(00:00):
Thought we continue on Fred Rogan RodneyPete on a five seventy LA Sports.
We've been waiting all day for thisman to join the show. Former NFL
quarterback and incredible story. And Rodney, I might add, I believe our
kids played on the same pony leagueor whatever it was baseball team together many
(00:20):
many years ago. It is greatto welcome Eric Kramer to the show.
And Eric, thank you for comingon today. I plug your kids.
How are we doing today? We'redoing good, man, We're doing good.
Hey, listen, I want toI definitely want to get into your
book, man, The Ultimate Comeback. It's a great story, it's a
(00:41):
great read, and I appreciate youbeing so honest and upfront and truthful in
the book. But I do wantto start by talking about our Lions man.
Real quick, let's talk about ourAllians, because you and I both
you and I both were back atthe game this past weekend and that place
was rock in. And for thosethat that don't remember or don't know because
(01:06):
we're in California, but Eric andI were teammates in Detroit for four years,
three years, four years, fouryears in Detroit, so I didn't
know Eric was that old Rodney.Well, I didn't know Eric was that
old him. Yeah, somehow Iactually skipped a few years. I'm older
than Rodney. The world is goingon right now, ready. But the
(01:30):
last time the Lions actually won aplayoff game and won a home playoff game
was nineteen ninety one, in whichwe were both on the team. That
year beat Dallas in that playoff game. That stadium was as loud as I
heard the stadium before. But butthis past weekend was extremely loud and might
have been on par with that. But that ninety one season, I got
(01:56):
hurt about the week eight or nineof the season. Eric stepped in and
took us the rest of the wayman in that season, and we killed
Dallas in that round, that openingdivisional round game and at the Silver Dome,
and then went on to eventually losingto Washington and they went on to
when the whin the Super Bowl thatyear. But that was an incredible,
(02:16):
incredible year in ninety one. Whatdo you make of the Lions now,
e k of their run and howthey're performing, Dan Campbell and more importantly
the comeback of Derek Golf, Well, that's just it. So let me
go back to where you've be whereyou start off talking about that year in
ninety one, So I would neverhave seen the field had you not gotten
(02:39):
hurt. So I don't want tosay things for getting hurt, but it
was just that kind of year wherewe as you know, later in the
year, Mike Outley went down anda bunch of us went to go see
him at the hospital because during thegame when he was hurt, I didn't
know what happened. And so Gudleywas a offensive guard for a starting guard
(03:04):
for US, and he and anda game against the Rams. Ironically he
felt awkwardly and was paralyzed. Yeah, and it this day, Yeah,
so very emotion No, I'm justgonna say though, that was in a
very as you just put it,emotional season. And uh, but to
(03:25):
fast forward to this year's Lions, you're right, it was an electric Uh
you got there that day. Iwas actually there a couple of days beforehand,
and the city itself like, forgetwhat's going on inside the Ford Field.
The city I cannot believe hasn't setfire to that place just yet,
because everybody feels like, you know, this is the generations have gone by
(03:51):
before since the Lions have been significant, and not only are they significant,
they're damn good. And it's justso fun to watch. I know it
is for me and you, butothers too. I mean, it's just
it's such a great, welcome andlong overdue situation that the current line organization
really has built from the ground up. Our guest is Eric Kramer, former
(04:15):
NFL quarterback. Rodney mentioned the tuddleof the book. We'll get into that,
but Eric, as a guy thatplayed in the NFL and achieved a
dream. After football, things changedfor you and you actually tried to take
your own life, can you tellthat story and explain how you got to
that place. Yeah, well,so, you know, I had battled
(04:42):
depression several times during life, evenwhile playing. Nothing that ever stook for
a duration of time, but atthe time it's felt long. But to
get to your point about back intwo thousand and eleven, my older son,
Griffin passed away to a heroin overdose, and he was a senior in
(05:06):
high school. Prior to that,he had been removed from school and we
put him in an impatient program calledVisions, and so that started around the
middle of his tenth grade year, and he was actually not in school they
reintroduced Griffin to school later once hegot an outpatient program, and then he
(05:31):
was doing well, really well infact, and then I noticed a shift
toward the end when he was,you know, two three months away from
it being over, and he lookedat that of the finish line, and
there is no finish line. Andso when you go from you know,
hey, thank you guys for gettingme here. Otherwise I would have been
(05:54):
dead or in jail to oh,you know that was just brainwashing. Well
it was brainwashing and it was true. And so you know, several months
after he got out, I wantto say it was done in over in
maybe oh, February March of twentyeleven. I received a phone call on
(06:15):
October thirty, at the morning ofit was a weekend, by the Sheriff's
apartment to come down to the station. And I said, well, what'
for? And they said, well, we'll explain that when you get here.
Well they don't. I know,I didn't win the lottery and that's
not where you go pick it up. And so I knew something bad had
happened. And sure enough they werewaiting for me there and the officer came
(06:43):
out and met me on top ofthe steps and let me know the griffin
did not make it through the night. And so that was just a bad
day overall, and so much sothat I've never had one like it or
since. And then I also rememberhaving to tell Dylan that day because Dylan
was thirteen, Griffin was eighteen. They're five years, five years apart,
(07:08):
and Dylan was an eighth creader inmiddle school and he was I remember,
he was over a friend's house, sleeping over, and I had to call
the dad, who I'm also friendswith, and explained, you know,
sort of briefly what happened and couldhe hang on to Dylan until I got
back home. And so that wasjust not only a bad day, just
(07:30):
a bad I don't want to saya period of time, like more than
a year. And I was,you know, working at the box,
then doing you know, games andstudio stuff, and all that came to
a hall and then there was Idon't know, six eight months after my
mom had already been she'd sort ofshe had a year in cancer. She
(07:53):
found out the day after her Mother'sDay that same year, and I had
some radical search and went into Iguess they call it permission. But then
it came back. And so aboutsix months after Griffin passed away, my
mom passed away, and h youknow, we honestly, uh you know
(08:13):
that was we were really close whenI was growing up, and it wasn't
until she got sick that or maybeeven slightly before then that uh, you
know, we're being hanging out andjust chatting about nothing and anyway, and
then around the time my mom passedaway, my dad got uh uh he
(08:33):
had some untreated acid reflex, whichis you know, anyone who has had
it, you know there's no mistakenwhen you have it, you can't I
can't keep anything down and it's forin his case, it hurt to swallow.
And so what happened was by havingit untreated, it became a softage
(08:54):
cancer, which for those of youwho don't know, uh, it's you
know, there's no getting out ofthat one. And it was about a
three year decline. And so towatch people go down like that, that
were really you know, there's haveto watch and and there's a I remember
(09:16):
somebody's saying with time, you knowwhen when up until your forties, it's
kind of your life is about addition. Once you kind of creep over that
hill, and I was about fiftyone or so at the time. It's
your life is more subtraction than addition, and that's exactly what's happening. And
so you know that led to mekind of going off the brink really depression
(09:41):
wise. And Eric, Eric, when you not to interrupt, but you
say, all of those things happenedat at you know, around the same
you know, general time, andyou say going off the brink, Like,
what kind of things did you turnto did you know that you were
sliding into a depression, or whatkind of things would you would you go
(10:01):
and use or or try to dealwith the depression you were dealing with?
What would you do? So Rodney, I was, uh, I've seen
a therapist on and off my eversince we were in Detroit, and and
so I had I was seeing oneat that time. I would say,
(10:26):
everything was kind of going along.Even this is after Griffin passed away and
and then he was about to retire, and I said, Okay, I
think I'm good. And and thenliterally months went by and I was just
fine. And then I was literallydriving down the road one day not far
from where I lived, and Ijust had this familiar feeling come over me
(10:50):
like, oh no, And I'dhad it before in the past, and
it's like when it comes, there'sthere's no like, you know, oh,
you know, excuse me, Iwant to you know, can I
put my foot in the door. It's like I'm here to stay. And
depression's mother man. And so youknow, at that time, I really
(11:15):
didn't know what to do. Iactually called up Eric Hipple and let him
know that I was having some suicidalthoughts. And Eric is the former Lions
quarterback as well played before Rodney andI and and so Eric said, okay,
(11:37):
get on a plane tomorrow. AndEric had had a hand and bringing
a depression center. I guess you'dcall it to the University of Michigan.
It wasn't on their campus, itwas out a few miles away. But
so I went out there for probablyI think he said thirty days, but
(11:58):
I don't really I remember going there. I remember the first few days,
but I don't really remember much afterthat. And I just know that I
was in a bad way, andI think I was probably too far down
the tracks. Honestly, Rodney, when I when I got there for it
to make a significant difference. Soas you battled this depression. You tried
(12:22):
to take your own life, Eric, I did, and I did well.
Fortunately it didn't work. What happened, Well, what happened was I
had persisted gun. I actually pursedthe gun before I left for Michigan.
And uh so I kind of hadone foot out the door while I was
(12:48):
there. And uh, I don'teven remember how I got home. Honestly,
I don't remember who picked me up. I mean, I do now
because a friend of mine told me. But when you I mean when you
got back from Michigan, yes, yes, And I don't remember getting on
the plane. I remember getting offthe plane. I remember who picked me
up. And I don't remember thefirst I don't know. Probably a few
(13:09):
weeks went by, and uh,and so but I began plotting my exit,
and you know, kind of wentto the internet to say, Okay,
how's the best way to do this? And I did it, and
so I what I knew I wantedto do. And again, nobody in
their right mind does this. Solet me preface that by saying I don't
(13:35):
feel what. I don't feel ashamedabout it. I don't feel guilty over
it, because I know that thisisn't something person in the right mind does.
But I just I knew I wantedto, you know, not only
end my life, but provide forthose after me that weren't going to be
(13:56):
going right. And you wrote,Eric, you write in your book,
I do't want to cut talk becausethere's an important point about who you are
you write in the book about andI was describing you as a guy that
does his homework. You're very meticulousabout studying, You're very meticulous about detail,
and you write in the book ofhow you plan this whole thing out,
(14:16):
like down to every last detail aboutwhat you were going to do to
try to take your own life right, right to the point where I knew
I wanted to do it. Ijust didn't want to do it at home
because even though Griffin, I'm sorry, even though Dylan wasn't living here,
he did have a key, Andthe last thing I wanted was for him
(14:39):
to be walking in on my bodybecause I you know, I saw Griffin's
body, and that's you don't forgetthat. And and so you know,
as if as if that would havereally mattered, or or financial things would
have mattered. No, you know, you lose perspective on all of that.
(15:01):
So my point is that yes,I did Fred and Rodney Planet execute
it, and fortunately was not successfulbecause while it would have been over for
me, for everybody, all thosepeople deal in in so many others,
it would have just been starting theirmeaning, their descent and their confusion and
(15:26):
their feelings of whatever. And fortunatelynobody had to deal with that. But
they did have to deal with,oh my god, what did we not
see? And there's so that's youknow, that's what everybody else goes through
too. So it's kind of ait wasn't just my recovery, it was
everybody else getting to you know, kind of look and touch and feel and
(15:52):
ask what was going on. Andso it's been a long journey back,
a great journey back, but onethat where I don't have a lot of
the early memories. But you know, that's okay too. And so Eric,
it's it's a failed attempt, andthe police are called, the people
(16:18):
are called, you're you're you know, taken to the hospital after that.
Was it a matter of I,you know, I'm going back to get
some more help or did you onceyou kind of were kind of getting your
head around what what had just happenedto what you were trying to do.
(16:38):
How did you turn it around? How did you get to a point where
I don't want to take my lifeanymore? Well, after that, there
was never a day where I eventhought about it again. In fact,
this is not meant to be funny, but uh, when during my recovery,
(17:02):
I started out at Northwridge Hospital,I think I was there for six
weeks. I then was transferred overto UCLA their Traumatic Port of Brain Area,
and then I started out at CNSand there wasn't one day where even
(17:23):
now, there's not one day wheredepression has entered or any sort of path
thoughts of surface. And so Idon't know what happened. What I do
know, though, is that Idon't feel that way anymore. And you
know, part of the title therein the book is living with a purpose,
(17:44):
And not only do I have one, I have many, And I
think just finding that and being kindof moving in those directions keep me focused
on what's ahead, not what wasbehind. And like I said, I
you know every day that when Igo to bed, I'm literally tired.
(18:07):
And when I sleep well now andwhen I get up, Mike, you
p hit the floor and I'm youknow, if someone's happier than me,
I haven't seen it, but Ihope they are. But I feel very
kind of just engaged in the recordand living with with that in mind.
(18:29):
Well, man, I got totell you. The book is called The
Ultimate Comeback, Surviving a Suicide Attempt, Conquering Depression, and Living with a
Purpose. And you know, I'veknown you over thirty years and when I
when I got that news, Iwas devastated. And you alluded to this
of you know, you kind ofwonder what did I miss, What was
(18:49):
I missing? Why didn't I know? Why didn't I understand? And all
those things run through your mind. And I was saying before you came on,
is that even if you think aboutsomeone that may be going through something,
reach out, give them a call, check on, check on people
in your life. But you writein this book, man, I uh,
it's it's really a credit to youto be able to talk so openly
(19:15):
about what happened to you, talkopenly about depression. And I just want
to say thanks for coming on andsharing your story with our audience, man,
because it definitely means a lot andhits home in an era where people
don't like the necessarily especially men don'tlike talk about their mental health doing it
(19:37):
front and center. And I justwant to say I appreciate you, man,
and thanks again for coming on brothermy pleasure. And as you might
expect, I've gotten word from peoplethat you and I both played with in
Detroit, in friends of mine incollege that I play with and that have
(20:00):
now let me know that they've sufferedfrom this, that or the other.
And I think, like you havealluded to, the idea is to get
them not only conversations started, butto live your life in such a way
knowing that you're always being observed bysomebody. So if that's the case,
(20:21):
then try to be the person thatgets observed, display that you're you know,
a good listener, empathetic, andsomebody who other people that are always
going through stuff we might not see, they will find you approachable. Eric.
Wow, you know we appreciate youcoming on your words, your story.
(20:48):
You know you're impacting others now,and given what you went through,
I think a lot of people aregoing to be stronger and take the time
you care about others and look forwarning signs. Thank you for doing this,
It means a lot. Thank you, fred I appreciate that. You're
right. Our kids did play togetherin baseball and uh, I you know,
(21:12):
thank you. I truly believe you'reright that this is gonna help a
lot of folks. Yes, sir, there he is Eric Kramer, Eric
Kramer. And by the way,Eric Kramer still the season leader in touchdowns
and yards for the Chicago Bears.Believe or not that man can still play
(21:32):
still spin the rock, Eric Kramer. Thanks, brother, I appreciate it.
It's pretty powerful, powerful stuff, powerful stuff man to go through that
and to live through that, youknow, in a failed attempt at suicide,
bro woo. Yeah, that's that'stough. And he is. He's
helping a lot of people. Andwhat he mentioned at the end of some
(21:55):
of the teammates that we played withhave reached out to more than him,
but out to me, and he'sbeen able to help them navigate through their
depressions too. So you know there'speople out there to help. So don't
be silent. All right, We'llhave spirituality next. Yeah, he's the

(25:26):
best time out there. Looking forwardto seeing everybody bolt up for Jim harp
or so much respect for the Chargerorganization when he got the gig yesterday and
to quote the new Charge Ahead coach, he says, when I played for
(25:48):
the Charges. And remember he finishedhis career as a Charging quarterback, Yes
he did. The Spanos family couldnot have been more gracious or more welcoming,
being he feels like home and it'sgreat to see that those things have
not changed. Jim Harbor, well, I'm giddy. I know the whole
(26:12):
so you died is giddy for theJim Harbaugh era, five year deal.
And remember those four seasons that hecoached the forty nine Ers, three years
in the NFC title game, wonSuper Bowl Taste when he lost to his
brother John's Ravens in twenty twelve, and there'll be a family feud that's so
(26:36):
far. Next year Bolton Ravens willplay in Englewood. His record with the
forty nine Ers forty four, nineteenand one was Jim Harbor the word lesser
for Harbor probably middle of next week, and as bolts on, Dean Spinos
(26:59):
takes Jim's life line and says, who has it better than us? Jim
Harball, I'm telling you over andunder greatest, what's the over and under?
How many times we hear that phrasein the next and you guys with
me on this? This is thegreatest hire in Chargers history, the sixty
(27:19):
five year history of the Chargers. This is the greatest hire. I mean,
you can go back to the Bolt'shistory. No one is this high
profile of this success profile. DonAir corriealable, he games the landscape of
the Charges. I think he setthem in a whole different direction, don't
(27:41):
you think? I do. Corielwas sensational. They didn't win at all,
but they were. They were excitingto watch, and they they won
some big games. Unfortunately had todeal with the Raiders in their division.
But those Coriel teams with Dan Foutsand John Jefferson, Charlie Joiner, there
(28:02):
was some good team Chuck Munsey,Air Coriel. But Jim Harbor I think
supersedes those glorious times because his futureis unlimited and his success at every level
is unparalleled. Yeah, you know, he's fresh off a national championship.
(28:22):
He's already an incredible success in theNFL, and you know, to work
with Herbert is going to be unbelievable. I am giddy, I am buoyant,
I am going wild. This wasat move, great move, and
we're all, you know, crazy, crazy, jubilant for the Bolts.
(28:45):
And when it gets a love toRaheem Morris, new head coach of the
Atlanta Falcons. What happened to Belichick? Forget it? They went with Raheem
Chilly, chilly, chilly, sensationalhire. I've been pumped up Rahm for
weeks to be a head coach somewhere. So glad Atlanta hooked him up today.
(29:07):
What business man? All right?Vic asmore, Dick asmore, He'll
continue. Do we have sumo today? Vic got some sumo? A little
bit of copy. No, we'regonna talk about that too, learn a
Kopey, that's right, keep itgoing. Definitely need some spirituality. Let's
go Roddy Pete, Fred Rogan victhe Brick Jacobs Spotlight twenty nine Tomorrow,
(29:37):
y'all Coachella and listen. A lotof love, lot of mad respect for
Andre Copitar of your los Angeles Kings. It was Copy night last night,
honoring their captain eighteen years a king, King of Kings. Copy's a pure
winner and he gave the people whatthey want. Bryce and a young defenseman
(30:02):
in the lineup tonight works it outbetween the benches sports free four Gabrikov and
a head on right wing tip tothe right wing board shot past Tim scar
han ja Kovat. How's that fortiming scored the first goal of the game
at the Downtown Frozen Dojo, numberfifteen for the Slovenian superstar. Unfortunately,
(30:26):
it was all downhill after that.Buffalo totally. I played him Kings of
Los e moojo with the Downtown FrozenDojo, Yol alluded to earlier with Drew
Dowdie Man. You know he isKing's royalty as well. When you tell
the media that too many guys justwant to pay their own stats one word
(30:52):
oi, So Kings fans, holdon to your Zamboni's oi you guys,
Billy Joel fans, Yeah, He'sgonna sing at the Grammys in La Oradi.

three years, where he composed theepic Piano Man. He worked at the
(31:37):
Executive Room on Wilship Boulevard for likesix months, and he penned the song
about the room's customers, and soglad he did. What an amazing song
when an amazing body of work.Great entertainer. Billy Joel lived in LA
from seventy two to seventy five.Hell, he's coming back for the Grammys.
(32:00):
Love it, Love it Vic,Billy. He's a storyteller, vict
one of the great ones since ShellTalent. He went to the same college
as my sister, Queen's College,Queen's College. My sister never graduated,
but I'm not sure if Billy Joelgraduated Queens. I don't know what he
(32:24):
did. Did he think it tooksome courses here? Yeah, I would
have ended up at Queen's College,But luckily, somehow I got into the
Courtland States, home of the RedDragons. Enough state the Red Dragons,
Okay, okay, I like thosedragons. Of course, this is the
(32:44):
year of the Dragons coming up inthe lunar New Year Sumo Dale eleven from
Tokyo. No upsets yesterday fellas ohokay. The two little guys are Flying

(33:06):
He beat Medorifuji two little guys.Waka mot o'haru is crazy crazy makaiente
hot six straight wins won by OshiDarshi front will push out yesterday. He's
eight and three through eleven days. But Kolto Miwaka is ten and one,
(33:29):
your leader through eleven days. Heshoved out o Hoo yesterday, so he
is alone ten and one. Coltowaka, he's the pillowy one colton Nowaka ten
and one, the pillow the pillowyone, the pillowy one. He's got
a lot of cushiony uh, youknow, fat, which gives him great
(33:53):
balance, able to sustain, youknow, sustain those big early thrusts.
Right. Meanwhile, Kirishima against Ayishawas all Kirishima by thrust out. He's
nine and two, so Kirishima isone back. I'll show you and on
Osato. That was the match ofthe day. The Yukosakamoo match of the
(34:15):

now nine and two. On Osatois eight and three, and the yoko
Zuna keeps winning. Taranafuji easy winis nine and two. He beat on
(34:37):
No Sho, who falls to nineand three. So insummation of the sumo
after eleven days. In Tokyo GrandSumo opening tournament of the year, Koto
Nowaka ten and one, three guysone back at nine and two Teran Nofuji
(34:58):
Kirishima, and I'll show you. He'll show them, man, I'll show
you with so fierce. Man.He looks your name like that. He'd
better be. He looks at you. You're out of the dose. You're
already, you're in the clay.Your face is buried in the clay.
He's unbelievable. M I'm pumped forthat, A rumph. Who wouldn't be
(35:22):
pumped for that? Day twelve? And where does that lead us? The
spotlight nine? And then where doesspot like twenty nine leaders right to the
