I think they're going to impose their will. I'd like

our good friend Dan Weiki, currently just outside the Mary

playing Minnesota, and you know, in local news it's imperative

that you go live back in the day at eleven o'clock,
despite the fact the game's been over two and a
half hours and everybody knows the result, you have to
go live to show you're there. So it was one
fifteen in the morning, Minneapolis time, and we thought, what
a funny idea this will be. We'll do it from
the Mary Tyler Moore statue. So we go out there

and I'm standing there and you know, they're getting ready
to toss to me, and I looked to my I
was to my left and it's it's very close to
a street. So I look to my left and I
hear this the sound, and I look over and there
are these two enormous and enormously drunk fat guys. Okay,

they are yelling at each other now and there are
two women with them, and the guys are so drunk
they start to fight.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Wait, they've got like two women are like they're two
day girlfriends or wives or whatever or with them, so.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
They start to fight. But I mean, they're really drunk
and they're rolling around, and just as I go on,
this happens. So I'm there to talk about the Lakers
in Minnesota. What I did is I told the camera
guy just shoot that, and I narrated the fight for
three and a half minutes and I threw it back
to the studio. Oh no, that was the whole sports report.

That was And Fred, So when you got that local
Emmy later, where did you put it in in your house?

I put it in the same place where I won
the Emmy for Morgana the Kissing band It chasing me
through Johnny Carson Park. They're next to each other, Morgana,
the Kissing Bandit and the drunk guys fighting. Thank you.

Margana loved you, though, Fred, I do remember that she
absolutely loved you.

why I'm a pros pro is that the fourth quarter
of Game two the series kind of looked like a
couple of drunk, fat guys fighting.

It kind of did just kind of like throwing these
wild exhaust to the Haymakers while occasionally grabbing at their
knees because they're exhausted.

that I wrote about it today. I went back there.
We do this thing other reporters where we transcribe every

said it about his coaches, he said about himself, he
said about his players. He said about Jordan Goodwin and
Jimani Kamara, Max Christie and Jared Vanderbilt and Dorian Finney Smith. Basically,
what he's saying is it is tough people who scare
the bleep out of anybody in their way, and this
is what he wants out of his team. He wants

them to be banshees, and they have I think over
time developed some of this, and I think that in
this series, if the Lakers, I mean with JJ Bilden
as we walked out of the building on Tuesday, it's
the only way we can win is if they are
all ban cheese. And I think Game two is a

good example of that. If you combine that level of
intensity and commitment to doing the little things into playing
hard and focus and intentional with some better shot making,
some better offense, which is like definitely an area of
growth for the Lakers, you should feel pretty good about

where they're at. If the the latter can happen and
the first can't be sustained, the Lakers are in trouble.

Which, okay, So that being said, Dan, how big a
game is this? One game three diet series tied one
to one. They're back in Minnesota. You know the crowd's
gonna be, you know, crazy everybody wants to beat l A.
Red said, he's not worried, but I think this is
this is a huge game, huge game for the Lakers

to win. Not necessarily for Minnesota to win, because you know,
I think they're the underdog here, but for the Lakers,
I think this is a huge, huge game. I want
to say must win game, but it's a big game
for him.

Yeah, I think it is. It's close to being a
must win, right, Like it's obviously it's not a must win.
You can play behind in a series. You know, if
you're down on one, you can die the series. If
you're down to one, you can die of the series.

You win at home, you know.

And it's Europe three too, right, Like it's free like,
but there are these pivot points that come in a series.
In game three is one of the pivot points, particularly
if you're the home Timmy buall game one, like you
need to build on what you did in game two.
And I think that's, to me, is why this is
such a big game. It's not so much because whether

or not it'll decide the series. I mean, look, it's
the first to four, it's not the first of two.
I'm sure whatever happens I'll react to just because that's
human nature. But I think when you view kind of
the way the Lakers match up with Minnesota in the
big picture, and you look at the fact that this
is a team that's held them, i think on their

ninety five points four times in six meetings this year.
You know, you look at a Laker defense that had
to play like incredibly hard in Game two, and they
played incredibly hard, and it was still like, you know,
kind of like grasping at the game in the fourth
quarter because they couldn't score the basketball. Thirteen points in

the fourth quarter I think, you know, one of the
lowest scoring outputs by a winning team in a fourth quarter.
I think it might have been the lowest scoring in
the Laker history in a win in the fourth quarter
in the playoffs. So I mean, like it's not a
sustainable method, right, Like they have to be better offensively,
And I think that that's why you know this is

such an important game, is because you want to see
them take a step forwards while still keeping their edge
on defense. Because this is a hard matchup. This is
as tough I I mean, this is the West, right,
This is when when two or seven are viewed as
the same basically, or two through eight in some ways,
really seven are viewed as the same teams. I mean,

they're all coin flips, and I'll lot of ways, and
you know, this to me still feels.

Like a coin flip. I'll tell you something. And I
thought the Lakers did a very good job of imposing
their will in Game two, which they needed to do.
They are banshees and just looking at it. And I
understand the problems that the Timberwolves present, but if they
play the way they can play, honest to god, I

can't see Minnesota beating them again if they do that again.

Dan, Yeah, I mean I think you know obviously, I
think like, look, you have to score. You have to
find more points, right. I don't think you can count
on holding a team to eighty five points regularly. Minnesota
has skilled enough offensive players. They're going to be at home,
Their role players are going to make more shots, They're

going to make slightly better decisions, player with a little
more energy, Like that's all going to happen. I do
think that if the Lakers, like if the Lakers can
keep ninety percent of the energy that they had at home,
and they can kind of shore up some of the
offensive stuff. You know, if they can do a better
job of getting into the paint and getting into the
paint earlier in the shot clock, if they can more offensively,

if they can get out and transition a little bit more,
if they can you know, count on their depth a
little bit, right, Like, I mean, I think that was
one of the things and in Game two that kind
of went under the radar, right it is like, I
mean the massive minutes that Luca and Lebron and Reeves
all had to play, and like that's part of it.
But like, you know, if they can get twelve minutes
from Jackson Hayes, if they can get twelve good minutes

from Jerry Rantam build and I think I'm with you,
But those are ifs, you know, and there're certainly ifs.
I mean the game that I hold all this up to,
and it's still like, so you know what's in there
is like you know what they did to Oklahoma City
and Oklahoma City when they met on the first time, right,
it's like when you really saw or even like in
Denver when they played in Denver with Luke Dantis for
the first time, where they were like crazy locked into

their game plan, played with a ton of energy, hit
open shots and kind of blew the game open. They
had that capability. It starts with energy and attention. And
I think the things that Minnesota does well, or that
the timber Whisms already do well, is they disrupt your
intention by being long and physical and athletic, right like Nikhila,

Alexander Walker, Jay and McDaniels, Rudy Gobert and the paint Like,
like all those guys are disruptors. Anthony Edwards can be
a disruptor. They do that, and so they're going to
disrupt your energy that way. And then you worry if
the atmosphere is going to disrupt your attention because it's going.

There's gonna be that guys fighting it over the place.

Yeah, yeah, it is gonna be crazy.

So that being said, I got, you know, you gotta
at least I got the feeling that Lebron's gonna be there,
Luca's gonna get his uh. The intensity level for those
two guys is going to be there. And we've seen
it all season long where Austin Reeves has consistently kind
of been that third guy who else has to step up.

I mean, is it Austin Reeves has to continue or
is it every or is it ruly? Is it Jackson
as as you mentioned, got to step up a little
bit more? Who else has to step up other than
the two main guys?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
I mean, so you know, Justin Russo, who covers the Clippers,
had a really funny post the other day about moneyball
and about like replacing Paul George, and I would encourage
the readers to go check out. It was really funny
and like sort of the speech of like, you know,
we're gonna do it with all these different guys if
you moneyball this, like I say, Rannie, basically, it's like

they need to find like fifty seen more points on offense, okay,
and so where do you get those? Like that's let's
let's just parcel these out really quickly. Right, Let's say
they can get two more from a Jackson and his
lab all right, like you know, three more made open
threes from Austin Reeves who made none, you know what

I mean? And certainly he's making threes. So now we're
up to eleven. You know what if Jared Vanderbilt instead
of you know, airbowling that three like attacks the rim
and scores and like scores at the at the bucket,
like okay, now we're up to thirteen. Like I think
these are the ways you can, you can kind of
chip away at these type of things. I don't think
it has to be, you know, full on, you know,

Austin MUVEs has to go off or Mariachimura has six
or seven threes, Like, I don't think it's that. I
think it's when the opportunities come, like like all these
guys just have to be a little bit better. And
you know, particularly I know with Austin, I think he's
played well. Uh you know, he shot shot the ball
well from three in the second half a Game one.

I think was good inside the arc in Game two
back in the paint. I think that's gonna be really
important here. But like he's a better shooter than he's shown.
He's got to make open threes. He just has to
make open threes Ruy Hotcha Murat when he's opening the
corner when they're unguarded, like Boren Finney Smith. Those guys
have to make those threes. They don't have to make
all of them, but you have to make some of them.
And I think if the Lakers can do that stuff well.

Defending with that edge, Yeah, they're really really hard to
beat by anybody, Minnesota included.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
If they don't.

If you start, you know, if it gets down to
it's gonna be a game that's gonna be one hundred
and two to ninety seven. You know, it gets a
little trickier, particularly if you're a road team. And so
I think to me, that's that's gonna be really important.
One thing I would I would tell people to watch
for tonight. If the Lakers need to hang on the basketball,
this can't be a high turnover game for them. You

can't allow Minnesota to get into transition in the way
they did in Game one, to get open shots, to
get up at threes, to get nas where you did
the rhythm. If that happens, this will be a loss
and the Lakers will be facing you know, if if
two to one felt like if if that feels like
a big game, h three one is gonna feel like

a pretty big game too, or two one, I'm sorry
on Snay's gonna feel like a massive game. And you
know that's the playoffs, all right.

So now I'm getting bored and nobody's paying attention to me,

and I'm not asking them to. I'm being a good student.
I'm just facing the wrong way.

I just get up and I walked to the sink
and I opened the drawers because I'm facing the wrong

knife in there that you would cut a cake with

I take the knife and I sit back down. So
the teacher is still talking, and all of a sudden
she hears this and she looks back, and because I'm
so bored, I'm just taking the knife and throwing it
against the bulletin board like a dart, and you can

just hear it sticking in there. She comes back to
me and she goes, what are you doing. I said, well,
I'm just throwing the knife against the bulletin board because
I'm bored. Then they turned me around and let me
sit in the front of the class again. It's true,

were throwing a knife at the bulletin board. Yeah, because

Well, let's not bury the lead. Why the hell would
you have a knife at school for it? No, because
it was in the drawer.

They would tackle you and put that school on lockdown immediately.

I think they had it there if they like brought
in apples to cut up or cake or something, then
they left.

It there, left it there and just wide open for
a crazy kid like yeah, for.

Yeah, it wasn't the greatest move I've ever made, I'll

a highlight where I was bored and just doing that.

from the back of the room to the front of
the room so you couldn't be a minuce back there.

To the principal's office by throwing it for throwing a
knife or anything.

back then, friend, principal have the authority to spank you?

I mean I remember kids would have they would go
into panic attacks if they got called to the principal's office.
And we had a principal and uh that was the inmate,

had a bad hip, right, so yeah, he was a big, tall,
you know, former athlete, had a but like six' five

and kind of, slender you, know kind of an old
old school basketball, player played sports when he was. Younger
but he had a bad. Hip so we kind of
walked to the side a little. Bit but he would
always hit his hip like as if to put it
back in. Place every third step he would have to
hit that y right so, everybody so people would make

fun of him when he would walk the halls and
they would see him, coming or after they he would pass,
by everybody start hitting their hip and they started walking
crazy and didn't. It after a, while he couldn't stand,
it so he got pissed. Off everybody did that get
called to the office and he would basically, say you
do that, again then you're gonna come in here and
get three. Swats and you know those those days you

get the parents had to sign off on, that like
if your kid acts, up you, know or is it?

Friend well sometimes they didn't even ask the, parent they
just like did it, Right but a lot of times
the parents you would have to get to. Okay AND
i remember these three, kids they're just badass. Kids they
they were the kind of kids that got away with.
Everything and they did the hip hitting the hip with
Mister edmund as he walked by and he caught him

doing the. Hit and these three, guys the bullies of the,
school the sweat coming down their face when they got
called into the principal's office and getting ready to get that's,
why you, know if you just hit a bully in the,
mouth then they'll stop being a. Bully just even the
thought of them going to the principal's office sitting, there

and he made him wait, too if They edmand made
him wait for like forty five minutes before he brought
him in one at a. Time and he brought him
in one at a. Time and the first guy got
it and got it, bad and the other two sitting out,
there they started sweating and crying and all that and
all you could. See and then the bell rang when
they came, out because Mister edmund planned it that, way

so it was in between. Classes as everybody bell, rings
they come out and the guys come out, too and
those three bullies were crying and, sweating and everybody's laughing
and pointing at him because everybody did. That but he
made an example out of. Them, yeah you, know don't
talk about my, hip but man to think, today if you,

could if you're principal could hit a kid like, that
spank a kid with a big wooden, paddle what would happen?

Today, well let me tell you. SOMETHING i THINK i
might be a little. Off there are at least sixteen
states and maybe more in this country that still allow that,
today that still allows, today where you can swat a,
student not. EXAGGERATING i just read this the other.

Day that it's not illegal for a principal or school
official to swat a.

Kid still. ALLOWED i don't know if they do, it
but it's. Allowed it's not against the. LAW i can't
even imagine that. Happening, No so WHEN i was in,
yeah WHEN i was in elementary, school our principal he
also had the, paddle but our principal Was Don. Landy

Now Don landy was a little different because he only
had one. Arm so you can imagine.

really seemed to happen to The dodgers last, year as

had bullpen games run out of. Pitchers so what is?
It And Major League baseball has been looking into, this
and so was The. Dodgers everybody's trying to figure out
what in the world was happening and why it happened
the way it, did and, apparently and it seems like
it's the simplest thing because they're saying it's obviously the

way they're being taught to. Pitch obviously it has to.
Be it's the wear and tear on the. Arm so
the report showed its velocity and spin. Rate Andrew friedman,
said we have looked into. This we've learned a lot
in the last six, months and we'll learn a lot

also involved in this the, commissioner said it is velocity
and spin. Rate so the arm is basically doing things
it's not built to, do and pitchers are being taught
to throw that, way not just in The dodger organization
but throughout. Baseball apparently that's, it and that's why you've
seen the number of injuries you've. Seen.

Yeah, Yeah and that was echoed by our good friend
Doctor Neil, eltroge who is the, guru the walking, whisper
the epitome of orthopedic. Surgeons he's the guy everybody goes,
to and that was one of the things that he
conveyed to me WHEN i had a chance to, really you,

know grind him down on why these injuries, happen and he,
said exactly the same. Thing it's, velocity but more more than,
that it's the spin, rate you. Know and and he
also alluded to the changing of the baseballs over it
used to be with the, baseballs you, know the seams
on the baseballs were a little bit, higher and when

(30:13):
they are, higher there's there's better grip for the pitchers
and and you can spin it more with. That and
since since they have kind of taken the the the
raised seams on the, baseballs taking it down quite a,
bit so it's not like it used to. Be and
so you got to work extra hard to get that.
Spin and what spin does is create movement on the.

(30:35):
Ball so if a pictures whether he's throwing a, fastball curve, ball, slider,
splitter or, whatever the spin rate helps it move. More
so if you're getting a break of you, know twelve,
inches you you might get a break of fifteen inches
if you if you if you spin it a little bit,

(30:58):
harder a little bit. Better and so that's what and
kids know this from a young, age and maybe that's
part of it is that we know so much information and.

Spend at this, philosophy then you're gonna get another two
inches on your break on your. Slider and kids want
to do that because what do we want to. Do
if you're a, picture you want to strike people. Out

it used to be a career ending, surgery an. Injury
it is a rite of passage for most kids that are.

if you're a pictuer and it looks like you're going
to be a picture in high, school at some point

two and he works over the summer with some pitching
coach and IS i can get you to throw ninety.
Seven what kid is not going to say? That what
kid is not going to do? That how DO i
get to ninety? Seven, well you, know it's the spin.
Rate it's the thist's work on your on your, whip
on your arm to get the velocity up so you

(32:25):
can go from ninety two to ninety.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
Seven it's probably comes down to a very individualized. Thing
one size will not fit. All. Here they have to
analyze your, body look at your, mechanics and try to
figure out what it is you can do to achieve
your highest level of success without hurting, yourself without injuring.

(32:47):
Yourself maybe some guys aren't going to throw ninety. Seven
maybe they're gonna throw ninety. Two maybe some guys aren't
gonna have as much a spin on the. Ball maybe
they just. Won't but if that's the, case maybe there
are other things they can figure out to do without injuring.
Themselves this is a big, deal and when the final

(33:07):
report comes, OUT i can assure you that someone's going
to try to make adjustments in Something they're not going
to spend all this time and all this money to
look into this and then show up, with, well look
this guy just throws it too hard and because of
that he's Got Tommy. John something is going to happen
as a result of. This when it's done in about six,
months they will do.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
Something it'll be interesting because just the hardest throwers are
not always the most. Successful and so will you go
back and look at it and analyze and Go, No
it's less about my spend and my. Velocity it's more
about my. Location and that's WHERE i got to. FOCUS

i can put a, ball low it outside but yet
and on that borderline strike, zone or low it inside
or high at, inside but nibbling at that strike. Zone
that's more effective than me throwing going from ninety four
miles an hour to ninety eight miles an. Hour and
if it's, changed which is actually most pitcher will tell

(34:12):
you it's, location, location, Location you can locate a. Pitch
it's better than it's better to locate a good pitch
than to throw hard and hoping that you can get
it by.
