Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, here we go on Monday, Fred Rogan Rodney
Pete on a five to seventy LA Sports Rodney, good
Monday to you.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
How was your weekend? My weekend was pretty good, Fred,
Let's just say, much better than the Dodgers weekend. Huh.
I know we're got to get into it, but yeah,
weekend was good. I didn't do a whole lot, watch
some games, relax a little bit, but yeah, yeah it
was pretty good.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
How was yours?
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Weekend? Was fine?
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Yeah, but the Dodgers kind of pay put a sour
note on it. Let's get into it.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
Let's start. Let's just be honest. It's not pull any punches.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
And again, there's never a reason to panic until it's
time to panic.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Okay, so let's start with that. It's a long season.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Teams go through ups and downs, and uh, I don't
think it's time to panic, but I'll tell you that.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Wait wait, wait, wait you I don't think they are.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
And we're in what.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Is it twenty first yeah almost till I yeah, and
Fred Rogan is not panicking right now.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Nope.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Dodgers get swept by the Brewers season sweep, you know,
and you're not panicking you're not in the red yet.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Here's the thing. I don't think you need to antagonize me.
I don't need I don't think you need to goad me.
I don't think that's necessary. It's not time to panic yet,
but it is time to admit this is pretty bad.
I mean, I don't care if you're a die hard
and you think they're gonna win the World Series, I
think they'll be fine. This is pretty bad. This is
(01:37):
a team that looks completely out of sync. This is
a team that is not hitting. This is a team
that is committing heinous defensive errors. Yeah, this is a
team with a lot of trouble right now. I don't
know how it got to this point. Also, it is
a long season and they'll come out of it, that's
for sure. But right now, just to be fair, this
(02:01):
is ugly. This is hard to watch right now, Rodney,
It is hard to watch.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
And you know, I know, listen, we're going to do
it and everybody's doing it, because that's what you do
when teams are winning or when they're losing, especially, you
want to analyze it and then sometimes you want to
overanalyze it and go through what is the cost? What
is this where usually it's not just one thing. Usually
(02:28):
it's a combination of things. And with the Dodgers, there's
a combination of a lot of things. But guys just
don't go from being extremely gifted and productive to all
of a sudden falling off a cliff. And it feels
that way right now. Yes, it feels like they are
falling off a cliff right now, but also there's an
(02:49):
opportunity to change that up and go back the other
way as well, because these guys are gifted and these
guys are talented, and it's not going to last forever.
But it is a long season. And I know it
sounds like a cliche. Oh, it's a long season. They'll
get through. They're going to have their ups and downs,
ebbs and flows as everybody goes through. All those things
that you say are true. But you want to try
(03:11):
to minimize that and not allow that to get into
your head so much that you don't come out of it.
And that is a that's a critical thing, and that's
going to be a job with that Dave Roberts and
the coaching staff are going to have to do with
these guys, is is try to figure out a way
to maintain the sanity going forward that it doesn't slip
(03:33):
into a season long deal. That is. That is the situation.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
And I don't think they've got enough good players and
too many quality players have been doing a year in and
year out that they won't allow that to happen. Look,
I said, they'll be fine, they'll be fine. I said,
right now, it's hard to watch, but they will be
fine because they have to be fine, and they will
and that's how they're built. But it is hard to watch.
Nobody's having any fun. I'll tell you that, no one's
having a good time. I will tell you that. I'm
(03:59):
talking about the guy, not the fans. You can even
see it on their faces. It's like there's a distinct
lack of owns like that explosive fun.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yes, it doesn't exist right now.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
No, it's a direct contrast to the team they just played.
Right The team they just played is the way the
Dodgers started the season and had stretches this season where
it didn't matter how many runs they were down, it
didn't matter how the game started. They knew in the
end they were going to find a way to win.
And that is the way Milwaukee is playing right now,
whether they won ten straight now, I believe it is.
(04:37):
We said it before the All Star break. They were
the ones that didn't want the All Star Break to
come because they were the hottest team in baseball and
they still have maintained that. But they believe even when
it was three to nothing to start that game yesterday,
you felt, and I'm sure in Milwaukee felt this way,
Oh that's nothing. We're coming back. We're gonna get our runs.
We're gonna get our run, We're gonna win in the end.
That is their mentality right now. And again that is
(04:59):
also a thing that can last the rest of the
season or it can be short lived. And it's all
it takes is one bad outing and then it starts
to snowball and you like start to question yourself. Then
you lose two in a row, three in a row,
and you're like, oh my god, what happened to us?
One in ten in a row?
Speaker 3 (05:16):
What do we do? What do we do differently?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
And it's really hard, but when you start to overthink it,
you make the matters worse. But the Dodgers and the
Brewers are in opposite directions right now. The Dodgers are
trying just to hold on to a win and try
to save a win and try not to lose. And
the Brewers are like, we're gonna win this game no
matter what the score is.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Which was exactly the way the Dodgers started the season
their mentality. If you remember early on, say, oh, they
were behind, but that's not a problem. There's no concern.
They got them right where they want them. They're behind
right now. Now they're gonna put it on them. If
you remember, that's exactly how the Dodgers started the season.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Not that way. Now.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Look, we can sit and talk about the pitching situation
because it has been just devastated with injuries. That ain't
the problem, folks. They're not hitting. They're not hitting. Blake
Snell is not gonna hit third for the lot for
(06:17):
the Dodgers. They're not hitting. That's the problem. Now, Mooki,
they put him at the leadoff spot, trying to shake
things up a little bit. Let's just call it the
way it is. And Muky himself admitted this. He has
been awful for Mooki. He has and he's frustrated. He's upset.
(06:38):
It's not like it's not eating at him or bothering him,
but he can't try any.
Speaker 4 (06:43):
Harder, because you can only try as hard as you
can try.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
What are you gonna do? Swing harder? I mean, so
he's doing it. He's got to fight his way through it.
But you've got Muky, and Muky is not having a
great year. Oh Tony Homer yesterday, but it's been a
bit slow for him too. Start looking at just the lineup.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Freddy, Freddy even you know, unfortunately in the situation upened yesterday,
and we'll get into that, but he's been struggling. He's
not the same Freddie Freeman.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
He he had one stretch Rodney where he was going
and then back to.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
This right and the guy that's like you could count
on at least last year during that World Series run
was tasker Rnandez right for a big hit. Every every
other game he came up with a big hit. Where
he is really really struggling. It's pretty struggling all season.
(07:41):
And it's hard because you want him in to line
up because you feel like he's a guy that can
get it going at any point, and when he gets
it going, he can be extremely hot and and and
be streaky. But man, he's struggling right now too. So
there's so many people up and down that line. Tommy
Edmonds is struggling a guy that counted on last year,
So they've got a number of guys in that lineup.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
You're meant. You're right.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Pitching was not the problem yesterday. Kershaw pitched his ass
off yesterday, had a three run lead that defensively they
gave up in one inning with two outs, you know,
and should have won that game yesterday. But but coupled
with the bad hitting, especially runners in scoring position. But
(08:25):
even that, it doesn't seem like they're getting runners on
base for it, and when they do, it's with two outs.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
It seems like there's just a distinct lack of energy.
I don't know how else to describe it. I don't
want to say they seem flat, but there just doesn't
seem to be any mm. Now we're on base, Now
we'll score. That doesn't seem to be, at least from
what I'm observing, what they're doing. We got a guy
(08:53):
on base, the next guy don't make it out, not
will score this one. It's like they're not playing with
that that swagger they had. It's like they're back on
their heels a little bit. And you talked about Kershaw
and the defensive problem yesterday. Let me tell you he
was not pleased after the game. Let's hear what he
had to say.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
Oh, no, I was just frustrated myself. Yeah, we shore
three runs and I give a walk. It's just frustrated.
Speaker 6 (09:17):
What was what kind of led to that for you?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
I know you were relying on the splitter a lot.
Speaker 6 (09:21):
Was that game planning kind up was working for you
or what wasn't working for you?
Speaker 5 (09:26):
I thought I pitch okay, I just made some mistakes,
and just I was just frustrated. It happens we're not
playing well as a team, and I wanted to help
win the game today and didn't do enough to do it.
Speaker 7 (09:35):
So that's frustrated on splitter or something that quick pitches
like just fivemart to face the second ship start or
what listener would light behind that?
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Guys, I don't know. I don't know.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
I threw it at what I thought I needed to do.
I didn't really, That's yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
Frustrating.
Speaker 7 (09:52):
Is this fresh obviously just considering especially having some of
like farty game hurt at the end of the day,
It's like that's having a sour note to start the jails.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I'm frustrated. We're all frustrated. Yeah,
I don't know how else to say. We didn't win
a game, No excuses, Just play better.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
I don't make anything of it. They beat us.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
I need to play better tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
I don't know how much you say. I'm gonna give
it to myself in trouble. So let's just let's just
call it.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Thanks.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
And that was that, mm hmm. Probably good. He stopped
when he did.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, you keep talking, you keep talking, and he starts
saying more and more and more and more. So he
was very smart. And that's a veteran move, because you
don't want it. First of all, you don't want to
call anybody out. You don't want to call your teammates out,
and and and then start blaming someone else. That's not
who he is. It's not what he wants to do.
And those guys know, Look, PI has no he's got
(10:52):
to make that catch. And and Tommy Edmond knows he's
got to make the throw. And they know that. Nobody
else needs to tell him that. They know that, and
it just for them, trust me, it hurts them more
knowing that Kershaw's on the hill and they're not backing
them up like that. That bothers them more than if
anybody else was on the hill. But yeah, you know,
(11:15):
you know what they need. They need a good trip
to Colorado. It'll cure what ails them. Are they coming
up soon on the schedule. They need a good trip
to Colorado to get them to right this ship. And
sometimes all it takes is a win. And then I said, Okay,
now we know what that feels like. Let's go back
(11:36):
to win it again. So let's talk about Mogie for
a second. The struggles he's had at the plate.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Now, the suggestion has been by some throughout the year
maybe the problem is he's playing shortstop. Maybe there's too
much focus on defense, It is too physically demanding. I
still think that it has.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
A lot to do.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
And I know we're well into the season. I think
if you get sick like he did, yeah the beginning
of the season, I don't think that just goes away
in a month. He may still be battling something. And
that's a strength issue. Yeah, right, strength, quickness, all of
those things you get you lose that much weight and
you're sick that long you're you're starting behind eight ball
(12:19):
and you're playing ketchup for a long time. And he'll
never say it. He'll never say I'm not you know,
I'm not one hundred percent, I'm not feeling well. He'll
just you know, he'll eat it and own it. But
I guarantee you, yes, you lose twenty five pounds and
you're not a big guy to begin with, and you've
got to fight your way to get that weight back on.
It'll affect a lot of different things, your speed, your strength, everything.
(12:44):
And I think for a guy like Mukie who's competitive
like that, he's probably overthinking it too. You're probably thinking,
I'm pushing it too hard. I got oh, okay, today's day.
He's probably you know who was it? I think that
Sky had said that Mookie's he's in the case more
than anybody, trying to rectify his swing and trying to
get it right and trying to get I guess his
(13:06):
you know, his elbows in concert with each other, so
they come down together, and he's swinging in rhythm. He's
in it and working at it over and over and
probably maybe too much and overthinking it because sometimes that happens.
But I gotta believe that is affecting him like I
think it's affecting Taskar Hernandez. I think Taskar is still
(13:28):
not one hundred percent not right. And I'm not saying
one hundred percent because of course of a season, because
nobody gets one hundred percent outside of opening day. But
I'm talking. I think he's got some ailing issues going
on that's affecting him. Do you think with all the
talk about Mookie and playing short, do you think and
I didn't think it would even be considered, but now
(13:51):
let's put it on the table, do you think moving
him back to right field might be a good idea?
Speaker 5 (13:55):
No?
Speaker 2 (13:55):
No, no, I don't because you're moving you move in
the right field. Who plays short?
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Edmund?
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Edmund plays short? Are you are you upgrading that short?
I don't know. I think Edmond's a better center fielder
and he is an infielder. Here's and then if you
if you take him, you put him in right when
you put Taoskar and left yep and that pa has
you know, play center field. No, I don't think the
(14:25):
shortstop is the issue. To be honest with you, I
think it is a combination of him being sick and
I think it's him trying to overcompensate and trying to
push a little bit too hard because he's a he's
a competitive guy. But I know, I don't think the
short stop. I do believe this though, and they made
that didn't work out yesterday, but I think him and
(14:50):
I don't know if they'll continue it. Him leading off
could be a good thing for the Dodgers. Yeah, I
think him leading off could be a good thing. And
with Otani hitting second, yeah, people say, well, he's guaranteed
more at bats than anybody else. Yes, he could, but
hidden second. I don't think it's gonna be that much
(15:11):
of a drop off if he gets You know, if
you get four at bats in the game and maybe
five from time to time, that second hitter is probably
gonna get five as well. I don't think it's a
big drop off. What I think where the Dodgers are
lacking is they're lacking runs, scoring runs, and nobody's on
base when Otani's either leading off with a home run
or coming back up, because the bottom of the lineup's
(15:33):
not doing well. And I think it'll help Mooki get
better pitches with Otani hitting behind him. Nobody wants to
put Mooki on and have somebody on and Otani hit
a two run homer. So I think it's I think
it's a good move and will be a good move,
and I hope they stay with it.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
All right.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Yeah, I was wondering what you thought about that. But
you see, there's an answer to every question. I have
the answer. I know how to funk. I know how
to turn this whole thing around. Okay, Now, sure you
may say that's insane, but I'll see this is a
technique that has been used before in this very market,
with this very team. To me watching them, they don't
(16:14):
look like they're having a lot of fun. And you
can tell when guys are having fun. They're playing, they're going,
they're doing. They're not having a lot of fun right now.
Tough time for him with Minnesota in town. Tonight goes
against every principle of what Andrew Friedman believes, what Dave
Roberts believes, and probably what you believe. But I will
(16:36):
harken back today's gone by and take the Tommy Lesarda
approach for tonight's game, and that approach, I'm going to
pick the batting order out of a hat and whatever
it turns out to be. It turns out to be.
If will Smith is leading off, because I pulled him
(16:58):
out of the hat first, he's the leadoff. If On'tani
is hitting eighth tonight, he's hitting eighth. Pick the lineup
out of a hat and let him go out there
and just have fun. That is my suggestion. That is
what they should do. Rodney, pull it out of a
hat like Lasorda used to do. What do you think
of that idea? I think it's insane.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Well, of course you do it, Sae, But I thought
it was a great idea.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
That'll shake things up, that'll put a smile on everybody's Instead,
I'll put a little bounce in their step.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, yeah, that'll that'll do it right there, changing.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
It up.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Off tonight?
Speaker 2 (17:35):
There you go, Yeah, yeah, Otani hits seventh or eighth
in the lineup, right.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
It's one game.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Why not just have some fun.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
You come up and the game's tied in the ninth,
you know, you got the top of the order, you know,
lead off Conford, Oh, Edmund and whoever else is struggling
right now instead of I know Faddy's out, instead of
instead of Betsie Friedman or Tony Will Smith, You're you're
not leading off with those guys. You got canford O,
(18:06):
you got Edmund and ta Oscar at the top of
the lineup. How about task leave off tonight or Ruiz
at the top of the lineup?
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Fast guy? I like it.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Home run yesterday, I know, I can't believe it. He
stuck out his bat and the ball and it was great.
Speaker 3 (18:20):
It did, it did and it went out. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Now, so you get him to throw to the right base.
If we can get him to throw to the right base,
can we do one step at a time?
Speaker 3 (18:30):
Why?
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Why are you asking so much? Why are you being
so demanded? It's really unnecessarily a little critical.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
I'm a little critical right now.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
What these boys play, Get out there and enjoy themselves.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
Shake up the lineup for you know, what if it works, Red,
what if they win like ten to one and beat
Minnesota by pulling the names out of hat?
Speaker 3 (18:46):
Do you continue doing it?
Speaker 4 (18:47):
You do it again tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (18:49):
No?
Speaker 3 (18:50):
God?
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Why? What? Oh?
Speaker 1 (18:52):
This is working so well right now? This is really working.
They're just ripping the cover off the ball.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
So you're gonna do the same thing with Pitt. Okay,
We're gonna start with Banda banda. You gonna start the game,
and you're gonna be our starting picture. It's gonna be
like a bullpen game.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
You can't rest.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Yeah, Pitchama motom, you're coming in in the eight you
have the pictures have to have rest, they have to
have more structure. But for the hinters, what's the difference.
Just get up there when it's your turn. Let's try it.
Pull it out of a hat tonight. Kevin, what do
you think of that idea?
Speaker 6 (19:27):
It's one of the most ridiculous takes you've ever had.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
And that's saying something.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
You. Thank you, Kevin, thank you. Kevin's trying to be nice.
Speaker 4 (19:36):
Wait run.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
He's a huge Dodger fan. He remembers when Sorda did it.
What do you think of that idea?
Speaker 8 (19:41):
I think it's a pretty dumb fred Yeah, oh for three, Fred,
oh for three. And if we had, if we took collars,
you'd be over twenty two.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Well, can I just say one thing that we're gonna break?
Why is this such a stupid idea? They get it
in the past, Did it worked? Why is it such
a stupid idea? Why it's not a stupid idea?
Speaker 3 (20:08):
It would be a fun stupid idea. Fred.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
You know, guys have spent all season and you're saying,
let's throw all of our analytics out the window, all
the things that we study with this game out the window,
and let's just play this game like this.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
Willy nilly, Let's just go for it tonight.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Right, No, right, Dino Eagle will be the first base coach,
Chris what word will be the third base coach?
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Now, Otani doesn't come up to the third inning. That's
that's the way you want to play it. That's how
you want to play it. You know, everybody else gets
four bats in a game and he only gets three. Yeah,
but when on yeah you hope, Well that's true. All right,
we don't have to continue it now. But I'm just saying,
(20:53):
and I hear what you guys are suggesting that it's insane.
I actually think for one game it would work. So
do you think the uh, the Lakers got smarter over
the weekend. We'll try to figure it out.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
Hello, Rogan and Rodney listener, did you know AM five

Speaker 2 (21:36):
Yeah we are Kendrick. We're talking about a lot. Let's
go Roddy p Fred Rogan on a Monday. I hope
you had a great weekend. It is a Monday, July
twenty first, flying by Summer who said there was dog
days of Summer, Fred, You know dog days around here,
you know.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
The great thing.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
Yesterday we were thinking of going to the Dodger game, honestly,
and then we thought, nat, jeez, it's gonna be too hot.
You know those Sunday after games one o'clock. Oh yeah,
oh yeah, your face melts off from the sun. It
couldn't have been any nicer yesterday.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
It wasn't that way at all.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
Very cool, a nice Southern California Sunday afternoon. Glad we
didn't go because they lost, because you know what happens
in my house. If you buy tickets and go and
they lose, you know what happens. The day is ruined.
The day, no, Rodney, not to day, not just the day,
(22:31):
you know, how Holly gets when they lose.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Oh yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
You can't stop talking about it, right, I'm like yeah,
I'm like I'm sure you like me too. That'll be
all right again another game tomorrow. They'd be oh way, no, no,
can you believe it?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Now?
Speaker 2 (22:45):
And now this is for Street. Now it's five Street.
I don't understand what's going on with his teeth, on
and on and on. It's still they still got a
lot of games left. Yeah, and they're still in the
first place. Yeah, still first place.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
Okay, so the Lakers came up short with Bradley Beal,
but congratulations, well, Marcus Smart to the team. They got
a little smarter over the weekend the IQ. They got
a smart guy, Marcus Smart. What's interesting. You're not excited
about that, friend?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
He can played defense, Yes, I'm excited, and that a
good thing, better than Bradley Beal because Bradley Beal is
a guy that's gonna take shots and needs the ball.
He needs the ball in his hand, whereas Marcus Smart's
not necessarily going to need the ball in his hand,
but yet he can defend, which is kind of what
they need. So in that respect, you know, Luca and
(23:38):
Lebron handling the ball and doing the bulk of the
score in Austin Reeves. They don't have another guy that
absolutely needs the ball like Bradley Beal would. Yeah, Marcus Smarter,
it's a nice it's a nice pickup. I mean, he's
kind of on the other side, but a nice pickup.
Still played d probably not forty eight minutes a game,
(23:59):
but I'm I mean, he can still play. It's a
good pickup for him. What I find really interesting here
is that. And it was reported Dan Wyke He's gonna
be on the show at one he reported this. The
guy that recruited Marcus Martin said come play here is Luca.
And according to reports, the guy who wanted DeAndre Ayton
(24:19):
was Luca. So Luca is now in a position where
he's kind of that guy the recruiter the Lebron. Now,
I don't know if Lebron's doing it or not too.
I mean, that's not been said, but they are letting Luca,
and it's been reported they're coming to him and saying,
(24:41):
all right, who do you want?
Speaker 3 (24:42):
Go go recruit him.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
And I think that's interesting because there's some and we
talked about this, what's gonna happen if he doesn't re sign.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
Yeah, what's gonna happen? Well, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
It seems like they're letting him have a good amount
of say into what's happening.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Hoping, hoping that he becomes a long time Lakers. Yeah,
we're gonna let you build this team the way you
want to build this team, and we want you out
there recruiting because we want you here long term and
who you want to be here with you, We're gonna
let you have some say in that. Yeah, makes sense,
makes sense, because yeah, it would be.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
To me, it'll be.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
A disaster if he doesn't sign long term the Lakers.
And plus I think it will be a mistake if
he doesn't. Look, he's at one of the all time
brands in sports, right, top two three brands and globally
in sports, and you just got bought by the guys
(25:46):
that run the Dodgers. You don't think they're gonna do
whatever it takes to make the Lakers a championship team
year in and year out. Just look at the track record.
So if you're thinking long term, is there another franchise
that you would want to be a part of than
the Lakers for all of the reasons, and this this
(26:10):
was there was reasons before, you know, Mark Walters and
the Gouggenheim guys bought the team, but that just put
it over the top because you know they're going to
do whatever it takes.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Yeah, and that's why when it first came out, well,
you know, you don't know what he's going to do,
and he may not sign. Where else would you go?
Where else would you go? Where things will appear to
be as bright as they will? Hear now with them
in charge? Oh, I have to tell you if if
(26:41):
they weren't in charge and I'm him, Yeah, Oh, I
don't think they sign. I think I go out and
test the market and see what happens. Why, I mean,
you're in LA. But that is what it was. Now
with these guys and the cash they're going to bring
in here and the changes they're going to make and
increasing the staff, why wouldn't you want to be here?
(27:06):
That would be like in baseball, you have two choices.
You can play for the Dodgers or I'll tell you
who's making a pretty good pitch for him, Kansas City?
Speaker 4 (27:17):
Where are you gonna go? M what happened during.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Free agency this year with the Dodgers. If they wanted you,
they they had you, they got you, and they did
it because and what does everybody say the organization By
the way, we said at the beginning of the year,
there's no guarantee that means they win the World Series,
but they've got a really good chance. And that's all
you can ever hope for Lakers will be the same way.
You will want to come here if you know what
(27:41):
it is. Honestly, you know if the Lakers will become
and granted these guys have not won a title yet.
The Clippers people want to go to the Clippers now,
oh yeah, because of the organization here.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Yeah, yeah, because it's a well run organization. People know
that the word has got out. They got Steve Balmer
who's got deep pockets and he's gonna put it into
the organization. They're gonna do whatever it takes to try
to win and be in the mix year and in
year out. Now, like you mentioned they have, they don't
have the history the Lakers have and they haven't won
a title yet. But you gotta feel with Bomber too,
(28:18):
like like you mentioned, white guys want to go there
is that they're gonna find a way to be in
the mix on a regular basis. They're gonna be in
the mix. And uh, you know obviously Barron barring injuries
and things like that, and the same way now on
a different scale is the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
And I'm sure the Clippers were looking at that sale going,
are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? They bought
the Lakers. They bought the Lakers. Now we got to
deal with that. Yeah, I got deep pockets, but man,
you see what they did with the Dodgers. Now we
got to contend with that across town. Come on, man,
(29:00):
come on, now, it's gonna be a destination again for everybody. Right,
that's what they did.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
The Lakers will succeed in the future because of the
organization and the structure of it. In the past they
succeeded because they were able to sign a big name
or two and surround them. The new Lakers structure will
be sustained success every year.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
One way or the other.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
They'll be right up there battling with Lebron, without, with
Luca or without They'll figure it out. They will build
that system. That's what the new Lakers will look like.
Speaker 4 (29:38):
And to that end. I think it's gonna be interesting
for Lebron this year.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
Rodney.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Here's why.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
First, I think Luke and Lebron, if everybody's up healthy
and ready, they're gonna be tough. I mean, will DeAndre
Ayton be an adult and be healthy.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
He just got to play a little bit for He
didn't have to be great. He didn't have to be
you know, the expectation that they had for him in Phoenix.
He just gotta be somewhat steady for them. And if
he can do that, rim protect run the floor a
little bit, give them a little bit of offense. With luc
and Lebron there and Austin Reeves, they could be dangerous.
(30:16):
They really could. And maybe this is maybe this is
a Luca wanted you. You're now a Laker, this is
a different ballgame, and you play in Phoenix. Maybe there's
a change of sea to rechange your heart with him.
That he's kind of, you know, on the downside, that
he's trying to resurrect his career and hopefully being around
these guys will help and they'll rub off on him.
(30:37):
But just get a little bit from them and they'll
be okay.
Speaker 3 (30:40):
All right.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
So let's say Lakers are okay. Let's say they're okay.
The season begins, they're okay, they're you know, a play
in worst case. Let's just start with that they're okay.
Let's say they're not killing everybody. Let's say they're not
top three in the division, but they're they're okay. They
(31:01):
could be better than that, but for the argument, we'll
just say, no, they're fine. Now you get to the
trade deadline, all right, And let's say at the trade
deadline you look at them and you go, yeah, they'll
make the playoffs, but we don't expect much different conversation.
Speaker 4 (31:16):
Please understand, Rodney.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
If we're saying, oh, they'll make the playoffs and they
got a legit shot to win this, so they're different conversations.
If we think they have a shot to win it,
then this will not apply. Let's say they're okay, you
think Lebron says, at that point we're at the trade deadline,
A number of teams here I believe have a better
(31:40):
shot than the Lakers to win this thing. Guys, why
don't we do something? I want to go win again?
Do you think that could happen? But only if they're like, okay,
not great.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Here's a here's a wrinkle, and I'm throwing to you.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
Give me.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
How much playing time is Brownie getting? Is he up
with the big club? He's having a pretty good summer league.
Is he up with the big guys? Is he playing?
Is he getting any run.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Or is he not? Is he back to the G League?
Speaker 2 (32:24):
And and and not in uniform most of most of
the time.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
He's a reserve that he sits on the bench for
the big club. As a reserve does not get a
lot of run.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
Like the ninth tenth guy, tenth left guy. Okay, if
you put odds on it, I would say seventy five
against him leaving period. I said, I give it only
(32:55):
twenty five percent period. No matter what, even if it's
a bad season or it's a meat yocre season, they're okay.
You know, if he has an opportunity to say join
what join Houston and Houston's rolling right that we get Lebron,
we put it over the top, we go win a
title with him, KD and Finny Smith and what they've
(33:16):
got with the young crowd. I'd give that just a
twenty five percent chance he does that. I think he's
I think he's going to try to ride it out
here till it's all said and done.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
Man, Look who's back the return And we'll talk about
that next.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
We've made it even easier to take LA Sports with

Speaker 2 (34:02):
Oh yeah, my fellow alum, let's go. Today's afternoon Delight
is both of Them by Sweetie. The North Kyle native
and USC alum dropped this track over the weekend as
she gets set to release her forthcoming EP entitled Hell
of Pressure and an ill interview with Billboard, the thirty
two year old said this next project will showcase who
(34:25):
she is as an artist today and how she's evolved
over the time. In the spotlight again, Today's Afternoon Delight
is both of Them by Sweety.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
All Right, so we talked about what you say, said
both of them?
Speaker 3 (34:48):
No, it's okay, I don't know Rodney.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Who's kidding who?
Speaker 3 (34:55):
All right?
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Talked about the Lakers and what they've done. So they
got smarter over the weekend. So you can make the
argument the Clippers got older by signing a pretty smart player.
It's a one year deal. He said, it'll be his
final year. Chris Paul will return to the Clippers, and
I think this is where he's gonna wrap it up Rodney,
He said, this is his final year.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
Do you like this signing?
Speaker 3 (35:18):
Yeah, I actually do. I actually do.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
You know, Chris has always been one of the smartest
guys in the league when it comes to basketball IQ
and on and off the court. I mean, I think
it'll be a good fit for him. I think he's
at a time in his career he doesn't you know,
need to play forty minutes. Obviously, you can't play forty minutes,
doesn't need the ball in his hand all the time,
but he can. He can fill his role. And this
(35:45):
is home for him, you know, this is where he's
got his house and kids live and grow up and
all that kind of stuff. So for him to come
back home to finish it out, I think it's great,
you know, good for him and good for the Clippers.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
And you know, I don't think.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
It's just a you know, so uh, you know, a
signing just to sign him and say Chris Paul is
here to ride off into the sunset. I think he
can give him some help, Kevin.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
If I remember, he did play decent minutes last year.
I don't think he got hurt.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
He played all eighty two games at what thirty nine,
forty years old, whatever he is, that's the most impressive.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
If he played two minutes a game, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
He played in every single solitary game for the Spurs.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
That himself was impressed considering his age.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Absolutely, there's absolutely nothing his history and his age. Yeah,
absolutely nothing wrong with that. I actually like it. They
made the move for Collins. They signed Bradley Beal.
Speaker 8 (36:36):
To not play the name game here, Fred me, they're
not playing the name game here, Fred.
Speaker 4 (36:41):
Chris Paul. Yeah, no, No, the name game is not at.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
This point right in his career. He's not really the name.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
I mean, if they are, it's the lowercase name. No,
it's not uppercase, it's not capitalized.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
No, don't.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
I don't think it's a name game. But think about it,
John Collins. They signed Brook law Pez, they went out
got Bradley Beal, they added Chris Paul. Everybody did what
they did during this NBA free agency period. I think
the Clippers did pretty well. I think they really made
a strike here. I mean, if you look at the
Lakers DeAndre Ayton, h Marcus Smart, La Ravia, they signed
(37:20):
a free agency. The Clippers got Bradley Beal, Chris Paul
and John Collins. Of course they traded for Collins. Nonetheless,
I think Rodney they did pretty well. I think I
think the.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Clippers has always Yeah, but the key was always with
the Clippers. What is what which guy's got to stay healthy?
And how many minutes does he give you and how
many games does he give you? That's Kawhi, right, Zubox
is still at the top of his game. It's just
about Kawhi, it really is. I mean, nobody falls off
(37:53):
a cliff when one player leaves the lineup then more
than the Clippers do. And they are whole different team
with him in it. So it always comes. And since
he's been here, it's come down to that, you know,
how many minutes and when he's he gonna be healthy
and how healthy is he gonna be for you?
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Kawhi Harden, Bradley Beal, Collins, Zubot's look at that team. Yeah,
and if Kauwhi is healthy, but even even if he's
not healthy. Let's say Harden stays healthy. Yeah, Yeah, Hard
and Chris Paul Beal. I like what they've done. Yeah,
they can go small and go big. I mean they
(38:33):
they didn't.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
They did.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
They did a nice job. And I think it'll be
interesting to see how Harden and Beal play off of
each other along with you know, in there with with Kawhi.
You know, Harden struggled that you know at at the end,
but I think he had a pretty good season and
surprised a lot of people last year with his play.
(38:57):
So yeah, they could be good. They really it could
be good. But again it goes back to Kawhi. They
are a contender with Kawhi, they are a play in
without him if he's not healthy enough to sustain throughout
the season.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
So the deal is this, I got the same thing
as last year. Play enough where you're good, play enough
to keep everybody afloat, then cross your fingers and pray
when you hit the playoffs he's ready to go.
Speaker 5 (39:24):
M h.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Yeah, I mean that's basically pretty much it. Yeah, don't
play him too much. Hopefully those guys that you brought
in can win you enough games where you don't need
him and put you in a position that you can
be a and not necessarily a play in but you
can be a fourth, fifth seed, third seed maybe, and
then be him, have him better, be ready to go
(39:48):
in the playoffs, and you got a shot.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
We'll continue our conversation with Dan Waikei, our NBA insider
next
