Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, we continue on Fred Rogan Rodney Pete, a
two hour show today on a five to seventy LA Sports.
So let's not waste any time and welcome on the
Man of the Big Chair, the Godfather, Ned COLLETTI, Ned, Welcome.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
To the show.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Hey guys, great to be with you.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Okay, we got a lot to get to but why
don't we start with this. We haven't had you on
since Clayton announced his retirement. You know him better than anybody.
How would you sum up his career? How are you
feeling when he made that announcement.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
Well, I don't know that I know him better than anybody.
I've known him a long time. But I think that
I had a little bit of sadness initially because obviously
it's turning a great page in Dodger history and turning
the page on a personal level with myself. But as
I look back on it, and I think of the
(00:55):
accomplishments that he's had and his loyalty to the organ,
to his teammates, to the fan base, and to be
able to kind of go out on his own terms,
not going out on the il, not going out with
a two to ten record, I think it's a just
maybe the exclamation point to a tremendous story, tremendous career,
(01:18):
and so I'm happy for him. I'm happy for Ellen.
I've known them before they got married and now that
I think they have four children with a fifth on
the way, So you know, I've seen a lot of
life developed there. I've seen a lot of maturity developed,
and I've seen Ultra compete from the very very beginning,
and even when he was considered the best in the game,
(01:40):
he didn't think he was the best in the game.
And when the best in the game think they got
a grew better and continue to get better, that's a unique,
unique person right there.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt ned on that subject. Were
you surprised at the timing of it or did you
feel like that was they had it mapped out and
this was the appropriate thing to do in terms of
timing wise.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
I think the timing was about as good as you
could get it. I don't think he wanted a victory tourist,
so to speak. I think he felt the odor to
the fan base to pitch one more time, at least
one more time at Dodger Stadium, certainly regular season the
final time but I think that the timing of it
just goes along with the rest of the story in
(02:27):
so many ways. I thought it was well done. I
thought his the selection of the date and how they
did it.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I don't think you get better than that. I think
that's the way.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
It fits both what I think is practical, what I
think is appropriate, and I think what is comfortable for him.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
So while we're talking about Clayton Kershaw, we'll kind of
transition into this. He comes out of the bullpen the
other night, look good. Sazaki came out of the bullpen
the other night and looked real good. Granted he just
got back through an ending. Looked great. Clayton looked good.
So my question to you is this, give them the
way the bullpen has been because let's be honest, you
cannot put Tanner Scott in any kind of high leverage
(03:06):
situation in that regardless season is done.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
You can't do it.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yep, all right.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
As a matter of fact, if you look at the
rest of the bullpen, they're overused and a bit tired.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
That's fair to say as well.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
So why wouldn't you have Sazaki come out the other night?
I think there were three innings left in the game.
He comes into the seventh, why not let him go
all three? Clayton comes in the other night, he went one,
Why not let him go two? Why can't a guide
like that who has been or is a starter, come
into the game and just finish the game? Why are
(03:39):
you fooling around taking them out after one inning? Putting
two other guys in it get hit? Now the game
is tied, You put Clayton and he holds it. Then
you put try It in and the bases are loaded
and they get out of there with their life. I mean,
I don't understand why if you're bringing these guys in,
you just can't let them pitch more than one inning.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Well, as I've said on the show many times.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
They take the long view, which has been ultra successful
for him. And we don't know what the weekend holds.
If you're going to bring Sasaki in for two to
two plus innings a couple of days ago, is he
going to be able to pitch again before we get.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
To next week? Is Clayton going to be able to
do that?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
I mean, I thought he was in line to start
perhaps one of these games. You know, I think you
used Clayton in that situation to get him back acclimated
to and he hasn't done it that much. You know,
a starting pitcher that started four hundred and fifty games,
Now you're going to work out of the bullpit in
key situations. How long does it take you to get ready?
How long does how long do you mentally.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Prepare for this? So I thought it was a little
bit of a trial.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
Run, great successful trial run, and I think Sasaki the
same thing.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
But with Sasaki, I.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Think there's there's a maybe a little bit more to
it because of his youth and because of his inexperience
at this level doing what he's doing. I think that
you take take that one inning and you say, as
you said, I mean, he was exceptional. You know that's
all you need right then and there. Okay, you know
you're gonna end up holding San Diego off. It's it's
(05:05):
you know, a long shot for them to do it.
So even if you don't win that game, you're still
not in dire straits. But I think you leave him
with the feeling of confidence. And I think any young
player that hasn't been in a month of October and
from time to time I don't know him, but from
time to time.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
He can you.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Know, he can get a little bit, a little bit skitterish,
I guess.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
So I think it's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Hey, let him get out there, let him get an
inning now in Seattle. Maybe he gets another inning, maybe
he gets two innings. But to have him go into
the month of October with great confidence I think is
as important.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
In this case.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Great health is number one, but also with great confidence.
To me sits right behind great health, because you can't
have him going in there, anybody going in there jittery
or trying to get adjusted, or looking around and going,
oh my goodness, what we're doing here?
Speaker 3 (05:57):
You know, you can't do it.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
The games are too big, the situations are too are
too magnified.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
So I was cool with it.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
I thought it was great, and I thought it also
gave them a taste and a look at what.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
They can do down the road.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
And you know what it also does because everybody's scouting,
everybody at this time of the year, a lot of
advanced scouting. They watched it, the other teams watched it,
and now they know that there's there's not going to
be the same bullpen that they've taken advantage of throughout
the course of the season, it's it's going to be
a different setup, and we don't necessarily know who's coming
(06:34):
in next. But we just saw one guy Hall of
Famer come in and have a seamless sitting against a
good Arizona team desperate to win. And you saw the
young kid come in and was tremendous, was really unhittable.
His stuff is as good as anybody's. It's a matter
of his command and his confidence.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
That's a great point when you're talking about Sazaki and
going into the postseason with confidence. You know, you let
him go back out there for a second inning and
he gets hit knocked around, it's like, oh, here we
go again. Or he loses his command, it's like here
we go again. But get him, let him build that confidence.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
It makes sense.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
But you're right, he was absolutely unhittable. I mean some
pisses that were at the long corners or the high
corners that at one hundred miles.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
Of the arm, we're just not split, Like you can't
touch the split. The touch is going to have a
tough time all onto it.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Exactly, uh ned.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
But when you go into the playoffs and you're looking
at look at this team, and in years past, and
you mentioned Clayton, because when Clayton was the best in
the business, every playoff game he started game one usually
right yep. With this team, with the guys that they have,
does it does it matter you you pick your three
starters and you go, Okay, let's figure out the order,
(07:49):
or is there one predicative particular guy that they're gonna
save and say you're going to start game one of
the postseason next week?
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Well, I'd be surprised if doesn't show, Hey, starting one.
Is that they've I think they've blinded up that way
a bit. I think that that gives them the most
opportunities to pitch him without disrupting what he does. I
think it sets things up. To me, that sets things
up excellently. If if he's you know, if he's ready.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
To do it, I don't think he's. I haven't seen him.
They're not ready to do everything.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
So I think that that's that's where you start, and
you set the tone. He has been exceptional, I mean
off the chart exceptional the last month and really good
prior to that. If I have if you're asking me
to pick somebody, I'm starting right there, because then it
gives him. You get through that first series, it gives
(08:46):
him a chance to do it again later. He's such
a talent and you got and yea, I'm a modo
Glass the same thing. But I think I start with him.
I think I go there right off the gate because
it's going to be tough to beat him, and you
up one or nothing in the best of three, So.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
You go him, snell Yamamoto, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
I think so, But I also have you know, I
would also take one of those, uh and figure out
who is the best out of the bullpen, because they
have you know, you mentioned you didn't mention mentioned Glass. Now,
if he can pitch out of the pen, what a
weapon that is, see you know the bullpen. To me,
the rolls, all the rolls are out.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
The window at this point in time, would be they've.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Got so much talented pitching, and they've played this season
out and they've given people ample opportunity, including Tanner Scott.
But at this point in time, you're just trying to
buy out and how are you going to do it?
And when you align O, you add she into it,
when you add him the Glass Now and you just
mentioned three great starters, and we didn't touch on Glass.
(09:48):
Now we're she and who's been excellent, And then you
talk about Kersh and then you talk about about Sasaki.
Nobody's got that. Nobody's gonna run three starters out there
in the first rounde like the three guys you've mentioned
and not even have Tyler Glass now on the list.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Think about that.
Speaker 4 (10:05):
That's why I think they are definitely the team to beat,
not by a little bit, but by a lot because
they have what nobody else has. Other teams are going
to run out of. Guy that's that's a good Big
League starter, not elite, not elite stuff, and you need
to have elite brain power, elite concentration and or elite
(10:27):
stuff at this point of the season.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
You can't get by without it.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
Yeah, I agree with Matt, but no, it's good ned
you go. Okay, so you get past the three game series,
you get to the NLDS and the NLCS. Are you
going still with the three man rotation? Are you going
four with what the.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Depends on the day, depends on the days off.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
I think you may go four in the best of three.
But see, you know what we don't know is we
don't know how if they get through the first series
we don't know how Game one is going to go,
so you keep your options. I would always have a
Game one starter in a game two starter that I
would know going into that series, and you still got
(11:07):
games to figure that out. You don't have to make
that decision. You get on the eve of it, really
and then I would see, Okay, where are we at.
How do guys come back after this much rest? How
was their last outing in a playoff situation? Did they
have some heavy innings? Did they struggle with this type
of hitter? You know, the analytics will tell you so
(11:28):
much about the X ray of every team. I don't
make that call yet. I wait to see what's going on.
If you're up three to nothing, maybe you maybe you
go to an opener who knows to give guys more time.
If you're down three nothing, you might you know, you
might be bringing back the number one guy.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
I don't know yet.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
I don't know enough to know.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
I'll make that decision when I have to.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
You know, ned last year, the team went to adversity
at the end of the season, and I think that
was actually a boost for them, to be very honest,
because they won the World Series in prior years where
they go out and smoke everybody, then they get beat
I think it's safe to say this team has gone
through a lot of ups and downs this year, a
lot of.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
Ups and downs.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I think it's a good thing. And I believe, as
you said, their pitching is the best done. Not even
a conversation. I don't think anybody anywhere would argue that.
So that tells me it comes down to are they
going to hit? And of late they have been hitting,
and if they continue to hit, I'm with you, Ned,
I don't think anybody beats them.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
No, you know, we know the big three are and yeah,
you're gonna miss Will Smith for a period of time.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
Perhaps.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
The other guys that I think set this team apart
are t O Muncy and Edmunds. See and Edmunds kind
of limp off the field a little bitter, have a
little bit of a jarda whose job there? You know,
they kind of stopped me for a second because this
kid can play. He's an ultimate Dodger. But those three
guys and and Pose, those three guys are four guys.
(12:57):
They make this team so far different than everybody else.
It's like having the four elite starters. It's like having
you know, a curse or a sosaki, you can call it.
It takes them to another another level that other teams
can't compete with. Everybody talks about, you know, the Yankees
are doing great and Toronto's had.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
A big year.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
You know, do look at their lineups they've got They've
got weak spots in their lineups. Every team does, except
the one in LA Nobody's got one to nine. You know,
Trey Turner comes back. Philly might be close, but Trey
Turner is a speed guy. He's coming back off a hamstring.
The chance is that he's going to be one hundred
percent at his one.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Of his greatest attributes, and he's got many.
Speaker 4 (13:38):
He is unrealistic. Nobody can compete with this team. I'm
telling you, there's there's this too much to it, too
much depth. This is how Andrew built it. This is
how Mark Walter and Todd Bowley and those guys built it.
From a financial standpoint, and to keep going and to
keep adding and to make it stronger and stronger and stronger.
And now you get to the last month of the season,
(14:00):
the month that writes to industry.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Who's better. Yeah, I don't know anybody better.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
And don't forget about playoff, key game playoff.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
Yeah, oh yeah, fifteen. I think he's got fifteen playoff bombs.
You know, you're talking about the absolutely lead in the game.
He just waits for this month, you know, yeah.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Yeah, no, I absolutely love it. But I think you're
I think you're absolutely right. So Fred earlier in the
show said that, you know, getting past this three game
wildcard series is more than likely for the Dodgary not
and you want to look past anybody.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
But then they go to.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Play the Phillies, and he believes that Milwaukee, even though
they've had the best season and they've been playing the
best and most consistent most of the season, they're going
to find out the playoffs are a lot different, and
he doesn't see them moving forward. How do you feel
about that, because you've said that in the past, if
you haven't been there as as an individual or even
as a as a group of guys, is not the
(14:57):
same as a regular season. How do you feel about
Milwaukee and them moving on?
Speaker 3 (15:01):
I think you're right on.
Speaker 4 (15:02):
I think I think Milwaukee's had a tremendous year. One
of their best pictures. He's out woodrun, So you know,
winning in April to September is not easy. And and
they've they've outed everybody, but October is a different month.
And I can tell you from from living there, I
can tell you from experience playing in Philly, who will
(15:25):
have the home field advantage is not easy. That is
not an easy mark right there. And that says as
we go back to Susaki for a minute, you know,
if if, if he's pictured in that series, you know
that will be a big moment for him, not just
on the mound, but getting on the mound in the bullpen.
But the way that place operates, you know, it's there's
(15:48):
some intimidation to it. It's a tough, tough spot. I
mean I saw with us going back to eight oh nine.
You know, Bret Meyers tuo behind Manny ramirez Is head
in the first inning and and the best said, hey,
settle this, and we we blinked, we didn't do it,
and they just went right past us, not once twice
(16:08):
when Matt Stais hitting the ball off of Brox and
listened to the parking lot and then Jimmy Rollins with
the triple off the wall.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
I don't remember this stuff very obviously, but you know
it's you know, but that's the place. That's the place,
and it's a tough, tough spot. Milwaukee.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
I think, you know, much respect for Milwaukee. They'd done
great stuff.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
They Can they beat a team? Absolutely? Can they win
a series? Absolutely? Do I see them beating the Dodgers? No,
I don't.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
That final question, So the Dodgers will play either the
Mets or the Reds. I think they win either series.
If the Reds beat the Mets out. With all of
the money Steve Cohen spent, is this just a disaster
year for them?
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Well, because how we define disaster, But it's certainly not
a good year. I mean, with the money that spends,
you know, you've got to you shouldn't be playing at
this stage of the season, trying to stay alive, trying
to to play perhaps.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Three more games. I don't.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
I don't think you do that. I mean, that's that's
not the that wasn't the game fun. I don't think.
I don't think they said in a meeting of twelve
months ago and said, Okay, we're gonna do all this,
We're gonna sign this, we're gonna sign soda, we're gonna
do all these things, and hopefully we'll get to the
last weekend of the season and be able to beat
out Cincinnati and Arizona. I don't think that conversation took place.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
That's okay, that's fine.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
I mean money can't buy everything. My money is.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
You know, there's a lot more to it than finance.
Finance helps you get injuries, you can, you can work your.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Way around it. Finance, no doubt helps, and we didn't
always have that that leeway back in the day.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
But you know, it doesn't mean that you're gonna win
a championship.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Just just spent a lot.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
The right people always count. You gotta have the right
people in the right spots.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Other than that, you got no chance.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
No right net.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Thanks for the time. You have a terrific weekend. We'll
catch up again next week.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Yeah, let's talk next week. Thanks guys, you got it.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Score big with flooring from Hernande's Wholesale Flooring shop Hernanda's
Wholesale Flooring dot Net. Remember this, no sale beat wholesale
all right, when we come back, you may applaud what
the Lakers did, but I'm puzzled by it.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
We'll figure it out.
Speaker 6 (18:39):
Make AM five seventy la sports a preset before you
plug in your phone presets and the iHeartRadio app now
available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Just another easy
way to listen to LA's best sports talk.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
Oh yeah, it is Friday. It's two hours show for
Fred not to day. Keep it moving.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Let's go Dodgers in Seattle, Dodgers in Seattle, and Machinean
goes tonight. It'll be his final start of the regular season.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
All right.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
So the Lakers did something yesterday. Rob Polinka announced it,
and I guess you say congratulations to JJ Reddick because
after one year they extended his contract. Now, during the offseason,
apparently he met with Tom Brady, he met with Sean McVay.
He got some tips on being a better leader. And
it's also safe to say in his rookie season he
(19:30):
made some mistakes. He made some mistakes, but there are
growing pains associated with that. Now, he signed I think
a four year deal and he completed one recently. Right no, no,
the original Yeah, the original deal is a right year deal.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Right now.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
So he signed an original four year deal and he
completed year one and there were some hiccups, but he
was a first year coach. That means there are three
years remaining on his current deal three not six months,
three years.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
And then Rob.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Pullinker comes out and says, you know, this is the guy.
He's going to build the culture, he's going to take
care of it. We want him here a long time.
We're extending his deal. And here's my question. First, congratulations,
why why why would you do that? You have three years,
the guy's coached one year, he didn't win the NBA title.
(20:23):
Why what was the purpose of that extending his deal.
It's not like anybody was knocking on the door and saying,
we got to hire JJ.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Because I can't. He's got a deal. How long was
it extended for. I don't know. They didn't say, but
it's extended two years, three years.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
It's extended past the three more years that we correct
he had on his original contract, it would assume, and
maybe it's a two year extension or who knows.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Yeah, you know, I'm I'm I'm with you. I'm with you.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Given the track record of the Lakers lately, of their
players and coaches of being quick with the trigger, think
about it since but Frank Vogel before him, I mean,
it's since Phil Jackson left. I mean, it has been
a quick trigger with coaches and maybe they look at
(21:17):
it as we don't want to quick trigger this anymore.
Luca's going to be here long term. Let's let's match
him up with the coaches going to be here long term.
Problem is, if they fall off a cliff next year,
then you got him for another four or five more
years under contract, and then.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
What do you do? It makes zero sense. Well, they
got googen him. Now they can buy out whatever they
want to buy out.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
That's what I was going to say. If you remember
Mark Walter, the great line I lose millions to make billions.
He gets it, and I can assure you they could
buy JJ Redick out when they take over if they
want him to go.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
They can handle that.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
But it seems so confusing an odd We're going to
reward him for making mistakes coaching in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
We're going to reward him.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
He's that good, is he? Well, we want to send
a signal that he's going to be our coach. He
is your coach for.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
Three more years.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
Well, we need to let everybody know. What more do
you need to let them know? He's got a contract
for three years this year If he leads you to
the NBA Championship maybe you go, now, we're going to
extend your deal right now because you know something, you
want a title.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
You did it.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
And if you say, well we want Luca to be happy,
A lot can change in three years. A lot. I
love you today until I hate you tomorrow. Pretty simple,
that's the NBA. So you've got the security of JJ
Reddick already sitting there. Why would you do that, because
(23:01):
let's be honest, Yes, they were more up than down
last year they got Luca.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
It was exciting.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
JJ Reddick had some serious missteps, serious missteps, some game
management issues. Certainly, his demeanor with the media at times
was awful, all true, not being unfair statements of fact.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
I don't see why you reward that guy with an extension.
Speaker 1 (23:27):
How about let's see how you do in year two,
because even if you're iffy in year two, you got
another two years.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Let's say we get to year three. Hey, you know something.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
Okay, took them three years, but here we are. Okay,
let's sit down and extend this thing.
Speaker 6 (23:47):
By the way, Sham's just reported not that long ago,
a two year extension on top of the deal he
already had.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
So no is a five year deal.
Speaker 6 (23:53):
He has a contract through the twenty nine to thirty season.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Twenty nine thirty?
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Why why would you do that?
Speaker 2 (24:03):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (24:04):
It says to me seriously, And I don't know. It's
just me looking from the outside. H Hey, before the
big hammer comes, we're gonna take care of you before
they get in here and start doing what they're gonna do.
Whatever that would be meaning googaheym, Yeah, we're gonna take
care of you.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
So you're you're on.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
The board before the new owners take over, We're gonna
we're gonna do you a solid before they come in
and start cleaning house.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Maybe doesn't JJ did did think Mark Walter? He did
thank him, so I'm sure they consulted with him. But
what do you think he's going to say. No, he
doesn't even own the.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
Team yet, you don't think he's got to say.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
I think he has to say. But I think the
way he conducts his business. And Kevin reminded me this
morning of Don Mattingly when he managed the Dodgers. They
sat with Don a few years. They didn't just yank
him out. They gave him his due, They let him
have his run. So I think Mark Walter has to say.
(25:07):
But if Rob Polinka comes and says, hey, we want
to do this. We think it'll be great for our culture.
I can see Mark Walter going, yeah, go ahead, yeah,
go ahead, because we have to pay him off. I
can find the money in my couch. So we look
like good guys. We're good guys. We're all about the Lakers.
We're gonna let you guys operate it. We're good guys.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Yeah. I think he did.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
That's exactly what I think happened. Good on JJ, and
good on JJ's agent. I gotta give him to him
that that is a great move. I mean, because the
one that benefits is JJ. You got nothing to lose
now he's got. Now he's got basically what a five
year deal now yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Yeah, good for JJ, good for his agent. Idiotic for
the Lakers, but good for JJ and his agent. If
he leads you to the NBA title in his first year,
if you are feeling so magnanimous, maybe a tear up
his deal, give him a raise and give him a
new one. Maybe you do that if he leads you
(26:15):
to the NBA title. Were the Lakers in the title
last year, didn't played for the championship?
Speaker 2 (26:20):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
I don't think so either, So why are we rewarding
you when we're already paying you?
Speaker 2 (26:28):
And a lot of the.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Conversation around this was, oh, you know, he met with
Sean McVay, He talked to Tom Brandy, he talked to
other people. He got a really good understanding. I don't
care who he met with. What is that supposed to mean?
If I go interview Sean McVay, is I heard going
to give me a five year extension on my deal?
If I go talk to Sean McVay and I say, Sean,
what's the secret to winning? And he goes, I'll tell
(26:51):
you what it is, championship mentality every day. And I
walked back into the building and talked to Brian long Ago.
I'm going to tell you something. You might not know this,
but I got the answer, championship mentality every day. And
he goes, my god, I'm giving you a new five
year deal?
Speaker 2 (27:12):
What what? Who thinks that way? Honestly? Why would you
do that? I don't know.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
Maybe it is maybe it is a Luca thing. Maybe
it is a let's make Luca and and JJ joined
at the hip. Let's join him at the hip as
long as we can join him at That's the only
thing I can think of is that they are trying
to appease Luca in certain ways.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Otherwise, why would you do it? You wouldn't. Kevin, is
Lucas deal three years? Yes? His extension was for three years.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Okay, So now JJ is covered for Luca's deal, Yes,
But can I tell you something you might you might
not know he was covered for Lucas deal already. So
in this year, the first year of Lucas deal, which
would have been the second year of JJ's, if they
play really well, Luca, because you love him, we're going
(28:09):
to extend him. There was absolutely no necessity to do
this none. Look at year two of your deal is
the third year of his. We're going to extend him
five more years now because you love him so much.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
I don't know. I honestly I don't either. I don't either.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
All right, come on break, Okay, we'll come back and wrapping.
Speaker 6 (28:43):

(29:04):
Just go to a five seventy LA Sports on the
iHeartRadio wip.
Speaker 5 (29:09):
Oh yeah, back to wrap it up two hours show today.
Before we do that, Freddie, I got to give a
shout out to my man Pete crow Armstrong for the
Chicago Cubs who are headed to the playoffs. Himself, he
just became a thirty to thirty man today hit a
home run and thirty stolen.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Basis so good on Pete.
Speaker 5 (29:29):
Local kid Harvard Westlake, Sherman Oaks Little League and remember
watching him play when it was a kid growing up,
and you knew back then that he was special. So
congratulations there, Pete crow Armstrong.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
That really is cool. And by the way, Roder, you
know him right, you know him. I've seen him on
interviews and stuff. What was he twenty three years old?
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Yeah, something like that. He's an old soul.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
He is smart, and he is poised, and he is
polished and he is a in a lot of twenty
three year olds don't get it, this guy really seems.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
To get it. Yeah he does.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
And he was like that as a kid growing up,
you know, respectful, understood and humble. Even though he was
the best kid since the time he was probably six
seven years old, he was always humble about it.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
So congratulations.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
All right, So Emmacheen goes tonight Sunday, it's over. We
get to the wild Card next week. We don't know
the times of the wild Card. We do know they
will be at Dodger Stadium and we don't know who
they'll play. It will be the Mets, Reds or I
guess if all hell broke clues to Diamondbacks. I guess
they're still breathing, playing in Milwaukee, and Milwaukee clinches home
(30:44):
field all the way through, number one seed, all the
way through. So they're playing today, they're playing. They're gonna
have to play a little bit if they want that.
So it'll be a tough hill battle uphill battle for Cincinnati.
So we'll see, yeah, but we do know that. So
Monday's a two hour show. Eric will be here and
then we'll get to the wild Card and depending on
what times the games are here locally, that will depend
(31:06):
when we go on the air. We could go on
some mornings, we could go on in our normal time period,
but we'll keep you posted.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
Ronnie.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Thank you for a great week Kevin, really appreciate your
efforts as well, Rodney, good weekend, and we do it
on Monday, Yes, sir,
