weekly visit with area high school football coaches and players,
brought to you by Sports Play and ninety six one
the Game. The Fox Motors Big Skin Party is brought
to you by the Fox Motor Group. Now from the
showroom floor of Fox Motors, here's your host.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Brick Burky, and welcome to the Fox Motors Pig Skin Party,
coming to you live from fox Ford on twenty eighth Street.
We'll be here for the next hour talking high school
football the East cant What Falcons are our special guest,
coach Tyron Spencer and his Falcons will be joining us
on the air to talk a little bit about their
fine season they're having and they're off to a good
one right now, four and one on the season, just

(00:39):
one blemish on the mark so far, and it'll look
forward to getting another one this week when they are
at home against West Ottawa. We're gonna talk on a number
of things about that. We're gonna run down well we've
got coming up this week in our high school coverage
this Friday night, Week six, believe it or not, when
we get through Friday Night, will be two thirds of
the way through the regular season. We've got play by
play games. We got game reporters going out and about

(01:01):
to different games, do reports before, during, and after, in
our pregame, halftime, in postgame scoreboard shows. Those are all
coming up. We'll have rundown of all of our coverage
for you. But we are at fox Ford on twenty
eighth Street. Actually you kind of run between twenty eighth
and twenty ninth both, don't you.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
We cover all the real estate down here.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
You can go one there, you go on the front end,
it's off of twenty eighth. You go in the back
end off of twenty ninth Street. But it's a massive
area here, and fox Ford is a wonderful host for
our show. Steve Winters, the veteran general manager, veteran I
like that of Yes, Fox Motors here joins us right now,
and I know you're excited to have the Falcons in
here and talk a little high school football.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
It's great to see these young men out here, and
it's it's great that we have the opportunity to support
them and help them and whatever we can do, we're
behind them.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Steve, it just seems like a few years ago I
was talking with you on the air here and about
electric vehicles when they were the new thing, you know,
there was what's coming on and now it seem to
really be kicking in.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Well they're kicking in.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
You know.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
You don't have the support as much from the government
and some of the infrastructure out there, but eves as
far as vehicles in the future, they're here to stay.
Ford is really committed. They've got some great product coming
down the line. We still sell our Machi which is
just an awesome sport utility R F one fifty. We
have vans. Again, We're still committed Ford Is you get

(02:26):
an EV, they'll even have someone come out and put
a charger at your home, so it's called Ford Promise.
They take care of it for.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Well, that's great, they'll put it right in at your
home for it. What are some of the most common
questions people talk when they're considering an EV steve.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Most of them is what's called range anxiety. They worry
about that. They also look at well how do I
how do I do and deal with all this technology
and charging at the home and the staff here we train,
we really train hard because we want to make sure
that we have all the information for our customers that
we can answer all your quot russ And you know,

(03:01):
it's exciting when someone comes in and they've been to
five other dealerships and they said, I can somebody just
explain how an EV works to us, And I'm like,
we got the team for you. So they do a
great job.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Boy. There's so many vehicles that Ford puts out on
such a quality basis, but one of the main lines,
one of the cornerstones Afford is the F one fifty.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Oh it's our truck forty eight years and is it really?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
It's going on fifty years. They must have a special
celebration lineup for fifty coming up.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
I bet they.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Will because they're still leading this year, so it'll be
another one on top of it.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
So what makes it a leading seller still, Steve.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Well, nice thing is that's so flexible. You can get
EV in the F one fifty. You can get an
electric vehicle there, you can get a hybrid gas or
you can just get a gas vehicle, a nice vehicle
as they call it, So the options are there. It's
a great vehicle, it rides really well, and most importantly,
it's a truck that gets things done.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
It's a.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
It's a great work truck.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
I mentioned the complex here and it is a complex
because you've had a whole entire commercial center. Also in
addition to the retail here.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yes, with all the f one, fifties, two fifties, three
fifties box vans. We sell just about everything here while
you have to service them. And it's a very important
part of the business right now because so important for
fleets and businesses to get their vehicles in here. You
have a quick turnaround town so that they can get
back on the road. So it's all about turnaround, it's

(04:28):
all about having technicians, a great facility. We got fifty
thousand square foot facility that we just added the spring boy,
can we turn some business in there?

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I know I'm familiar with that. Steve Scheffler, your guy
has got my wife with kids, food basket, a couple
of vans and they've been great, great service for him
as well. Yes, all right. The Ford Adventure Performance that's
an award right Well.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
It's a whole thing that Ford's working on. They talk
about readyset Ford and it's about all our vehicles. We
talk about Adventure. They're exciting. You've got the Ford Bronco
series of the family. You've got performance with the Mustangs
and the Evs and then what back to what we
talked about the commercial vehicles. We have the vehicles that

(05:12):
can get the work done. So Ford just about covers
everything and that's what our consumers are looking for.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Steve Winners, thanks so much for joining us. Thanks for
hosting the Falcons here. They're on their way over from
practice right now. You've got pizzas form by enough though,
you got to hold pizza for each of them, so
I hope they're hungry and they will be hungry they
show up. Thanks again for hosting. Steve.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
All right, thank you Rick.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
All right, we want to know you that we let
you know that we are truly excited here at ninety

from last Friday night, bringing our total to over three
three hundred dollars already this year going to Kids Food

to watch that. They'll continue to grow throughout every Friday

going this week to these games that you will hear
reports on throughout Friday night. Lowell at Kenawa Hills. That
should be a big game in the River City's Alliance Conference.

(08:51):
Holland Christian at East Grand Rapids. Good match up there,
both one and one in conference play. Jennison and Granville,
two neighborhood rivals that really seem to play over their
head when they're playing each other. Oakridge at Whitehall that's
our Lake Shore Spotlight game with Scott DeCamp. That's a
great game over in the West Michigan Lakes concert with
the Conference with oak Ridge at two and one in
conference play, Whitehall with a two and oh league play,

(09:15):
and Unity Christian at Zealand West. So a great match
up there. Both teams are two and oh in league
play and five and oh overall. Unity is and Zealand
West just four and one on the year, so that's
really a great matchup there. Also, we'll have reports on
four Sills Northern at Reees, Puffer pregame and scoreboard show
on that one. Good matchup there. Both those teams are
one and one in conference play. Of course, in addition

(09:35):
to that, in our show, we will have a pregame
show feature thoughts before the kickoff with Bill Rowney always
takes an interesting perspective on the game, an element of
the game that maybe you hadn't thought much about. And
then of course Gino's gems with Buck Gina. With all
our games, with all our reporters going everywhere, there's always
a few games that we that deserve a spot like

(09:57):

Voters Fixed Again party rolls on live from fox Ford.
On twenty eighth, we check out the f one fifth

(11:00):
that always big hit and as Steve Winners told us
earlier tonight, three different kinds. I have one fifties you
can now get yourself into no matter what your preference
is and how you want that motors. But anyway, we're
going to talk high school football now. These can'tain Falcons
are special guests tonight. Tyrone Spencer, second year head coach, Ty,
thanks for joining us out here at football for Monday,

(11:20):
not a football Friday. But it's great seeing you again.

Speaker 4 (11:22):
Thanks for having me appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Off to a good start two and one in the league,
play four and one overall. Certain you'd rather have won
them all, but you guys are playing well.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Yeah we are. We are. We have a great group
of young men and we're just trying to get better
every week.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
You know, I see that. Statistically, it jumps right out
at you. First of all, you're one of the top
scoring teams, if not one of the very elite teams
in the area at forty points again just under forty
points a game and giving up just eleven on defense.
So both sides of the ball doing their job.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, yeah, it's uh, you know, we just really preach
execution at its high as level as much as possible
and just trying to be detailed. And so you know,
the guys, I've been doing great and we just have
to continue to, uh to get better, fine tuned and
and and see how far we can go.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
Coming off last year five and four made it to
the playoffs and and and gave Hudsonville, who eventually won
the state champion. Yeah, gave them probably their toughest game
of the entire tournament. That had to be. That had
you a little bit impetus for this year, didn't.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
Yeah that that that was kind of the uh the
I think the kids started to believe at the end
of the season and uh, you know that that was
kind of some motivation as we got into the off
season and and started off well. So, uh, that definitely
was kind of the fuel or fire starter to this.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Well, you got off the with a nice win over
Southfield forty three to eight, and then you beat Byron
Center another non conference game forty three to fourteen. So
that had to be a good sign for you right away.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Yeah, yeah, right away. We thought we took care of
business and you know, you know some things that we
still have to get done. We still have to start
faster and uh, offensively and defensively, but that those are
the things that we're going to focus on and work
on and uh. But we've been healthy and we're going
to continue to try to get to get healthy, get
some more kids back and that'll help us out too.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Boy, I tell you what you know. I we had
Rockford on earlier and year we're gonna have Hudsonville on
next week. That. Okay, Red just doesn't let up on you.

Speaker 4 (13:17):
It's tough, man. I mean this team this week with
West Idawa. Man, they're they're pretty talented.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
They have very deceptive record, very deceptive they've been in
most of their games.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
You you you can't go off that record. I mean
they lost to an undefeated Grand Ledge team by like
two or three points. They lost to was it was
it I think Zealand by a hail Mary or something
like that. Yes, I mean these guys easily could be
four and one, three and two, So you know, we're
not taking it lightly. We're excited about this game and
this matchup and uh and and trying to go one

(13:46):
to know.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Going into the year, what what what did you think
was your biggest strength as a team and how is
that played out so far through five games.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
I really thought just our our the connection that we've
built over the offseason. I thought was one of our
biggest strengths. We were together a lot, whether that was
weight training and conditioning or you know, just our off
season development program where we just would be together after
school talking about things as a group to get closer.
I thought that was something that was huge for us,

(14:15):
and building our guys confidence just not in football, but
with each other.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
That's where you fall on your senior leaders a lot.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
I would think, yeah, yeah, absolutely, it was great. It
was great for them. They did a great job of
coming in every day leading a group, and we just
got to know each other, even our young guys, and
so you know, that's that's something that's been awesome for
us and something that I've always done in all my programs.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Ken with your great experience over from the East Side,
winning state championships over there. Coach, you bring that right
here to the West Side. And I think I asked
you before about the biggest difference between East side of
the state football and West side so far.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
For you, I love I love the atmosphere of the
West Side games. I mean our our game and Mungers Stadium.
Our game last week ken Wood was was was just
like lives it was. It was unbelievable. So the they
show up definitely love that, uh And I mean I
think that that's one of the biggest things. Definitely like that.

(15:14):
The environment is crazy. They love football over here.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Coach again, I mentioned the leadership, Well, what do you
look for when you name your captains? What are the
kind of things that you want to see from young
maybe before you say he's going to be able to
our captain.

Speaker 4 (15:26):
So it's interesting. I really don't have like a captain
per se that's just like one guy. I have a
leadership council, and then I also have guys every week
I see stand out in practice and those are the
guys that kind of lead the group. But I never
I didn't pick captains this year. I think guys are

(15:48):
going to follow who they're going to follow. And I
think that at the end of the day, with our
leadership council and some of the things that we do,
you know, that's that's more of where we, you know,
get our leadership from as a connected group.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Tell us more about what do the leadership count with?
What things do they do?

Speaker 4 (16:04):
Yeah, we just we we we talk about the culture
of the team. You know, what what is our vibe?

Speaker 2 (16:08):
You know?

Speaker 4 (16:09):
Uh, what are some issues with some things that you
know we need change.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
If we have discipline issues, we talk about it with them.
I just believe in having an inclusive group. I believe
in having a group that you know, it's about community,
is not just about dictatorship and stuff like that. And
so I think when you do that, you have buy
in by everybody.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
What's one area you really need to get better at
right now, coach, we got to start. We gotta start fast.
We first quarter.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
We haven't scored in two games, and so we gotta
we gotta get fast, like we gotta execute earlier. We
can't wait and then settle in and want to score.
We gotta get to it now. So whatever we gotta
do to get the juice flowing. I thought today was
a great practice and a great way to start the
week off, and so hopefully that helps us into Friday.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Tyrone Spencer, our guest coach from East With High School.
We got some players here we're gonna get in the
second half of the program. The coach will take a
break and come back and talk more. Kent Win Falcons
stay with us here on the Pigskin Party from fox
Ford on twenty eighth Streets Southeast. Pig Skin Party from

(17:17):
fox Ford continues here on ninety six won the game
visiting with the East Kentwin Falcons. Here is there enjoying
a fine season. Coach Tyron Spencer, his second year coach.
What changes do you think maybe should be made to
high school football across the state of Michigan, if anything?
Or do you? Are you pretty good with the where
it is right now?

Speaker 4 (17:37):
I think there should be a couple of changes. Everybody's
not a big proponent of this, but I mean I
think one some form of like spring ball I think
would be great for football in our area. And the
reason why I say that is because basketball has Fall
League and it's like, okay, so how does football? You know, Like,

(17:59):
how come we can't have a seven on seven? Is
not enough because the lineman don't benefit from it. Right,
just give us fifteen days, fifteen days to practice. It
doesn't even have to be all equipment. It could be
just helmets or shells. But I just think that would
help us get football, move football along further in the country.

(18:20):
You know, we've been behind a little bit. Teams are
already starting earlier than us and everything, and I think
spring ball would help. And it won't take away from track.
I'm a big track guy. It won't take away from
all these other schools down south do it and have
spring ball and still have track and still have baseball.
So I don't think it will take away from any

(18:40):
of that. I think it'll just add to it.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Coach, we had a coach on a couple of weeks ago.
He said he was a proponent of every team getting
in to the playoffs at the end of the yere
He just Week nine will become the first round of
the playoffs and then everybody plays. Why do you feel
about that?

Speaker 4 (18:53):
I think that's fine too. I don't have an issue
with it. I mean, I think I don't have an
issue with it, But I do see where the lawmakers
would say, hey, let's let's have it where you know
you have to qualify some some way, because I mean,
if we're talking about life, you know you have to
earn it. You have to earn it in some way.
So yeah, see that's the thing. And if we go

(19:16):
back to like what basketball is able to do, it's
kind of the same way. Let's just make it a
week nine is first week of playoffs, and let's go.
And I like the regional seatings. I don't like the
district's seatings. I think the seatings need to go more
regional because I just do. I just don't think it
should be, you know, the best team in your area.
I think it should be ranked one through four from

(19:37):
a regional perspective.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
Coach, what's the most satisfying element of coaching for you?

Speaker 4 (19:43):
Just seeing that the guys come together and believe in
something bigger than themselves. I think that's awesome. Like just
getting guys from from different areas and backgrounds and ethnic
groups and religions and just getting them to believe in
one common goal and seeing them be able to achieve.
This is Uh, it gets no beautiful than that.

Speaker 2 (20:03):
You and the family all settled in now, can we
call you West Michigan yeah, yeah, we're here.

Speaker 4 (20:08):
We're here, yes, sir.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
Yeah, it's a great place to live. Yeah, you got
young Creed here. Yeah, I mentioned his name. Radio.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
Creed is enjoying it. He uh got a field trip
next week going to the cider mill and everything, so
he's excited about that in kindergarten. So uh now we're
having fun and we enjoy it here.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
What's the personality this team? Because you you know, you
were veteran yours. You know, each team can have its
own personality. Some are real business like, some are real
goofy and you can turn it on and want to
get on the field. What's just like?

Speaker 4 (20:37):
I think we got a mix a mix up everything
we got. We got some goofy eyes, We have some
some serious guys. I think. I think these guys are
just always up for the challenge. Though. Every every challenge
I give them, they they try to answer it and
make the call. So which is a good thing. So
I love the personalities. I love what they bring to

(20:58):
the table. But we got a really good mix of
just of of guys that think they're cool, think they're funny.
You know, we got we got it all.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
So I hope you brought one of your goroopballs tonight.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
Yeah, we got one of them here.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Okay, all right, don't tell me I got to figure
it out.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
You'll figure it out. You'll figure it out.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
All right, coach. In addition to coaching, tell us about
your duties at East count On.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
Yeah, right now, I'm the coordinator of academic Success student
services positions. So just trying to help students when they
get off track, get them back engaged and so, uh,
you know, taking pride in that and that that's something
that's fun. And uh. I also do after school program
uh there too, uh during the wintertime. So that's that's

(21:44):
something that I like as well because that that helped
our team as well with that after school program.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
As a guy who grew up and covered teams long
before you were into coaching, coach in this area, East
Kentwood was called East Camwood for a reason because at
that time, when they said we're gonna call this school
East Kentwood because I played in high school against just Kentwood,
You're gonna call it East Kentwood because they thought at
some point there would be a West Kentwood, just like
there's a Four Sails Eastern, four Sils Central and such

(22:13):
and northern. Uh do you see a day when there
will be a West Kent Wood and an East Kent Winch.
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (22:18):
I mean that'd be that'll be interesting though, uh you know,
and hopefully we'll still be here for it.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Yeah, I hope. So yeah, yeah, that's good. Lord Willing right, Yeah,
all right, coach, you know what do you say? We
talked some of your your players are there. They're wolfing
down some pizza and we'll we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll put it.
We'll grab them away from there and we'll get that
coche to Ty Spencer. Thanks for joining us again. We've
got a T shirt for you, so appreciate stoping by.
We'll come back with Morris players from the Fox Motors
Pigskin Party here on ninety six won the game. We

(22:51):
continue with the Fox Motors Picking Party coming to you
live from fox Ford on twenty eighth Street. You can
get it from twenty ninth Street by the way. They're
aout coming the back way. You want to check this out,
and they don't forget. They're a fantastic commercial department. Any
of your businesses that need any kind of vehicles, we
need a couple whether you need dozens, they can take
care of you. Here at fox Ford on twenty eighth
Street southeast, just east of the belt line, we're visiting

(23:13):
with the East Kent with Falcons. Austin Bobo is a
senior insidebacker at the East Kent with Falcons and he
also runs track. He's a sprinter on the track team.
Talked about the little Austin about the difference between track
and football because they're drastically different as far as how
you approach it as an athlete.

Speaker 5 (23:33):
I just recently started doing track about two years ago
because I hope I wanted to get faster for football
being an undersized player. So what's really different about track
and football is track is more about a me sport.
It's about you getting better and not really the team. Like, well,
I look at track each week and trying to get
a little better with speed, and I'm trying to just
focus on how can I improve for football. I feel

(23:55):
like you got to focus on also how you're going
to improve, but the whole team.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Well, you talked about some of the things you did
as a group in the summer getting ready for the season.
What did you do individually, what were you focused on
as far as getting better, you mentioned the track helped you,
but what about in the summer. What did you focus.

Speaker 6 (24:10):
On on the summer?

Speaker 5 (24:11):
I focused on being a leader and being a competent
player because I knew our inside backer group is very new.
We act none of us have started on varsity, but
I played the most out of all of them, so
I knew what had to be a leader this year
and I would have to be on my stuff because
they all looked up towards me.

Speaker 2 (24:26):
Coach mentioned that you guys take a lot of pride
in the stadium that you play in there. Tell us
about what that means to you to on a home game.

Speaker 5 (24:34):
This stadium meets everything to me because I've been playing
at the stadium since I've been ten years old. I've
played rocket football for Kim with my whole life, and
I've always been a Focon. So I take a lot
of pride in the stadium because look at my second home.

Speaker 2 (24:49):
English is your favorite class at East. Can't tell us
why you like English so much.

Speaker 5 (24:53):
I like English because my mom actually was a teacher
for fifteen years and now she's the principal, so she's
always drilled that into me, and I've been reading. Since
I've been like five, She's always had a book on
my hand, made me read a lot, So I've always
taken a liking to English.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
You have received some offers to play football, correct, Yes, sir,
tell us about what schools have offered you.

Speaker 5 (25:13):
So my first offer was in the summer at a camp.
It was Adrian and I was just building a relationship
with the Adrian staff and my defensive coordinator is very
close with their defensive coordinators, so we put in a
word from me. I showed out a camp and they
offered me. My second offer from Heidelberg was about a
week ago. Me and Charlie went on a visit and
another one of our teammates and we ended up receiving

(25:33):
an offer because the coaches liked what they saw from
us and think very highly of us.

Speaker 6 (25:38):
So we end up receiving the offer.

Speaker 2 (25:39):
Well, you have not made a decision on where are
you going to go to school yet? But what's going
to make that decision for you? Do you think Boston?
What's gonna be the factors that may say that's the
school for me.

Speaker 5 (25:49):
I want to go somewhere that's very good at football.
I actually started off high school. Our freshman team went
one day, and then our JV team went lost every game,
and then now senior year, we're weighing everything. So I
want to go to another school that has success for
football and also success in the classroom and has a
very high educational program because that's also very important to me.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
Austin Bobar, our guest from the East Kentwin Falcons. Austin,
we ask every tea, every student that appears on the
show to think back throughout his entire educational process from
high school, middle school, even elementary school, and your all
time favorite teacher, and who would that be for you?

Speaker 5 (26:26):
My favorite teacher. Her name is Ms Parker. She was
my English teacher last year, and we had instantly a
very good connection because she kept school very real, and
she also was a very safe place for us to
van about life, football and everything, and she made sure
we knew that she cared about us outside of school.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
You had a cousin that was very important in your life.
Tell us about your cousin.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
So my older cousin, Donovan, my dad is not really
in my life, so he kind of stepped up in
that role and he's helped me a lot become the
man I am in football in her life, and he
kids me like every weekend and we hang out and
he taught me a lot of things about how to
be a man.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
Night before the game. You you're a q Doba guy?
Tell us about what's on that plate from q Doba
on the night before the game.

Speaker 5 (27:09):
So I actually worked there too.

Speaker 2 (27:11):
I worked there just for the free food like that.

Speaker 5 (27:15):
Uh So I like to get a treat cheese crusty
quesada with steak, extra caso, rice and beans, and then
it's kind of playing and then I like to get
a cheese crust on the outside and then I like
to dip it into sour cream and salsa verde.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
All right, good for you. What about after the game,
you guys go out together or do you do do
it on your own? What do you do after the game?

Speaker 5 (27:36):
So after the game, actually meet Charlie and a group
of other guys, my friend Nas and joh Zil. We
all go to this place called the seventy sixth Street
Diner after every game.

Speaker 2 (27:43):
Know where that is? That's got good food, very good food. Yeah,
what do you get there? You get your it or
do you get saying thing?

Speaker 5 (27:51):
Usually I'm kind of a basic guy, So I either
get a burger feeling adventures like get like wings.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
We mentioned school. You hadn't chosen yet where you going
to go, but you want to take sport management or
polysci right, yes, Well what do you think right now
against a long ways off? What do you see doing
with your degree when you're finally done with your college days.

Speaker 5 (28:09):
I see myself being like a head coach. I probably
will have to start at the high school level, but
then I want to transition to being a Division one
coach at like a powerhouse school. I work my way
up the ladder.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
You want to start out coaching and teaching in this
area or do you want to want to go anywhere
outside the I'm.

Speaker 5 (28:25):
Willing to go anywhere, but it would be really nice
to go back to kent Wood and give back to Kentwood.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
What's your biggest strength Austin as a player in What's
to one area you know you have to get better at?

Speaker 5 (28:34):
Still, I feel like my biggest strength to that leticism.
I'm very athletic, and like every time I went my camp,
I was like either number one or two most athletic linebackers.
But I feel like an area I have to get
better at the overthinking. Sometimes I feel like I can
overthink a little bit too much.

Speaker 2 (28:49):
Very well, well, well said, well said, All right, I'm
going to have you pass the mic over before you
do to Charlie, I want you to tell me something
you've already mentioned Charlie a couple of times. Tell me
something about him as a person, not as a player.
I'll get into that, But tell me about something Charlie
has makes them a good guy.

Speaker 5 (29:02):
Oh what makes Charlie a good guy is?

Speaker 7 (29:04):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (29:04):
Charlie always checked them, his guys, and if anyone needs
right on the team, Charlie's the first one they asked,
because you would take everybody, have his car field with
like five people and take them all everywhere.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
All right, Well, thanks for joining us, Austin. Great job tonight.
We look forward to We got a nice T shirt
for you, so, uh check that out. And uh, and
let's pass the mic over to Charlie. Thank you for
having me. Charlie Nichols a senior center on this team
right now? And uh, Charlie, Austin mentioned how like in
earlier ninth grade and tenth grade, you guys didn't have
a lot of success on the field. How did you

(29:35):
how did you keep going and how did you keep
help keep the team together at that point.

Speaker 6 (29:39):
Yeah, so I was on that freshman squad with them. Uh,
and then halfway through the season I'm getting moved up
to JV for a game that moved into varsity. So
like having like the rest of my guys that are
still in the freshman level and then the JV level
come to me and like talk to me about it.
I was just telling these guys keep pushing through all
of it. This isn't that because I knew like better
days we're head and like now we're in those better days,
like we're winning, we're winning the game as we're going

(30:00):
to want to know each week and just a constant grind,
like the work is showing off.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
Charlie, one of the senior leaders on this team, what
what do you kinds of things do you need to
show the younger class? But especially if I don't know
how many sophomores you got, how many sophomores you got
up there?

Speaker 6 (30:12):
No, we got quite a few, I don't know the
exact number.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Well, what what what kinds of things do you have
to show them?

Speaker 6 (30:16):
As a senior leader, I would definitely just say mental reps,
just the visual things like if you're not in there,
if you can get in, you can go steal reps,
drink Scout team or even if you're like you can't
even get on Scout team. I say, just just watching
the technique for the guy that's above you, but like
not just watching hi, but also cheering him on being
his number one supporter because knowing if he goes down,
you gotta go take a spot. You. You know, you
gotta be able to.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Perform algebra, your favorite class. Why do you like that?

Speaker 6 (30:36):
So I'm just like a big number guy. I'm million
a million of numbers, like.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
Math, your favorite TV show, The Flash. Yeah, you're a
superhero guy. I am.

Speaker 6 (30:44):
Well, but I go back and forth about between DC
and Marvel.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Your night before the game food is spaghetti? Tell us
what you're play to Spaghetti looks like the night before?
All right?

Speaker 6 (30:52):
So I get like, I'm a spaghetti in the bowl
kind of guy. I can't put it on, Okay, I
do spaghetti. I'm a meatball guy though. Yeah, and then
I gotta have a bunch of garlic bread, you know
what I'm saying. The carves and then this I'll be
doing a little pitch of sugar on the other spaghetti.
I don't know what sugar. I'm telling you. It changes
the favor. I'm telling you it changed.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Coaches at the goof all you were telling me about forgetting.

Speaker 6 (31:13):
I'm telling you you got to try it.

Speaker 2 (31:16):
I guess I can't mock it until at least I've
tried it, right, all right. Coach mentioned that you guys
went down to Heidelberg, and uh, I mean you didn't
mention it, but Austin mentioned that, Uh, what was your
what we were thoughts about that when you visited a
college campus? What what kind of things are you looking
for when you went down there?

Speaker 6 (31:31):
Yes, so they just showed a lot of love. Like
even before I went down they had created connection with me,
reaching out first to me, uh, then like asking for
my film, and then really just it was Coach Munger,
one of the assistant offensive line coaches. He just kept
like every single week checking up on me and checking
up on me. And then when we went down to
the to take the visit, I really like the campus
and just the way I like how it was a
smaller campus and everything was like within walking distance and

(31:52):
they showed you every part of it. And they were
so like transparent too. They let you get in a
loane time with the players to ask anything you needed,
and like I said, they were just really transparent, Like
I really liked how they was, just like there's there's
just complete honesty about the program.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Right now, you're thinking about majoring in sports medicine in college.
What do you see yourself doing with that degree?

Speaker 6 (32:10):
I want to I want to do sports medicine or
like kinesiology. I want to end up being a physical
therapist one day, and I want to be pairing up
with a school because I know sports aren't gonna last
forever for me, but I want to like in any
way like help athletes, like give back to athletes and any
way I can and stay connected to the game.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
All right, I want you to think back through all
your days of education and think, who are Charlie Nichols
all time favorite teacher? Who was who? And why?

Speaker 6 (32:31):
I'd say miss Thurner. I've had her for three classes now.
I had her sophomore year for geometry, and I have
her twice this year of her back to back hours
and intro to intro to statistics, and I have her
for student Council and she's just like like Bobo said
with Miss Parker, She's just always somewhere. She's just like
always something you can go to. It doesn't have to
be school, lated, doesn't do sports lated, and she'll she'll
give you the answer straight up what you need to hear.
You know what I'm saying, And she's she's just there

(32:53):
for you.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
How do you evaluate this team team wise?

Speaker 1 (32:57):
What?

Speaker 2 (32:57):
What do you think the biggest strength of this team is?
And and one aready that they have to get better at.

Speaker 6 (33:02):
I would say a big strength that we have. I
feel like our positional groups are really well connected. I
feel like our offensive line we do like a we
do a Lineman dinner every single week and it's just
a team bonding moment for all of us. So I
feel like that's definitely one of our strengths, but one
of our weaknesses. I feel like we need to not
just have that connection be within the positional groups. I
think it needs to be a full team thing. You
need to be comfortable with all your teammates, not just
the guys that you're you play next to.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Tell me about that lineman dinner. Do you go to
someone tell us or do you want to a restaurant,
tell us how what happens there.

Speaker 6 (33:27):
So every week someone hosts, so it's always at somebody's
house and their their parents will end up just cooking
food or the cater food cook food for a week.
Yeah no, and it ends up being a lot of food.
But it always turns out pretty good. And we'll have
about twenty twenty five guys there because we'll get the
O line, D line. Sometimes you know, the running backs
will sneak in there. We let our quarterbacks come in there.
Got to make sure they're fed good. And it's just
a great way to get around everybody. We'll watch some football,

(33:49):
we'll play some games. We usually if they have like
a basketball hoop, will go play basketball out front. It's
just a really good way to just just a team
bonding moment.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
We were talking to coach about your season and you guys
had a terrific start, winning the first three games and
getting a lot of recognition. Then you're only lost against
a very strong Rockford program. How did the guys handle it?
How did you get them to because sometimes you hear
coaches say that don't let a team beat it twice,
I meaning you lose a big game and then you're
you're not focused the next week and it can cost

(34:18):
another one. But you guys obviously didn't because you bounced
back big last week where the forty two sticks win
over Caledonia. How did you keep everybody up for that?

Speaker 4 (34:25):
Oh?

Speaker 6 (34:25):
Yeah, So the day after the game, coaching texted us
in like our leadership group chat, and he just asked
like for like complete honesty and how he felt. And
I think just speaking out how he felt about the
game and everyone giving their own opinions, it really like
made it so everyone can see everyone's side. And then Kate,
our quarterback, ended up organizing a player led meeting, so
we say after practice the Wednesday of after that loss,

(34:46):
and we stayed after about thirty minutes and everyone just
spoke their minds fo their truth and how they felt.
And I feel like it really just like it made
us see the game from like different aspects because it's
easy to plaint fingers and be like, oh, they messed up,
they messed up, But like when you really like you
to sit down and talk to everybody about what had
happened in the game, You guys, it's not one person's fault.
It's a full team. Uh, it's a full team's fault.
We got a bounce back from that, and we obviously
did with the big homecoming win, and so I keep

(35:07):
going on to know each week.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Well, stated Charlie, all right, We've got I got it.
I got one double X here for you, buddy, perfect.
You need that, all right, guy, You guys did a
great job. You know what. I think. There's plenty of
pleats is still left, so you guys can go have
some more. We're gonna get a couple of your teammates
on air as we'll continue on with the Fox Motors
Pigskin Party. Come be live from fox Ford on twenty
eighth Street, just east of the belt Line. We hope

(35:30):
you're enjoying the big Skin party from fox Ford on
twenty eighth Street southeast. We're having fun and joining the
East Cound Falcons. Don't forget our games of the week
this week on ninety six one the game Hudsonville at Rockford,
a big Okay red showdown. And now one oh seven
m us Myskegan Motorsource is always a great battle out
on the lake shore on one o seven and our
reporters going out doing reports throughout the evening on these

(35:52):
following games Lowe at Kenawa Hills, Holland Christian at East
Grand Rapids, Jennison at Granville, oak Ridge at Whitehall Unity,
Christian Zealand West and Forest Hills, Northern at Reez Buffer.
So you want to make this a big part of
your Friday nights. Right here on ninety six won the game.
Throughout the year, we're visiting with the East Camp with Falcons.
Donovan Jones is a junior safety and running back on

(36:14):
this team, and he's a three sporter at East Camp
when he plays basketball, baseball as well as football. Donovan,
you never get a break. You don't get any time off.
Would you wish sometimes you had a week or two
to catch up or do you like going right from
one sport to the next.

Speaker 7 (36:26):
Nah, I like going one sport to the next year. Know,
I like staying busy. You know, sports is just my love.
So I just like doing a lot of things and
just trying a lot of new things.

Speaker 2 (36:36):
So, yeah, you're a junior on this team. You came
up as a sophomore. Tell us what was the when
you first go back to when you first played your
first varsity game as a sophomore, what was the big
jump for you. What was the difference.

Speaker 7 (36:47):
So on freshman freshman year, I played on the freshman team,
so I went from the freshman team to starting on varsity,
so you never played jv ball na, So it was
for sure a jump, but you know, it prepared me
for a lot of things, you know, a mental battle
also and just adjusting to certain things, and also the
level of tempo going from freshmen to varsity. So it

(37:08):
was for sure jump, But throughout the process it was
for sure fun, you know, being an underclassmist starting on
that team, A great team, great great people. It was
just great overall.

Speaker 2 (37:18):
So yeah, teen Titans go your favorite TV show? You
hear that, guys, Teen Titans is his favorite tea Teen
Titans favorite TV show? All right, but English? You do
like English class, right, yeah? Tell us why do you
enjoy that?

Speaker 7 (37:33):
I just like usually we do like assignments of writing
assignments and like we have to read and then write,
and I like doing stuff like that and it's like
it makes my mind.

Speaker 6 (37:41):
Work, So I like stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
So, yeah, your trainers are a big part of your
of your life. Tell us about the trainers, who they
are and why they are special to you.

Speaker 7 (37:51):
Yes, I have a lot of trainers that like have
a big impact on me and like influence me on
a lot of things off seasons. Really when I get
into a lot of train and stuff like that. And
Coach Carey, Coach Tchuma, Coach Noble, I've been with them
for a long time, like even before my freshman year.
So it's just getting working with them and just learning
more about them, not only as a trainer, but as

(38:13):
people as general, and just building that relationship with them.
It just makes training even more funner and things like that.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
So, yeah, what would you tell someone a young player,
let's say a freshman or an eighth grader even that
hasn't used a trainer before and it's not sure if
that's for them, what would you tell them the benefits
of having a trainer? It is great.

Speaker 7 (38:32):
It makes you way more confident in your game. And
it's just like when you know you put in the
work of training, you know you put in the work
of doing the things that you're going to put into
play in the game. It just makes you more confident
and lets you play more free. So, yeah, you're.

Speaker 2 (38:47):
Just a junior. We've already gotten a couple of college offers, right, Yeah, sir,
what's that like.

Speaker 7 (38:52):
It's for sure great, you know, a lot of attention
around you, but it also creates pressure, and you know,
I'm starting to like pressure.

Speaker 4 (38:58):
You know.

Speaker 7 (38:58):
It's a great thing to have and it's a blessing
to have. So just just having those offers and having
the attention is a good thing and it just helps
a lot with a lot of things.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
So yeah, again, you've got plenty of time to make
that decision. You know, you got a whole nother you
got this year, you got a next year or too,
to take as long as you want. But when you
do come down to making that decision, Donovan, what will
be the factors that you think will outweigh all the
others as far as when you do choose a school,
because you're going to have some options.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 7 (39:29):
I would say I've been a big person on culture.
You know, when I go down to a school, I
want to see a lot of culture. I want to
see like how the fans react. I want to see
how the players treat the fans. I want to see
how the coaches even treat the fans. So I feel
like a big thing to me is the culture and
how how do I see myself fitting in to that school.

Speaker 4 (39:47):
How do I see myself.

Speaker 7 (39:49):
Playing there and seeing the fans get hyped and things
like that, So I would say, really the culture.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
So yeah, and think back through all your education. You're
an all time favorite teacher? Who and why?

Speaker 7 (40:00):
Oh yeah? I just met her recently last year and
I was just saying, miss Dyster. You know, I had
her in foods one and she taught me a lot
of things on how to bake and things like that,
and it was for sure fun. And she's just a
great teacher.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
No, she knows how.

Speaker 7 (40:13):
To teach but also have fun with the teaching. So
I just loved teachers like that, and she was for
sure my favorite by far.

Speaker 2 (40:21):
So can you cook?

Speaker 7 (40:23):
Yeah, what can you cook? I'm pretty good cook. I
could cook cookies. I could cook muffins, all right. I
even cook you some some great spaghetti. So you know, yeah, great, great, great, great.

Speaker 2 (40:36):
We're gonna get it for Charlie over there if you
put sugar on. Though I didn't know about that.

Speaker 4 (40:40):
I don't know about that one.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
But.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
At all with that one as well. All right, your
night before the day game dinnery boneless wings or chicken
and rice? Do you do you get them at home
or do you do you go out to eating? What
do you do?

Speaker 7 (40:54):
If I could prefer them, I would get them at Applebee's.
You know, I love their uh Win boneless wings, half
have barbecue, have garlict promisan, so I just love that.
Or I love my mom's homemade chicken and rice, So
either one works.

Speaker 2 (41:07):
But yeah, Donovan, you mentioned you were up at adversity
or your entire sophomore year. Was there one or two
seniors on that team that helped show you, you know,
kind of show you the way bring you under your wings?

Speaker 1 (41:17):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (41:18):
Definitely.

Speaker 7 (41:19):
I would say one person that a lot of people
wouldn't expect me to say is Drew Carlin. You know,
he helped me a lot in like ways that a
lot of people don't know about.

Speaker 8 (41:28):
You know.

Speaker 7 (41:29):
He he pushed me in a lot of ways. He
kept my head up in some ways, and you know
I did that to him also in certain aspects. But
you know, he was a big part of what I
did my sophomore year and just a lot of the
things that I'm doing and my attitude and my behavior
going forward and things like that. So I feel like
he for sure is a big part of what is
going on right now and for me and also another senior,

(41:52):
I would say, Silas Mitchell, he's just a dog and
you know that. Just seeing that every single day and practice,
you know that put me to want to become that
and I pushed me to want to do more of
what he did every single day. So that those two
are just great people and hopefully they're doing good in
life right now.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
So nice job, Donovan, best of luck to you this
year and then down the road as well. Yes, just
passed mic over to Quashan over here. Quayshawn Julian, senior
outside linebacker, also plays inside as well. He runs, He
plays basketball, also runs track to you don't get a
break either. Do you wish you had time off and
on the maybe to just take a week to chill
or do you like going right to the next one?

Speaker 5 (42:29):
I like going right into it because, like Donovan said,
it keeps me busy. It just keeps me out of
trouble with things like that.

Speaker 2 (42:35):
How do you assess this team's place over Obviously the
record is impressive four and one with only one loss,
But how do you evaluate this team's place so far?

Speaker 5 (42:43):
I feel like it's a lot of things we can
still clean up. Overall, like I feel whatever we go
over film, not everything is like sunshine rainbows like that.
So I just feel like being consistent is our biggest thing.

Speaker 2 (42:54):
You really like personal finance class? Personal finance? What caught
your eye about that? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (43:00):
Man?

Speaker 5 (43:00):
So like just overall, just like trying to learn more
about like investing and what to do with my money
when I you know what I'm saying, break off into
a job field and things of that nature.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
I think that should be required class in all high schools.
It's not a lot of them have a lot. Some
of them do not as well. You like to go
to Popeyes the night before the game? Yes, what do
you get it? Tell me what you get at Popeyes?

Speaker 5 (43:19):
You like either a chicken sandwich or some grill some
grilled chicken tenders something like that or eliminate.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
Quashan your your siblings a big part of your life.
Tell us who your siblings are and how they've influenced you.

Speaker 5 (43:32):
Uh yeah, So there is Jace, Serenity, k Tim and
then another Serenity.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (43:39):
I feel like I got to be the standard for them.
So every day are where are you.

Speaker 2 (43:43):
In the in the pecking order? Old. You're the oldest, Okay,
they're all younger.

Speaker 5 (43:47):
Okay, Yeah, So I just feel like I got to
be the standard for them and just like you know,
working hard every day, just trying to you know, put
off for them.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
Quashan, tell us about your all time favorite teacher and why?

Speaker 5 (43:56):
Uh yeah, So I look, you met my teacher last
year as well. Her name was Courtney Stickey. She was
my math teacher, and overall she like understood that I
kind of learned different from other classmates. So and she
helped me a lot through the out throughout my year.

Speaker 2 (44:09):
You mentioned you're like personal finance. You kind of like
take that in college. Would you like to see yourself
a financial advisor? What do you want to do with that? Done?

Speaker 5 (44:15):
So, yeah, the financial advisor, just anything to do with finance,
because you know, dealing with numbers and stuff like that
would be nice.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Where do you have to get better as a football player,
Quay Shawn?

Speaker 5 (44:25):
I would say probably just being able to be more
consistent with my hands, Just being a better hands guy,
things like that, and you know, knowing the call, being
more consistent and making plays.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
