawa.
Now we don't hate Ottawa. We hate Edmonton. We don't.
Ottawa's fine. But the other thing, the other thing, the Ducks.
We never talk about the Ducks. The Ducks are having

(25:17):
a hell of a start. Oh my god, they're like
a whole new team. Yeah, okay, you know we need
to do Kevin. We need to book their coach, Joel Quinnville.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
I mean, it's not like everybody's knocking their door down,
so I'm sure we can get them on.

Speaker 6 (25:31):
It was a little bit of a controversial higher, but
so far it's working out.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
I want to talk about that mustache he's got. Yeah,
he get that epic mustache, So let's talk about that.
Let's try to book him next week. Okay, right, all right,
Ronnie thank you. Great job, Kevin, appreciate it. Rodney back
tomorrow to wrap it up before Thanksgiving.
