Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we continue on Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete on se
La Sports. Next hour, dinnye bon Signor will be along
Chiefs looking to make a three in a row to
three peat if the Chiefs win next next week, Rodney,
I can't begin to tell you how much money pat Riley.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Makes, Yeah yeah, how many shirts are gonna be published,
how many hats, how many phrases are gonna be out there?
How many times people are gonna mention that, Yeah, how
genius was that of him? To to to what do
(00:40):
you call it? Patton trademark, Patten three p I mean,
how genius was that for him?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
And I think he did it in six different arenas too,
sort of like all mugs, all this all that very
very smart. Now, I don't think the Lakers are gonna
have to worry about three peeting this year, meaning pat
Riley will not make any money from them, but the
salty A. Adam Auslin joins us to talk all things NBA. Adam,
how are you well?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Guys?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
You know?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I bet if pat Riley could trade Jimmy Butler three
three times like he would like he can't stand the
guy that much?
Speaker 2 (01:16):
How did Adam who wants a guy like that probably
get to that point, Adam.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
I don't know, because he's got an opt in for
fifty million dollars next season, which he might use. So
typically you look at a guy like that and go, oh,
he can help get us over the top. But he's
been disgruntled at multiple places. Now, this happened in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Too, so I have Philly as well.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Right, Philadelphia, there were some issues there. But it's just
Jimmy Butler. He's one of those guys. He's got all
the talent in the world, but sometimes his attitude gets
in the way.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
That's a shame. So Jimmy has got the opt in
for fifty million dollars next year.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
He's got it for fifty million, and maybe he doesn't
opt in so he can get one hundred million, but
it's over three years or something like that. But I
don't know. He's burning money right now because if he
was just playing nicer with them and not seeming like
such a malecontent and missing flights and all these things,
it would be easier to move him faster. And he's
not playing nice.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
And it's costing him over three million dollars already.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, with the suspensions, Like I get it. Like he's
a tough minded guy. There is a double edged sword
with him because they top deal.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Adam, No, what's what's he what's he mad about? I
still don't know what's he disgruntled about.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
He wanted, I think a contract extension with them. They said,
we're not giving it to you. We're not paying you
more when you're thirty five, thirty six, thirty seven years
of age, and now we're giving you sixty million dollars
per year. And basically he said, Okay, then I want
to go somewhere else. I want to be somewhere where
I can make all that money on the back end
of my career. And pat Riley's too smart to fall
(02:52):
for something like that. He's not going to pay aging
players that much money. He is a great executive, I'd say,
outside of Jerry West, the next best executive in the
history of the NBA. So I understand it from his side.
And Jimmy is still under contract, so you can make
the argument. And Shaq has because on TNT he said
this last week talking about how well he won the
(03:15):
same thing. Basically, remember when he told Jerry Buss pay
me in the preseason yeah, but you're still under contract.
Like so there's different ways to look at it. There's
a player empowerment error going on right now. And I
understand agents and players they have more leverage than ever
and they feel like they can force their weight anywhere.
And Rich Paul has been very good about stuff like that,
(03:37):
so players think they can do it. And pat Rileyson,
it's not happening here. It's not gonna work here. I'm
gonna play hardball with you. So I don't know. I
think eventually, obviously before next Thursday, he's gonna be moved somewhere.
But I don't know if there's gonna be any guarantee
they send him someplace else that they.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Want to pay him. I will tell you just from
you know, pulling the curtain back. As we all know,
I've frequently traveled with Magic Johnson on summer vacations.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
I've heard such things. Yes, I've heard about this.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
There's a very nice.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Can be stole away just one time. Yes, put me
in the poop deck whatever, I don't care.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yes, yes, I've traveled on those yachts and and been
there for his you know, his uh anniversaries and vacations
during the summertime. Oftentimes on those trips there is a
Mickey Erickson yacht that is accompanied by pat Riley and
(04:42):
they are extremely close and basically joined at the hip.
So the owner of the Miami Heat and pat Riley
are in lockstep and pat Riley has full cart blunts
to do what he needs to do, and Riley says
it it is coming from Mickey Erickson as well. Yeah, no,
(05:05):
And so they're not adults.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Pat Ryley is like Michael Corleone, like he's old school.
He's a badass. He's not going to blink. So, I
mean they went from basically saying we're not going to
trade him, and that could have been just a leverage
player posturing to say your offers need to be better
for him or else, I'm not going to trade him.
Two a couple days later, Yes, we are taking offers
(05:28):
on Jimmy Butler. We are going to trade him. So
I don't think Jimmy Butler at this point is going
to end up getting what he wants, which is another
huge contract after this, no matter where he ends up basically.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
All right, well, talking about a rich Paul client, Aaron Fox.
Now he wants out of Sacramento what in the world
happened there? They fired Mike Brown because word was he
couldn't get along with Fox and they wanted to sign
Fox to an extension. Okay, we got rid of the problem.
Now he wants out at him.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Well, apparently d Aaron Fox was a big fan of
Mike Brown, even though see there's so much dysfunction up
in Sacramento. Has been like this forever, and then they
tasted some playoffs success a couple of years ago where
they finally made the playoffs. They had the longest drought
in sports history, I think sixteen straight years, or at
least it was the longest current drought within the Big
(06:19):
Three of not making the playoffs since two thousand and six.
They get there and they think progress is linear and
it's not. And last season they took a step back
and they got into the play in but they couldn't
get out of it. And now this season they're kind
of in the same spot. They have had a poorly
constructed roster for some time and it's very convoluted there
(06:39):
because the Aaron Fox came into this season and they
offered him a three year extension. But the thing is
he could bet on himself making an All NBA team
and make like fifty more million dollars with a supermax
from them, So he turned down the extension. Rich Paul
is his agent, he's shrewd, he's smart about it, and
he made All NBA just a couple of years ago,
so it's very possible that could happen. But he was
(07:01):
saying and has been saying, Daron Fox says, I need help.
I need more help on this team. Get us some winks,
and for whatever reason, they're guys in the front office,
and they got a couple of them that are analytics guys,
and I thought I'd like them more than I do
at this point because I'm from Sacramento and I was
kind of rooting for them to have a little bit
of success. But they don't bring in winks, they don't
(07:23):
bring in defenders, and Sabonus and Daron Fox aren't elite defenders.
So your two top guys have some flaws there, and
they're not supplementing them with defenders or supporting them with
defenders out there. So they went from being the best
offensive team a couple of years ago when they played
the Warriors in that first round series that ended up
losing in seven games, and since then they've taken a
(07:45):
step back on the offensive end, and they never have
been great defensively. They haven't even been top ten you
need to be. They can't figure that out. So then
they end up firing the head coach again, thinking that okay,
it's easier to move him, even though he just won
Coach of the Year, just gave Mike Brown an extension,
then turning over the entire roster, and look, to some degree,
(08:05):
they're eleven and five with Doug Christy. It has worked
to some degree, but they just lost to Philadelphia last night.
And here's what happened. So basically, they fielded in an offer.
Somebody called into Sacramento. And I know this because I've
been listening to like k ISGK eleven forty and getting
some inside intel on sack Town. Somebody called into their
(08:25):
front office and made an offer for dearon Fox. Then
the front office alerted Rich Paul. It sounds like that, Hey,
somebody called in and just so you know, they're asking
about him. Then Rich Paul goes, oh, well, if that's
the case, we have a preferred destination. That destination is
San Antonio. He wants to go play with Wemby. So
(08:46):
basically they went from not fielding offers to just an
innocuous offer of somebody testing the waters to see if
they could get dearon Fox. They tell Rich Paul, and
now things are spiraling because Daron Fox doesn't want to
be in a place that is so unstable like Sacramento,
where I think he's on his fourth head coach now already,
(09:07):
and he sees a situation in San Antonio where you
could go from the most unstable franchise or one of
the most in Sacramento to a perennial winner. I know
they haven't won since Kawhi Leonard left, but they still
are building the right way. They have Wemby, they have
all the draft picks, they have young players. They can
make a move today for de Aaron Fox. If they
give up Devin Vasel and Castle and two first round picks,
(09:31):
they're getting him, and he's like a top twenty player
in the league. You pair him next to Wemby. And
right now they're out of the play in picture. They
could get back in it, though, and they still have
moves they can make to bring in one more guy.
That would be a great situation. San Antonio then is
right back in the mix. And by the way, Victor
Wemanyama is just twenty one. So I understand it from
Fox's perspective, Like we talk about player empowerment, This isn't
(09:54):
Jimmy Butler. This isn't somebody that is going out there
and missing team flights and making a stick just to
get out of town. He has given them every opportunity
to make a winner, to put together a team that
can compete. And now he's twenty seven and he's like,
am I going to re sign with this team for
six more years or five more years and hang my
(10:15):
hopes on the fact that the Kings finally get it
together with real stability or should I go someplace that
actually has proven it in San Antonio. That's what this
is about right now. I think the Aaron Fox has
been a professional about this because when they fired Mike Brown,
guys the front office did not come out and make
a statement. They didn't come out and face the tough
questions with the media. They left it for Dearon Fox
(10:38):
to have to answer those questions. And what happened was
the night before Mike Brown gets fired, he criticized Diaron
Fox for a play late in the game. Now they
still liked each other, but everybody attached. Oh he gets
fired the next day. It must be about dearon Fox.
So he's the one that gets thrown under the bus
when he actually liked Mike Brown when there wasn't a
(10:59):
real issue there. And by the way, they let Mike
Brown talk to the media like ten minutes before they're
about to get on the plane to go on this
road trip and then they fire him. They actually let
him talk right after practice and then they decided to
fire him. That's not the way you go about doing things.
I didn't mind letting go of Mike Brown because sometimes
(11:20):
you do have to shake things up. It's a tough
business and he's still getting paid. But to do it
that way just reeks of dysfunction within that organization that
has been there for some time now.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah, that is crazy. It reminds me of what they
did with Antonio Brown after the season and the Raiders,
where they let him go to the press conference after
the season and talk to I don't know, I'm here
until they tell me different and we're going to build
on this year and try to grow next year. And
then the next day he was fired. Why do you
let him a guy do that, go to a press
(11:51):
conference and do that, because the narrative out there, Adam,
is that the Aaron Fox and Mike Brown didn't get
along and they had to choose between the two, and
they chose Daron Fox over Mike Brown. Now Daron Fox
is the one and want to get out.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, And you can't lose a star like that if
you're Sacramento. They were lucky to get him with the
fifth pick because the Lakers took Lonzo. I think Josh
Jackson was taken in that draft by the Phoenix Suns,
like he fell to them somehow. And they hadn't been
able to draft very well over the years. They missed
out on a ton of guys, Jimmerferdette, Nick Staskas, Sas Castillo.
(12:28):
They drafted a bunch of bad players. It was Lottie
Devots at the Helm. He did a very poor job.
And then they finally get somebody. And now they're fumbling
the bag again with this guy. And he says all
the right things. He wants to be in Sacramento. He
has not made it a point like, hey, I need
to get out of here. He's not forcing their hand.
It's basically been let's see how things go this season.
(12:51):
Can you guys figure it out? Can we have some stability?
And the head coach gets fired who he liked. The
team isn't playing that well, and it doesn't look like
there's an easy The answer of the front office is
bringing in the right guys. Because there's other rumors that
the front office keeps telling the players in Sacramento that, hey,
we're gonna get John Collins. We basically have a deal done,
(13:12):
and then they mess it up. Multiple times this has
happened where apparently they tell them we're bringing in this
guy and then somehow the trade doesn't go through. I
don't know why they're telling players that and setting them
up to be disappointed, but it seems to be happening.
I don't know what's going on. So now Sacramento's probably
should be looking at should we fire the GM because
are these the guys that we want to hitch our
(13:36):
wagons to moving forward? If or if not, they trade
dearon Fox. Either way, it's like they're not getting it done.
They can't hold onto their superstar. They might have to
trade him. It is a mess there. It is a
big problem, and I would lean towards dearon Fox ends
up in San Antonio by next Thursday, because it just
makes too much sense. San Antonio has the trade assets,
(13:59):
he's the perfect guy to pair next to Wemby, and
Sacramento probably can't salvage the situation at this.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Point, Adam, can you hang for a minute.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Yeah, I'm with you, right different.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Anthony Davis wants a big to join them. Is there
a big available to join them? Let's get into that
next come out.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Let's go back on a throwback Thursday ride. Pete fred Brogan, Hey,
the salty A is with us. Adam Austlin was good.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
We going extra long today? Oh yeah, I mean we
didn't even we didn't even get to uh Clippers and
Lakers yet. But I had a lot to say about
the Sacramento King situation, because that's a.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Maybe you brought it. You brought it that you always do, Adam, Well,
there's a dysfunction.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
You will find me criticizing.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
It, of course you will, all right, So, uh, Adam,
let's get to the Lakers now. A d says, that's
the trade deadline. Bring me a big. I think the
problem is there are no bigs the Lakers either want
or can afford.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Adam knows a big He talked about it big before.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
I've been saying this for a while, like, Yeah, there
is a guy who's twenty three years of age, who's
not just about increasing your ceiling this year, but he
can be the replacement for what you lost in a
Visa Zubos. He can be your future center. He can
play next to Ad, he can be his backup. He can,
(15:18):
you know, be versatile out there for you. Walker Kessler
with the Utah Jazz. I think he leads the league
in offensive rebounds. I think he's at the top or
second when it comes to fueld goal percentage. He is
very good defensively. He can slot in and play next
to Ad whenever he's back immediately, and he can hold
(15:38):
things down while Ad is out. He's twenty three, So
if you give up the two first round picks they
have to trade, you're getting a young player that's gonna
be good, that can be with you for the next
seven to ten years. Like it's not all about this
season with him, It's not just focusing on the present.
(15:58):
He can help you in the present, he can help
you in the future. It's the best of both worlds.
Go get Walker Kessler.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
But I think the issue Adam is that, and Dan
Wiki alluded to this, they might not be willing to
move them.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
Danny Ainge plays hardball. It's possible, but I don't know
if he fits their timeline right now. I don't know
how long the rebuild is going to take in Utah.
They did sign Marketing. He can't be moved till next summer.
So maybe you're gonna have to It starts with two
fas first round picks. Maybe you have to give up
Dalton connect two. Maybe you have to give up Ruey Hachimura.
(16:35):
The chance that you hit and get a guy as
good as Walker Kessler with either of the first round
picks is slim.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
It's very small. It is hard.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
It's a crap shoot in the draft. Like I've looked
over a ten year period of top ten picks, and
only twenty five percent of those guys from two thousand
and six to twenty sixteen made an All Star team.
Top ten picks. It is so difficult to draft well.
So get the known commodity that is a good young
player now that is only going to get better. That
(17:08):
can help you now and beyond the lebron ad era.
To me, it makes sense. You make the godfather offer,
you throw the kitchen sink his way, and Danny Ainge
has no choice but to make that move with you.
That's where I'd go because I think the odds on
favorite when it comes to centers coming to the Lakers
(17:29):
is Miles Turner. But and I like that move. It's
a very good move. He's twenty eight, he's still young enough.
He's shooting thirty nine percent from three on the season,
so he can be out there playing next to Ad
no problem. That has been a rumor for years. They
should go get Miles Turner, go get him. It hasn't happened.
But why why is Indiana giving him up? They're fifth
(17:50):
right now in the Eastern Conference, They're eight and two
in their last ten games. They're playing better. They were
just in the Eastern Conference finals last season.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
He's one of their key ps.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Maybe the two first forces their hand to give him up,
But I don't know if i'm them. You know, we're
trying to make a run now. We don't want to
look like we're selling off. We were just in the
Eastern Conference finals. So I would go after Kessler and
do whatever it takes to get him. And if that
means Dalton connect, I'm doing it because as high as
we all were, I think we fell into the insanity run.
(18:22):
He was having to start the season where he couldn't
miss from the outside. Guys, he went three weeks without
making a three pointer at one point, I think in
the month of December, Dalton, I'm not off on him.
I'm just I'm on board. If that's what it takes
to get Walker Kessler, I'm moving him. I'm sorry. Walker
(18:42):
Kessler fixes so many issues for this Lakers team that
have been there for years now. They've never been able
to replace the model they had when they had JaVale
McGee and Dwight Howard next to Ad And he finally
just made it clear again, very clear pregame game I
want to play the four.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Now.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
It doesn't mean he's gonna be playing the four the
entire game. At the end of games, he'll probably still
be playing the five, just like he was next to
Dwight and Javail. But if you have Walker Kessler, it
gives you more options. I think that would fix their
defense immediately. I'm telling you they would be a top
ten defense right away. If they brought in Walker Kessler
next to Ad, that would fix so much, That would
(19:24):
make things so much easier, and they'd have a real
identity again. It would bring consistency balance to the force
for this Lakers team. That's what they need. I think
that's the move. Yona's Valentiunis is older. It won't take
much to get him, but he's not a great defender.
He's just a big body out there. Robert Williams is
(19:46):
nice when he's healthy, he's really good, but he's never
been able.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
To stay healthy.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Okay, so wait, so so Valentunis is the immediate because
you mentioned him before in this run, go get him
right now. But in terms of long term you're talking about,
Kessler is the guy that if they if they're thinking
long term, Kessler is the guy.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
And Valentias is ten years older. He's thirty three, I think,
and he looks slower than that.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
But with Lebron and his agent AD, you know, in
his prime doing his thing right now, how much more
do you have. Valentiunis, as you mentioned before, could be
the guy to go just go get him the next AD.
But now that you look at it. Kessler could be
a guy now and for the future.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
That's what I think is the best move a guy
like that, because it's not just about this season. Then, oh,
we brought in Valentnis, we gave up young talent. We
didn't make a run. We screwed up. If they don't
make a run and they still have Walker Kessler, they
still have Walker Kessler next season and beyond. That's what
it's about, because there's a lot of uncertainty the direction
(20:55):
the Lakers are going to be going after this season.
Lebron's probably good for one more year, right, That's what
we all think, and then he retires. AD's under contract.
But after next season, what are they doing? Well after
next season, Walker Kessler is still under the age of
twenty five. You have a core, a core member of
your team, a centerpiece, a franchise cornerstone moving forward with him.
(21:18):
Not that he's some great offensive player. He's good, but
he's more of a finisher. He can't really shoot. But
he is a prototypical big that is a great rim
defender and rim runner in today's league and would be
perfect next to Anthony Davis. He would extend Anthony Davis's
career getting Anthony Davis out of playing the five all
(21:40):
the time will prolong his career and bring the most
out of him. Isn't that the way you want to
go about this?
Speaker 2 (21:46):
Now?
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Maybe I'm pleading about something for no reason, because if
we haven't seen Rob Polinka do it by now and
figure that out that they need a five next to
a D, maybe it's just never gonna happen. You know,
Rob Polenka has not done good job the last couple
of years in my opinion, of making sure that their
stars are supported with a cast that really emphasizes and
(22:09):
enhances the abilities of a D and Lebron. They're both
asked to do far too much. They have too many
one way players all over the squad. I don't understand
his roster construction, and I think, and I told you
guys this time last time I was on. But I
think fingers are going to be pointing his way eventually here.
So it's honestly in his best interest to make this
(22:30):
move like it's gonna help himself. I don't care, you know,
his relationship with Kobe, that's a big deal to Genie Bus.
But eventually, eventually, hard decisions are gonna have to be
made and I think Rob Polink is gonna be the
guy in the hot seat.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Yeah, I think you're You're right if you want to
claim it. This is my team. I make the decisions
and you got to own it. Hey Adam, real quick,
what did you make of the the Wimby Zubats confentation
and winby going after bos which you alluded to, nothing
like it always does in the NBA.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Ye, hold me back, Hold me back. I don't blame
Wemby because it was a cheap shot and dirty play,
but of each Zubots apologized for it postgame said I
don't want to be looked at as a player like that,
and I understand why he did it too. He just
got hitting the face on the other end by Wemby
after being hitting the face like two possessions before that.
(23:24):
The refs aren't calling anything, and I think they let
things escalate to a point where they it just got
out of control, like they needed to call a foul.
They were letting things get so rough. Both guys were
getting frustrated. The frustrations boiled over, and that's where it
amounted to. It didn't end up affecting the game or
turning into a brew haha or kafluffle or anything like that.
They're both pros out there. Neither guy is known for
(23:46):
being dirty or anything. It's just the officials not taking
control of the ballgame.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
Okay, on the topic of the Clippers, what can what
should they do with the deadline?
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Well, here's the thing, guys, I think they could be
fighting for some of the same biggs that the Lakers are.
I think they could be in on Robert Williams or
Yonis Valancnis. They don't have the draft capital to go
after Walker Kessler or Miles Turner, but the secondary guys,
the runners up, Valenunis uh and Robert Williams. I think
(24:17):
the Clippers they need help in the front court. I mean,
they're taking on Wemby and the Spurs last night, and
coach lou doesn't trust Mobama to play any minutes against him.
They have had to play small with Batoma out there,
with Kawhi playing center. I don't think that's a long
term solution. Unfortunately, Mobamba, who's twenty six and was like
the seventh pick in the draft five years ago, has
(24:38):
never materialized into a great NBA player. The motor just
isn't there. I was hoping he'd be better this season.
He hasn't. They have a real need in the front court,
and they're likely going to be competing for guys with
the Los Angeles Lakers, which could drive up the price
whichever that team is. You know, the Portland Trail Blazers
could be using them to bit against one another both
LA teams. That's an interesting storyline I think going on
(25:01):
because they both have the same need in the front court.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Adam.
Speaker 1 (25:04):
One final question before we let you go. We kicked
why ten minute quarters in the NBA, you enter, you out?
Speaker 3 (25:14):
I'm out. That's just too much of a change for me.
I don't like that stuff because I'm a I'm not
a traditionalist. I'm not romanticizing the game too much, but
I do like looking at past numbers and everything changes
once you do that. Like I had a hard time
looking at Saquon Barkley getting an extra game this season
(25:35):
and comparing him going for two thousand yards against our guy.
Ed like that to me matters that context. I just
don't like it. That's too big of a shift to
take away eight minutes, you know, in the NBA, I
don't think that's great. I don't think it's necessary. I
don't think it will happen. I just think it's an
(25:55):
interesting talking point right now, but I don't think it
solves a lot of the problems anyways. The best way
to solve problems in the NBA when it comes to
stars playing more and injury issues, extend the bleeping season
by three weeks to a month and get rid of
the back to backs. No yes, no, yes, no. Extended
(26:16):
season extended by three weeks. Either extended or started a
little bit earlier. That's it. That's what you do. And
I would extend it over starting it earlier, because if
you started earlier, you're still competing with the NFL. Who
are you competing with? If you extend the season, Uh,
days of summer in baseball, it's too long at them
too long. It's not it's it would be better. Look
(26:38):
it's not. There's no perfect solution, Fred, But if it
gets more stars playing, it's a net positive. If it
gets more stars out there nightly, that's a net positive
for the NBA. That's what they need. I'm telling you.
It's all about players. It's all about star power. If
you have the stars out there.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
You think extending it makes it better than shortening it.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Yeah, I think you shortened, but they never shortening. It's
just that's a non starter. That's not that's not on
the table. They're not gonna take games away. The money's
too big. They're never gonna take games away. Guys. That's
not gonna happen. The only solution, to me, the real
one is extending the season by three weeks. That's it.
I mean, the Lakers are about to play six and
eight in March, because I know that's a walky reschedule
(27:24):
because the fires here in Los Angeles. The Clippers just
went through it. They had a four and five. It
was the first time that happened in the NBA in
like two years.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Are you saying extending it without more games or and
more games?
Speaker 3 (27:36):
No, no, no, I'm saying eighty two games. But you spread
them out further. By extending the season. You give a
little bit more room. So you take away to back
to back.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
They take away to back to back to back to backs.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Get teams with their stars. The product is so much
better when you actually have your best players out there.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
That's what the.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
NBA needs for ratings. How many games do we see
guys being advertised that don't end up playing. Now, that's
the problem. Fans feel like, is this guy actually going
to be there tonight. I mean, buyer beware whenever you're
buying a ticket for an NBA game at this point.
And it's the schedule that's the problem. And I know
it's different than it was thirty years ago. I'm sorry,
(28:19):
but guys have way more mileage on their legs with
the AAU ball and specialized sports, and you could read
articles that are out there from doctors talking about how
knees are a ticking time bomb now because kids are
playing sports, you know, year round, at a different level
the guys did thirty years ago. That's the difference. It's
not just because well they're weak. They're woosies out there.
(28:40):
They're not as tough as guys were before them. MJ's
trainer said when the season was over, he was playing golf.
He didn't pick up a basketball till September. Like, that's
not the way it is anymore. It's not so there's
more wear and tear on them. If you want stars
to play, make it as easy as possible for that
to happen, and get rid of the back to backs.
That's the solution of it.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Well, well then that's that. Okay, that's a solution. Damn it.
Speaker 3 (29:04):
I thought that would punctuate things very well, Fred.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
Yeah, he did a good job. All right, Adhim, Thanks,
that was great stuff today.
Speaker 3 (29:09):
All I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
What do you say? Let's hear it for the Yetties.
On second thought, let's not come on to throwback Thursday. Yeah,
we got a little lady mom a lot. Yeah, Patty LaBelle,
(29:36):
Come on, Ronnie, come on now, Patty's Pie. It's something special,
something special from I think he's at Walmart. Yeah, that's
at Walmart. Oh yeah, Patty's pies are great.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
I've had to get into fistfights at Walmart to get
one of those.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Yeah, damn right, Patty's Pie.
Speaker 5 (29:53):
So, Rodney, she's such a good friend of yours, Rodney,
whence you drop a line to her and tell her
to bake a pie for the show.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
That's why I can you know. I questioned Patty's at
at Walmart because I know they are mall Mark, but
Patty hand delivers them to the Peat House of the Pies.
Oh yeah, Fred, come on, I'm sorry, I'm not acquainted
with Patty's Pie. Come on, come on, I.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Don't know if everybody you don't know what you're missing.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Yeah, you know, Fred, it ain't pumpkin pie.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
You're buying more of a pumpkin pie guy, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Yeah, you're a pumpkin pie fight guy. Fred, I like pumpkin.
Speaker 5 (30:26):
Pie reminds me of a mince meat pie fashion there.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
Yeah, yeah, he's that guy. All right, are you this guy?
Thank you? Are you this guy?
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Because I was pretty excited. I'm really into team names
and mascots. That's just who I am. I'm kind of
dorky like that. And when the Utah Hockey Club was
gonna call itself the Yetties or the Yetti, I thought,
that is the greatest name in the world.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
With the yetti. What is a ye? It's like a monster.
Speaker 4 (31:02):
It's like an abominable snowman or sasquatch or sasquat.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Is everything yety? Like I see cups with YETI as
he things with YETI as he seats, and everything's YETI
what what? What's a YETI? Well, that's what it is,
like a sasquatch.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
Oh, and there's another reason you see that name everywhere,
because there's a company called YETI coolers.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
A pretty famous and large one. Fred not just a company.
I think everybody knows Yetti.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
That's why, you know, because they made everything is Yeti? Yeah, yeah,
so that's why. That's why YETI is what it's like
a big snowman. I know the company is named after it,
but what what is a Yeti? It's like a snowman
or like a monster or something like a monster.
Speaker 4 (31:49):
It's like it's like Bigfoot. Basically it's bigfoot.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
Yeti is supposed to be the equivalency of the Bigfoot
of the Pacific Northwest, only there is in the Himalayans,
the Himalayan Mountains.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
That would have been great. That would have been great,
But unfortunately, the Utah Hockey Club could not come to
an agreement with the Yeti Cooler's company in a way
to partner, so they had to take the name Yeti
off the table. Oh no, and I think that sucks.
Why wouldn't the Yeti Cooler company want to come to
(32:22):
an agreement with the hockey team?
Speaker 2 (32:25):
To me, it makes sense. How did the Yeti Cooler
company capture the name of the Yeti, which is like Bigfoot?
Can get like, can anybody use Bigfoot? Bigfoot? Is not trademark.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
It's not trademarked. So YETI, I guess the company trademarked it.
So obviously the hockey club couldn't trademark it unless they
reached an agreement with YETI the company, and they couldn't
do it.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
But before YETI the company, there was no je it
was no trademark. But YETI was widely known as like
a form of Bigfoot or abominal snowman. Correct, And so
that's it's not like untrademarkable or whatever you want to
call it. Like Bigfoot, anybody can use Bigfoot. Hey, I
(33:06):
got a Bigfoot cooler, I got Bigfoot choose, I got
a Bigfoot laces. I'm gonna put this Bigfoot Bigfoot TV.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
There's a four x four Bigfoot truck, exact monster truck exactly.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
I don't think you can use it for commercial purposes,
is what the issue is when it comes to so you.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Couldn't be the Bigfoot company, correct. All right, So anyway,
that's out, which is really sad.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Here are the choices.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
The Utah Wasach that's the nickname that replaced Yeti, and
its logo still features a snow monster. The Wasatch Mountain
Range in Salt Lake City inspired the name. The other
options are the Utah Mammoth and the Utah Hockey Club.
YETI would have won. He's only would have been the
(33:51):
key to success. But because YETI is out, those are
the choices. The wasach was and the hockey club was sage. Yes, mammoth,
Utah Mammoth. It just doesn't roll off the.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Tongue well like Utah Jazz does. Well, no, because the
New Orleans Jazz did. But right, yeah, no, the Utah
Jazz doesn't. Why didn't they change that name? They should
have in the years, and they've had multiple owners of
the Jazz lately, right, they've had different owners come into
the Jazz. Yeah, well now owns the hockey. Yeah. Why
(34:29):
why wouldn't they change that name of that jazz?
Speaker 1 (34:32):
What doesn't he do with twofer when he's naming a
hockey team renamed the Jazz. You got three names, pick
two and give them to your teams.
Speaker 4 (34:39):
But they kind have used the same mascot too, because
I believe the Utah Jazz actually have a big foot
in a jazz jersey that jumps off trampolines and dunks
basketballs and all sorts of things. It's kind of like
the Phoenix Sun's guerrilla. So he coulda just hang out,
just hang around and you know, do the hockey games
and the basketball games at the same time. Yeah, save money.
Apparently they couldn't do that though, So that's unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (34:58):
But the Jazz should have changed that name years ago.
Their logo too, so makes sense. Oh yeah, I'm in Utah,
I'm in talk Lake City. That reminds me of jazz jazz.
Note it's yes, I mean New Orleans at work.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
Any Bonny James don't perform a provoy.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
James ain't going to Provo winfred Mar Salaz is not
going the provo performing nightly at the jazz clubs in Provo.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
No, so you got Wasach, Mammoth and Hockey Club. If
we were to pick which ones would we pick?
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Ronnie?
Speaker 1 (35:37):
Which what will be the new name of the team?
The Wasach the Mammoth or keep Hockey Club?
Speaker 5 (35:42):
Well, despite the fact that when I hear Mammoth, I
think of Mammoth Mountain, I would probably say Mammoth because
he closely represents the climate there.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
All right, Kevin, what would you say?
Speaker 4 (35:52):
I would agree with that. I don't like any of them.
But of the three, I would take Mammoth. Wasatch sounds dumb?
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Okay, Rodney, what are you gonna go? I would just
I would if those were my only choices. I'm going
Utah Hockey Club. I'm not going Mammoth. I'm not going
why whatever was? I'm not doing that. Mammoth does even
feel right when you say Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club,
(36:21):
because it's a lesser of the worst, basically, Yeah, And.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
I would not go was Sage and I no, I
think I know hockey club and that's not great. It's
better than what's that creative? It's not creative at all?
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Do they have in Utah?
Speaker 1 (36:41):
I mean, these are the final three. They had six,
they narrowed them down to three. The Yetties were gonna win,
but now they're faced with this.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Yeah, I can't. I mean, what's the what's a snowy?
Speaker 5 (36:54):
How about the Utah Tabernacles?
Speaker 2 (36:57):
How about the tabs? For sure? I like it right now? No,
the Tas aren't.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
I don't think that'll work. I don't think the Mormons
won't work.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
No, No, that won't work. That won't work at all.
Speaker 5 (37:09):
How about the Utah pipe Organs?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Okay, keep your pipe organ to yourself.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
I mean I'm thinking animal, you know, like.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
The snow leopard or something like that or something. You
know that. What's the official animal of Utah?
Speaker 5 (37:26):
How about a lynx? I don't know if that's the
official animal, but a lynx is as a cold weller,
uh the cold weather but in there w n.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
B eighteen the lynx.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Yes, that's a Minnesota, Minnesota lynx.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
The state animal is the elk.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Elk about the elks Utah elk elk? Very well?
Speaker 4 (37:48):
It is around then they have the whole thing with
the Milwaukee bucks, and then you have to have a
fight between the elk and the buck, and it's the
whole thing.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
No, I think I take the elk in that one. Yeah,
if an elk and buck for who would win?
Speaker 4 (38:04):
I think they might be the same thing, to be
honest with you, Well.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
On different Yeah, but the bucks sound better than the elk.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
It does, absolutely.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
Yes, I think an elk is an elk and a
buck is a male elk.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
Fred. Oh well, if that's the case, then I'm gonna
go with the I mean they had a fight bison.
What about the bison Utah bison?
Speaker 5 (38:24):
Is that native to Utah bison.
Speaker 4 (38:27):
Yeah, there's animals in Utah. There is the American bison
in Utah.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
Yes, yeah, the Utah bison, Utah, Idaho, Montana, there's bison. Yeah,
that's the Buffalo rain.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
When the Buffalo Bills get upset, you know what, they
have more important things to get upset about.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
Yeah, what's happened to them the past few years? Yeah? Ie,
they think more wings in Buffalo than they do the
actual buffalo cat.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
Speaking of wings, the state bird for Utah the California Goal. Now,
isn't there a team, a minor league team called the Goals.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Fred Wait a minute, Okay, So years ago in the
Western Hockey League, Salt Lake City had a team called
the Salt Lake City Although know they were the Golden Eagles,
that's what they were. This has been called the problem
when their owner committed suicide.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Oh wow, yeah, that'd be an issue.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Yeah, way to bring it down.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
Well, it just struck me because I'm a Western Hockey
league That's why it pisses me off. The Tucson the
Utah Hockey's club's minor league team is based in Tucson
and called the Tucson road Runners. Because there's only one
city with that name, and that's the Phoenix.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Roadrunners, Arizona, Arizona. Though Arizona Roadrunner Arizona, there's road Runners
in Tucson as well as Phoenix.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
Right, yeah, but that's a dirty tea and nobody wants
to talk about that. Nobody wants your name associated with
the honey from mouth.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
Right now, dirty tea is where it's at.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
The dirty t is not where it's at, dirty t
where it's at, it is it is.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Does you ever disrespect the dirty te what's wrong with you?
Speaker 1 (40:16):
Keep you out out of your mouth, dirty tea?
Speaker 2 (40:22):
Oh my god? All right, well we'll have to figure
out the name of the hockey team later.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
Yes, okay, let's get rerunny, let's get ready for some football.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Let's do it. Let's bring on Vinnie Bonds in your
next
