Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, here we going hello from Dodgers Stadium as
we get ready for game one of the Wild Car
Dodgers and Red tonight. Fred Rogan, Rodney, Peaked Rodney. We
don't get out here very often, No.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We don't, Fred, But man, this is what we've been
waiting for right all season long. Everybody's been waiting for October.
Wait for October. You play for October one hundred and
sixty two games, and now we're here. It's not quite October,
but it is October baseball. And you know what, Fred,
being here this early at Dodger Stadium, it just I
(00:33):
love it because it brings back so many memories of
just you know, I know its a long time ago,
but me playing because the smell of the grass is different,
The people look different, everything's so green and clear, Fred,
what do you mean the people look different? Well, the
people it's different than the regular season. We've got a
little pepping, this step, got a little they got a
little look in their eye because it's it's the postseason. Fred,
(00:56):
everything's a little bit when the grass of greener.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, it does. But I gotta do I have to
tell you. You said, you know, guys have a pep
in their step. Yeah, there are two people that work
for the Reds. They are just crossing behind home plate.
These guys have no pep in their step, and I
think if they tried to run, they'd break a hip.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Fred, you should have saw them last week. They were crawling. Yeah,
I think they had walkers. Now they're walking without the walkers.
So obviously we're here, and unfortunately you're not.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
But quite frankly, you can't be here anyway because the
gates don't even open. So we are here. We are
keeping an eye and everything that is going on. Ground's
crew out there. They've got the postseason logo on the field,
and it really does look beautiful and it's going to
be a great day for baseball now. Dodger historian, family
friend and friend of the show Brian Lee suggests this
(01:50):
nineteen ninety five was the last time the Dodgers and
Reds played in the postseason, so he sent a video
of Game one of the playoffs and Rodney there was basically.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
A third of the stadium full. Fans were still upset
about the strike that year. Wow, that's amazing, and it
was here, Yeah, it was here. I can't imagine a
third of the stadium at Dodgers Stadium. That didn't even
seem right. But that leads to this.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
If you wanted to come to a game, if you
were going to come to a playoff game, and you've
been saving your money and you think I should come
out to a game, come tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Tonight is the night.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Because I went on the secondary market and started looking
up tickets. Yeah, they are affordable. Oh, they are affordable
for tonight. There are tickets available if you're coming come tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
And by the way, aren't we giving away some tickets?
Read we are.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
We're giving away a pair of tickets each hour for
tomorrow's game. So stay with us. We're here till two o'clock.
Each hour we give away tickets, and you'll have a
chance to come tomorrow night and watch y'amamoto pitch Tonight.
It'll be Blake Snell Rodney against Hunter Green.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Love it what. We're giving a pair of tickets? Yes, Fred,
that's what That's why I said it, Fred, Yes, Fred,
we were just in a meeting fifteen minutes ago. Wait
a minute, yesty.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
We're giving away a ticket, a pair of for tonight
and a two pair for tomorrow night. I gave you
a Chris Paul Ally, you and you and you let
us slip through your fingers.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
That's what happened.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
You forgot your shoes. So this is great news. We're
giving away tickets for tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yes, oh, this is huge, So keith less, we'll give
those away. Well, it didn't really matter when we give
those away.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Doesn't because if we give them away by two, you'll
still have a chance to get down here.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
That's true. All right.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
So we're giving away three pair of tickets, two for
tomorrow night and one for tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
That's it. And you know what, don't say thank you.
I fought hard to get those tickets for tonight. Sure,
so it was my pleasure. Yes, all right. Now let's
get to what's really important. The playoff roster. It was
announced about an hour ago.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
So as we begin our journey here into the postseason,
who's in and who's out? You want to start with
position players, Rodney, Yeah, yeah, let's do that.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
So obviously Mookie is in. Alex call who they acquired
at the trade deadline, is in. Here is a surprise.
Justin Dean is in.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah. Now, Justin Dean is in.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Because of speed. If they need somebody to get out
there and run. It'll be Justin Dean. But who is
taking a seat because Justin Dean is on the playoff roster,
Michael Confordo. I gotta tell you, if you're Michael Confordo,
that's stings. That stings, And there it is, after the
(04:54):
entire season of up and down. Maybe he's a little better,
maybe he is struggling again. He is not going to
play in this wild card series? Rodney, do you think
that was a good move? Well, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I mean, time will tell, and I hate to try
to make any kind of predictions, but I gotta imagine
you said it, Fred, Justin Dean can run. He's got speed.
Maybe the Dodgers are looking to run a little bits
on Kim is in the in the on the roster
as well, so maybe they're trying something that Hey, as
we go through these playoffs, we want to have the
(05:30):
ability to put some speed on the basis and is
probably why to try a few things in this series
against the Reds. Fred, that's the only thing I can think.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Of, all right, Tommy Edmond obviously is there, Freddie Freeman,
Keith k So now he's going to get hot.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
He already is.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Well, now he's going to really get hot. Yeah, this
is it. This is exactly why he's here. He's a specialist.
He's a playoff specialist. Yes, he is signing for the
whole season. He get into the playoffs and then he explodes.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
So key k is there? Rodney you mentioned Kim there,
Max Munsey obviously o'tani Pa has Rojas.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
And how about this? They will carry three catchers. Will
Smith is activated. He's on the roster. Now he is better.
I don't know how much he's going to play. Who
he may start for all I know, but he's here
and he's ready.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
But that didn't if you're again going back to Michael Conforto,
doesn't that sting even more? Not only is are you
not on the roster because they're they're bringing in you know,
the young kid would speed justin Dean, but also they're
carrying three catchers and Will Smith more than likely won't
play unless it's emergency situation, so they carry three catchers
(06:42):
instead of putting you on the roster. You talk about stinging.
That's a stang, Fred with an ad.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Okay, pitchers, here we go, Well, this guy's got to
be on the roster. There's really no choice because it
just wouldn't be a Dodger game without him.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Jack Dryer, of course, Jack Dryer on the roster. Glass
now on the roster. Edgardo Enriquez is on the roster.
The heart throwing right hander, now this should be fun.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Sazaki is on the roster, and we'll talk about that
in a second. Of course, Emmitt she and Blake Snow
who will start tonight? Blake trying him, Alex Vesia, Robleski
and Yamamoto. That's how they go in the Division Series.
Clayton Kershaw not on miss Tanner's gout? Did I Oh
my god, Oh my god, his name was there and
(07:30):
I can't even see it. Yeah, it was right in
front of me and I and fred I blacked it out. Okay,
So this morning we're checking social media the Cincinnati Reds,
and if you check that and you check the comments,
the fans are going, come on, boys, good luck, what
(07:50):
a year. We're all rooting for you. You're making all
of us proud. You go to the Dodger Instagram and
it said, if Tanner's got pitcheons, I'm jumping off a bridge.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
If Blake trying it, goes in the game, I don't
know what I'll do. So there's a little bit of
a difference here in expectation in fans.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
The Reds are just boys. We couldn't be any prouder
of you. And the Dodger fans we haven't even started yet,
and they said we've better not seen Tanner Scott or
Blake trying in the game. I did not omit Blake
trying intentionally, and I did not omit Tanner Scott intentionally.
I'm sorry, I really I don't even know how I
overlooked that. But here's the question, Rodney. Yeah, okay, aside
(08:33):
from what I said yesterday which was not well received,
does Tanner Scott pitch?
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Yes, Yes, I think we will see him. I bet
money in the house that we don't see him close
a game in the ninth with one run, or tie
a game or something like that. It's very close. I
don't see him coming in in that situation. I think
it'll be a very low leverage situation that will see
him Like what but what's low leverage? Well, well for him,
(09:04):
I think we gotta be we gotta be up five runs,
that's all. Yeah, Fred, I'm not gonna you know, I'm
not trying to kill the guy, but yeah, we gotta
be up five runs. You can still withstand a grand slam. Okay,
so that's the barometerometer. Wait, we can't put you in. Yes,
if a grand slam will beat us? Correct? Correct? Okay,
Well that and anything later than the seventh not happening.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
So what you're saying is he can pitch in the
sixth inning you're up.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
By five runs. There you go. Okay, no offense, taters guy.
All right, So who's gonna close? That's a good question.
That's a good question. I don't I I would bet
that Vessia closes. But then but then again, he is
your high leverage guy too, so it's you know, it's
(09:57):
tough to say, but I think they're gonna lean on
Blake trying to to come in at the end. I
really do, and and kind of play it by year
and maybe it's Henriquez, but I don't think they are
clear about who is going to close the game until
the game plays itself out.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Okay, first, I'll take Vessia. I'll buy that he loves Robleski.
You might see him in a high leverage situation. Yeah, right,
I don't know if Jack how high the situation will
be with Jack Dryer, but I think you're going to
see him.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah, he'll give you some length for sure. Yeah, but yeah,
I don't know if he's going to be the back
end eight to ninth high leverage situation in that category.
But it's unfortunate that the up and down season he's had.
But you're gonna have to utilize Blake Trenton, you really are,
and hope he's uh, he's found himself and hopefully he's on.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Well here's the thing you're gonna find out real fast. Yeah,
he goes into a high leverage situation, you are going
to know the game he goes in. Whatever his outading is,
we'll define him the rest of the way because he
has been up and down. And again, you don't have
the ability here to roll the dice. Well, we'll get
you tomorrow. No, we got to get him tonight. So
if he goes in and does a good job high leverage,
(11:14):
he'll be back. But if he gets dinged Rodney, I
don't think you can go back to him. You don't
have you don't have the runway anymore, you don't have
the ability anymore.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
No, you don't. You don't. Here's the thing, because we've
got the rotation for the Dodgers, right, We've got Snell tonight,
Yamamoto and then Otani if necessary? Right? What about Glass?
Now about Glass? Now? Just getting him ready, to get
him some some some run at the at the back
(11:45):
end of a game, you know, let him come in
and close in the night, right? Why not? Honestly? Why not?
Why not? What are you waiting for one dred percent?
What are you waiting for a saving him? Yeah? Yeah,
if you're he's he's not a part of this equation
and this series, why not utilize him. I gotta believe
(12:07):
they might be thinking that for it. They might be
thinking that. And I'll tell you something else.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I believe they're thinking and we don't want to be
prisoners of the moment and get overly excited.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
And this is a guy I love. I love watching
Sazaki pitch. We have talked.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
When Rodney and I were in Tokyo, we were there
for the Susaki game. Yeah, and I looked forward to that.
You know, I will tell my grandkids I saw his
first game with the Dodgers pitch.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
I was just thrilled when he was doing it. I
love the guy.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
And you know, during the season, obviously he was really good,
or it was an adventure. He gets hurt, he goes
to the miners, he works on stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
And know this.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
In his early outings down to the miners, he was
not that sharp, but all of a sudden he sharpened up.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
So then they bring him up.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
You'll put him in relief the other night, and of
course I'm the guy screaming leave him in the game,
taking him out.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I knew he could do it all along.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
So now he's here, and I have to tell you,
I think i'd give him some run early. Let's find
out where he's at. How early, how early in what situation?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Is not a high leverage situation or or is he
a guy that you would utilize right now in a
high leverage I high leverage him right now.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Yeah, let's find out where we're at. I mean, if
he walks two guys, he's coming out.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Yeah, but do you want to do that to him?
Which is the reason why they let him go that
one inning and took him out of the game because
he had great success. So now he has the confidence
if you let him go longer, there's a chance to
him to you know, kind of get a erratic or
have a couple of struggle with some hitters. So I
thought it was a good move that just allow him
to pitch that one inn, and he was electric. I
(13:49):
mean he was, you know, one hundred low and low
and on the black as they say. So I would
not put him in a real high leverage situation. I'd
give him some run, maybe he's the first guy after
Blake finishes up, maybe the seventh to eighth, but I
would not put him in the toughest of situations, especially
(14:10):
in this series. I want to get him some work,
but I wouldn't put him high leverage. So he's not
closing for you, No, no, not in this series.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
All right, So tonight for Cincinnati. Hunter Green goes once
to Notre Dame High School. Is he for Valencia? I
can't remember.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
I'm not sure. I just know he went to Notre Dame.
Was the phenom. He was the second overall pick when
he was drafted, twenty five year old. You know Jack
went to.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
High school with him. Oh yeah, yeah, my son Jack. Okay,
freshman year at Notre Dame. Very nice.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
The thing about Hunter Green, and we'll see tonight first
he has a tremendous shortstop as well. By the way,
Yeah he was yea and he could hit back then too. Yep.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
The thing about him is and and the problem with
him has been that at one point or another during
the season he gets hurt.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
And he was hurt Fisher. Now he's okay, And when
he is okay, there's a reason he was a second
overall pick. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
I mean, he throws smoke. It's not even funny. He's
not playing. You better be on time with him or
you're dead. So we know he can throw, and he's
developed the secondary pitches as well. You know, sometimes young
kids come up, you know, throwing a hundred. That's what
they lean on. But as you get up here, everybody
can hit a hundred. Yeah, and you got to mix
(15:28):
it up. So his secondary pitches have been good. His
off speed has been really good, his change up has
been really good, which he has developed over the last
couple of years. And now he's healthy again, and I'm telling.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
You that kid will be amped up to come back
home to play the Dodgers in the playoffs. He's going
to top out about one hundred and three hundred and
four tonight. And the thing about it is. If he
is on, he's going to be a problem. Yeah. If
he is on, he is one of the better pitchers
in the Nationals. It's really the only chance the Reds
(16:00):
really have. Yeah, he's gotta, he's gotta, he's gotta. He's
got to dominate and go deep into this game if
the Reds have any kind of chance. All right, So
let's say he's five innings and he is lights out,
all right, and the uh, the lineup's turning over.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Now we'll keep an eye on him. Now we'll see
what happens third time through. Yeah, how many you know,
how much can he go? How many pitches will he throw?
And how effective will he be after a period of time.
I mean, if he's on the Dodgers, I got to
get to the Reds bullpen. If he's on that, that's
what's got to happen, because they are not going to
(16:41):
just tear into him. If he is a little bit off,
and he has been known to be a little bit off,
then it's gonna be a different story and it's gonna
be a short evening for him.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
I mean it was it was a little bit like
that last time he came here to dodge David and pitch.
You know, first, I think it was the first three
or four innings he was unhittable. And then that third
time through, I think they got after him a little
bit and knocked him around and then got him out
of the game and the Dodgers won. So you're right,
you know, And sometimes it could work in your favor
when you are so amped up because now you're overthrowing,
(17:14):
you're trying to do too much and not staying within yourself,
or it can work to your favor that I'm I'm
I'm in that zone because I'm at home and I'm
really amped up. So it's gonna it's not gonna be
in between. I'm gonna tell you that he's gonna either
be really good or he's gonna be a ratic. And
I'll say this.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
The last time he pitched here, and I don't know
if you remember this or not, you could see him
in the dugout as things. You could sense things were
gonna go awry. You could see him get visibly frustrated. Yeah,
I think he was upset, upset that it happened here,
upset that he pitched as well as he did. But
then all of a sudden things started to unravel for
him a little bit. That'll be interesting to see tonight too.
(17:53):
How composed will he be because Rodney, right, he grew
up for everybody he knows is gonna be here.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Mm hmmm mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yeah, I'm sure in his world, if things had worked
out differently, he'd be starting tonight for the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Oh yeah, without a doubt. That would have been a
dream for him.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Yeah, So it's going to mean a little more to
him tonight, and it'll be interesting to keep an eye
on him and see how he reacts. We mentioned the
fact that in Cincinnati they are thrilled beyond belief.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
They could not be any happier. This is great.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Every Francona did a magnificent job here. They are a
small market team, a mid market payroll against the gargantuan
goliath Dodgers, and they're thrilled. But it's a different story
here in La because getting here isn't what we are about.
It wasn't the objective when spring training opened. It's not
(18:47):
the objective tonight. So there's a difference. The Reds are
playing with house money. They're just happy to be here.
The Dodgers On the other hand, Rodney, this really is
now the first step in the quest when World Series.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Yeah, yeah, And I think the Dodgers are first of all,
they're they're healthy at the right time, and that that's
been the big question all season long. Would they have
a complete team that played together healthy for an extended
period of time, And they didn't have that until basically
what the last two three weeks of the season, right, So,
(19:21):
now that they're healthy and they've started to play well,
and we talked about this often. It's always droughout the season.
It was either the bullpen was bad or the Dodgers
couldn't hit, or but the starting pitching has been pretty
good most of the season, especially the second half of
the season. But now the Dodgers have started to hit
consistently up and down the lineup, and they're starting pitching
(19:43):
is good. Now the question is in the bullpen. Hold up, Fred,
and that's what we're going to find out. We are
live at Dodgers Stadium.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
We're here before anybody is here today, just soaking it
all in as we get ready for Game one of
the Wild Card. Don't forget three count them three pairs
of ch that we will be giving away between now
and two o'clock one for tonight's game, two for tomorrow
night's game. Fred Rogan Rodney Pete live from Dodger Stadium
on AM five to seventy LA Sports.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Oh yeah, that never gets old, right there, Welcome back.
We are live from Dodger Stadium many many, many many
hours before the game. But it's it still feels good
out here. A lot of guys walking around. Maintenance crew
is fixing the feel and it looks beautiful. But Fred,
(20:37):
before we get back into it, I just want to
you know, when you do these remotes, it takes a
lot of people to make this happen. Oh yeah, And
I want to give a shout out to our engineer,
Craig Robbins because it's his birthday tomorrow. Craig. Yes, our
man Craig who does all the behind the scenes work
and makes us sound good. Happy birthday, Craig. Yeah, Craig,
happy birthday.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
And fortunately for you, you will not be ejected from
the stadium and you will be able to celebrate your birthday.
Because there was an incident which occurred earlier which would
be defined as an HR violation in any business in America.
Craig works very hard and there's a lot of equipment
(21:18):
to set up. He gets here very early and we
all love him. But apparently Craig became a little overheated
during the setup of the equipment and he's a one
man band and decided to basically change his shirt in
front of everyone. This Now you know, Craig is a
(21:43):
lovely man, but this, certainly, if not an HR violation,
was something none of us needed to see.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
I will say that.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
But because no one was really in the stadium at
the time to go on reported and Craig will be
able to celebrate his birthday, I think a support.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
We point out Craig. Yes, Craig. At one point Craig
was considered it an Adonis Fred was that point today?
Definitely not today, But at one point in Craig's life
he would go to the beach and would get off
a lot of stairs. Yeah, today was a different type
(22:24):
of stairs.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
Happy birthday, Craig, Happy, happy birthday. All right, Clayton Kershaw Rodney,
let's just touch on this for for folks that aren't aware,
did not make the playoff roster and you're wondering to yourself, why, Well,
it's pretty simple. He's not going to pitch in this series.
He pitched Sunday. There's no way they were going to
use him in the series, so they figured, why should
(22:51):
we take up a spot.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
He'll be back in the division series. Yeah. Absolutely, there's
no reason to put him on the roster. He went
five I think he went five and a third on
some and so he was not going to pitch anyway.
So it allowed them to probably add Will Smith to
the roster just in case.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
Yeah, all right, again, the game is at six oh eight.
We're giving away three pairs of tickets, one for tonight,
two for tomorrow. We'll start doing that soon, so stay
with us. The playoffs are underway, and it's really interesting
if you remember before the season started, the Dodgers were
the Evil Empire.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
They were the bad guys.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
They spent all the money, and of course they were
supposed to just shell lack everybody. Well, the MAT's spent
a lot of money too, So it doesn't matter how
much money you spent.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
It's the way you put the team together.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
If your organization is constructed for sustained success, and the
Dodgers are. But there's a lot of talk and it's
from people that are jealous and owners that are jealous
that it is unfair for these big market teams to
spend all of this money.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Let's look at who's in the playoffs right now. Detroit
and Cleveland are playing.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Yeah, okay, Detroit is considered a big market, but it's
certainly not a top five market.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
No, no, they are. I'm looking at a list here,
Fred and the Detroit Tigers are seventeenth, ok on payroll,
so they would be a mid market franchise. Fair yeah, fair, Okay.
Cleveland is in there. Cleveland is in there, and Cleveland
is ranked twenty fifth in salary in salary, yeah okay,
and Cleveland is a mid market. Yep.
Speaker 1 (24:19):
San Diego is not a major market. It is not
a top five, top ten market. The Padres do spend money. Yes,
they're ranked ninth. Okay. The Cubs are a big market,
yes they are. Cobs and Padres are playing now. The
Padres have the lead in that game, and the Cubs
are tenth in payroll.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
All right.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
Boston is a top ten market. It is a big market,
and they spend money. That's right. Boston is twelve. Yankees
obviously would be market.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yep, twenty third for Cincinnati, I thought that's higher, and
I thought they would be I thought they they in
Pittsburgh would be last. Okay, And the Dodgers obviously first
in the second largest market. What do we say saying here, Yeah,
so Dodger and then you and the Brewers are aware,
and the Toronto Blue Jays are fifth, okay or not?
(25:08):
And so if you go all the way down the
the Milwaukee Brewers are twenty second in payroll. So what
does it say?
Speaker 1 (25:17):
Yes, it says if you have a lot of money,
and you spend the money correctly, you have an opportunity
to make the playoffs. The big markets are there, you
have an opportunity to make the playoffs if you spend
your money correctly. By the way, if you are spending
it correctly, you are built for sustained success, which the
Dodgers are lose a guy, there's three want to replace them, right,
(25:42):
That's how you build for sustained success. But when you
look at where some of the teams are payroll wise
and market size wise, it tells you, and I've always
said this, it's not how much money you spend, it's
how you spend your money. And if you have a
good organization and you develop your play, you can compete,
(26:02):
you can be here. Are the Reds gonna beat the Dodgers? No,
I'm sorry, I don't mean to jinx anybody. They're on
tee for it. Yeah, I guarantee it. They're not gonna
beat the Dodgers. But are they here? You're damn right
they are. Do I think the Brewers are gonna win
the National League?
Speaker 2 (26:18):
No? Are they good this year? Yes?
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Do I think the lights get a bit too bright
for them in the stage too large this go round? Yes,
but they're good and they're here Cleveland in the American League.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Could they make a run? I have to tell you,
I think they could. They got hot, they might have
been the hottest team. I think they could make a run.
And they're not spending a lot of money. No, they're not.
And that's what you I mean when you said that,
it's the specific word is sustained success. Next year, it's
(26:54):
gonna be some turnover. They're not gonna be able to
have that sustained success because they're not spending the right
way and they're gonna lose some guys. Yeah right, They're
gonna lose some guys in the off season. So to
do it year in a year out like the Dodgers
have done the Yankees have done. Uh, it's it's because
they spend in the right way the Angels. Angels are
(27:15):
right between the Red Sox and the Cubs, and they
don't invest in certain things like their farm system and
bringing guys up. The most disappointing team, obviously is the Mets,
who spend a lot of money. They're second to the Dodgers,
and they didn't even make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
Because they don't have the system and play ship. They
haven't an own or that wants to win. And he'll
sixty million dollars on one Soto that is not going
to win, might put people in the stands. He might
have a good year. You're not winning that way. One
Soto is the final piece of a puzzle.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
What was it? What was the what was the number
that the Yankees offered him. Wasn't there like a five
hundred million dollars numbers?
Speaker 3 (27:54):
No?
Speaker 2 (27:55):
I think it was more Rodney was it more?
Speaker 1 (27:56):
I think that Soto got another year which went to
more money.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
I believe Kevin's looking it up.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
Yeah, so they offered him, they offered him a sixteen
years seven.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
Sixty the Yankees did.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Yeah, the Mets signed him to fifteen years, seven sixty five.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
So that was it.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Yeah, So I mean they went for it. Now, Oh yeah,
the Yankees have a legitimate shot. The Mets are building,
and the Mets are gonna lose Peter a Lonzo, So how.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Does that work. I'm just saying, if you're the Yankees, Yeah,
and if if I got to pick a guy, I'm
picking Air and Judge every day of the week and
twice on Sundays over Wan Soto. Right. If Aaron Judge
is a five hundred million dollar guys, if you're gonna
pay Juan Soto two hundred more million dollars more than
Aaron Judge, maybe it came down to average per year. Yeah, still,
(28:50):
but baseball is guarantee. Yeah, I mean, but he may.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
He means more to the Yankees, a team that could
win than the Mets that is building.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
He means more to the Yankees.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
And that's why signing him as the Mets did for
that money good for Juan Soto, But it was a
bad business deal. It was a bad deal when the
owner has to sit there and apologize and say we're
not going to tolerate this. And by the way, that
guy's not tolerating anything. No, he's in it to win it.
I wouldn't be people are going to get it because.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
As I always say, somebody's always gonna get You're gonna
think they're gonna get it right. You think the Mets
are going to look at teams like the Phillies, the Dodgers,
even the Padres they're built there. I mean, you got
to be impressed with the Padres they have built for
They are built for sustained success. Now they have done
it the right way for the last five six years
they've been in the mix. So you got to give
(29:44):
it up to the Padres. But can the Mets get there?
Are they going to look to the formula the way
the Dodgers do A guy like Andrew Freeman, this is
how you do it. I think Cohen is going to
investigate anywhere and everywhere he can to find the formula
that works for the Dodgers, the Phillies, the pod and
what they're doing to be able to develop that sustained
success that we're talking about. The reason the.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Dodgers are where they're at is when they made the
decision to bring Andrew Friedman in they didn't hire one guy.
They hired a guy with a system. They hired a
guy with a plan.
Speaker 2 (30:17):
They didn't hire a guy and say, Okay, somebody that
understands how to build a successful program. Somebody that knows
what it takes every step of the way from rookie
ball to the big leagues, scouting, minor league development, nutrition
for the minor leaguers, everything the Dodgers do. Andrew Friedman
(30:42):
was the guy that basically created all of that when
he was in Tampa. He created the model for it.
So when they hired Andrew Friedman, they hired the mastermind
and how to build something. They didn't hire a GM
to go out and sign players. Andrew Friedman's success.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Here and it makes complete and total sense because he
did exactly hear what he had done in Tampa, except.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Here he had resources.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
So what he did in Tampa, he now has thirty
five times more money.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Here than he had in Tampa. But he built it
the exact same way Rodney from the farm system and
development in the front office.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
That's why they're successful. If you want to win, you
have to invest in that. You have to invest in
the system and the person that can operate the system.
You have to invest in a front office, you have
to invest in your minor league system.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
You know, we read this week.
Speaker 1 (31:39):
I think Bill Shakin wrote it, Kevin that Ardi Moreno
actually called Andrew Friedman and asked if you wanted to
be the general manager of the Angels when he.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
Was in Tampa. Yeah, certainly not since he's been with
the Dodgers. He didn't call, right, but yeah, when he
was in Tampa. Yeah, okay, that surprised me. That a
lot of teams probably that's very long. It might have
been one of these.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Ardy Moreno, Hey, just wondering, Andrew, you want to come
and be the GM of the andl I got another call.
I gotta jump. I'm not even gonna let it finish it.
You can't even say another word because for me to
come there, the expense is enormous and it's not just
for me, it's for everything.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Just think about the Dodgers today, right there are two catchers,
I mean Will Smith is probably gonna not play, but
came up through the system and they brought brought them
both up during the during the regular season when they
needed them, and both of them are now gonna be
playing in in the playoffs and play in a pivotal
(32:44):
role for the Dodgers. Not every team can say that, well,
not every team can do this, and this is the
thing that Dodgers do. And by the way, I just
need to point this out real quickly then I'll finish.
If you now look to your left, Rodney, Uh, there
are people painting the stadium as we're here. There are
people actually painting. They want this thing to look so
fresh tonight. There are people painting the stadium, the inside
(33:07):
of the stadium as we are sitting here.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
They have not come to where we're at yet. But
now that's the set. Yeah, or somebody's gonna be feeling
pretty good during the game that get to them. I'm
telling you you've got two guys now that they can
win World Series rings. And to think about the Dodgers.
And as you listen, you tell me if this is true.
(33:32):
We watch every game, and I'm sure you watch the
majority of them or listen to them here on the
radio station. All of a sudden, somebody will go into
the game and it doesn't matter. At any point, somebody
could be in the game. It could happen in the
Division series. Who knows somebody will be on the roster
and you go, who is that? Where did that person
(33:53):
come from? They are so deep throughout the organization and
so structured in what they do. Who was your boy
that came up here and played third base for a
while when.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Months he was hurt? Oh you loved him? Yeah? I can't.
I can't remember now.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
I can't remember his name. Yeah, he must have played
twenty games. Yeah he did, played third base, played second base.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Help me help me with that. I can't. I can't remember.
Was it Buddy Kennedy? And I don't think he played. No, no, no,
the other guy.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
No, no, Buddy Kennedy was there like three minutes.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Right, that's what I thought you were talking about. He
played like two innings, right, all of.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
A sudden, starting at third base. Buddy Kennedy. Who's Buddy Kennedy?
Where did he come from? And they put him in
positions that matter in big games? Yeah, and big games.
So that's why the Dodgers are so successful. All right,
you know what, we gotta give tickets away enough. Come on,
let's do it enough. You want to get him for
tomorrow or tonight, Kevin?
Speaker 2 (34:46):
Which one? Let's do tonight?
Speaker 3 (34:47):
So people have time to figure out what they want to,
you know, get their logistics in order so they can
get here in time.
Speaker 2 (34:51):

Yeah? Stay in a pump?
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (36:25):
You like that. For those of you who don't know,
the Pumps are well known in southern California, a very
big in uh charity. Wow.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
They have a major event every year and they are
redheaded twins. The Pumps then went to Run Out of
Hills High School. Anybody, everybody in sports knows.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
The Pumps, but don't know how they know them. Isn't
that a damn truth? Nobody knows how they met the Pumps,
but they know the Pumps, and they, like you said,
they do a lot for the community here and active
in sports and philanthropy and entertainment and all of those things.
Dana and David Pump. Why did you single out David? Why?
Why did David have to take you? Why? Why not? Dana?
(37:06):
I don't know why one of them not anymore. You're
out to think about the pumps.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Let me let me say this. If you turn around,
the pumps are Rob Polenka. If you turn their standing
right behind you.
Speaker 3 (37:22):
You go to an important event, an important sporting event
in Los Angeles, the pumps will be there.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
It is don't you don't And they're always standing next
to whoever is being It doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
They're they're event every year.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
They bring the biggest names in sports in Rodney every
year and have this major gala uh and raise money
for I believe, the cancer center in north Ridge, which.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
Is named after their mother and father. The mother and father.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
Yeah yeah, So the pumps all right as we continue
here from Dodger Stadium. Oh, by the way, congratulations to whoever.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
Won those tickets. We'll see you here tonight. Who wanted
Noah's is Noah? Noah? Noah. You're welcome, Okay, Noah. That's
the kind of guys.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
We are, and you will have a chance next hour
two more people to win tickets for tomorrow nights game,
because that's where we are as well. So what's going
on right now at Dodger Stadium To our left, the
gentleman is still painting. This guy's like Picasso. He is
painting the walls here at Dodger Stadium. So this is
going to be great tonight. And if you go down
(38:32):
into the field, the Reds is now starting to slowly assemble.
They brought the pitching machine out there. The batting cage
is up and there are three of them standing basically
staring at the pitching machine.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
Yes, one of them is tossing a football back. Yeah,
that's the usual routine of the pitchers. Throwing a football
is very similar to throwing a slider, and so a
lot of teams, most teams, I think every team has
a bunch of footballs that the pitchers will will throw
just to kind of get the form and the release,
because it's exactly the same as throwing a slider. I
(39:06):
remember that. It's funny because I transitioning from football to baseball. Yeah,
and I played third base at USC and for the
first month of the baseball season, the first baseman used
to hate me because every ball I threw the first
base was a slider until I kind of got my
mind around throwing a baseball again. But it was just
(39:28):
naturally to throw the football because I did it for
six months and then transition to baseball. But yeah, they
hated me.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
See what I'd like to see, and I don't know
if we'll have a chance obviously because we're out of
here at too when Petros and Money take over. But
what i'd like to see is Jiama Model come out
and start throwing that job.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
And then maybe stick one of the retch Fred, what's
wrong with you? Yeah? No, no, I'm not saying you
call out the pumps now you want somebody to get
hit with a javelin.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
I'm not saying I want anybody seriously hurt, But I
just think maybe in the leg would be great.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Wow, any other thing? Does he actually throw the javelin
before he pitches, like on the field. I've not been
early enough to see that. Does he do that or
field with the trainer? During we were here for was
it opening day last year?
Speaker 3 (40:13):
I believe we were on the field the Petrols and
Matt and we saw him walk out here with with
his assistant or trainer or whoever it was, with the javelin.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
So yeah, okay, absolutely will work out with it before games. Yeah,
maybe we'll see it tomorrow. Fritt, Oh, yeah, I'd love
to see that. Uh, also Tim Kates, Thank you, Tim.
Alex Freeland was the man we were trying ppects. That's right,
thank you, Kattie. I knew you know it? Yeah I did.
I did. I liked his attitude. I liked the grit.
I liked him. I liked him a lot.
Speaker 1 (40:41):
The only other thing that could happen here before we
go to break and come back next hour, we may
have Andrew Friedman on we're working on it still it yeah, okay,
we may have Andrew Friedman. The only other thing, and
it's getting pretty close.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (40:53):
The Dodger crew is out there, and this is what
I want to see. They're watering the dirt on the infield.
If they that guy just turns that hose a little
bit to his right, he is going to spray the
Reds and that would be the best.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
You see how close he is, Tom Rodney, I do
what is what's going on with you? Rance? I'm glad
we're not on the field. Fred will get us thrown
out of here. You got that right? Here's the thing
wants to spray him with water, and it's it's it's amazing.
This is the playoffs, all right, it's amazing. Well, first
(41:26):
of all. It's amazing how often that they water this field.
But the dirt and the grass, I mean they do
it during the game. They do it, you know, pregame, postgame.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
They've bet it three times since we've been saying no,
they watered the hell out of that dirt.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Well, you know the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
The thing about it is camel Back Ranch, and I'm
sure here and for those of you that partake in this,
they have the best grass.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Yes, there is no question camel Back Ranch.
Speaker 1 (41:52):
If you went there during spring training and you laid
down on that grass, I am telling you you would
not get up.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
It is heaven. Look at is the Dodger over there
laying on the grass right now? Oh yeah, yeah, I
don't know who that is. But somebody came out with
the shoes off and the shorts and he's taken in
the sun and the grass. Yeah it's beautiful. Yeah, you
don't want to get up it is. It is like you.
I wish you had it at home. Oh yes, like that.
Who is that laying out there? Who is out there?
(42:22):
He's like he's at the beach.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
I'm telling you, he's got his arms spread, his legs spread.
Speaker 3 (42:28):
But you know what, maybe Andrew Freeman can tell us
that he's going to join us at one thirty. We
can ask him who was the Dodger who lays out
there on the grass before games and it just soaks
it all in.
Speaker 2 (42:35):
Oh wait a minute, I know why he's coming at
one thirty. Why is that? Because that is Andrew free
all right.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
We have two pairs of tickets to give away. We're
gonna do it in the upcoming hour when we come back.
What does momentum mean? Is it a good thing or
a bad thing to be in the wild Card as
we can continue live from Dodger Stadium. Fred Rogan Rodney
pint at a five seventy LA Sports
