Speaker 1 (00:00):
Why we continue on Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete a Name,
five seventy LA Sports, the Big Friday Show. But we
look forward to Monday as well because Monday we're heading
down to Downy BJ's Restaurant and brew House. The show
starts at noon. It's noon to three on Monday, and
we are given away.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
We're giving away great stuff.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
We're giving away Dodger tickets, we are giving away football tickets,
give away BJ's Restaurant and brew house, gift cards, lots
of stuff. It's always a fun time at BJ's and Downey.
We invite you to come on down. The show starts
at noon, get there by like eleven forty five. We'll
get there whenever you want. But if you want to
sit in the bar area, have a better chance to win,
(00:42):
be up close where the action is. Get there around then,
because what happens at BJ's is all the bar seats
are gone. Then we've got people sitting in the restaurant
and at one point we had people lined up across
the wall. It was like standing room only. And I
can't remember if he was the place where our speakers
blew up.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Oh yes, that was Downey, it.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Was Downy, right, I forgot that. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
I think we went down there and when Bert tests
the equipment, if you get there early, you know we
have to go through some testing and checks. And Bert,
for whatever reason, turns the equipment up loud enough that
you can hear it on the moon, because he must
think there's going to be twelve million people there. And
I think it was Bert himself who blew up the speaker.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
I don't know if that's true. Let's not put that
on Bert. I think the speakers might have been defective beforehand.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
You think there were defective speakers potentially. Yes, I'm blaming Burt.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Wow, b under the bus. What Burt do to you? Fred?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
You want to know what Bert did to me? Rodney?
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I think Rodney will agree. Bert eats every bit of
food before we can even eat. So it happened, Fred
that he eats your steak by mistake.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
There's no mistake. I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
If you're sitting at the table with Bert when he
orders and let's say this from fries in the middle
of the table for people to share. I put my
hand in the middle of the table one time and
he bit it.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Stop it, stop it, stop it. Fred.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
That's that's an exaggeration. He just bited your fingernail. Thank
you you were there, you saw, Yes he did.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
All right.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Now let's get to the NFL bringing our friend Vinnie
Bond senior Benn.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
He spent some time at BJ's.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Well this didn't give any Yes he did.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
I did. My question is did did you dip your
finger and catch it first?
Speaker 1 (02:42):
That was scary, Vinnie. Just when he went from my finger,
I just pulled back on everything.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
That guy, Yeah, hey, yeah, no, yah, Bert, Burkenny, let's
just put it that way, Burkeny. But all of those
who know Craig was with us last time on there
in Irvine. But yeah, Bert, if he's with us, yeah, Bert,
will Craig cricket eat a little bit too? Nobody talks
about Craig eating. Craig had a whole plate, of the
(03:10):
whole play of spaghetti that he was complaining that he.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Had to work.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
He couldn't finish his he couldn't finish his spaghetti was
getting cold.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
He was me, that's true, that's true.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
And when you work with Craig and Van, I don't
know if you work with Craig. Craig has a fascination
for rats. And Craig will tell you stories about rats.
Speaker 7 (03:43):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
So if Bert's there, you have to guard your food
with your life. And if Craig's there, he will regale
you with tales of rats.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Hours. Yeah, there's a fascination with rat kill.
Speaker 6 (03:58):
Your appetite, man, tell you what?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
And that's what has he not a pest control man.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Get into engineering and tech every that's not in the
pest control business.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
All right. Nonetheless, we're wasting time.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Vinnie, listen, before we get into the local teams. Would
you think last night, I think, I mean, I was
impressed with the Packers and I wrote it off as
maybe week one against the Lions playing at home. They're
fired up, Michael Parson's trade, everybody's excited, they're they're you know,
(04:36):
Lambeau opening Day. It's a it's a big deal. It's
hard to win up there on opening day at Lambeau.
It's just a tall task. And I don't I don't
fault the Lions either. I think the Lion's still going
to be pretty good. But now week two, the Commanders
come in town and they I mean, it's what twenty
eight seventeen twenty eight, whatever the score was, But they
(04:58):
dominated the Commanders. They dominated them and it wasn't even close.
I mean, they should have won that game going away easily,
but the scored really didn't indicate how close or how
big a win that was for green Bay.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
What do you make of green Bay right now?
Speaker 6 (05:13):
Extremely bullsh on the green Bay Packers, you know, and
they have they have a way, that organization of striking
at the right time. They don't normally dabble in free agency,
but they do when they need to, or a big
trade as they did with the Dallas Cowboys to bring
in you know, the Charles Woodson and the great defensive
tackle that they brought in back in the day. Both
(05:34):
of those moves helpfulate you know White exactly and now
Michael Parsons and you just wonder if they got their
new Reggie White and Charles Woodson defensive difference maker that's
going to get them over the over the hump. So
good on the green Bay Packers for reading the room
correctly and understanding that they've got a great young quarterback,
a good running back in Josh Jacob, some weapons now,
(05:57):
you know, alongside both of those players, and they needed
a difference Baker defensively, they went out and got him,
and so far, so good with that. And you know,
then you have to look at the Washington Commanders. It
was kind of an uninspired performance by them. I felt
like the Green Bay Packers if you if you looking
between the lines on what they did, they didn't blitz
Jaden Daniels, which is the right thing to do. He's
(06:20):
he's really good against the blitz. That's what he That's
how he tore up the Lions in the in the
NFL Championship. Excuseay. The had the playoffs last year, so
they they basically just rushed four players, dropped back everyone
else in coverage and didn't let him run. You know,
I didn't let him get out of the pocket and
make good plays with the legs or his arms. He's
(06:41):
just really good under pressure. So I wonder if that's
a blueprint that other teams are going to try to formulate.
But when you're asking specifically about the Green Bay Packers,
I think they're going to be a major problem for
a lot of teams this year.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Yeah, and you know some going into the year. I
just love Jayden Daniels, love them.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yeah, And what I learned watching last night, you just
can't do it by yourself. I don't care how good Joe,
you just can't do it by yourself. You know, I
think any good team you put him on, he's going
to be great. And I think he's so talented.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
Vinnie, I completely agree. And but you know, football is
not a one man sport. It's never has been. It's
the ultimate me It's the ultimate team sport in all
in all of sports. And we've seen really good quarterbacks
be let down by you know, not so good supporting casts.
I'm not saying that about the Commanders because I think
they're going to get it together. The Raiders, you know,
(07:34):
play them, They got their their their own game. You know,
it gets the Chargers to deal with. But but not
long after they got to go to Washington to play
the Commanders. So uh, you know, I would advise the
Raiders not to read too much into what they saw
yesterday with the Commanders a figure that they're going to
read group here pretty quick. But if you're not getting
that supporting cast, if you don't have that supporting cast,
(07:57):
I don't care how good of a quarterback you are,
You're only to be able to take that team so far.
So it'll be It'll be interesting to keep track of
the Commanders to see if that was a one off,
if they just had a bad night on a short week,
having a travel they were the traveling team obviously on
the short week, or if that's a little bit of
a sign of things to come, and maybe there's a
(08:17):
little bit of a sophomore slumb, not necessarily for dam
but for the team itself.
Speaker 5 (08:22):
Yeah, all right, let's let's start with the local teams.
Rams look good Week one against the Texans. Texans. I
think are are are a really good team. I know
the Rams won and people look at the Texans in
a different way, but I think the Texans are are
going to be a formidable opponent. I know they got
the Bucks. Texans got the Bucks this week, but the
Rams look good and Stafford looked good. Vinny, your outlook
(08:44):
going forward now? Week two with the Rams, how do
you feel about them?
Speaker 6 (08:48):
Yeah, we talked about that earlier this week. I think
they're a Super Bowl contending team. This is, you know,
one of those one of those games this week against
the Titans where you know it's easy and overlooking opponent
like this, but you don't want to stumble in this
kind of a game, a winnable game, go take care
of business, which I expect them to do. Uh, the
(09:08):
Titans are going to have something to say about that.
They played pretty well, to be honest with you, in
their season opener, even though they didn't, you know, come
up with the win. It was a it was a
tough opponent that they're playing with the against the Denver Broncos,
and they did pretty well against them, to be honest
with you. And if they clean up some mistakes and
some drop passes, you know, they could be they could
be a little bit of an issue. So rams need
(09:29):
to get in there, jump on them early, and take
care of business because there's there's bigger opponents down the
road that they're going to have to deal with. This
is a game where you just have to take care
of business, regardless of the opponent and how you perceive them.
Talent level is because everybody in this league is pretty
good and if you don't come correct, you will get
your hat handed to you.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
All right.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
So now let's switch over to your big game, your
big game of the weekend, and it just happens to
be against the Chargers Raiders.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Chargers. We'll start with this Jim high and Pete Carroll
will like each other, do they?
Speaker 6 (10:03):
Actually they do. And it got reported miss correctly incorrectly
yesterday that that that Pete you know, was was a
little bit chilly in his response to Jim harp But
I was standing two feet away from Pete Carroll. He
was clearly joking around when he said he didn't have
any fun memories of Jim Harbott. So there's a lot
(10:23):
of respect there. But there's also a lot of history
and there's a lot of you know the thing about
those two and I did a story that's gonna run
on Sunday. It's not just that they were coaching rivals, obviously,
it's that's their teams played for a lot of important
in a lot of important games, whether it was to
go to the Rose Bowl Conference championships in the Big Twelve,
in the Pac twelve, you know, big division games, to
(10:44):
win division titles when they were at San Francisco in Seattle. Heck,
Pete Carroll in his one Super Bowl win, had to
beat the forty nine ers in the NFC Championship game
to get there. So and Harbo obviously was the coach.
So it's not just that it's had some beef and
some you know, some rough waters over the years.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Sorry receiver like cram Tree, go beat me? Are you kidding?
Speaker 6 (11:08):
Richard Sherman, who by the way, was on was on
the Stanford team that beat uh that beat USC in
the infamous What's Your Deal game? So uh So there's
a lot of history between these two coaches, but it
also is tied into the fact that they both coast
some really good teams in some really important games. And
you would expect now and that's this is make no mistake,
(11:30):
It's a huge game when you think about it. I
think it's one of the bigger games that've ever been
at Allegiance Stadium for the Raiders. They have a chance
to go to and oh take you know, the first
place early on with by all that by themselves, with
the in the AFC West, send the message to the Chargers,
to themselves, to everybody else, and then the fans, fans
are geeked out. It's supposed to be eighty six percent
Raider fans at the Allegiance Stadium on money. It's the
(11:52):
chance to for for the fan base to kind of
really get behind them and and show what Allegian Stadium
could be for opposing teams. So for a lot of reasons,
this is a very big game. And on top of that,
you got the renewal of Jim Harbin and Carol.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Doesn't get any better, No, it doesn't, It really doesn't.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
And you know we said it last you know, last
time we talked Vinny that this is the best division
in the NFL. And now we're gonna get these matchups
on a regular basis, whether it be this weekend with
the Chargers traveling to Vegas to play the Raiders, or
Kansas City coming to play the Raiders, or Raiders going
to play Kansas City. All of those games. Broncos are
(12:31):
are going to be a good team. It's going to
be an exciting division to watch this year. And I
think everybody's going to have their eyes on this division
because look, we saw it in Brazil. Kansas City is vulnerable.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
They did well.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
It could be zero to two after this weekend because
they play the Eagles, so they're definitely vulnerable. And this
is an opportunity for both the Chargers and the Raiders
to kind of get going and step it up. And
to me, right now, it's it's anybody's division, but it's
the most exciting division in football.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
Yeah, and we're working on word on whether Brock Powers
is going to be able to play or not. He
banged up his knee a little bit in the in
the Patriots game, he makes a big difference. But I
really believe Rodney and Fred this is a this is
a great opportunity, not that Gino would ever talk about it,
but you know, I'll talk about it. You know, this
is an opportunity for Gino Smith to kind of reaffirm
(13:27):
and to show people nationally that he's free turn good quarterback.
And I've been thoroughly impressed with Gino Smith covering him
now for the you know whatever six months or something
that has been at seeing him in training camp and
seeing him Sunday against the against the Patriots. He's a
really good quarterback and a guy that completes year and
a year out seventy percent of his passes, which is
what he did in the in the in the opener
(13:50):
against the Patriots. I do wonder if he's able to
go and out duel Justin Herbert on Monday and people
are watching because it is Monday Night football, what the
what the perception of him is going to be around
football around the nation, because I still think that people
are sleeping on how that Gino Smith actually is.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Well.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Couple of things.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
First, Gino Smith confirms if you've got a good quarterback
aka Raiders, you're gonna be all right, You're going to
be in it. Problem is the Raiders haven't had a quarterback. Now,
let's talk about Geno Smith. When he came out. There
was a sense that he didn't fulfill that promise. Of course,
he was playing on a bad team.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
It's a Jets. He was playing on a bad team.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
He gets to Seattle, all of a sudden, he looks
pretty fundamentally sound and they're winning. I don't know, Vinny,
you watch him. I don't know if he is a
spectacular quarterback. I think he is an exceptionally solid quarterback
where if he gets a break or things go their
way and they play well, he could take them deep.
(14:56):
I don't think he's a superstar quarterback, but I think
he's just a tad bit below.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Does that make.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
Sense, Yeah, yeah, it absolutely does. But here's the one
thing that had blown the away about Geno Smith. And
I've talked to Roddy about this, and and you as well, Fred.
You know on the air. When you look at seventy
percent completion percentage, you automatically think that he's just dinking
and dunking and you know, throwing the checkovs. He doesn't
(15:24):
do that. There were twenty There were nine plays that
it was a team tied per team record, nine plays
of twenty yards or more in the air. He has
no problem throwing the ball down the field and driving
the ball down the field. It's kind of who he
is and it's in his body. He's a very aggressive quarterback.
So I'm with you. He's not a superstar. I'm not
(15:46):
saying I'm not saying that. But he's also not some
game manager that that throws high percentage us. He's just
really good throwing balls, whether they're short or long, medium,
wherever throwing it, you know, to allow players to go
make plays. There there were plays where where he was
hitting guys right and stride and they went and took
care of the rest. So that's the thing about that,
(16:06):
you know, I was assuming, yeah, game manager, seventy completion percenter,
she's just throwing high percentage throws. No, he challenges people downfield,
and I think that's that's the version of Geno that
I hope, you know, emerges on Monday night on Monday
Night Football, and then he makes some of the big
plays that he's made in training camp and made on
you know, Sunday in the season opener, because I think
(16:28):
that's the eye opener for me.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Yeah, And I hate that term. I absolutely hated with
a passion game manager. Every quarterback in the league. I
don't care if it's Joe Montanum, Dan Marino, whomever it is,
Jim Kelly and Patrick Mahomes to Tom Brady, to whomever
it is. Every quarterback is a game manager and and
(16:52):
and the good ones managed the game based on what
the game requires. And so if it means I gotta
protect the football because our defense is dominating, then I'm
gonna protect the football. I'm not gonna take chances. If
I gotta air it out and we got to throw
it fifty times, then I'm gonna do that. But the
(17:13):
term game manager, but that is the job. That is
the job of a quarterback, and it's it's used as
a kind of a negative connotation, and it absolutely drives
me crazy because every quarterback you talk to, if you
talk to every single quarterback in the league or ever
play the position that is like, oh yeah, absolutely, I'm
(17:36):
a game manager. I manage the game how based on
how the game is going and based on what we.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Are prepared to do versus a particular opponent.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
I completely agree. And a perfect example of that was
number one. There are two examples. Number one, they weren't
doing anything with the run game master Gend. The other
the Patriots did the job on Ashon Gent. So what
do you need? You need your quarterback to now manage
a game where you're not able to run the ball.
And oh, by the way, Gino Smith grows for three
hundred and sixty two yards right in at a very
(18:10):
micro level. He needed he had to otherwise they don't win, right,
So he managed that situation. And here's on a micro level.
It's third and twenty and the Racers are up by
ten points. There's about four minutes up. They're deep in
their own territory, right, So third and twenty you're thinking,
all right, they're going to either hand the ball up
or you're gonna throw a screen pass, try to give
(18:30):
the punter a little bit of extra yards to punt it,
and go play defense. It's a zero coverage look, by
the by the Patriots. He reads that at the line
of scribadge and realizes, all right, there's an opportunity to
make a big play here rather than just a dump
down or something, to give my punter a little bit
more room. And what did he do? He aggressively throws
the ball down the field to Dante Thornton, taking advantage
(18:51):
of what the Patriots asked, basically what they were doing
for him to manage that situation. What did he manage
it to, I'm gonna throw the ball along a thirty
yard to Dante Thorton to basically put the game away,
to convert a first down on a third and twenty. That's,
to me, managing a game at the line of scrimmage,
understanding what the defense is doing, and then managing your
(19:12):
team and putting them in the best possible play based
on what you're seeing. So that's the epitome of a
game manager, which there's nothing negative about that, right, run
the game and managing the game from the line of
scrimmage and then going and executing it as well.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Well.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
Benny, thank you for managing our game today. Greatly appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (19:30):
All right, I have a great weekend. Enjoy your games.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
You too, Minnie, do not bring up robot umpires to
Walker Bueller.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
I'm just warning you.
Speaker 7 (19:45):
Make AM five seventy LA Sports a preset before you
plug in your foote presets and the iHeartRadio app now
available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Just another easy
way to listen to LA's best sports talk.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
Oh yes, keep it moving on a Friday, a beautiful
Friday here in southern California. Rodney Pete, fred Rogan, Come on, Freddy,
you're talking about something something. Don't piss nobody off, especially
a guy named Bueler.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Don't do it.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
He doesn't take kindly to it. So you know what
happened to him in Boston. You know how he struggled.
You know, one point he said to the media, I'm
an f an embarrassment.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
That's why we love him.
Speaker 1 (20:33):
We love him because of his honesty, we love him
because of his competitive fire. Anyway, it was so bad
the Red Sox.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Let him go.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
Phillies pick him up. You wanted him to be signed
with the Dodgers. You said, the Dodger go get him,
go get him, that's what you said.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
I did.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Yeah, well somebody else got him. Philly's got him, and
I don't think he would have been a good fit
for the Dodgers. Could be wrong anyway, Phillies get him.
They sent him a triple A. Get him a little
because they're calling him up tonight and that means he's
eligible to be in the playoff roster. Now, we'll see
what he does against Kansas City tonight as he returns
to the majors.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
He's in the miners.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
He was at Lehigh Valley Tripleoly and that's where they
use the automated strike zone. They use the computer call
balls and strikes, and Bueller likes the idea. Says something
needs to be done, but this is not what it is.
Now if anybody he should think something needs to be done,
(21:32):
given earlier in the year he challenged the umpire and
got thrown out of the game. Of course, he threw
it right down the middle. The guy called it a ball,
So he knows something has to be done. He says,
this isn't it. He says it's inaccurate. It's not actually
on the plate in most stadiums.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
He said.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
He thinks it shifts certain directions in certain ballparks.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Then he goes on strike zone done. That's what he's
saying he's saying it shifts.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
And here's the other thing he said, which I'm sorry
I can't sign off on. I think the human element
is a huge part of the game. I think starting
pitchers that have pitched for a long time deserves certain
parts of the plate that other guys don't get wrong.
Wrong maybe ten years ago, maybe twenty years ago, maybe
(22:22):
five years ago, but that's not the way it works anymore. Hey,
I deserve that corner, or I deserve a little cushion
on the outside corner. This guy's not going to get it.
He doesn't deserve it now. It doesn't work that way anymore.
That's a big frustration I think for everybody, if you're
a player, especially if you're a pitcher, if you always
(22:43):
get that low outside pitch, you always got it cause
its borderline. Automated strike zone may not give it to you,
so you can't have to change away you pitch. You're
gonna to start over the plate right, or you're gonna
find different places around the plate to put it. I
think that is a frustration he had it. I think
the punishment of challenging something that's clearly a strike is
(23:04):
not big enough. I could kind of go on. I
think the ABS system in general is a very good idea.
I don't think we have any idea where to put
it on the plate. I don't think we have any
idea how to function it correctly in terms of angles
at ballparks. I don't think the umpire's union are going
to be very happy about it. Well, they're gonna have
nothing to say about it.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
That's just the way that's going to go. The umpire
Union's not gonna have anything saying.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
If baseball wants to use it, they're gonna use it.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
But the umpires go on strike, Okay, go like they did,
Like they did one one time before, and they did
it in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Which was a disaster. The NFL was a complete disaster.
Remember that, that was a complete disaster. My god, the
b it was so horrible, so horrible. I mean, back
in I'm trying to remember what year, maybe how old
am I nineteen seventy nine, I think the Empires were
on strike and I was working at k T A r R.
(24:03):
Now k TV you got a call to go umpire.
Oh here's what happened. I was I was doing the
five o'clock show, and things are very different back then. Today,
this will never happen. So we go out there and, uh,
you know, they're just using local umpires for spring training.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
I said, I got an idea. I'm gonna go out
and work the bases. I'll work the bases. You just
decided on your own, you're going to go work the basis.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
Yes, that you guys, mind, you called somebody, not I
didn't call anybody. I went out there and said, hey,
you guys, mind if I worked the bases, I'll do
a story on it.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Were they an umpire short? I mean, you just go
out there and work the basis.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
They were only working two umpires spring training, right, I
saw go out there work the bases with you guys.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
You know what? They said? Sure?
Speaker 1 (24:50):
I think they asked the managers. It was the Cubs
in the A's Cubs and A's I'll never forget it,
and they said sure. So I went out there and
I'm now working second base. I'm now working second base right,
and a couple of things. It's the famous Ray Burris story,
right handed pitcher for the Cubs trying to make the team.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
He was a veteran.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
So now I'm out there, I can hear everything. Stuff
you can't hear, but I'm out there. He throws it,
guy calls it a ball, He cuts it back, he
turns his back, he walks back toward the mound, and
he is just.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Mfing himself, just pissed because.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
He knows he's not he's not the umpire no himself.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
He is pissed. Every pitch meant something. Every pitch was
the difference between a veteran was going to make the
club or not. All right, So I'm observing this and
now Oakland's got to run around. First, here's the pitch.
Guy takes off for a second. We got to steal Rodney.
(25:58):
We had to steal I'm gonna get to make a call. Yeah,
here's the thing. First thing is you learn when you're
going to make a call second base on a steel
watch the ball and then turn and follow it so
it doesn't hit you in the head. They teach you
that you don't want to just turn your back you
get plunked. So anyway, I'm so excited to be out there.
(26:20):
Obviously I shouldn't be out there, but I'm excited to
be out there. And here comes to throw. So I
get in there and I turned my head and I
didn't get hit. But if you have any question about
how fast these guys throw the ball, if you've ever
wondered and looked that fast to me, well, let me
(26:40):
tell you something. When you're out there. I heard this
right by my ear. I heard that, and it kind
of startled me. If that ball hit me in the head,
I'd have been dead. That's how hard he threw it.
By the way, the runner was safe.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
In case you went no.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Later in the game, it's safe. I gave him the safe,
so you gave him a big safe call. I gave
him a safe. Oh I did later. Dave Kingman is
playing left field, remember Dave Kingman.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Yes, yes, big ass Dave Kingman.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Yes, he couldn't play a lot of d But he's
out and the left uh cubbs at the play. Little
pop up to left field. Short stop's not going to
get there. But you know who's coming, Big Dave.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
MM.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
Big Dave's on the run. Big Dave extends himself, leaves
his feet to make the play. It's close. There's no replay.
I said he trapped the ball, said he trapped it.
That's right.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Game the safe.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
True, gave the safe safe call. Did what did King,
min say, Okay, he didn't. I just turned my back.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
And then the best part of it was the best
part of it was because I had to do the
five o'clock news and the game was running long.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
I just left in the seventh inning. You just left
the field. I just left the field.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Oh my god, I was King And would a got
in your face? If it was regular season, he probably
would have. But preseason training camp or a spring training no,
but man, I would have loved to see if he
got in your face about that catch.
Speaker 7 (28:37):

beautiful Friday. Let's talk about it.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Fred, all right, quickly here, we've got to get to
David Vase in San Francisco coming up in a bit,
but a reminder to everybody will be BJ's Restaurant in
brew House on Monday in Downy. The show is new
to three. We invite everybody down. We'll give it away
Dodger tickets, We'll give away Charger tickets. I'm sure we're
giving away Bjay's gift cards and Kevin. I've got an idea.
I wanted to run by you. All right, listen to
(29:47):
this to start the show on Monday, because you know,
we want a good number of people there. I think
we start the show by giving something away, and I
think we do it like this, like the opening kickoff.
We'll come up with a question we'll ask the audience
and whoever yells out the answer. First one's the BJ
skift card, just to start the show. What about that idea?
Speaker 3 (30:09):
You mean, like a trivia question or so I have
to come up with this question.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Yeah, no, I'm not doing it. You do it. If
you come up with it, then we'll do it. What
do you think of that idea? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (30:22):
You know what is different? I can roll with it?
Why not?
Speaker 5 (30:26):
See there pick a number between one and twenty and
somebody picks it and they win.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
It, Fred, Now, what's that game that you was it
that you did? Jack or Josh create this game? What's
the game that you guys create?
Speaker 1 (30:36):
Mild?
Speaker 3 (30:37):
I'm thinking of a number?
Speaker 2 (30:37):
Yeah, that one? What is it?
Speaker 5 (30:38):
Right?
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Here's mine meld?
Speaker 2 (30:39):
You know what? I'll play it with whoever? You want
to play? Ronnie? You want to play mind meld?
Speaker 5 (30:44):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (30:45):
Not really?
Speaker 1 (30:45):
FREDA play it, Ronnie, Ronnie, play mind meld with me?
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Humor him, Ronnie? Humor? Are you gonna playing? Kevin will
do it?
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Yeah, I'll play?
Speaker 2 (30:52):
What's up?
Speaker 3 (30:52):
Go ahead?
Speaker 2 (30:53):
All right, here we go.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Now you gotta really get in tune with me, all right.
You gotta focus. Don't give me the answer. Think of
a number. It's called mind meld. Think of a number
between one and ten. Okay, go ahead, done, you got it?
Speaker 2 (31:11):
Yep? What is the number?
Speaker 3 (31:13):
You want me to tell you?
Speaker 5 (31:14):
So?
Speaker 3 (31:14):
You said don't tell me? Now you want me to
tell you?
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (31:16):
I wanted you to think about it, okay, because you
have to connect with me mentally.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
What is the number?
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Interest? I don't know if I want to do that.
The number is eight.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
The number was six? You lose?
Speaker 1 (31:27):
I lose, yes, because the number was six. Okay, that's
how you play mind meld. You have to connect with
me mentally and give me the number. I'm thinking saying
the number was six. Yes, you're just saying number six
because Kevin said eight. If Kevin said six, you would
have said eight. No, if Kevin had said six, it
(31:48):
would have been a mind meld. I used to play
that game with the kids all the time.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Yes, thank you.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
I think a way to keep this game on the
up and up.
Speaker 4 (31:58):
And if we're going to do this line next week
at BJ's, the person has to write the number on
a sheet of paper. You're right, yours. Both parties have
to write down the number. That's the fair way to
do it.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
Nobody trust you, Fred, Well.
Speaker 4 (32:12):
Just so nothing is left and not necessarily that we
don't trust Fred, although sometimes we may not. Yelling for
full transparency. That was Ronnie for full transparency.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
Who did you think? All right, listen, maybe that's how
we handle it.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
Okay, we could do that. We could play mind meld,
or you could come up with a trivia question.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Okay, one of those two options. We'll kick off the
show that way on Monday.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Right, So BJ's Restaurant brew House downy noon to three Monday.
The minute we come on the air, somebody's gonna win,
all right when we come back off to San Francisco
and David Vasse.
Speaker 7 (32:54):
