Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Talk of the Town on news radio Wind thirteen
hundred and one oh six nine F M. Brett Pikita
and Steve Kelly from West Michigan's Morning News. A nationally
recognized leader and end of life care, Hospice of Michigan
is the original and largest hospice in the state, and
a great fundraiser is coming up once again Barley Barbecue
and Beats to talk about that in Grand Rapids. The
(00:22):
Associate vice president of Philanthropy of Hospice of Michigan, Barbara Anderson,
thanks for doing this.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Today, Thanks for having me absolutely.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
The event is next Saturday, five to nine at GLC
Live at twenty Monroe. We'll get into some of the details,
but talk to us a little first and foremost a
little bit about what it is that Hospice of Michigan does.
A founding member of the north Star Care Community, it's
a non for profit. That's important to point out when
it comes to hospice.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Too, right, Yeah, absolutely, so we are in the community.
We are not here to return money to shareholders, but
we are here to care for patients and families that
are in our communities. And really the fundraising the important
part of events. Like this is that we do that
regardless of a patient's age, diagnosis, and their ability to pay.
(01:12):
So we do not believe in sending those folks who are,
you know, on their end of life journey a bill
or giving caregivers something more to worry about at that time.
And we come in as clinicians, as social workers, as chaplains,
with a cocoon of care for whatever their end of
life's journey might look like.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Well, and Barbara, unfortunately I can attest to this. In
last year alone, we had to use the services of
hospice three different times for relatives. And I know, Steve
you speak highly of it as well. And I guess
my question then around that is we're always talking about
the need is more right now, whether it's Kids' Food
Basket or other nonprofits we're talking about, but I can
(01:54):
imagine with hospice in the baby boom generation, Unfortunately, the
reality is you guys are being needed much more right.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Oh, yes, absolutely, I mean as our folks in our
communities age, this is definitely a factor of life that
pretty much everyone is going to encounter, whether it's you
yourself as a patient eventually or you know you have
a loved one that benefits from our care, so.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Absolutely so to help with that mission. This coming Saturday
five to nine at GLC Live at twenty inn Row,
Barley Barbecues and Beats is returning to Grand Rapids, but
for its final year two. We should point that out,
so if you've always wanted to be a part of it,
now is the time. Tell us about what we can expect.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
I think we're going out on a high note. We're
very excited. We've got ten distilleries joining us this year,
many of them who have been with us for actually
ten years since the very beginning. So great great lineup
of both whiskey based tacktails and mocktails for those that
are inclined, great lineup of barbecue, including very well received
(03:01):
vegan barbecue specialty, so for anybody who's not into the meat,
that's an option. And then of course the Beats. Everybody
knows great local band Brenna is going to be headlining
for us, So folks can come sixty five dollars in
advance if they want to wait till day of and
take their chances, it's seventy five at the door, but
(03:21):
they get three tokens for barbecue tasting. Of their choice,
and then three tokens for crash cocktails of their choice,
and then if those are all gone and they still
want more, we have some options to purchase more.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
That is five to nine this coming Saturday, GLC Live
twenty mon Row and Barbara, kudos to you and everyone
at hospice because this was kind of the signature event
that you started with, and because it's been so successful
and popular, you've taken this around the state.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Haven't you. We have. Yeah, we started here ten years
ago and we've since been able to expand we have
one of these in Detroit, we have one in ann
Arbor rather City Alpina. So as much as we would
love folks to join us in Grand Rapids on May seventeen,
if they cannot, then we probably have another location for
them throughout the year. So they should just check.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Out the website for the event and to find out more.
Hom dot org slash BBB. For those that would like
to donate during the event, you have an opportunity to
double your contribution thanks to the Steven Amy Vanandel Foundation.
Tell us a little about that.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, super blessed to have Steven Amy supporting this. Yet again,
we call their their gift the make it a double
so a little bit of play there. But yeah, so
for that evening they are matching gifts that are made
that night. And then for anybody who's giving at least
a fifty dollars donation, we have our signature event t
shirts that are always really well received for that donation.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
So I love the fact too that it's all Michigan based,
right that you're tying into. I mean, whether it's the
barbecue places, American char is kind of down by my
neck of the woods there environ sent or the distilleries
or the craft brews and everything, right, it's this is
this is prideful Michigan we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
We definitely like to elevate our Michigan made stuff absolutely again.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
You can find out more about tickets andthevent at hom
