Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we continue on Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete on a
five seventy LA Sports. Coming up during the two o'clock hour,
David Massey will join us from Dodgers Stadium. Last night,
the Dodgers well wrapped up their series with the Padres,
and wrapped it up in a big way. If you
have not heard our number one, A lot of the
conversations centered around just the battle between Mike Shilt and
(00:23):
Dave Roberts. Dave Roberts feeling that he was not respected
and because of that things kind of escalated there. So
now let us bring on from sports and at LA
man who played in a major so he knows more
about this than anybody. Jerry Harriston Junior, Jerry, thanks for
coming on.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Was of course calling on Fredroon. How you guys doing.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
We're doing well, all right? Why don't you just sum
up what we saw last night?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well, I mean it was toted chaos. You mentioned Dave
Roberts obviously showing some emotion, and rightfully so, manager of
the Padre came running out, you know, to protect his player,
which is fair, that's fair, and things got heated. Benches cleared,
a lot of pushing and shoving led by the managers.
(01:13):
I actually don't have a problem with that. I think
as two managers for trying to protect their players. You
have a manager with the Padres, they had just lost
three in a row to the Dodgers leading up to
that game. Obviously they're winning that game, and they end
up winning that game. He's fired up. Dave Roberts is
fired up as well. That happens, especially with two teams
(01:36):
that do not like each other, have a history against
each other. Now, I want to address also Tatis getting
hit first and foremost, I hope Tatis is fine. I
hope he's not injured. You never want to see a
player and Roddy, you know this. You played for a
lot of teams. You're gonna have some animosity, You're gonna
have some inks, sometimes hatred because both teams are trying
(01:59):
to win. You want that. You want that. And I
think the young players get a bad rap now this
generation that they don't have enough, you know, hate, tred
toward one another. Everybody wants to be buddy buddy. I
like that the Padres and the Dodgers do not like
each other. I think it's great for sports. I think
it's great for baseball. That being said, there is no
way in the world Jack Little making his major league
(02:23):
debut is trying to hit anybody. He was not trying
to hit Bananna Tetis shooting okay, obviously that he was
getting hit around a little bit, didn't have the best control.
He was making his major debut. He did not try
to Hitana Tetis junior. Unfortunately, he did hit him. It
didn't look good, But I was hoping. I think Dave
(02:44):
Roberts was hoping that the manager would realize it's a
rookie on the mound making his major league debut. He
was not trying to hit him. Now, when I do
have a problem with when they went after a time.
If you want to hit Otani, okay, it better be
below the waist, right below the waists, Okay, they went up.
Now he got hit in his right shoulder because he
(03:05):
ducked right. It could have easily hit it hit him
in the head. That is unacceptable. Hey, I'm old school.
If you want to hit ee for and I hit
a guy, okay, I get it. You're trying to protect
your players. But when you start going above like they
like they did Otani up in the neck, area that
is extremely dangerous. That as a no no. That was
(03:26):
a no no back in the fifties and sixties. Okay,
certainly in my era in the nineties, two thousand and
twenty tens. You don't go up up like that. Can't
do that. So you know, hopefully a squash. Otani did
an incredible job diffusing the situation. Class act o Tani
a class act man. Here's nothing too. You'll forget Otani
(03:48):
pitches as well. He pitches as well, so he's gonna
have a ball in his hands in the future. So
hopefully it's squashed because don't want to see anybody get
hurt or get injured, but hey, it's baseball. Sometimes things happen.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, Jerry, was there a.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Part of you though, Was there a little part deep
down inside that wanted to see Otani react in a
way like, oh no, that's not okay. I know he
did the right thing. Just put that out of it. Hey,
I think he did the right thing. I really do.
But there was a part of me because exactly like
you said, and we've known this from the time you
(04:29):
play Little league and you're going on and this is
a little bit old school, but if you're going after somebody,
you don't go for the head. You keep it below
the waist and you send that message and you be
done with it. But the fact that they went upstairs
a little bit, was there a part of you said,
I'd like to see Otani kind of look at him,
(04:50):
either point the bat at him or just point his
finger at him and say, hey, that I get it.
But that ain't cool. Don't do that again.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
You know what I'm gonna say. I'm gonna put myself
in that situation. I would have reacted differently. Okay, I
would have react to different But here's the thing. Otani
was being himself, and Roddie you know this. You never
want anybody to be fake. Right. What does Otani do best?
He kills people with kindness. Literally, he tips his hat
(05:21):
to the manager before every game, the opposing manager hips
attack to the umpire and the catcher. Then he hits
a five hundred foot home run. Right, that's his personality.
When he gets on the mount, he does this thing
on the mount, right, throwing one hundred miles an hour.
Now he's starting to get healthy. So this was so
Otani that it was on brand. I think the last
(05:41):
thing you want to do is have a guy be
out of character? Right, everything we've known about Otani is
first class. And even if you're gonna hit me, okay,
I'm just gonna hand out the way I play by
beating you with my back, with my legs, and now
eventually with my arm. So listen. I love the way
he reacted. I would never reacted that way, but that's
(06:02):
not my personality, right, and I kind of respected Otani's
and I kind of admired it. Killing with kindness. And
the way he diffused last night and went over to
the padre dugout, Wow, that's just shows. Yeah, the class
one thing.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, it's one thing to tell your own team, Hey,
settle down, don't get up, Hey, nobody leave the dugout.
I got this, this is good. But he actually walked,
I mean walked towards the padre dugout and diffuse it
on that side as well. That yeah, that to me
was it put it on a different level.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Yes, Hey, Jerry, I said this earlier. You played you
tell me to me. Now, this is personal between these
two teams. Everybody was a competitor. Everybody's on the field
and want to beat the other guy between the lines
to me. This now seems personal. Am I in the ballpark?
Speaker 2 (06:50):
You're not not only in the ballpark, you're in the
kitchen of the ballpark. It's definitely personal and deep down,
Fred Rodney, I love it. I'm not gonna lie man
I love it. Listen, Manny Machado. I know a lot
of Dodger fans hate Manny Machado, and I know Manny
says a lot of things. Manny's the captain of that team. Okay.
(07:11):
I've known many a long time. He is an incredible player,
not a good player, incredible player, and he has to
back his team. He's got to protect his team. So
I certainly see his side of it, and he's gonna
say things because this is he's getting paid a lot
of money to win. He's getting paid to win. On
the flip side, Tatiz Jr. I hope he's okay. I
(07:32):
said it again. He's an incredible player. But hey, you're
not supposed to love each other during the same division.
Both teams have gone at each other, not only in division,
but in the postseason. Right. I felt last year, whoever
won the Padres Dodgers Series, We're gonna end up winning
the World Series and guess what we were right. I
thought that the Padres beat the Dodgers last year. I
(07:53):
thought the Padres did win the World Series. I thought
that was the World Series. So I love the fact
that the pod players do not like the Dodger players,
and I love the fact that Dodger players do not
like the Padra players as far as on the field battling.
You know what I'm saying. I think it's great for
the game. And listen, we all know it's the Giants
(08:14):
and the Dodgers as far as the rivalry. But I
think it was Blake Harris, or maybe it was our
own David, that's say. Maybe it was David. He said,
you know, this rivalry is a rivalry based on hatred,
not on decades, like the Giants and Dodgers. That's okay,
That's a great thing. So listen, they're a two hour
(08:37):
drive away. Both fan bases do not like each other.
And I think it's great for the game, and I
think it's going to be continued. Fireworks is definitely gonna
be musty TV. It was a couple of nights ago
and it will continue to be musty TV the rest
of the year.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Yeah, and Jarry it's okay. I mean I said this earlier.
It's okay to have multiple rivals. I mean, obviously, the
Giants are the deep long history that that is a
rivalry that will will always be there and the main
rivalry of the Dodgers. But you can have multiple rivals
(09:14):
over over periods of time and and and that's okay.
And the Padres have of late become, you know, one
of those rivals of the Dodgers. Will they ever get
to the giant level, No, they won't, but but for now,
it is okay to have multiple rivals.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
Jerry. Also, when you when you look at this this.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Dodger team, and and and where they are now are
you are you surprised or shocked or how do you
feel about the way they've been able to maintain I'll
just say it, maintain their dominance and in baseball with
all of the injuries that they've they've they've suffered throughout
this season.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
You know what, that is a great question because honestly,
if you really look at their roster the way they
were constructed. Listen, going into season, we all knew that
they had a great lineup, but the strength of the
team was a rotation some people were saying this was
the best rotation in recent memory, so they were supposed
to carry us this season. Obviously that went out the
(10:16):
window early on in the season, and it has been
the offense that has carried us. The bullpen guys have
stepped up in the bullpen to help us out as well.
So surprise isn't the word, because I know what it's
like to be in that clubhouse as far as seeing
the guys work, the leadership that's in that clubhouse. Dave
Robertson's staff do an incredible job making sure that every
(10:38):
single day is different and we're going to attack the
game as we're going to go win this game today, okay,
And they are able to compartmentalize one hundred and sixty
two game season. They're doing as good as anybody. Freddie Freeman,
incredible leader, Mookie Best, Shoelatani as well. So I am
not surprised that they've been able to win and at
(11:00):
least be at the top of the division. But they
know that in order for them to win the World Series,
they got to get healthy, especially on the pitching side.
But to get back to the rivalry, I completely agree
with Rodney that you can have multiple rivals. Listen, when
I was growing up, I grew up in Chicago. I
was a kid. I was a huge Bulls fan. Okay,
when Michael was coming up and Scottie Pippen was a
(11:24):
young player, they really didn't have a really good team.
They get beat up physically by the Detroit Pistons. Hated
the Pistons. They get beat up physically by the Boston Celtics.
So when they went over to play in the finals,
they were playing the Lakers. That's how I became a
Laker fan. Obviously, everybody love Magic Johnson. I loved the Lakers.
They're my West Coast team because they were beating up
(11:45):
on the Celtics and the Pistons, the two teams I
hated as a kid. So you can have multiple teams
that you despise. So obviously the Dodger fan base Padre
fan base don't like each other. Nothing wrong with that, Jerry.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
It's still a long way to go in the season.
But given what happened uh in the last two series
Dodgers and Padres, and Dodgers dominated them, is that is
that kind of put a little shadow of a doubt
in the Padres minds. I mean, they did not look
good in the two series the Dodgers dominated, and I'm wondering,
and each one of those games counts too because they're
(12:21):
division games. Was that was that a bit of a
crushing blow to them?
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Would I wouldn't say it's a crushing blow, But make
no mistake about it. Uh, there's without a doubt, if
you're the Padres, if you feel you're going to get
the Dodgers, you get them out because Blake Snell is out,
one of their races, Tyler Glasnew is out, rookie has
been out, so you feel like this is the time
we go get the Dodgers while they're injured. So what
(12:48):
I really believe in listen, aj Preller has been aggressive.
We all know the last several years putting a team
together on the shield, whether it's in the off season
or at the trade denmark. So maybe they get more
aggressive before the trade dining, trade deadline or at the
trade deadline to bolster their team. But make me the
mistake about it. In the end, I really believe the
(13:09):
Padres are going to be there. The Giants will continue
to be there, So the Dodgers are going to have
to continue to play great baseball, get healthy and take
nothing for granted.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Uh No, I agree with you. It's time to get
the Dodgers is now. And teams that are missing the boat,
like we just saw Padres losing five to seven to
the Dodgers in these last couple of weeks is not
good for them going forward. Jerry talking about individuals on
this team and a team of superstars, and we all
(13:40):
know who they are, but talk about Andy Paz and
his growth and his development man over the last year
and a half, and how important he is now to
this team.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Important that is a perfect word. He is important, vital
to the lineup and also important to our since you
can put him anywhere in centerfield. He has grown, leaps
and bounds in his route running. His arm is as
good as anybody. It's accurate whether it's from centerfield, right field,
or left field. And he's a guy that we will
(14:14):
lie in the middle of the lineup. You know, when
Taska Hernandez went down, he was a huge part of
our middle of the lineup and keeping us afloat and
winning a lot of ball games. So he has grown,
and this is why you stick with young guys. Man.
When you have young guys that are talented that you
see their work ethic and you see that, Okay, he's
taking his lumps now, but I'm telling you he's gonna
(14:37):
turn the corner. And he's always had the bat speed.
He always had that want to and wanting to make adjustments,
and boys, he made adjustments as the plate man. He
has a complete hitter. And also he's got that dog
in him too. You know, I love the fats that
helped him out. They call him at the very next night,
we have call your shot on our pregame show, you know,
(14:58):
being I was actually working out with the team little
bit before a hat of playing in a game yesterday
in Birmingham, Alabama. So I saw Piz there early, getting
early work taking ground balls, making sure his hands are
good so when he charges balls in the outfield, he
can be confident with his hand to make sure he
gets that strong and accurate throwoff. And I just saw
his work ethic in the cage. I'm like, this kid
(15:20):
gets it. So they call him out and so who
do you think you are? The next day, I said,
I'm calling him as my call shot because I know
he's got in him.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Right.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
Yeah, what did he do well? What did he do.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Four for four, you know what I'm saying. So, I mean,
it's just great that the Dodger has done a great
job of bringing him along developing. Yes, the Dodgers get hey,
we have a huge payroll blah blah blah. Yeah, but
we do an incredible job developing guys like Will Smith,
Dalton Rushing and he Pie has our young pitchers. So
they've done an incredible job with developments and obviously at
(15:54):
the big Leg's level.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
All right, well, Joey, thanks for coming on. Really appreciate
your inside as.

Oh, FIFA Club World World Cup. Yeah, that's a difference
a club. What is the difference? These are club teams. Okay,
these are FIFA club teams.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Yes, these are FIFA club teams compared to the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Okay, that's what he is, private, private clubs. Yes, that's
exactly what it is.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Okay. So Angel fans, how about this right now? Well, first,
they took three or four from the Yankees. That's impressive,
no matter what, that's impressive. Okay, took three or four.
And right now, there are game and a half out
of the final wild card. All right, shades of last year.
There are game and a half out of the final
(18:28):
wild card.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Last year, the year before the year, they didn't trade Otani.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
I mean, they are always in this position, Fred, right,
So there the trade deadline is approaching. You're a game
and a half out of the final wild card. Of course,
we remember what happened last year. They went right in
the tank and it was over after they made all
trades and then they got rid of all the guys
(18:53):
they traded. That was two years ago or two years ago.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah, ye, yeah, Well they we suggested that they should
go out out and get as much as they can
for Otani.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Right, they decided to go for it. They went for it,
and most of the time you go, hey, we're gonna
give your credit going for it. That was stupid, all right,
But anyway, here we are again. They're a game and
a half out. So now you start to think, okay,
we got a shot here. I mean, the guys they
could move are like Kenley Jansen and Tyler Anderson. Now,
(19:23):
if you moved either one of them, you could probably
get a few young prospects and help in your rebuilding process.
You could do that and probably could get a couple
of good ones. Yes, or or do you go, Look,
we are so close, we can taste it, we can
smell it, and all we have to do is keep
(19:45):
doing what we're doing. We'll make the team as a
wild will make the playoffs as a wild card, and
then we'll see what will happen. Well, what will happen
is you'll lose, but damn for it. But they will,
so it doesn't matter what do you do. I think
some fans, some Angel fans riding you're upset because they're
(20:07):
thinking in the artimornal world of baseball, So yes, saying
there's a chance. If that's the case, we're not trading anybody.
We are just going for it now long term, that
will continue to be a prescription for disaster. So even
if you're close to this go round, don't you think
(20:31):
you try to make a move you're a seller and
get better?
Speaker 3 (20:34):
What do you think? Sometimes you've got to be honest
with yourself. You gotta be real with yourself. You got
to look yourself in the mirror, fad and say who
are we? What are we right? And I don't want
to say that I was with them on the Otani
(20:56):
situation because that was a bad deal and Otan was
never coming back to the Angels.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
But I will and I understood it. I understood it.
They're in the hunt.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
They got Otani, they got Trout, and they can make
a run. So let's let's let's let's try to do
it right now? Are they really? Are they really a
team that thinks that they can win it or a
team that thinks they can go deep in the playoffs.
If not, then you you got to be aggressive in
trading and developing and getting some young talent that gets
(21:32):
you ready for next year and the year beyond, because
you're not gonna win the World Series this year. You're
not even gonna go deep and you're not even in
the playoff picture.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
You're a game out of the wild card.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
So make the moves that you need to make to
make yourself better two years from now, three years from now.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Yeah, here's the thing. Where do you stand? Where do
I stand?
Speaker 5 (21:59):
Here?
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Here's the thing. I'm all about constructing something for sustained success,
because really that's how you went in life. That's how
any successful business operates. Oh we're really good now, and
then we're terrible. That's bad business. You're not constructed for
sustained success in anything. If you're a restaurant, you open
(22:20):
and you have two good months and people are thrilled,
and if by month three you can't afford meat, it
doesn't work. It just doesn't work. You're not built for
the long haul. And the Angels aren't built for the
long haul. Now, what they've done is they've taken this
approach where you're a top draft pick. You're in Some
teams might send you to the miners for a while,
(22:41):
not us. Get in here and play. You're going to
learn on the job. It's a strategy. It's a strategy,
and in theory, if you're taking your top guys hopefully
down the road, it pays off. And if that is
your strategy. Then what you are trying to do is
build something that lacks and if you were trying to
(23:01):
do that, then you sacrifice your ability at this time
to be the second wild card. The only way you
go for it is if you are in first place
in the West and you're yes, that's the only way
you go for it.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Right, if you're out of wildcard not not one game
out of the wildcard picture and wherever they are right now, yeah,
half game and a half. Yeah, No, that's not when
you go for it. You go for it when you're
you've had an incredible season and you're leading the West
and nobody thought you were, and all of a sudden
we find ourselves three games up on everybody else in
(23:41):
the West. Yeah, you got to go for it then,
but not now, No, no, again, it's a band aida
and a shotgun blast. Eventually you bleed at whoa whoa,
whoa whoa, Ronnie Kevin, write that down.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
It's a what a band aida and a shotgun blast?
Damn Eventually you bleed out. No, you need surgery. You
need surgery. You know what you need reconstructive surgery.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
On a shotgun blast. Right, You're gonna need some surgery, right,
reconstructive surgery. We have to reconstruct you. Okay, well you
have to reconstruct the roster. But the only way to do.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
That is by understanding where you're at and stop perpetrating
a fraud. Stop convincing people. God, we're pretty good. Actually,
no you're not. Could you be sure? You fans want
you to be? Absolutely? Does it take time? Yes? So
(24:38):
if all of those are true, then why are you
trying to convince people we're pretty We're just a guy away.
No you're not. No, you're not. If they had addressed
this before they let O Tani leave, they'd be further
ahead right now. Just think about this. Think about the
decisions you make in life. Then when you look back
and I guess, you can't second guess because you've already
made them, but you can learn from them. You can
(24:59):
learn from those decisions.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Think about that, Brad, Think about if they would have planned. Listen,
we've got a plan. Otani's here with us. He's up
in two years like you started two years before.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
He was all the way up. Yep, two years.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
We've got a plan, and we can we can, we
can be the directors of our own movie right now
and we've got two years to make that happen with
Otani trout what we've got constructed on this team. Let's
start making that happen. Now, let's start making those call
Let's figure out how we can make this happen and
(25:37):
just do it where you're not up against the gun
and you're flying by the seat of your pants and say, oh,
we're just gonna go for it. Now it's into July.
We find ourselves in a pennant race. Well you're not
really in a pennit race. You're still outside looking in,
but we'll find ourselves close. So we're gonna go for it. No,
you have a plan in place that you already know.
(25:59):
This is what we're going to do, and we're going
to get a boatload for Otani, and that's how we're
going to go about it. And we're starting to talk
to people right now about who we want and what
kind of prospects we want to build this thing for
ten years out because we got a generational talent that
everybody's gonna want in Otani. So let's go get the
(26:22):
most for him, because he clearly doesn't want to be here.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Let's go one hundred percent right one hundred percent right,
that's what we're going to do. And if they had
done that, would they be in a different place today.
Maybe they just might be in a different place today.
When you look back at decisions you've made in your life,
you can't change them, but you can learn from them,
you can grow from them. It's pretty simple. You make
(26:48):
a decision, it didn't work, you figure out why, and
you don't make the same mistake again. See, the Dodges
are different in this regard because they basically have so
much money. The Dodgers can win on the major league
level and spend money developing their young talent to eventually
(27:09):
move to the major league level. It doesn't work that
way in most places. They're not as capitalized. So most
places build with young players and don't step out of
their comfort zone, and eventually, if they've done a good
job of scouting and developing, they get there. Now, the
Dodgers are different because they can do whatever they want.
(27:30):
They've got the best minor league organization, they've got the
best major league organization. Well that's because they have money.
Most don't, So you have to work differently. You have
to be shrewd, you have to be smart and to
think about the Angels, history repeats itself. If they're a
game and a half back of the final wild card.
But they have a chance to make a couple of
moves with guys who have contributed this year that have
(27:52):
helped them, and they don't do that. They've learned absolutely nothing,
they have absolutely no clue. You have to you have
to make moves when you can, because let's also be honest,
there ain't a ton of people banging down your door
(28:14):
to get your guys. You've kind of put yourself in
a really tough spot.
Speaker 3 (28:18):
No, yeah, Fred, they had they had pocket aces, had
pocket aces, and they did not play it right. They
didn't play it right. They could have got everybody involved. Instead,
what do they do? They tried to put too many
chips in. They got everybody scared off.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
Oh we know what you're doing, We know what you
got now see you okay? Bye?
Speaker 3 (28:46):
Oh my god. No, they played it completely wrong. And
here we are in another situation where they've got outside
looking in and what.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Do you do? You're the Angels. What do they think
they're going to do? All right, let me check into
the hotel. Excuse me? Is that is that an alligator?
We'll talk about that.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
We've made it even easier to take LA Sports with
you this summer.
Speaker 4 (29:16):

seventy LA Sports podcast a preset on the iHeartRadio AP.
Speaker 5 (29:22):

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Oh yes, come on back, Come on back, Rodney Pete,
Fred Rogan beautiful Friday, What a day, What a date?
June twentieth. Oh man, it's beautiful. That's why we live
in southern California. Yeah, but it's gonna be warm this weekend. Oh,
it's gonna be hot, Freddy. Yeah, it's gonna be his hot.
(29:49):
It's gonna be hot. All right, you go to check
into the hotel, you're ready to go. I'm not saying
it's the four seasons, but it's nice enough.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
You've been driving a while, You get out, you pull up,
you walk up, get ready to go into the lobby
of the hotel, and then you see the alligator. You
see an alligator standing in front of the lobby of
the hotel. Hotels in Virginia, Fairfax, Virginia, just twenty miles
outside of Washington, d C. So now when you see
(30:20):
the alligator, And let's face it, that's not who you
expect to check you in. You don't think so. No,
it could be a bellman, could be a valet, certainly,
could be someone just comes out and walk comes you in.
See an alligator there, you go to yourself. Hmm. I
don't know if this is a friendly place. I don't
know if this is a place I need to be.
(30:40):
Turns out the alligator was being transferred from a New
York zoo to North Carolina and somehow got loose and
started walking around. Okay, but it got me to thinking,
what are some of the weird things that you've seen
in your life that were unexpected that you didn't you
never imagine. You opened the door and stood there, and
(31:04):
what I know for you? It's monkeys. Oh you don't
like monkeys?
Speaker 3 (31:08):
No, do not like the monkeys? Hey, hey, we're the
monkey No, you know you know, I remember the show
back in the day. You're not a monkey fan. Not
a monkey fan. I was in I tell the story
real quick. Brett was in South Africa right coming around
the corner.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
Holly.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
We had the kids, you were young. We took a
trip to South Africa, went to Cape Town, Johannesburg, where
a very nice, very nice, excellent, very nice resort in
Cape Town expect. Yeah, but it was one of those
resorts that they really cared about the environment, so they
built the resort and not trying to disrupt the environment.
(31:49):
So it's right in the jungle, right in the jungle.
So you heard sounds at night, you heard everything at night,
which is pretty incredible. And we're at the pool and
Holly says, oh, they one of their floaties. Let's go
as the kids were young, can you go up there
and get it. I did, went up there, got in
the room, got the floaties. I'm walking back to the pool, Fred.
(32:12):
And this is one of those indoor outdoor hotels, so yeah,
you know, you walk around outside. The hallways are outside.
I mean, the rooms are right there, attached, but the
hallways where you walk is outside. And I turned the
corner and there were two what I thought were giant monkeys,
(32:32):
giant monkeys, big monkeys, big monkeys on all fours. Yeah,
And I found out the difference between monkeys and chimps
and all that stuff when I was there. But monkeys
had tails, all of that, big giant monkeys.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
I stopped. They stopped and looked at me.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
I I've been in situation, fred where I was a
little nervous. I had never ever been in a situation
where more panic than in that monkey situation could.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Have been fight or flight. Oh my god, that for you,
heart pumping. And you know, animals can smell fear. They know,
they know when you're nervous, they know there's a different
smell comes off.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
I was certainly nervous. They smelled everything on me. Thank god,
thank god to this day that there were two housekeepers
that were right there at the time and just very calmly,
very simply just shoot the monkeys away. And the monkeys
(33:33):
jumped over the rail and went up into the trees
and left us alone. But for that moment of thirty seconds,
my life flashed in front of me. Because we've all
seen the videos. We all seen the videos of monkeys
and what they can do. They can tear you apart.
They're extremely strong, right, and when they feel threatened, they
(33:54):
can tear you apart.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
They'll tear your face off, yes, just rip it right off.
Absolutely scared to death.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Never been that more scared in my life ever than
that time turned in the corner and seeing two monkeys
stare at you.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
Her tell you one person, un monkey and around. That's
David Bassett and he will join us from Dodger Stadium
next
