Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh yes, we keep moving it along on a Friday,
we don't care Friday. Adam Austlin in for Fred Rogan,
been really good. Thank you all for your calls and
your thoughts and your passion on the Dodgers in Clayton
Kershaw and who's the greatest Dodger of all time. That's
a tough debate that will go on forever. As as
one caller said, I can't do it without talking about
(00:21):
it in eras. We got to think about the era
in which a guy plays, which when it comes to
stats and goats and all that kind of stuff, you
got to factor that in.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I think you really do.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
And there's certain guys that can play that you look
up and go, he could play in any era. It
doesn't matter what era he plays in, he still would
be be dominant. And that's a handful of guys. Maybe, Adam,
maybe we create an award show in a show or
some kind of show that says era doesn't matter, and
(00:52):
we picked the guys from different sports that would dominate
in any era that they played. Can you think of
one on top of your head?
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Player?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yea.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Honestly, I think Kershaw is a perfect example now because
We've seen him dominate with his best stuff early on
his first nine years. Then we've seen him dominate while
running on fumes and coming back from injury all the time.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
He can do it any way you want.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
He has the precision he used to have, the power
he lost that became a guy who would paint on
the corners. Still has the curveball, rarely used the slider,
I think as much as he used to. But I
think Clayton Kershaw transcends. I don't think he'd have an issue.
The best lefty curveball since Sandy Kofax. If he was
(01:40):
playing in the sixties or seventies or eighties, or even
in the steroid era in the nineties, his stuff was
unhittable at his best, There's no problem there. I mean
certain guys in today's game. Otani, the guy can go
outside the strike zone and hit anything. He has the power,
he has the contact, and he's throwing one oh two
(02:03):
on the mound by the way, coming back from what
his second Tommy John surgery. Yeah, there's no error that
could hold him. There's nobody that could stop him. We
got great examples just with the Dodgers on guys.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Like this, what about basketball wise? Real quick, uh, Kareem, Kareem.
I think, okay, Magic, maybe the Magic didn't shoot, didn't
shoot and the gay today's game, you gotta shoot, at
least you gotta shoot threes.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Magic's an interesting case, but.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
It could be he could dominate just because of its
size and what he could do with the basketball and handles.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
I think a lot of times when I look at
a guy and I decide how great he is Rodney,
I look at where he was when he wasn't at
his best, and how much could he affect the game
still then? And even when Magic came back and what
was a ninety five ninety six season before they drafted
Kobe Summer in ninety six. Yeah, and he came back
and he had that move he put on the trail
(03:02):
spree Will with the ball Fate going to the basket,
and he had a dominant game I think against the
Rockets and the playoffs, and he had gained like forty
pounds and was playing power forward at that time, and
he still could dominate and impact the game so much,
even though you could say he was a shell of
himself in so many ways, being gone from the game
for four years or whatever it was, and he still
(03:24):
is just that good because he thinks steps ahead. Guys
like that Larry Bird after the back injury, he wasn't
the same player, but he still knew how to dominate
out there on the court.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Guys like that.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
To me, I feel I could make it work in
any era, because we even saw it when they were
battered and bruised from injuries and not able to move
like they used to.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
They still could be that good out there.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
MJ.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
With the Wizards, you know, that was almost a different
era he was playing in in some ways in the
early two thousands, and he still could get twenty per game.
He still had forty five point games at the age
of forty while he was dragging along, you know, a
bum knee in one of his legs.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Yeah, people forget about his stats during that those Wizard days, right,
they were They were actually pretty good.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, I think he actually, I used to say his
Wizards years in some ways enhanced his greatness to me,
because he was able to do it at thirty nine,
at forty and so you know, if you had prime
MJ and you dropped him into that era in the
early two thousands, he still get it done. I think
Lebron takes a lot of flak and people say, oh,
(04:34):
he wouldn't last in the nineties or the eighties because
it was so much more physical. It's like, guys, Lebron
is moving around like Carl. He has a body like
Karl Malone, but he's moving like a guard like Bill Lambier,
weighed less than him. Like, how are these guys in
that time?
Speaker 1 (04:51):
That's the argument that kills me the most about Lebron,
And everybody has their own opinion, but that because the
game was physical in the eighties and nineties, that today's players,
including Lebron, could not handle that when he is just
what you said, He's six' nine built Like Karl malone could,
play you, know defensive end in THE, Nfl and what
(05:13):
makes you think he can't play physical if he needed
to be and that was the game in which he
was playing At.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
It's laughable to me That Muggsy, bogues Spud, Web Mookie
blaylock and these small guys could have fifteen YEAR, nba
fifteen seasons in THE, nba and we're saying the most
physical specimen of all time wouldn't be able to make
it in that.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Era that's.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Absurd if those guys can make it at their, SIZE
i Think Lebron james with his size in speed would be.
Unstoppable and guys Like Steph, curry if you drop him
in to the eighties with his three point, shooting they
are calling him a. Witch they are going to try
to burn him at the state absolutely because you're sure
(06:00):
with the way he's able.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
To to body him. Up but it still won't. Matter
they will, Say, okay we got to be physical on this.
Guy we got to bump, him we gotta do we
put The jordan rules on. Him, Right we're gonna be
physical With Steph. Kirk but how he's playing outside on the,
perimeter how are you going to be. Fit he's not
playing in the paint, right He's you don't have to bang.
Him you don't have to Put rodman on. Him you
can't Put rodman on him because he goes right by.
(06:22):
Him so how would you how do you think that
he wouldn't be?
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Successful the whole idea of, well hand checking will stop,
him like, guys hand checking didn't STOP. Mj and by the,
WAY i got video OF mj in ninety five in
a playoff game and they're calling hand checking left and.
Right when he's taken on The Charlotte hornets in a playoff,
game you think they'd let them get away with more
physicality out. There that doesn't mean anything like the guys the,
(06:50):
shooting the skill, level And steph recently spoke to, this,
saying we're playing in the most skilled era. Here the
ball handling has has taken leafs and of incremental growth
over the. Years it's just a very different. Game if
you want to, say, well they couldn't get away with
carrying as, much then it's, LIKE i don't KNOW mj,
(07:10):
Carried ai carried when he came in in ninety. SIX
i do think the best of the best could dominate
in any era and could translate to any. Era somebody
Like Kareem well back to the basket player like. That
oh we see some of that With. Jokic now he
could step out and shoot three. Pointers what happens with
(07:30):
somebody Like Ralph sampson if you put him in today's,
game he claims he could shoot back Then now he
only took like fifty threes total in his.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Career but you look at.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Some of the formers like says he made the shot
against The lakers that he's a.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Shooter, WELL i think there's One laker fans want to forget,
that but because people have compared him To wemby a
little bit with his athleticism at that, height and he's
SAYING i could have shot, more but that wasn't in
vogue back, then SO i wasn't given a chance.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
To so it kind of goes both.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Ways there are some back then THAT i think would
thrive more in today's, era where some of their skills
would be accentuated because of where the game is. Going
But i'll say, this the reason the game is more
positionless is because you have to have less flaws to
stay on the. Court now teams will match, up, hunt
(08:19):
and pick at your flaws more than. Ever so the
specialists to some degree have been weeded out of the.
Game if you'll only do one, thing it's hard to
get court time in today's, game which means you got
to do a little bit of everything pretty. Well so,
THEREFORE i think the game has never been better in many.
WAYS i know a lot of people would push, back
(08:40):
But i've gone back and watched full games and not
just highlights from the nineties and the. Eighties it doesn't
always hold up to your nostalgia going on upstairs in your, brain.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Like it never.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Does it never. Does all, right let's get into The.
Chargers chargers start three and zero with three division. Wins
my Man isaac Loehen kron is going to join us
talk deeply into The, chargers and there, too and old
start the resurgence Justin Herbert and are they for? Real
(09:16):
am five SEVENTY La. Sports oh, yes welcome back to
we Don't Care. Friday it is A, Friday Adam auslin
and For Fred, rogan AND i think it's a great,
START i really, do for not only college football in
particular professional football in THE, nfl and a really really
(09:41):
good start for our OWN La. Chargers so let's bring
a man that's got his ear to the. Street he's
got his he's got the pulse of the. Bolts he
knows what's going. On our, Man isaac loeh And. Kron,
isaac talk to, Me.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
Rodney my delight in speaking with Healing adam is so
high it cannot be quantified. Numerically, whoa.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
Whoa that's a little, strong but we'll take.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
It that is, intellectually uh stimulating for.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Me, ISAAC i appreciate that it could.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
Be it could. Be it could be all downhill from, here,
though so perhaps that might be the. Peak i'm.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
DISCRYED i feel like the next gen stats can probably
quantify it somehow with all THE.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Nfl, yeah they quantify everything. Else why? Not all, Right? Isaac?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Two and, oho your your assessment of The bolts on
the first two. GAMES i think impressive going To brazil
beating The, chiefs then going To vegas beating The.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Raiders is it what you?
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Expected is this what we are going to see from
This chargers? Team because they look like they are the real,
Deal and AND i Know Kansas city is zero and
two and everybody's talking about, them and and can they
repeat or can they get the title back or? Whatever
somebody's finally going to knock them off the. Hill but right,
now if you look at, it The chargers are the
(11:06):
best team in THE Afc.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
WEST i feel that way, Too, rodney AND i expected
their defense to be terrific right out of the, shoot
BUT i didn't expect their defense to be as good
as it's been to the first two games of the,
season particularly the play of some newcomers to their. Lineup
including a rookie defensive lineman Named Jamary, caldwell who under the,
(11:32):
radar had a fantastic game against The raiders On Monday Night.
Football among other, things they're number one in THE nfl
in red zone. Defense opponents are zero for five against
them in goal to go. Situations, OFFENSIVELY i actually think
they're farther along than they would. BE i, mean we
Knew Justin herbert was going to be, spectacular but we
(11:53):
didn't know collectively what they would be in terms of
the passing game because they have two outstanding slot receivers
In Keenan allen And lad, mcconkee but the receiving on
the outside was kind of, unknown And Quentin johnston has
really established himself as their number one outside receiver with
three touchdown receptions in the first two. Games he's averaging
(12:14):
nineteen yards a. RECEPTION i think the only thing That's
laghman right now is the running. GAME i, mean they're
twenty eighth in THE nfl in rushing in yards per,
carrie which is actually behind where they were last year
when they were. Twentieth all in all, this you guys,
know it's really really. Rare in, FACT i can't remember
any other instance of THE nfl scheduling any team that
(12:39):
has three divisional games right out of the. Shoot so
that was an enormous challenge for The. Chargers and if
they're able to sweep their first three divisional opponents in
the first three weeks of the, season if they beat
The broncos This, sunday that'll be an enormous. Statement it'll
also be it would also be the first time they've
(13:00):
opened a season three to oh period in twenty three, years.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
And certainly would keep To Justin herbert FOR mvp talk Going.
Hilo we talked about it last week With vinnie Bon
signor AND i kind of pushed back a little bit
as he maybe was putting Them Justin herbert in that
category Next Lamar, jackson next To Josh, allen and my thinking, is,
yes while he's going to be judged ultimately by what
happens in the, Playoffs Justin herbert hasn't peaked in the
(13:26):
regular season.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yet could that be happening right?
Speaker 5 (13:28):
NOW i think? So and you know it's interesting at
when you bring up next gen. Stats one thing that
caught my eye is a statt called IA y OVER
pa and for the non geeks in the audience that
stands for intended air yards per pass, attempt and right,
(13:51):
now Justin herbert and albeit its two games into the,
season he's averaging a career high in that. Category so
what that tells you is he is attempting longer passes
than he ever has had in his, career Which charger
fans have been clamoring for for the last several. Years you,
know back during a previous, ERA i used to say
(14:13):
that The chargers lead the league in screen passes for negative,
yardage and you can't get a pass completion for negative
yardage when you're throwing it far downfield instead of behind
the line of. Scrimmage so that he has that working for,
him five touchdown, passes no interceptions to start the. Season
the other Dimension adam IS i think last year he
(14:36):
wasn't healthy enough where he was able to run as
a weapon the way he's been able to do last
year or so. Forth this, year in, fact he was
A chargers leading rusher At Las vegas On Monday night
and he had the clinching run in the opener Against
Kansas city In. Brazil last, year he was really hampered
(14:58):
early in the season because of that is light ankle,
sprain and that limited his ability to be a weapon
with the running. Game and the final THING i would
say About herbert is a byproduct of that stat THAT
i gave you about the fact that he's attempting more
air yards for passe attempt than at any part of his.
Career that tells you that his offensive line is doing
(15:19):
an even better job protecting him collectively than they've done
in previous. Seasons.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Yeah now he looks extremely comfortable in the pocket and
extremely comfortable with the command of the. Offense and you
Mentioned Keenan. Allen how big is it to have him,
back just as not only you, know you know a
really good, receiver but that comfort, blanket that guy that
comes into your vision on a regular. Basis it feels
(15:47):
like their. Chemistry it just hasn't missed the beat since
he left and came.
Speaker 5 (15:51):
Back that's the perfect way to describe. It rodney Becomes
in his last season with The chargers twenty twenty, three
he AND i had a franchise record one hundred and
eight receptions and then of course he has the one
year hiatus with The. Bears but you're absolutely, right it's
like he missed absolutely no time With Justin herbert and
(16:13):
And Keenan allen and to a separate, Extent lad. McConkie
they're both extremely dependable guys on third. Down so now
when you have a gotta have a, situation as they
say across THE, nfl on a third down and medium
or a third down and, long most teams do only
have one got to have a go to. Receiver in
(16:35):
twenty twenty, three it was Just Keenan, allen in twenty twenty,
four it was Just lad. McConkie and now if you
have both of them on the field at the same,
time you can have two guys who you trust In
god to have a, situation but a lot of teams
in the league would be fortunate or wanting just to have.
One so you have the capability of those two third,
(16:56):
downs and you also have the dimension, that AS i
alluded too, early the offensive line gives the Whole chargers.
OFFENSE i, mean looking at the, stats you know the
station In Chris jones in week one And Max crosby
in week, two they did not allow a quarterback pressure
by either of those. Guys despite the doct of of,
course For Shaun. Slater their Pro bowl left tackle had
(17:17):
a season ending injury before the season.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Started isaac lowan Cron our guest here On rogan And,
RODNEY i met a Ma auslin in For Fred. ROGAN I,
loo what have you noticed That Jim harbaugh is second
season now with The chargers when it comes to culture
building and maybe philosophy is evolving as he gets a
little bit older in this coaching. Game how has he
kind of reinforced some of the old stuff he has?
(17:41):
Done is there's already new wrinkles to His khaki's here
With Jim.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
HARBAUGH i think that one key at him and that's
a really good point that you bring up about the
progression from year one to year. Two he seems more
enthusiastic this year than he even did last, year which
is saying. Something and you, know one potential explanation for
(18:05):
that is because he had a hip replacement during the
off season and he also had procedure to alleviate in
a regular heart. Beat it's interesting that The chargers will
be playing The Denver broncos this. Weekend last, year in
their first meeting against The, broncos which was In, Denver
Jim harbaugh had to leave the field during that game
(18:27):
because he was experiencing symptoms of an irregular heart. Beat
but fortunately and Thankfully zach got corrected during the off.
Season AND i really think it's a big step up
just in terms of simple continuity with The chargers defensive
system With Jesse mentor the defensive coordinator And Derwin james
(18:48):
and them having the same defensive system for a second straight.
Year that being, sad it's almost like A cast twenty
two situation Because i've just been so impressed with Jesse mentor's.
Defense i'm concerned that The chargers and they're gonna win
The Super, bowl they better win it this year BECAUSE
i would not be surprised at all If jesse mentioned
(19:09):
by the end of the season is an extremely hot
commodity as a potential head coaching. Candidate oh love.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
It check him out on the, pregame halftime and. Postgame
check him out on the pregame ON kf five begins
at noon This. Sunday Isaac loewencron always dialed in with
The chargers and everything else in. Between, man thanks for joining, Us,
isaac hey my.
Speaker 5 (19:34):
Pleasure thank you, guys take.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Care many thanks to.
Speaker 1 (19:40):
Our Man Isaac low And crown for joining us talking
about The chargers and could get off to a three
and oh start all in the. Division could be pretty
pretty big for. Them, hey, LISTEN i need a, Favor,
adam but maybe not the favor you were thinking.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
About let's get into.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
It i'm the one asking favors. Here how dare?
Speaker 2 (19:58):
You?
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Oh, yes we are keeping it moving and moving fast
on A, friday, man it is moving extremely, fast beautiful
day Outside Clayton kershaw on the. Mound we can't say
it enough and we can't thank him enough for what
he has, meant not only to The, dodgers but also
to this city of la and his eighteen years with
(20:23):
one team in an era where guys are quick to
jump ship and go chase the, money or go home
or go somewhere they think they can possibly win a
title right, now he's been here for us for eighteen
years and has delivered so throughout the. Day we are
absolutely celebrating, him and we'll celebrate him. Tonight And Adam,
(20:47):
man how nervous are? YOU i don't really get nervous
for other players when either WHEN i was playing or
even After i'm, playing other than my kids WHEN i
would see them play little league and.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
High school and stuff like.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
THAT i would get nervous for, him but in terms
of other, OTHERS i. DON'T i didn't really get nervous for,
him BUT i. Am i'm feeling a certain way About
kershaw tonight That i'm begging the baseball guys to give
him a good night.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Tonight you want him to get that good sendoff in
his final start in the regular. Season, now it's the
right team for him because it's The, giants and he
may have his LOWEST ra against any team In Major
League baseball against The. Giants he has dominated them.
Speaker 3 (21:35):
Throughout his entire. Career he has been a thorn in their.
Side and they are a ball.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Club you, know hitting's, contagious so is, slumping and they
continually seem to have issues at the plate no matter
where they're hitting, at even if it's not up north
in a ballpark that's more of a pitcher's. Ballpark so
he has a chance to dominate The, giants AND i
would not be shocked if that. Happens but you don't
want to see what happened against The diamondbacks couple of
(22:00):
years in the. Playoffs that's what everybody feared could this
be his wild game here and he gets knocked out
in the first.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Inning this can't be.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Don't want to see? That which Is it's like WHEN
i asked you earlier about what you know timing of,
IT i was, like in the back of my, Mind
i'm thinking about the same. Thing i'm, thinking, ooh maybe
Maybe i'll announce that after the. Game AFTER, i you,
know go seven strong innings and only give up a
run and strike out ten AND i can, Say, okay
(22:29):
this is.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
It that was. It that was, it not this is?
Speaker 3 (22:32):
It, yeah but that was.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
It i'm leaving and appreciate you and. Everybody BUT i
think you're right that he wanted to give the fans
an opportunity to come on out and see. Him if
you didn't have, tickets you better get him.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
Now he wants a virtue also, performance of. Course but
there's another element to, This. Rodney what type of pressure
do you think this puts on The? Dodgers and it
may be very welcome, pressure but to try to Help
kershaw go out on, top to go back to back
to win it this, season win it For kersh knowing
that this is it for, him that might put a
(23:07):
little more extra juice out there and focus on This
dodgers team to pull this thing.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Off you think that, they like most of the players,
knew like we been speculating since he made the announcement,
yesterday but he had been talking To Dave, roberts and
his family, knew and everybody knew that he was going
to do. This you think do you think most of
the players knew that this was going to be?
Speaker 4 (23:29):
IT i think it sounded Like Freddie freeman was told
a bit, ago and he actually Had kershaw sign a
jersey for him as soon as he found, out and
he made sure to sign the non disclosure he won't
tell anyone That kershaw's going to. Retire Max mounsey knew
apparently ahead of, time And kershaw, DID i, guess just
text the guys yesterday that he was going to make
(23:51):
it public. Pregame SO i like the fact that he
kept them in the, loop and he talked so glowingly
about this clubhouse in, particular and what a great year
it's been for him and what he's going to miss
most In. Rodney you could speak to this better than.
Anyone it's not so much the, games it's the. Guys
it's being there and going through the ups and downs
(24:11):
and winning with your. Squad that seems to always be
the thing that sticks with these athletes that, are you,
know a step away from.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
Retirement, yeah now that is that is the number one
thing that you, miss you really. Do you miss the,
Camaraderie you missed the locker, Room you missed interacting because
it becomes your. Family you, know you obviously have your,
family and as guys get, older you.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Really have your.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Family and have kids and your wife and or girlfriend or.
Whatever but that locker room teammate family is a, strong
strong bond that you missed.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
THAT i.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
KNOW i mean it took a minute for me to
get over, that knowing THAT i would get up and
go to the locker, room spend ten hours with the
same guys on a regular basis for six months and
then all of a, sudden that's that's. Over because it's
it's it's really a special. Thing And i'm sure that
(25:13):
when you talk to, him or anybody talks to, him
and he goes and he goes deep into what he's gonna.
Miss it is going to miss those road, trips those
those clubhouse, conversations those you, know guys playing practical jokes
on each, other the pranks and all those, things the card,
games on the, road getting on the, plane. Traveling as
(25:34):
much as you, know people hate the. Travel you don't
want to be at, home but those sometimes were bonding
moments that you can't get back and that you DIDN'T
a lot of times you didn't expect and you got
it because it is your second.
Speaker 2 (25:47):
Family so he's.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
Just throwing luggage, around telling him to get off the.
Bus he's he's gonna miss stuff like. That but all
of you hear the, camaraderie the brotherhood of these guys
have and then sometimes you, hear you, know players questioning
what their purpose.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
Is.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
NOW i don't think you've got to worry about that With,
kershaw god fearing man with his family and going on
mission trips and doing so much great work in the.
World but that is it just seems like it's such
a big shift in someone's life to not being out
there anymore with the.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Guys, yeah, mentally you're gonna have to go through.
