Perennial powers find themselves in unfamiliar territory, adding increased importance
to an always big game. It's Rockford and Miskegan from
historic Hackley Stadium, and it's the OLMCU Lake Short Game
of the Week on one oh seven m US. I'm
Jason in alongside Time Kender for this week two meeting
between two of the best high school football programs in
the state of Michigan. This is the Brown, Heating and

Cooling pregame show, live from Big Red Country, where things
have gone not so smoothly for the home team, six
losses in the last nine games since winning the twenty
twenty three state championship. For Miskegan time, just how badly
did the Big Reds need to win tonight?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well, Jason, I guess it depends on who you talk to.
If you talk to the twenty twenty three Muskegan football team,
it's not a big deal at all. They started the
season zero to two, then won twelve straight games won
the Division two state championship.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
But if you talked to.

Last year's team, Muskegan is desperate for a win, and
the desperate Muskegan team is a dangerous Miskegan team. They
missed the playoffs last year for the first time in
Shane Fairfield's fifteen years here at Muskegan, and they vowed
it would never happen again. But I tell you what,
they lose this game tonight, and you know they have
that Cincinnati Mohler trip in week nine and then really

I think toss up games coming up against Byronner and
Mona Shore. So if you look at it from that standpoint,
this is pretty much a must win game for the
Big Reds.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Rockford had been a regular season dynamo since Brent Cummings
replaced Ralph Munger as head coach. That wasn't until they
dropped consecutive games last year in weeks four and five
to Todtsonvilla Jennison, then lost the playoff opening to Grandville,
and then fell at home last week to Seline Tom
What has happened to the Mighty Rams.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Well, you look at this Rockford team.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
You know, ninety three players out there compared to forty
one for Muskegan, So they look a lot like the
same old Rockford, right. But they're solid, but I'd say
not spectacular. They had their well coach, well organized, deep disciplined,
but what's missing, you know, the dynamic playmakers. They really
don't have the game breakers and as a result, that

makes them an easier team to defend. So I think
in this game tonight, you know, rock for would love
to have a low scoring game here.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I think if it ends up being a higher.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Scoring game like Muskegan had last week against Grandville, that
really plays into the Muskegan's hands.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Yeah, you talked about last week. Muskegan fell at Grandville
forty four to forty in a game where they had
four hundred and seventy yards of total offense and each
team scored six touchdowns. The difference ended up being extra points,
which can always be a factor when you play a
wing T team that often goes for two. And for Rockford,
they followed home to Selene thirty seven to twenty eight,
in a game they led twenty eight to twenty one

in the fourth quarter and then really the key play
of that game was not only a fourth down touchdown
play by Selene, but then a snap over the punters
head that resulted in a safety and the Rams fell

think River Rouge is going to be a team to
be reckoned with in Division three Reese Puffer is at Caledonia.
That game actually moved to thorn Apple Kellogg, we are

their renovations. But one we're really looking at. How about
Andrew Beidenvender and grand Haven on the road up at
Thoroughby Field to take on Traverse City West. The Bucks

looking for their first two and oh start in quite
some time.

Yeah, they're very excited. Jason down and grand Haven.

They got a huge opening win over Stevensville Lake Shore,
but this will be a real test for him going
up there. They'll be without their star junior running back
Andrew Williamson. He's got a knee injury. We don't know
how severe that is. But when you look at grand
Haven's schedule all at the end of the year, Grandville,
Hudson Villy's kent with the last three games, they could

get on a little bit of a roll, get some momentum,
could be a breakthrough year for them.

Well, of course grand Haven will be at home next
week's take on this Rockford Rams team. Okay, red opener,
as we get at Sea Rock for take on Muskegan tonight.
How about spring Lake Cody Mallers a bunch looking for
a two start. We'll take on the Flying G's of Gladwin,
certainly a really good program, but a team that did
lose last week in Gladwin Spring Lake beating Fruitport. On
the other hand, up at Big Rapids to take on

Cole Haston, a really good Cardinals team. West Dottawa at
Zealand West is the defending state champ. Ducks looks to
start the Jeff Fullhouse Era two to zero in our
Lake Shore Spotlight game tonight, which features our own Scott
the camp. He'll have updates throughout the night and then
a full report later tonight on the Meyer Scoreboard Report,
and we'll hope to check in with Scott at halftime.

He's at oak Ridge Russell A. Erickson Stadium as the
Eagles take on Montague in a big West Michigan Conference
Lakes Division battle tonight.

Always a great game, Jay, and this game looks like
another toss up to me. You go back twelve years.
Each team has won six games six and six over
the last twelve years. Last year's game up at Montague
a little bit of a surprise.

Game fourteen to seven. The Eagles at home looking for
a little bit of revenge. The other storyline in that
game is two first year coaches, Phil Copes at Montau
coming from Hamilton and Tim Parker. He's been Akridge forever,
but it's his first year as head coach.

So that's another intriguing part of that game.

We stay in the Lakes Division, we see Orchard View
at Whitehall. Somebody's going to start. Oh and to both
time to avoid that bait. Fremont is at Manistee, Lunnington
at Mason County Central. That's a Lakes Rivers crossover game
in the River Shelby at North Miskegan. And then how
about Ravenna at Heart. We think that game is one
of those pick up type deals. Then will be an

important game as both teams trying to look towards making
a playoff run.

Oh, no question about it that when it comes to
a playoffs, this is a huge game for both teams.

I thought it was kind of cool.

Todd Harriman's the longtime NFL player for the Philadelphia Eagles
from Ravanna. He was back at his old high school
this week. I saw him speaking to the kids. Really
cool moment. And Todd not only spoke to the team,
but he also went and spoke to the Ravanna youth
football players as well, So kudos to Todd. His dad,
Paul Harriman still helps out up there. But you know,

I just feel like we got a little bit better
up front, maybe than Hart and that's why I pick
them this week.

It's gonna be interesting to follow for sure. Grant at Hysperia,
Centremont Coms at Nowego. Kent City is at Outa Heights.
How about that either the Eagles or Wolverines are going
to start two and oh white Cloud looking for its
first win of the season. They'll be a hope taken
on Harrison and then an eight player action. The Skegan
Heights is at Lawrence Still. Come on the Bowl and
Heating and Cooling pregame show, Tom Kendra goes one on

We are back here in the coach's corner with the
Miskegon High School coach Shane Fairfield, coming off a hard
fought back and forth forty four to forty loss at
Granville and the opener coach, what did you learn about
your team that first week?

Speaker 4 (07:49):
You know, answered a lot of questions, you know, and
every every coach wants to find out how physical their
teams are. You know, the execution and the schemes and
schematically and things like that. Will we'll come we understand,
you know, those things take a minute to kind of
get more film on people and get more technically and
fundamentally sound and kind of scheme people. But the one
thing that everyone wants to know week one is how

(08:10):
physical are we and are we going to be you know,
a smash mouth and an explosive team. And I think
that's the biggest questions for us was the fact that
we don't have to scratch our head and go, well,
well this kid hit where that kid hit, with this
kid put his foot in the ground and get north
and south and with our offensive line dump people. So
those questions were all those boxes were all checked. Now
it's just going to come down to fine tuning schematically

and scheme and under following through with our game plan
and our alignment assignment.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
So all right, I thought very big positive. He scored
forty points. Obviously, you're a new quarterback, Lamar Bradford was
very efficient one hundred and thirty seven rushing yards and
a score, six of eight passing and a touchdown pass.
Did Lamar kind of establish himself as your guy at quarterback? Yeah,
you know, and.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
He's a senior, and I think what helps him is
the fact that he's a senior. He was around last
year and he's are so you know, there's there's nothing
more that says more about an individual than as a wrestler,
because you know, you put yourself out there and you
expose yourself to pressure. Every time you step on that
MAT's likely. You know, if you're a lineman, you get
hit by six or seven other guys. If you're a

defensive lineman, you're hidden by four or five other guys.
When you're a wrestler, you know you're out there all
by yourself and it's the hardest six minutes and you
know of a fight that there is. And for him
to then now go out there and be the quarterback
and have all the eyes on him, I think that's
what helps him the most, is the fact that he's
used to being in the spotlight and he's just got

(09:36):
to do his job, and then you have think he
did a great job being a ball distributor. He took
a shot to the head and face and knocked his
helmet off him, and he's spitting blood. He put a
hole through his cheek and no foul, but I guess
they say no blood, no foul, but there was blood,
so we didn't get the foul. But unfortunately he was

(09:57):
after halftime. He was able to you know, put gauze
through it and uh, and he played and and that
that really I think impressed his team more than anything,
like you know, uh, the question for me for a
starting quarterback is always a guy who is willing to
put his foot in the ground, get his helmet knocked
off him, put it back on, go back to the
huddle and look his guys in the eyes and say

let's go. And and he did that, and I think that,
you know, Lou was right behind him. Lou is pressuring
him every day. I think Lou is ready to play
as well, but Lou Lou understands it's a you know,
a competition, and then then there's always one play away
from in this offense being you know, being the nice guy.
So I think those two have really supported each other
and and I think Lamar has really done a lot

to solidify that position in week one.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
So this week you go from Grandville to Rockford. Basically
out of the frying pan into the fire, as they say.
But Rockford coming off the loss to a big time
program in Saline. I guess what impresses you most about
this year's Rockford team.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
He just always the same. But soas Cookie Cutter, it's
a discipline attack defense. Their defense is all over the place.
They there's a method to his madness, I know. But
they're slanting and they're folding, and they're looping and they're
doing all that. They're will man, They'll put a ton
of guys in the box that will go man, you know.
So offensively is the little led by vander vander Bean,

(11:20):
who is the defensive coordinate, Jason vander On, the quarterback
who was a three time or two time on ord
winner at Ferris. So good guy, you know, great coach,
great player. Kids follow his lead really well. So they're
disciplined on offense. They do a lot with their past
games and in a little bit of their run game.
So yeah, you know, I would hope people say the

same thing about Muskegan that it's always just the same
thing that they're just they're just very consistent in what
they do, and they're really good at what they do.
And I think that's exactly what I look at when
I see rock for It's I could watch them without
any uniforms or logos on their helmets and tell you
that's Rockford. If that makes any sense.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
Sure, final quest, coach, Let's step back from the x's
and O, it's just for a minute, this is the
home opener at Hackley Stadium. What does that night mean?
I guess to you and to every kid on this roster,
they always they always look forward to playing.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
And these kids were playing, you know, they had a
Labor Bowl game here over the weekend and all the
youth were here playing. And those guys were youth back
in the day and and now it's their moment to
be here on a Friday night under the lights at
home against a team like Rockford, and and I think
it's just that's the what you what you live for,
that's what you what you what you're a part of
at your DNA and and uh, I'm excited to see

us play here. I'm excited for our fans to be
able to be here and and uh, you know, both
teams are fighting for their their lives right now, and
I think it should be a heck of a showdown.

to improve on, and we will get to those keys

to victory for each team in this game.

Well, I would say for Muskegan, anytime you play Rockford,
special teams is key because Rockford is so good at it.
Last week they had Sam Cummings with a block, punt,
scoop and score. Muskegan needs to take care of business
on special teams. Meanwhile, for Rockford, I think the key
for them is limiting big plays.

How do you do that? It starts with those.

Interioror guys on defense. If they do their job, then
they don't have to commit additional resources there. I think
if they limit the big plays, Rockford is a good
chance tonight, so.
