Speaker 1 (00:00):
And welcome to the Pigskin Party, our opening show the
twenty twenty five high school season. We are ready to
rock and we are at Fox Chrysler Dodge g Bram.
Hello everyone, I'm Rick Burkey alongside for our first of
nine shows across the Fox Motors homes. We're going to
go to a different dealership each week, nine shows and
ten weeks. We take Labor Day off a couple weeks
(00:20):
from tonight, but we're excited to get going. When we were
talking high school football, we've got a great opening show
lined up for you. The Northview Wildcats are here. We'll
talk with coaching some of his players about their season.
They had a fantastic year last year. One of the
great stories in high school football, not only across West
Michigan but across the state were the Northview Wildcats. And
then of course they're turning their pages right now they're
(00:42):
looking forward to this year's season. We'll talk about that
as well. We'll also talk about high school officiating. Brad
Brunette is our special guests. He's a supervisor of officials
in the Oka Conference. We're going to be listening with
talking with Brad about that. Learning a little bit more
about that, and so we also preview a little bit
(01:03):
of what's coming up for us in our coverage this year,
which starts a week from Thursday. Believe it or not,
we're ahead of the game. We're gonna have two pigskin
party shows in before the first game of the week.
The game night is a week from Thursday, on the
twenty eighth of August. So looking forward to that, and
we'll tease you a little bit about with that. Let
you know what the game we've got coming up for
(01:24):
that one. But we are again at Fox Chrysler Dodge
Jeep Ram on Plainfield John Phillips as the general manager,
gongtime friend of the show and a supporter of what
we do here with our high school coverage. John, I
know it hard to believe. The high school football is
almost knocking on the door.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Hard to believe. And it's been a lot of fun
to do this kind of the first show of the
year each year with you, and every year I think
we say the same thing, we can't believe it's here already.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
And we've got some great new lease specials on Grand
Cherokee and the Big Horn. Tell us about them.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
We've got a couple of great deals going and the
nice part is we've got a great selection to go
along with it. But a twenty twenty five Jeep Grand
Cherokee for three seventy nine a month, it's been a
long time since we've been a payments that low. And
also a twenty five ram Bighorn a vehicle list for
over sixty one thousand dollars. We've got a lease out
(02:18):
there for four ninety nine a month.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
On that one, I had a chance to look at
some of your commercial vehicle inventory. You've got a lot
out there available with some great deals.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
We've got a huge selection and kind of the fun
part about the whole football season kicking off the fall,
we get excited about because it becomes our commercial time
of the year, so a bunch of people coming on out.
We've got a good chunk of our inventory is twenty
percent off the list price. Definitely a great time to
take a look at those.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Now. All our Fox locations offer service, but you have
a special twist to that. You have service in three
different areas. Tell us about the breakdown and how you
can take care of people and their service needs no
matter what they are.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Well, we've got our consumer service area right here at
the GEEP showroom. So all your Jeeps, Chryslers, Dodges and
then Ram fifteen hundreds right here.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
We've got all the service needs.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
We can take care of those right here for that
plus an express service area. You don't need an appointment.
You can drive in anytime from seven thirty to six
Monday through Friday, eight to two on Saturday for oil changes.
But then up the road. Because we have that big
selection of commercial vehicles, we have a commercial service department
help service those vehicles. And then in the back part
of that building we also have a full service body
(03:29):
shop as well, which a lot of car dealers are
going away from body shops. We're here to help everybody
that way.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
General Manager John Phillips, Fox, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram Here
on playfifth, we have to mention there's a little bit
going on on Plainfield right now. John, You guys everybody
on playfield's had to deal with tell us a little
bit about what's going to be worth it. You got
to put up with a little bit of moving around
we even here in and out, but it's gonna be
worth it when it's all said and done.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
It'll definitely be worth it.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
It'll help with a little bit of the congestion issues
in regards to so many left turns on playing field.
It's a busy avenue, but it is one here that
we're going through. What most people in Michigan go through
this time of year is some opportunities to make the
avenue a little bit safer.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Hey, you know, we've got some breaking news here pretty
much from Fox Motors right now, as Fox has just
closed on a new business that we're going to be
talking more about in the future. Tell us what it is.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
John, we'll be another spot for you to then end
up hitting during these football Mondays. But Fox did just
acquire in Greenville. They have the GMC Chevy store up there,
so Fox Greenville Chevy GMC. So they've got kind of
the north covered of that area of Grand Rapids and
now the south down there with Caledonia that they've had
for a long time, and then Alpine has it as well,
(04:42):
so we pretty much have Grand Rapids surrounded all right.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Tell us about your staff, John, and why they all
get into the Fox difference.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Well, without a doubt, the crew that we have here
are always doing what they can to create remarkable experiences
for our customers each and every day. The crew, especially
here in the new Jeep showroom. This this group's been
around together a long period of time, very very educated
and knowledgeable on all of the different items that we have,
and they truly enjoy making a difference.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
All right. John Phillips, general manager at Fox christ Or
Dodgy Braham just Kitty corner across the street from Meyer
on Playfield again. A little bit of congestion right now,
but it's worth it. All the great deals he told
you about, the service deals, the options you've got here
at their different locations. John, thanks for stopping by and
thanks for hosting the Wildcats and serving them. They're eating
that pizza fast right now. Sounds good.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Glad to have you guys out.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
John Phillips said. We are truly excited here at nine
to six to one the game to be partnering with
Kids Food Basket and Lake Michigan Credit Union again this
season for the Touchdowns for Kids promotion this year. For
every touchdown scored again in our nine to six to
one and one oh seven m US Lake Shore Games
of the Week, our friends at LMCU donate fifty dollars
to Kids food basket to nourish local kids to reach
their full potential. We don't take a break, we're going
(05:52):
to come back. We're we talk to some high school
officiating and it's something you want to make maybe make
some notes on, because there's always a big need for officials.
Officials want to get started it and if you ever
wondered what have been liked to be in how you
get involved in officiating, you're gonna find that out. So
grab a pen and a paper. We'll take a break,
come back with that here on the Fox Motors Pig
Skin Party. We roll on the Fox Motors Pig Skin
(06:29):
Party again. The game's starting next week, believe it or not,
a week from Thursday. We've got games lined up for you,
and we've got game reporters going to different games doing pregame,
halftime and postgame reports. So you cover coast to coast,
load of the lake shore, as we say, and we've
got two games of the week as well as the
game reporters, a lot of action coming up. Right now,
(06:49):
we're gonna switch gears, talk a little high school officiating.
Brad Drewnette is the veteran supervisor of Officials for the
Okay Conference. Brad, great to have you here once again.
Tell us what can and do officials doing the offseason
to get ready for the year.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Yeah, Rick, I appreciate you having me on again this year.
We're looking forward to another great season. Hard to believe
we're ready to get started, but scrimmages kick off Wednesday
and Thursday this week and then right in the games
starting next week, so we're ready to roll.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
We do. We keep.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
It's almost a year round thing nowadays, with fitness and
cardio going on NonStop because each year our officials we
get a year older and the kids are the same
age each year, so we need to keep up with
them and get our bodies ready, eating healthy, training and
be ready to do the best job for the teams
and coaches and players each week. To officiate these games
(07:43):
to the best of our abilities and rule knowledge is huge,
and so is mechanics, so we're always doing something almost
year round nowadays.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
One of your biggest assignments is the scheduling of the
officials for the Okay Conference. What are the biggest challenges
when when you schedule so many games, so many different officials.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Yeah, the biggest thing is, you know, putting the right
officials on the right matchups, you know, making sure everyone's
ready to roll there, ready to go. And rule knowledge
is huge there, you know. So that comes into play
with our off season conditioning and with the quizzes that
we do each week and tests and everything like that
to prepare so that we are ready to officiate, especially
(08:25):
if new rules come into play, and this year fortunately
there's not too many new rules. The biggest one is
just the fumble rule. Okay, so it's in line with
the NCAA rules as well. When there's a forward fumble,
from now on, it's going to come back to that
spot of the fumble, regardless of regardless of what down
the forward fumble is going to come back to the
(08:46):
spot where the ball is fumbled when it's between the
goal lines. Okay, That way a team is not gaining
advantage by what they call, you know, fumbling on purpose.
Speaker 5 (08:57):
So so the.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Space if the end zone, and it's recovered as it
comes back out.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
Then it would come back out depending on which team.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
If the defense got it, it's their ball.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
Yes, then it would be a touchback.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
But yeah, the offense gets it goes back to where
where there.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
Was fumbled there, So you can't gain those yards when
not in possession of the ball, so to speak.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
I know a lot of the veteran teams of officials.
They were the same guys, work together week by week.
I wondered about how challenged it is for you when
a let's say, one guy on one team comes down
sick or something or has to pull out the night
before the game. How difficult is to find one person
to fill in that one spot.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
So we got a whole list of crews that we have.
We probably got thirty thirty two crews in the Okay
Conference that work games for the Okay teams. And when
someone goes down with an injury or illness or whatever,
we have a list of what we call swing officials,
officials that are not on cruise yet or looking to
get on cruise, and you know, they might be newer, younger,
(09:54):
or whatever it may be. And then that's where they
get those opportunities to start filling in with these crew
us and taking advantage of those spots when they can.
And then what my assistant TJ. Rusto and I do
is once those officials that our swing officials are getting
the experience that they need, we try to start forming
new crews because we're always looking for new officials, new crews,
(10:18):
you know, to keep it younger and to keep up
with the game because we all keep getting older. But
the good news is we have probably close to thirty
new officials this year in the West Michigan Officials Association.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
That's quite a jump.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Yes, Yes, we have a good crew there, a good
staff that are helping recruiting new officials. A guy named
make Mike van Lan who's also one of our officials
as well too. He's doing a good job as our
recruiting coordinator and mentor to get these newer and younger
officials started.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Brad, I know that you mentioned rules and a rule
change on that fumble, But what is a common misperception
of fans by high school rules one or two that
you know that the fans don't really understand the rule
and they're complaining in the stands when they don't grasp
the rule.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Yeah, I would say two of them. Two of them
stick out the most. A lot of them watch the
Lions now that they're good on Sundays and in the NFL,
when you have a defensive pass interference way down field,
they assume that the ball should be spot there as
a spot following in the NFL, where in high school
it is not the case. Is you know, march off
fifteen yards and we put in play from fifteen yards
(11:28):
from the previous spot. So a lot of people miss
miss that one as well too. Also to another big
one is holding, okay holding. They used to be when
it was behind the line or wherever they occurred, they
would market from that spot and it would be a
larger penalty than ten yards. But now in line with
the NCAA, you go back to the previous spot and
(11:50):
may ten yards back. So people still get confused. High
school rules in the state of Michigan are still their
own identity there and not to be confused with NFL
or NCAA rules.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
All right, Brad Brunette, the supervisor officials the Okay Conference,
our guests here tonight. We talked about you've got some
new officials coming in this year, a nice jump over
thirty this year, but there's still a need. What's the
biggest need varsity, JV, freshman, middle school or is it
spread across.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
All across the board, Because a lot of our officials
were still stretched. Then we do have quite a few,
and we're getting there, but at every level we could
always use people and usually start out working Rocket Football
seventy eight ers subvarsity which is freshman JV up to
the varsity level that way, So if anyone's interested out there,
you can go to our website which is WMA dot net.
(12:45):
That's our local association here, and also check out the
Michigan High School Athletic Association website as well too. You
need to get signed up on both of those websites
to become an official, and there's a comment section in
there that she'll get an email to me and our
group and then that way we can get it get
you started in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
That's wmo A West Michigan Officials Association dot net WMOA
dot net, and that'll get you involved. And what would
you tell somebody who's thinking about it, not sure if
they if they're if they're made to be an official
or not.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
How would you encourage that if you don't know, give
it a shot, Give it a shot, try it out.
Good way for kids that graduated high school or in
college right now to make some extra money as well too,
or if you're an empty nester at this point, in life,
and uh, you're looking to stay involved in sports where
you used to come to the games and watch your
kids playing stuff like that. Give it a shot and
(13:40):
see what you got and we'll train you up, and uh,
we'll see what happened from that point on.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Brad, always great visiting with you. Thanks for stopping by.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
It was it was a pleasure having as well. And
also too, I want to congratulate you Reck in case
a lot of people do not know that you have
been nominated into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame
this upcoming year. So congratulations to you. That's a big honor.
Thank you very much, and were looking to attend the
banquet this year.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Great, thank you. I just came from the Hall of
Fame golf outing all one thousand Oaks and we just
saw Joe Levoy from Fox Motors as well.
Speaker 5 (14:15):
So good good, Thank you very much, appreciate it. We'll
take a.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Break, come back with more. We're going to talk high
school football the North Few Wildcats stay with us here
on nine sixty six won the game. We roll on
with the fig Skin Party. We are live at Fox
(14:38):
Chrysler Dodge Gee Ram on Plainfield, Kitty Corner from Meyer
over here, stop on out again. It's great deals on
those jeep Grand Cherokee three seventy nine per month on
lease special. Also the Ram fifteen hundred Big Horn four
ninety nine per month. Great opportunities there and great selections
here at Fox Chrysler Dodge Gee Bram. We're talking high
school football, Northfield Wildcats On Tremmel, a veteran player as
(15:02):
a player in the area at West Ottawa High School.
Very outstanding high school career went on now he's gotten
into coaching now helped out at Central Michigan Football before
he became an now assistant coach with Northew's Wildcats. Let's
talk about your CMU days, Sean, tell us about what
you gained out of that coach with mclhinney, and tell
us about your CMU days.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
Yeah, it was great to be around a great staff
of coaches Ta Vita Thompson, Michael Zordich, Jim mcawain, to
name a few that I work closely with. And just
seeing those guys every day and how they operate in
practice and in games, it's something special to see and
try to bring to the high school level. With Ash
as well, I know he was on staff there and
came across some of similar coaches with coach Akey.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
So yeah, it was.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
Really good to be around them and see how good
football operates at a high level.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Sean, When did you get the coaching bug? When did
it start to start settling into you? Hey, I want
to I want to work with young man.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
Honestly, you know, maybe a couple of years after I
graduated high school. Osh was always on me about it,
you know, wherever he was at, he wanted me to
come coach, just never really had the time for it,
and then decided that I should make time for it
because it is something that I really want to do.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
So well, let's talk a little bit. I talked with
Ryan earlier this summer. Again, a magical year last year.
They were one of the stories in all of the
state of Michigan and definitely in West Michigan football with
that turnaround, best season and fifty years and that I
know that it was special. Tell us again how the
guys are dealing with that, And it's it's kind of
a fine line there, Sean, in terms of what you
(16:32):
accomplished and how you got to start all over from scratch.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
Now, Yeah, absolutely, and Os is a very much forward coach.
He's not really worried about what happened last year, more
so attacking this year with you know, a hard edge
and enthusiasm, and I think, you know, we should be
cognizant of our success. It was a great thing last
year going nine to zero, losing to a good team
in the playoffs there, But yeah, it's definitely about pushing
forward and what we got in store this year and
(16:57):
looking for another good years here.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
So yeah, again, they were outstanding. A perfect regular season,
first one in was it fifty.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Years, Yeah, yeah, something crazy like that.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Great, and then I made it to the playoffs for
the first time in a long time as well. But
again that's in the rear mirror right now. You're focused
on this year. What the guy's been doing. What are
you allowed to do right now? Are your full pads
full contact to now?
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Yeah, we're going. We're week two of training camp, full pads,
full go.
Speaker 6 (17:24):
We got some scrimmages this week with some teams coming in,
so it's going to be a really big week for
us as far as getting the depth chart together in
rotation set.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
We're really excited to get going.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
Is there an area right now let's just tell you
right now. As an assistant coach, coaches are always looking
at their positions linebackers, offensive line, and defensive line. DB's whatever,
is there one area do you think is the biggest
strength right now?
Speaker 5 (17:48):
In what area?
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Maybe there's the biggest question marks about.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Yeah, I think our strengths right now are in our
O line.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
You know, a couple of our guys are back here
doing a real good job returners, all kind diference guys,
receivers as well, Logan Tyson, Aaron Johnson, those guys out
returners again, coming back super athletic on the edges, and
I think where we're gonna have to pull it together
is D line. We're not very beefy as far as
having a bunch of big guys, but we're nasty and
we know how to go over there.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
So not really worried about it.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Sean. You your history teacher, doing a lot of subbing
in different districts as well. Why what is it about
history that appealed to you to become an educator?
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Yeah, it's just good.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
You know, there's a lot of life lessons in history,
and you really need to study it to not repeat it.
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Right in the negative ways.
Speaker 6 (18:34):
So I think it's a good good segue into even
football and life lessons is just learning history and what
you know past great figures have done.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
You mentioned coach Oshnock one of your influences in your career. Also,
coach Jason Martin was influential to you. Who was Coach Martin?
Tell us about him?
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah, he was. He helped out.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
He was the quarterbacks coach when I was at Westouto
and he would come in and call plays on game
day and he just was a great, brilliant football mind.
Still is coach with him at Northview. He helps out too,
and he just had knows a lot about the game
and has had a son who played at Michigan, so
he was around big time football all the time. And yeah,
he's just a great mind and a great brain to
have around a program for sure.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Unfortunately you didn't get to play in that incredible new
stadium at West Side there. But what do you think of.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
It you're telling us about it.
Speaker 6 (19:24):
Yeah, I went back and I'm really happy for them
over there and really happy for the kids to get
to play in that super nice obviously with the scoreboard
and the.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Sound system and all that. So I was just, you know.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Happy that we could contribute in our way and you know,
uh have we had our run and it was meant
to give them another stadium and and help out there.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
So I'm glad that I was able to be a
part of that.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
You can help you help build a foundation for that.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
Right, Yeah, I would hope, So I would hope.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
So well, all right, what are the team goals for
this year? Because again you're coming off a fantastic year,
What are the team goals for for that? For the
for the Wildcats this year is going into conference play
after a couple of non conference games.
Speaker 6 (20:02):
Yeah, just to get just to simply improve upon what
we did last year. And that's this very simple thing, Brick,
is just to improve and get better.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
With the program.
Speaker 6 (20:14):
And sure we did something that hasn't been done in
fifty years, but that doesn't mean we can't do something
again that hasn't been done in fifty years this year.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
So you got a great challenge, Sean, right off the bat,
West Catholic, a perennial state powerhouse, and Bolly, I tell
you what. Neither coach can be accused of backing off
on that first game.
Speaker 6 (20:31):
Yeah, no, no, definitely not. Ash likes to go get
it and that's what we're going to do. Super excited
about that one. Going to West Catholic Crosstown should be
a big game with a lot of people there. West
Catholic known for great football, so we're super excited to
challenge ourselves.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Visit with Northie assistant coach Sean Trammel, Sean, what are
your thoughts as far as here coaches talk about a
philosophy of how what they want to do offensively as
opposed to a scheme, as opposed to gearing it to
theal that they have right balancing this is what we
want to do as opposed to these are the players
(21:05):
we got. Maybe you need to go in a different direction.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
Absolutely, yeah, And I think the balance there rick comes
from establishing a mentality with your players. If you have
a hard edge and go about what you do in
a certain way, then things are gonna go right.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
You know.
Speaker 6 (21:19):
Scheme is scheme, and we will always try to put
players in the right places. But at the end of
the day, these players are putting on pads and they're
trying to beat the man across the man across from them,
and that's that's all we can really coach them to do.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
How many sophomores do you have up on the varsity.
Speaker 6 (21:31):
It's tough right now, we got some tweeeners that are
gonna play JV and varsity. I would say around four
or five that are gonna be up getting pretty significant time.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
The fifth quarter rule is a good one, right, Yeah,
it's a great one. It is great for high school
coaches and high school football in general as well. Well.
Shan Tremmell, Well, we appreciate you stopping by. Did the
guys save you some pizza? I hope they did not either,
I hope.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
So you know, these guys are hungry. They've been working
a lot harder than me.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
So thanks for stopping by, and good luck to the
Wildcats this year. We're gonna get to your players just
a second.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Thank you Rick, Thank you for.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Assistant coach Jaun Tramult. We'll take a break and call back.
We'll talk with some of the Northview Wildcat players here
on the Fox Motorspickskin Party live from Fox Chrysler Dodge
Jeep Ram here on Plainfield, Northeast and the Fox Motorspickskin
(22:27):
Party continues from Fox Chrysler Dodge j Ram on Plainfield.
Stop out here, take advantage of these great opportunities here
for service. They've got a huge commercial vehicle inventory right now,
stop out check it out here. Uh, just kitty corner
from Meyer on Plainfield. Carson Ginn is a senior defensive
and offen fantisve alignment for the Northfield Wildcats. Our first
player guest of the evening, Carson, let me ask you this.
(22:50):
I know you like playing on both lines, but if
coach has come to Eve and say this week on
the game, you can only play on one side of
the line, which one you're gonna choose?
Speaker 7 (22:58):
And why, I'd probably be the deeve side of the
ball because it's really just what I'm fundamentally better at
and that I think I excel at better.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Plus you'd rather be the hammer than the nail, right, Yeah?
Speaker 5 (23:10):
Absolutely?
Speaker 1 (23:11):
You also powerlifting and track and field. You're in track
and field? What events do you do in track?
Speaker 7 (23:16):
I throw a shot?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
I just guessed that off the top of my head.
I don't know. But anyway, powerlifting, now, is that competition
or is that just a personal training?
Speaker 7 (23:24):
It's a club sport through my school, so yeah, it's
like a competition.
Speaker 1 (23:28):
Tell us how that works. How did the powerlifting competition goes?
Speaker 7 (23:32):
Usually you just do squat, benching, deadlift and you just
do as much as you can and get scored on it.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
All right, let's talk a little bit again that that year.
Last year was magical. Tell us what it meant to
be a part of the rebirth of Northview High School
and not only at the school but in the entire
northern community here.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
Yeah, it was great. We've come a long way since
my freshman year. We were I think we only had
about three wins. So it was just like a constant
development between the team and I.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
Economics is your favorite class at Northey? Why do you
like that so much?
Speaker 7 (24:06):
I'm going to probably go to school to study the
business field, So economics really just helps me get in
that type of mindset of how to make money.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
Things like that I can visualize. I see in your notes,
your pregame meal the night before the game. Tell us
about what's on that plate.
Speaker 7 (24:22):
It's gonna be a big play to spaghetti and meatballs.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Giant massive plate I'm seeing. Yeah. We give every player
that appears on this show the chance to think back
of their entire educational career, back all the Way High School,
middle school, elementary school, and think of their all time
favorite teacher, Carson Gin who is your all time favorite
teacher and why?
Speaker 7 (24:42):
It was my eighth grade history teacher, mister Showman. And
he was just like a really fun guy to be around.
He always made class fun, always interested in football and
things like that.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
Coach Stokes was an important influencer. Like who's coach Stokes?
Speaker 7 (24:58):
And to tell us about he is the defensive line
coach here at Northview and he's been mentoring me since
my freshman year and he's just a great guy.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Carson. You don't know where you're going to go to school.
You tell us about some of the schools you're thinking about.
Speaker 7 (25:13):
There are some schools that are interested in me too,
off the top of my head that I'm really interested
in our Saginaw Valley in Fair State, along with Davenport too.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
You'd like to take business. You thought about maybe what
you want to do with that business degree after your
football days are done.
Speaker 7 (25:29):
Probably along the real estate side of things, that's one
of them, and then business entrepreneurship is up there as well.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
You're one of the leaders on this team as a seniors,
what do you have to show the juniors and the
sophomores that are on the varsity. What do you have
to do in terms of leadership? What do you have
to show them?
Speaker 7 (25:45):
I just really help them focus on the physicality part
of the sport. Make sure that you always keep your
heading on a swivel and are always willing to play
with the pads.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
All right, that's fantastic. So you're powerless? Is that over
the winter?
Speaker 7 (26:01):
Yeah, that's a winter competition sport.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
Do you go against other schools?
Speaker 7 (26:05):
Yeah? Usually it's meets against other schools.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Yeah, how many? How many schools? Like you're at one event.
Speaker 7 (26:11):
And uh, it just really varies. It can be like
it can be good, crazy amount of numbers.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
All right, Well, Carson, we thank you for stopping. We
got a nice pink skin party T shirt for you.
Before you pass the mic over to Jack, I want
you to tell us something about Jack as a person,
not as a player. Tell us a little bit about Jack.
Why he's a good guy, because I'm sure he is.
Speaker 7 (26:31):
I mean he's a great guy. Uh, super motivating to
his teammates and all that, and overall just a really
fun guy to be around.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Well, thank you. Carson passed the Mic over to Jack
van Prey, and he's also a senior tight end and
outside linebacker as well, plays basketball and track. You go
right from one to the other. I wish you had
a couple of weeks off, Jack, just to kind of
catch your breath.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
Yeah, it'd be nice.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
That's not an option, though, is it, Especially when you
make a nice football run like last year as well?
Oh yeah, you know, I talked about a little bit
about that magical season, but I know the coaches we
talked with, Coach Sean and Coach Ashen have told me
before that that they've got to get through you guys
heads that that was great, but that's all in the past.
How's that coming across to the guys realizing that last
(27:13):
year is in the past.
Speaker 8 (27:15):
I mean, kind of just taking it day by day,
Like you see what happens when you put in the work,
and we have something to look forward to doing that again.
So kind of just taking it day by day, game
better each day to get back to where we were.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
You mentioned one of your favorite parts of a home
game at Northview is the band. Tell us about how
the band stimulates you.
Speaker 8 (27:34):
I mean, it just it just gets me fired up,
you know, just the band playing that loud music before
the game.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
You know I have I've not had one before, but
I've had multiple people from the Northview area say, tell
me about this Wildcat burger at the concession stand. It's
it's supposedly unlike any other burger you've ever had.
Speaker 8 (27:55):
Can you vouch for that, Jack, That's the best burger
you'll ever eat?
Speaker 1 (27:58):
Yeah? And I get. I guess they serve like hundreds
of them on a game, right that they have like
eighteen grills out there cooking them and you can smell
them from a mile away. That I have got to
I have got to, uh get that tried. Tell us
about your pre night meal before a big game.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
I mean, just some good old chicken alfredo hell out
of it? Oh yeah, probably two plates.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
What do you do musically in your locker room? Is
everybody got in their own headset or you got multiple
you got a main music being piped in? Was your
guys are getting ready for dressing, ready for the game.
Speaker 8 (28:31):
I bring a big old speaker, but some guys use
they don't have phones, but a lot of us listening
to music on the same speaker.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
But I bet you play it loud enough that the
guys can't even can hear it even that got their
headphones on as right, Yeah, all right, your older brother
and sister were playing part of your life. Tell us
about them and how they influenced through Jack.
Speaker 8 (28:46):
I mean both my older siblings played college sports.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
I mean tell us how were they played.
Speaker 8 (28:52):
Uh my sister she played uh maybe two years at
GRCC and the and she transferred to Lincoln Memorial University
in Tennessee for volleyball. And then my brother played basketball
ATMSKIE and Community College. So just like seeing what they
(29:13):
were doing and they helped me a lot things like that.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Jack Van Preyan, a senior tight end and outside linebacker.
Our guests here enjoying the Northview Wildcats here on the
Pigskin Party opening show. Next week. By the way, we're
going to be down at Fox Chevrolet in Caledonia, and
the South Christian Sailors will be our guest. Coach Danny
Brown and the Sailors were joined us as well. Jack
van Preyen, you, like Carson, want to play football in college.
(29:41):
You've got a lot of interests. You've been tell us
about some of the offers you've received to play next
year collegiately.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
Uh yeah.
Speaker 8 (29:49):
I went to I think eleven camps this summer and
I picked up about like six or seven offers. I
got Western Illinois, Import Wayne State, uh, Adrian Hope, all
of it, Nazarene, and then I'm in talks with schools
(30:09):
like Saginaw Valley, Eastern Illinois, and then some other D
two and FCS schools.
Speaker 1 (30:15):
How do you keep it all straight? There's so many
different schools. Everyone's telling them this is the place for you,
and it's a great program, great family atmosphere. How do
you keep it straight and you know, and get a
feel for where you want to go?
Speaker 8 (30:27):
I mean just going on those visits, you really see
a lot there just talking to the players and then
obviously like the coaches, how much they talk to you
and how they treat you and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
All right, without naming which schools are gonna invent it,
because you don't know right now which school is gonna
come out on top. What is the one key area
if you could guess right now that the school's gonna offer,
that's going to make say that's why I'm gonna choose
that school because of this area. Right now, they stood
out above everybody else.
Speaker 8 (30:54):
I think, just feeling like a family, just like somewhere
I see myself being for a few years.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
You know, you want to take business and sports management
in h in college. Tell us about what you'd like
to do with that degree after your college days are done.
Speaker 8 (31:12):
My dad, he owns a masonry business. I've thought about
maybe taking over that or helping him out with that,
doing something like that.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Or you better give the name of the business or
he's gonna be.
Speaker 8 (31:23):
Upset, uh DVP masonry.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Okay, Yeah, now you can go back home and have dinner.
I actually don't need a dinner after you eat three
plates of pizza. Yeah, and Jack almost set a single
player record over here eating I think. But let's let's
thinking back all through your days and all time favorite
teacher for Jack fan where and.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
Why she's at the high school? Taman just cutud. She
lets me take naps and she's just a real nice lady.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
Giving me food and let's be taking naps. I tell
you what, you know, you get the Honesty Award you
have absolutely do Jack fantastic as well, Thank you, Saban.
She does a lot more than she teaches you more
than that.
Speaker 3 (32:06):
But he's a great teacher.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Absolutely as well, all right, we're well, let's let's talk
about as a player. Jack, give me one thing. I
don't care which side of the ball you're talking about.
One thing that you think you really do well and
one thing that you really need to get better at.
Speaker 8 (32:24):
One thing I do well, in my opinion is I
would say kick out blocking and like use my body
to get open. And the thing I think that I
need to get better at is just probably getting faster.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
Okay, what did you do in the summer to work
towards that speed increase?
Speaker 8 (32:46):
I mean we did. I mean we had workouts every
single day during the summer, and then I ran a
bunch of hills over the summer.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Where the hill where the hills located.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
Right down the street at East Oakview.
Speaker 1 (32:59):
Okay, I know that, I know that field. It is
a nice steep hills and we had an incredible summer
for heat. So I'm sure that made it real challenging
for you. All right, Uh, I want you to finish
this sentence for me, Jack, the twenty twenty five Northview
Wildcats season will be a success if.
Speaker 8 (33:22):
If if we stay together and yeah, we just play
as a team and we don't live up.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
Oh, coach Sean has written in his head great answer, hunh,
that's fantastic, great answer, Jack, appreciate that. Carson Gin and
Jack van pryin our special cast year on the Fox
Motors Pigskin Party. We'll take a break. We got another
player still to talk to you from others. Don't you
go anywhere, stay with us on nine to six, won
the game good night away here at the Fox Motors
(33:58):
Pigskin Party here on Plainfield, just across from Iron don't
forget stop out here and check if these great deals again.
Service hours Monday through Friday nine to six, Saturday eight
to two. And they've got the three different locations for
their service. That's very unusual. Thirty eight to forty four
playing field, Consumer service, forty one hundred Commercial service, and
(34:18):
the body shop also at forty one hundred just up
the road from where we are right now on Plainfield,
we're talking high school football with the Northview Wildcats. Our
third and final player guest is KeAndre Johnson. He joined
us also assistant coach Sean trammels Back on headset as
well with us. Sean, Let's ask you first a little
bit about KeAndre. Tell us what kind of player. He
(34:40):
means to your program right now.
Speaker 6 (34:42):
KeAndre is a huge player for our program right now,
helping us out on that D line. He's one of
the returners, knocks down incredible amount of passes and practice. Honestly,
I've never seen anything like it from a dude who's
like five ten five to eleven. So he's gonna be
very vital to us this year.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
Caandre, you're also a wrestler. Tell us how that's helped
you as a football player. What you learned as a wrestler.
Speaker 9 (35:04):
It teaches me how to stay disciplined during sports. And
not only that, like improves my my aggression towards getting
towards that football, making tackles, making big plays.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
And that's about it.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
If you're an All conference player, last year you played
defensive end, and Devensteck, I'm gonna ask you the same
thing I ask your teammate. Coach comes to you and says,
you're can only play on one side of the line,
which one you're gonna choose?
Speaker 9 (35:26):
And why I feel like defensive end because it gives
me more space to work and move and just try
to bring more pressure to the QB.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
And I'm gonna give you a little mind game here, KeAndre,
where there's a scout up in the stands watching the
Northview Wildcats play, and he's watching a player in particular,
and that player is watching as you. And that's based
on what you've done so far this year in your
high school career. What's that scout gonna say, I know
(35:58):
this young man does this, and I know he's got
to get better at this. What what are those two
things that's gonna say.
Speaker 9 (36:04):
He's gonna say that that I have an amazing get off,
amazing strength to my game. You know, I do gotta
get better on like bending around the offensive lineman, but
like overall, got amazing power to my game.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Who's his favorite musical group? Who is this Juice World
with Juice World?
Speaker 5 (36:23):
What is that?
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Educate me in the generation?
Speaker 3 (36:26):
Juice wrld?
Speaker 9 (36:26):
Juice World was he he died a couple of years back,
But Juice World, Who's an amazing artist? You know he
he always kept me hyped up before the games? And
you know that's just the person I always listened to
before the games.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
Your favorite TV show was A Flash? How long has
that been a favorite.
Speaker 9 (36:41):
Since I was little? Actually, you know, I'm like a
big like comic book NERD. So like, you know, when
I get to watch like those superhero movies or shows,
that's just.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
Like the thing that's just like keeps me up and
keeps me going.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Well, you certainly as a superhero fan, you certainly had
Hollywood options to watch through the years. It seems like
every time I look up, there's a new superhero movie
coming out from Hollywood somewhere. As well. Your brother, your brother,
Andre was a big part of your life. Tell us
about him.
Speaker 9 (37:10):
Well, yeah, because Andre, you know, he played on the
offensive side of the ball, so you know, he always
liked he always try to give me competition and always
try to make me better at the end of the day.
So right now he's going to Calvin and he just
tries to make not only me but his teammate better.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Let's go back over here to Sean coach Sean Trumpell
assistant coach here, Sean KeAndre on the defensive line. How
much should do you work with the defensive line? And
where does that stand right now? Part of the team
coming along where you'd like him to be.
Speaker 6 (37:40):
Right now, I'm actually on the offensive side of the ball,
but I do get to see quite a bit of
the line, especially during inside run pods periods like that
where they're doing run fits. And I think we are
getting just as good as we should be so far.
I think we've got some great players that make up
for their lack of size with a high motor and
(38:01):
high physicality. As Candre was saying, yes, I think we're
aggressing very nicely, and these scrimmages this week will be
a great indicator.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
That all right back to KeAndre, Candri, you have not
where you want to go to school next year. Tell
us about some of the schools you're thinking about going to.
Speaker 9 (38:17):
Well, I'm thinking about rather going to Adrian or but
also I might just go to Davenport just because I
like their like social work programs, and I always try
to like help people no matter what. That's why the
reason I want to choose rather social work or criminal justice.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Where did that come from? That interest for you and
the social work criminal dust? Where did that bug start
for you?
Speaker 9 (38:40):
It started for me when I was little, because I
always want to like help people out. Like my mom said,
when I was little, I used to just hold the
door open for all the people just to walk in,
so I just get satisfaction of just helping people overall.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
And KeAndre Johnson's all time favorite teacher was who and
why Miss Porter?
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Because I was freshman year, it was my first year
at Norview, and like she just gave me a welcoming
to Norview and just opened her open her arms to me,
just gave me a nice welcoming.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Let's take you back to that time when you came
to Northew for the first time as a freshman. That's
kind of tough time to come in. You know a
lot of your you don't know a lot of people there.
What was that like? And and uh and and how
did you get through that?
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Well?
Speaker 9 (39:22):
At first, it was kind of like I was kind
of nervous because I didn't want to give the wrong
impression at first. But then you know, my brother, he
was already a year and coming to Norview, so like
I just hung out with most of his friends and
then I also came on I wrong my own friends
and it just helped me overall.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
You also like Alfredo pasta for the night before the game.
What's your what's your go to as far as getting
ready for a game? Do you have your own or
do you just go along with whatever's on the big
speaker that.
Speaker 9 (39:52):
I listened to my own like depending on is like
if it's a game that I really need to be calm,
I listen to some R and B, but like them
mostly I'll listen to like hype music.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
As they say.
Speaker 1 (40:04):
Back to coach Sean Treummeel here assistant coaching that, uh,
these guys seem pretty level headed talking to these guys.
And again there's each team has its own personality. Some
guys are super serious, some guys are real wacky but
can turn it on game time. Where does this team
fit in?
Speaker 5 (40:20):
So far?
Speaker 6 (40:21):
I think we're a mix of a hard edge mentality
and just guys that say on even keel because you know,
we do coach them very, very hard, so that breeds
them holding themselves to a high standard, and then when
it comes to game time and other settings, it's easier
for them to keep it even keel because.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
We are going so hard on them in practice.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Sean, where do you want to go with your coaching
career down the road? Ultimately?
Speaker 6 (40:44):
You know it's tough to say right now. Hopefully you know,
just be able to get my own team eventually in
the area or maybe even coaching college. Some of my
old contacts and you know, just be great. I just
really want to go where I'm needed and help the kids. Honestly,
that's what it's about.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
So you stay in contact with coach Mack.
Speaker 6 (41:00):
No, not since he's retired, to bother him too much
and let him get the enjoy his retirement. But definitely
still have some contacts at Central Michigan Football that I'm
in contact with all the time.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
So all right, KeAndre Johnson again, where is the strength
of this North teams group? Right now? Do you think
what's the biggest strength of the Wildcats?
Speaker 9 (41:21):
I think it's our defense overall, because we all stay
together as a team, We're all dedicated to pursuit to
the football world. We'll just trying to make big time plays,
as we say. So that's our big game, our defense.
Speaker 1 (41:33):
All right, Well, you guys have all been great. We
enjoyed visiting with the North few Wildcats tonight. Players Carson again,
Jack Van Proyan, and KeAndre Johnson. Also assistant coach Sean
Travill did a great job stepping in for coach Bryan Oshnock,
who had a family commitment last Mink I had to
pull out. Shawn, you did a great job, but great
having you on.
Speaker 3 (41:52):
Appreciate it, right, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (41:54):
Have you back here in a heart.
Speaker 6 (41:55):
Good to reminisce my player days came on here the
same show, so.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
All right, yeah that's right. Heat Sean was on this
show as a player, so I grab that as well.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
I love sending me to stuff.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
We'll take a break, come back and wrap up the
Pigskin Party and tell you about next week's show. It's
a big one. Stay with us here. On nine to six,
won the game final segment of the Fox Motives Pigskin
Party from Fox Chrysler Dodge geef Ram here on Plainfield.
Thanks so much. They're always great hosts here for us.
(42:29):
We always enjoy coming here. John Phillips, the general manager,
rolls off the red carpet and the guys uh not
only were good guests, but they got great food here
in Pizza Wings. Boy, I tell you a great spread
out there, and they ate to their hearts content and
there's still some left. I might even get a piece
of pizza. Who knows as well. One week from night,
we're gonna head from the north end of town to
the South end, all the way down to beautiful downtown
(42:52):
Caledonia as we'll be at Fox Chevrolet. Looking forward to
visiting with the South Christian Sailors coach Danny Brown in
the there's always a strong factor in this area in
high school football. Looking forward to visiting to the Sailors
one week from tonight, as we'll have our second show
of the week before we even get any game action.
(43:12):
And speaking of game action, one week from Thursday night,
that is August twenty eighth, it all tips off on
nine to six to one, the game and one of
the seven mus And if you're new to our area,
you want to make this partly regular visiting our radio
visiting habits, because if you're going out to a game
anywhere across West Michigan, you want to tune in to
(43:32):
the J and H Family Stores pregame show that starts
at six pm on game nights. Usually it's on Fridays,
but in week one, August twenty eighth, most almost all
the games are on Thursday night that week, and we're
going to have on the pregame show. On your way
to the game, you will hear a preview of different
games across West Michigan, not only our games of the week,
(43:53):
on both stations. But also I send out a group
of game reporters to different games across West Michigan, and
they do detailed previews of those games, so you want
to catch that no matter what game you're going to,
maybe they'll preview the game you're going to. I don't know,
but I can tell you this right now. Already, we
already know. These are some of the games we're going
to be previewing one week from Thursday night on our
(44:15):
pregame show. Lowell at East Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo Central at Jennison,
Grand Blank at Mona Shores, Northew at West Catholic, Muskegan
at Granville, a team from Windsor, Canada at Caledonia, Kenawa
Hills at Forest Hills Northern. And we're also going to
(44:36):
have a preview of Friday night's game. Again, these are
all Thursday games, but there's a big rivalry game on
Friday between South Christian and Grand Avens Christian. We'll have
a special preview of that annual rivalry game on Thursday night.
That's all part of that in the J and H
Family Stores pregame show. Then we both the stations split
off for our games of the week. Our ninety six
to one the game Game of the Week opening game
(44:57):
Byron Centered Hudsonville, Bretmakeet and Buck Gino on the call.
That starts about six fifty pm. At six thirty pm,
our good friends at one oh seven m us we'll
have their game of the week and it's a big
one to start PUAMA West failure at North Muskegan. Jason
Hutton and Tom Kendra on the call with that one.
So that's going to be a great, great game to
get started on the Lake Shore as well. So then
(45:20):
at halftime of our game of the Week on nine
six to one of the game, we have update reports
from those games I mentioned across West Michigan. Then at
the end of the Game of the Week for both
we have the Meyer High School Scoreboard show after the
host JEPS and Physical Therapy halftime show I mentioned where
we get updates, but then they all come back later
and do detailed postgame reports. We have scores, we have stats,
(45:42):
we have interviews with winning coaches and more that all
comes up on the Comer Scoreboard show following on both stations.
