Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Talking the Town on news radio with thirteen hundred
and one oh six nine FM Steve Kelly, Brett, Pikita,
Lauren Smith from West Michigan's Morning News, joined by Brian
Hebermier av Herman's Boy to talk about a couple of things,
including Gorilla Palooza, which is Saturday the seventeenth. Thank you
Brian so much for joining us today.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
I get to ask the first questions as the jeep
guy because you will start this big event at Graft
Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Rockford. It's the fourth annual
Jeep Go Topless Day that then rolls into our friends
at Herman's Boy. And this is a big party and
fundraiser for the Cross Memorial Library expansion. Tell us a
(00:41):
little bit more about that.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yes, so this is our second year teaming up with
Draft Motors. They've done it at their location the same date.
I think grant Haven has one as well, but this
is for a smaller thing through us. The Cross Memorial
is going through a big renovation, big expansion, and every
year we've always tried, all through the years of Grill Pluza,
(01:06):
we've tried to do a charity, a fundraiser, help out.
It's just a good way since it's a community event.
And last year we did an event for a dog rescue,
and this year we're going to do it through the
Cross Memorial. Both motors and US are doing our own things.
Graph Motors is actually going to offer a link on
their page. When you buy a car, they're going to
(01:27):
donate a percentage of the sale, and then we are
going to donate a green egg to them for a
raffle later in the year. So it's a great way
for the community to come out enjoy. Jeeps are a
big part of my life. I love every I'm almost
ready to get mine out because I don't drive it
without the top off.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
We love that.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
It's kind of my treat to myself, my wife and
I and my kids. It's the one way to still
get my kids with me go on a jeep.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Right, you know this is great This year we actually,
just a few days ago went on a field trip
with my son to Krass Memorial Library, so I got
to see firsthand the really incredible plans they have and
to me, nothing fundraise is better than delicious food. Let's
talk about what kind of stuff we're grilling up for Grillapalooza, right.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
So, I mean the big emphasis has always been for
grilla b loses the big Green Egg. We grill here
every day on the Green Egg and we sell them.
But we are one of the only places in Michigan
that has a restaurant affiliation with them. That means we
do quite a bit of our product on the Green Egg.
We do pulled pork on it. We grilled chicken on it. People.
(02:38):
That was amazing how much just small pieces of chicken
breast we sell every day grilled on the Green Egg
because it's just a different way of grilling, the moisture
content so high. So what we're going to emphasize though,
is our graduation stuff, what people might be able to
get for graduation parties, like the pulled port, like our
sides of the macaroni and cheese and coast law, and
(02:58):
then some of the other stuff that are seasonings that
we do. But everything is going to be on the
grilled grilled on the Green egg, even like our are
we're starting to do take and baked specials, meatballs grilled
on the egg. We did. We did street corn for that.
You guys were asking earlier for for a Sinkle.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
De mile nobody that.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
I know we got. We got to put some side
for you. But that corn is grilled on on the
green egg the case though we do the treeso and
the bell peppers on the egg and then we combined
it with the other stuff we found through the years,
not put everything on the egg, but put small parts
in it and then mix it with non grilled air
things so that the flavor comes out a little better.
(03:39):
But that's what we're going to emphasize. And it's all free.
Samples are free. It's just donating in the Cross Memorial
will be here accepting things through the day. They'll have
donation areas, they're going to sell books, things like that.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Brian he Meyers joined us here on the top of
the town Herman's Boy. They got grill up Losa coming
up this Saturday. And Brian, you touched on something I
think people forget about, and that is the catering aspect,
whether it's a grad party coming up, whether it's a
family picnic. I know ginger Z knew your dad and
she had at a wedding. She insisted on bagel dogs.
I mean, you guys really do a great job, but
(04:16):
people forget about that aspect. I'd love to have bagel
dogs if I rethink it for my old grand party
back in the day.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, with us being more of
a grocery store, we have to limit what we can do,
so the graduation party is one way where we can
get it out more of the stuff that we do here.
But yeah, the pulled pork, it's a real economical way
to feed a lot of people. We sell our pork
(04:43):
at nine to ninety five and you can get easily
between six to ten servings out of a pound of pork.
Couple that with using smaller roles where we kind of
advise that. But it's a nice economical way to feed
a lot of people. And through the years of having
the egg and having parties of my own, I would
try to do something fancy for people or do something different,
(05:04):
and it was consistently going back that they were disappointed
that there was no pull fork. So I gave up
and that's what I serve. And it's so easy to
do reheat. You can take a container home from here
even without a graduation party. We have the containers and
you have an easy meal for your family. Throughout the week.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
It is Herman's Boy by the way Old Northland Drive
in Rockford. You hear us talk about it being the
official coffee of West Michigan's Morning News. We kind of
got a touch on there before we talk about the
giveaway for Father's Day of the Big Green Egg. You'll
have a chance to win one of these things. You
don't have to sell us on coffees and teas and
the roastery that you've had there since in sinception, but
(05:42):
tell us a little bit about some of those options
that are available.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, so we roast on premises. We've been roasting through
our family since around nineteen eighty one. My father and
brothers started the businesses in seventy nine, and we're buying
from the coffee ranch which was downtown Grand Rapids. We
roast here every day. Our goal is a product will
be only forty eight hours from the roaster out the door.
We do regular roasts. We have all the dark roasts.
(06:07):
We have a ton of flavored coffees. And the best
thing about us right now, and one thing that we
pride ourselves is you can still get All of our
prices are sixteen ounce bags. We average only fifteen dollars
for those bags, and on the average right now, if
you go to the markets, you can see most bags
are around twelve ounces and they're around twenty dollars. So
our goal from my dad's inception of the business, his
(06:31):
business philosophy was a quality product at a quality price.
And then on five pound owners, we discount another ten percent.
So it's a fresh product. You can't beat the freshness,
the quality. Jeff does all the ordering and there is
only one thing that we want is the highest quality.
And then served you fresh that I can't say fresh enough.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Family owned and operated. They're celebrating forty five years in
business now, have moved out of downtown rock for to
the farmhouse just out there on Old North and Drive.
And let's wrap up with what Steve mentioned earlier, Brian,
and that is and thank you again because you've been
doing this for years with us. We are happy to
announce we're putting together another big package for our Father's
Day giveaway. But it all starts with you guys with
(07:15):
the large green egg and stand that we're going to
give away.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
That's right, Yeah, a large green egg that's big enough
for any family. In fact, the family with serving I
always say you can feed up to twenty to twenty
twenty to thirty people on an egg without much effort,
So that's an easy, perfect size. It's what we sell
the most of and as far with dealing with you,
there's probably no other place that we've ever dealt with
(07:38):
any other advertising that has yielded more from your listeners.
All that has just been a great relationship. So it's
our pleasures to take.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Part in it next Saturday, the seventeenth Grillapalooza. Stop buy
Old Northland Drive in Rockford de Herman's Boy anytime and
get ready for Father's Day to send in your email
as well. But Brian Habermin, we're out of time. We're
getting to the carl going to Herman's Boy.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, we're here, We're here.
