Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Talk of the Town, a news radio with
thirteen hundred and one oh six nine FM Steve Kelly
and Brett Pikita. And joining us in studio is Mike Lang,
the director of Mobby Noess. I loved the title. Mike,
thanks for coming.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
In, Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Let's talk about the Mobby brand out of Sutton's Bay.
You may have seen the sparkling beverage called Sex. There
is now a non alcoholic Safe Sex, which I think
is awesome as somebody in the recovery community. But Mike
talked to us a little bit about the some fifty
year tradition of this wine maker up north.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, well, Lailey Mobby planted vines in nineteen seventy three
and started experimenting with bottle fermented bubbly so method Champinnois
style sparkling wines in the mid eighties, and then about
a decade later, decided that Mobby would focus on sparkling
wine production exclusively. It gave us a focus, and since
then the late nineties, we've been an all sparkling wine
(01:01):
and not until recently, with the addition of Safe Sex,
did we enter the non alcoholic realm. This is a
growing category in the beverage space, and we are a
celebratory brand obviously we make Bubbly, So we're trying to
provide an option for people that don't drink, or people
that are taking a break, or pregnant women or whatever
(01:26):
an occasion. We wanted to develop an option for everybody
to enjoy and to be able to pop open and
celebrate together.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
And we've talked about that topic on our morning news
show and Steve is a recovering alcoholic and is now
on that mission. And you know, it was amazing to
me and we went through this and we were talking
about it that that is such a growing cell. You know,
we just had down here the wine, beer and food
festival that we have every year, and that was one
of the categories they talked about where they've seen a
(01:55):
lot of growth with vendors going with a non alcoholic.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
It is a growing category and we yeah, I mean
we wanted to enter that category. So like five years ago,
you know, Seltzer's were big, and now non alcoholics big.
I think this is here to stay. I think that
people are drinking more responsibly, people are drinking less frankly,
(02:19):
and wine itself is in a correction phase. You know,
they're ripping out a lot of vineyards in Europe. In
California we had a big boom during COVID. We're kind
of like recoiling here a little bit and resetting. That's typical.
I mean most industries go through cycles like that. We're
in a bit of a correction phase for wine. But
we wanted to really take advantage of this category and
(02:40):
put our own stamp on it, and so we went
through as we do with most new products. We went
through a lot of trial, a lot of tasting, a
lot of back and forth, a lot of recipe development
to end up where we ended up. And we've got
a product that tastes similar to the version set to
sex that contains alcohol, but it's not exactly the same,
but it's unique in its own way.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
So Mike, by the label, I guess we have to
say there is a certain amount of alcohol that's part
of this process.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Right. We had the alcohol tests that on this it
does have point zero five percent. That's probably less than
the kombucha if you drink that.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Maybe this is a little inside baseball, but people say
champagne and you say sparkling wine, that's a grape thing.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Right, that's a location thing. Yeah, so we can't call
sparkling wine from this country champagne because it's the grapes
weren't sourced from that region. They have a lot of
regulatory standards and they've branded that region and we can't
use that. Core Bell uses that term because I think
(03:42):
they were kind of grandfathered in. They're an older winery
out in California. Yeah, they use champagne on their label,
but I don't know of any other domestic producer that does.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Obviously you're in the Mitten State, but you're all over
the place. Talk about where people can find you and
get this great product.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
So right now, this is with independent retailers, not chains.
We wanted to start to get a feel for the market.
So anywhere you find our products at your corner store
or you know, if you see Mobby products, you can
ask them to carry this. If they don't, say, you know,
approach the bever Stewart. We'd like to have some safe
sex here. They'll order it for you. Or go to
(04:20):
Mobby dot Wine on our website, or come visit the
tasting room and we're going to try to enter chains
like Meyer, Kroger, et cetera. In the fall.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Where in Sutton's are you? If I'm planning a little
trip to maybe stop by that tasting.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Room Sutton's Bay. We're about four or five miles south
of the booming metropolis of Sutton's Bay, Michigan, about twelve
miles north of Traverse City, so way.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
In between the two in between. You're going to be
traveling anyway, you might as well swing on in and sample.
So what other So we talked about sex and safe sex.
What our offerings are there.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
We have twenty different sparkling wines and we also have
Big Little Wines which is right next door that has
non sparkle options, so you can hit one property and
try sparkling non sparkling. We have it all, but Mobby
makes a variety of sparkling products something for everybody.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
And love the fact that you can join the Fizz Club.
Tell us about the Fizz Club.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
The Fizz Club is a twice a year, six bottle shipment.
That's the minimum commitment and you can totally customize your order,
which is pretty cool. So we suggest six wines twice
a year, but you can swap things out. You can
you know, if you don't, if you know you don't
like a wine, you can swap it out for a
wine that you know you like. And they get phizz
(05:34):
club members we call bubbleheads. They get benefits on property
as well. And I love the names to the nice
and simple. We got Detroit, you got Grace right. You
can try them all and there's your six wines. Absolutely.
Absolutely Detroit was popular most recently with the Lions in
the Detroit area. All across the state. There was a buzz,
wasn't there? But as it were?
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah, Mobby dot wine dot com for more information, swing
by next time you are in. Sutton's director of mobbiness
is Mike Lang. Great stuff, Thank you so much for
coming in today.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Thank you, yeah, Mobby dot wine.
